An iPhone bug already seen when Australia switched between Daylight Savings Time and Standard Time a few weeks ago has now hit Europe. Twitter is alight with reports of recurring iPhone alarms going off an hour later than usual. So even though the iOS clock changed correctly over the weekend, the alarm did not. Thing is, according to a ZDNet Australia report from more than three weeks ago, Apple acknowledged the bug with a promise to fix it with a software update. So why wasn't it rolled out in time to avoid this mess in Europe? Let's see if Apple fixes it before North America makes the switch on November 7th, otherwise, you've been warned.
Update: The fix appears to be as simple as removing and re-adding the alarms. Your boss will be thrilled by the news.

Tokyo-based research firm, MMRI said 2.23 million smartphones (Android/Windows Mobile/Blackberry/iOS/Palm) were sold in Japan between April and September this year.
Of these, 1.34 million were iPhones.
Impressive eh?
Well, sort of. Japan has traditionally been tricky for Western consumer electronics giants to crack. In this sense Apple has done well.
But the fact is, most Japanese don't own smartphones, and the market remains in thrall to local OEMs like Sharp (22.7 per cent) and Fujitsu (14.9 per cent).
That said, there are signs that the smartphone bug is building gradually. The 2.23m total is more than double the April and September 2009 total of 1.06 million.

Voice Fantasy creates new characters based on an analysis of a user’s voice
Final Fantasy publisher Square Enix has released a brand new voice-controlled RPG for the iPhone 3G/3GS/4, iPad and latest iterations of the iPod Touch.
Called Voice Fantasy, the game allows users to summon monsters simply by speaking into the device or using the recorded voices of your friends. Characters are generated from data collected from voice analysis.
Furthermore, the publisher has said that “a series of famous characters from the most popular and highly-regarded Square Enix titles are scheduled to become available for battling soonâ€.
Voice Fantasy is available to download from the App Store now for £1.79.

Google's Android OS took a 44% share of all new smartphones bought in the US last quarter, according to research from both NPD Group and Canalys.
NPD's stats show that Android's runaway success is hurting Research In Motion's BlackBerry OS more than iPhone, however.
In Q2, the research firm had Android in the lead with 33%, followed by BlackBerry with 28% and iPhone with 22%.
In Q3, it claims Android increased to 44%, and BlackBerry fell to 22%, allowing iPhone to overtake it by increasing its market share to 23%.
"Much of Android’s quarterly share growth came at the expense of RIM, rather than Apple," says NPD's Ross Rubin.
"The HTC EVO 4G, Motorola Droid X, and other new high-end Android devices have been gaining momentum at carriers that traditionally have been strong RIM distributors, and the recent introduction of the BlackBerry Torch has done little to stem the tide."
iPhone 4 was the most popular handset sold in the US in Q3, according to NPD - that's out of all phones, not just smartphones - followed by the BlackBerry Curve 8500 series, LG Cosmos, Motorola Droid X and HTC EVO 4G.
Canalys US smartphone market share figures for Q3 back up NPD's conclusions, although the exact details vary - these are based on shipments rather than sales.
It pegs Android's Q3 shipments in the US at 9.1 million, giving it a 43.6% market share. It's followed by iPhone (5.5 million - 26.2%) and BlackBerry (5.1 million - 24.2%).
Fourth-placed Windows Mobile is a long way behind with 0.6 million shipments and a 3% market share.

There's always been tension between Apple's tight control of the iOS App Store and the DRM-free license requirements of the GPL, and it seems like things are coming to a head over VLC, the open-source video player. As you'll recall, VLC was just released for the iPad and iPhone in the past few months, but the port was done by a company called Applidium -- not VLC developer VideoLAN, which holds the copyright and licenses the code under the GPL. VideoLAN now says that since VLC for iOS includes Apple's FairPlay DRM, it's in violation of the GPL and must be pulled -- and that "concerned users are advised to look for applications on more open mobile platforms for the time being." That's certainly fair enough, although we do find it a bit sensationalist that the takedown notice was sent to Apple and not Applidium, since it's technically Applidium that violated the GPL. Then again, the statement was written by VideoLAN developer Rémi Deni-Courmont, who is also senior MeeGo software engineer, so we can see why he'd be interested in promoting a "more open" project. Whatever the case, it doesn't seem like VLC for iOS is not long for this world -- you'd best go grab it as quickly as possible. Like, now.

As with all patent applications, it's a bit early to get too excited about this one, but a recently published filing from Apple dubbed "Nitriding Stainless Steel for Consumer Electronic Products" is one of the more interesting we've seen from the company as of late, especially when you consider its recent acquisition of Liquidmetal's intellectual property. Whereas Liquidmetal promises to let Apple create metal devices that are stronger and not limited to the usual structural or strength limitations found in conventional metals, this new patent application suggests that the company might also be working on a nitride coating for stainless steel that's described as "both scratch and impact resistant." What's more, the application suggests that the coating would not affect the appearance of the underlying stainless steel, and not cause any RF interference either. As pointed out in the application itself, that means it could be used on laptops, portable media players and, yes, even cellphones -- or it could simply be filed away with the countless other applications that haven't seen the light of day. Here's hoping for the former.

We've talked before about Apple's plans to turn future iDevices into electronic wallets, allowing you to wave your phone over a reader to pay for things. Now, there's an unsourced report claiming that Apple has a much more "revolutionary" goal: putting your entire desktop on your phone so that any Mac can become your Mac.
Leander Kahney at Cult of Mac shared the interesting revelations from a source that asks to be anonymous in a report today entitled "iPhone 5 Will Enable Ambitious Remote Computing Program." According to the source, the iPhone 5 will allow a user to "carry a lot of their desktop data and settings with them

Microsoft may have missed out on being the first to stream Netflix in 1080p with surround sound, but it's still improving access to the service with a new app for Windows Phone 7 arriving on the same day a dashboard update brings Watch Instantly access to Xbox 360-owning Canadians. The free app should be easily found in the Marketplace Video Store, but just in case you don't have an HTC Surround or similar device in your immediate vicinity check out this demo from March embedded after the break.

US social mobile gaming firm Aurora Feint says its OpenFeint platform is launching in a third wave of Android games this week.
Titles include PikPok's Flick Kick Football, ustwo's Dot 3, Distinctive Developments' Bonecruncher Soccer, and CrowdStar's Happy Island.
Existing developers seem happy with the impact OpenFeint has been having on Android since making the leap from iPhone, too.
Indie developer HyperBees claims that its Speedx 3D game saw a 39% increase in sales after adding OpenFeint.
Aurora Feint is hoping to boost the social effect with an update to its Android platform with Facebook Connect, so users can see what games their friends are playing.
"We’re seeing incredible growth on Android for new games and existing Android games relaunching with OpenFeint," says VP of marketing and developer relations Eros Resmini.
"With Facebook Connect coming soon more and more players will discover the Feint gaming network. Developers clearly love the Feint gaming network - we’re already in 80 games and are adding new games every day."

Middleware firm Stonetrip has released a major new version of its multi-platform ShiVa3D engine, which most notably includes a unified authoring tool designed to port games to multiple platforms at once.
New plugins for the tool include PhysX, the Fmod sound library and ARToolkt, while ShiVa3D now also allows its users to code directly in either C, C++, Cocoa and Objective-C. It can additionally convert Lua to C++ to boost script performance.
The SDK includes a device input simulator for iPhone, iPad, Android and Palm, allowing those devices to communicate directly with the ShiVa editor.
"This ShiVa3D upgrade brings in some amazing new capabilities – the Unified Authoring Tool on its own, for example, makes creating games across desktop, console and mobile platforms a smooth, efficient, one-stop process," claimed Philip Belhassen, CEO of Stonetrip.
"Many of the new features are in direct response to feedback and consultation with our existing users. Others have been developed and introduced as part of our desire to make ShiVa3D 1.9 the most technologically advanced, most innovative, most reliable and most efficient 3D engine on the market today."
The upgrade is available for free (downloaded via the application itself) to ShiVa's 30,000 existing users, with a variety of licenses (including a royalty-free, multi-platform option) available to newcomers.

An analysis of Google Android Froyo's open source kernel has uncovered 88 critical flaws that could expose users' personal information. An analysis of the kernel used in Google's Android smartphone software has turned up 88 high-risk security flaws that could be used to expose users' personal information, security firm Coverity said in a report published on Tuesday. The results, published in the 2010 edition of the Coverity Scan Open Source Integrity Report, are based on an analysis of the Froyo kernel used in HTC's Droid Incredible handset. ... While Android implementations vary from device to device, Coverity said the same flaws were likely to exist in other handsets as well. Coverity uncovered a total of 359 bugs, about one-quarter of which were classified as high-risk.

Whether called the Pre 2 or Pre Plus 2, there's no denying that the first webOS 2.0 device is coming at us in a fast and furious fashion. Verizon docs already revealed it was on that carrier's November roadmap, and now HP's Facebook page for students has narrowed pre-order availability down to a specific date: November 8th. That's next Monday, folks! No more info is available at this time, such as whether that will include the promised unlocked GSM Pre 2s or whether they would be forthcoming at a later date. Either way, we're excited to see this 1GHz vessel sail in and bring us all that improved webOS goodness.

Don't count the Symbian Foundation out just yet, because the European Commission has emerged like a knight in shining armor thanks to a €22 million public / private joint investment and a new consortium of some 24 organizations awkwardly called SYMBEOSE: "Symbian – the Embedded Operating System for Europe." Needless to say, it seems like some of the higher-ups across the continent are feeling a little emotional about the hometown platform -- especially now that it's starting to take a lot of heat -- and have thrown some skin in the game to keep things interesting. For its part, the Foundation says that the initiative (and presumably the money) will go toward developing "new core platform capabilities," exploring cloud computing, and broadening the platform's hardware ecosystem, among other things. Oh, and new Air Jordans would be nice. For Christmas, maybe.

Epic believes that it could be possible to put a game the size of Gears of War on the iPhone in as little as two years time.
Donald Mustard, creative director at Epic subsidiary Chair Entertainment, is currently developing the just-announced Infinity Blade for the iPhone – the first mobile game to run off the Unreal Engine. Like many gamers, he was reluctant to see Apple's smartphone as a proper gaming machine. Not any more.
"I didn't take it that seriously until we started making this game," he explained. "Now I'm like, 'Oh my goodness, this is literally going to be the best looking handheld game ever made'. It's way beyond what a DS or PSP could do.
"I think it's going to be an interesting future, especially if in two years we can really run Gears of War on an iPhone."
He's not far wrong. Have a look at the gallery below – Infinity Blade looks incredible.
Technical director Geremy Mustard then chimed in, "If not two years, then certainly five years. Well, it could be as soon as two years but within five years that will certainly be the case. It will at least be powerful enough to do that.
"Whether it'll be viable from a gaming standpoint that's a different question. Can I look at a little screen for two hours at a time and play a game steadily?"
Donald continued, "We've just been blown away by the amount of graphical power that we can be pushing through these tiny little devices that are in all our pockets.
"That's one of the reasons why Epic are so interested in getting their engine onto these devices. Projecting out three or four years into the future, if the current trends stay true, these devices are going to be just as powerful as the Xbox 360. We'll have a truly powerful console just sitting in all of our pockets.
"If that's the case, there's going be a lot more high-end games on the iPhone. We're just on the cusp of that. It's exciting.
Donald went on to reveal that Epic has had huge interest from other developers over licensing the Unreal Engine for iPhone development since the reveal of the Epic Citadel tech demo last month, both for original IPs and for porting existing titles.
NOA's Reggie Fils-Aime's recent remark that he sees Apple as Nintendo's main rival suddenly seems rather prescient, especially taking into account Epic VP Mark Rein's claim that the 3DS is not powerful enough to handle the Unreal Engine.
"What is that going to mean for gaming?" Donald adds regarding the increasing power of the iPhone. "Am I going to be able to be able to play Red Dead Redemption on it then press pause, put it down in front of my TV and plug in an HDMI cable and keep going?
"There's such a cool future there. It's an interesting time to be a consumer right now and to be a developer."

The iPad's ticket to multitasking freedom -- better known as iOS 4.2 -- has moves past the beta phase and onto GM, which means retail units should be seeing it soon. Besides the iPad, Apple is also providing builds for the second, third, and fourth generations of the iPod touch, along with the iPhone 3G, 3GS, and 4... so if you've got a friend with an iPhone Developer Program subscription, now would be a great time to get cozy.
Update: Apple made some last minute tweaks that give fast access to brightness, volume, and AirPlay controls right in the multitasking bar (pictured after the break). Apple's also on the verge of allowing MobileMe service logins using an Apple ID.

Hello, my name is Justin McElroy, and I play a character called "Justin McElroy" on the popular Joystiq web site and podcast. I hope you'll indulge me for a second as I regale you with a story of my misspent youth. When I was growing up, I was always transfixed by FMV games. I begged and pleaded for a Sega CD, I've finished Dracula Unleashed more times than I care to admit ... hell, I own two copies of Wirehead. To this day, I don't understand the draw of these oft-clunky classics, but it's nothing I can escape or reason away. Before I'd reached my 15th birthday, I swore to friends, family, anyone who would listen that I would one day be the "world's greatest FMV gaming journalist."
You, with the privilege of a dozen years of insight on my younger self, know how this story ends. FMV games have, for reasons beyond me, fallen by the wayside. You now know that the deviant, cretinous masses would prefer to see digital puppets dance on a screen than real humans -- their brethren -- leading out real, interactive drama in front of real, low-quality cameras.
But today, if only for a moment, I have managed to wash the bitter flavor of unfulfilled dreams from my palate. For today, I have written a post about The 7th Guest on iPhone, and I'm following it up with this:
An HD version of Dragon's Lair is now on iPad. It costs five dollars.
That's two FMV posts ... in a row. Maybe a drop in the bucket to 15-year-old Justin, who dreamed of visiting the set of Sewer Shark 3 and sitting down to heartfelt, career-spanning interviews with Rusty Dillen. But today, for nearly 30-year-old Justin, it's enough.
God bless.

The iPhone version of mobile browser Skyfire has gone live on the App Store a day earlier than expected, following its approval by Apple.
Reports had suggested that the app would be available on Thursday, but it's live in Apple's store right now.
The browser's approval and release is significant, because it claims to be the first iPhone browser capable of showing Flash videos on websites.
Skyfire's technology transcodes the videos into the H.264 codec, to make them viewable on the Flash-averse iPhone.
Another interesting point is that the browser is a paid app for iPhone, costing $2.99 / £1.79 in the App Store.
It joins Opera Mini on Apple's Store as a standalone non-Safari browser for iOS users.

Epic Games and ChAIR Entertainment have officially named their Unreal 3 Engine project for iOS devices as Infinity Blade, and set a release date of holiday season 2010.
The game will feature the same technology used in the two companies' free demo, Epic Citadel, which was the first app to utilise Unreal Engine 3 technology on an iOS device.
"More than one million people have been introduced to the world of 'Infinity Blade' through our free app, 'Epic Citadel,' and soon everyone will be able to play our first fully featured game for iOS devices," said Epic president Mike Capps.
"With 'Infinity Blade,' ChAIR has created an amazing looking, incredibly fun game that really demonstrates the potential of triple-A mobile gaming."
The game will launch on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch with a single player mode featuring action-based sword fighting and RPG aspects, but Epic has announced that free updates will bring multiplayer modes and Game Center support.

Microsoft has outlined how it might use the little publicized 'kill switch' in Windows Phone 7 handsets. 'We don't really talk about it publicly because the focus is on testing of apps to make sure they're okay, but in the rare event that we need to, we have the tools to take action,' said Todd Biggs, director of product management for Windows Phone Marketplace. According to Biggs, Microsoft's strict testing of apps when they are submitted for inclusion in Marketplace should minimize kill switch use, but he explained how the company could remove apps from the marketplace or phones, when devices check-in to the system. 'We could unpublish it from the catalog so that it was no longer available, but if it was very rogue then we could remove applications from handsets - we don't want things to go that far, but we could.

While the HTML5 and Flash standard debate rages, Apple, a major promoter of HTML5, has allowed its iOS devices to run Flash videos. Apple has given approval to an app developed by Skyfire that translates Flash code into HTML5. According to CNN, when a user clicks on a Flash video the Skyfire app downloads the Flash video on Skyfire's server where the video is decoded and then encoded in HTML5 and is delivered to an iOS device. The app is embedded in the Safari browser.

It's not just Facebook for Android that's getting an update today -- Twitter just pushed out a new version of its Android app, and while it doesn't add a ton of new features, it's gotten a big speed boost and some polish. The biggest addition is pull-to-refresh, which the iPhone client has had for a while, as an option bar that's revealed by swiping on a tweet. There's also new quoting options for retweets and avatar photos are now high-res, which is nice. We just tried it out and it is indeed faster, which is nice, but we noticed that avatars don't load in right away while you scroll -- they're generic until you stop. Just a minor niggle, and you've no reason not to upgrade -- it's free, after all. Hit market or scan the QR code after the break.
P.S.- Hmm, a big Twitter app update on the same day as a Facebook event? That timing feels like a little more than a coincidence to us, especially since Facebook is gunning hard for location-based check-ins, which is traditionally Twitter's domain. Dare we say that this relationship is complicated?

Sure, showing an image and boasting wildly is one thing, but it's another thing entirely to see something as outlandish as this functioning on video. The gurus behind the Table Connect for iPhone have returned, using a jailbroken iPhone, a dedicated app (for now) and a freshly washed hand to demonstrate what iOS looks like on a 58-inch multitouch table. We've got to say -- for early software, it sure is snappy. Of course, practicality is still in question, but who ever cared about that? Head on past the break and mash play.

Facebook admitted during its mobile event today that the app for Android devices has been lagging behind other clients and has already made a push to correct that with a new version, 1.4, now available on the Android Market. Not much has changed, but the list of fixes indicates it now supports check-ins with Places, Groups and some much needed improvements to notifications. Check out the gallery for a few screens of the new functions in action or snag the QR code after the break.

Rumors have circulated for some time that Apple will increase the length of music previews. In a letter sent to music label representatives, Apple has stated that they will now increase song previews to 90-seconds for songs longer than 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Shorter songs will still have 30-second previews. No time frame has been given yet, but the fact that Apple is informing label representatives indicates that the change may be sooner rather than later.
Apple has a history of playing hardball with the record labels, and they are doing it again. Apple did not ask the record labels if they could change the terms of the Digital Music Download Sales Agreement, they just informed the labels in the letter.
The extended previews feature, expected to be announced at the annual Apple event in September, failed to materialize. One possible explanation for the delay is that Apple may not have had all of the necessary licensing agreements in place

Apple has solidified its early lead in the tablet sales war, increasing its market share in tablet computers to an overwhelming 95%, according to new sales data from market research firm Strategy Analytics. "The tablet wars are up and running," said Neil Mawston, Director of Strategy Analytics. Apple is protecting its early lead with a new ad touting the iPad as "full-size" as compared to the current crop of challengers that all have 7-inch screens.
Overall sales of tablet computers shot up 26% over the last quarter for a total of 4.4 million sold, Strategy Analytics found. 4.19 million of those were iPads, making up 95.5% of the total. At the same time, the number of tablets running the Android operating system went from 2.9 percent to 2.3

Facebook's mobile event today may not have had the revelations many were expecting, but CEO Mark Zuckerberg did drop a bomb of sorts in the Q&A at the end. Responding to a question about a possible Facebook iPad app, Zuckerberg shot back by saying that "the iPad's not mobile... it's a computer." Of course, he did quickly clarify that he didn't mean to be rude to Apple, and added that "we all love Apple products," the iPad just "isn't mobile in the same way."

Although musicians were quick to pick up on the iPad's possibilities as a control surface, the audio production corner of the App Store is still overwhelmingly devoted to things like guitar amp models and soft synths -- that's because until recently there was no way to send MIDI commands from iOS (not that some folks didn't figure out workarounds). That's why we were excited to hear about the appearance of MIDI APIs in iOS 4.2. What does this mean for all of you would-be Brian Enos? The gang over at Create Digital Music have put together a handy guide to what we might expect from a world where all out iOS devices can communicate via MIDI, whether through the USB cable or over WiFi -- and it is a brave new world, indeed. Intrigued? We were too! And we were pleased to find out that yes, the M-Audio Uno works with the iPad, and that the accelerometer can indeed be used to pitch bend. Unfortunately, we also learned that the Line 6 MIDI Mobilizer is a lot less exciting than we thought it might be (that is, until third party devs go to town on the thing). Hit the source link for all that stuff and more. Or just peep the video after the break, if you wonder what the next version of Pianist Pro holds.

Not only is the 3DS no longer alone in the 3D, glasses-free handheld market -- it's not alone in having 3D, glasses-free, handheld Capcom games. The GALAPAGOS 003SH and 005SH, two new Android phones offered by Japan's Softbank mobile phone company, both have 3D screens, and Capcom has announced three games that will come pre-installed on the devices.
3D versions of the iPhone's Ghosts 'n Goblins: Gold Knights and Resident Evil: Degeneration are joined by a 3D-ified port of the first Mega Man. So it's not quite the same scale as Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition and the two Resident Evil games Capcom is producing for 3DS.

Mozilla has released Beta 2 of Firefox 4 for Mobile. Some notable improvements over the initial beta release include 'reduced memory usage, improved text rendering and a 60% install size reduction on Android (from around 43 MB to 17 MB).' Mozilla also makes mention that 'actions like panning and zooming are faster and smoother, and page load times are reduced from our previous beta. On Android 2.2, we're now around 25% faster on the SunSpider JavaScript benchmark than the stock browser.' A future beta release will enable GL acceleration, which should further improve the performance of the browser.

Apple is warning iPhone users that the daylight savings time glitch that plagued Europe affects US iPhones too, meaning you'll wake up an hour late if you rely on the Clock app built into the device. Though Apple representatives say there's a permanent fix in the works, it's not due until iOS 4.2, so the company suggests you set a new alarm today if you want to rise on time. Since the bug apparently only affects certain repeating alarms, you can create a new one-time alarm (i.e. with the repeat option set to "never") instead, and the iPhone clock will take care of the rest. Don't be the gal or guy blaming your tardiness on failed technology, folks, when it's this easy to be able to point the finger at traffic, family, or spontaneous bouts of dance fever instead.

Though already open for early registrants, as of this week Microsoft has unbarred the floodgates for Windows Phone 7 app submissions from all developers. Full details and instructions can be found at the official App Hub, but if you're just curious about the experience overall, WP7 dev Adam Nathan -- who's reportedly submitted 30 through the system already -- outlines what he sees is the good, bad, and ugly of the process (literally). Face it, if you ever want to see your app on the Venue Pro, this is the gateway you must pass.

A patent filed by Apple in April of 2009, recently published by the USPTO, reveals what appears to be a concept for an augmented reality game. Specifically, the document seeks to patent a method for two "interactive game devices" to share locational data and track each other in a "real world, interactive game environment." Using the "interactive game device" -- which looks a lot like an iPhone in the diagrams -- each player's real-world actions would be tracked and their positions would be relayed via an icon on the screen.
One of the included diagrams illustrates an AR shooter game as an example, and the patent text even mentions the possibility of a "gun" attachment. It's important to note that what Apple is attempting to patent is the method for creating such a game -- devices communicating and displaying their positions -- not the game concept itself. Assuming such a game were created, it certainly looks interesting. Think of it as Laser Tag for a new generation. Oh, wait.

he Symbian Foundation has announced plans to "transition the role of the non-profit organisation".
Which means... what? According to its announcement, the Foundation will become "a legal entity responsible for licensing software and other intellectual property, such as the Symbian trademark".
That means Nokia will take on development of the Symbian OS in-house, although it has promised to make this "available to the ecosystem via an alternative direct and open model".
Still a bit hazy? It seems some Symbian Foundation board members have cut their funding for the platform, judging by executive director Tim Holbrow's statement.

Nokia is asserting its control over the Symbian OS that runs many of its smartphones, taking the tasks of developing the operating system away from the independent Symbian Foundation, which will now focus on licensing and intellectual property issues. Of course, this also illustrates Symbian's importance to Nokia's smartphone plans, even though the company is also developing phones that run the Linux-based Meego OS.

The recent iOS updates have mostly been welcome improvements for iPhone 4 and 3GS users, but it's been a decidedly different story for folks sticking to their venerable iPhone 3G. Not only have they been left out of some of the fun, but they were dealt a serious performance hit with iOS 4.0 that was only somewhat corrected by IOS 4.1. Could iOS 4.2 finally bring things back up to speed? According to the folks at TiPb, it just might -- they've now tested the iOS 4.2 gold master on an iPhone 3G and found that performance was noticeably improved across the board. Head on past the break to check out their results for yourself, and keep your fingers crossed that you'll actually see a similar improvement when the official update finally hits your 3G.

In case you missed it, Wired has a new piece out on the (very brief) history of Windows Phone 7. Unfortunately, the article pulls all punches, and skates through some bizarre statements from Microsofties, including calling Kin "a worthwhile risk that resulted in important lessons," and the real head scratcher of the piece: "Software is like making a movie and building a skyscraper. You're not quite sure how it's going to stand until it comes out in the end." Still, we were glad to find this slide (pictured above) in the article's photo gallery, chronicling the journey of the Metro design language from Microsoft's ill-fated Portable Media Center, to the vaguely successful Zune products, and around at last to the newly available Windows Phone 7. A bit of comeuppance for 2004's ahead-of-its-time, PlaysForSure-laden iPod killer? We like to think so.

For an "Open" Handset Alliance, Google has been keeping its cards rather close to its chest when it comes to the oft-discussed Gingerbread flavor of Android, specifically whether it would be another point release or could it be spicy enough to knock us up to 3.0. Now it's looking confirmed that Gingerbread is indeed 2.3, with Alvaro Fuentes Vasquez, member of the leadership team at the Open Handset Alliance (and who shall now be known as "The Gingerbread Man"), delivering this tweet:
Prepare your Nexus One (Developer version) for Android OTA update 2.3 (Gingerbread) in the next few days :-D
That's some good news for many N1 owners, and of course means it's time for those who possess other Android handsets to start with the hoping and the waiting.

Without question, Apple continues to forge ahead with making its operating systems more versatile and capable of accommodating the burgeoning number of options, tools, and demands that scores of applications present, despite the well-known present scarcity of screen space available to similarly accommodate so many choices. Our friends at Patently Apple, however, have uncovered an interesting find that speaks to how Apple may soon address this undeniable reality.
At Apple's "Back to Mac" event last month, Steve Jobs unveiled no shortage of cool features native to next summer's release of Apple newest operating system dubbed "Lion." But as the folks at Patently Apple point out, Jobs didn't dwell on the challenges incumbent on Mac users who will have to juggle the likes of a new Mac App Store, Launchpad, Full Screen Apps and Mission Control. As it turns out, Apple may have a little something up its sleeve with "scrollable menus and toolbars."

At Adobe’s recent MAX conference, Chief Technology Officer Kevin Lynch demonstrated new ways the company is working to integrate touch-screen devices with Photoshop. Adobe wants to integrate tablet devices like the iPad into Photoshop and currently has designers working to create mock-ups of possible ways to do this. Some of these mock-ups show Photoshop tool palettes running on an iPad and tutorials to help users get things done more quickly. "What we're working on is connecting your mobile devices to your personal computer over a network so that they can work in conjunction with each other," said CTO Kevin Lynch.
By using a device’s touchscreen as an input device, an image currently being worked on might appear on both computer and iPad screen. Then using an iPad to manipulate the picture, results would show up on both screens.

A new service allows you to watch network TV on your iPhone or iPad, free... at least for now. FilmOn.com offers live HD television in the US complete with commercials in what the company says is a free month-long trial. They claim that this service is "100% legal, but that didn't stop a lawsuit from a group of broadcasters. So grab it while you can: the site may not be up for long.
FlimOn was originally launched in the UK last year. The US site went live last month, featuring 30 channels like ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, the WB, Ion, and overseas networks such as Scuzz, Dubai Sports, and BBC News. It's run by what the Hollywood Reporter refers to as an "eccentric billionaire" who says the law allows what he is doing and has hired lawyers to defend himself. "Without a doubt, the Copyright Act upholds what FilmOn.com is doing

Hasbro is working with Apple to develop a peripheral that allows 3D images to be viewable on an iPhone or iPod Touch. The My3D peripheral will allow users the ability to view content in 3D and offers them a unique 360-degree field of view. It resembles a pair of binoculars and has a slot for an iPhone or iPod Touch. Starting next spring, it will be available for $30 wherever Apple accessories are sold.
Hasbro is working to develop 3D apps that will offer users a unique experience not previously available. Currently, there are several categories of apps being explored including: gaming apps, travel apps and entertainment apps. Hasbro has partnered with Dreamworks Animation to develop material for the device. Megamind will most likely be the first of many titles to get a movie tie-in gaming app.

Hi everyone. This is a port of Mednafen's PC Engine emulation to Android, and my first ever emulator port. I've only tested on a Droid/Milestone for now but hopefully it will run on other devices. I'm planning to have regular updates with more features/optimizations and other emulator ports in the future.
Hope you'll enjoy it Smile
Update: Version 1.2.0: supports homebrew PS3 consoles (runs HuCards only).
Update: Version 1.3.0: PS3 port supports bin+cue format CDs.
PCE.emu is PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 emulator written in C++ for Android, iOS and PS3. It uses the emulation backend from Mednafen and is built on top of the Imagine engine. The source is released under the GPLv3 license.
Coming in future updates:- Additional speed optimizations
- Updated GUI with more control & display options
- Native Wiimote support (may require Android 2.0+, I'm still looking into it)
The Android version is designed for the Motorola Droid/Milestone, but should work on devices with similar specs. Actual speed depends on a combination of CPU clock speed and the how fast textures upload to the device's GPU. The PS3 version will run on any homebrew-capable console. The iOS version runs on any compatible device but an ARM Cortex-based CPU is recommend (iPhone 3GS and newer). Get it for your platform on the Downloads page.
Features:- Accurate emulation and high compatibility rate.
- Zip file support
- CD emulation via loading cue files, you must have a system card rom named syscard.pce in the same directory as your cue files.
- Cue files may use external audio tracks in Ogg Vorbis & Wav (PCM, ADPCM, etc) formats (not working on PS3 currently)
- Optional on-screen multi-touch controls in addition to keyboard controls (needs Android 2.1 for multi-touch)
- Backup memory and save state support, one auto-save and one manual slot for save states
- No user activation or other nonsense

Performance Notes (as of version 1.3.0):- Android : 55-60fps with hucards on a 550Mhz Droid running Android 2.2. CDs may need slight overclock (600-700Mhz) to run at similar speeds depending on the game's screen mode. On-screen controller can cause a small speed hit so disable it when not in use, will be optimized in the future.
- iOS: 60fps on iPhone 4 with hucards & CDs (~50% cpu utilization). 20-30fps on iPod Touch 2nd gen.
- PS3: 60fps with hucards & CDs.
Default Controls for Android:- D-pad : navigate menus (Up & Down), Left to go up a directory in file picker, Right to select highlighted entry
- Z, X : Buttons I & II
- Space : Select
- Return : Run
- Menu : open/close the main menu
- L : go directly to Load Rom menu
- Q : Save State
- W : Load State
- Search : Fast-forward in-game
- Back button : Exit game or go back in menus
Controls for iOS:- Touch top-right corner : open the main menu
- Touch bottom-left corner : Fast-forward in-game (deactivates upon next input elsewhere on screen)
Controls for PS3:- D-pad : navigate menus (Up & Down), Left to go up a directory in file picker, Right to select highlighted entry
- Cross : confirm/select menu entry, Button I
- Circle : cancel menu entry/go back, Button II
- Select : Select
- Start: Run
- L2 : open/dismiss menu
- R2 : Fast-forward
Currently known issues/bugs:- No international character support in gui
- Not really a bug, but when running on a case-sensitive file system make sure your CUE file specifies references in the same case as on the file system.
- PS3: only 1 controller is supported
- PS3: loading a CUE file with external audio tracks causes the system to lock up
- PS3: sound is not synced properly, causes slight distortion in the audio

In this article, security researcher Nitesh Dhanjani shows how iOS insecurely launches third-party apps via registered URL handlers. Malicious websites can abuse this to launch arbitrary applications, such as getting the Skype.app to make arbitrary phone calls without asking the user. Dhanjani 'contacted Apple's security team to discuss this behavior, and their stance is that the onus is on the third-party applications (such as Skype in this case) to ask the user for authorization before performing the transaction.' He also discusses what developers of iOS apps can do to design their software securely and what Apple can do to help out."

Ah, the beautiful, ever-useful jailbreak and the developers that make it worthwhile. It's already unlocked the magic of FaceTime over 3G, and now it's making FaceTime capable with any old iPhone 3GS handset (thanks to the iPhoneIslam Team, who did the heavy lifting). Of course, lacking a front facing camera, the resulting video chat might be a little short on faces, but the functionality certainly isn't hurting anybody. Right, Apple? Hit up the app on Cydia and start streaming to your heart's content, and if you're wary there's a demo video after the break.

Sure, it might not make for as good of an R&B album title as Nilay Patel's "Beautiful Handcuffs," but Interactive Fabrication's "Beautiful Modeler" iPad app is probably a bit more useful (though not as useful with the ladies). The concept is to use the iPad's multitouch screen as an input for multi-finger 3D modeling on a computer, while the tablet's tilt sense lets you navigate around the object. Sure, it's not as slick or precise as, say, the Axsotic 3D mouse, but it also looks a whole lot more "tangible." Unfortunately, the app is currently unavailable on the App Store, and we have no idea if it's ever headed for a computer near you -- Interactive Fabrication is all about the high concept stuff, leaving the execution to individuals -- but there's some freely available GPL-licensed source code if you want to take a crack at compiling and making a real product out of this.

It seems that the iPhone 2g and 3g are the newest phones to get Android 2.2, codenamed Froyo. The process for installing Froyo if you have a jailbroken device seems to get even easier every time, with this revision being as simple as adding a repository, downloading Froyo, and pressing go. Follow the link for a wonderful step by step guide, complete with screenshots to take out all of the guess work. Android on iPhone sure has come a long way since the first time we covered it.

iPhone owners carry higher balances on their credit cards than Android, Blackberry, and Windows Mobile users, according to an analysis by a mobile financial service provider. Pageonce published data today showing that, on average, iPhone users have a 35% higher balance on their monthly credit card statement than the average Windows Mobile user. However, the average monthly phone bill was lower for iPhone users than for any other smartphone.
The Pageonce app monitors users' cash flow, spending and bills and organizes account information and transactions. The company used data from 275,000 of its three users - including at least 5,000 users for each mobile platform - to look at how owners of different smartphones compare.

Development staff at Warner Bros’ new Montreal outfit are said to be angered at management’s decision to shift the studio’s focus to social and mobile games.
Warner Bros needs to grow its Montreal workforce to 300 employees by 2015 – a strategy first conceived for triple-A production.
Yet Warner Bros Montreal’s existing 26 employees are, according to Canadian newspaper Lapressaffaires, being told to work on bite-sized mobile/social games and a microtransaction-based MMO.
“Some staff were surprised by the change in philosophy, sometimes to the point of leaving the company,†the paper alleged.
The studio’s general manager Martin Carrier said the focus is a response to a games market in flux; with the social and mobile spaces offering lucrative alternatives to triple-A production.
"Before, we perceived the [social/mobile] market as a secondary market, but today is a growing market with the democratization of video games. Commercially, we believe we can sell more than games on a grand scale," Carrier told the paper.
Local politicians have invested a $7.5 million grant, as well as various tax credits, in the studio.
Projects underway and in place at Warner Bros Montreal will draw from DC Comics-related IP.

It may not solve some of the problems involved with actually running Android on an iPhone, but the recently released Bootlace 2.1 application for jailbroken iPhones does at least make the installation process easier than ever. Unfortunately, it only works with the iPhone 2G and 3G at the moment, but it will let you install Android 2.2 (a.k.a Froyo) directly on the device without the need for a computer. Hit up the source link below for the complete installation instructions -- and insert your own joke here about the iPhone running Froyo while your Android phone is still stuck at 2.1.

As expected, Sprint's just announced the ZTE Peel for the iPod touch will arrive on November 14th. The $79 slider case for Apple's media player features a built-in mobile WiFi hotspot, essentially turning your iPod into a bulky iPhone without a native phone or SMS app. Of course, you'll still be stuck paying Sprint for a $29/mo data plan, but you'll be able to connect up to two devices to the Peel's WiFi as well, so that's a plus. Another big plus: since the iPod thinks it's on WiFi, you'll be able to use FaceTime on the road -- something we've tried using a MiFi with pretty decent results. Of course, you'll be saddled with a big fat case around your oh-so-slim iPod, and we can't imagine why the Peel is limited to WEP when it comes to security, but we'll definitely applaud Sprint for attitude when it comes to iOS devices on its network-- now just kick out a 4G Peel and we'll be all set.

French citizens have been enjoying webOS 2.0 with their morning baguette for over two weeks, but it's one step closer to home today -- Pocket-lint reports that the Palm Pre 2 will launch in the United Kingdom this Friday. What's more, the 1GHz handset won't be chained to a British carrier, but rather released into the wild completely SIM-free, which probably means future Just Typists will need to buy it direct from HP. As for the promised pre-orders for US students, we're sorry to say they've failed to materialize; the Facebook page that once clearly stated "preorders begin 11/8" now simply reads "Palm Pre 2 coming soon." Soon enough for you?

According to a recent research survey, iPhone 4s are the most reliable smartphones, while still being the most prone to accidental damage. Third-party warranty provider SquareTrade looked at their SquareTrade Care Plan database and analyzed failure rates of over 50,000 smart phones covered by the company's Care Plans, finding that the iPhone 4 had the least malfunctions but was the most susceptible to accidents. The study also showed that all manufacturers improved their failure rate since the first such study in 2008.
SquareTrade looked at four months of iPhone 4 warranty claims, eight months of claims from Motorola and HTC owners, and a year of iPhone 3GS claims, then extrapolated a 12-month failure rate - excluding accidental damage - for all devices. The iPhone 4 device was the most reliable with only 2.1% of the owners reporting a malfunction, followed closely by iPhone 3GS...

Microsoft's reboot of its smartphone division seems to have suffered a major setback in its first real test, apparently selling only 40,000 Windows Phone 7 devices on the day of its release in the US - despite an estimated $100 million marketing budget.
That figure is spread across nine different models of smartphone supporting the new OS and architecture, between the two US carriers currently stocking the phone - At&T and T-Mobile.
The figure was reported by business site The Street, which cites its source as a 'market research firm' but does not give details. No international figures are available.
To put that figure into context, Apple claims that 270,000 iPhones are being sold each day, internationally, while Google puts the daily sales for its Android phones at around 200,000.
"It's early in the game," Nielsen telecom analyst Roger Entner told The Street. "Not every product surges right out of the starting blocks. The first Android phone was not a big seller at T-Mobile."
"We'll see what happens with Black Friday sales. They'll probably cut prices like everyone else does. It's the nature of the beast. The only one that doesn't do promotions is Apple."
However, many retailers and twitter users posting with the #WP7 hashtag were reporting sell-outs across the US and in other territories. Microsoft and the US carriers have declined to publish any official sales figures for the phones.
Windows Phone 7 offers customers integrated Xbox Live and Games for Windows Live support - a feature countered by Apple's Game Center feature.

A Lego Mindstorms robotics kit controlled by an HTC Nexus One smartphone successfully untangled a Rubik's Cube puzzle in 12.5 seconds at this weeks ARM technical conference in Silicon Valley. The current 3x3x3 cube-solvers's 15-second average represents a substantial improvement over the 25-second solutions of an earlier version, which was powered by a circa-2006 Nokia N95 smartphone, thanks to a faster (1GHz) CPU, more RAM, and revamped cube-solving algorithms. ARM Engineer David Gilder, who created the robotic cube-solver, claims the current version's algorithms can handle cube complexities up to 100x100x100, assuming he build the mechanics. In terms of racing humans, Gilder says the Lego robotics kits can only manage around 1.5 moves per second, whereas human players can make between 5 and 6 moves per second, amazingly enough.

vanstinator was one of several readers to point out that Christie's is holding an auction for one of the original Apple 1 machines, complete with a manual, the original shipping box, and the letter from Steve Jobs to the owner. The invoice says the computer was purchased on December 7th, 1976, with an Apple cassette interface card, for a total price of $741.66. The auction house expects it to sell for over $160,000.

Can you feel the iOS 4.2 anticipation building? After all, it's not every day your tablet computer gets upgraded to multitasking. Apple just seeded a new gold master of iOS 4.2 to developers (build 8C134b, as opposed to 8C134), which deals with the WiFi issue that apparently delayed the launch. As long as this build is free of any more killer bugs, that new copy of iOS should make its way to proletariat hardware soon -- though obviously this week looks like a no-go.

We suspect most developers have gathered this since MIX earlier this year -- many of them have been dealing with variations of the problem since the genesis of Microsoft's .NET Framework -- but we thought we'd throw out a note that word's getting around on how easy it is to tear apart applications downloaded from the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace, gain access to their resources, and get a look at their inner workings. Microsoft has been encouraging developers on the desktop to make this tough by using code obfuscation tools -- Dotfuscator, specifically -- for many years, but Dotfuscator's developer has only just released a free version (through March 31 of next year) for WP7, so it's made things tough to secure. In other words: business as usual, and "business as usual" isn't as airtight as your average white-hat dev would like.
On a happier note, an enterprising coder by the name of Chris Walsh has fleshed out some hooks into unmanaged (read: native) Windows Phone 7 services. It's not what we'd call a "jailbreak" -- you're not altering the security settings of the device in any way -- you're just taking advantage of undocumented services Microsoft has in place, though it's still very cool. Walsh promises some tutorials on hooking into cool stuff like file system and registry access soon, but he notes that apps using these hooks are still running as managed tasks, meaning they can be slapped around by the kernel (killed, suspended, and so on) just as any other WP7 app can -- and we also doubt you'd be able to get Marketplace approval using this stuff.

We've already got the Mac OS X update, and here's iTunes 10.1. Next stop? iOS 4.2. If your copy of iTunes isn't pushing the update, you can head to Apple's page where it'll be there, waiting for you. In addition to paving way for the new iOS, iTunes 10.1 adds the much anticipated video AirPlay feature (it launched as audio only), so fire up that Apple TV and push yourself some vids!

'Security researchers have demonstrated two vulnerabilities that allow attackers to install apps on Android and its vendor-specific implementations without a user's permission. During normal installation, users are at least asked to confirm whether an application is to have certain access rights. Bypassing this confirmation request reportedly allows spyware or even diallers to be installed on a smartphone.' One vulnerability was identified when a security specialist analysed HTC devices and found that the integrated web browser has the right to install further packages (used to automatically update its Flash Lite plug-in). Attackers can exploit this if they have found another browser hole. 'Android specialist Jon Oberheide demonstrated another hole which involved misusing the Account Manager to generate an authentication token for the Android Market and obtaining permission to install further apps from there. However, this initially requires a specially crafted app to be installed on the smartphone. Nothing could be easier: Oberheide released the allegedly harmless "Angry Birds Bonus Levels" app into the Android Market and, upon installation, this app downloaded and installed three further apps ("Fake Toll Fraud," "Fake Contact Stealer," and "Fake Location Tracker") without requesting the user's permission.

Folks on this side of the pond will unfortunately miss out on this one, but our friends in the UK will soon be able to get their hands on Elgato's new EyeTV Netstream Sat box and make everyone else a bit envious. It will not only let you stream Freesat satellite TV to any computer on your home network, but straight to your iPad as well with Elgato's EyeTV app (though not your iPhone or iPod touch, it seems). That sort of streaming has been possible before but, as Pocket-lint notes, you previously had to keep your computer on to stream satellite video to your iOS device. Look for the device to start shipping on November 22nd for £189.95 (or about $300), while the EyeTV app will set you back an extra £2.99.

Netflix has always been something of a fickle beast, lavishing treats upon just one platform at a time, but now that iOS, Windows Phone 7 and every game console under the sun are streaming its video, the firm's finally turned its gaze on Android. Come early 2011, Netflix will appear on "select Android devices," according to the company's official blog, which also promises a "standard, platform-wide solution" for Android in the unspecified future. What took so long, and why will Netflix be limited to particular handsets when it first rolls out? "The hurdle has been the lack of a generic and complete platform security and content protection mechanism available for Android," says the blog, stating piracy concerns. Apparently content holders aren't too keen on making movies available unless devices have DRM baked right in, so the solution is equip new phones with padlocks one at a time. Expect next year's high-end Android devices to have "Netflix" as a nice big bullet point.

Do you remember playing with those classic LCD handhelds in the 80s? Tiger and Nintendo's Game & Watch provided us with hours of simple handheld gaming. It's a far cry from the gaming available on today's portables, but it was the best we could get back then.
Developer Frugal Games wants to capitalize on nostalgia with its first self-published release: Flee, for Android. "We tried to recreate the feeling of playing an LCD handheld from the 80s," the developer told us. "But we didn't want to just emulate. We created from scratch a new and original game that adds updated gameplay and contemporary game design." There are some cool, subtle touches in the game. For example, the virtual device gets dirtier the more you use it. You'll also see the screen distort when you press the screen. Classy!
The game is currently available on the Android marketplace for one Euro. There is a free "Lite" version as well, one that includes less levels, less songs and is more prone to getting virtually dirty. It's certainly one of the most clever ways we've seen a developer try to convince players to upgrade to the non-free version.

Although the Palm Pre 2 -- the first device to sport WebOS 2.0 -- is set to go on sale in the United Kingdom sans SIM for £399 (that's roughly $645) on November 12th, it looks like a lot of the major carriers will not be carrying the device. Pocket-lint personally contacted Orange, Vodafone, Three and O2 (a company which carried the Pre, Pre Plus, Pixi and Pixi Plus) and all had essentially the same thing to say: there are no plans to carry the device at this time. This isn't great news for Palm lovers across the way, and it's certainly not making anyone at the newly merged HP / Palm happy. Of course, none of the statements save O2's are definitive, so we'll keep our eyes peeled for any changes. We can always hope.

Tech site Silicon Alley Insider has published the results of its survey of iPad owners, to find out how they are using Apple's tablet.
It finds that two thirds of iPad owners use the device for between one and five hours a day, and that nearly 30% say it has become their primary computer.
39.4% of iPad owners have downloaded 20-50 apps, while 16.7% have downloaded more than 50. However, web browsing remains the most popular activity for the device, followed by email and social networking.
The survey found that 28.5% of iPad owners have paid for 1-5 apps, 24.5% have paid for 6-10, and 27.8% have paid for 10-20. Most people are using less than 10 apps on a regular basis, however.
Finally, the research found that 74.5% of iPad owners are reading e-books on the device, but that Amazon's Kindle app is more popular than Apple's own iBooks.

The frontman of cartoon pop group Gorillaz has claimed that he made his forthcoming album on the iPad.
In an interview with NME, Damon Albarn said that he created the follow-up to the Plastic Beach album in a succession of hotel rooms while on tour in the United States.
“I've made it on an iPad – I hope I'll be making the first record on an iPad,†said Albarn. “I fell in love with my iPad as soon as I got it, so I've made a completely different kind of record.â€
His comments come just after the band was signed up to promote the beta release of the newest incarnation of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, claiming that the software was like a “wizards portalâ€.

Shiny Entertainment founder and long-standing games industry veteran David Perry is working on a new game for iPad.
Not to be confused with Dave 'Games Animal' Perry of GamesMaster fame, this is the David Perry that invented Earthworm Jim, co-founded the cloud gaming service Gaikai, and presumably doesn't cry like a girl when he loses at a video game.
Speaking with Develop, Perry revealed he's working with a European developer on the new unnamed game as a side-project, while he continues work on Gaikai.
"The game project is perfect fit for me because I don't have to do it every day," he said. "Actually, me and the team tend to meet up at trade shows, huddle together, and talk about the design."
Perry held back on revealing any details on the game, even leaving the developer unannounced, saying only that it's being built on the Unity platform and that it "looks like no other iPad game".
While Perry's been out of development for a while, he says he still has a great interest in making games. "It's a bit like when you're watching a movie and you think 'I wish that scene went more like this'. You can't help it some times. That's often how I feel when I'm playing games. So I'm not giving up on development," he said.

Amid all the buzz around Rovio's Angry Birds franchise in recent weeks, something appears to have gone unnoticed this week.
It's being out-grossed by the Smurfs.
Specifically, Capcom's Smurfs' Village iPhone game is ahead of Angry Birds in both the US and UK App Stores' Top Grossing Games charts.
That's all the more surprising because Smurfs' Village is a freemium game: the money that it's grossing is coming from in-app payments for its 'smurfberries' virtual currency.
Angry Birds, by contrast, is making its money purely from its $0.99 download cost.
Smurfs' Village's success shows how freemium games are becoming big moneyspinners on iPhone.
It's joined in the Top 20 Grossing Games US chart by fellow freemium titles Tap Zoo, Restaurant Story, Touch Pets Cats, Kingdoms At War, Zombie Farm, FarmVille, Trade Nations, Texas Poker and We Rule Quests.
Half the Top 20 Grossing Games are freemium, in other words. Forget the Angry Birds plush toys: it seems smart consumers may be digging out their childhood Papa Smurfs this Christmas instead...

We don't quite know how to break it to you, but if PreCentral sources are correct, Palm's hit a very interesting landmark: its comeback device, the Pre for Sprint, has reportedly reached End of Life (EOL). Warehouse quantities are said to be limited, and after that... well... have fun scouring eBay. Or better yet, maybe consider another carrier for the Plus model or even a full-blown sequel; we can't imagine the original Pixi's gonna cool your cravings. It's been a wild ride since that June 5th, 2009 launch, eh?

We'll be the first to admit that we've been slightly confused about where Google's Chrome OS will fit in with Android becoming the OS of choice for tablet manufacturers, so naturally we took the opportunity to ask Google CEO Eric Schmidt about the two operating systems while he was on stage at the Web 2.0 summit. Schmidt confirmed that Chrome OS will officially be out in the next few months in Intel and ARM-powered netbooks while also adding that the OS was primarily "designed around something with a keyboard." Of course, that doesn't mean Chrome OS couldn't pop up on tablets -- he added that because it's open source anything can happen, but he definitely stressed that Chrome is meant for clamshell devices with keyboards and Android tailored for those with touchscreens. Sounds good to us Schmidt, now we'll just be needing the details on those Chrome-books...

Whoa, what's this? Apple just updated its homepage with a new splash screen teasing an "exciting announcement from iTunes" at 10AM ET tomorrow, saying that "Tomorrow is just another day. That you'll never forget." All streaming subscription service based out of that North Carolina data center? More video content in the store? Apps for the Apple TV with the iOS 4.2 update? The Beatles? Whatever it is, we're digging for more, and we'll let you know as soon as we find out.

Apple has finally approved the official Google Voice app for iOS. After 16 months of being in app-review limbo, the app is finally here, but only for users in the US, and not for iPod Touch users. An interesting use for the app would be to use it as a dialing front end on an iPod touch in concert with a VOIP service, but it seems like this isn't an option for now. It seems like non-US users can get the app if they have a US iTunes account. You can create a US iTunes account without a credit card by following this Apple article.

Yesterday Apple put a big old teaser up on their homepage for an unknown announcement to occur today. Speculation ran rampant from the delayed iOS 4.2, to iTunes Streaming to a release of the Beatles catalog on the iTunes store. Well, it was the latter. They have 13 albums on the store now, and a $150 box set. So here's hoping that we get that iPad multitasking yet this November.

Starting today, attempted wormicide just got a bit more interesting through the release of the "Battle Pack" DLC, which adds a new single-player campaign of 30 new deathmatches, more customization options, new game modes such as "Warzone," "Forts Pro" on iOS and the survival variant "Bodycount" on PS3, a slew of new awards and Trophies and, of course, new weapons, which include "termites, ferrets and worship statues." Sorry, European PS3 users -- you've got to wait until tomorrow before you can access the new content.
The DLC will set worm wranglers back $1.99 on iOS devices, while the PS3 booster shot will cost a bit more at $4.99 (€3.99 in Europe). Feel free to check out some screens of the new content in our galleries below, if you want. It's not like you have a worm with a shotgun pointing at your back or anything if you don't. Oh, by the way, don't turn around!

The next update for the iPhone version of Street FIghter IV adds at least one new fighter: Sagat. One of the screenshots included with the update also shows Dee Jay, who, curiously, wasn't announced. Tiger uppercuts and MAXIMUM pants aren't the only new additions to the phone fighter, however: the update also adds a new feature that sounds like it's straight out of Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition.
You'll be able to turn on a new mode that searches for nearby players while you're in single-player, allowing them to challenge you to matches even while you're playing solo. You'll also be able to exchange "player cards," should you happen upon someone else who not only has Street Fighter IV for iPhone, but is playing it right then.

A pair of Harvard researchers have used an iPhone app to track the moods of thousands of participants in a study about happiness. Querying over two thousand iPhone users at random points in the day, the psychologists found people are happiest when they are focused on what they're doing than when they are spacing out, even if they are having pleasant thoughts.
The researchers knew that studying people's states of mind during their normal lives would be difficult and problematic. Calling people several times a day would be extremely time consuming as well as counter-productive: most people would probably report less happiness after being bothered by phone calls asking if they were happy. So Harvard doctoral student Matthew Killingsworth and psychology professor Daniel Gilbert set up TrackYourHappiness.org to contact 2,250 iPhone users, ages 18 to 88, at random times of day and ask three simple questions: "How are you feeling right now?" "What are you doing

Mobile games publisher Chillingo says it has now sold more than three million copies of its Cut The Rope game on Apple's App Store.
The game, developed by ZeptoLab, has been pitched as 'the new Angry Birds' by Chillingo - the original publisher of Rovio's beaky bestseller.
The company is hoping to repeat Angry Birds' success with a similar strategy of free content updates, starting with version 1.1 of Cut The Rope, with 25 new levels and an 'anti-gravity' feature.
"We actively listen to audience feedback to deliver the best gaming experience possible whether it’s through updated content or modifying areas of concern to optimize the title," says co-general manager Chris Byatte.
ZeptoLab CTO Efim Voinov says that another update will be released in time for Christmas with more new content.

This one's strictly in the "just for fun" category of stat comparisons, but the guys over at TUAW decided to do a little headcount of the sheer number of games Apple's App Store has available for consumption. Then, just for fun, they decided to compare that to some publicly available stats on how many games the last 25 years of consoles, both the sort that plug into your teevee and the handheld type, have churned out. Of course, the caveats are plentiful, as there are a lot of duplicates and Lite versions floating about in the App Store (as well as multi-platform games among the consoles), but the general point that iOS has a lot of games on its books is made pretty clearly. Now if anyone wants to document how many Flash games there are for browser-based consumption, we look forward to reading your results in 2013.

Internet Explorer not stirring your cup of Windows Phone 7 tea correctly? Well, you now have an alternative in the form of a new browser that's arrived in the Marketplace: Browser+. It does seem to have been built on IE code rather than its own framework, so don't get your hopes up for Chrome to Phone on WP7 any time soon. Anyhow, the new app's been given a test drive by a couple of sites, who note it integrates a view of your current tabs and a Google search box right into the general web view, providing a slightly more accessible interface than the default option, while also throwing in a private surfing mode for the paranoid among us. A few crashes and bugs have been spotted in Browser+ so far, but hey, it's cheap and it at least gives us hope for a less monotheistic browsing experience. See it in video action after the break.

On Thursday, Apple released to developers a brand new version of the Golden Master iOS firmware for the iDevices (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch). Bumped up to 4.2.1 Build 8C148, we may now be closer than ever to the final version delivering fixes to the glitches, bugs, and other shortcomings with which many of us are familiar.
From Network World:
Quote:
The new GM has reportedly been released to address bugs and errors found in previous builds. Earlier on Thursday, MacRumors published an e-mail sent out by VoIP developer Toktumi--responsible for calling app Line2--that warns customers not to upgrade to the latest

If you though the iPad was sleek and light as a feather, just wait until you get a load of the second-generation iPad. If reports published today prove accurate, the next iPad to reach consumers could be pretty incredible. In fact, traders and financial analysts on Wall Street are already reacting to the news that Apple is said to be considering the use of carbon fiber to produce the housing for its popular line of iDevices, but most likely for the iPad.
To be clear, this isn't a rumor or an un-sourced speculation. The suggestion comes directly from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Freshly published images indicate Apple's model for an iPad shell composed of "layered fiber-in-matrix type material, such as CFRP," which, in reality, is carbon fiber-reinforced polymer. The most noticeable consequence of making the move to carbon fiber, of course, would be an even lighter iPad, as the presently utilized aluminum encasing would be gone.

A 17-year-old in New York City who bought parts from China to make white iPhone 4 conversion kits has made a pile of money… and a potentially dangerous enemy. Fei Lam, a high school senior from Queens, says he's gotten a threatening letter from a private investigator accusing him of selling stolen goods, and thinks it sounds a lot like the legal threats Apple made against the kid who found/stole the iPhone 4 test unit back in April.
Lam - like many iPhone users - was tired of waiting for the white iPhone 4. But unlike many iPhone users in the US, he speaks fluent Mandarin and has contacts at Apple's manufacturer in China. Working through "a guy from a few years back that had somewhat of a relationship with folks in Foxconn," Lam was able to get what he claims are authentic iPhone 4 white screens, digitizers, bezels, home buttons and case backs.

Hints of a free MobileMe service can be seen in a new framework in the iOS 4.2 gold master. Error messages show when a user has reached "the maximum number of free accounts" for a given device and when a device is not “qualified for free MobileMe service." There's also a message saying that an Apple ID can't be used for MobileMe Mail but can be used for other services.
When the iOS 4.2 GM originally dropped last month, many people noted that it allowed users to sign in to their MobileMe accounts using their Apple IDs. This led to renewed speculation that Apple might offer a free MobileMe service for iDevice users through their Apple IDs.

In the ongoing effort by Apple to expand the iPad's reach across the globe as much as possible before the end of 2010, now comes word that Northern Europe may be next on the list to see the tablet's arrival before the dawn of 2011. In recent days, many country-specific Apple pages throughout Northern Europe have begun advertising the iPad and carriers for 3G connectivity for the first time.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the Nordic countries on tap to get the iPad include Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. So far, the regional carriers advertised to provide 3G service to new iPad owners are Telenor ASA, TeliaSonera AB, Tre, and Tele2 AB. It isn't yet clear if the iPad will be available through the carriers as well as Apple in Northern Europe, but it doesn't appear so. TeliaSonera, for example, says it will only provide 3G service for the tablet. It won't actually stock and sell the device. As of this writing, data plans and contract terms have not been confirmed

The CEO of the Financial Times newspaper told his 1,800 employees in a memo Thursday he will give anyone who buys an iPad or other tablet a reimbursement of £300 (about $480 US). In the memo, CEO John Ridding said the company was "making this investment because digital channels and tablet devices are becoming increasingly important for us."
The FT's iPad app has 40,000 registered users, which represent 10 percent of the paper's digital subscriptions, and has made £1 million from sales of in-app advertisements since it was launched in May. The strategy in trying to get its own employees hooked on iPads seems to be both a way to get more feedback on the app

As the new year approaches, there's a surge in rumors about the next-generation iPad. Consistent reports have indicated that the tablet will get a refresh ahead of its one-year anniversary in April, which would mean that production should start ramping up right about now. Rumors out of the Asian supply chain say that suppliers have been picked for the 2G iPad, and one financial analyst is claiming that the new model will have a "world-mode" chip that can run on both AT&T's and Verizon's networks.
DigiTimes, the hit-or-miss electronics industry gossip newspaper out of Taiwan, says that Apple has chosen circuit board suppliers for the 2011 iPad. Production of any-layer high-density interconnect (HDI) circuit boards will begin at Ibiden, Tripod Technology and TTM Technologies in December

[Mike Silverman] rigged up a way to make his monitor sleep from an iPhone. Working with a Windows system, he installed QuickPHP and NirCmd to add PHP and command line controls. Some quick PHP code writing and this has the effect of creating a sleep button toggled via a network address. He loads up the IP and port information in the Safari browser of his iPhone, creating a Home Screen short cut seen in the image above. Now he clicks on the button and puts the screen to sleep.
It’s not that we find this functionality useful since most monitors sleep after a few minutes of inactivity. But we like the methodology and you can bet we’re already planning uses for this. Any PHP server (like the copy of Apache running on this machine) will do as long as it’s on the same LAN as the iPhone’s WiFi connection.

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has turned the blogosphere upside down twice this past week. First, in a recently published interview with Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, Wozniak was quoted saying that smartphones running Google's Android mobile operating system will likely have a better and brighter future than Apple's very own iPhone. It's a comment that got everyone in the tech space talking, including PC World, which published the following on Thursday:
Quote:
Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak thinks Android will eventually beat the iPhone as a mobile-phone platform in much the same way Windows computers squeezed Apple's market share in the PC

Apple's (as yet unconfirmed) plans to make an iPhone with a built-in, programmable SIM chip is getting a strong push-back from European carriers who would have the most to lose from the shift away from physical SIMs. The Financial Times of London reports that carriers are saying Apple may provoke a "war" if they pursue this technology, and that they may decide to just stop offering iPhone subsidies in protest. Meanwhile, the industry group representing carriers is working on its own embedded SIM.
As we reported a few weeks ago, Apple is said to be working with SIM-card manufacturer Gemalto to make a programmable SIM-on-a-chip that would let consumers buy a phone directly from Apple and activate it with the carrier of their choice via iTunes.

Apple is releasing iOS 4.2.1 today for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, finally unifying all iOS product lines under the same firmware version. As a part of the update, Apple will make Find My iPhone available for free to owners of newer iOS devices that can run iOS 4.2.
Ahead of the release - expected to drop at 10 am Pacific time in the US, 6pm GMT - Apple updated the iOS webpage to highlight all of the iOS 4 functionality iPhone and iPod touch users have been able to use for months that will now be coming to the iPad. "iOS 4.2 makes the iPad a completely new product, just in time for the holiday season,"

Id Software has released Rage, an on-rails first-person shooter for iOS. The game is visually stunning, and is a great demonstration of just how good an iOS game can look. Video games have really come a long way since the iPhone was first introduced three years ago, and game developers like Id continue to push the iOS hardware to its visual limits.
Id Software’s Doom Resurrection was released back in ’09 and it was quite a visual treat back then. Now that Rage is available in the App Store, the bar has been raised once again. Rage is available in two flavors, a standard version ($.99) and Rage HD ($1.99) with higher resolution textures and graphics. Rage HD is definitely the one to check out, but the game requires at least a third generation iOS device or an iPad.

One gets the sense that Apple-savvy customers have caught on to the likelihood of Apple releasing a second-generation iPad in the not-too-distant future. Although many analysts don't anticipate a release of iPad 2 before spring, the prospect of a first quarter refresh of the iPad next year is now believed to be discouraging many customers from purchasing the first generation iPad this holiday season either for themselves or for someone else.
In recent weeks, the same sources (overseas suppliers) who reported the forthcoming iPad 2 have similarly begun expressing concerns that the looming prospect of a brand new iPad (likely one with a front facing camera for FaceTime video chats) will severely hamper the current runaway sales of the Apple tablet. Yours truly can even report two individuals purchasing huge Apple holiday gift cards at a Chicago Apple retail outlet this past weekend for this very reason

News via http://modmyi.com/forums/mac-news/73...w-heights.html
There was a lot to absorb today from Apple's comprehensive press release heralding the arrival of iOS 4.2 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. From making the "Find My iPhone" feature free and able to use sans MobileMe, to countless new attributes for the iPad (like multitasking, folders, etc.) and the dawn of Game Center, AirPlay & AirPrint, Apple is keeping us on our toes today with no shortage of sweet arrivals for our iDevices.
Understandably, there's a lot to be distracted with from Apple's iOS 4.2 drop today. One such example of a buried morsel of overlooked information is the fact that customers have now downloaded in excess of seven billion apps from the App Store. We've also officially breached the 300,000-level in terms of applications now available for download in 90 countries. Remarkable, of course, is that 40,000 of those apps are native to the iPad

News via http://modmyi.com/forums/iphone-news...jailbreak.html
Just as Paul had said early this morning, iOS 4.2 has now been greenlit to go live and is available for download to the public. Many iPad users will be excited for this, of course that is unless you require/love/need/want a jailbreak.
If your hoping to jump on the iOS 4.2 firmware, do not expect a jailbreak to be ready just yet. This may take a few weeks to a month, or even a day. What's important right now, is to stay on iOS 4.1 and make sure your SHSH Blobs are saved. This will ensure you can always preform a jailbreak on your device at this firmware version. If you do not want to lose your jailbreak, DO NOT UPDATE to iOS 4.2 yet. Pleas wait until official tools have been updated/released.
While the new features look great, be patient, and in time you will be able to upgrade. But for now, play safe, and stay away from that update.

Orange and T-Mobile will subsidize Wi-Fi + 3G iPads for customers who order 18 month and 24 month service plans. Although there's no pricing information from either company or their parent Everything Everywhere, reports claim that the iPad Wi-Fi + 3G 16GB will be available for £200, which about $320 US.
The UK advertising site MarketingWeek was out first with the news that Everything Everywhere, the British wireless behemoth formed out of the merger of Orange UK and T-Mobile UK was planning to sell iPads at reduced prices for the Christmas holiday. Orange later acknowledged the plan in a press release, but there is as yet no official confirmation from T-Mobile, and no information about pricing.

With the release of Firmware version 4.2.1, rises the concern of jailbreaking and unlock compatibility. If your waiting for an unlock, wait for the ability to create custom 4.2.1 firmwares. If you’re not an unlocker, then there is good news for jailbreaking your devices.
Those of you who own an iPhone3G, older iPhone3GS, and non-MC iPod touch 2G will benefit the most with this news from the Dev-Team. They explain that due to a combination of the original pwnage2 exploit, the arm7_go exploit, 24kpwn, and limera1n, your device is “just as jailbreakable as ever.â€
For those of you with the newer devices, geohot’s limera1n exploit, will actually work just fine. The unfortunate news is that, as of right now, the 4.2.1 jailbreak is *tethered* on new devices. What is a tethered jailbreak? "A tethered jailbreak means that each time your device loses battery power or needs to be rebooted, you must attach it to a PC or Mac

MartiniBoy got out in front with this earlier today, but I just wanted to make sure the news was on the main page. The Dev-Team updated redsn0w to version 0.9.6b4 today, which, as Nick detailed yesterday, provides an untethered jailbreak of iOS 4.2.1 for iPhone 3G, older iPhone 3GS, and non-MC iPod touch 2G, and a tethered JB for the iPhone 3GS (new bootrom), iPhone 4, iPad, iPod touch 2G (MC model), iPod touch 3G and the iPod touch 4G. thanks to a combination of pwnage2 exploit, the arm7_go exploit, 24kpwn, and limera1n. For best results, upgrade to iTunes 10.1 first.

Recent rumors of Foxconn adding new production plants to ramp up production of the iPad have proven to be accurate, as Tuesday morning brings word of the Chinese-based Apple manufacturing partner bringing enormous production facilities online in Chengdu to rapidly accelerate iPad manufacturing. As demand of the tablet increases with each passing day in the beginning rush of this holiday shopping season, it is estimated that Foxconn will be able to successfully turn out an additional 10,000 iPads per day.
Foxconn, of course, has a long history of denying expansion rumors when all signs point to just that. Yet again, the pattern of denials had continued prior to this morning's DigiTimes report spilling the beans that all is on target to make the new Foxconn site "a major supply base starting the first quarter of 2011." The addition of the new facilities will boost monthly iPad production substantially on a monthly basis.

It seems that Apple is having a tough time ironing out all of the bugs in the recent iOS 4.2 update. First, the iPad’s Wi-Fi connection issues that caused a delay in the release of the update and now another bug has popped up. Fortunately, this bug is more of an inconvenience than a real hindrance. Some people have reported music mysteriously disappearing on the iPhone and iPod Touch, right after updating to iOS 4.2. The music still appears on the iOS device when connected to iTunes but does not show up on the device itself. This appears to be a database bug, as the music files are still actually on the iOS device, but you just can’t access them.
Fortunately, the solution to this problem is quite easy. All that is required to fix this bug is to plug in your iOS device and launch iTunes. Then in the sidebar, click the arrow next to your device and select music. Play any song and sync your device again.

Kids in the US as young as six years old are most interested in iPads for Christmas, with iPod touches and game consoles topping their letters to Santa. This is according to a recently-released survey by the Nielsen Company. Older consumers are somewhat less interested in the tablet, focusing on other big-ticket items like computers, TVs and smartphones.
"With Black Friday rapidly approaching, parents may want to get up early Friday morning to find deals," Nielsen said in a press release earlier this week announcing that "a recent survey shows their kids are eyeing some wallet-stretching electronics this holiday season." The report said that the iPad is the most desirable technology product, with 31% of kids in the US aged 6 to 12 said they are interested in "buying" an iPad within the next six months.

Mandatory content ratings were added to Apple's App Store back in iPhone OS 3.0, and now it's Google's turn on news that they'll become obligatory for Android developers "in a few weeks" (at least, those that want their content in the Market). The company teases the fact that they'll be showing the ratings for all apps along with other "Android Market upgrades in the coming weeks" -- presumably timed to coincide with the release of Gingerbread -- and that any dev that fails to specify a rating level for their existing apps will have their content automatically listed as "Mature" (that is, the most restrictive level) until they take care of the problem. In addition to Mature, available ratings will include Pre-teen, Teen, and naturally, an "All" option for apps guaranteed not to offend even the most sensitive of young minds. Definitely good news for parents whose young'uns are demanding Android phones this holiday season, though it's still basically on the honor system for devs to correctly tag their content... and an All-rated app is probably going to sell better than a Mature one for the same reason R-rated movies outsell NC-17 ones. At any rate, sounds like Google intends to evolve the Market pretty rapidly with the next release or two, so we'll have to see how this shakes out.

Microsoft is reporting an 80 per cent rise in the number of registered developers for its windows Phone 7 since September.
With the total number of prospective app and game-makers for the iPhone rival now topping 15,000, the company is convinced WP7 can be a success.
"We're heading into one of the biggest shopping weeks of the year and we're on pace to offer roughly 3,000 apps and games by the end of this week," claimed Microsoft's senior director for Mobile Platform Services Product Management Todd Brix.
"Clearly we're just getting warmed up. The developer community is placing some big bets with Windows Phone this holiday."
However, figures have suggested that Microsoft's new mobile OS (currently split between nine different smartphone models) sold just 40,000 on its US launch day, despite a $100 million marketing campaign.
By contrast, Apple claims to have sold 270,000 iOS devices per day, while Google claims to enjoy 200,000 daily Android sales.

Apple has defeated TinyUmbrella's iPhone 4 baseband protection by implementing a boot level signature check in iOS 4.2.1. It's probably unnecessary to reiterate the warning that's been out there since before the upgrade dropped, but unlockers should really, really avoid upgrading. Meanwhile, MuscleNerd wishes everybody a happy Thanksgiving, and says he thinks the next version of ultrasn0w may be ready, at least for some users, as soon as Sunday.
Adventurous unlockers have already found that if they try to run iOS 4.2.1 on a device with an older baseband, it will show the message "An unknown error has occurred" and go into recovery mode. TinyUmbrella is no longer able to kick iPhones out of recovery for iOS 4.2.1 because the baseband nonce is now checked, just like the SHSH is checked for firmware revs. So at this point there's no way out of that except to install the new baseband...

With iOS 4.2 only a few days old, speculation has already turned to iOS 4.3: specifically, the possibility that we'll see upgraded firmware as soon as mid-December. MacStories is reporting that 4.3 will drop in a few weeks, with bug fixes and an API for app subscriptions to support the new "iPad newspaper" called The Daily.
As we know, iOS 4.2 took longer than Apple had expected: when the WiFi bug in the 4.2 golden master was found, they had to go back to the lab to roll out the 4.2.1 version that was released on Monday. According to MacStories, 4.2 was supposed to be out in the early part of November, preparing the way for 4.3 on all devices that would be able to support billing for apps that you subscribe to, rather than pay for once..

A small PC device company wants to bring thought-controlled apps to the Android market. Mind Technologies (once known by the cute name of Jedi Mind) has promised to make it so. Mind Technologies makes PC devices (a game controller and mouse) that work with the strange-but-true Emotiv headset. Emotive uses brain waves to operate machines. Although it sounds far fetched, electroencephalogram (EEG) controllers do work, but the products on the market so far are not as easy to use, let alone master, as their makers claim.

Now that you've got your Windows Phone 7 device splayed open for USB mass storage use, why not make it friendly to non-Marketplace apps, too? Microsoft's been insistent so far about keeping sideloaded apps out of the equation unless you're a developer, but a new tool called ChevronWP7 -- compatible with Windows XP SP2 and up -- will "unlock" your little beast so that you can install whatever you like without going through the store. Presumably, this'll come in handy for installing stuff Microsoft would never dream of approving -- and it's a whole lot less hacky than an iPhone jailbreak from the looks of it. Have fun and stay safe out there, folks.

Hot on the heels of the release of a utility for bypassing the Windows Marketplace and sideloading your own apps, Microsoft has released a brief statement on the state of the Windows Phone 7 hacking community... and we wouldn't exactly say they're too worked up about it:
"We anticipated that people would attempt to unlock the phones and explore the underlying operating system. We encourage people to use their Windows Phone as supplied by the manufacturer to ensure the best possible user experience. Attempting to unlock a device could void the warranty, disable phone functionality, interrupt access to Windows Phone 7 services or render the phone permanently unusable."
So yeah, we'd say this is more or less a boilerplate quote: "we figured you'd hack this thing, we'd prefer it if you didn't, and here's a laundry list of things that could (but probably won't) happen if you fail to heed our meek warning." Over the long term, we wouldn't be surprised if Redmond ended up playing an Apple-style cat-and-mouse game with these folks, breaking hacks with firmware updates only to have them re-hacked within a few days' time. Considering the lack of spitfire in the statement here, we don't see them coming down too hard unless legitimate, card-carrying, fee-paying developers throw a fit -- and granted, ChevronWP7 stands to make loading pirated apps a breeze, so that could very well happen.

New rumors are swirling about the iPad 2, and they're a bit of a grab bag. The source is the same Economic Daily News paper that made one of the early calls on the first iPad, but also the one that reported in August that there was a 7-inch display being sourced for the iPad's sequel (which Steve Jobs seems to differ with). The new report says that the next iPad will be out in Q1 2011, will have dual cameras, a new display with new touch tech, and a USB port for working with third party devices.
From our own information we know there were actually some last minute revisions on the first iPad that ended up killing the camera and nixing an extra dock connector, so the camera(s) seem a particularly natural "addition" for the iPad 2. We've also heard that a revised screen is happening, though it's unclear if this will be a "Retina Display" or something more minor. On the USB plug front, which could mark a sort of adolescent transition of the iPad into "computer," our source says it's, sadly, very unlikely. We're particularly interested in this mention of a new touchscreen technology from the EDN rumor (perhaps stylus support or pressure sensitivity?) but we don't have anything else to go on there. Overall, it's still hard to tell if the next iPad will be a small update or something more splashy, but it's certainly going to be something.

If you've yet to upgrade your iPad to iOS 4.2.1, and you're head-over-heels with your orientation lock, you've got two options: upgrade and lose that functionality altogether, or upgrade / jailbreak and get it back. Naturally, we'd recommend the latter. In what can only be described as "so typically Apple," the software engineers at Cupertino figured that they'd convert the perfectly acceptable orientation lock switch into a mute switch. We lamented this fact in our review of the update, but rather than Apple creating (non-fiddly) alternatives within its software, we're left to look for a solution in the jailbreaker's app store. NoMute has just emerged under the BigBoss repository in Cydia, promising to reclaim the switch you've already become accustomed to using. It's available now for absolutely nothing, but users are encouraged to cast a wicked glare in Steve's direction as the download ensues.

While millions of holiday shoppers look for the best deals of the year on "Black Friday" today, many prospective iPad buyers have decided to hold off on their first generation tablet on the heels of more reports indicating that the iPad 2 will reach consumers in spring 2011 with a slate of sweet new features. This morning, DigiTimes (citing a report from the Chinese-language Economy Daily News) reveals that sources have "leaked" five new features of the new iPad 2.
Video phone
New display technology (Retina Display?)
3-axis gyroscope (for gaming enhancements)
Better mobility
USB
One of the most exciting potential developments would be the addition of a front facing to the iPad 2, bringing the full FaceTime experience to tablet users. Such a move would be "expected to benefit Apple iPad's webcam suppliers," DigiTimes reports. Additionally, the best we can tell is that the reference to "better...

When Apple announced that AirPlay would be a new feature included in the iOS 4.2 update, many people were eager for its release. However, some were disappointed to learn that only first party apps would be able to stream video. Strangely, Safari is not supported, so internet streaming is not yet possible. AirPlay is capable of streaming video from any app, but Apple chose not to enable it. Fortunately, there’s a jailbreak for that.
Thanks to Erica Sadun over at TUAW, video can now be streamed from any jailbroken iOS 4.2 device using the AirVideoEnabler patch. A single line of code was all that was necessary to enable this feature. With the patch installed, any app can stream video to an Apple TV. For now, the patch is free through Cydia

We'd heard that the Symbian Foundation would undergo some drastic changes as it transitions to a licensing body, and here's number one -- every official Symbian website will be shuttered on the 17th of next month. That goes for every page from symbian.org down to the Symbian Twitter and Facebook feeds, and the source code itself will be shelved. If you want access to any of it, even the databases of user-generated bug reports, you'll have to ask the Foundation for a hard copy and pay a nominal media and shipping fee after January 31st. We're trying to reach Symbian right now to figure out the full repercussions of this move, but assuming Nokia's promise to keep Symbian open-source still rings true, you might want to start stashing away the repositories and setting up mirrors before the Foundation drops off the face of the web -- and perhaps the Symbian crowdsource community, too.

Google is working on a fix to a zero-day flaw discovered by British security expert Thomas Cannon that could lead to user data on a mobile phone or tablet device being exposed to attack. Cannon informed Google before posting information about the flaw on his blog. 'While doing an application security assessment one evening I found a general vulnerability in Android which allows a malicious website to get the contents of any file stored on the SD card,' Cannon wrote. 'It would also be possible to retrieve a limited range of other data and files stored on the phone using this vulnerability.'"
Sophos's Chester Wisniewski adds commentary on how this situation is one of the downsides to Android's increasing fragmentation in the mobile marketplace.

Even with the pre-Christmas buying rush, Microsoft is already desperately offering a new buy one get one free offer similar to the ones they gave for the KIN. According to the article, 'Windows Phone 7 devices can't even manage two per cent of the fortnight's sales.' These aren't official Microsoft figures; they come from online shopping sites. But since Microsoft official sales figures seem subject to manipulation, this is perhaps one of the better guesses we will get at the success of Windows Phone 7 until well into next year. This also strongly backs up other reports of deeply disappointing phone sales. Even Microsoft supporters have been wondering for a while whether it's time for Ballmer to go. If the sales reports are true, then he may be pushed before he jumps.

Have you ever applied for a job at the Apple Store, only to be rejected for some unknown reason? Well, if the CrApple Store blog is any indication, you may have dodged a bullet. CrApple Store is a blog dedicates to shedding light on the inner workings of the retail side Apple. The identity of the blogger is still a mystery, mainly it would seem, because they are still employed at an Apple Store in the UK.
The CrApple Store states, “It began with a list of reasons why working for Apple Retail is f***ing sh**, and just spiralled (sic) out of control. I couldn't keep it inside anymore, and so have decided to share the hate with the rest of the world.†The blog paints a very different picture from what we have come to expect from Apple. CrApple goes on to say what a soul-crushing experience it is to work for Apple and has gripes with other Apple employees such as Specialists and “the holy Genius team.†Apparently

Apple dialed its battle with Android up a notch today by banning an Android magazine app from its App Store, leaving no way for users to install the app on iPads, iPhones and iPod Touches without jailbreaking. The reason for rejection, as given by an Apple rep, was: 'You know... your magazine...It's just about Android.... we can't have that in our App Store.' The bi-monthly publication — the Android counterpart to an iPhone magazine Dixon began putting out earlier this year — launched Nov. 11. 'It's funny really because I don't think we would sell many magazines on Android through Apple App Store,' Dixon told Media Watch. 'But the question is where this is going.' This comes on the heels of Jobs lashing out at Android, calling it fragmented, and its patent attacks on Android.

The DevTeam has released ultrasn0w 1.2 - with a clever feature for those of you who've had an iPhone 3G or 3G[S] with a baseband later than 05.13.04.
Quote:
It turns out that the very first iPad firmware 3.2.2 has baseband version 06.15.00 still vulnerable to AT+XAPP. The iPad baseband is built for the exact same baseband chip as the iPhone3G/3GS — they’re fully compatible!
For many iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G[S] users, you've been stuck at baseband 05.14 or 05.15 and unable to unlock because there is no carrier unlock available for those basebands on those phones. The Dev Team found the iPad baseband is actually a *higher* version number

redsn0w 0.9.6beta4 was just recently announced, and beta5 is now out giving both Windows and OSX users the ability to flash the iPad 06.15 baseband on iPhone3G or iPhone3GS. (why?).
This release jailbreaks iPhone3G, older iPhone3GS, and non-MC iPod touch 2G. It also assists 3G and 3G[S] users with baseband 05.14 or 05.15 who have been stuck without an unlock upgrade their baseband to 06.15 in order to use the new ultrasn0w which was just released. DO NOT DO THIS UNLESS YOU NEED TO. More on that here.
A much upgraded Cydia is also included in this release, which we'll be writing a full story on in the morning - a ton of great improvements thanks to saurik and chpwn.

So you've probably heard there is a new version of Cydia, which is included in the recent tethered jailbreak redsn0w release. We've been testing it and chatting with chpwn and saurik about the differences in it, and thought we'd get a solid list of changes published.
chpwn did a lot of work on many visual tweaks, and as saurik put it "some of my long term performance plans are 'hitting pay dirt', and Cydia is much faster than it was before; that said, it isn't done yet: there's one more thing that I think is going to make a huge difference that isn't even in there yet but should be for the final release." And that's the biggest improvement as far as many are concerned - it's just way faster. Loading the Changes tab in my iPhone 4 is now nearly as quick as the AppStore.
Here's a list of just some of the improvements:
reduced loading changes time
section remapping optimizations
faster reloading data
faster, native search
uses public SDK classes whenever possible
rewritten, faster web views with zooming support
changes badge works again
more stable webviews (no crashes when queueing)
redesigned settings page
redesigned stashing page
faster scrolling of table views
bug fixes
ads no longer break the package views until restart
much better queueing UI
stabler refreshing bar
iPad improvements:
- landscape
- popovesr
- modal views that cover only a portion of the screen
- less annoying errors with bad internet connections downloading packages
- updated section mappings, less typo'd sections
This version of Cydia is included in the recent redsn0w release, but if you're on an iPhone 4 or other already jailbroken device, you can actually install it straight from your iDevice. The absolute easiest way to do so is make sure you have iFile and Safari Download Manager installed, then visit http://apt.saurik.com/cydia/debs/cyd...honeos-arm.deb from your device. Remember where you download it to, and navigate there with iFile afterwards. Tap the deb it and choose install - done!
Cydia is growing up so fast.

Apple certainly loves exclusive deals. Such may once again be the case if a new report out this morning from DigiTimes proves correct. According to information gathered by the publication, a Taiwan-based firm has been tapped to be the exclusive provider of camera lens modules for the iPad 2, which may be ready for mass-market roll out as early as March 2011.
Largan Precision - the supposed camera lens provider in question - isn't dishing many details for now. Largan, however, is believed to be the supplier of the 5-megapixel lens modules for the iPhone 4. While some are assuming that the same camera lens module from the latest iPhone will similarly find a home on the second generation iPad, there is no concrete evidence to suggest how many megapixels the rumored iPad camera will sport.

Chris Walsh -- one of the forces behind the ChevronWP7 app sideload hack for Windows Phone 7 -- went on record earlier this week saying that the first platform update coming early next year would be "massive" with so many improvements and new features that "they could have called it Windows Phone 8." That's a pretty bold statement, and it's been making the rounds so fiercely today that Microsoft felt the need to lay down the law with an official statement -- albeit not a very strongly-worded one:
"Microsoft is committed to delivering regular updates to the Windows Phone experience. Our first update will make copy & paste available in early 2011. In addition to this first update, all Windows Phone 7 users should expect to see additional updates delivered in the future as part of Microsoft's ongoing update process."
So it sounds to us like priority one in Redmond is to get copy and paste up and running (which is basically the message they've been delivering for a while), though we should expect plenty more through future updates. When you figure in the size of the team Microsoft has built for engineering this platform -- and the fact that they've now got the initial retail release out of the way -- we're hoping they've got nothing better to do than to churn on some of these pain points users have identified over the next few months. Should be a heck of a year coming up, eh?
