Why confine your nerdy sloth to your living room, where large robots mime fake guitar and serve you sloppy mixed drinks? Take that zest for the sedentary life with you on the road by having one of your robot ninjas steal this iPhone Rock Band robot from its ingenious creator, Joe Bowers. The Arduino-based device uses ambient light sensors to detect the falling notes and then taps out the music with some conductive foam attached to some squeaky fake fingers. Joe did a fairly detailed write-up, and even uploaded his code, so there's presumably nothing stopping you from actually doing something with your life and building one of these with all that free time you've saved up by hacking your way through all the console-based guitar games. Video is after the break.

[Evow04] has been working hard to run Android on a Meizu M8 smartphone and we’re beginning to enjoy the fruits of his labor. The Meizu M8 is a Chinese cell phone very similar in appearance and hardware to the iPhone. The factory firmware runs Windows CE 6 but there is no official support for Android. It looks like [Evow04's] upgrade method is fairly easy; copy an IMG and BIN file to the root of the phone, backup the Windows CE portion, and then use the upgrade mode to flash the two files.
We’re pretty impressed with Android, especially the potential that it represents. Having another device that runs the OS is a good thing but at $350-$400 this isn’t any cheaper than just buying an Android phone.

I don't want to be one who tries to tell Apple what to do.
And fortunately, I don't have to. A new study published by shopping site Retrevo does it for me. And I think it's safe to say most Apple fans would agree with the consensus presented.
The study, of which a summary was published this morning by eWeek, presents that $600 is the "pricing sweet spot" of the upcoming Apple tablet to help ward off consumer considerations of the ever-popular netbook.

Nokia is to cease support of the N-Gage gaming platform, choosing instead to concentrate on its Ovi Store.
The company will keep the N-Gage site, where users purchase games, and the N-Gage Arena running until September 2010, it announced, after which the community features of purchased games will no longer function. Nokia will stop publishing new games for the format immediately.
"As mobile gaming evolves and begins to encompass social gaming, we want to offer one store front with an even broader portfolio of games - games for everyone," said a company spokesperson, via the N-Gage blog.
"It's much more convenient to have one place to get all your mobile games, and this is what Ovi Store provides."
In the future, Nokia will offer similar community elements incorporated on N-Gage platforms through the Ovi Store, it added. "We understand how important community is to our gamers."
And handsets with the N-Gage application pre-installed will continued to be sold "for some time", however the company will no longer ship devices with the application.
Following the poor sales performance of the original N-Gage handset launched in 2003, Nokia announced, in 2005, it would move the platform's capabilities instead onto a series of smartphones. The full N-Gage service was subsequently made available to the public in April of last year.

In a sign that ebooks are rising in popularity, a recent survey by mobile analytics company Flurry revealed that users may be using the iPhone for more intellectual pursuits, and not just the visual sizzle. The 'book-related' apps on the iPhone overtook games in terms of new apps released. According to the post, 'Book-related apps saw an upsurge in launches in September ... So much so that book-related applications overtook games in the App Store as a percentage of all released apps. The trend isn't an aberration. In October, one out of every five new applications launching on the iPhone was a book ... from August 2008 to the same month in 2009, more apps were released in the 'games' category than any other and, as a result, the iPhone (and iPod touch) became a new handheld gaming platform, one that impacted the Nintendo DS.

Alright, would you look at this, Apple? We know you require your employees to pay in blood for every single button or moving part that makes it onto a shipping product, but would it really kill you to work in some proper Bluetooth keyboard support for the iPhone so we could enjoy the magical freedom of external QWERTY pads if we so choose? Take this particularly stunning KIRF, for example. Sure, you might find the iPhone-miming handset it's paired with offensive, but is there really so much wrong with this flip-out QWERTY action? Do you enjoy our suffering? Please? iTwinge just isn't cutting it

Orange will begin selling the iPhone 3G and 3GS from 7am on 10th November in the UK, the operator has announced.
The handset will be available on monthly and pay-as-you-go tariffs. The iPhone 3GS will be free on all £45 monthly tariffs, while the iPhone 3G will be free on £30 plans - in both cases, users will have to sign up to 24-month contracts.
There's also a high-end 'traveler' option costing £125 a month, which includes roaming call and data allowance. UK data allowance is "unlimited" (although that's unlimited in the limited to "fair usage of 750MB per month" sense).
Meanwhile, Orange will sell the iPhone 3G for £333 on a pay-as-you-go tariff, as long as users top up with £50 when buying the device. They'll get 250MB of data a month as part of that.
Orange has also struck a deal with BT Openzone to give its iPhone users free access to the latter's UK network of Wi-Fi hotspots, matching O2's deal with The Cloud.
Orange will be selling the devices in its 400+ UK stores, as well as online, and through its HMV concessions. The operator will also sell in Apple retail stores, as well as Carphone Warehouse and Phones4U.

N64 emulator soon to be reality?
Zodttd, the developer for the iPhone and iPod Touch most famous for all his emulator such as GBA4iPhone, has announced that he is working on a Nintendo 64 emulator for the iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3rd generation!
He says that Apple’s latest iDevices are finally fast enough for a Nintendo 64 emulator so he has decided to start working on one.
Naturally there are all the doubts about how fast it will play and how you will control the joystick plus all those buttons (such as the Z-button) but regardless, if this comes out it will be simply awesome!
Here is a copy of the original announcement:
Yup, you heard correct. I am currently working on a port of N64 for the iPhone 3gs and iPod Touch 3rd Gen. Why only these two models? Two reasons:
* They’re the fastest Apple handhelds in term of raw CPU performance.
* They both have a faster GPU (Graphic Processing Unit) which allows for OpenGL ES 2.0 specifications.
So yes you may soon see N64 on your favorite Apple device. But I can’t promise it will run games top notch just yet, as things are too early to say. There’s hope though, with a 3D accelerated graphics plugin, as well as an ARM dynarec. If you have a previous generation device, I can use software rendering, but it will slow things down further, along with the slower CPU.
I’m somewhat light on details at the moment due to wanting to balance the hype. Things look good for this project though. Only thing I’m concerned about is currently software based controls. I would like to keep my current software based controls with overlays in use, if possible. And also, if icontrolpad.com finally managed to mass produce and release the controller for your iPhone 3GS, this could become the greatest thing ever!

In this morning's Wall Street Journal, the venerable financial newspaper touched on the study published this weekend by DFC Intelligence that predicts that games for the iPhone and iPod touch will be the" principal drivers for growth in the overall portable and mobile gaming market" within a period of only five years.
Although Apple and its designated spokespeople have always offered the left-hand compliment that portable gaming devices like the DS and PSP are awesome yet strikingly inferior to the iTouch, for example, Apple is yet to truly back up that confidence with an all-out push for mobile gaming dominance. I guess you could say that portable gaming just hasn't been their "thing."
But that will likely change.

GeoHot's decision to take on the iPhone 3.1.2 unlock was criticized for coming after Jody Sanders' offer of $10,000 - especially given that he had previously said he would not work on it. Today, in a scathing post on his blog, GeoHot said that though the unlock will be released on November 4 he was turning down the money, because Sanders "and the rest of the iPhone unlock sites out there are scum."
GeoHot is the pseudonym of 20-year-old George Hotz, the illustrious hacker behind the iPhone jailbreaks

There's no stopping the eternal tug-of-war between the powers that be and the hackers that will, and for the time being it looks like things are back in the hands of the hackers. As of noon today giddy jailbreakers can take the next step and go full-on with blacksn0w, the unlock for the latest 05.11.07 baseband (with tethering enabled to boot). And if that weren't enough, it looks like blackra1n RC3 is alive as well, with Mac and Windows support. What are you waiting for? Hit the read link to get started, if that's your thing. And the battle for the iPhone's immortal soul continues...

Users began grumbling about the 750MB cap on Orange's so-called "unlimited" data plan as soon as it was announced. Close reading of the Terms and Conditions of Orange's service, however, reveals even more restrictions, which poses the question: how many limits can you put on a plan and still call it "unlimited?"
The word "unlimited" in Orange's rate plan listing is followed by an asterisk, which points to a notification that “Fair Usage policy of 750MB/month applies.†Somewhat misleading, but entirely legal in the United Kingdom, where a court ruled last January that a Blackberry data plan with a 250 MB cap could still be called "unlimited."

The App Store is now home to over 100,000 apps, while downloads have surpassed the two billion mark, Apple has announced.
At the end of September, the number of apps stood at 85,000, with over 125,000 developers signed up to Apple's iPhone Developer Programme. A breakdown of category content on the store found that games are by far the most popular type of app available, accounting for 19.6 per cent of the Store's content.
"The App Store, now with over 100,000 applications available, is clearly a major differentiator for millions of iPhone and iPod touch customers around the world," said Apple's senior VP of worldwide product marketing, Philip Schiller. "The iPhone SDK created the first great platform for mobile applications and our customers are loving all of the amazing apps our developers are creating."
"The App Store has forever changed the mobile gaming industry and continues to improve," added Travis Boatman, EA Mobile's VP of worldwide studios. "With a global reach of over 50 million iPhone and iPod touch users, the App Store has allowed us to develop high quality EA games that have been a huge success with customers."
Apple's digital store is now available in 77 countries. A new App Purchase feature recently introduced by the platform holder now allows developers to sell content, subscriptions and digital services directly to users from within their applications.

id Software co-founder John Carmack has made known his ambitions for developing iPhone games, but at the same time revealed that his studio hasn’t quite got the resources to match them.
Carmack, whose longstanding studio was acquired by Zenimax earlier in the year, revealed in a blog post that id will dedicate just two of its whole workforce to full-time iPhone game development.
“Everything is still an experiment for us on the iPhone,†he said, “and we are learning lessons with each product.â€
Carmack revealed that he wants to build a Rage-themed iPhone title to coincide with the release of the PC, PS3 and 360 edition of the game in 2010.
But the studio co-founder explained the studio doesn’t have “a firm direction or team chosen†to work on such a title.
“I was very excited about doing a really-designed-for-the-iPhone first person shooter, but at this point I am positive that I don't have the time available for it,†he added.
“I doubt I will be able to personally open Xcode again for a few months, but I do plan on trying to work out a good touch interface for Quake Classic and the later 6DOF games.
“I also very much want to make at least a tech demo that can run media created with a version of our idTech 5 megatexture content creation pipeline. I'm not sure exactly what game I would like to do with it, so it might be a 500 mb free gee-whiz app...â€

Palm device owners have little to complain about when it comes to webOS; not after enduring Garnet and empty Access promises for so long. Still, that OS which relies so heavily upon web technologies like HTML 5, JavaScript, and CSS can be surprisingly sluggish when compared to other smartphone OSes. Now we have a hint as to why thanks to Palm's Ben Galbraith and Dion Almae who made an interesting admission Tuesday related to the Pre's UI latency compared to the iPhone 3GS -- a phone based on the same ARM architecture. According to the duo, "the path to the GPU didn't exist" in webOS, something that will be solved in the "immediate future" using CSS transforms to modify visual elements thus freeing-up CPU cycles for other tasks. Hmm, immediate future sure sounds like a webOS update to accompany the Palm Pixi release on November 15th.

It's not exactly the native unlock we've been waiting for, but those of you in Europe dying for a Pre unshackled from O2 will be happy to know that the Rebel Simcard II is now compatible with Palm's first webOS device. The £10.99 / $17.95 accessory card slots in between your carrier's SIM and the Pre's SIM slot, bypassing the Pre's network locks and allowing full access to voice and data services including 3G. Sadly, the Pre doesn't have the radio support to make this work in the States on anything but EDGE, but at least it's a start, right? Video after the break.

Guinness, Nike, Pepsi, Tesco, Disney, Volkswagen and Starbucks are among the many big brands who have launched their own iPhone apps in the last two months alone.
A rundown of recent App Store releases on sister site ME reveals that not only are these brands focusing almost exclusively on iPhone, but that they're making use of key platform features like GPS, connectivity, social networking and in-app payments.
By contrast, rival App Stores like Android Market, BlackBerry App World and Ovi Store are looking decidedly light on these kinds of apps, despite theoretically offering a much larger audience.
Their challenge right now is to seize back mindshare from Apple among the big brands, not to mention correcting some of the problems that have stopped brands from venturing beyond the App Store.

Fortune magazine compares Apple CEO to Henry Ford and Juan Trippe
Steve Jobs – the face of Apple, who spearheaded the firm’s push into the MP3 player and mobile phone sectors – has been voted CEO of the decade by Fortune magazine.
"Remaking any one business is a career-defining achievement; four is unheard-of,†read Fortune’s tribute to the Apple CEO.
"In the past 10 years alone [Jobs] has radically and lucratively reordered three markets – music, movies, and mobile telephones,†read the report, “and his impact on his original industry, computing, has only grown.
The tribute to Jobs compares his achievements to pioneers in other industries, such as Henry Ford establishing the auto industry and Juan Trippe inventing the global airline.
Fortune claimed that such entrepreneurs pioneered in a market that had no real competition and no leader.
“The industries that Jobs has turned topsy-turvy already existed when he focused on them," the publication said.

So says research firm FADE. But nobody's making a fortune yet
The launch of the HTC Hero handset, as well as improvements to the Android Market, led to a 53% rise in Android games revenues in October, claims FADE.
The company's research indicates that Google's app store generated around $180,000 of revenues from game sales in October.
Is anyone making a fortune? Not yet. FADE estimates that the top-selling Android game, Lupis Labs' Robo Defense, sold 7,600 units during October at a $2.99 price point - just over $22,700 in revenue.
FADE claims that in the seven months since paid apps were introduced on Android Market, games firms have made a total of $850,000. However, it predicts that November will see sales jump 50% to $270,000 for that month alone, buoyed by more handset

You know that smartphone you love, that ultimate expression of handheld convergence that some would call a mobile computer? It's crap. Or so says octogenarian, Martin Cooper, former lead engineer at Motorola said to have invented the handheld cellphone -- really, his name is on the "Radio telephone system" patent and he's credited with making the very first private handheld cellphone call from a busy New York City street on April 3rd, 1973. Well Marty doesn't like those newfangled handsets. In fact, according to our sterling Mr. Cooper, "Our future I think is a number of specialist devices that focus on one thing that will improve our lives." Words uttered this week during a conference in Madrid. Imagine it: a future where we carry a portable radio, film camera, wind-up watch, Kaypro luggable computer, HP calculator, and Atari handheld... oh wait, that was the eighties.

Currently, mobile entrepreneurs wishing to hawk their wares on the Pre (or Pixi, or unnamed webOS device of the future) use a software development kit from Palm called Mojo, a stack of Java-based tools that must be installed, studied, understood, loved, and respected before serious development can get underway. Palm sees that as a barrier of entry for web-oriented developers who want to make the leap to mobile apps, though, which is why they've crafted a new SDK called Ares that's based entirely on web technologies -- in fact, there's no install at all, apparently. Much of the interface is said to be drag-and-drop with enough JavaScript exposed to make your local .com designer feel right at home, potentially opening the app landscape to a whole new set of folks -- and considering that the App Catalog is tens of thousands of goodies behind the App Store and Android Market, they can use every loyal dev they get.

The fact the iPhone is a veritable wild west for developers can often be a good thing. Then again, when shadier outfits start releasing shadier apps, it can also be a bad thing.
Take iPhone game developer Storm8, for example. A class action lawsuit filed in San Francisco alleges that the company, who are behind iPhone games like World War, iMobsters and Vampires Live, "has written the software for all its games in such a way that it automatically accesses, collects, and transmits the wireless telephone number of each iPhone user who downloads any Storm8 game".
Apparently this number-farming went unannounced until August, when Storm8 finally fessed up, saying it was a"bug". Michael Turner, the man filing the suit, says "poppycock" to that, and is after damages.

A new patent application revealed this week shows future Apple plans for an online service that would allow users to sync multiple devices - such as Macs, iPhones, and Apple TVs - making not just files but also live application states portable and accessible wherever they go. The patent may give new clues to the purpose of the massive $1 billion data center Apple is building in North Carolina.
The filing with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, dated September 30, 2008, was revealed in a story on AppleInsider today. It describes a system that lets a user sync both personal files and live projects in their applications, so that one could literally pick up where one left off, moving from home computer to iPhone to work

Einar Rosenberg, Chief Technology Officer of Narian Technologies, is being widely quoted today about speculation that Apple is currently tinkering with a radio-frequency identification (RFID) chip for possible inclusion in the next generation iPhone.
Quote:
Had to share this news. A highly reliable source has informed me that Apple has built some prototypes of the next gen iPhone with an RFID reader built in and they have seen it in action. So its not full NFC but its a start for real service discovery and I'm told that the reaction was very positive that we can expect this in the next gen iPhone.

Apple is officially in the market for a new top cop on their jailbreak police force. With the booming business that is jailbreaking only growing bigger by the day, Apple is planning to seriously crack down on the ease with which hackers exploit the iPhone platform and modify their devices' operating systems.
And Apple isn't making any secret of its intentions. In fact, a new position is posted for all to see on the company's website. They are hoping in the very near future to fill the position of "iPhone OS Platform Security Manager" - aka, a jailbreak cop.
Apple Insider reports that "The company is looking for someone to oversee its team which ensures secure booting and installation of the iPhone OS and protecting and hardening it against outside threats."

So we knew a select number of authorized resellers would start stocking iPhones soon, and thanks to a tipster, it looks like we might be getting a glimpse at a none-too-surprising recipient of the new order. As these pics from an anonymous tipster show, "big hug for your mobile life" retailer The Shack will be getting AT&T's flagship device soon, with a letter supposedly from EVP of store operations Bryan Bevin (found after the break) adding that the 3G and 3GS rollout will begin this month at some company-owned locations in the Dallas Forth Worth and New York City areas, with a nationwide rollout in 2010. Not that you necessarily needed more places to tempt you with the device, but it's always fun to have options.

Perhaps the reason Apple seems to be the only one dragging its feet on developing the run-away popularity of gaming on the iPhone and iPod Touch is because, as some suspected, Apple doesn't really like the idea of their Juggernaut mobile devices becoming dominant platforms for mobile video gaming.
Over time, subtle hints are being dropped by those working closely with Apple that the folks in Cupertino are becoming increasingly more irritated by the references to Apple's iPhone/iPhone as popular gaming systems.

Users of jailbroken iPhones in Australia are reporting that their wallpapers have been changed by a worm to an image of '80s pop icon Rick Astley. This is the first time a worm has been reported in the wild for the Apple iPhone. According to a report by Sophos, the worm, which exploits users who have installed SSH and not changed the default password, hunts for other vulnerable iPhones and infects them. Users are advised to properly secure their jailbroken iPhones with a non-default password, and Sophos says the worm is not harmless, despite its graffiti-like payload: 'Accessing someone else's computing device and changing their data without permission is an offense in many countries — and just as with graffiti there is a cost involved in cleaning-up affected iPhones. ... Other inquisitive hackers may also be tempted to experiment once they read about the world's first iPhone worm. Furthermore, a more malicious hacker could take the code written by ikee and adapt it to have a more sinister payload.'

The long-running god-sim series The Settlers has come to iPhone, with a rather sudden release only a few days after the game was announced. Concerned with the minute details of bread making and ironmongery as much as with the larger issues of economy, combat and land ownership, The Settlers' outing on the Apple device takes players to a picturesque, gentle world that has always played host to this cult series.
Priced at £2.99 and available as of today, The Settlers allows users to gather resources, build stocks and go to battle, and with three nations to govern and defeat, it offers a surprisingly sizable and intricate challenge in the same vein as Sim City and Populous.
Developed by German studio Blue Byte, which has handled the Settlers series since its inception in 1994, the title recently enjoyed release on the DS and mobile to a rather underwhelmed response. However, in CasualGaming.biz's brief experience of the iPhone game, it has been significantly improved for the popular gadget.
As revealed by Pocket Gamer, the game was only confirmed to be on the way on October 5th, but already publisher Gameloft has made the title available.
Surprisingly simple despite some genuine depth, like its forerunners The Settlers on iPhone is brimming with character and bustles with activity, and stands out as an ambitious and potentially popular game on a system somewhat lacking in god games despite its touch screen interface.

O2 will allow its customers to unlock their iPhones after their current contracts expire, according to Matthew Key, chairman and CEO of O2's parent company, Telefónica.
In an interview held as part of Times Online's "Ask the Boss" feature, Key left open the question of whether O2 would unlock the phones for their customers, or merely not object if they chose to do so:
Quote:
Once the iPhone becomes available on other UK networks, we will allow O2 customers to unlock their iPhones, although of course they will still need to honor any outstanding contract period they have. At the end of their contract period, they are entirely

iBiquity Digital, the company behind HD Radio, has finally released the first digital radio solution for the iPhone. It requires a Gigaware HD Radio Tuner, which costs $80 through Radio Shack, and uses your earphone cord as an antenna.
HD radio uses a digital signal piggybacked onto existing analog broadcasts, allowing high-quality sound and song metadata (artist, track and album). There are nearly 2000 stations in the US are already broadcasting a digital HD Radio signal. The Gigaware tuner, like all HD Radio receivers, can pick up both the digital and analog stations, so you can get regular AM and FM along with the HD broadcasts.
Bob Struble, the head of iBiquity, told the Wall Street Journal that the relatively high cost of the HD tuner is offset by the fact that digital signal can often be picked up in areas where there is not WiFi or 3G signal for...

Pay-TV provider BSkyB is to show live Premier League matches on Apple's iPhone.
Users can watch live sports on Sky Sports and ESPN as well as Sky News over a wi-fi connection for £6 a month.
Besides the Premier League, users can also watch Scottish football, cricket and golf via Sky's new application.
BSkyB, which is 39%-owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp, has been launching applications for news and sports to try to expand its reach on mobile devices.
To watch sports on a normal television, Sky charges from £26.50 a month for Sky Sports 1 or 2, or £35 for its total sports package - excluding ESPN.
Sky Mobile TV, the latest application, is free to download.
"Our new Sky Mobile TV app combines the demand for great live TV on the move with the high quality viewing experience offered by iPhone and iPod touch," said David Gibbs, Sky's mobile general manager.
Sky says there have been 2 million downloads of Sky applications on the iPhone to date, including Sky Sports and Sky Sports Football Score Centre.
Other users have been able to watch Sky Mobile TV on other mobile phones over the 3G network from several mobile phone companies.
In September, both Orange and Vodafone announced that they would be offering the iPhone, expanding its reach as O2's exclusive contract expires.

The Apple iPhone approval process has been a source of pain and suffering for many developers but few as had a torrid and protracted a struggle as Manomio. But the effort has seemingly paid off with news that its Commodore 64 Emulator is once again back on the App Store.
In June the app was initially denied a place on the download service as Apple stated that “an Application may not itself install or launch other executable code by any means, including without limitation through the use of a plug-in architecture, calling other frameworks, other APIs or otherwiseâ€.
Just weeks later and after a resubmission, however, the emulator was given the thumbs up – only for Apple to remove it after it was discovered that it was possible to hack the app to access the Commodore 64 BASIC code that runs it.
Not one to be knocked back by rejection, however, Manomio revisited its coding and a new version of the software is now live and ready to download from the App Store.
The new version claims to boast a 30 per cent performance improvement over the initial release and also includes three brand new games – International Basketball, International Baseball, and International Tennis.
Also bundled in with the download is the app’s original software roster – Dragons Den, Le Mans, International Basketball, International Soccer, International Tennis, Jupiter Lander, Arctic Shipwreck and Jack Attack.

However, it predicts that November will see sales jump 50% to $270,000 for that month alone, buoyed by more handset launches.
Its full chart of the top ten revenue-generating Android games can be found here.

GeoHot has declared the blacksn0w/blackra1n WiFi bug "closed," saying that after his investigation he believes it to be a problem with the iPhone firmware itself, rather than his work. On Twitter today, he made a statement suggesting he could fix the bug for $10,000. Most observers, though, are interpreting this as a tongue-in-cheek offer coming as it does in the wake of his smackdown of Jody Sanders' offer of $10,000 for the 3.1.2 baseband unlock.

British satellite TV purveyor Sky has been pushing hard lately to expand into new spheres, a desire marked most clearly by its Sky Player integration with the Xbox 360 Dashboard. Now the company is keeping momentum going with the Sky Mobile TV app for the iPhone. The app itself will come free, but live streaming access to the full selection of Sky news and sports (ESPN included) channels will set you back £6 ($10) a month. That's pretty reasonable value if you're into live Premier League matches, which are typically the highest ticket item on a British TV subscription bill. O2 has sweetened that deal even further by offering a full quarter of a year's worth of free access -- a clear response to Orange's infraction on its iPhone turf. You can only stream via WiFi for now, but you have to agree that, at this price point, it's a definite step in the right direction.

Well, we all knew this was coming.
The Macintosh security firm Intego reports that they have identified malware that will allow hackers to access data on jailbroken iPhones running OpenSSH with the default root password 'alpine.' Unjailbroken iPhones, devices not running sshd, and devices with unique root passwords are not vulnerable to this exploit. Though Intego currently categorizes the risk of the malware as "low," users should act to secure their phones.
The tool - which Intego identifies as "iPhone/Privacy.A" - works by being installed onto a "Mac, PC, Unix or Linux" computer - or another iPhone - and then scanning the computer's network to find ssh services.

Apple, Inc. overtook Nokia in the September quarter as the cellphone maker generating the highest total operating profit in the industry, according to a report by research firm Strategy Analytics.
The Finnish handset maker is still the world's largest by volume. Apple sold 7.4 million iPhones during the July-September quarter, generating sales of $4.5 billion. Nokia sold 108.5 million phones in total in the same quarter, with sales of €6.9 billion ($10.36 billion). When measured by profits, however, Nokia lost in the third quarter against Apple. While Apple does not release profits for its specific product lines, Strategy Analytics estimated Apple's profit on the iPhone at $1.6 billion in the third quarter, compared with Nokia's $1.1 billion. Analyst Alex Spector said:

3Q09 figures from Gartner place the iPhone maker within touching distance of RIM as Nokia flags
The seven million iPhones sold by Apple in 3Q09 earned it a 17.1 per cent share of the global smartphone market, according to Gartner.
The research says that iPhone's average selling price (ASP) is holding steady and states that sales in the fourth quarter should be even stronger as Apple starts selling in China, an additional carrier in the UK (Orange), and in an additional 16 countries.
Meanwhile, Nokia’s share of the smartphone market reached an all time low in the 3Q09 at 39 per cent, compared with 45 per cent in 2Q09. This caused the Symbian OS to lose ground too, while Research In Motion reached 20 per cent share, its highest yet.
Gartner says RIM’s sales rested on the Curve 8900 in Europe and the Tour and Storm 2 with Verizon Wireless in the US.
Gartner says the overall mobile handset market return to growth in 3Q09

Nokia has announced that its Nokia Music desktop application is being rebranded as Nokia Ovi Player, continuing the company's consolidation of its services under the Ovi name.
"Ovi Player is not a ground-up rebuild of Nokia Music, but it does contain some new features that will make it even easier to use," blogs Nokia Music product manager Mark Wheatley.
Those new features include navigation changes, redesigned controls, and tweaks to the interface when accessing the Nokia Music Store through the application.
Meanwihle, Ovi Player is the first version of the application to fully support the Windows 7 operating system.
We wonder if rebranding the app to Ovi Player leaves scope for other kinds of content to be accessed through it - videos and movies for example, or even games.

We've been around this rumor pretty much since Palm started looking competitive again, so take it for what you will -- but a bunch of fat cats down on Wall Street have been going ape today over renewed "chatter" that Nokia might be taking an interest in acquiring Palm. Palm's share prices are up well over 5 percent on the day, though we wouldn't be the least bit surprised if there was some behind-the-scenes manipulation going on here -- an acquisition would make less sense now than ever with suitors on the hook for $2 billion or more, a hefty sum even for a giant like Nokia, never mind the fact that they've still got two smartphone platforms of their own in the mix. Licensing webOS is being floated as a possible alternative to an outright Palm purchase -- but we're having such an exceedingly difficult time picturing a 5800 running webOS that we'll put this one on ice until we get the joint press release.

Stephen Williams reports in the NY Times that the app recreating some of the Commodore's seminal retro games, including Le Mans, Dragons Den and Jupiter Lander, has been re-issued after being pulled in September. The app features SID sound emulation, auto-save to continue where you left off, and a realistic joystick with a beautifully crafted C64 keyboard. Apple originally rejected the program for violating the SDK agreement, which dictates that 'no interpreted code may be downloaded and used in an Application except for code that is interpreted and run by Apple's Published APIs and built-in interpreter(s).' After disabling the controversial feature, Apple published the app in September, but days later it was pulled and the developer was asked to remove, rather than just disable, the BASIC interpreter from the program, which would have allowed unscrupulous users to run unlicensed, emulated code on the iPhone or iPod Touch. 'The road was bumpy, but we remained persistent and made the changes Apple was looking for. Ultimately, BASIC has been removed for this release; however, we hope that working with Apple further will allow us to re-enable it,' the company wrote on its blog.

webOS 1.3.1 was always destined to come right around the launch of the Pixi, but it's surprised us by showing its face early. No app catalog bombshells here, but there are a slew of more minor fixes and updates that should make users experience a great deal smoother. Is this the update that finally unlocks access to the GPU and provides the speed boost Pre owners are waiting for / advances the iTunes chess match another step? We'll let you know once our unit reboots, for now here are a few highlights from Palm's list of changes:
Update: Downloaded, applied and rebooted. iTunes still isn't spotting our Pre as a device to sync with, and at least for the moment there's no great speed increases to speak of, but we have noticed a few more key tweaks that owners are sure to like -- setting a specific ringtone for text messages is exactly what we've been looking for.
Yahoo! now appears as a Calendar/Contacts/instant messaging synchronization account.
You can forward a text or multimedia message by tapping the message > Forward.
A new option is available for restarting the phone: press and hold power > Power > Restart. The prior restart method (Device Info > Reset Options > Restart) is still available.
Widescreen videos (including YouTube) now display in widescreen mode on the phone by default, instead of being cropped.
If you tap to play a YouTube video embedded on a web page, the YouTube application launches and the video plays in the app.
You can select a unique ringtone for new message alerts: Open Messaging > application menu > Preferences & Accounts > Sound > Ringtone.
While listening to a song with album art displayed, you can tap the screen below the art to display a playback slider. Dragging the slider jumps forward or backward in the song.

A NASA scientist has come up with a working prototype of chemical-sniffing circuitry as a test of technology that could one day become standard equipment on cell phones in the US. The sensing device attaches to the bottom of an iPhone and uses the data connection to collect, process and report the results.
Jing Li, a physical scientist at NASA's Ames Research Center in California developed this prototype as a proof of concept of new technology that would bring compact, low-cost, low-power, high-speed nanosensor-based chemical sensing capabilities to cell phones. Li worked with other researchers under a grant from the "Cell-All" program of the US Department of Homeland Security to develop tools that would better enable the government to quickly respond in case of a chemical release or terror attack.

It makes sense to release your mostly-theoretical (so far, anyway) desktop OS-based slider handset with the world's newest and best version of Windows, but it when your slider handset is dubbed "xpPhone" things become a bit more muddled. But that's the word from Pocketables, who's been in touch with ITG and learned that the MID / phone will not only ship with a Windows 7 option, but also be available in 4.3-inch, 4.8-inch and 7-inch screen sizes. There's also rumors of price ranging from $500 to $700, but what we'd really like at this point is a bit of a demo of this thing in action -- especially now that there's a similar ViewSonic-branded device breathing down its neck.

We've been pretty skeptical of OnLive's many futuristic promises. From streaming every game ever to anything with a decent internet connection, to being able to end world hunger (okay, we made up that second one), it's kind of an enormous leap to be taking from our current standards. In an effort to keep us on our toes, the company just this week announced that not only can the service stream games to households, but also to cell phones. "Today, at a Wedbush financial conference in New York I showed OnLive running simultaneously on two iPhones, a TV, and a computer," said CEO Steve Perlman.
"It's important to understand that a cell phone is a very different beast than TV, PC or Mac ... currently, games on OnLive are tuned for TVs and computers, so initially, it's the Community and Social elements of OnLive that we're most excited about on mobile devices." OTOY has already proven that mobile gaming of this level can exist, but we're still not convinced anyone wants to play the full console/PC version of games on their phone. Impressive? Sure. Functional? That has yet to be seen.

Apple has filed a patent that forces users to interact with an ad. FTFA: "Its distinctive feature is a design that doesn’t simply invite a user to pay attention to an ad — it also compels attention. The technology can freeze the device until the user clicks a button or answers a test question to demonstrate that he or she has dutifully noticed the commercial message. Because this technology would be embedded in the innermost core of the device, the ads could appear on the screen at any time, no matter what one is doing.""
We've been following this story for awhile now but it seems to have broken into the mainstream.

Hi there,
I would like to introduce my first iPhone app - Fit or Fugly, that has just been released. Fit or Fugly is intended to bring more fun than practical usefullness, though it utilizes a science-based approach to measuring attractiveness of a human face. Hope it will be enjoyed by iPhone and iPod users!
Here are a couple of Fit or Fugly screenshots:

Description:
For centuries men and women have done their upmost to make themselves as attractive as possible to the opposite sex but up until now there was no way of determining how attractive a face actually is.
Now you can scientifically calculate how 'Fit or Fugly' your face or any other face that you care to photograph. This application utilises Fibonnaci's golden ratio which is based on symmetries via key anchor points on a human face which is the eyes, ears, chin, mouth and nose. Symmetry is accepted as the base of attractiveness.
So, either boost your confidence by discovering you are truly fit, or if the news is bad and you are fugly you can make the necessary changes to you appearance and lifestyle which may improve your attractiveness!
*** Fit or Fugly can be used anywhere; ***
- From the privacy of your bedroom
- To break the ice at dinner parties
- To liven up an otherwise dull day at work or school
- Supporting your rational to ending a relationship
- As a reason to declining an invitation to date
- To simply measure you and your friends
- Cracking banter with your mates
There are no limits to the use of Fit or Fugly as it is equally effective on human faces irrespective of ethnicity, colour, age or race. It has even been known to work on pets.

Don't be fooled by that background: this Menq EasyPC E790 is only using Windows CE 5.0 for the sake of this hands-on. The successor to the $89 E760 we saw last year still sports a Samsung ARM processor, bumps the 7-inch display's resolution to 800 x 480, and at least as far as this Techvideoblog video hands-on shows, can do a decent (albeit not great) job of handling DivX files, Skype, and browsing. There's a promise from the manufacturer that Android is coming sometime in the next month, but honestly, given what we've seen before, we'd be happy to stick with Windows CE. Of course, the big selling point here is the price, and that claimed $80 is quite the looker. Video after the break.

After months of the tech press and blogosphere spreading every type of rumor about the still-unconfirmed Apple tablet, CNN has gotten into the action. Referring to it as "a magazine-sized, touch-screen, hand-held, all-in-one device that is half-iPhone, half-Macintosh computer," CNNMoney.com highlighted the device in a post today. They talked to a panel of experts who basically recapped the rumors to date, with one significant new speculation: "stunning graphics," better than the iPod or iPhone, and a webcam for videoconferencing.
The story -subheadlined "the everything killer" - made much of how the tablet was being positioned to replace many different handheld devices now in use. According to the analysts surveyed: Laura DiDio, principal analyst at ITIC; David Wertheimer, executive director of the University of Southern California's Entertainment Technology Center; and Zeus Kerravala, an analyst with Yankee Group, the device is being prepared to fill the gap between the iPhone/iPod...

Not another run of the mill Android-powered device, but an Android handset actually built by the web giant
The interweb is alive with rumours that Google is working on its own Android mega-phone, which could see the light of day early next year.
There's lots of conjecture, but the source of the latest rumour was TechCrunch, which reported yesterday that the device is in development as Google seeks to create the ultimate incarnation of everything Android.
In terms of manufacturing partners for Google, the favourite appears to be LG, with the device expected to be made available on a direct-to-consumer basis (i.e. no operator exclusivity).

Pirated iPhone apps could account for over 60 per cent of the market, according to data from analytic company Pinch Media.
And these pirated apps result in a sustained, incremental loss to developers as they pay the costs to provide dynamic content and servers for those unmonetised consumers, says Pinch's CEO Greg Yardley.
"What we've determined is that over 60 per cent of iPhone applications have definitely been pirated based on our checks," Yardley said, talking to Gamasutra. He added though the number could be higher since pirates occasionally disable the tracking tools.
"What developers lose is not necessarily the sale because I don't believe pirates would have bought the game if they hadn't stolen it. But when there is a back-end infrastructure associated with a game, that is an ongoing incremental cost that becomes a straight loss for the developer.
"Many developers run servers to provide content dynamically, they run high-score servers, and that sort of thing costs money. If your application is pirated, you quickly find that cutting steeply into your profit margin, especially given the low price point of iPhone games."
According to Yardley, developers tend not to pay more than 10 per cent of earnings on a game's back-end infrastructure but, even so, a pirated game can be used many times by multiple pirates, "so your losses are multiplied many times over as well."
Pinch Media provides analytic tools to iPhone developers that are used in approximately 8 per cent of the app market.

Apple may have taken the lightest of light-touch approaches to the iPhone’s mushrooming game market, but new indications suggest that the firm is about to make its own game software with an internal team.
An Apple job posting reveals that the firm is looking for a game software engineer, one who “wants to work as part of a small highly motivated team to work on interactive multimedia experiences on the iPhone and iPod Touchâ€.
The company’s small team wants a creative skilled engineer that already has about 3 years of development experience under their belt.
The move could be seen as Apple’s first serious bid to dominate the nascent yet lucrative App Store.
In September Apple revealed that there were as many as 21,178 games available on the App Store, a number amassed within just fourteen months after the online portal launched.
Steve Jobs, in a recent interview, spoke of how important games were in Apple’s aim to promote the iPod Touch.
“Originally, we weren't exactly sure how to market the Touch. Was it an iPhone without the phone? Was it a pocket computer? What happened was, what customers told us was, they started to see it as a game machine," he told The New York Times. "We started to market it that way, and it just took off."
But the success of the App Store has left some developers frustrated; with an increasing number of developers and games on board, many are finding it hard to be discovered.
The App store model was initially praised by studios for how it removed publishers from the equation, giving creatives the chance to earn a better share of sales, meaning that they could, in turn, take more risks and be more imaginative.
That utopian vision was hardly fulfilled, with the likes of Fieldrunners rubbing shoulders with trashy topical pieces, and both struggling to stand out in a vast crowd. Now, in an ironic twist, there is talk of developers seeking the help of publishers on the App Store to promote their work.
But the marketing sway of Apple itself, and indeed the aura of style that surrounds the company, may be all a game will need to sell vast volumes on the App Store. If Apple begins to roll out its own titles, such publicity is guaranteed.

Greg Yardley, an analyst for US firm Pinch Media, reckons that over 60 per cent of iPhone apps have been pirated. The conclusion is drawn from data obtained by Pinch media’s own software, which is designed to help developers track the performance of their software on the App Store.
“What we've determined is that over 60 per cent of iPhone applications have definitively been pirated based on our checks,†Yardley told Gamasutra. “The number is probably higher than that.
“What developers lose is not necessarily the sale because I don't believe pirates would have bought the game if they hadn't stolen it. But when there is a back-end infrastructure associated with a game, that is an ongoing incremental cost that becomes a straight loss for the developer.
“Many developers run servers to provide content dynamically, they run high-score servers, and that sort of thing costs money. If your application is pirated, you quickly find that cutting steeply into your profit margin, especially given the low price point of iPhone games.â€

Facebook's Joe Hewitt, Second Gear's Justin Williams, the long-time Mac software developer known as 'Rogue Amoeba' and other respected App Store developers have recently decided to discontinue their work on the platform, citing their frustration with Apple's opaque approval process. Continued issues with erroneous and snap rejections of applications and APIs are prompting more and more developers to shun the platform entirely. Though there are tens of thousands of other developers who have pumped out over 100,000 apps for the platform, continued migration away from iPhone development will most likely result in lower quality software

Man, the Pixi has a tough life. For starters, it launches at a price point that simply makes no sense when you consider that the Pre could be had for the exact same price via third-party channels. Next, Palm's second-ever webOS device falls to just $25 on contract, making it worth a glance once more. Nary two days later, Amazon has chopped the price of the Pre to just $79.99 with a 2-year contract, and to boot the $36 activation fee is being waived. We always heard sibling rivalries were the worst -- guess mum wasn't kidding around

After a long wait in Apple-approval limbo, Trillian for iPhone is now available for purchase on the App Store. The makers of the slick multiservice IM client waited three months, with no word up or down from Apple, before the okay came through yesterday.
While chat windows somewhat evoke the look and feel of Messages, the functionality far outstrips what comes in Apple's standard SMS client. The iPhone version, like the popular desktop program, allows for multiple IM connections to be managed and used in a single app. Unlike the desktop version, though, all connections are handled through Trillian's Astra network. Trillian for iPhone is always connected to the Astra server, which allows instant sync between different clients running on different platforms. If you change your avatar or display name on your iPhone, for example, the change is immediately propagated to your Windows client as well as..

An article on 9to5mac yesterday has a lot of people talking today, as the prospect of a new Mac attack from phishers allegedly looms on the horizon. Although Macs have a mostly pristine imagine for being resistant to virus attacks, phishers are slowly and steadily taking aim at Apple products.
Quote:
We received word this morning of what could be a brand new phishing attack that’s in circulation at present - an email which purports to relate to a recent Apple retail transaction and asks for details of any recent orders. The email (image above) also carries a stuffed file. This contains an ‘exe’ file which will only launch on a Windows machine, as with all such phishing trips

Long-awaited device rumoured to be revealed in the new year
Apple is said to be planning a launch event for its tablet on January 19th, following a lukewarm response to the firm’s holiday line-up.
Many Apple fans were disappointed in September when the firm announced its redesigned iPods and a new version of iTunes, with no mention of the long-awaited touchscreen tablet.
“Apparently Apple has pencilled in an event for the [San Francisco] Moscone Center on January 19th 2010, but is yet to be confirmed,†Robert Peckham wrote in a blog for PCR. “Apple has traditionally launched significant products in January – both the MacBook Air and AppleTV were launched in January 2008.â€
According to Peckham, rumoured names for the device include iPad, MacPad and Macbook Touch.

If you think the iPhone app store is the only mobile game store suffering an exodus, some game publishers claim Android's app store isn't much better, for a different reason — it doesn't generate much revenue. In fact, French game developer Gameloft (which owes 13% of its profits to iPhone game sales), said, 'We have significantly cut our investment in Android platform, just like... many others. It is not as neatly done as on the iPhone. Google has not been very good to entice customers to actually buy products. On Android nobody is making significant revenue. We are selling 400 times more games on iPhone than on Android.' So the trade-off seems to be more sales but an annoying approval process, versus a lack of sales promotions and no annoyance around approval. It seems that those in it for money will opt for iPhone, and those in it for distribution will opt for Android. Or maybe someone will get it right one of these days?

Many game developers don't think of the iPhone as being a system which has extensive game piracy. But recent comments by developers and analysts have shown otherwise, and Gamasutra speaks to multiple parties to evaluate the size of the problem and whether there's anything that can be done about it. Quoting: 'Greg Yardley confirms that getting ripped off by pirates is the rule rather than the exception. Yardley is co-founder and CEO of Manhattan-based Pinch Media, a company that provides analytic software for iPhone games. ... "What we've determined is that over 60% of iPhone applications have definitively been pirated based on our checks," he reveals, "and the number is probably higher than that." While it's impossible to estimate how much money developers are losing, it involves more than the price of the game, he says. "What developers lose is not necessarily the sale," he explains, "because I don't believe pirates would have bought the game if they hadn't stolen it. After the ikee worm that displayed a picture of Rick Astley on jailbroken iPhones, the first malicious iPhone worm (Google translation; original, in Dutch) has now been discovered in the wild. Internet provider XS4ALL in the Netherlands encountered several of such devices (link in Dutch) on the wireless networks of their customers and put out a warning. After obtaining a copy of the malware it was discovered that the jailbroken phones, which are exploited through openSSH with a default password, scan IP ranges of mobile internet providers for other vulnerable iPhones, phone home to a C&C botnet server, are able to update themselves with additional malware and have the ability to dump the SMS database as well. Owners of a jailbroken iPhone with a default root password are advised to flash to the latest Apple firmware in order to ensure no malware is present

According to a story in Computerworld, plaintiffs in a lawsuit against Apple going back to October 2007 asked the judge on Wednesday to order the company to release the source code to iPhone firmware update 1.1.1. The plaintiffs claim that the update was specifically designed to "brick," or render inoperable, any iPhone that had been unlocked.
The lawsuit alleges that Apple and AT&T violated state and federal antitrust laws by entering into a multi-year exclusive contract naming AT&T as the sole carrier in the United States, and preventing users from being able to unlock their phones

9to5Mac has picked up on reports this morning that the elusive iPod Touch with a built-in video camera may ship as early as this spring. While some (like myself) are saying they'll only believe it when they see it, even if we do "see it," will we want to if the rumor is true? Here's what I mean:
Quote:
“The iPod touch 3G with camera will allegedly have the same camera as the updated iPod nano, which shoots video, but not still pictures. Although the video quality on the nano is good for a portable device, it can't compare with the video quality of the iPhone

Google has not been very good to entice customers to actually buy products,’ claims finance director
Leading mobile game developer Gameloft will significantly decrease investment in Android supported games.
The Paris-headquartered mobile game developer went on to claim that – unlike Apple’s iPhone – no company is making significant money from Google’s mobile platform.
“We are selling 400 times more games on iPhone than on Android,†said Gameloft finance director Alexandre de Rochefort.
Speaking at a company investor conference, de Rochefort said: "We have significantly cut our investment in Android platform, just like many others.â€
Gameloft’s move will place further doubt on the financial incentive for Android game development, with the announcement made days after RIM's director of developer relations Mike Kirkup told Develop that few are buying Android apps.
de Rochefort went on to list the perceived weakness of Android's application store.
“It is not as neatly done as on the iPhone,†he said, as quoted in a Reuters report.
“Google has not been very good to entice customers to actually buy products. On Android nobody is making significant revenue.â€
Google’s Android platform is used by numerous smartphone manufacturers – such as Motorola and Sony Ericsson – due to its flexibility and potential for appealing design. The open platform is widely considered as the leading alternative to Apple’s iPhone OS, though the impact of Gameloft’s abandonment remains to be seen.
Nearly fifteen percent of Gameloft’s revenues come via App Store purchases.

South Korean operator KT will begin selling the iPhone on 28th November - the first time Apple's handset has been officially available in the country.
KT will be selling the 32GB and 16GB iPhone 3GS models, as well as the 8GB iPhone 3G. Customers signing up to a 24-month contract will be able to get the top-end model for 132,000 Won (around $114).
Bloomberg suggests that sales of smartphones are expected to reach 800,000 units in South Korea this year, with Samsung, LG and Pantech accounting for 90% of sales.
KT will be hoping its iPhone deal helps it gain ground on larger rival SK Telecom, although with Apple having shifted to a policy of working with multiple carriers in each country, it's quite possible SKT will also be selling the iPhone soon.
Korean mobile content firms are already active on iPhone. For example, games publishers Gamevil and Com2uS have released a succession of popular games in the West.

But October ad requests stats not so good for BlackBerry, Symbian and WinMo
Android is on the charge when it comes to mobile internet and application usage, judging by AdMob’s just-released October Mobile Metrics Report.
Google’s OS took an 11% share of worldwide smartphone ad requests on AdMob’s network in October – up from 3% in April. In the US, it’s risen from 7% of requests to 20% in the same time period.
What’s more, Motorola’s Droid looks set to continue that growth. Just two weeks after its launch on 6th November, AdMob says it accounted for 24% of all its Android ad requests.
Globally, iPhone also increased its share of ad requests on AdMob’s network in the last six months, moving from 43% in April to 50% in October. The big loser was Symbian, which went from 36% to 25% in the same time period.
However, Research In Motion may have cause for concern. Its global market share of AdMob requests declined from 9% to 7% between April and October – but in its biggest market, the US, that share went from 17% to 12%.
Windows Mobile is also on the slide, with its global share shrinking from 5% in April to just 3% in October. Meanwhile, Palm’s webOS – represented in October by the recently-launched Palm Pre smartphone – took a 2% share that month.

There's a new worm on the radar. And, this time, it's a bit more nefarious than anything Rick Astley could have ever imagined himself.

The worm is the first malicious infestation to hit the iPhone, the first merely displaying a picture of 1980's crooner Rick Astley - although music lovers might claim that was pretty malicious as well.
According to a boatload of media outlets covering the news today, a second worm to hit the iPhone has been detected by security company F-Secure

China Unicom has great expectations for the iPhone despite lackluster sales, projecting that the device will represent 10 percent of all 3G phones in the People's Republic within two to three years. The chairman of China's second-largest wireless carrier also said that he expects the iPhone to be the top-selling smartphone in the burgeoning Chinese market.
In spite of intense interest in the initial offering of a legitimate iPhone after years of black-market devices trickling in from Hong Kong and abroad, China Unicom only gained 5,000 new subscriber since the device was released in October. However, the company is reportedly pleased with the sales and is claiming that the October launch of its world-standard WCDMA 3G network was also a success, with over a million new subscribers added each month.
Apple is also in talks with Unicom's competitor China Mobile, the world's largest wireless carrier with 475 million subscribers as compared with 141 million for China Unicom...

One of the biggest pet peeves I have with Cydia is the constant refreshing that takes place. Not only does the app want to refresh after opening, it seems to also want to do a full refresh every time you add a source, or install a new app.
On my 3G, I probably spend over a minute just waiting to launch Cydia for the first time. Let alone the additional wait time if I am adding a source or new app.
Now, I'm sure this auto-refreshing is there for a good reason. However, sometimes It's just not necessary to do a full refresh. Until now, I had always wished there was a way to toggle this on and off.
Well now there is. iSpazio has released a toggle for SBSettings that will enable or disable the Auto-Refreshing performed in Cydia. This speeds up Cydia ten fold.

If you like your software homebrewed with just a hint of alpha then boy do we have an app for you. The WebOS homebrew community just released Precorder; an app that lets your Palm Pre record audio and 30fps 480x320 pixel video in H.264/AVC format -- you can can even control the built-in LED for recording in low-light situations. Unfortunately, there's no video preview presented while recording but hey, it's alpha software bro... and it's free. Check a video sample after the break.

When it comes to nerd obsessions, the only thing that can trump a fictional tablet developed by battling left-coast legends is the promise of a revolutionary OS from Google that relies upon nothing but a browser and the dreams of a young Larry Ellison. Don't even start with your Korean product waifs as we're trying to keep the discussion in the realm of possibilities. Now, with the weekend over, you've probably experienced the same sense of ennui we've all felt at having downloaded and tested a copy of Chrome OS. To be fair, that meh-ness is kind of what you'd expect from a browser-based OS that's meant to get out of your way. Still, it's hard not to wonder where Android and its growing application base fits into Google's long-term OS strategy especially after seeing several ARM-based smartbook prototypes running Google's smartphone OS. Fortunately, Google co-founder Sergey Brin shed some light on this topic in a candid statement following the Chrome OS event. According to CNET, Brin said that Android and the Chrome OS "will likely converge over time," noting the common Webkit and Linux foundation of both operating systems. It's unclear when this might occur however. In fact, listening to Google CEO Eric Schmidt attempt to explain the difference between Google's operating systems in a recent CNET interview leaves us wondering if Google has a clear idea of its target markets as smartphone and laptop functionality continues to converge across devices. Schmidt concedes that it's too early to tell how the OSes will be used and prefers not to "prejudge the success" of each. "The future will unfold as it does," he says, and the open-source community will determine the natural fit. Check the interview after the break -- the Android vs. Chrome OS waffling begins at the 16:30 remaining mark of the 19 minute and 11 second interview.

Go figure, right? You get a relatively hot phone out onto more carriers, and just like that, sales increase. It ain't rocket science, buster. As AT&T grins happily while enjoying a death grip on Apple's cash cow here in the States, things are a lot more wide open for consumers across the pond. In both France and the UK, the iPhone has been given the all-clear to be sold on multiple carriers, and according to research from Bernstein, the "widening of the distribution has boosted Apple's value market share to 32 percent in the latest quarter from 21 percent just three months earlier." The notes also mention that Apple's increase is coming at the expense of RIM, with over 600,000 iPhone handsets being sold during Q3 2009 in France alone. The point to all this madness? Oh, not much -- just to tell Sir Jobs that he can count on quite a bit more dough should he decide to sell this elusive "iPhone" device on Verizon in the US of A.

UK law firm Olswang has published its 2009 Convergence Survey - a study of how people are using devices to access digital content.
The headline finding is that iPhone users are unsurprisingly heavy users of digital content - but interestingly are also more willing than other consumer groups to pay for that content.
19% of iPhone users surveyed said they access on-demand TV on their handsets, and 37% said they want to do so in the future. 41% said they are willing to pay (via micropayments or a subscription) for catch-up TV shows.
They were also asked about films, with 73% of iPhone users saying they'd pay to watch a film that's just been released in cinemas on their iPhone. However, only 30% said they would pay for newspaper articles or columns.
"Having discovered the habit and simplicity of paying for apps and other services on the iPhone, it would seem that iPhone owners are also more willing to pay for content of many types than the general online population," says Olswang partner Matthew Phillips.
"To maximise their revenue opportunities in the digital environment, companies need to build payment solutions into consumer propositions on other platforms that are as easy to use as that on the iPhone."

Considering the proliferation of 3G, WiFi, in-home broadband, and front-facing cameras on phones, you'd think that there'd be far more obvious ways to bridge video calls between phones and PCs -- but alas, it's virtually impossible, particularly in the States where carriers have a complete aversion to the topic. Enter Fring -- one of the mobile industry's VoIP pioneers that has spread its love from Symbian to almost every smartphone platform worth mentioning over the years -- which is stepping out today with a new build for S60 handsets that offers video support through Skype. The way we see it, this is great news for a couple of reasons: one, Skype is one of the few videoconferencing systems with widespread traction, and two, this suddenly makes front-facing cams useful to a whole swath of Nokia users on networks (ahem, AT&T and T-Mobile) that don't offer video calling themselves. Whether we actually use it is another story altogether, but hey, it's cool to have it if we absolutely must see your beautiful face right now in stunning low fidelity. Follow the break for a video demo.

Tesco Mobile, which piggy backs the O2 network, is taking pre-orders for iPhone 3G and 3GS having confirmed in a short statement that it is to offer the handset.
Pricing details are not available just yet, but Tesco Mobile offers both contracts and PAYG tariffs.
The news takes the number of UK operators either offering or confirmed to offer the iPhone to four, with the others being O2, Orange and Vodafone (from early 2010).

Recently we covered an article about the new iPhone worm that has been going around which affects users with OpenSSH installed and have not changed the default password. It started off innocent and escalated to something more threatening.
While there is of course the ability to change your password, some of you might not be so lucky and worms could be crawling your iPhone. Do not fret, as today I bring you some options for cleaning your iPhone. While not all of these options will bring you success, at least you'll know what your options are.

Quick status report for psx4iphone and gpSPhone coming right at cha!
psx4iphone v1.0.0 currently does not work on any device with firmware greater than 3.0. I have a build that now works with newer firmwares and will be releasing it shortly. Hopefully tomorrow, but don’t hold me to it.
gpSPhone currently works with all 2.x and 3.x firmwares on all devices. But there’s a catch. DevTeam messed up a kernel patch in the latest 3.1.x jailbreaks (confirmed by saurik) that affects only the iPhone 3g. If you have an iPhone 3g and use 3.1.x jailbroken with pwnagetool, there’s a fix for gpSPhone (as well as the upcoming psx4iphone). Simply run blackra1n on your current iPhone 3g firmware. It won’t erase anything or do any harm. It will however fix the issue at hand, and allow gpSPhone and the next psx4iphone to run.
Thanks,
ZodTTD

Recent days have seen intense speculation around mobile games publisher Gameloft's support for Android, sparked by negative comments made by the company's CFO. Something that hasn't been talked about, though, is how Gameloft's fiercest rival sees Android. Has EA Mobile thrown its weight behind the platform?
In a word: no.
Comprehensive Android app directory AndroLib lists just two EA Mobile games on Android Market: The Sims 3 and Bejeweled.
Meanwhile, the smartphone section of EA Mobile's own website only lists one Android phone – the venerable T-Mobile G1 – and just one game for it.
By contrast, the site says EA has 66 games available for the BlackBerry Pearl 8100, and 29 games for the WinMo-sporting Samsung i760.
Sister site ME contacted EA Mobile to get its views on Android, and while the publisher declined to respond directly, it did supply a 'recent quote' from its VP of worldwide publishing Adam Sussman:
"We look for Google’s Android platform to become an important channel for EA Mobile and we have already launched some of EA Mobile’s most popular franchises on Android including Bejeweled and The Sims 3 with more to come, including Surviving High School, Spore Origins and many others."
EA is hardly wary of new mobile platforms, having supported N-Gage, ploughed resources into iPhone, and recently took the stage at BlackBerry's developer conference to showcase its plans for OpenGL 3D games on RIM's handsets.
The picture that is emerging, then, is that the two biggest mobile games publishers in the world are still decidedly wary of Android - with EA even resisting the urge (so far) to simply port across its existing Java game catalogue.
Concern about Android's handset and OS-version fragmentation? Dissatisfaction with the performance of paid apps on Android Market? Waiting for handsets like the Droid to sell in their millions before committing resources?
The reasons are unclear, but it seems Google has work to do to make Android a serious mobile gaming platform.

Perhaps JR Raphael at PC World put it best: "iPhone App Rejected? There's a site for that"
In what amounts to yet another visible expression of the frustration many possess in response to the substantial number of iPhone and iPod applications rejected by Apple for reasons that continue to escape anyone's understanding - including, at times, even some who work at Apple - a new website has been launched to serve as a repository for the would-be applications that never made it through the App Store's approval process.

We've already gotten a glimpse of an updated on-screen keyboard seemingly set for inclusion in the next update to Windows Mobile 6.5, and it now looks like Microsoft might have even more changes on tap to keep folks satisfied in the buildup to Windows Mobile 7.
Apparently, something that may or may not be called Windows Mobile 6.5 'second edition' adds a number of UI updates that are supposedly designed to make it more usable with capacitive touchscreens. The biggest of those changes, it seems, is that the clickable buttons from the top bar have been removed in favor of a larger, more finger-friendly bar at the bottom -- which, judging from appearances, is not quite ready for prime time.
Of course, of all this is still just based on what's been turned up in an early build of the OS, but at least one unnamed Microsoft representative has reportedly confirmed that the updated UI does indeed come from Microsoft, but he apparently wouldn't confirm much else.

iPhone users (like myself) may frequently complain about how much they have to pay for the digital content they want, but it seems they’re still willing to pay up for it – much more so than owners of other smartphones, especially when it comes to television, film, and general entertainment content.
According to the annual Olswang Convergence Survey conducted by market research firm YouGov, the 1,013 adults and 536 13-17 year-olds surveyed in the UK exhibited a striking propensity toward a broad range of services on their iPhone, particularly on-demand television. Most interestingly, iPhone users also demonstrated a greater willingness to use micropayments and premium subscriptions to pay for access to their preferred content.

In a surprising – and arguably illegal – move Finnish mobile giant Nokia has chosen to highlight the emulation functionality of its N900 smartphone on its Nokia Conversation blog, according to ME.
The promotional video, which can be seen below, shows a dedicated emulation menu sporting buttons for the likes of the Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, NES, SNES, Spectrum, MSX and Game Gear.
Gameplay clips of both Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros 3 are also shown in the video.
Emulation programmes themselves aren’t illegal but downloading ROMs – which are essentially digital forms of games that are loaded within an emulator – are illegal unless the person downloading possesses an original copy of the game. The distribution of ROMs is illegal no matter the circumstance.

CNET UK has written a head-to-head piece entitled Apple Newton vs Apple iPhone. Despite the Newton being released some 10 years ago, and despite the iPhone being a phone, not a tablet, the site's editors believe the Newton is the more innovative of the two Apple products. The two devices were tied over four rounds, but in the 'Special Powers' element, where the iPhone was praised for its iPod capability, the Newton countered with its ability to play MP3s, connect to iTunes and 'its ability to work as a phone' because 'Blam! Not even the iPhone can do that.

Seeing as how the iPhone's exclusivity status has been slipping, it was inevitable that the bourgeoisie would invent a new way to distinguish themselves from the lowly masses. Enter a designer by the name of Stuart Hughes, already expertly familiar with slapping precious metals onto slightly less precious mobile phones. He classes up a 3GS handset with a 22 carat solid gold body, which he then sprinkles with no less than 190 diamonds. And just to make sure none of the riff raff can get their hands on it, this creation is priced at £1.92 million ($3.2 million), which places it precisely £1.92 million outside our budget. Completing the, erm, value proposition is a storage chest cut from a single block of granite, which you may peep after the break.

F-Secure researchers are calling attention to the fact that it's impossible to run third-party anti-virus on iPhones, because the SDK doesn't allow for it. It's a problem, as they claim malware will start to target the phone. 'None of the existing anti-virus vendors can make one, without help from Apple,' chief research officer Mikko Hypponen said. 'Apple hasn't been too interested in developing antivirus solutions for the iPhone, because there are no viruses, which of course, isn't exactly true.' At the moment, the only worms faced by the iPhone have targeted unlocked, jailbroken devices — so Apple's not too bothered protecting users of such phones."
While Apple claims that the iPhone's closed nature offers protection to its users, and security vendors maneuver for a piece of a market now closed to them, clearly both sides are pushing their own self-interest.

Edmund Conway has an interesting article in the Telegraph where he analyzes where the money goes when you buy a complex electronic device marked 'Made in China,' and why a developed economy doesn't need a trade surplus in order to survive. For his example, Conway chooses a 30GB video iPod 'manufactured' in China in 2006. Each iPod, sold in the US for $299, provides China with an export value of about $150, but as it turns out, Chinese producers really only 'earned' around $4 on each unit. 'China, you see, is really just the place where most of the other components that go inside the iPod are shipped and assembled.' Conway says that when you work out the overall US balance of payments, it shows that most of the cash for high tech inventions has flowed back to the United States as a direct result of the intellectual property companies own in their products. 'While the iPod is manufactured offshore and has a global roster of suppliers, the greatest benefits from this innovation go to Apple, an American company, with predominantly American employees and stockholders who reap the benefits,' writes Conway. 'As long as the US market remains dynamic, with innovative firms and risk-taking entrepreneurs, global innovation should continue to create value for American investors and well-paid jobs for knowledge workers. But if those companies get complacent or lose focus, there are plenty of foreign competitors ready to take their places.

Apple is giving independent developers something to be thankful for this holiday week. The company has taken iTunes LP and Extras public, encouraging indy developers to get creative and make their own interactive digital content to be distributed through iTunes beginning early next year. According to Apple Insider:
Quote:
The new move signals a big move in taking on Adobe Flash, pushing the adoption of web standards, and creating an new business model for content that could impact how the company's forthcoming tablet is sold and used.

A new application approved for the App Store brings widgets to the iPhone, circumventing the need to first jailbreak it.
Yes, indeed, iGizmoz has earned Apple's stamp of approval. Why? For obvious reasons. While there are already a few high-profile apps like Cydget and SmartScreen that enable one to set up widgets on the iPhone, that process is only made possible by jailbreaking the device.
You can understand why Apple is seemingly gung-ho about iGizmoz, although its unlikely anyone is going to regret having jailbroken their iPhones because of this $0.99 application's arrival.

This has been a long time coming, but my schedule is just now starting to free up. I have updated psx4iphone to also support the 3.1.x series of firmwares. Included in psx4iphone v1.1.0 is a fix for a bug causing the non-scaled landscape screen to display properly.
Don’t expect too much difference in performance. This emulator will still require an iPhone 3gs or iPod Touch 3rd Gen to really shine. I will be working more on this emulator as I get more free time.
You can download psx4iphone from the ZodTTD Repo which is built-in to Cydia via the included community sources package. This means it is also available via RockApp, Icy, etc. Brief installation instructions are provided within the package info.
If you run into any issues with psx4iphone v1.1.0 feel free to ask for support via the comments. Just remember, don’t ask for ROMs/ISOs or where to get the BIOS.
Thanks,
ZodTTD

Could be something, could be nothing, but an "iPhone3,1" mysteriously popped up in the usage records of a Bay Area App Store developer. If you'll remember, the "iPhone2,1" turned out to be the 3GS.
The 3,1 phone was spotted in an analytics report from November for the iPhone app iBART.
This isn't the first time something with that ID popped up on the rumor radar. In August, 3,1 was discovered hiding in iPhone firmware files. However, as MacRumors notes, this is the first time the marker's been "seen" gallivanting out in public.
Also noteworthy is the timing of the discovery: In October 2008, Apple starting testing the 3GS in and around the San Francisco area.

A little bit of emulation is a basic rite of passage for a modern day device that allows open software development, and the N900 is no different. We first saw the device rocking some SNES way back in September, but apparently Nokia couldn't pass up an opportunity to demonstrate the phone's prowess and put up its own video of a few emulators in action. Unfortunately, while emulators are completely legal, the ROMs that run on them are rarely legit, and despite Nokia's odd assertion in the video that "most publishers allow individual title usage provided that the user is in possession of the original title," the phone giant has since pulled the video from the internets, and Nintendo is reportedly looking into the matter. Of course, N900 emulatin' is still easy to come by from third parties -- check one out after the break.

Rumors abound this weekend that Apple is holding steadfast to the late Autumn tradition of previous years and is now once again testing new iPhone hardware that could be introduced as early as next summer.
According to a report from 9to5Mac:
Quote:
Today we learned that new iPhones were found using apps with tracking software in the San Francisco area. The news is not surprising since the same thing has happened around this time of year for the past few years. This is the traditional time that Apple starts testing new iPhone hardware for release in summer.

iClassic is a media player for your library, that mimics the interface of the famous iPod Classic. It will fully emulate the iPod Classic's functionality, including using the old-school Click Wheel. Unfortunately, the app will not support games in this release but it is being worked on for future updates. The app is expected to cost $2.00 from the Cydia Store.
I spoke with Emilio Peláez earlier today and he has informed me that this application is indeed complete and he is simply waiting on confirmation from @saurik for it to be added to the Store. So we can expect this any moment. At this point I don't have confirmation if it will be in the ModMyI repo or not but keep your eyes peeled!
Now, I'm not entirely sure why you would want to go backwards with technological designs, but I guess for the simple fact that you can do it, makes it kinda cool. This app would be more for the fanatics who had iPods

Two weeks ago, a shipment of from three to four thousand iPhones- valued at from €2 million to €3 million - was stolen from a warehouse in Belgium. Now, an unnamed black market dealer is selling off iPhones in Russia, raising concerns that these are indeed the snatched smartphones.
According to the Russian website iPhones.ru, the phones - which are called "Europeans" - are being sold in lots of no less than 100 for drastically reduced prices, cash on demand. The iPhone 3GS is not available legitimately in Russia, but it's relatively easy to buy an unlocked "ayfon" from overseas on the black market. The site reports that vendors are suspicious of the deals, because it's generally believed that Interpol is on the case, and has the IMEIs on file.

New iPhone app junaio blends social media with augmented reality technology, capitalising on two of the current hot trends in the casual gaming world.
The app (App Store link) is the work of Metaio, and lets users create and place 3D objects, tweets or websites into the real world, while sharing their creations with friends through social networks.
The creation aspect is interesting, because most mobile AR apps have focused on users browsing content created by professional developers, or sourced from existing websites like Wikipedia.
Brands can get involved in junaio too, though. Movie firm Focus Features has already signed up to make characters from its animated flicks 9 and Coraline available on the platform for users to play with.
"With the introduction of junaio, we are giving everyday consumers the ability to utilise and experience augmented reality in combination with location-based content and social interactions," says Metaio CEO Thomas Alt.

The free app is available for iPhone today, with Symbian and Android versions on the way soon.

According to a trusted source who's seen it with their own eyes, the Google Phone "is a certainty."
And by "Google Phone" we don't simply mean another Android handset. We're talking about Google-branded hardware running a version of Android we haven't yet seen.
Over the next few weeks, Google Phones (most probably in early, prototype form) will flood the Mountain View campus. They'll don large LCDs while running a new version of Android—either Flan or the version of Android beyond it—which our source spotted running on Google's handset as well as a laptop. (Whatever the software was, it most certainly wasn't Chrome OS, we were assured.)
But maybe the most intriguing bit is what someone said to our source offhandedly, that the current Android, the we all know and love, is not the "real" Android. So what makes for a "real" version of Android?
Our best guess is an Android OS with Google Voice at its heart.

AA calls for an awareness campaign aimed at ‘iPod Zombies’
The Automobile Association has called upon the Department of Transport to launch a campaign warning cyclists about the dangers of riding while listening to an iPod.
According to the Daily Mail, a number of complaints have arisen regarding cyclists – dubbed iPod Zombies – who wear earphones while cycling.
The newspaper cites the example of Abigail Haythorne, who died after pulling out into an oncoming car and is thought to have had earphones in, and a six year old girl from Merseyside, who was mown down an seriously injured by “an iPod wearing cyclist.â€
Government statistics that show that 820 cyclists were killed or seriously injured in the last quarter, a 19 per cent rise on the same period last year.
“It’s a serious problem which is only going to get worse as the number of cyclists increases - lots of people are completely oblivious to what’s going on around them,†commented the campaign director for Youth for Road Safety, Manpreet Darroch.
“People don’t realise how dangerous listening to music is on the roads - whether pedestrian or cyclist. It takes one of your key senses away. People shouldn’t do it.
“You can legislate until you are blue in the face. On the issue of iPods we just need to raise awareness.â€
