Mobile application features integrated video support
Fring has unveiled the first video over internet service for the iPhone and iPod Touch.
The service is embedded in to the Fring application, which enables free VoIP calls on the devices, and allows iPhone users to receive incoming video calls.
The co-founder and CEO of Fring Avi Shechter commented: “We were the first to bring mobile voice over internet (VoIP) to mobile devices, the first to bring iPhone and iPod touch users the choice to make free Internet calls, the first to enable cost-saving mobile twitter over internet, and now we’re proud to continue leading the field of rich mobile-internet communication by bringing users the world’s first fring video calls over internet for the iPhone and iPod touch.â€
Due to the unfortunate positioning of the camera on Apple’s devices, out going video calls are not possible, however users of the Nokia Symbian S60 can make full use of the service.

You can almost hear the theme song from "Cops" playing in the distance as you read this headline.
According to a report from the New York University student newspaper, there is widespread gadget and computer theft taking place on the hallowed educational grounds of NYU. The situation has gotten so bad, that New York's Finest have been called in to help crack down on "iCrimes."
From Cult of Mac:
Quote:
In an effort to stop campus gadget and computer thefts, New York police are bringing an ID program to the New York University students.

Back in the days of firmware 2.x and 1.x, we were able to play mame roms directly from our iPhone and iPod Touch. The app was called mame4iphone developed by ZodTTD. It emulates a huge range of arcade games from the 1970's - 2000. mame4iphone was based on MAME 0.37 Beta 5.
mame4iphone is back with vengeance, and is now available for iPhone/iPod Touch firmware 3.0. It is available for download for free on Cydia and also available for Rock users.
What else is new in this release you ask? Well for starters you should notice some performance improvements over the previous version, which is no surprise considering the plethora of changes to firmware 3.0 as well. The emulator has also been updated to MAME4All v2.4. There are specific user interface changes as well that allow for the entire romset to be loaded, as well as some bugs with screen orientation and scaling.

DigiTimes, the Taiwan-based site that reports on the East Asia mobile phone industry, has another report out today regarding Qualcomm chips in Apple phones. According to their sources, Qualcomm is talking to Apple about its new hybrid mobile chips. However, previous rumors that the phones would be released by summer of next year may not pan out, according to this report.
Qualcomm's new hybrid chip allows phones to use the networks of CDMA/EVDO carriers - such as Verizon and Sprint in the United States - and UMTS/HSPA+ carriers including AT&T and T-Mobile. In addition, the same chip supports LTE, which is a network technology that major carriers have announced plans to implement starting next year.

With Apple's enormous power and size, it isn't difficult to imagine the many ways in which the company is capable of exerting massive influence wherever it places its high beams. Naturally, such influence leaves Apple vulnerable to the occasional criticism of market manipulation.
Case in point. This week Apple is facing claims that it is "manipulating flash memory prices" through the duplicitous act of placing huge orders and then ultimately taking less than originally demanded. According to a report from 9to5Mac, Apple continues to affect prices with the tactics they are believed to habitually employ.

I fixed the touch keys on the recent AntSnes 0.71 release. I though that I could support multi-touch in my application. I mean that there’s nothing preventing it to happen It should just work.
Well, the thing is that there’s no multi-touch in S60 5.0! So there’s also no multi-touch on Samsung i8910. Therefore I’m not wondering anymore why Nokia uses only those crappy resistive displays.
According to Symbian roadmap the multi-touch is coming in Symbian^3. The Symbian^3 should come sometime at 2010. The chances of getting the multitouch to the AntSnes before that are close to 0.

Why take an iPhone, a slim device that already takes decent photographs and add several macro magnifying lenses? For [Mathijs], simply because he could, But now he can take some awesome macro pictures.
[Bhautik] (maker of the tilt-shift Plungercam) took the concept further. With some more trademark plumbing supplies and a lot of duct tape, secured an interchangeable SLR lense assembly to the back of his iPhone.

The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) has released a free iPhone app aimed at parents buying games for children this Christmas.
Intended to educate parents on the content of the games they're buying, the app contains rating summaries for over 18,000 games.
These rating summaries are currently provided by ESRB but not displayed on game boxes as ESRB ratings and content descriptors are. The organisation says the summaries elaborate on the content descriptors, enabling parents to make informed choices on the games their children play.
"Rating summaries provide just the kind of specific, descriptive information that parents find useful when having to make decisions about whether a game is suitable for their child," said ERSB president Patricia Vance.
"This new rating search app puts all this information at parents' fingertips when they need it most, right at the store. It's a powerful tool that will help assure parents that the games they give as gifts are not only fun but also appropriate for their children."
The free app is available now and contains information on titles rated since July 1 2008. ESRB has also planned a series of TV and radio adverts, which will inform parents about its ratings system and the new app.
ESRB game ratings were established in 1994. A Federal Trade Commission report released in 2007 found that nine in ten parents were aware of the ratings, 87 per cent were satisfied with them, and nearly three quarters use them regularly when choosing games for their children.

APC Magazine details how Optus, an Australian mobile phone operator, has for months been deliberately blocking access to Android paid apps.
"Optus is the exclusive Australian mobile carrier for the HTC Dream and Samsung Galaxy Android phones, and yet people who signed a long-term contract for these phones have to date been blocked from buying paid Android apps and getting the full Android experience. ... APC found many angry and frustrated comments on the Whirlpool community forums by Optus & Virgin Mobile customers."
The article speculates, reading between the lines of the opaque comments offered by both Optus and Google, that the carrier is "demanding a cut of the sales revenue from Android apps if it is to remove its restriction on accessing them."

iPhone developers know from last year that they can expect a big Boxing Day boost, as hundreds of thousands of people start browsing for content on their newly-gifted iPhone or iPod touch.
However, they can mark another big day in their calendars: Black Friday. It's traditional for US retailers to offer big discounts on products on Thanksgiving Friday, and last week was no exception.
Now analytics firm Mobclix is saying that the App Store also benefitted, with a 59% traffic boost on the day - and a 43% increase for Thanksgiving week as a whole, compared to the three other weeks in November.
Whether this is due to the way thousands of apps had their prices chopped for the day, or simply because people were sitting about at home with time on their hands, is unclear.
Even so, the sheer number of the former, allied to the upswing in traffic, means Black Friday is set to mean cheap apps in future years as well as cheap products.

Symbian's problem isn't that it lacks capabilities, it's with the user experience: namely the clunky, awkward, and occasionally terrible S60 interface. Enter Maemo, to save the day! And also, apparently, a newer, friendlier Symbian. Nokia wants to get better, please.
The latest of Nokia's reliably rousing Capital Markets Day reports points to two goals, both of which sit decidedly forward from here:
In 2010, we will drive user experience improvements, and the progress we make will take the Symbian user interface to a new level...[Nokia will] deliver our first Maemo 6-powered mobile computer, with an iconic user experience, in the second half of 2010.
Forward in terms of time, obviously, but more importantly in terms of progress: Symbian is getting stale and needs this UI update badly, while Maemo, despite a generally positive reception, is still a little raw, with a slim device selection for at least another year. You can probably assume that Maemo 6 will be more polished and ready for the mainstream, but for now it's just words on paper.
That said, Nokia's self-help regimen will take time. Nokia expects their mobile device volume market share to stay flat for 2010, partly due to their conspicuous absence from the growing US smartphone scene, but mostly, I'm guessing, because even in their European strongholds, Symbian devices are starting to feel plain old.
So yeah, all eyes on Nokia, because things are just about to get exciting! In a year.

So, hypothetical situation. You're perched on the roof of a skyscraper, peering across a lengthy chasm to the adjacent building, where your destination lies. You're suddenly overcome with doubt and uncertainty! If only you had some sort of portable parkour training manual which could show you the proper timing and form for such a jump. Fortunately, your hypothetical needs are being tended to. According to a recent EA press release, the high-flying, first-person adventure, Mirror's Edge, will soon land on iPhones and iPod Touches.
A few screenshots for the title (which is due out in January) show that while it will be in 3D, we'll be operating from a side-scrolling perspective rather than being stuck within Faith's head.

Last night, we wrote a story about a letter sent by Emblaze to Apple, claiming that an iPhone live streaming app was infringing one of its media streaming patents.
We wondered why Apple received the letter, which was offering to license the technology, when the cause was an application released by a third-party developer for iPhone.
However, a spokesperson for Emblaze subsidiary Else Mobile has confirmed the comment made by a John Green on our original story - that it's the API being used by the Knocking Live Video app that's the focus.
"The commenter is correct: the Live Streaming API is part of the Apple operating system (iPhone OS) - it is embedded within the OS without any need to write any application code," the spokesperson tells ME.
"Knocking is simply another application that happens to use these capabilities. We sent Apple a notice letter informing them of the infringement and offering them to license our technology."
We'll have to wait and see what Apple's response is. The company is facing a separate patent infringement lawsuit from Nokia relating to some of the other technology inside the iPhone.
However, it should be noted that at this point, Emblaze is not actually suing Apple.

iPhone is still seen by many people (and a lot of IT departments) as predominantly a consumer phone.
However, Vodafone UK looks set to tout the iPhone 3GS as a business handset when it starts selling the device early next year.
In an email sent to its business customers titled 'Introducing iPhone 3GS for business', the operator promises that "with highly secure corporate email, calendar, contacts and thousands of business apps, iPhone 3GS is ready to go to work".
The email goes on to highlight the device's email, calendar and contacts features, as well as the way its Safari browser can securely access corporate intranet sites.
Vodafone also stresses the quality of its network, including for voice calls.
Touting the iPhone 3GS as a business handset isn't a new idea - O2 offers the device on business tariffs already - but it shows Vodafone is planning to look beyond pure consumers when it starts selling the device next year.

Two guards at a Washington, DC jail were arrested on federal bribery charges for suspicion of accepting cash to smuggle contraband to inmates: specifically iPods, cell phones and chargers. The devices are prohibited, in part, because they can be used to hack security equipment in the jail.
According to a story in the Washington Post, an inmate went to the FBI in October 2008 to report that guards were taking bribes to smuggle personal electronics into the US capital city's jail. An FBI agent posed as the brother of an inmate, and met with Braxton and Ford. Over the last two years, the agent gave the guards several hundred dollars to smuggle a phone, an iPod and a charger to inmates at the jail.

There has been no substantial change in the number of adult brain tumours since mobile phone usage sharply increased in the mid-1990s, Danish scientists say.
The Danish Cancer Society looked at the rates of brain tumours among 20 to 79 year olds from Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden.
They found that trends in cancer rates had not altered from the period before mobiles were introduced.
But they say longer follow-up studies are needed.
The research, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, says radio frequency electromagnetic fields emitted from mobile phones have been proposed as a risk factor for brain tumours, but a biological mechanism that could explain the potential effects has not been identified.
Cancer incidence
The study was based on 59,684 brain tumour cases diagnosed over 30 years from 1974 to 2003 among 16 million adults.
Brain tumours often take a very long time to develop so we will need to look for any future changes in incidence rates to see if mobile phones could pose any longer-term risks
Dr Alison Ross, Cancer Research UK
During this time, the incidence rate of cancers known as gliomas increased gradually by 0.5% per year among men and by 0.2% per year among women.
For cancers known as meningioma, the incidence rate increased by 0.8% among men and, after the early 1990's, by 3.8% among women.
This more rapid change for women was driven, the researchers say, by the 60-79 year age group.
Isabelle Deltour, of the Danish Cancer Society in Copenhagen who led the study said the lack of a detectable increase in tumour rates up to 2003 may suggest that the time it takes for cancer to develop from mobile phone use is longer than 10 years of exposure or that the number of tumours it promotes is too small to be detected.
She said: "Our results extend those of previous studies of time trends up to 1998 by adding five years of follow-up.
"Because of the high prevalence of mobile phone exposure in this population and worldwide, longer follow-up of time trends in brain tumour incidence is warranted."
Further research
Dr Alison Ross, Cancer Research UK's senior science information officer, agreed that further research was needed: "Overall, the scientific evidence tells us that using mobile phones for less than 10 years does not increase the risk of cancer and this large study supports that conclusion.
"However, brain tumours often take a very long time to develop so we will need to look for any future changes in incidence rates to see if mobile phones could pose any longer-term risks."
Mike Dolan, of the Mobile Operators Association which represents all five UK network operators said: "This finding is consistent with previous studies in this field and will form part of the overall body of scientific research.
"The UK mobile phone operators are supporting a large cohort study which is a recommendation of this paper."

Analyst also looking towards 'iPad'
Analyst firm IDC has predicted that there will be more than 300,000 iPhone apps by the end of next year, compared to 75,000 Android apps.
That said, analyst Frank Gens is pretty bullish on Android's prospects.
"The advantage of Android - that it's more 'open' than the iPhone platform - creates more compatibility challenges for developers," he says.
"But the developer and app momentum will nevertheless grow strongly in 2010," he says.
Gens predicts that a big chunk of the new iPhone apps will come from "well-known Global 2000 business and consumer brands", aiding the momentum of iPhone.
Meanwhile, IDC has also forecast that Apple WILL release its 'iPad' tablet device by the end of 2010, with Gens claiming it will be more like an oversized iPod touch than a downsized Mac.

The US Federal Trade Commission has expressed concern at the widely differing approaches to age ratings for mobile games within operator portals and app stores.
In a wider report on violent entertainment and children, the FTC looked specifically at how mobile games are marketed.
Its report claims that US operators AT&T, Sprint and Verizon don't carry age-rating information for mobile games on their portals, but that Nokia and Apple do on their app stores.
However, even then the FTC is concerned that these systems don't necessarily dovetail with the existing ESRB ratings for console and PC games.
"Although mobile game sellers should be commended for instituting rating systems for their products, the proliferation of different systems has the potential to create consumer confusion with the ESRB ratings, a system with which parents are already familiar," says the report.
For now, the FTC is advising parents to monitor what games their children are downloading on their phones.
It's a relatively new issue, and one that's been tackled head-on by Apple with its age-ratings system.
However, with handsets now eminently capable of showing hi-res gore'n'violence, the debate around how mobile games should be rated - and using which system - is set to intensify.

A group of US students has created an entire orchestra out of separate iPhone applications.
As part of their studies, the group from the University of Michigan built the applications themselves and composed music for them.
While some of the applications sound similar to traditional instruments, others make unique noises.
The iPhone handsets are attached to speakers which the performers wear around their wrists.
A live concert of the students' original compositions is planned for 9 December. It will mark the end of their three-month course, run by Austrian computer scientist and musician Georg Essl.
He told BBC News that while the concept of using computers to make music was not new, the rise of smartphones had made the idea more practical.
"I come from this community of people who work on sophisticated ways of making sounds," he said, "but they tend to be very handcrafted prototypes. I realised that few people end up using them."
"Now everybody has a smartphone, the question of how you get an instrument into people's hands has disappeared."
Starting from scratch
Unlike traditional instruments, iPhones do not have to be physically modified for sound, Mr Essl said.
The in-built microphone can be transformed into a non-speech sensor, enabling students to blow into it in order to mimic a wind instrument.
The motion sensors can also be used musically - an application can be programmed to sound different when the device is tilted, for example - but the desired effect is down to the individual designer.
"In many ways, composition for us means composing the instrument as well as the music," said Mr Essl. "We can choose what a tilt will mean."
He admitted that the new technology was a work in progress that would advance as the devices themselves became more sophisticated.
"It's about playing with what you're given," he said. "The piccolo is never going to play the bass line."
Back to basics
Some traditional orchestras agree that smartphones have a part to play in making professional music.
There are lots of applications that are incredibly useful to musicians - our piano tuner uses the iPhone tuner application to tune Steinway pianos for our performances at City Hall
Stephen Duffy, Scottish Symphony Orchestra
"There are lots of applications that are incredibly useful to musicians - our piano tuner uses the iPhone tuner application to tune Steinway pianos for our performances at City Hall," said Stephen Duffy, spokesperson for the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
"Every musician I know who has an iPhone uses that application."
However, he added that most classical musicians did not take the instrument applications particularly seriously.
"Let's face it, you're not going to play a concerto on an iPhone. It would be interesting to see what people do as a group - but applications will never replace the real thing."

Swiss iPhone developer Nicolas Seriot presented last night a talk on iPhone Privacy in Geneva. He showed how a malicious application could harvest personal data on a non-jailbroken iPhone (PDF) and without using private APIs. It turns out that the email accounts, the keyboard cache content and the WiFi connection logs are fully accessible. The talk puts up several recommendations. There is also a demo project on github."

It's a minor update, but the Android 2.0.1 SDK just came out, mostly consisting of little bug fixes (Bluetooth, resource allocation, that kind of thing). Alongside that, there'll be an OTA update for the Droid in "the coming weeks."
The Android 2.0.1 update should be out by the end of the year, but Droid owners (the only ones lucky enough to play with Android 2.0 at the moment) will also get an OTA update with a few Droid-specific fixes. We're told these include improved camera autofocus (thank God) and better voice reception (although in my experience the Droid's reception is stellar). We'll let you know when it's released, which should be before New Years.

Truly open-development, open-source phones like the Nokia N900 will never hit the mainstream in the US because wireless carriers in the country hate the unexpected, writes PCMag's Sascha Segan. The open-source philosophy is all about unexpected, disruptive ideas bubbling upwards, and that drives network planners nuts. So, you get unsatisfactory hybrids like Google Android, which uses some open-source components but locks third-party developers into a crippled Java sandbox. The bottom line is that while Linux the OS, the kernel, and the memory manager are attractive to phone manufacturers, Linux the philosophy — and users banding together ad hoc to create new things — is anathema to wireless carriers.

Barence writes to mention that Nokia is giving users a first glimpse at what promises to be a completely overhauled Symbian user experience this coming year. Nokia's chief exec blamed the user interface — as opposed to the OS itself — as the root problem.
"The company will roll out a completely re-engineered user interface in 2010, aimed at addressing many of the criticisms associated with the OS. 'We will reduce the clutter and improve the input methods including multi-touch and single tap,' Kallasvuo told delegates. 'It should be just two taps to get to your favorite music or videos, rather than eight. We'll improve browser experience so that it's a quicker, flash improved, media experience with pinch-to-zoom and so on.' And, Kallasvuo wasn't stopping there. Aside from completely redesigning the interface, he also suggested that future Symbian OSes would be much faster."

George "GeoHot" Hotz has asked for help - in a tweet yesterday - from the jailbreak community in winning the DARPA Network Challenge. If he wins, he says, he will create an untethered jailbreak for the iPhone 3GS.
The DARPA Network Challenge is a competition that explores the role the Internet and social networking play in the timely communication, wide-area team-building, and urgent mobilization required to solve broad-scope, time-critical problems.
The challenge is to be the first to submit the locations of 10 moored, 8-foot, red, weather balloons at 10 fixed locations in the continental United States. The balloons will be in readily accessible locations and visible from nearby roads.

Palm is being sued by Artifex Software over the PDF viewer in Palm's Pre smartphone, which may violate the GNU GPL. Artifex alleges that Palm has copied Artifex's PDF rendering engine, called muPDF, and integrated it into the Palm Pre's PDF viewer application without the proper licensing conditions. The entire application must be licensed under the GPL if muPDF is part of the application. It seems more and more cell phones are shipping with open source code, but in a closed manner.

Several sources have shared the news that "Google Goggles," publicly known as Google Visual Search, will be "coming soon" to an Android phone near you. Rather than typing in the search term, you will be able to just take a picture with your phone and search results will be returned. The new search was recently featured on CNBC's "Inside the Mind of Google." Unfortunately Goggles didn't pass muster with a recent focus group, so it could be a while before Google decides this is ready to hit the streets.

Look what we have here -- a preview of 3G4, a N64 emulator developed by NWorksDev. Compatible with the iPhone 3GS and the iPod Touch 3G, this bad boy appears to be rendering down the graphics (as one would expect) but all in all it seems to be running pretty smoothly. Of course, this is a work in progress: the developer (who claims to 14 years old) says that he has to overcome duplicate button registers, delayed presses, and some crashing -- and he has yet to implement the L, R, and Z keys. That said, this thing is pretty sweet! Hit up the YouTube links for info on becoming a beta tester -- but not before you see the thing in action after the break.

Molinker, the prolific Chinese development company behind numerous iPhone apps, saw all its titles pulled from the App Store on Sunday after an attentive user noted that most - if not all - of its five-star reviews appeared to be fake. The scam caused over 1,000 apps - nearly 1% of all of the titles on the App Store - to disappear at once.
The user, "SCW," contacted a Glyn Evans of the iphoneography blog whom he knew to have contacts at Apple top management. SCW had noted something odd about the glowing (and poorly written) reviews of the "NightCam Pro" app and went through the applications offered by Molinker. As many as 90% of the reviews on some of their applications appeared to be written by a group of people who only reviewed Molinker applications. On “NightCam Proâ€, for example, 42 of the 44 5-star reviews appeared to be fake.

Apple has published two 'Top Sellers' charts of games and apps for 2009, which reveals the titles that generated the most cash on its iPhone App Store this year.
Seven of the top 30 games are from EA Mobile, representing a hugely successful year for the publisher, which has brought a succession of its big console brands to iPhone.
Gameloft has three games in the top 30, while Australian independent studio Firemint has entries from both its games: Real Racing and Flight Control. The full list can be seen here (link opens iTunes).
In the separate apps list, navigation applications are to the fore, with ALK's CoPilot, TomTom, Navigon's Mobile Navigator and Sygic's Mobile Maps Europe all present and correct.
Other apps to have coined it in include chef Jamie Oliver's 20 Minute Meals app, Smule's I Am T-Pain, Arsenal FC's official app, and Sling Media's SlingPlayer Mobile.

Slashdot reported last week on research published by Swiss iPhone developer Nicolas Seriot about security holes in unjailbroken - that's UNjailbroken - iPhones that could potentially compromise email accounts, browser history and even keytaps held in cache. The closed and unmodifiable nature of the stock iPhone OS means that malware could be carried by any app: even one legitimately purchased and downloaded from the App Store.
In a talk on iPhone privacy in Geneva, Seriot described how a malicious application could harvest personal data on a non-jailbroken iPhone (PDF) without using private APIs. The presentation makes several suggestions to Apple on how to make the native iPhone environment more secure.

Currently I have the dynamic recompilation running without the trampoline pattern (thanks to hinkka’s tips), so there’s no deoptimizations in the dynarec side anymore. However the speed is not nearly as good as it should be. It seems that the main issue is somewhere in the Symbian SDL port. Therefore I decided to dump the SDL port, and make my own port with Qt.
The Qt will be the UI system for Symbian^4 and for future Maemo platforms, so they can easily be supported after this change. So basically I’ll be getting much better compatibility too. Actually the Qt is already working on the Current Maemo 5 and N900! The dynarecs were originally written for linux, so there really shouldn’t be any issues compiling and running the same SW with Maemo devices too.
Using Qt with S60 versions from 3.1 to 5.0 is a bit more challenging. I doubt that the Qt’s blit is fast enough, so I’ll have to make old S60 blit-functions for them, but it’s OK, I’ll switch to the Qt blit later on.
I’ll be using the Qt 4.6 which was released a while ago.

Online video firm Ustream has released its Ustream Live Broadcaster app for iPhone, which lets users stream live video from their handset to the web.
A big deal? Yep. It's the first one-to-many live video broadcasting app to be approved by Apple for distribution in the App Store. What's more, it allows the video to be streamed over 3G or Wi-Fi.
The free application is available today (App Store link), and allows users to chat to people watching the stream while broadcasting, as well as notifying their Twitter followers that a stream has started.
Videos can also be saved and then uploaded to the main Ustream website, as well as Facebook and YouTube. It's likely to be followed by apps from Ustream's rivals online, like Qik.
Previously, Ustream has released two iPhone applications: one that lets people watch video from its site, and another that lets people upload their recorded videos (but not broadcast live).

Vendor claims 90 per cent of UK music downloads are made illegally
The director of iTunes Europe, Oliver Schusser has said that the vendors top priority for 2010 is to combat illegal file sharing.
In an interview with the BBC, Schusser cited statistics from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) reporting that 90 per cent of music downloaded in the UK is stolen.
“Our number one challenge for the sixth year in a row is to continue to convince people that it is better to get content in the legal way than actually steal it from the internet,†said Schusser. “2010 unfortunately won't be different, we'll still be working with the record labels and service providers.
“But it is amazing how much progress we've made in the past five years. I think for all the people who are willing to pay, and I believe there is a big portion of honest people, we and other services have provided a great alternative for getting music.â€

Computer industry observers have been leaning on their contacts for months trying to divine when (or if) the long-rumored, never-yet-seen Apple tablet might be coming to reality. Now an analyst with ties to the suppliers who would likely be involved says that the wheels are being set in motion for manufacturing to begin in February, with a likely release in March or April.
Analyst Yair Reiner frequently reports on Apple's plans for the investment bank Oppenheimer. Since he provides advice to people who are moving billions of dollars around, he has a lot of motivation to avoid wild speculation. AppleInsider revealed the contents of a note from Reiner to investors this morning that said his informants in the supply chain in Taiwan and China indicate that “the manufacturing cogs for the [device] are creaking into action†to begin

Sensing growing dissent among plenty of frustrated developers at every turn, Apple is continuing to put forward efforts in good faith to make the app approval process as transparent and "open" as possible - at least for a fiercely private company like Apple.
This week Apple is busy notifying developers that there is a new tool available to help achieve that stated goal. Thanks to a new iPhone developer RSS feed on Apple's site, developers can stay on top of news and announcements pertinent to their work and the at large iphone developer community.

I would like some constructive user feedback from nes4iphone users on ways to improve the software. I’d like to avoid the flame wars that have occurred over this software.
That being said, I am working on bringing both snes4iphone and nes4iphone to Cydia so that it will no longer be exclusive to RockApp. So the hardcore Cydia fans will get what has been highly requested assuming all goes well.
From what I gather, there is still room for compatibility. I’ve heard reports of games like Punchout having issues though I haven’t confirmed whether it’s a “hacked ROM†issue. There is also the issue that the WiiMote control system, while it works fine, does take up more CPU processing power than it seemingly should. I am planning on working on performance of nes4iphone so that it runs 100% smoothly even with WiiMote on the slower 1st gen iPhone and iPod Touch.
I am purchasing a PS3 controller in the morning thanks to two very kind donators. It seems PS3 controllers for use with my emulators will become a reality like WiiMote is. This is all thanks to the BTstack project!
Thanks and eagerly awaiting feedback,
ZodTTD

Samsung is betting there's room for more in the smartphone market and has unveiled its new bada OS. The name 'bada,' means 'ocean' in Korean and was chosen to convey the 'limitless variety of potential applications which can be created using the new platform.' Samsung claims the OS is extremely simple for developers, saying that bada was built to be extremely interactive with its users — including flash control, motion sensing, fine-tuned vibration control and face detection. Samsung is hoping developers will take this user interface and create a variety of applications focused around it, and thus provide different types of apps than exist for the iPhone and Android OS. The bada OS has a variety of sensors, including accelerometers, tilt, weather, proximity and activity. Samsung will be hosting a series of Developer Days in Seoul, London and San Francisco, among other cities, throughout 2010

Using a Wii remote as the controller for iPhone games? Brilliant! We’ve been waiting to see some creative usage of this pairing since we covered it back in August. [ZodTTD] is the person who ported MAME over to the iPhone. Now he’s added support for the Wii remote in Mame4iPhone via the BTstack project. BTstack seeks to add Bluetooth stack functionality to devices that don’t have it or where it is limited (the iPhone).
We’ve embedded video after the break of the WiiMote used to play a MAME game. [ZodTTD] is also the author of nes4iPhone, we hope that’s the next project he will add BTstack support to!

Did you get your ODROID order in promptly when they went up for pre-sale back in September? Hope so, as the first lucky developers should be getting theirs any day now. Just 300 units of the 833MHz handheld are shipping, including the various cables, additional hardware, and documentation needed to start filling the thing with fun games that look an awful lot like other games, but totally aren't. One of the first is Speed Forge 3D (which totally isn't Wipeout), shown after the break exhibiting some laggy accelerometer-based controls -- but 720p output via HDMI sure is sweet. Orders are still being accepted at $349, said to be shipping in roughly five days, meaning if Santa logs into his PayPal account quickly enough you might still find one of these under your tree.

Neowin has released a report that claims Microsoft is working on two new applications for the AppStore, one being a Bing application and the other for Windows Live Messenger on the iPhone. Unfortunately the applications won't be released until March, which should time nicely with their release of Windows Live Wave 4 updates.
Quote:
"Everyone understands the popularity and the pervasiveness of the platform," said Microsoft principal group program manager David Raissipour, following a Bing event Wednesday. "We are actively working on it."

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office today released more than 20 patents that Apple has applied for over the past year, covering products that may or may not ever be available for sale. AppleInsider reviewed some of the patents: one of which is for an anti-tampering label, and another for a new accelerometer-based user interface. A third is for a revolutionary new dock that could fit any current - or likely future - device.
The anti-tampering label would attach to different spots inside of a device, such as on a case lid and a part of the chassis, so that if you were to try to take the device apart you would rip, damage or

The issue of App Store rejection has been a sore one for developers for some time. Many have criticized Apple's demanding policies which require apps to be reviewed and approved before releasing them for sale, as well as the lack of transparency and the long delays experienced by some developers. Could Apple finally be responding to all the frustration?
AppleInsider reported today on a company whose app was approved by Apple even though it was in violation of the licensing agreement. The app, iSimulate, used a non-public API which has been used by Apple in the past as a reason to reject applications. But rather than just shoot the dev down, Apple gave its approval with a polite note requesting that they fix it for their next release of the app.

alphadogg, as is his wont, sends in a Network World piece on the resurgent rumors of a Google Phone.
"Google has handed out a new mobile phone running its Android software to some employees, stirring another wave of speculation that the oft-rumored Google Phone is real. In a blog post on Saturday morning, Google said the phones are being distributed so that workers can experiment with new mobile features. It did not say the device will be a Google-branded phone. Since even before Google unveiled Android, onlookers have wondered whether the search giant will release its own phone. Instead, it released an open source operating system that other hardware vendors can use to make phones."

Look familiar? For a story that broke on Twitter it's only fitting that the first reported picture of the mythical, magical "Google Phone" (AKA, Nexus One) would appear there as well. The tweeted image above appears courtesy of one Cory O'Brien, an account manager at a San Francisco Bay Area marketing agency that does not list Google as a client. That note of caution aside, the image above is an exact match to that leaked HTC Passion / Bravo image from October, only this time lacking the HTC logo on the top-side bezel. Besides the pic, O'Brien tweets that the "Google Phone = iPhone + a little extra screen and a scroll wheel. Great touch screen, and Android." Granted, none of this is confirmed yet, but with Google releasing so many of the devices as part of its "mobile lab" concept, well, we expect to see plenty more sightings in the run up to the rumored January launch.
Update: A quick search for "nexus one" on Google's Picasa photo service reveals several pictures taken with a camera pegged as the HTC Nexus One in the EXIF data. The very first of these geotagged 2592×1944 pixel (that's a 5 megapixel sensor folks, hardly "weirdly large" as described by TechCrunch) images were taken by user Bradley (who just happens to be a Picasa friend to Sergey... hint) in the SF Bay Area on November 27th. A few are clearly lit by an onboard flash as well. In fact, many of the pics appear to be taken from within Google's offices and at Google sponsored events. The quality is not exactly spectacular and that won't likely change in the final product because even Google's bound by the laws of physics when it comes to tiny cellphone sensors.

A new website has been developed that features a petition against Apple to stop their unfair practices and protect developers, called Petition Apple Competition. The petition was started to lobby the FCC, to intervene on consumers behalf regarding Apple’s monopolistic behaviours in the iPhone Application marketplace. Although Apple has seemed to loosen its grip on what is Approved for the AppStore lately, we all know it's still not quite enough.

It's been clear for some time that the iPhone is a huge moneymaker for both Apple and its US carrier AT&T, as well as the constellation of component suppliers that make parts for it. Tracking the actual dollar figures, though, is a difficult task given the complexity of the iPhone ecosystem and the secrecy surrounding Apple and AT&T's business relationship. A post on GigaOM this week, though, took a stab at pulling together what's known and believed to be true about the iPhone business, and did it in an innovative, highly readable format. Instead of a long post filled with dry facts and figures, the site created a graphic with simple charts and graphs. It's an interesting "read."
For the 5.2 million iPhones it built in the third quarter of this year, Apple spent $1 billion with its components...

If you were looking for just one more reason to ditch Sprint then this could be it. A CDMA-flavored Palm Pixi just cleared the FCC -- yes, another one -- and we can say with confidence it's not coming to Sprint this time around. Better yet, Palm's model P121EWW matches up with that P121 code we saw leaked a while back for Big Red (Sprint's model is P120EWW), and this sucker got tested for 802.11b/g WiFi. Looks like that Sprint ad touting the Pixi's non-existent WiFi was more than just wishful thinking. With webOS-powered Palm gear already confirmed on Verizon for "early next year," are you really going to make the jump to a WiFi-less Pixi on Sprint knowing what's on the way? And more importantly, can we expect another terrifying series of ads targeting Sprint this time instead of AT&T?

Bank account not mighty enough to handle an underwater EOS 5D Mark II? Fret not, 'cause H2O Audio just made underwater Terminator captures a reality for a comparative pittance. Said outfit has been cranking out waterproof shells for Apple's cash cows for awhile now, but the latest one is of particular interest due to the iPod nano 5G's integrated video recorder. The $79.99 case enables you to capture video clips while under the sea, and considering the multitude of wild and wacky scene modes, we'd say next summer just got a lot more interesting. Just ask that dude up there if you don't believe us.

In a report that is raising eyebrows and some laughs throughout the iPhone user community, a marketing firm in Denmark announced that dedicated fans of Apple's smartphones are suffering from a delusional syndrome akin to that experienced by kidnap victims.
Analyst firm Strand Consult released a report called “How will psychologists describe the iPhone syndrome in the future?†in which they compare the often-defensive attitude shown by iPhone owners to â€Stockholm Syndrome.†Stockholm Syndrome is described as a psychological response, in which hostages develop sympathy and loyalty towards their captors.
The reports explains that iPhone fans spend lots of their energy “defending the product despite the shortcomings and limitations of both past and present versions of the iPhone.â€

Apple has revamped the design of iPhone app product pages in the desktop version of its App Store.
The changes give more prominence to screenshots, and cut the space available on-screen for descriptive text - although users can still read the full descriptions by clicking a '...More' link.
The new design is certainly visually appealing, and will suit the more impressive-looking apps - particularly games.
However, the changes are also likely to spark some frantic rewriting of app descriptions by developers, to ensure they have a much more sparky introductory paragraph.
There's also a prominent carousel of 'Customers also bought' apps at the bottom of every app product page.

Well here you have it folks, honest-to-goodness pics of the Google Phone... AKA, the Nexus One. As you can see by the photos, the design of the device is largely similar to those we've seen, but the graphic on back is slightly different, and that piece of tape is covering a QR code (how very Google of them). Just like we've heard before, the updated OS features new 3D elements to the app tray, as well as an extended amount of homescreens, though it looks like the lock screen / mute is the same as in Android 2.0.1. Additionally, there's now a new grid icon at the bottom of the homescreen, which when pressed brings up a webOS card-style preview of all homescreen pages -- which raises some interesting possibilities. Apparently there's been a new software update for the device pushed tonight, and sure enough the phone is identified as the Nexus One on the system info page. Quite clearly this device is running on T-Mobile, and is also using WiFi, so there's two other questions you've got answers to. The phone also appears to come loaded up with Google Navigation (a bit of a no-brainer) and the brand-spanking-new Google Goggles. Hardware wise, the Nexus does look incredibly thin and sleek, and while there's not a slew of buttons (those four up front are clearly touch sensitive), there is a dedicated volume rocker along the side. Oh, and note this... no HTC logo anywhere to be found. We'll update the post as / if we get more info, but for now, feast your eyes on the gallery below!

Developers are claiming that ZeniMedia - the parent company of games firm iD Software - has filed a DMCA takedown notice with Google to remove clones of Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein from its Android Market Store.
The move may simply be for copyright protection purposes, but it could signify the imminent debut of official Android versions of some or all of the games.
However, the news is slightly confusing, given that the source code from at least one of the original games, Doom, is available open-source.
Clones of the games are still available from sources other than Android Market, however.
Google's store is certainly coming onto the radar of more games developers right now, thanks to increasing Android handset sales.
However, its Market still has a Wild West feel when it comes to copyright - witness the popularity of retro console emulators, which are barred from some other app stores (including Apple's).

If you've seen the internet this weekend, you've heard about it: the "real Google phone" that "changes everything." But before we get carried away, a counterpoint: Google isn't magic. And the Nexus One isn't a game-changer—at least for now.
And I don't mean to say that I don't understand what the Nexus One is, or what Google's trying to do. Nor am I saying that Google plan for the Nexus One—to offer a different type of cellphone buying experience than US customers are accustomed to, and to provide a model for future Android handset—is a particularly bad one. I'm saying that I don't get the hype: Google's Nexus one is an interesting experiment, not some kind of disruptive Google coup. Consider the facts:
It's an HTC Android handset. Sounds familiar! This means that on a material level, it's barely more of a Google phone than the G1—which Google passively oversaw—or the Motorola Droid—which Google actively helped design. And hey, people remember: Google still isn't a hardware company. Not even close.
It's not revolutionary hardware. It's the third (at least) Snapdragon-powered Android phone we've heard about. It's got a 5-megapixel camera. It's got dual microphones, to help with noise reduction. It's fairly thing. These are nice features for a new phone, but they're more or less exactly what we'd expect HTC to be working on next.
It's running a minor variant on Android 2.0. This is version 2.1, to be specific. We've seen builds of 2.1, albiet covered in the Sense UI, leaked for the HTC Hero (spoiler: not that impressive), and combined with the early glimpses we've caught from spy shots, they give the feeling that 2.1 isn't much of a step up from 2.0, which is what the Droid ships with. There will be some pretty new UI flourishes, and maybe a few UX changes. Again: this is typical, paced progress, not a drastic overhaul.
The new business model isn't really new. Even the most breathless commentary on the Nexus One admits that what the Nexus one means is more important than what's on its spec sheet. And yeah, it'll be the first phone marketed as the Google phone, and Google sales strategy—to offer the device without contract first, and probably unlocked, with a (hardware limited) choice of carriers—is foreign to the US market. But it's far from unheard of: you can buy unlocked phones at Best Buy, for God's sake. Oh, and Nokia's been handling their US smartphone releases like this for years.
Google doesn't have superpowers. Using their unmatched internet superpowers, Google can do more to convince the general public that an expensive, unsubsidized phone is a good idea than Nokia, whose marketing efforts have been wimpy and ineffective. But they can't do anything crazy, like give this thing away. They can sell it for cheap by relying on their own advertising network—or hell, their homepage—for advertising, as well as the massive press coverage they're already getting, and selling it at little to no profit. But to be able to match carriers' prices will be a stretch: They can absorb the cost of the phone in month-to-month fees and overage charges. What does Google have? Theoretical advertising revenue?
If what we see now is what we're going to get, the Nexus One is something worth paying attention to. It will be a way for Google to demonstrate what their vision for Android is without carrier interference. They'll control the software experience on the phone; they'll control how it's updated; they'll control what software is and isn't allowed on it. And they could use it to convey an vision for Google Voice, in which Google supplies your number, your nonstandard calling rates and your texting allowance, while carriers simply supply a neutral, dumb and ultimately out-of-sight cellular connection. But even if that is what they're doing—we don't know!—the Nexus One is a first step. It'll be an early product to guide progress, not the product that'll define it.
Whenever we talk about Google, we need to factor in a little windage. They're buzzy, they're huge, and they've thrown plenty of other industries curveballs before. This phone sits at the hype nexus (for lack of a better word) of Google Voice, Android, Google's online services and HTC. But for now, to say that the Nexus One has somehow changed everything is to buy into their reputation too sincerely, and to ascribe to Google mystical qualities—and to take for granted a series of future actions that Google hasn't even hinted at fulfilling yet.
Or, to compress it to 140 characters or less: "The Google phone matters as much as Google makes it matter." For now, people, calm down.

A dramatic surge in orders to chipmakers suggests that Apple may ship more than 10 million iPhones per quarter for the first time, according to a organization that follows the Taiwan electronics industry. A study from the Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute in Taipei, quoted by DigiTimes, says that deliveries of chips used in smartphones increased by 31% from spring to summer and asserts that many of them were destined for Apple phones.

Boy Genius Report, the website of the popular Engadget blogger, posted an excerpt from their server visitor log that showed browsers claiming to be using the "iPhone OS 4_0" and "iPhone OS 3_1_3" operating systems accessing the site. Observers have seized on this as evidence that a new OS revisions are being tested on the Internet, though the log entries are not in themselves proof that these systems exist.
Just a few weeks ago, an iPhone carrying the hardware designation "3,1" was spotted by Pandav, the developers of iBart, on the San Francisco Bay Area's rapid transit system. The combination on new hardware codes and software user agents has encouraged the spread of talk about new releases.

News via http://0xff.akop.org/2009/12/11/adve...-android-land/
My XBox Live application for Android has been out for a while now, and while feedback has been mixed, it has been rather encouraging. If you’re interested, you can check it out by using Android’s Barcode Scanner app to snap the image to the right.
As feedback shows, a small percentage of users are understandably wary of providing their email address and password to the application, and completely refuse to use it. Most of the current applications that perform similar functions use the XBox Live proprietary API, which requires only a gamertag to obtain similar information. gsDroid, on the other hand, obtains its information by signing in to the XBox Live site and scanning it for information. The upside of this is that I can generally obtain a lot more information than the (free, but proprietary) API can provide. The downside is that it takes a lot of time to fetch this information, and process it raw. And of course, it requires a user’s full account information – the gamertag alone will not suffice.
To make things worse, shortly before releasing gsDroid, I realized that I went about the application completely wrong. gsDroid schedules itself as a service, and performs a full update every 15 minutes. This means that it must refresh the list of games, achievements and friends at each 15-minute interval. Most users need only an up-to-date friends list, and only occasionally an updated list of games; yet gsDroid’s design does not make it easy to do this. Instead of completely scrapping everything, I decided to release gsDroid as a free application.
That is why shortly after releasing the application, I started working on another version, designed from the ground up to be a lot more flexible, and not fetch information unless necessary. Work is progressing along nicely, and I’m already seeing a lot of improvement over gsDroid’s design – for one thing, the seemingly age-long initial synchronization process is completely gone, and while, say, initial fetch of your game list does take some time, it doesn’t take nearly as much time as with gsDroid. For this reason, gsDroid’s not likely to receive any newer features – most of my spare time is currently going towards the new application.
To keep up with the application’s progress, keep checking this site; I will try to post information on new features as it comes up.

Red, green, blue, yellow. They aren't just four of the bestest shades in Roy G. Biv -- to anyone with a computer and a soul, that particular color combo is permanently etched in the brain as the unchanging constituents of the Windows logo in its many, many forms over the years; Google's logo happens to use them, true, but so far, Android's been green to the bone. Anyhow, you may have already noticed that some of the shots of the Nexus One clearly show a boot screen with a cross pattern colored thusly, and it turns out there's an Android 2.1 dump floating around that's got the animation on board. Of course, dumped ROMs have a tendency to get pulled apart like a turkey at Thanksgiving dinner in a matter of mere hours, and the animation's already found its way onto YouTube. Just because it's in a hacked Flan ROM doesn't mean you should expect to see it on every Android phone under the sun next year -- the animation portrays a nexus, of sorts, which would fit in nicely with a phone of the same name.
Seriously though, check out the wait cursor in Windows Mobile 6.5 for comparison after the break (along with a video of the Nexus One's lovely boot sequence in action).

Konami has today released Wire Way for the iPhone and iPod touch. This platform game costs £2.99 Euro for the basic game, with additional stages available for just £1.19.
Starring an acrobatic hero called Wiley, the player is charged with helping him find the ‘Elan’ energy source he seeks. The Elan is spread across a series of hazard-laden stages, and Wiley swings from one taut wire to the next, as he locates the Elan icons and to the level end at the top of the screen. Control is simplicity itself, with the touch-screen system of the iPhone an iPod touch used to steer Wiley’s jumps, while the Elan icons temporarily endow him with faster speed and larger jump capabilities.
Additional game modes include ‘Flick Trials’ wherein the user must complete the stage in as few leaps as possible, and a ‘Strategery’ option where the player must edit the level to reach the exit. The expansion pack also adds an extra 16 stages to the basic game, and eight new Flick Trial and Strategy levels.

You had to know this was coming. That Android 2.1 OS that's been circulating inside the Google's ultra-exclusive Nexus One has hit the internet, and thanks to some clever hackery, you can now theoretically put the update on your Droid handset. We say theoretically, of course, because it's not quite a perfect rip. DIY instructions were briefly posted on Sholes.info but have since been replaced with a curt advisory to wait for a ROM that properly preserves file system permissions, else risking some serious breaking. The original image file is still available, but don't say we didn't warn you. Separately and perhaps unrelated, a video has surfaced of the Nexus One's boot animation running on Droid -- feel free to enjoy that instead, after the break.

It's titled Ridge Racer: Accelerated and it's out later this month - though it's not clear whether that date applies globally or just to Japan. There's no news on a price yet, either.

With total apps surpassing 20,000 this month, the gap in size—and consequently, quality—between the Android Market and the iPhone App Store is finally starting to close.
AndroLib's been tracking new submissions stats since the Market opened—stats which don't just show us when Android apps pass arbitrary milestones, but how quickly it's happening. And to answer the implied question: very.

PressOK Entertainment today launched updates for both the Free and Full versions of Finger Physics, an insanely addictive puzzle game that pits your fingers against the, (supposedly) infinite power of the laws of physics. The new update, now available for download, adds 9 new levels to the Free version, and 27 new levels to the Full version of Finger Physics.
"After announcing the incredible success of the original Finger Physics, we’re thrilled to provide more content for our dedicated fans to – ahem – get their fingers on," said Alex Kolosov, VP of Development for PressOK Entertainment. "This is just the beginning for Finger Physics, we fully expect to continue supporting this game with additional updates throughout the coming months."
First launched to the App Store in September 2009, Finger Physics slowly made its way to the top of the App Store, becoming the #1 free, and #4 paid game with over 2.1 million downloads. Fans who already own either the Free of Full version of Finger Physics can download the update free of charge. The updated Full version of Finger Physics is available on the App Store for $0.99.
The game has caused an intense anti-Finger Physics movement among Ring and Pinky fingers based on claims from Koloskov to involve the under-appreciated digits in early game development. Leading the movement against Finger Physics is Pinky Bandido, head of AFPLFUFP. â€This update only intensifies our resolve to bring Alex Koloskov to justice for repeatedly ignoring our requests,†stated Bandido. “We’re quite certain that these new levels were created simply to mock Pinky and Ring fingers everywhere, we will have our vengeance.†You can find more information about the Anti-Finger Physics League of Fingers Upset about Finger Physics (AFPLFUFP) at www.fingerphysics.com/afplfufp .

Discovery Communications and Capcom Mobile today announced the availability of the Cash Cab game on the App Store. Based on the hit Discovery Channel game show series, the Cash Cab App for iPhone and iPod Touch features tons of questions, 21 New York City landmarks, the ability to play your own music in-game, and players can now post their favorite scores directly to Facebook. Additionally, question expansion packs are now available from within the App for near limitless replayability.
In the television show Cash Cab, contestants ride in the back seat of a New York City taxicab and are quizzed on general knowledge questions all the way to their destination. As the meter ticks, the questions get harder and the stakes get higher. Miss three questions and the Cash Cab pulls over and ejects the contestants onto the sidewalk, no matter where they are in the city.
The Cash Cab App uses the Emmy Award-winning show's signature concept and challenges players to answer a series of progressively difficult questions before they get to their destination. Extending the TV show experience, gamers can keep coming back for more as questions are pulled from subjects as diverse as History, Pop Culture, Language and Science. The app also features a "Ride with a Friend" feature similar to the "Shout Out" option featured in the show.
The Cash Cab App is available for $4.99 from the App Store on iPhone and iPod Touch or atwww.itunes.com/appstore/.

appy day, iPhoners; your days of living life one hotspot at a time are over. You can now use that data plan for all its worth as more and more apps break through the WiFi-only iron curtain. Last week it was Ustream, the week before Knocking, and now EyeTV has released an updated app able to stream your own personal TV broadcast to your iPhone wherever you are. Assuming, of course, you're not situated within a "coverage gap" -- or a major metropolitan area.
Update: To be clear, this isn't actually a new App Store app, it's a webapp, available at live3g.eyetv.com via Safari and fed by an update to the service's desktop client.

We're still not totally clear on how exactly Verizon intends to enter (or rather, re-enter) the Palm stage in 2010; we know there's definitely a WiFi-equipped CDMA Pixi out there that'll likely find its way into Big Red's clutches, but otherwise, we really need to wait for this event at CES next month. Well, maybe -- we've got another little clue here in the form of some tips to PhoneArena stating that a "Pre Plus" has found its way into the carrier's systems, which fits in nicely with info we'd previously received from one of our trusted sources that Verizon's Pre would be somehow "different" from Sprint's though we don't yet know how. As far as we can tell, this isn't the same as that WiFi Pixi (wouldn't it be confusing if it was?), so we should probably expect at least two webOS models on Verizon over the next few months. In other news, that Motorola Calgary (pictured) appears to be shaping up as the "Devour" with a 3 megapixel cam and Blur running on Android 2.1 -- yes, 2.1, not 1.5, which should give hope to CLIQ owners that an update is probably in the works. Finally, there's talk of an LG VS750 in a mega-thin form factor running WinMo 6.5 with global roaming capability, but we don't have a picture of that one just yet. Anyhow, back to the Pre Plus, we're accepting all guesses as to what the "Plus" in the name might stand for -- 16GB of integrated storage or a microSD slot seem like obvious candidates, but feel free to get creative with us.

Codemasters has released an iPhone version of F1 2009 on the App Store.
You can grab it now for £3.99, and reader reviews so far appear to be positive.
There are 17 official circuits and "stunning graphics", although gameplay is limited to time trial modes - either posting a one-off best time or racing the Endurance mode and whittling your lap average down to its minimum.
F1 2009, Codemasters' first stab at the official licence, was released on Wii to an appreciative reception in November.

Here's something to glean from Palm's recent quarterly call, besides the still less-than-profitable fiscal number, of course. CEO Jon Rubinstein divulged that yes, we will indeed be seeing webOS 1.3.5 during CES early next month. Even better, we got some insight into what we'll be expecting from the update: more application storage (hooray!), better WiFi / app performance, improved battery life, and "increase Pixi speed and responsiveness" -- interesting that Pixi is called out solo for that last one, but we're not about to read too much into that just yet. Good news all around, but let's hope there's still a surprise or two left in store come January 7th.

Keeping in line with previous Need for Speed entries on the iPhone, EA today announced the release of Need for Speed: Shift on Apple's handheld for $9.99. The game features 20 cars to maneuver through 18 tracks with your phone's tilt functionality, and even play with your (presumably wealthy) friends via Bluetooth or over Wi-Fi.
EA included a handful of impressive screens below, though we can't imagine the graphics (which are enhanced for iPhone 3GS and third-generation iPod touch) will do much to mask the frustration of clumsily trying to control a simulation-style racing game with a mobile phone. We've been burned before, folks.

[Andrew] wanted a tablet computer but is tired of waiting for Apple to come up with one. eBay and Craig’s list to the rescue, he picked up some parts and built his own tablet. You can take a look at the video tour of it after the break, or peruse parts one, two, three, and four of his work log.
The unit is assembled from a 500 MHz iBook. [Andrew] picked up a touchscreen from ebay and canibalized a USB joystick in order to add some buttons to the keyboard-less design. The end product is quite nice. We’ve wanted a tablet computer to hang on the wall for a long time and this may be the inspiration that gets us there.

This article at CNet takes a detailed look at the growth of social gaming through Apple's iPhone, a market many developers — and Apple themselves — are still struggling to figure out. The piece also speculates on how such games and networks will continue to evolve. Quoting:
"While competition has spawned better features among these services, the future brings a growing need for a more unified network. Even if all these networks begin to become impossible to differentiate, users are eventually going to want a less-disjointed platform when jumping from game to game, and app to app. Thus far Facebook, and even Twitter to some degree have provided that constant, just by giving users a way to log in to these platforms. The unification can shake out in a number of ways though, the most likely of which is consolidation. Open Feint can continue to grow until it's snatched up by a larger company (like Apple). Or it can begin absorbing, or muscling out the other, less popular networks. As mentioned before, Apple plays a big part in this: not only in how it changes the hardware, but also how it continues to evolve the business of the App Store and information sharing between applications."

Palm is building upon the Mozilla Bespin project to deliver an IDE for the Palm Pre entirely in the web browser. Apps can be developed on the server and then downloaded and deployed locally. It is an interesting tool, especially given that WebOS is so web-centric. This tool comes as a supplement to the existing development tools for Eclipse and the command line released by Palm earlier this year. The project is open to anyone who registers as a Palm developer, which is free to do

Vodafone has confirmed that it will start selling the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS in the UK from 14th January.
The operator has started taking pre-orders today in-store and online, from both consumer and business customers.
The cheapest way to get an iPhone through the operator will be to sign up to a £35 24-month contract for the iPhone 3G.
The handset will be free, although being tied for two years to a phone that came out in mid-2008 is unappealing, to say the least.
The iPhone 3GS 16GB will be free to customers signing up for a £45 tariff for 24 months, or a £50 for 18 months.
Voda isn't offering unlimited data with these tariffs though: the plans only come with 1GB of data bundled in per month - albeit with an additional 1GB of data through BT Openzone's Wi-Fi network.
Customers who have pre-registered their interest and now pre-order will also get free Vodafone-to-Vodafone calls for the life of their initial contract.

Shocking news, people: Apple might hold WWDC at Moscone West in June, as it has for the past several years. That's at least the word according to AppleInsider, which just noticed that Moscone West is mysteriously booked from June 28 to July 2 by "Corporate Event," which has signified upcoming Apple events in the past. If you'll recall, the original iPhone was released in June of 2007, followed by the iPhone 3G at WWDC 2008 and the iPhone 3GS at WWDC 2009, so the smart money is on another refresh this year -- and you can't have whispers of an iPhone refresh without rumors about it coming to Verizon, so there's tons of chatter in the air. We're staying out of that for now, since we haven't heard anything new or particularly interesting, but we'd like to point out that we're also due an iPhone SDK event in March on Apple's campus if Steve holds to pattern -- anyone care speculate on what iPhone OS 4.0 might bring to the table?

Yes, it has arrived! Earlier this month we discussed 3G4, a Nintendo 64 Emulator for the iPhone. Now, just as we thought, Zodttd has just released his version of a Nintendo 64 Emulator, dubbed 'n64iphone'. This is an early release version. Everything is included except save states and landscape screen modes. You can still save games via a memory card / eeprom saves.
Some games are playable, though some are just not up to spec, either due to graphical glitches or performance issues (3GS would be helpful) . To help with performance, a frameskip config file option has been made available, as well as "load ROM" option for disabling sound output which can sometimes help with glitching.
Quote:
It is a port of mupen64plus along with Ari64's ARM Dynarec, and Adventus / Orkin's OpenGLES GPU. Since the graphics processing unit (GPU) code is written with the OpenGL ES 2.0 specification, it limits the devices able to be used to the iPhone 3gs and iPod Touch 3rd Gen as of the current Apple lineup.
Controls work either by onscreen display controls + accelerometer…or…by connecting via BlueTooth a Nintendo WiiMote controls and it’s own accelerometer, just like the nes4iphone release.
So keep an open minded approach, as this is still an early release. You can find it on Cydia today for $2.50 on the ZodTTD repo
Quote:
Features include:
WiiMote support via BlueTooth capable devices!
Fast dynarec CPU emulation!
Sound emulation!
Download to the ROMs directory within the app!
Fast OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics renderer.
Controller overlays are able to be skinned.
Supported ROMs: .n64 .z64
Supported Archives: .zip .7z
Current testings as far as I can tell:
Mario Kart 64 runs real well.
Mario 64 runs real well.
Smash Bros has a graphical glitch where eyes are missing on characters. Perhaps this is due to a bug made in the dynarec porting I did.
Legend Of Zelda - Ocarina Of Time runs a bit too slowly but turning on frameskip should help fix that.
Yup, you heard correct. I am currently working on a port of N64 for the iPhone 3gs and iPod Touch 3rd Gen. Why only these two models? Two reasons:
They’re the fastest Apple handhelds in term of raw CPU performance.
They both have a faster GPU (Graphic Processing Unit) which allows for OpenGL ES 2.0 specifications.

If most developers have the success of gaming app makers Tapulous, it's understandable why the lengthy app approval process is so frustrating to developers - they're primed and ready to make bank.
Tapulous, For example, which has launched popular games for the iPhone and iPod touch, claims that the games in their "Apple games portfolio" are now generating upwards of seven-figures per month.
The UK's Telegraph is out today with coverage of a developer now sitting atop a veritable goldmine with their iPhone gaming app business.
Quote:
Tapulous confirmed that sales across its Apple games portfolio now total around $1 million per month, a figure that highlights the growing popularity of mobile phone "apps", and the increasing significance of the iPhone and iPod touch as a hand-held gaming platform.
Tapulous, which has fewer than two dozen employees, initially raised $2.8 million in private investment capital. Following the well established model found throughout the development community, Tapulous generates revenue through its games in a variety of ways: outright game sales, ad placement, selling content (like music) found within its games, etc. Tapulous, most famous for their popular game "Tap Tap Revenge," thinks it has only now started to hit its stride with millions more to be made from games currently available and those scheduled for future release.
Quote:
The iPhone and iPod touch are expected to be big sellers this Christmas, adding to the 50 million devices already in use globally. Since Apple launched its App Store in July 2008, iPhone and iPod touch users have downloaded more than two billion apps.
The news of Tapulous' success is hard to believe for some who see the crowded field of apps as anything but conducive to concentrated attention from gamers capable of pumping so much money into one developer through app purchases. Even though the App Store now sports better than 100,000 applications less than two years after its launch, that total number is likely to double - or triple - within the next two years.

Good news for those wanting to use a physical Bluetooth keyboard with their iPhones: Now you can. The catch is that you'll need to jailbreak your iPhone and that input doesn't work outside of one particular app at the moment.
Apparently all you need to do is download the driver, Bluetooth Keyboard Driver, through Cydia, install the demo app, and let your keyboard connect with your iPhone. Simple as that. Anyone given this a test run yet?

The WSJ says that CBS and Disney are seriously considering Apple's plan to kill your cable box with iTunes TV show subscriptions. Oh, and that the Apple tablet thing is coming in March.
The WSJ says that Apple's plan for iTunes TV show subscriptions would have you pay a monthly fee for "access to some TV shows from a selection" of major networks, and that CBS and Disney are the two most seriously thinking about it. CBS would apparently offer up shows from both CBS and the CW, like Gossip Girl, while Disney would be offering up shows from ABC, ABC Family and the Disney Channel. What's interesting is that the networks could actually make more money per subscriber than they do from cable companies, with broadcast networks picking up $2-$4 per subscriber, and cable networks grabbing $1-$2. (Which has to piss cable companies off, no doubt why networks are treading carefully around this proposal.) Originally, Apple had floated something more like a traditional cable payment, like paying $30 a month for a big bundle of TV stuff.
All of this, of course, would fit into Apple's larger plan to remake the iTunes model with Lala, and Apple hopes to launch the service sometime next year. While the way Apple says songs and TV shows now would stick around according to the Journal, the combination of web-and-streaming-oriented music and TV subscriptions fundamentally changes the way iTunes would work.
Oh, and of course, this is all happening as Apple "finalizes its plans for a tablet device," Apple's trying to launch "by the end of March." Interesting, that's what an analyst heard not too long ago. Killing cable and up-ending the publishing industry in one fell swoop? That's a pretty busy 2010.

Once again we are seeing Apple approve Apps that we would have never thought possible. Either they are really listening to the developers to cut some slack, or they are all drunk out of their minds, drinking Egg Nog and sipping Cocoa, with the AppStore on autopilot. Either way, I won't complain, although
Nescaline was unleashed upon the App Store today by Jonathan Zdziarski. Nescaline comes with some free games, however as usual, you'll have to add your own roms. However, this is not as easy as just SSH'ing them in. Obviously those that don't have Jailbroken phones can't do so. But the App does have the ability to point to a URL containing a ROM and download it to your device to play as you please.
I could go on to explain the controls, layout and gameplay, but nothing is really different than the version we have available to us in Cydia. So here are some details and some screenies
Note: I only found this in the US Store
UPDATE: It appears that this app has been pulled from the AppStore.
Only a few moments after I posted this, the app is now gone from existence. It's pretty obvious as to why this probably happened, but nonetheless, thats the way it goes. It just makes one wonder what is really going on for the approval process...

The first mobile phone version of the popular web browser Firefox is "days away" from launch, the head of the project has told the BBC.
The browser, codenamed Fennec, will initially be available for Nokia's N900 phone, followed by other handsets.
It is currently going through final testing and could be released before the end of the year, said Jay Sullivan at Mozilla, the group behind Firefox.
The open-source browser will be able to synchronise with the desktop version.
Apple is very restrictive. It doesn't allow other browsers
Jay Sullivan
Mozilla
Software will mean that any web pages open in a user's desktop browser will automatically open in the mobile version.
"At the end of the working day you can walk away from your computer and keep on going on your phone," Mr Sullivan told the BBC.
"It encrypts all of the information and sends it back through the cloud between your desktop and mobile."
He said that providing there were no "show stoppers", the software could be available to download "within the year".
Desktop success
The browser will be available to download from the Mozilla website and then offered in Nokia's Ovi store, so that N900 owners can download the software.
The organisation is also developing versions for Microsoft's Windows mobile and Google's Android operating system.
Internet explorer is still the world's most used desktop browser
However, he said that it would be some time before iPhone users would be able to use the browser.
"Apple is very restrictive." he said. "As it's a pretty closed platform we don't see that happening soon."
Apple only allows browsers based on its Webkit engine, which is used to power its Safari browser, to be loaded on to the iPhone. Firefox uses alternative technology.
When it launches, Fennec will compete with browsers such as Opera, which is the most popular mobile browser according to analytics firm Stats Counter.
Safari, which comes bundled with the iPhone, is the second most popular, whilst Nokia's own browser is third.
The mobile version of Firefox will hope to follow the success of its desktop browser.
Stats Counter has reported that the latest version of the Firefox browser has overtaken Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) as the World's most popular browser with 21.93% of the market, compared with IE7's share of 21.2%.
However, other firms suggest IE still has the lead on Firefox, whilst most agree that the various versions of Explorer combined still dominate the web browser market.
App craze
Fennec has been in development for the last year and a half.
The new software has many of the features of the desktop version, such as tabbed browsing, and an address bar that doubles as a search box.
Opera is currently the most popular web mobile browser
However, the mobile version will also scale pages to fit the device and will support functions such as tapping the screen to zoom in on a page.
Mr Sullivan said it would also be the first mobile browser to have "add-ons", small pieces of software that add functionality to the browser such as news readers or online games. They can also be used to customise the look and feel of the browser.
"Because it is a browser for a mobile device, the add-ons will be different," said Mr Sullivan. "You'll see ones that use geo-location and exploit how the device is tilted."
The add-ons will add functionality to the phone that is currently offered by mobile apps.
These small specialist pieces of software have become increasingly popular.
For example, Apple now offer more than 100,000 apps in its store ranging from games and social networks to news readers and tools that allow people to use sites such as eBay or Amazon on the go.
Blackberry, Google, Nokia, Symbian and Microsoft all offer their own app stores.
However, he said that he did not think that the browser would completely replace these apps.
"They will co-exist," he said.

Silicon Alley Insider has it from a "plugged-in source in the mobile industry" that Apple will demo their tablet in January, and have asked selected iPhone devs to prepare high-res apps for the occasion. So, what exactly is the occasion?
The first possibility—and the one that could put a welcome end to the endless fragments of tablet information that we've been parsing for the last few months (**** that, years)—is that this is some kind of public demo. Apple's iPod and iPhone events have been dominated by apps since the App Store opened, sometime to a fault. If Apple's going to announce this thing, they're going to have app support.
The second possibility—the more likely one—is that this will be a closed demo; that it's some kind of private event to give app developers a heads-up before a public announcement, and presumably to comfort them about app interoperability between the iPhone and the new tablet device. According to SIA's source:
[Apple has] told select developers that as long as they build their apps to support full screen resolution — rather than a fixed 320x480 — their apps should run just fine
Essentially, it sounds like they're asking app devs to write quick'n'dirty fixes to remove specific resolution limits from their apps, so that they can run—though not necessarily gracefully—on a larger screen. That's the kind of thing that could put developers' interoperability fears at rest, but not the kind of thing that Apple would want to show the public.
The source claims the device isn't going on sale until later, which fits nicely with the WSJ's claim of a March release date, which falls roughly in sync with announcement-but-no-product Apple events of the past. Also, the source claims that the entire Apple tablet concept is a sick prank by Steve Jobs, and that he literally hasn't stopped laughing for, like, three whole years.

Information has become available which reveals development is underway for the new iPhone 4, as well as suggestions of features and Apple's plans for the phone. A report on PinchMedia, which made repeated use of the term 'iPhone 4,' was cited on the website MacRumors, though the website admitted that such reports can often be forged. The report also made allusions to a 'Corporate Event' planned for June 28th — July 2nd 2010, which have been taken as referring to the next WWDC."
A related rumor holds that Apple has ordered 40-45 million 5-megapixel cameras, which might hint at new functionality.

Jeff] and his team completed this iPhone controlled rocket launcher as part of their final project at Georgia Tech. Two servos provide the rotation referenced by an onboard electronic compass, and elevation control for launch. These are interfaced with an eBox 2300 using a few Phidgets boards.
Check out the launch video below. It’s too bad that they went with a commercial solution for servo control rather than building it themselves (especially considering it is an embedded systems class). But it is a nice build none the less. Now they need to add some imaging equipment to the rockets and they’ll be in business.

The wait has been long, but now there's finally a means by which to connect your dear, yet almost buttonless, iPhone or iPod touch to a Bluetooth keyboard for some more intense finger tapping action. The project that delivered us this teasing video back in February has at long last reached the application stage, where simple commoners like us can use it to synergize our gear -- provided we've had the wherewithal to free it from Cupertino's overbearing clutches first. The BTstack Keyboard app is now available in exchange for $5 at the Cydia store, so if you want to be the first to write a bestseller on his or her iDevice, there's no time like the present.
Update: We've done the inevitable and had a quick play with the app ourselves. Pairing our iPhone and keyboard was a veritable cinch, and we were met by delightfully rapid responsiveness throughout, whether using it in Safari, composing text missives, or jotting those novella notes down. You should note that command, cut, copy, paste, and highlighting functions are not yet active, and then hurry along past the break to see a video demo.

We don't know where this is coming from so take it with a grain of salt, but rumor has it from AndroidSPIN that the progenitor Android device, the T-Mobile G1, is destined to officially get an over-the-air update for an Eclair build, Android 2-point-something. It's not specified which version -- whether it's 2.0 or the Nexus One-tastic 2.1 -- will be coming out, but if we had our say, always shoot for the latest and greatest. Hey T-Mo, we know the holidays are pretty much over, but could you validate these whispers for us? Thanks!

The Apple tablet rumors are at a fever pitch, yet again. Depending on what you've read, it's all but confirmed that the company's got a January 26th event scheduled at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA) in San Francisco, CA. All this, of course, with nary a word or comment from Cupertino HQ, and without the context that this trend has come and gone ad nauseam, both with the tablet and before with the years of lead-up to the iPhone. Here's the latest bit: MacRumors has dug up information about a Delaware-based company, Slate Computing, LLC, that was founded in November 2006 and owns the trademark "iSlate," the signatory of said trademark being Apple's Senior Trademark Specialist Regina Porter. Given that Apple owns "iSlate" trademark in Europe and that it's allegedly pulled similar stunts with a "fake" company and the iPhone trademark, sure, we could buy into this being just a dummy corporation... but does it really confirm an impending tablet that'll be called the "iSlate?" Not at all. We wouldn't be surprised if Apple has done this for numerous other trademarks, either to give itself more options or to prevent others from trying to manufacture products under those names. (Slate Computing, LLC also happens to own the "Magic Slate" trademark, just so you know.) Also bought up in 2006? The domain iSlate.com, which again according to MacRumors (with help form Mark Gurman of AppleRejectedMe.com) was apparently and briefly shown to be owned by Apple at some point during 2007. Food for thought, but trust us, you don't want to confuse hearsay for concrete fact.
Which brings us to December 24th, where we see a statistically significant uptick in Apple's stock value. Seeing as the fiscals were released back in late October along with the last refresh of hardware (Mac Pro specs notwithstanding), it seems everyone decided to spend their holiday bonuses on some Apple shares. Now, we're not claiming to be professionals here by any stretch of the imagination, but it seems a lot of the activity here can be attributed to the recent flux of rumors. Jason Schwarz of The Street has an interesting take on it, which if you've got 15 minutes to kill should be worth your time to browse through.

The iPod touch is Apple's not-so-secret weapon when it comes to the App Store, especially come Christmas. This year was no exception, according to stats released by Flurry.
The company says that over Christmas, downloads from iPod touches 'eclipsed' iPhone downloads by 172% - and that downloads from third-generation iPod touches jumped by 900% on Christmas Day itself, compared to the average of previous Fridays in December.
Meanwhile, Flurry says December was a record-breaking month for the App Store, with downloads increasing by more than 50% compared to November based on average daily download figures.
The company also tracked Android Market over Christmas, revealing that downloads from the Motorola Droid jumped 93% on Christmas Day compared to previous Fridays in December.
However, Droid now accounts for nearly half - 48% - of all downloads from the leading Android handsets - which Flurry says includes Droid, myTouch 3G, G1 and the HTC Hero.
Still, Google has some way to go - Flurry claims download volumes on the App Store are still more than 13 times greater than on Android Market.

[Dennis] got snowed in after the biggest storm in the history of the state hit. Like any good hacker he didn’t let the time go to waste. He decided to dig out his Neo Freerunner to give it a decent battery and a new OS.
The original battery for the Freerunner has a controller board integrated into the package. [Dennis] pulled out the board and attached it to a portable DVD player battery. After running it through a discharge cycle with another hack of his, the board learned the new battery capacity. The larger battery plus a fast-charger from SparkFun required a larger case. He made it happen by combining a 2.5″ HDD case with the original body courtesy of some JB weld. The final portion of the hack was to load up Android which is as simple as untarring the package onto an SD card.
It’s a bit big, but the battery will last and he’s got an open platform. Nice work!

In a note to investors, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster asserted that Apple could sell 1.4 million tablets in 2010... if they priced it at $600 US. The tablet is not even announced yet, let alone its selling price, but Munster has been consistent in calling for a price range of $500 to $700 for the device that AppleInsider calls a "Kindle Killer."
Looking at his sources in the Taiwan supply chain, Munster estimated that Apple could sell 162,000 of the devices each month, pushing out about 2 million every year.

Vodafone says it will start selling the iPhone in the UK on 14 January 2010.
It is the latest of the UK's major phone networks to offer the iPhone to customers.
The cheapest tariff available is £30 a month for 24 months, plus additional handset charges ranging from £59 (iPhone 3G 8GB) to £239 (3GS 32GB).
Both business and consumer contracts are subject to a 1GB monthly data limit on mobile internet use. Orange has a "fair use" limit of 750MB per month.
Vodafone and O2 both offer unlimited wifi use. Orange's data limit includes connections to the internet via BT Open-Zone wifi.
Both O2's and Orange's lowest tariffs - £34.26 and £29.36 respectively - are on a 24-month contract and come with a free iPhone.
Vodafone comes close with a £35 a month contract over a two year period, also including a free 3G 8GB handset.
Tesco Mobile tariffs start at £20 a month for 12 months - with a £222 charge for the same model of handset. However, Tesco says that the shorter contract will enable customers to upgrade more quickly.
Guy Laurence, chief executive of Vodafone UK, said that the company had been preparing its network for over a year to handle the introduction of the iPhone.
There are concerns that mobile networks globally are struggling to cope with demand as more consumers choose internet-enabled smartphones and mobile dongles over fixed broadband deals.
Vodafone has also introduced a charge for customers wishing to use their iPhones as a modem - starting at £5 to download 500 MB.

Android and iPhone users show similar usage patterns when it comes to their use of the mobile web and mobile applications, according to eMarketer.
Basing its research on figures from ComScore, it shows that 94% of iPhone users access mobile media, compared to 92% of Android users.
For news and information browsing, both platforms score 80%, while 83% of iPhone owners use apps, compared to 82% of Android users.
By contrast, only 59% of other smartphone owners use apps, although 80% access mobile media and 65% browse for news and information.
Meanwhile, Compete has been tracking usage of apps on both platforms versus the web browser, reporting that 52% of iPhone users spend most of their time using apps - the comparable percentage for Android users is 35%.
"Applications have been vital to the iPhone’s success and Android devices are proving to be no different thus far," says Compete's Elaine Sanfilippo.

Look, let's not beat around the bushes -- Verizon Wireless will one day stock Palm's Pre. It's a rather well documented fact, and at this point the only real question is "when?" Judging by a mysterious Wi-Fi Certificate that just popped up, we're beginning to think that the waiting period is nearly up, and with CES 2010 happening in a week, there's hardly a better time for us to really start believing. If you'll recall, Sprint's Pre snagged a Wi-Fi Certificate number of P100EWW, and just this summer we spotted a few leaked Palm devices within VZW documents with "P101" and "P121" monikers; lo and behold, the certificate for this elusive dual-mode (WiFi and cellular) smartphone boasts a P101EWW label. We aren't trying to read too deeply between the lines or anything, but if this isn't a Pre destined for Big Red, we're eager to know what kind of new mobile Palm has lined up for its presser at CES.

While Palm's Pre is many things to many people it still can't game. Oh sure, it'll play Magic Fortune Ball like a champ but when it comes to intensive 3D action the Pre is as helpless as a would-be terrorist trying to ignite his underwear. See, webOS and the Mojo SDK currently can't exploit the GPU the way other smartphone platforms can. Rewind a few weeks, however, and we're reminded of a video showing EA's Need for Speed Undercover running impossibly smooth on a Pre. At the time, the video and claims of the device running Flash were shot down as fake largely due to the accompanying screen caps of the purportedly new App Catalog. Well guess what? Those screen caps were vindicated today with the webOS 1.3.5 update that just so happened to launch a new App Catalog matching the leaked images, exactly. That lends credence to the video then doesn't it, while hinting at future apps and games with full OpenGL graphics support. Is that the big reveal at CES alongside enhanced Pre+ and Pixi+ handsets headed to Big Red? We'll find out shortly enough -- until then check the gameplay after the break.

Today around 12:05 EST there was a Packages file distributed via macciti/zodttd's source that causes cydia to not launch properly. The issue is well known and a solution is being worked out. Please do not panic/overreact and restore. Again, DO NOT restore your device.
More Information:
Quote:
The issue was caused by a unicode character used in zodttd's packages file. This character brought out a bug in cydia which caused it to not launch. (a similar problem was created in the past when another community source missed a line break between entries.) This is not the fault of anyone at macciti or zodttd this is simply a bug in cydia.
Fix:
This is a simple fix really.
Connect to your iphone/ipod via either ssh, mobile terminal, ifile, diskaid or some other type of usb file system browser. Browse to /var/lib/apt/lists/
Delete cydia.zodttd-1.com_repo_cydia_dists_stable_main_binary-iphoneos-arm_Packages.
Install the new update to cydia to fix this.
IF you have apt7 installed you should be able to just run the following:
Code:
apt-get update

Apple CEO Steve Jobs won over 30% of the vote in an online poll published by personal finance and investing news site SmartMoney.com, enough to earn their "Person of the Decade" title by a solid margin over luminaries such as Warren Buffett (17%), Ben Bernanke (13%) and Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page (12%). From the article, 'Certainly, Jobs accomplished more than probably any other CEO since he returned to Apple in the late 1990s: Not only did he revive sales at the failing computer company, he led the stock to a more than 700% increase in value, and forever changed the way people buy and listen to music

Well well. Look at this. Taking a page from the CES-challenging Apple / Macworld playbook, Google has announced a press event on January 5th (just like we told you) in Mountain View, stating:
With the launch of the first Android-powered device just over a year ago, we've seen how a powerful, open platform can spur mobile product innovation. And this is just the beginning of what's possible.
Please join us in Mountain View on January 5, for an Android press gathering.
If this lines up with the news we've seen recently, it's likely a Nexus One announcement will be the order of the day, and most (if not all) of your nagging questions will get answered. You know we'll be there live... so hang on to your hats, and mark down the date!

It looks as if Duke Nukem isn't completely 'nuked' after all. Someone has ported the 90s classic on to a Nokia N900. As you'll see in the video, you control Duke using the Qwerty keypad and shoot using the touchscreen. I'm wondering how long it will take for this to get on other mobile platforms."
In other Duke news, reader Jupix points out that 3D Realms' CEO Scott Miller recently said, "There are numerous other Duke games in various stages of development, several due out this year. We are definitely looking to bring Duke into casual gaming spaces, plus there are other major Duke games in production.

Microsoft is planning to ramp up its mobile gaming activities, tying Windows Mobile into its Xbox Live community.
At least, that's what it says it's doing in a job advert for a Principal Program Manager - LIVE Engagement Job, which was uncovered by MobileTechWorld:
"We’re connecting players via the LIVE services on new devices beyond the console," says the ad.
"We need a Principle Program Manager who can help drive the platform and bring Xbox LIVE enabled games to Windows Mobile. This person will focus specifically on what makes gaming experiences “LIVE Enabled” through aspects such as avatar integration, social interactions, and multi-screen experiences."
Microsoft is also recruiting a Software Test Engineer with an equally bullish ad that asks "Do you think mobile gaming and always connected internet has the potential to change the way people play games? If so then the Mobile Entertainment is where you need to be."
Windows Mobile has been regularly written off this year in the face of competition from iPhone, Android, BlackBerry and other smartphone platforms.
However, a strong tie-in with Xbox could be just what's needed to revitalise WinMo. Well, for gamers at least.
That said, Microsoft has been trying to take Xbox Live mobile for several years now through its Live Anywhere initiative. The job postings indicate that it might finally happen in 2010.

We've alluded to this a couple times already, but Boy Genius Report is coming out today and saying that Verizon's webOS launch devices early next year will indeed be called the "Pre Plus" and "Pixi Plus." We're able to independently confirm that this is the intel out in the field right now -- so unless Big Red calls an audible, these are the names you should be keeping an eye on as you're scanning the shelves. The report goes on to say that Verizon's models are the same size as Sprint's, but as we've already seen in the FCC, these new versions are going to be supercharged in one way or another -- at the very least, the Pixi should have WiFi on board, a welcome boost. Any way you slice it, it sure looks like Sprint got the short end of this stick, doesn't it?

ure, OnLive has already done live demos of its "cloud gaming" service, but it never hurts to get another comprehensive 48-minute video on the subject. In a presentation at Columbia University, CEO Steve Perlman goes over the nitty gritty of how game streaming works, the OnLive user interface (11:53), an inevitable Crysis Wars demo (16:35), Brag Clips (17:49), and of course the iPhone app (19:31). Though cellphone integration is still limited to primarily spectating and social networking functions, PCs and Macs can get gaming via a 1MB browser plugin, or you can grab the microconsole streaming box for your TV, which Steve suggests might be given away for free with OnLive subscriptions. If you have any more unaswered questions, check out the audience Q&A at 33:14, and the full vid awaits after the break.

Apple is planning a "big" media event in late January, according to Fox News.
Its sources back up last week's claim by the Financial Times of a 26th January event at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco.
What's more, Fox News claims that the event will definitely "focus on the mobility space", which it takes as a clear indication of the imminent unveiling of Apple's tablet device - which other recent reports suggest will be called iSlate.
It's all still rumour and speculation, of course. Apple hasn't sent out invites for any event, nor has it ever confirmed publicly that it's even working on a tablet.
That hasn't stopped analysts making their predictions for the device's price and likely sales volume, even if they can't quite agree on the figures.
Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster thinks the iSlate will cost around $600, and may sell 1.4 million units in 2010.
"We expect the tablet to be driven by a new version of Apple’s iPhone OS that runs a new category of larger apps alongside all the current apps from the App Store," he wrote in a research note.
However, Macquarie analyst Phil Cusick has penned his own research note suggesting that the tablet will sell for around $800, and may sell between three and five million units in 2010.

Everyone remembers that story about how a bunch of people were suing Apple for potential iPod-induced hearing loss, even though they hadn't lost any hearing. It got shot down last year, appealed, and today, killed for good. CRANK IT.
The case was a bit odd from the start, in that it hinged on the potential for hearing loss, rather than actual, inflicted hearing loss. It was also odd beacuse iPods, which are evidently capable of pumping out about 125dB of sound through a pair of those crappy white earbuds, already have a volume-limiting function. This is in addition to normal volume controls, which apparently don't provide enough guidance to users to prevent them from techno-blasting their eardrums into mucousy, deaf meat-nuggets. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a lower court's decision from last year that iPod could be, and generally are, used safely, and dismissed the lawsuit.
But as my grandfather always used to say, at the center of every frivolous class action technology lawsuit, there lies a grain of truth: iPods and iPhones, if you turn them up too loud, can damage your hearing. So don't, k?

Seems like Apple is not giving up on alternative control methods: They have just updated their March Wiimote-like controller patent, so that means they may still working on it. Or maybe not.

A remote wand for controlling the operations of a media system is provided. The wand may be operative to control the movement of a cursor displayed on screen by the position and orientation at which the wand is held. As the user moves the wand, the on-screen cursor may move. The user may use the wand to control a plurality of operations and applications that may be available from the media system, including for example zoom operations, a keyboard application, an image application, an illustration application, and a media application.
I wish they fixed Apple TV instead, so it could play any media, and not only iTunes-branded stuff. Actually, if I were Apple, I will forget about wands and license Microsoft Natal to integrate it in all their computers, especially the iMac.

A report on AnandTech shows a brief video of the tech running Unreal Tournament on an Apple mobile (embedded below), and says Epic is preparing to name a number of other mobile platforms the tech will work with at CES in January.
The demo's modified version of UT uses a virtual on-screen joystick and tilt controls.
Of course, UE3 is a famously powerful engine - and requires sufficient hardware support to boot, so the engine only works on iPhone 3GS given its support for OpenGL ES 2.0, which standard 2G and 3G plus older iPod Touches don't feature.
The AndandTech report says that Epic isn't offering licences for the mobile version - yet. Instead the firm is demoing its new innovations to show how it is forging ahead with new platforms, ideas and technology.
But the iPhone version will eventually see the light of day - so in theory UE users can start toying with ideas now and in future port them over to the mobile version.
The report suggests, however that the mobile version won't be available to those entry-level Unreal users that access the UDK, it will only be available to fully paid-up licensees.

nottheusualsuspect excerpts from this speculation-laden report at Brighthand that
"Motorola is reportedly working on a device that will have one of the largest displays of any smartphone. Code-named the Shadow, it will sport a 4.3-inch WVGA+ touchscreen, Google's Android OS, and a range of other high-end features. When it comes to screen size, the Shadow will be equaled only by the Windows Mobile-based HTC HD2. The closest Android-powered model will be the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, which will sport a 4.0-inch display. Most other models, like the Motorola Droid and Google Nexus One, have 3.7-inch screens. The display on this upcoming Motorola smartphone will allegedly have a resolution of 850 by 484 pixels.
