Version 0.1.0 - 30 Oct 2008 " You gotta start somewhere"
Initial release of FSO Control.
Beside being rough here are some points and notes:
* I'd like to launch this with a POWER button press but I can not
figure out how to set the DISPLAY environment when launching a
GUI with a rule in oevents. You can try though. Put a rule in
/etc/freesmartphone/oevents/rules.yaml like this:
trigger: InputEvent()
filters:
- HasAttr(switch, "POWER")
- HasAttr(event, "pressed")
actions: Command("fso-control")
* Depending on the version of frameworkd-conf the is a typo in
/etc/dbus-1/system.d/frameworkd.conf
<policy user="root">
<allow own="org.freesmartphone.ousaged"/>
- <allow send_path="/org/freesmartphone/usage"/>
+ <allow send_path="/org/freesmartphone/Usage"/>
<allow send_destination="org.freesmartphone.Usage"/>
<allow receive_sender="org.freesmartphone.Usage"/>
</policy>
* The "lock" button does nothing and will become a button to power
the various radios - gsm, gps, wifi, blutooth. Perhaps configure them
also?
* The more button does nothing. I don't know what it should do.

We've seen a few accessories for augmenting the gaming experience on the iPhone which would give the device awesome functions similar to a game controller, such as the elusive and yet-to-materialize iControlPad and the totally fake JoyPod. Well, Marware's Game Grip is sort of like that -- silicone sleeves that your phone fits into -- except that it doesn't actually do anything beyond providing 'handles' for your phone while you game. Oh, and it exists. So let's refer to it as the 'enjoyment enabler' of your iPhone 3G or iPod touch 2G which can be used with headphones (just like normal), can be charged while gaming (just like normal), and has a 'cord management system' (kind of not normal). If that's not enough to convince you to reach for your wallet, the "lifetime guarantee" and ludicrously zany look of the thing will probably get you to bite... it's $49.99 and available for pre-order right now.

I think it is safe to say that design student Kyle Buckner is more than just an iPhone user—he is an iPhone worshiper. After all, the iPhone sits atop his elaborate wood-carved pedestal like a King on his throne. Is this the beginning of some sort of cult? Will there be robes and chanting? Truth be told, the sculpture was carved for a school project—but throw an actual dock in there and Buckner would be the envy of Apple superfans everywhere.

What you are you seeing in these screenshots may seem like a real iPhone application, but it's not. It's a web page displayed in full screen, completely out of Safari, behaving and looking exactly as any native iPhone program would do. The best thing: It is not a new feature of the incoming iPhone OS 2.2 update: The secret feature is "hidden" in the current 2.1 version and only requires one thing: HTML code embedded in the web page itself. No iPhone modification is required. If you are browsing this from the iPhone, you can try it yourself very easily:

FastMac has unveiled their second generation iV battery pack for the iPhone 3G, and it promises to deliver up to 24 hours of talk time, 750 hours (31 days) of standby, 20+ hours of video and almost 72 hours of audio playback time. Depending on your settings, we are talking triple or even quadruple the available power here. It looks a little bulkier than Mophie's Juice Pack, but the extra battery life and added touches like a built-in LED flash/flashlight and a second USB port to charge additional gadgets definitely makes it the more attractive option on paper (a hands-on will be coming up shortly to put this to the test). Plus, it is priced less than the Juice Pack at $80.

Had to happen. A version of the venerable PC classic Dope Wars has come to the iPhone. Except this "homage" has the even less acceptable moniker of Drug Lords, and takes advantage of the phone's location-tracking to keep your drug prices fresh no matter where your shivering, aimless shambling takes you. Don't expect this in the App Store any time soon.

Carphone Warehouse looks set to give away free smartphones running Windows Mobile 7 with copies of the upcoming Windows 7 PC operating system, Register Hardware has learned. A phone manufacturer source familiar with the phone retailer's plans told us that the Windows Mobile 7 phone and Windows 7 bundle boxes will be released on the same day that the new desktop OS is launched in the UK, which he said could come during September or October 2009."

The iPhone OS 2.2 is taking shape at a good rhythm. The user interface is being refined and development of new features keeps going on steady. While I'm sure most of us can only think "copy and paste! copy and paste! copy and paste!" and increased speed and reliability, there are a few new things that we would definitely like to have as soon as possible

See it’s not just us. Apparently everyone is into their iPhone for games, well at 25 percent of iPhone owners have downloaded a game for the device. Sure that’s really not even close to everyone, but it sure as heck beats out cellphones which, according to a recent survey, can only say that six percent of owners have downloaded a game.
Game developers have created nearly 1,700 games for the iPhone since its release, according to an article in the Los Angeles Times today. That’s more than twice the number available in the App Store’s second biggest category.

We’re still getting acquainted with our T-Mobile G1, discovering all the little nuances that the Android OS has to offer. But, there’s just something missing from the Android platform… what could it be?
A GameBoy emulator!
One of the first applications launched for the iPhone was a GameBoy emulator. The application was an unofficial release available only to iPhone owners that had jailbroken (and thus opened up access to the file system) their handsets. The iPhone GameBoy emulator was restricted to jailbreak-circles due to its dubious legality and the non-sanctioned SDK tools used to develop the application, but it was a decent success in its own right. It sure would be nice if someone developed a GameBoy emulator for Android.
Fortunately, there already is a GameBoy emulator for Android. All hail AndroidBoy! Regardless of any legal obstacles, AndroidBoy is now available through Google’s official Android application store - Android Market. The availability of AndroidBoy on the Android Market is a testament to Google’s decidedly more open stance on Android development than Apple’s lock-down policy on the iPhone OS.
AndroidBoy supports original GameBoy games as well as more recent GameBoy Color gaming titles - turning your T-Mobile G1 into a veritable Super GameBoy! Fire up the Android Market application and download AndroidBoy today.

If you're concerned about sensitive data you may have stored on your phone, be it bank details, email addresses or photographs of a secret underground lair, British IT innovator Virtuity has come up with a rather nifty 'Mission Impossible' style solution.
If a phone is lost or stolen, the software can detect where it is anywhere in the world using WiFi and GSM communications and start deleting any information that might be dangerous in the wrong hands.
It adheres to US Department of Defence standards for data removal and once complete a report is sent back with information on what was erased and where the phone is.
Initially it'll be released for Windows Mobile devices that offer business application but this will be expanded and development is already underway for the Symbian OS.
BackStopp also offers software that'll do a similar job for laptops and its applications come with handy features such as encryption and the fact that it's 'always on' and not reliant on an internet connection to work.

Elecont Dialer allows users to organize phone contacts directly on Home/Today screen. Contacts can be easily accessed by touching it with finger or stylus or selecting it by joystick. Elecont Dialer shows contacts in multiple layouts, optimized for different screen sizes. Most interesting feature is display mode with touch-controlled sliding effect, which takes only 1 line of Today screen. It saves screen space for other plugins

I didn't expect much from games on the iPhone. I had visions of casual games, perhaps a fancy take on solitaire or a version of poker that takes advantage of the handset's touchscreen. Surely not a true mobile gaming experience.
Boy, was I wrong. For the last few days I've been sampling some of the games available from the iTunes Store on the iPod Touch, and I've been stunned at how elaborate and involved they are. On the iPod Touch I've played a version of Gameloft's Real Soccer 2009 that rivals the version of the game on the Nintendo DS, and I didn't even miss the buttons. I've seen demonstrations of Sim City, forthcoming for the iPhone and the Touch from Electronic Arts (ERTS), that look more elaborate and sophisticated than any versions I've played before on a desktop PC or console.
They're immersive, addictive fun. And it's now readily apparent to me that the iPhone and iPod Touch are well on their way to becoming an important force in handheld gaming. When you consider the ease and reach of Apple's (AAPL) online method for distributing games, Apple could do in this category what it did in online music, causing big headaches for the genre's established players, Sony (SNE) and Nintendo.
Apple's come a long way in short order. In the three months and change since the iTunes App Store opened for business, it's already home to some 1,500 games, compared with fewer than 300 titles for Sony's PlayStation Portable and about 600 for Nintendo's handheld console, the DS.
Apple's Gaming Advantages
The iPhone maker is also holding its own when it comes to units sold. Based on sales data and analysts' projections, Apple is on track to sell an easy 40 million devices or more a year that are capable of playing games.
Nintendo sold 42 million DS consoles during the 18 months from January 2007 to June 2008, according to market research firm iSuppli. So Apple is on pace to sell about as many game-capable handhelds in a single year as Nintendo, the market's current leader, has sold in the most recently reported 18 months. This suggests that Apple could be on the cusp of claiming the crown as the world's market leader in handheld gaming.
Now look at Apple's advantages over competitors. Apple already has more titles for its games than both of the other two combined. And aside from the free ones, games on the App Store sell at prices ranging up to $9.99 and sometimes a little more. Compare that with the $20 to $40 for Nintendo DS games and the $10 to $40 for games on the PSP.
And with Apple selling via iTunes, there are no costs associated with the distribution of physical media. All games are downloaded directly to the device. And in the event the game is buggy, the developer can easily issue an easy-to-download fix. The developer gets 70% of the sale and Apple keeps 30%, with no one else to get in the middle. Nintendo and Sony partners have to worry about shelf space at stores, shipping, returns, defective merchandise, and even the occasional shoplifter.
On a revenue comparison, Apple's gaming sales will be much smaller than at Sony or Nintendo because the price of individual games is so much lower. What's more, not everyone who buys an iPhone or a Touch will also buy games. But the potential game sales per iPhone user will be higher because of the price differential. In its most recent quarter, Sony sold 3.18 million PSPs and about 12 million games for an average of fewer than four games per device.
Apple's Impact on the Gaming Industry
While there's no data yet on specific iPhone game sales, users of the iPhone are heavier gamers than those of other phones. A survey by iSuppli's ConsumerTrak found that U.S. cell-phone users report spending less than 3% of phone-use time on games. But that average shoots up considerably to more than 9% on the first iPhone and 6% on the iPhone 3G. (That's still less time than iPhone owners spend on e-mail, texting, or talking.)
How big an impact can Apple have? "They're not going to put Sony or Nintendo out of business," says Van Baker, a gaming analyst at Gartner Group (IT). Both companies have strong and thriving home-console businesses.
And the iPhone and Touch aren't ideal gaming devices. They're also made for calling, Web access, and e-mail. And both lack buttons, which arguably would give players more control over complex in-game moves and maneuvers. (But the iPhone and the Touch have the multitouch screen and the accelerometer, which allow for some pretty fancy moves of their own).
Nor are Apple's newly spawned gaming devices cheap. The iPod Touch starts at $229 and the iPhone 3G starts at $199 and requires a two-year service contract. The Nintendo DS goes for $129 while the PSP goes for $170 to $200. But once you add the cost of games, and in the case of the PSP, a $30-to-$40 Memory Stick, the iPhone's price begins to look competitive. Then the iPhone also has iTunes, which includes easy access to music, movies, TV shows, and more games all the time.
It's enough to make me wonder whether Apple is on its way to conquering yet another sector of the consumer-technology business from out of nowhere. We'll certainly know more after the holiday season, but if I worked for the Sony or Nintendo handheld gaming divisions, I'd be watching the holiday sales figures closely.

If you're one of those people always complaining about the iPhone keyboard (the lack of one, that is), then this is probably a vital piece of news, even if it's not totally practical. Or practical in any way, actually. Some very enterprising citizen of the world seems to be running a chunk of Ruby code on his jailbroken iPhone 3G, which allows it to recognize what appears to be a Palm / Visor external keyboard connected via a custom cable. The results of this intense bit of modification? Well -- not much, honestly, but it's still kinda cool. "Hello Keyboard," indeed. Check out the video of it in action after the break, here.

It's been less than two weeks since T-Mobile's G1 hit shelves, and Android's already been jailbroken. Folks over at the xda-developers forum discovered an easy way to start telnet on the device, log in as root and get full system access and read and write. While the Googlephone is nowhere near as restricted as the iPhone, there were apparently still a few walls that needed to be broken down and now, anything goes. Check out modmygphone for the full list of jailbreak instructions.

How big are cell phones in Japan? If Final Fantasy IV The After is any indication, pretty damn big. An episode sequel to Final Fantasy IV, the cell phone title has been downloaded over 2 million times and is available for Japanese carrier DoCoMo's FOMA 903i and 703i series as well as for carrier AU's WIN BREW series. It was released earlier this year in February, and new "chapters" appear on a near monthly basis.

Today, SanDisk unveiled an advanced flash file system for solid-state drives (SSDs) that yields dramatic improvement in performance and reliability for computing applications. This next generation of patented flash management is called ExtremeFFS, and has the potential to accelerate random write speeds by up to 100 times over existing systems.
It has been discussed by reliable sources that the reason it takes so long to copy media to the iPhone is flash's slow write speeds. This is theorized because the relatively slow write speed of flash can have a bottleneck effect at certain times during certain applications and uses, although most of the time write operations are "fire and forget."
Recently, flash has made improvements in write speeds, but NAND flash will always be somewhat challenged in this aspect, because the way that writes work with the technology. In order to write data to a nonempty flash sector, you have to first erase that sector and then write to the... [Read More]

There's been a flurry of chatter over a rumor that AT&T's Ralph de la Vega, CEO of the company's Mobility and Consumer markets announced that the carrier would be releasing an Android-based phone in the near future. We'd love to be able to confirm that info, but according to an article just published on the San Francisco Chronicle's site, de la Vega has feelings that seem to run quite contrary to the sentiment. According to the paper:
"De la Vega said AT&T continues to look at Google's Android operating system but is not prepared to make any moves to carry any Android phones. He said the platform is still evolving and needs to open up even more to offer a wider array of non-Google applications."
As much as we want to see this thing happen, it looks like the boys at AT&T aren't feeling Google's insistence on intrinsically linking devices to its web apps. Haven't you heard guys? The future is in the cloud. Oh, and open.

There's not exactly a lot of details to go on here (or any, really), but AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega has just confirmed during an interview at the Web 2.0 Summit that an AT&T-approved iPhone tethering option will indeed be available "soon." That lack of detail includes any word on pricing or, of course, an actual release date, though MacRumors is reporting separately that it's hearing the tethering capability will be built into the 2.2 firmware, which seems like at least a reasonable guess.

Oh Apple. Is it that you can't see the things you're doing, or that you simply don't care how they look? If you'll recall, few months ago Jobs and co. kicked up quite a dust storm over a seemingly innocuous application called Podcaster, which allowed you to receive over-the-air updates of new podcasts when they were released. The company rejected the app based on the grounds that it "duplicates the functionality of the Podcast section of iTunes," a claim that seemed unreasonable at the time, and should now feel downright criminal. According to a German blog which has posted pictures of the latest beta build of firmware 2.2, Apple has included functionality which allows you to download podcasts over-the-air. The new addition works with both video and audio, and over 3G / EDGE and WiFi, though the size of podcasts is limited to 10MB when using the cell network. Now we don't pretend to assume that Apple just got this idea after seeing Podcaster in action -- and it's clear that Apple is killing projects which are similar to its own -- but it's still hard to stomach the concept of the company outright refusing an application with nearly the exact same functionality, only to turn around and add it to their installed software. This kind of veiled violence against developers only serves to chip away at the support Apple has engendered in its community, and drive those hands and eyes to other platforms. C'mon Steve -- we know you can do better than this.

At Australian carrier Telstra's annual investment day, Steve Ballmer did what he does best: talk crap about the competition. The target? Android. "I don't really understand their strategy. Maybe somebody else does." You see, it doesn't make any money, and that's why it baffles him. It actually kind of baffles me that it baffles him, since Google's approach is not so dissimilar from how Windows took over the world, just adapted to the wild 'n' crazy mobile market.

Ask an avid desktop Linux user if he or she (ok, he) uses an antivirus solution, and he won't give you an answer, he'll give you a sermon. And while his zeal might be inappropriate, his sentiment will be largely correct: Linux really doesn't need antivirus software. Android, with a smaller market share and simpler guts than most common Linux distros, has even less to worry about — which is why it's completely absurd for SMobile systems to release VirusGuard, the first antivirus software for the mobile platform.

Magic Tap, a 99-cent iPhone application, lets you send fake calls to yourself on command, just in case you ever need an excuse to get out of an awkward situation such as a horrible blind date, or having "that talk" with your girlfriend. To make this application more realistic, it lets you customize the caller's name, number and photo I.D. to anyone you choose. However, keep this in mind: setting the caller I.D. to "Shakira" with a steamy photo of the diva probably wouldn't be too convincing, so you better stick with using Jason Chen's sexy mug instead. We've even provided one for you after the cut.

As you may have noticed, Google doesn't exactly seem to be hesitant about pushing out Android updates, and it looks like it's now at it again, letting the new RC30 update slip out just days after folks finally figured out what the mysterious RC29 update actually did. This particular update is decidedly less mysterious, however, with Google saying up front that it had been notified of the jailbreaking issue with Android and has developed a "fix," adding that it is "currently working with our partners to push the fix out and updating the open source code base to reflect these changes." No word on any other changes included in the update, but it's supposedly on an "accelerated release" and should be in everyone's hands within the next the three or four days.

Sure, Windows Mobile 7 is a year away, but while Steve Ballmer was busy talking smack about Android, he did manage to confirm that Windows Mobile 6.5, which Motorola leaked, is real.
While he didn't go into details, he hinted at an improved UI (one can only hope) and software flow. Neowin mentions that it's also believed that 6.5 will be the first Windows Mobile release to have Zune software integration, since WM7 is taking so damn long. We could see 6.5 released in the first couple months of 2009, so maybe we'll get our first peek at CES?

Swim by Teknolog, part of his Bergamot project, has just been ported from the UIQ platform to S60 3rd Edition. Swim is a freeware utility for automatic periodic synchronization of data with internet servers such as Google Calendar (through GooSync), Mobical, Zyb and Ovi. It makes use of the existing SyncML support in the system, and adds timing capabilities, something both UIQ and S60 mysteriously lack. You can set it to sync your data every 15 minutes, every hour, every 4 hours, every 12 hours, daily, or weekly.

MoStacks by René Brunner is a data management freeware (a "database") for UIQ3 smartphones inspired by Apple's then-revolutionary HyperCard program. Instead of databases and records MoStacks works with stacks of cards: Data is stored in a MoStack, a file with a format based on a four-level hierarchy of stack, backgrounds, cards and fields. MoStacks consists of two programs, the MoStacks Development System running on Windows and the MoStacks Manager running on UIQ3. There is support for easy and fast transfers of stacks between PC and phone. MoStacks offers a script language, again inspired by HyperCard's HyperTalk language, and a number of import and export formats. Most notably there is a powerful CSV importer and the ability to directly import most HanDBase files.

While iPod Classic gaming doesn't have quite the excitement of iPhone/iPod touch software, the famous Tamagotchi virtual pet is finally making its way to the platform. In Tamagotchi: 'Round the World you can play with one of four animals through six minigames and three activities Sure, Tamagotchi is a few years late on the iPod scene, but for $4.99 you can relive the digital late 90s all over again without blasting Alanis Morissette and cozying up in a nice flannel.

A couple weeks ago, Apple made its grand entrance into our Shipping Hall of Shame by sending out its new, less horrifically hazardous USB power adapter for the iPhone 3G in these monstrous boxes, despite their huge emphasis lately on going green. All those boxes really add up too, since Apple recalled every single adapter. The iPhone Blog reports that they're now shipping them in much tinier, more efficient padded envelopes

news from zodttd:
I have spent today working on vlc4iphone. When it comes to performance mplayer wins, but it seems some people still like the feature set vlc4iphone has. These features include the ability to stream video (such as TV) and audio content from a PC to the iPhone. It even has a ShoutCast internet radio browser & player!
vlc4iphone v1.6.0 is now available publicly on Cydia in the Multimedia section. As ZodTTD.com is a pre-installed repo of Cydia, you're ready to go. So check it out!
In this release I have fixed many bugs, including the dreaded bug that caused many people not to see video in the last beta release. Some codecs (RTMP for instance) are still missing, and depending on the demand for them, I will add them and update to a later VLC version as well.
The only drawback is performance of videos of resolutions of 640x480 or greater. What I've done is lowered the decoding resolution of many formats of video at this resolution so now you are able to be play them at decent speeds. The quality of the picture suffers however. I suggest users of vlc4iphone to use videos of 320x240 resolution if possible.

Onyx Online, for the iPhone, is kind of like Xbox Live. Sort of. The ambitious service is the brainchild of Trism developer Steve Demeter, who hopes to add a slew of "social media" features to iPhone games, like leaderboards, achievements, forums, and the like. There's even a pissing contest feature, wherein Onyx-enabled games will allow players to view each other's profiles, scores, challenge friends, and see what games people are playing. Like we said, just add a headset and some 15-year-old boys screaming "your gay" and you have Xbox Live (and no, there's no typo there— even when they scream it, they use the wrong spelling, just like in the forums).

This is one of the more bizarre bugs we’ve ever heard. The T-Mobile G1 has an open root shell that interprets everything you type as a command. It was discovered when a user just happened to type the word ‘reboot’ in a conversation and the phone immediately rebooted. A patch has already been rolled out to fix this issue. It also buttons up the earlier telnetd SUID problem.

We've seen our fair share of iPod speakers around here, and all too often they resemble boom boxes or clock radios (or sometimes both). Now, thanks to the combined efforts of EOps and industrial designer Michael Young, we finally have something that appears equally suited to the home, office and Korova Milk Bar. The i24R3 consists of an iPod dock / 40W subwoofer and two (upgradable to eight) 3-inch 20W satellite speakers, all in a fetching pure gloss white and aluminum casing. The whole shebang can be controlled with the included RF remote, from your iPod / iPhone or from any PC or Mac sporting iTunes and the included Wireless USB dongle. The base accepts a bevy of inputs and outputs, including RCA audio, video and composite video out -- and if that weren't enough, each speaker can be controlled separately using the included motion sensors, allowing hands-off volume and equalizer control. Something like that must be seen to be appreciated, so make sure you check out the video after the break. No price yet, but these guys should be hitting the street in early 2009.

Just days after supplanting the BlackBerry in customer satisfaction among business wireless smartphone users, Apple's iPhone has taken down another cellphone icon, Motorola's Razr, in terms of total sales. According to NPD (the leading wireless research firm) the iPhone outsold the Razr in the 3Q—representing the first changing of the guard in three years. This change comes despite a higher price tag in the midst of a struggling economy. In fact, NPD notes that overall sales of cellphones are down 15% from last year.

Often, when people carp about Mobile Firefox or Opera not being able to run on the iPhone 'cause of Apple's SDK restrictions, they'll point to Android and say "I can't wait for Mobile Firefox on Android" or some variation of that, since Android theoretically doesn't have any limitations. I've got some bad news for those people. Firefox Mobile (aka Fennec) isn't coming to Android anytime soon

Recent firmware updates may have aimed to shut down such shenanigans, but it looks they were a little too slow to stop Jay Freeman (a.k.a. Saurik) from going to town with his newly jailbroken G1 and installing Debian on the handset. What's more, he apparently even managed to get Debian and Android to play nice with each other, letting you have a completely normal and unassuming phone by day and a nerd machine by night.
As you might expect, however, it's not exactly as simple as installing an app from the Android Market, but anyone with a little experience in installing Linux distributions on unconventional devices should be able to follow the instructions fairly easily, although actually turning it into something useful is another matter. Hit up the read link below to get started.

The company described MVP as a "thin layer of software" that will be embedded in handsets and 'be optimized to run efficiently on low-power-consuming and memory-constrained mobile phones.' Asked whether MVP would offer something different from the abstraction already provided by mobile Java, VMware's European product director Fredrik Sjostedt told ZDNet UK that MVP would require less recoding. 'If you want to have an application run on a Java-specific appliance, you need to code it for Java," Sjostedt said. "What we're introducing with MVP is an [embedded] abstraction layer below that, between the physical hardware and the software layer.

Richard|Solo has unveiled a backup battery for the iPhone that has some features its competitors don't—a built-in LED flashlight and a laser pointer. All gimmicks aside, the 1800mAh capacity is good—but I just don't see the value in buying one of these awkward extenders for $70 when you can pick up a more practical case version like the Fastmac iV for only $10 more.

The monkey lovers over at Sega Mobile have just flung some poo at T-Mobile and AT&T mobile phones with the release of Sambe De Amigo for the mobile phone. It's all the phone of the Sega classic, only without a great deal of the fun! Seriously guys, taking a game famous for its innovative controls and excellent music and then getting rid of both? Not generally a good idea.
“A classic and beloved rhythm music game, Samba de Amigo has had fans shaking for years with its party-like soundtrack, colorful characters and casual yet addictive gameplay,†said Tammy Robinson, Senior Director of Mobile, SEGA of America. “Samba de Amigo is another great example of the fun that can be had on the mobile platform.â€
Actually, it's a rather good example of how much better gaming is on the iPhone, but I suppose that wouldn't be a very good marketing blurb, now would it?

In May, we told you about Apple's patent for a Wii Remote-like object. Now, it's November, and we're telling you again. Why? Because another, improved patent for the device has turned up. This takes it from the realms of "oh, it's something Apple are exploring" to "oh, Apple are looking seriously at developing one of these". It's still using IR, and the same basic principles of the Wii Remote, except now it's going one better by (in theory) having the ability to differentiate between the IR it's meant to detect (ie the Wii Remote) and the IR it's not meant to detect (ie your house lights). As a reminder, this is important because, with App Store games doing brisk business for the company on the iPhone, there'd be nothing stopping Apple doing something similar with this Wii Remote-like peripheral on other platforms.

I spent a chunk of the weekend picking through the 1,500 plus iPhone games out currently, as I started pulling together a gift guide for the iPhone. As you can imagine it's quite a challenge to try and find a handful of gems among all of those games. Sure a bunch are shovelware, but there are also quite a few excellent titles.
Take for instance Gameloft's Guitar Rock Tour. The GameLoft-developed title leans heavily on the Guitar Hero franchise for its gameplay mechanics and aesthetic, but it manages to do enough different to make it work on the iPhone that I found it to be quite a bit of fun to play.
The game comes with two instruments to choose from and 17 songs, all of which I suspect are covers. To play through a game using the guitar you just tap your way through the notes on the four-fret guitar as they fall toward you down the neck of the virtual instrument. The songs drop sustained notes and lines of notes at you as well as a number of double notes. If you come across a line of notes you can slide your finger across them as they scroll down. Once you build up enough rock power you can activate the familiar power-up by sliding your finger up the gauge to go into a power-up mode that doubles your points.

T-mobile's G1 has been given the teardown treatment again by the guys at iSuppli, and their official estimate of its materials price is $143.89. The most costly part inside is the dual-ARM processor baseband at $28.49, followed by the display at $19.67 and the 3-megapixel cam at $12.13. Obviously this doesn't include external costs such as hardware and software development, packaging and the like, but it gives an interesting insight into the G1. And, even more interestingly, it's cheaper than it's competitor, the iPhone 3G: this runs in at $174.33.

How much will the iPhone cost in 2009? If the latest rumor is true you'll be able to grab a nice shiny iPhone 3g for the ultra low price of $149 while shopping for bulk quantities of every day items at your local CostCo. The unsubstantiated rumor reports that as soon as January CostCo will be slinging these iPhone ultra cheap at their stores littered across the country.
$149 seems a little bit cheap and if the rumor is true you might think that there must be some sort of awful catch like a contract for life or only when you buy $4,000 of groceries or some other ridiculous requirement. Personally I wouldn't be surprised if the rumor were true and there was no catch other than the 2 year contract you already have to sign with AT&T. CostCo iPhone for $149 would fit in perfectly with Apple's schemes to put a iPhone in every house in America.

iPhoneHellas is claiming to have confirmed from a credible source that iPhone OS v2.2 will be released this November 21st, although they say they cannot identify who their reliable source is. Some expert sites say that iPhoneHellas has made accurate predictions from credible sources in the past, others are unsure because they have not had experience with iPhoneHellas.
Anyway, here’s how the rumor goes;
First off, the supposed reliable source has indicated that the iPhone firmware v2.2 will NOT be available to Greek keyboard or Greek menu.
Also rumored, according to iPhoneHellas,
“- New look for the Safari with the Google search bar now occupying its own space on the title bar
- Toggle On / Off to disable the auto-correction
- 461 Japanese emoji icons
- Support for new languages.
- Line-in audio is activated and can be used through the headphone jack
- Google Street View, Google Transit information

The household name among bloggers everywhere Wordpress is polishing up their next update to their iPhone application with quite a few new features and they need your help. Before they push the update through the AppStore they would like to make sure it is bug free and working great for wordpress users.
The new features include:
Landscape mode with the extra wide keyboard
Link creation help
Support for editing and creating Pages
Comment moderation
Asynchronous publishing
Photo resizing options
If you want to help test the app and hurry the update towards the appstore you'll need the iPhone simulator bundled with the SDK and a copy of their app to run in the simulator. If you find any bugs Wordpress asks that you tell them by submitting a ticket.

Steve Ballmer, at the recently held developers conference at Sydney, Australia, said that Microsoft is working on a App-store like software distribution. Apple's iPhone and App-store have really stirred the Windows Mobile Market. Though there are many 'app-store like' distributions, for example - Handango, they are not something that is offered directly from Microsoft. But at the same time Ballmer also mentioned there are no plans to mimic iPhone's App-store

This hack isn't for the faint of heart. In fact, it's more a demonstration of Dr. Ralf Ackermann's technical badassery than anything practical. But its as good as it gets until Apple achieves a state of sanity and flips the switch on its Bluetooth stack to finally allow us the option of pairing a Bluetooth keyboard to the iPhone. The setup starts with a cobbled together Xbox 360 Chatpad and XBee wireless module. The good doctor then takes a Jailbroken phone (naturally) and attaches another wireless XBee module to the iPhone's jury-rigged serial port housed in an Akku enclosure. A work in progress, it will ultimately rely upon a VNC server running on the iPhone to feed keyboard input to any application of your choosing. See Apple, this is the corner of desperation that you've backed us into.

Griffin has announced updated versions of their TuneBuds Mobile and SmartTalk products for both versions of the iPhone, the iPod nano 4G, iPod touch 2G, and iPod classic (120 GB). TuneBuds are intended to be an alternative to Apple's upcoming premium in-ear headphones—both offer a built-in microphone and remote for answering calls and controlling playback, although Griffin's version costs considerably less at $40 (but that is without the dual drivers). Or, if you prefer, Griffin's updated SmartTalk accessory will give you the microphone and remote functionality with your current earbuds for only $20.

Google's fixed that one bug that had you trying to figure out synonyms for “reboot†in daily texting, lest you actually cause your G1 to reboot. The bug, which causes Android to interpret every word as a command, actually got a cure in late October, but Google's only starting to roll it out to affected G1s now. Of course, you could have technically fixed it yourself with a simple update to RC30, since it only affects G1s running firmware version RC29.

Windows Mobile 6.5 was just a whisper on a Motorola phone chief Sanjay Jha's lips week, but now that Ballmer himself has confirmed that there's at least one more rev of WinMo 6 en route before Windows Mobile 7 hits it looks like the floodgates have opened -- check out these hot screenshots, one of which seems to have been liberally dipped in Zune sauce.
We're hoping that means we'll see some Zune integration with this next generation of handsets, but we're not going to get too worked up yet (cough, Xbox). It does look quite nice, though, and we've got our fingers crossed that this revamp is more than just a pretty new home screen and app launcher -- you're way late to that party, Microsoft. No telling on when 6.5 will actually get here, but Ballms said it'll be sometime next year, so we're guessing we don't have too long to wait.

There is a new app that will allow you to turn on/off or dim all the lights in your house. The app works with a lighting system by Lutron, the same company that developed the dimmer switch in the 1960s.
The lamp in the picture above is screwed into one of Lutron’s modules. The module allows iPhone owners, with a simple app, to control their lights from across the room or from a different story in their house.
The app also allows for your house to be separated into different zones, so the many lights do not get confusing.
While the app is free and available in January, its been reported that to set up your house with all these modules would “cost several hundreds or thousands of dollars.â€
Ok, so this is app takes things to a new level and you have to admit that this would be a great way to wow friends and guests who are over visiting your home, but I wonder how many people would actually use this because of the high up front cost? I..

We speculated in our review of the new iPod touch that Apple had designs on more than just consumption of music and video, and now an interview with company VP of iPod and iPhone product marketing Greg Joswiak all but confirms that sights are set on the gaming market. In a conversation with T3, Joswiak boasts that the devices are breaking through as a viable alternative to established handhelds (such as the PSP or DS) due mostly in part to competitive software pricing and the company's content delivery system. While much of the interview focuses on iPod sales figures, it does delve into more detailed comparisons of platforms, with Joswiak stating, "The 3D graphic power here [iPod touch] is significantly greater than what you have here [picks up Nintendo DS]. So this allows people to do significantly higher quality games." While it's not unusual to hear Apple's honchos hyping their products like they just skipped across some water to heal a few lepers, it is a new trend to see the company aggressively going after gaming platform mainstays so directly. With Sony and Nintendo just getting up to speed on non-traditional content delivery, Apple may find an edge come holiday season with casual gamers -- the real question is whether the hardcore will bite.

We gamers tend to cheer getting things cheaply (to say nothing of free) but Pocket Gamer UK has a new piece lamenting that discounted games are choking the life out of the iPhone. Developers can't afford to spend a lot of time and money on a title, they argue, because they can't compete with the many, many 99-cent games on Apple's store.
PG insists that $9.99 entries like Super Monkey Ball aren't the answer, but calls for more leadership from Apple, something that, so far, the company has been unwilling to provide. Have you iPhone owners out there had much trouble separating the wheat from the chaff?

Wow, this looks like it has the potential to be a better looking game than current best looking iPhone racer Asphalt 4 Elite Racing. Hopefully, Electronic Art's iPhone racer's beauty won't be as skin deep as Asphalt's is. I still can't really control the car in that game. Hit the jump for the full gallery of the game due to hit the App store later this month.

We'd already gotten a general idea about what Google's RC29 and RC30 Android updates for the G1 did, but if you're curious about all the little details, you'll no doubt be pleased to know that the Google Android Security Team has now finally come out and explained the updates themselves. As we had heard, the RC29 update fixed a vulnerability that could potentially let malicious sites take over your browser, but it apparently also fixed two other software bugs, including a universal cross-site scripting problem that could also give someone control of the browser, and an exploit that let folks bypass Android's locking mechanism by booting the phone into safe mode. As for RC30, it apparently not only fixed that little root access issue, but two other bugs related to WebKit, which could, again, let someone take over your browser, and access to the G1's memory to, for instance, read stored cookies and gain online privileges. Google has also clarified that it intends to wait until all users have access to updates before it discloses the full details about them, so it looks like this cycle of confusion is going to be a regular occurrence for G1 owners.

Google researchers have added sophisticated voice recognition technology, adept at understanding human speech, to the company’s search software for the Apple iPhone. Google is expected to introduce a free application as early as today and experts say it could almost eliminate the need for the keyboard entirely.
New York Times' John Markoff writes, “The service can be used to get restaurant recommendations and driving directions, look up contacts in the iPhone’s address book or just settle arguments in bars. The query “What is the best pizza restaurant in Noe Valley?†returns a list of three restaurants in that San Francisco neighborhood, each with starred reviews from Google users and links to click for phone numbers and directions.â€
The query results will turn up in just seconds on a fast wireless network, and will take of advantage of features that let the iPhone determine its location. The voice recognition quality is supposed to be superb. Systems that can recognize any phrase said...

Rovio owners have been able to control their all-seeing sentry bot from their iPhone (or any other internet-connected device) from day one using WowWee's browser-based interface, but one enterprising individual apparently found that a tad lacking for his taste, so he decided to take things one big step further by building his own full-fledged iPhone / iPod touch app. In addition to giving you a larger view of the Rovio's webcam feed, the app achieves the inevitable by letting you use the iPhone or iPod touch's accelerometer to control the Rovio, which should let you give your Wiimote a rest for a while. Better still, the app is free -- you know where to get.

Google has been trickling out info about what they’re actually fixing in the G1 firmware updates. Before RC29, users were able to bypass the phone lock using safe mode. RC29 also brought WebKit up to date, presumably patching the bug [Charlie Miller] found. RC30 takes care of root console problem. Unfortunately there are very few details as to what or how particular items were broken. This release method leaves much to be desired; having the official Android Security Announcements group be the absolute last place to get security news is asinine.

If you're a discerning eater, you know the age-old mantra: everything's better with bacon. Out in Germany, they've really taken it to heart, and have made fabric gadget cases that look like they're constructed out of every gentile's favorite pork product. The Bacon Case seems to come in different sizes, at least one of which can fit the iPhone, and is selling for 25 Euro. The description's all in German, and I don't know what or who a "Frühstücksspeck" is, but the case is "Absolute Trendtasche!!!" and who am I to argue with that?

New Yorker Avi Koschitzki has tossed his own lawsuit in with the rising pile, accusing Apple and AT&T of the usual crimes (lousy 3G reception and speed, lackluster software updates) as well as a newbie: hairline cracks in the iPhone 3G's casing. We've reported on it before, but this is the first time it's showing up in a suit.

An alleged (and formerly convicted and released) rapist was picked up in Staten Island, New York after being selected from a lineup by the victim. Sources said the woman struck back during the attack by stabbing the perpetrator in the neck with a nearby iPod charger, and the man picked out of the lineup bore the twin bruises of an AC adapter on his neck. He fled the scene before police arrived, but left his yellow jacket (emblazoned with Sylvester the Cat) behind, and in addition to the victim's testimony will hopefully be enough to put this creep away for life. Or several lifetimes.

So you'd think a company like Google would probably have a free line-jumping pass when it comes to getting its iPhone apps approved for the App Store by Apple? Especially when the app in question is as cool-looking as the voice search app we got a look at Friday but has yet to hit the store? Well, sadly, you'd be wrong.

Asus is laying claim to the title for the fastest smartphone in the world, and there's little reason to doubt them. The news, though, is hollow: P565 with its 800MHz Marvell processor is objectively impressive, but underneath the oppressive, unflattering veil of Windows Mobile 6.1 it's not likely to blow anyone away. Carrying a dense 480x640 touchscreen to complement a solid range of specs — HSDPA, Wi-Fi, GPS and 24fps video recording to name a few — the P565 is nonetheless fighting a software war with hardware improvements. On the other hand, if you're one of those odd folks for whom any superlative is an automatic selling point, then this may be your ultimate handset.

Adobe is set to demonstrate a full-functioning build of Flash on Windows Mobile 6.1 today at the Adobe MAX conference, indicating that the era of hacky stop-gap measures and the mildly convincing Flash Lite may soon be coming to an end, at least for some. But what of the two most net-centric phone OSes? Android development is mercifully under way, but as far as the iPhone is concerned, all we hear is an echo:
We are working on Flash on the iPhone, but it is really up to Apple.

The iPhone Dev Team (yup, they're still around) has been a bit quiet of late, noses to the grind stone and fingers typing speedily into their respective Terminals... seeking a 3G iPhone software unlock. While they have made progress (running unsigned code on the 3G baseband, among others), a software unlock for the 3G has yet remained elusive.
With the 2.2 firmware being released soon, Apple again has set things in the update to nix the jailbreak-ability of it. The best thing, as always, for jailbreakers is to WAIT UNTIL ITS SAFE TO UPGRADE, then use the guide which we'll pop out to do so. This has typically been within days, sometimes hours, of the new firmware release.

Adobe and ARM have announced that they are working together to optimize and enable Adobe Flash Player 10 and Adobe AIR for ARM Powered devices. The optimization is targeted to the existing ARM11 family, which includes the iPhone.
They have jointly released this statement;
“The collaboration is expected to accelerate mobile graphics and video capabilities on ARM platforms to bring rich Internet applications and Web services to mobile devices and consumer electronics worldwide.â€
The details of this joint venture are somewhat lacking but it appears to be that the optimization will deliver Adobe Flash to existing mobile devices that are based on the latest ARM platforms. The optimization is set to be available in the latter half of 2009.
PC Magazine writes, “devices with at least 200 MHz processors, more than around 16 Mbytes of RAM and a 'completely capable [Web] browser' will be able to render Web-based Flash content." The iPhone of course fits

At Adobe's MAX event this morning, none other than Andy Rubin himself helped to demo Flash running on a G1, proving that it's possible (in case years of Nokias with S60 browsers haven't already done a sufficient job of showing that) and that Apple's running out of excuses. It wasn't mentioned exactly when we'd see it pushed out in an over-the-air update (or available from the Market, possibly, we suppose), but at least Rubin confirmed that Adobe and Google are pooling their collective noggins to make it happen. Ads for life insurance just aren't the same without an animated dancing dude or flying pig, so we're delighted to hear that some balance is going to be restored to the world.

If you like what the ZN5 brings to the table but roundish sliders are more your cup of tea (and when the alternative is a drab gray candybar with purple accents, we can't say we blame you), Moto's got the solution to the pollution this morning with the official announcement of the VE66. You've got that 5-megapixel autofocus cam with LED flash (as opposed to the ZN5's xenon) and image stabilization, WiFi, FM radio, Motorola's CrystalTalk noise reduction, and a navigation wheel for flying through song tracks. Interestingly, there's no mention of Moto's partnership with Kodak anywhere on the phone or the announcement -- but something tells us that won't have an effect on picture quality. Look for it to launch some time this quarter.

Edinburgh's own The Medical Phone is just about set to unleash the mobile for the true argonaut in the iCEphone. The Windows Mobile-powered "Swiss Army knife of mobiles" is dubbed a micro-notebook by its manufacturer, and while we're hesitant to go along with that, we can't deny the utility here. Sporting a Jacob's Ladder-style hinge and a full QWERTY keyboard, the unit features three independent panels, a 3-inch 400 x 240 resolution touchscreen, a mouse / tracker pad, dual SIM card slots, HSDPA support, quad-band GSM connectivity, GPS, a 3.1-megapixel camera, WiFi and a 532MHz Freescale iMX31 CPU. We're told that the phone is just weeks / months away from a release in Thailand, and it should be hitting the UK sometime in the March - April time frame for around $1,000.

The G1's taken some flak for being just a little less fashion-forward than the hottest handsets on the market, but as retail Android handsets go, it's the most beautiful thing going -- and we think that illustrious title's safe for the time being. Meet the "Dream G2" (groan) from China's Sciphone, a brick of an Android-powered handset promised for a November 28 release featuring EDGE data, WiFi, 4-megapixel cam with autofocus, 50MB of internal memory, microSD expansion to 16GB, FM radio, a QVGA display, and "the most advanced software ever engineered." Without a physical keyboard (as far as we can see, anyhow) and no software support in Android promised for a few months at minimum, it's unclear how you'll input text, but hey, the release is still a good ten days away -- maybe these guys are good at thinking on their feet.

Men, be careful with the lies your tell your wives. See, there's this thing called the Internet which is... uh, like a series of tubes connecting everybody. On The Internets you'll find services like Google and places to discuss just about anything imaginable, even the iPhone. So when you tell your wife that there's a bug in the iPhone that causes photos of your naughty bits to "sometimes automatically attach themselves to an e-mail address and appear in the sent folder, even though no e-mail was ever sent," well, it won't take long before she's on the Apple Discussion forums asking if this is true. Buddy, we hope you get what you deserve

After a flurry of leaks and announcements caught our attention last year, we've heard nary a peep from Toshiba about its multi-faceted device since. Suffice to say that's it's out in parts of Europe and countries with a penchant for the backward "R" and "N." Great, but what is it and how well does it do what it does; that's the convoluted question. Fortunately, IntoMobile went hands on with the USB memory stick / alarm clock with snooze / MP3 player / 7.2Mbps HSDPA USB modem / tri-band GSM cellphone and came away with the opinion that "the device is excellent." It pulled a respectable 2.7Mbps off O2's UK network and performed reasonably well as a "backup phone." The 160MB of storage for MP3 / AAC music playback was disappointing but it served its purpose in a pinch. Still, that's a lot of device for £140.

LG may release some crazy handsets on a global level, but believe it or not, the LG Incite has arrived at AT&T as what could be considered the first full-fledged LG smartphone in the States. And it's not a bad first showing. The 3G Windows Mobile handset features a 3-inch touchscreen with full virtual keyboard and haptic feedback, along with aGPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3MP camera, and microSD port. The Incite is available now for $199.99 with a 2-year agreement.

It's no secret that Adobe is playing with Flash products on Android, but at the Adobe MAX 2008 developer conference that company showed off Flash Player 10 running on Android (and the T-Mobile G1 phone, of course). As you can see, the implementation isn't the silky smooth experience we've become so accustomed to on our full blown computers, but vector-based zooming stays intact. Now just to get a solid release date.

The best ideas really are the simplest ones. I don't want to carry around a 17-inch notebook (does anyone?) and I'm not an accountant, but sometimes I miss the numberpad, like when I'm dropping in a credit card number or doing a stupid Excel spreadsheet, and using two hands to pound digits is just annoying next to the numpad's one-handed zen. Enter numberkey, an iPhone app that turns it into an ad hoc wireless numberpad for your Mac using Wi-Fi. There's a small desktop client that goes with it, but it's all only $1.99. And it comes with four skins to cover every style of modern Mac keyboards to keep even the most OCD weirdos happy.

That Google Mobile for iPhone with talky talky search action is now up. Our own impressions of it are good. When you're not in a noisy place (or another phone is ringing in the background) it can pretty much translate anything you say into a meaningful phrase. "Gizmodo" was understood, surprisingly, as was "bear market" and "bare ass". That's right, it was smart enough to tell the difference between the words bear and bare, depending on the context. Also super cool? The jibberish noise it makes when it's searching for something. If you're an iPhone user, you should go get it now

Are you a socially awkward individual that loves eating out but hates talking to real people on the phone? Then you probably already know about OpenTable, the awesome online reservation site. Now they've got a free iPhone app that's even slicker and easier to use than their actual (or mobile) site. It'll find the restaurants closest to you and throw 'em on a Google map along with their available times—a few presses later, and you're booked (even if you don't have an OpenTable account).

We played with Gas Cubby, the car maintenance tracking tool for iPhone, and can say that the $5 is a pretty low price to pay if you really want to keep your ride in good condition. Among its many hardcore features are gas price fill-up tracking and graphing, service tracking and data (insurance, VIN) storage. We all know that we're supposed to get and document regular service on our cars, but who the hell remembers? By tracking your gas purchases (which you get much more frequently), Gas Cubby will remind you of when those tires need rotating or when filters need replacement. Pretty damn good for $5, I'd say.

Google recently updated their Google Mobile App with a couple new features. Voice Search automatically starts listening when you raise the phone to your ear. Just say what you’re looking for, and it will poll Google and return the results. The app leverages Google’s voice recognition engine, which they’ve been training with Goog-411. [Andy Baio] has been experimenting with audio transcription and was curious what the new app was doing behind the scenes. He started by sniffing the packets as they traversed his network. Unfortunately, the size of the data packets transmitted is so small that he’s almost certain he’s missing something. He’d appreciate any help in this endeavor. Part of the problem might be Google getting special treatment and using undocumented iPhone SDK features.

Uh well um. Better extremely late than never? The lack off MMS has been one of the biggest complaints about the iPhone since day one way back in 2007. Who is going to bring MMS to the masses? Swirly MMS 1.2 already has via Cydia but what about all those poor fools that haven't jailbroken yet? While Apple is leaving its users hanging in the wind Mobispine is working hard to create a MMS app that Apple will allow out the door.
The other day the rumor initially broke on MacWorld that Swedish-Finnish carrier Telia is on the verge (read with in the next two months) of pushing their MMS app out the door and into the eager hands of people subscribed to..

The Dev Team announced today that they have gotten one step closer to the iPhone 3g software unlock. Over the past months they have made a lot of progress in freeing the 3g iPhone and have gotten to the point where they " . . . have a clear path to follow, and 'all' that remains is the implementation."
What have the devs accomplished so far?
First they accomplished unsigned code execution on 3G baseband
Next they reverted 01.45 baseband to previous versions

You log into the iTunes Store. You buy music. It only plays on your authorized computers. In theory this helps keep illegal distribution of music over the internet down but in reality it is just a hinderance to everyday users that are required to register their iPhones and iPods and computers to play their own files that they legally own.
Apple started catching onto the idea that this whole DRM music thing isn't a concept to be continuing into the future and reached an agreement with the label EMI last May and starting the "iTunes Plus" service allowing purchase of DRM free music from the iTunes store. Since then EMI along with other major labels like Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, and Sony BMG have started offering their music DRM free via routes other than iTunes like Napster, Amazon, and MySpace music.
While the iTunes store doesn't seem to be doing half bad in sales in the last year Apple needs to make the move to DRM free music across all of its..

VMware MVP is a thin layer of software that is embedded on a mobile phone to decouple the applications and data from the underlying hardware. It is optimized to run efficiently on low power consuming and memory constrained mobile phones. The MVP currently supports a wide range of real-time and rich operating systems including Windows CE 5.0 and 6.0, Linux 2.6.x, Symbian 9.x, eCos, µITRON NORTi and µC/OS-II. VMware Mobile Virtualization Platform will help handset vendors reduce development time and get mobile phones to market faster. In addition, end users will benefit by being able to run multiple personalities — for example, one for personal use and one for work use on the same phone. Read more @ VMWare.com.

We knew Orb was working on an iPhone port of its media-streaming app, and it looks like Orb 2.0 just stealthily went live in the App Store. The $10 app lets TV junkies watch live TV from a tuner connected to a Windows PC, as well as stream music, videos, and photos from their libraries. Even cooler, Orb allows you to monitor a webcam, so you can finally nail those Diet Coke thieves from the comfort of your cube (or keep an eye on your infant, whatever.) Sadly there's no date for the Mac and Linux versions, but Orb says they're on the way. Alright Sling, looks like the ball's in your court.

For home theater junkies who've been having a difficult time taking the Apple TV seriously, you should definitely have a look at what the latest software update brings to the dinner table. First off, we should warn you that any non-Apple TV software (like, you know, Boxee) will be banished should you choose to update, but if you're kosher on that front, we'll continue on. Apple's changelog notes that AirTunes streaming is now enabled, meaning that tunes can be streamed from the STB to AirPort Express speakers or other ATV units nearby. Additionally, the box can now learn other remotes, meaning that you can probably get your universal remote to handle this bugger, too. The last big addition is that Playlists in iTunes can now be seen on Apple TV, and there's also support for volume control in Music. Grab the download from within your box now if you dare, and feel free to chime in with any other noteworthy changes you happen upon.

Apple has patented a new display technology that will allow their iPhones to have always-on displays with almost no battery cost whatsoever. This doesn't mean the whole display would be lit at all times. In reality, only part of it would be activated using a secondary backlight system located under the main one. According to Apple, the objective is to give feedback to the user at all times, even when the main display is turned off:

Well, shit. There goes my free time. This has somehow evaded my notice up til now – most likely because the words "iPhone" and "game" are enough to set my eyeballs a’ rollin’ – but it appears that EA are bringing SimCity to the iPhone. And not just any version, a version of SimCity 3000 (or at least one that looks like it), probably the best of the bunch. It'll be the same basic deal, only with touch controls, extending to the use of two-finger dragging for things like establishing zones. EA say it should hit the App Store sometime in December, for the "yeah, I'll finally buy an iPhone game" price of $10.

With several hundred thousand downloads, Aurora Feint's gamers have been begging for a full-blown paid version of the free-to-play iPhone role-playing game. It looks like they'll be getting it on Friday or next week at the latest.
Aurora Feint II: The Arena will set iPhone users back $10, but will include asynchronous massively-multiplayer gaming, leader board rankings, messaging and player walls. The Arena will be the second of three proposed games based on the world of Aurora Feint, according to the developers.
"We had an overwhelming response to Aurora Feint: The Beginning and we are thankful for the support of our huge fan base" said Peter Relan, Chairman of Aurora Feint Inc. "The iPhone has created an incredible platform for gaming that Jason and Danielle have taken to a new level with the introduction of an Asynchronous MMO World."
No word on what the mysterious third Aurora Feint game will be, but here's a run down on what you'll get for your $10 with Arena:

It looks like Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords will be hitting the App Store next month for $9.95.
TransGaming tells us that the game is working its way through the approval process as we speak. Challenge of the Warlords has been optimized to run on the iPhone and iPod Touch, making full use of the tap features. The game will include new story lines, new characters and new conquests.

It's here. Google Street View and over the air Podcast downloads from iTunes. Yup, public transit and walking directions too and the ability to share your location via email. Bug fixes, Safari enhancements, the ability to toggle auto-text correction, and plenty more... just like we heard in the pre-rumor run-up. Now get outta here, your iTunes update awaits.
Update: Added some screenshots of the most notable new features after the break. The Street View implementation seems solid though we miss the compass feature found on T-Mobile's G1. Also, the real-estate saved by moving the Google search field next to the URL field in Mobile Safari is a welcome and obvious change. As to auto-correction, well, that's personal taste. Tipster Vizcaya also noticed that Apple added a new option to rate an App when you delete it from your phone. You can also view multiple screenshots of applications available in the App Store.
Update 2: The other big update, Podcast downloads, works just as you'd hope and should further promote the spontaneous isolation we all crave. A few shots of that added after the break.

If you have an old, dead iPod kicking around and are also looking for a way to disguise your disgusting cigarette addiction, here's a nice way to kill two birds with one stone: hide your cigarettes in your iPod! It's a pretty straightforward operation, involving getting rid of the guts in your iPod and then filling said iPod with cigarettes. A better DIY project? Quit smoking. Just saying.

Ever been out drinking and unsure if you’re too intoxicated to get in your car and drive yourself home? Well it seems there is a new way to avoid those DUIs and it involves hacking your iPhone and calling a cab. There is a new iPhone hack that can actually let you know if you’re past the legal limit.
The hack does involve attaching a mouthpiece to your iPhone and turning it into a make shift breathalyzer. The Breathalyzer computes your blood alcohol level and says that you’re either drunk or good to go. If you’re drunk it gives you a nice and big button to push to call a cab.
The guys over at Tellart said they made this video of the hack with a store bought breathalyzer attached to an iPhone 3G. They also say they successfully did this by experimenting with Tellart’s newest Sketchtool: NADA Mobile.
So I have no idea how easy, hard or even truly possible this hack is to do, but this would be a fun device to pull out at the bar and use on all your drunk friends.

Recently we were sent a PR email about an iPhone app called BdEmailer. No big deal, press releases about new iPhone applications show up in our box in large bundles every day -- but this one was different. According to the release, the program is the "the first wide email iPhone app that supports client SMTP." That means, in essence, that it duplicates an exact function of Apple's Mail application on the iPhone and touch. That's kind of a huge deal, because up until this point we've been led to believe that this duplication of functionality is one of the company's red flags when it comes to approval. Now mind you, we're not complaining. The idea of having more apps to choose from for doing things like sending email is a great idea, but Apple... what the hell is going on? You refused MailWrangler and Podcaster for similar reasons, yet BdEmailer passes through your review process, SMTP functionality intact? This means one of two things as far as we can tell -- either you've relaxed your policies on duplicate functionality, or you've gotten incredibly lazy when it comes to approving applications. We're inclined to believe it's the latter, as BdEmailer has a fair share of bugs that need working out, but really, people need some clarification here on what will and won't pass -- and moving the goalpost all the time isn't going to help.

OK, maybe I'm getting a bit too excited about Aurora Feint II: The Arena. But it is a Puzzle Quest-ish, multiplayer-ish iPhone game.
And now it's live. That's right you can hop onto iTunes this second and download it at its holiday price of $7.99. I'm all over it as we speak. I'll try to get something up Monday in the way of impressions. Sure beats yelling at Skate It and my Wii Fit board all weekend long. *mumblemumblemumble*

The DevTeam has released Pwnage Tool and QuickPwn 2.2 (Windows folks only have QuickPwn).
We are uploading mirrors now, and will get you links ASAP. I'll have a full guide on upgrading from 2.1 to 2.2 here in the next hour.
edit: 3G Jailbreak Guide is here
A few cautions:
DO NOT USE QUICKPWN if you want to have a potential software unlock on your 3G iPhone anytime soon. QuickPwn will update your baseband to the new one included in the 2.2 update. This == bad. Use PwnageTool to create a custom 2.2 firmware. OS X guide will be up soon.

NES.app emulates the hardware in a Nintendo entertainment system, allowing you to play games on your iPhone. There are many public domain, home-brew games available which have been written for the Nintendo platform, and depending on your country of origin, you may be entitled to play images of commercial games which you rightfully own.
The author does not condone the illegal piracy of copyrighted Nintendo games, and provides no support in obtaining or using pirated images.
NES.app uses an emulator core I call NESCore, which I've forked from pNESx and InfoNES and re-engineered as a highly-portable and high-performance Nintendo emulator core.
In order to use NES.app, you will need ROM images of games written for the Nintendo Entertainment System platform. ROM images are files containing the dumped instruction code from a physical cartridge, or compiled code from a public domain / home-brew game. In some cases, and based on your location, you may be legally entitled to posess a ROM image of a game that you presently own. Check your local, state, and federal laws.
Features
Multitouch: Use the directional pad + A + B, or other combinations
Zapper Tap: Tap objects on the screen to shoot them
Full Screen: Enlarge your NES picture to the max possible
Save State: Save an instant snapshot of your game and come back to it later
Game Genie: Use Game Genie cheat codes
... and many more

If you haven't heard the news yet, iPod touch users were denied Google Street View when the firmware 2.2 update dropped this week. Sad. But here's some happy: iPod Touch Fans site member timmyj9 cooked up a hack to enable the feature. If XML editing and jailbreaking are music to your ears, you can do it too by following timmyj9's instructions.

We've heard a few things about the Mobispine MMS app supposedly being developed for the iPhone, but the company's just answered a couple of questions, and we thought we'd give you a quick rundown. Interestingly, the app will utilize Apple's announced but delayed push notification, which Mobispine says is due "pretty soon," though carriers may use SMS notification in lieu of the service. The company says that the app will be carrier-branded, and that it will be up to them how much to charge you, the MMS-starved consumer. Mobispine says that the software will "probably" be made available through the App Store, "probably" because it's still in some vague phase of development, and has yet to be approved by Apple. Just let us know when the thing is ready, okay guys?

Some good news for iPod touch owners: one enterprising individual going by the nom de mod timmyj9 has figured out how to enable the Street View functionality in the media player's version 2.2 firmware -- albeit with some glitches. If your iPod touch is jailbroken, and if you enjoy this sort of illegitimate activity, feel free to hit the link below for some thrilling step-by-step directions. And if that wasn't exciting enough for you, we've just espied a video that pits the original iPhone and the iPhone 3G against both a first and a second generation iPod touch in a fight to the death (or more accurately, TouchSport Tennis). Admittedly, this is not the most scientific of benchmarks, but the clip (after the break) clearly shows the 532MHz second generation iPod touch rocking the 3D graphics faster than its 412MHz iPhone 3G counterpart. As expected, neither the original iPhone nor the first generation iPod fare nearly as well as their siblings.

According to CrunchGear's John Biggs, the second-ever Android cellphone doesn't come from Motorola, Nokia or Sony Ericsson. The Zzzphone is a full-QWERTY keyboard Chinese slider which apparently runs the Android operating system, and has a web site designed in 1994. Not only it runs Android, but it also seems to have mutant powers. This thing can do absolutely everything:

We already knew that the latest iPod touch featured the fastest processing of its siblings (a 532MHz-clocked processor vs 412MHz on the original iPhone, the original iPod touch and even the new iPhone 3G). But we were surprised to hear from software developers that the latest iPod touch can render character models with nearly double the polygons of the original iPhone, a trend that's impacting game development now and probably more so moving forward.

Emoji: if you've never heard of it, that's because you're probably not living in Japan, 12 years old, and a highly social schoolgirl. An emoticon standard that is widely used in the country, it was included in the iPhone 2.2 firmware on the SoftBank network, but not for anyone else. Apparently fed up with his lack of ability to graphically express his numerous LOLs, a developer has figured out a simple tweak to enable these icons system-wide, no matter which carrier you're with. Naturally, to show anything other than unintelligible strings of Unicode the recipient's phone has to support Emoji emoticons, but apparently all 2.2 iPhones, hacked or not, can display the icons. The patching process, after the jump, isn't terribly complicated.

Speaking of Android, you G1 fans may recall that the phone launched with zero-point-zero Exchange functionality, pissing off more than one business person (at least two or three). The Android masters said that the platform would happily support third-party Exchange integration, and lo, here it comes. This week, NitroDesk rolled out TouchDown, "the world's first on-the-phone solution for accessing your Exchange Server email, contacts and calendar on Android-powered handsets."

Maybe I'm just writing this because I'm hungry, but damn if I'm not excited about the Zagat To Go app for iPhone that launched this week. Zagat may sometimes offer too many suggestions, but I find it useful when I limit geography, or as a resource for validating my own foodie guesswork. This version shows photos of the restaurants, links to their sites, and even lets you make reservations with a click, where available. It's $10, a hefty premium over free alternatives OpenTable and Yelp, but I'm gonna go snatch it up anyway. If you've already tried it, hit us with a comment or two.

The iPhone is being widely touted as the next big Gaming Thing. It is definitely true that the JesusPhoneâ„¢ is a capable gaming device but if tests performed by Handheld Games are correct, the new iPod Touch is a much better performer.
The new iPod Touch 2G runs at 532MHz as opposed to the 412MHz of earlier models - including the iPhone 3G (the G's mean something different, don't worry about it) and Handheld Games suspect there may be undocumented differences in the GPU speeds as well.
After some experimentation, the four iterations of the device are ranked as follows:
1. iPod Touch 2nd Generation
2. iPhone 3G
3. iPhone (original)
4. iPod Touch 1st Generation

Zodttd who amusingly has used (for want of a better word) our Home of Homebrew Slogan has released a new Beta release of his GBA Emu for iphone, now to download a beta release you need to pay him for the priveldge which may not sit well for the homebrew purists.
heres whats new:
Although I've been sick all day today, I managed to fix the bug stopping me from updating gpSPhone. Then something truly awesome happened... I noticed I was clearing the instruction cache in gpSPhone's dynarec incorrectly.
Performance has been vastly improved due to this fix!
You may have noticed in previous versions of gpSPhone that games would seem to have improved performance after doing similar routines over and over again. This was due to the instruction cache of the dynarec being cleared incorrectly and now that it's fixed, you should have much smoother gameplay.
Both landscape and portrait modes are included and I've fixed a few bugs, implemented multitouch, and fixed the controller issue with Metroid Fusion.
What's the catch? Well sound playback has gaps in it, but I believe it's due to my code for handling those odd pauses in gameplay described above. I will get that worked on. I removed the bookmarks option as it really didn't seem to be used. What may be a dealbreaker though, is the removal of the options panel. This is temporary though. In the meantime I suggest using the volume controls on your iPhone/iPod to control volume. I want to have a good way of inputting cheatcodes before I make a release with the options screen.

It's just a demo right now, but Ryo Shimizu's ZeptoPad 2.0 whiteboard app looks pretty promising. We already love collaborative drawing apps like Netsketch, but Ryo's whiteboard adds a couple of interesting tweaks—the ability to watch the whiteboard live via a web interface or on what looks like a local client, and then save everything to PDF when you're finished. If collaborators are not limited to being on the same wi-fi network, which is how these apps often work, sign us up. Barring any Apple hold-ups (that's never happened, right?), ZeptoPad should hit the store next weekend.

The latest iPhone 2.2 operating system fixes many things, but something is still missing: Push notification services. Once again, Apple has missed the opportunity to enable push notification in a new update, which is specially bad after they failed to meet their self-imposed September deadline. That makes it almost two months late now. So what's the problem? Is the cause just a technical glitch or maybe there are other hidden, last-minute reasons behind it?

We've heard that it's been showing up on doorsteps and in stores for a few days now, but T-Mobile has just officially given the word that the G1 is now available in white to complement bronze and the especially personality-free black (not to say there's anything wrong with that, black G1 owners). The price, hardware, and software are all the same, so if you thought this release might somehow magically bring a soft keyboard with it, think again. Any guesses what -- if any -- future colors we might see on this puppy?

You've probably seen the 3G iPhone advert that shows Apple's baby browsing around web pages, fixing GPS locations and downloading files 'really fast'.
The ad states "So what's so great about 3G? It's what helps you get the news, really fast. Find your way, really fast. And download pretty much anything, really fast. The new iPhone 3G. The internet, you guessed it, really fast."
Well, following a number of complaints from customers about the fact that their iPhone doesn't even come close to the sorts of speeds shown, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has rapped the company on the knuckles and ruled that the advert be removed in its current form.
Apple's argument is that the speed shown is relative rather than absolute in comparing the 3G model to the old 2G iPhone but despite the fact that it does state that 'network performance will vary by location' the ASA weren't buying it and said that it would be likely to mislead.
This isn't the first time Apple has 'exaggerated' the features of its products and the ruling leaves the company rather red-faced so soon after its rather puerile mickey-taking of Microsoft in a recent campaign.

Okay, any talk that consistency in Apple's approval process for the App Store has improved definitely has to be put on hold at this point; first we had that BdEmailer situation that duplicates functionality (albeit shoddily) of the iPhone's own email capabilities, and now we have official confirmation that Google did a no-no when it slipped its voice-powered search through the checkpoint. The problem is that enabling the automatic voice detection requires use of an undocumented API call for the proximity sensor that Apple neither guarantees nor approves use of, meaning firmware updates can break it at will. In and of itself, that's not a huge indiscretion on Google's part since they're probably committed to keeping it up-to-date, but the real issue is that this violates an explicit rule of the App Store that bans the use of undocumented calls. Apple, guys, seriously: if you want to be jerks about what gets through and what doesn't, fine -- but at least do it consistently so it doesn't look like you're favoring companies run by members of your own executive board (or in the case of BdEmailer, companies that are doing a bang-up job of making your own products look better).

Bugz is the first iPhone game released by Didev Studios.
Bugz is a game of skill and chance. The aim of the game is to pop as many bugz as possible by starting a chain reaction of bugz popping.
To do this you have to tap the screen to create an initial pop which will expand and then shrink again.
If your pop hits another bug then that bug will pop, starting a chain reaction effect.
Features
• 102 levels of addictive gameplay!
• Multiple profile management with ability to save and load your current state.
• Online high score table - upload your score and view worldwide high scores in game.
• Custom soundtrack.
• Prefer to listen to your iPod while playing? Simply toggle the setting.
• Hours of replay value.
Screenshots and videos are available on the Bugz website at http://www.didev-studios.com/bugz/

Last night Apple released a new QuickTime update that allows standard definition iTunes movies to play over the new MacBooks' DisplayPort and onto older displays.
This somewhat addresses a highly publically criticized issue about how the new portables would not play legitimately purchased movies on external displays without HDCP support. However, as of now, the update is only for unibody MacBooks and MacBook Pros as well as second-revision MacBook Airs.
This update should allow for the inclusion of any display that attaches through the VGA adapter and should also allow playback from DVI-equipped displays that don’t have built in HDCP encryption. HD isn't affected as of yet since TV shows usually don’t require the use of copy protection formats.

So, get a load of this. While tinkering within the iPhone 2.2 SDK, ArsTechnica discovered a neat little tidbit that could lead to some pretty extensible applications. In essence, the MPTVOutWindow class enables your iPhone to beam out video to a connected TV rather than the built-in screen. Of course, dock-connecting iPods / iPhones have been sending out videos for ages now, but this could actually enable applications to be used on the big screen. Sadly, the current code won't allow screen interaction while the TV out function is active, but the accelerometer is still a go.

For now, Android's got about as much enterprise support as a Sidekick (well okay, a little more, but not much) -- so that's got to be keeping G1s out of the hands of throngs who are too tied-down to Exchange, Notes, or some equally stuffy piece of server-side software to be able to make the switch. China's QiJi feels your pain, which is where the company's surprisingly okay-looking i6 comes into play: the handset supports both Android and Windows Mobile, although you can't dual-boot -- you've got to choose one and run with it until you decide to install the other. It packs a 624MHz processor, 256MB of ROM, 128MB of RAM, a trackball, and -- in lieu of a QWERTY slide -- an on-screen Chinese keyboard with stylus support that we haven't seen before. Android, we love ya and all, but until you go through puberty, this mutli-platform support is just about the best thing we've ever heard.

Oh wow, we're embarrassingly excited by this news: Yoot Saito is working on what appears to be a reworked version of Seaman 2 for the iPhone called Gabo. Though it's only headed to Japan at the moment, a worldwide release seems to be in the cards, judging from a shoddy translation of Saito's blog. The only bad news is we'll have to remember for 364 days to give thanks for the universe's kindness.
Though there doesn't seem to be any voice recognition in Gabo, what Saito's currently showing off (in a video you can see after the break) looks just delightful.

We knew this day would eventually come, but somehow we're still misting up a little -- Linux has been ported to the iPhone and iPod touch. Dev Team member planetbeing is the mastermind in charge of bringing everyone's favorite open-source OS to Apple's handhelds, and while it's a little rough around the edges (read: no touchscreen drivers, sound, or WiFi / cell radio support), it's definitely the first step on the road to hacking nirvana. The team is hard at work, and it even sounds like they're thinking about porting Android in the near future (!), so hit the read link to try it out and lend a hand if you can -- or just head on past the break for a quick vid of the port in all its text-scrolling glory.

iPhone DOOM has been in the works for over a year now with more or less success. For all of you that have been waiting for this for the last year it seems that the game is finally being refined into a more solid and playable version!
Steven Stroughton Smith of iphonedoom and Zodttd of Zodttd.com have been collaborating over the last few weeks to push out a playable iPhone DOOM! While it isn't perfect yet this version has controls that are quite a bit more usable than the previous public versions and the game's performance is quite good.

Joost lost the video war a while ago, thinking a P2P app that imitated TV would be the way people wanted to watch TV and movies on their computer. They were wrong, and only recently rectified the mistake. It's probably too late for them. But their new iPhone app, which streams over 46,000 videos including full movies like Men in Black and Starship Troopers for free over Wi-Fi, is actually kind of exciting.
