Texas based Spacetime Studios is preparing to license out a 3D MMO engine that it says can unite players on otherwise incompatible devices.
Following an investment injection from Insight Venture Partners, the developer is planning to extend its technology platform and “pioneer new functionality for the mobile multiplayer gaming marketâ€.
Spacetime’s 3D MMO game engine, which will soon be available for developers, is said can allow for players on PC, Android and iOS to interact in the same world.
“The Spacetime Engine offers seamless global multiplayer gameplay to anyone with an iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch over 3G, Edge, and wireless networks, [and] we plan to add Android and PC users to the mix.†said the studio’s co-founder Anthony Sommers.
“In the near future, it will be possible to be on the bus in California with your iPhone, playing with someone in a park in France on their Android device, and both be playing in the same server set with someone in South Korea on their PC.â€

Details of the launch plans of Microsoft's new Windows Phone 7 have been revealed by the Wall Street Journal.
The launch is said to be "centered" in New York with events in other cities simultaneously according to people "familiar with the launch plans" cited by the WSJ.
The launch event will take place on the 11th of October and US carrier AT&T will begin selling them a month later.
Echoing an exclusivity deal with the iPhone, AT&T has also secured an exclusive period in the vitally important US market although it's expected not to last as long as the enduring iPhone exclusivity.

It looks like iPhone users are not immune to the types of data leaks recently discovered on the Android platform. Researchers looked at the top free applications available from the App Store and discovered that '68% of these applications were transmitting UDIDs to servers under the application vendor's control each time the application is launched.' The iPhone's Unique Device ID, or UDID, cannot be changed, nor can its transmission be disabled by the user.

Android may be climbing the charts when it comes to market share, and the Market may be quickly approaching the 100,000 apps mark, but the whole thing is hardly a global proposition. As of earlier this week, paid apps were able to be purchased in just 14 countries, submitted by developers of just nine nationalities. That changes now, with Google adding 20 countries to its list of approved submitters, meaning developers living in 29 nations are eligible to submit paid apps to the Market. Over the next two weeks the purchasing of those apps will be flipped on for users in 18 countries, 32 in all that will have the "buy" button enabled -- music to the ears of Java app developers everywhere. Which flags are newly embracing app capitalism?

The Apple rumor that keeps on giving -- the touchscreen iMac -- has just been given another shot of monger juice. DigiTimes (who else) cites industry sources who claim again that Sintek Photonics is shipping Apple touchpanels to sample for use in a future 20-plus-inch iMac. Specifically, the panels are of the projected capacitance type (same as iPhone/iPod touch/iPad) and integrate the touch sensor with the glass cover for reduced thickness and weight while exhibiting "good" viewing angles and brightness. While the image above, extracted from an Apple patent, gives us a clue as to how a touchscreen iMac might be used, we remain unconvinced of its advantages (drawing stylus, anyone?). Then again, we're sure Apple has lots of whacky products in house for R&D so why not one more.

Well, there you have it, kids. Your new favorite hobby has gone from having a confirmed exploit to a legitimate jailbreak in the space of a mere couple of days. MuscleNerd reports that the Shatter jailbreaking endeavor has claimed its latest iOS victim today, though as you can see for yourself, it's "not quite ready for prime time yet." App installations still have to be figured out, but at least the door's been opened for making some good, if not magical, things happen.

You know what the biggest problem with Xbox Live is? No, it's not that pesky friend limit -- it's the fact that I'm not connected when I'm getting my half-dairy mocha whip down at the Starbucks. Or how when I'm at the grocery store, picking up some veggies, I can't trash-talk with my bros and stay plugged into my virtual world. You know Neo was, like, hooked up to the Matrix the entire time. How do you think he got so good at it?
In all seriousness, Microsoft general manager Matt Thompson thinks that being connected all of the time is the biggest selling point of the new Windows Phone 7 OS, Venture Beat reports. That's what Microsoft hopes will give it an edge over Apple and its iPhone.
"Clearly the phone is you, so the most unique thing we're trying to do is bring Xbox Live so you can carry the online 'you' into the rest of the world," he said. Sure, it makes sense -- a gamer spends a lot of time building up Gamerscore and participating in that virtual world, so giving them a way to spend even more time there seems like a given. We just think Thompson's selling the whole thing short: it's all about that FM radio. Finally, we can listen to NPR on our phone!

Until recently, most studies, surveys, polls, market analysis, and good old fashioned word on the street all suggested the same thing - the iPhone 4 is 2010's biggest attention-getter in the mobile space and, arguably, the most popular and talked-about smartphone ever produced.
But, in recent weeks, the iPhone has seemingly begun to lose its stranglehold on consumers. Based on the latest findings of ChangeWave Research about smartphone preferences, only 38% of prospective smartphone buyers surveyed want iOS on their next smartphone. Relatively speaking, that figure represents a significant 12 point drop from this past June, a month in which the new 4th generation iPhone was unveiled and a whopping 50% of all would-be smartphone buyers said they wanted an iPhone. Although the "freshness" of the 4th gen iPhone release in June likely skewed the results of the survey to the upside, the precipitous decline is noteworthy, nonetheless.

If you haven't set foot in an Apple store during the last 48 hours, perhaps you're unaware of a big return at the tech giant's retail outlets. With the conclusion of the free bumper program this past Thursday, September 30th, Apple waited only a matter of hours to begin restocking the shelves of their retail stores with bumpers for sale.
So the bumpers back, having been missing in action in both retail stores and the online Apple store during the free case program that, for a time, received every bit as much attention as the new iPhone. It now appears that as far as Apple is concerned, Antennagate is officially over. And the company is doing everything in its power to get past the issue and return to business as usual, which of course, involves selling the bumpers that, for many, curbed the reception troubles of the 4th generation Apple smartphone. Still, Apple has made it clear that it will address continuing problems on a case-by-case - no pun intended - basis.

Yet another really complex Apple patent has been uncovered by Jack Purcher, who runs the Patently Apple site, and this one's a doozy. Apple's apparently working on new touchscreen controls which it calls "virtual input tools." The screen would display an image of, say, a trackpad in 2D or 3D, and you'd use the virtual trackpad the same way you'd use a physical trackpad. I'm having a pretty hard time wrapping my head around this one

Traditionally, the low tech, low cost nature of mobile platforms made casual titles a natural fit for publishers and players. But with today’s powerful processors, 3D graphics and new touchscreen controls, EA have begun forging a new wave of core games on mobile platforms.
At an event in London, EA took us through their mobile line-up, which included FIFA 11, EA Sports MMA, Mirror’s Edge and more.
FIFA 11 (iPhone, iPod Touch)
New licenses, animations and motion-captured players were EA’s core features for the mobile version of their ever-popular football franchise. The bright screen of an iPhone 4 certainly backed up those claims when we tried it ourselves. A virtual analogue stick is used to control players, while actions, like passing and shooting, are selected with you other hand. The choice of 500 league teams and 50 real world stadiums should give the game credibility in the eyes of sports fans.
EA Sports MMA (iPhone)
THQ’s swings have failed to leave their opponent groggy. Using assets from the console version, EA Mobile are launching a counter attack with their inaugural MMA mobile game. Producer Nick Wong emphasized that control has been a top priority for the development team. In MMA mobile the screen is split into four invisible quadrants each corresponding to your fighter’s limbs. A combination of taps and swipes are used to perform attacks. In our hands-on, we sampled standing, clinch and submission portions. Control for each discipline is context specific. Going for familiarity, EA have fighters such as Jason Miller and Randy Couture. EA Sports MMA is an ambitious offering and evidence that EA believe the time is right for more complex mobile games.
Mirror’s Edge (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad)
Though it defeats the purpose of the console game’s design, Mirror’s Edge appears to have been far more successful as a side-scrolling platformer than a slightly dodgy first-person one. Of all EA’s action games on show this one was immediately engrossing. Swipes are used to make Faith jump, duck and roll her way across stark white rooftops. Though noticeably jagged, there are reams of detail to the 3D cityscapes and buildings that sustain your acrobatics. Its looks alone will attract attention, and, in the wake of Canabalt, a more traditional platformer could be precisely what handheld players want. Get a taste for side-scrolling Mirror’s Edge at www.mirrorsedge2d.com.
R-Type (iPhone, iPod Touch)
IGN have ranked R-Type in their all-time Top 10 Toughest Games to Beat, and they’re not wrong. Rose-tinted nostalgia must have been a major part in this arcade relic getting a mobile revival. You hold the device flat, tilting it to move your ship about on the default setting. Ported by DotEmu, all eight levels from the original arcade version are present and a trio of control methods. Unlikely to spread through word of mouth due to its punishing difficulty, brand cachet will have to suffice.
Yahtzee (iPad)
Yet another reason not to buy those tempting travel editions while you’re waiting in the duty-free lounge. Yahtzee on iPad is captivating thanks to its colourful HD visuals. In this classic dice game the aim is to score the most points with the sum of five dice. You can play head-to-head or pass the iPad around, but the novelty of touchscreen dice shaking coupled with convincing sound effects makes the illusion of playing virtual Yahtzee exciting in itself.

When Apple addressed a congressional inquiry on privacy in July, the company claimed that it couldn't actually track a particular iPhone in real time, as its transactions were anonymous and thoroughly randomized. Bucknell University network admin Eric Smith, however, theorizes that third-party application developers and advertisers may not have the same qualms, and could be linking your device to your name (and even your location) whenever they transmit data. Smith, a two-time DefCon wardriving champ, studied 57 top applications in the iTunes App Store to see what they sent out, and discovered that some fired off the iPhone's UDID and personal details in plaintext (where they can ostensibly be intercepted), including those for Amazon, Chase Bank, Target and Sam's Club, though a few were secured with SSL. Though UDIDs are routinely used by apps to store personal data and combat piracy, what Smith fears is that a database could be set up linking these UDIDs to GPS coordinates or GeoIP, giving nefarious individuals or organizations knowledge of where you are.
It's a scary idea, but before you direct hate Apple's way, it's important to note that Cupertino's not necessarily the one to blame. iOS is arguably the best at requiring users to opt-in to apps that perform GPS tracking; transmitting the UDID and account information together publicly is strictly against the rules; and we'd like to think that if users provide their personal information to an application developer in the first place, they'd understand what they're doing. Of course, not all users monitor those things closely, and plaintext transmission of personal details is obviously a big no-no.
Smith's piece opens and closes on the idea that Apple's UDID is like the unique identifier of Intel's Pentium III processor, which generated privacy concerns around the turn of the century, and we wonder if ths story might play out the same way -- following government inquiries, Intel offered a software utility that let individuals manually disable their chip's unique ID, and removed it from future CPUs.

A purported leak from the parent company of an electronics chain in Great Britain is giving the first hint of what the new Samsung Galaxy Tab might cost. The entry level model of the so-called 'iPad killer' will retail for £599.99 - the equivalent of $950 US - without a contract, according to Paul Lamkin at Pocket-Lint, who cites anonymous sources at the DSG Group. This compares to £529 for an unlocked iPad with similar specs (though the iPad has a screen almost three inches larger than the 7-inch Galaxy Tab).
DSG Group is the owner of UK retailers Currys, Dixons and PC World, which have said they'd be selling the Galaxy Tab through both unlocked and carrier-subsidized arrangements. The cost of the Galaxy Tab with a contract is unknown as yet, but it's instructive to compare the £599.99 ($948 US) recommended retail price for an unlocked 7-inch, 16GB Galaxy Tab to the 9.7-inch..

Netflix already added video out support to its iPad app a few months ago, and it's now finally brought the same functionality to iPhone and iPod touch users as well. Unfortunately, it's not quite bringing all iPhone and iPod touch users up to speed, as the app will only support video out on the iPhone 4 and fourth generation iPod touch. If that doesn't pose a problem for you, however, you can grab the updated app for free right now from your favorite source of iPhone apps.

BlackBerry OS? Dead! iOS? Dead! Symbian? Never stood a chance. Android's exponential growth has today been illustrated by Nielsen's statisticians who present us with the above chart of recent US smartphone purchases. It shows that over the six months leading up to August 2010, 32 percent of American new phone buyers had grabbed themselves a device with Google's OS on board, which is comfortably ahead of RIM at 26 percent and Apple at 25 percent. These results corroborate NPD's figures on the matter -- which peg Android at 33 percent of new US purchases -- and reiterate the idea that Android is headed to a place whose name starts with D and ends with omination. One more chart showing total market share can be found after the break (hint: BlackBerry still reigns supreme overall).

When the iPad finally dropped in April it was greeted with the expected fanfare, but opinions were rather divided about whether the thing would be a long-term success -- even amongst we humble writers. Six months on there can be no doubt, with the tablet selling 4.5 million units in its first quarter of availability according to CNBC. The truly magical iPhone? That managed a (relatively) paltry one million units in the same timeframe after launch, while the now ubiquitous DVD player pushed just 350,000 in its three four months of availability. You know what that means: it's time for analysts to start breaking out the hyperboles -- again. Colin McGranahan from Bernstein Research says "the iPad is a runaway success of unprecedented proportion," meanwhile Pete Najarian from TradeMonster.com calls it a "total media device" and concludes "there's not much a PC can do that you can't do on an iPad." That last bit is certainly debatable, and you know exactly where you can debate it. Just keep it respectful, yeah?

Apple recently approved an iPhone app called IS Drive, which lets users check and manage downloads from ImageShack.us, while also offering users the option to use the company's BitTorrent service to download files to their ImageShack account. Once Apple got wind of what the app was capable of, however, it was promptly removed from iTunes."

A user named Hexxeh has posted a video online of the iPad running Google's upcoming Chrome OS. Hexxeh was able to put Chrome OS on an iPad because the open source code for the operating system is available in its Chromium state, but it's not necessarily true that Apple will allow iPads to run other operating systems going forward. That's typically not a level of openness found in the Apple playbook. Nevertheless, it's worth considering what it might mean to have a robust OS like Apple's on the same tablet as one that runs a cutting-edge operating system like Chrome OS. Why wouldn't users love that?"

Say it with us now: "Here we go again." Just months after a particular eFuse predicament left legions of Droid X owners fuming, it seems that an all-too-familiar scenario is presenting itself to the earliest of T-Mobile G2 buyers. As the story goes, there's a problematic microchip embedded into the handset which "prevents device owners from making permanent changes that allow custom modifications to the the Android operating system." That's according to a lengthy New America report on the issue, which outright proclaims that a hardware rootkit "restricts modifications to a device owned by the user." In other words, if you install some fishy (or not fishy, for that matter) third party ROM, the phone is capable of overriding your software changes and reinstalling the original firmware -- makes perfect sense considering how earlier roots were "vanishing" post-reboot. Needless to say, this isn't exactly going over well with the tinkering community, and a 40+ page thread has already exploded over at xda developers. The silver lining isn't tough to spot, though -- chances are someone with ample time and sufficient coding skills will be able to circumvent this nonsense by the time the G2 actually finds its way back into stock.

Eschewing the femtocells that most of its competitors have embraced, T-Mobile USA has long touted WiFi calling as the answer for augmenting its cellular network -- problem is, they've generally done a poor job of rolling it out to a wide variety of handsets. Notably absent from the compatibility list so far, Android is finally being welcomed to the club today -- as rumored -- with the recently-announced myTouch and Motorola Defy among the first models to nab the feature. Though availability on currently-sold phones hasn't been announced, T-Mobile does say that WiFi calling is "anticipated to be available on a growing selection of T-Mobile's Android-powered smartphones in the coming months," so we'll go on record hoping we see a few upgrades in the works (G2, we're looking straight at you).

Note the plural use of "phone" in that headline quote. It comes from HP's Senior VP Eric Cador who said, "you will see us coming early next year with new phones," when speaking at an industry conference today in Barcelona. Of course, he's referring to smartphones running webOS and not some WinMo followup to the iPAQ Glisten for crissake. Sure, it's not much, but when you're as desperate as we are for the next Palm device then every scrap of information counts.

Apple weathered that Antennagate storm surprisingly well, but now there's another potential cloudburst on the horizon, and it's been pre-named for your convenience: "Glassgate." Or maybe "GlassThatShattersIfScratchedByACasegate." Ryan Block has just posted a story on gdgt citing sources "inside and outside Apple" claiming that Apple has discovered a different flaw -- or weakness, shall we say -- in its iPhone 4 design. The basic problem seems to be with non-bumper cases, specifically ones that slide on to the phone, and the danger of trapped particles scratching the back of the phone while taking the case on and off. Case-caused scratches are nothing new (though still annoying), but the big problem seems to be that these scratches can lead to cracking and even full-on shattering of the back panel. Apparently this lead to Apple severely limiting its reselling efforts of third party cases for a time (which you might have noticed), and while Apple currently has some third party cases online and in its stores, none of the hard cases are of the slide-on variety. Apple also purportedly has a new test program set up to understand this specific issue.
Of course, plenty of questions are raised by all this: is this a widespread problem with folks that have managed to acquire a slide-on case? We haven't really heard of such a correlation so far. Do the snap-on folks, many of whom received their cases free of charge from Apple, have anything to worry about? And does Apple have any intention of warning its consumers about this potential danger? Apple didn't respond to Ryan's request for comment, and we doubt they'll respond to our own until they're good and ready to talk -- let's just hope there's not another faux hat-in-hand press conference in our future!

Well, that didn't take long. Just days after the official Skype application finally landed in the Android Market, along comes an .apk that's far more salacious for Americans. Thanks to xeudoxus over at Droid Forums, a tweaked version of the app is now available to download and sideload (sorry, stock Aria owners), promising the same functionality but without that nasty 3G block. It's really as simple as that -- hit those source links to get the unquestionably superior version, and feel free to let us know how your carrier's network holds up in a test call.

Okay, we know what you're saying: why would a Europe-bound device be getting FCC certification? Well, really, it's a simple matter of making sure that devices capable of roaming stateside are compliant with all the necessary rules and regulations... and it's on that note that we direct your attention to this P102UEU model that's just been approved. In Palm parlance, "P102" refers to the model -- most likely the rumored Pre 2 in this case -- and "UEU" means that it's a UMTS 3G device destined for the EU. As you might recall, the similarly-styled P102UNA and P102EWW (North American UMTS and CDMA, respectively) were just spotted in TÜV Rheinland's database not long ago, so yeah, all signs are pointing to an announce pretty shortly.
Update: PreCentral's forum members have swarmed upon the filing and rooted out some juicy details -- it's almost certainly a slider since the unit was tested in both open and closed positions, it's got an 1150mAh battery (the same capacity as the current Pre / Pre Plus), and thanks to some part number matching, it seems it has exactly the same rear cover (Touchstone-compatible, naturally) as the current models, so odds are good we're not going to see much form factor innovation here. Most notably, though, the processor is listed at 1GHz, though it's not clear which specific core is in use; TI's OMAP3600 series (the same that's found in the Droid 2 and Droid X) seems probable, though.

Consumer electronics trailblazer Apple is set to become an even more powerful player in the technology industry, according to PCR's survey of key retailers across the UK.
When asked if Apple will become a much more dominant force, 68 per cent of respondents said yes, while 22 per cent said no, and 10 per cent were not sure.
Having grown to almost monopolise the MP3 player market, successfully opening up the tablet sector to the mass consumer market, and currently driving widespread HTML5 adoption, Apple certainly has a track record in market dominance in certain sectors.
However while recent products such as the iPad have clearly been a success, there is discord as to whether it, and the tablet market it is paving the way for, will in some way cannibalise the PC market.
What do you think? Will Apple grow to be even more prevalent in the technology space? Is this a good thing? Post your comments below.
This research is based in a targeted survey of 250 key chains, independents, and supermarkets across the UK.

Apple is reportedly working behind the scenes to address scratching and cracking of the iPhone's glass back panel by certain third-party cases. This 'Glassgate' story got rolling with a report in the gdgt newsletter by Ryan Block, who says he spoke with sources inside and outside of Apple about this issue, but was unable to get an official Apple comment. Block writes: 'Apple has apparently found that non-bumper style cases — specifically those that slide onto the iPhone 4, which are occasionally prone to particulate matter getting caught between the rear of the phone and the case — can cause unexpected scratching that could quickly develop into full-on cracking or even much larger fracturing of the entire rear pane of glass. To put it another way: Apple is afraid you might buy a standard slide-on iPhone case, put it on your phone, and then discover the next time you take it off that the entire back of your device has been shattered by no fault of your own.' Apple is said to be taking it seriously, looking to avoid the sort of backlash it got when reports surfaced over the summer that the iPhone 4's antennas didn't work correctly when users gripped the phones in a certain (and quite natural) way.

Mozilla has released the first beta of its Firefox 4 for Android and Maemo. The browser is based on the Firefox 4 core and should be released in the same time frame as the big brother. The mobile browser includes Firefox Sync, a cloud feature that enables users to sync browsing history, passwords, form-fill data and bookmarks, as well as open tabs."
Android news site Androinica also mentions the release, and provides a small tutorial on installing beta apps for Android.

Shootin' straight, are we Andy? For those unaware, Andy Rubin is the vice president of engineering at Google, and he's had his fingers in Android before the mobile OS was taken mainstream by El Goog. He recently sat down to talk mobile with PCMag, and he left the world with a wealth of quotes to ponder. For starters, he practically calls out OEMs who aren't keeping up with Android's releases, noting that "there's no advantage to the OEM of using an older version, and I'd say there's a consumer disadvantage." Clearly, he's not a fan of all of this fragmentation, either. Moving onto Windows Phone 7, he really came out swinging. When asked what he thought about WP7 as a competitor, here's what came flowing out:
"I think the screen shots I've seen are interesting, but look, the world doesn't need another platform. Android is free and open; I think the only reason you create another platform is for political reasons."
We'll obviously need to wait for Windows Phone 7 to launch (and see a few quarters of sales numbers) to see if he's just blowing hot air, but it's interesting fodder at least. Hit the source link for much, much more where this came from -- and keep it sensible in comments, okay? It's just code, after all.

We've been looking forward to this for a while, and now it's here: Adobe AIR runtime for Android. That means developers using Flash Builder or Flash Professional CS5 can publish AIR apps directly to the Android Market, and all users will need is this little runtime from the Market and they're set. AIR's desktop-oriented .air packages aren't compatible, so you can't just go and grab anything, but there are AIR apps already starting to pop up -- AppBrain has a whole list of them in one of the source links below -- since Adobe has been trialling this with developers for a little while now.

Rumors of an iTunes subscription service are nothing new, but it's not every day they pop up in Reuters and the New York Post and CNET all at once, so here we go again. The Reuters and NYP reports claim Apple's Eddy Cue has been meeting with record execs to pitch a new $10-$15 monthly service that would offer unlimited access to music -- the pricing would be tiered depending on the amount of music consumed and how long you'd get access to it. That goes hand in hand with the CNET piece, which says Apple's trying to keep Spotify from getting US deals in place by telling the labels they'll never make any money from the service -- not the most chivalrous of moves, but no one ever said the music business was a friendly place. Of course, we've been hearing versions of these rumors for ages now and we're sure there are always talks ongoing, so this could all be nothing, but we'd bet Apple's trying to work something out ahead of Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 launch and renewed Zune marketing push. We'll see, we'll see.

You'll be seeing a lot more of the good ol' Yahoo smiley on front-facing cameraphones soon -- the web portal's VP of Mobile David Katz says that a new Yahoo! Messenger with cross-platform video chat is headed to Android and iPhone. Originally confirmed for the new T-Mobile myTouch, it's presently been submitted to the iTunes App Store for review. It'll reportedly work over both 3G and WiFi connections and freely conduct video calls with any other device running Yahoo! Messenger, including webcam-equipped PCs. Look out Qik, Fring and Tango -- there's a new sheriff in town.

In case you've got some fundamental issue with Apple's upcoming AirPlay, or just a fifth-gen iPod nano you're unwilling to part with, here's a handy little adapter for you. Produced by Cywee and likely to be sold for around $99 by PCD in the US, this RF streamer plugs straight into your iDevice's dock connector and then beams video, pictures, games and the like over to its nearby base station, which in turn hooks up to your television by a set of RGB cables. Any app that utilizes Apple's video output API is a candidate for having its visuals sent over, though resolution is unfortunately capped at 480p and you'll need line of sight at a distance of no more than 15 feet for everything to work correctly. Just to make sure we're all appropriately underwhelmed by its current product, Cywee promises an 802.11n WiFi variant that'll handle 1080p and output via HDMI for next year. Great, we'll just wait for that one, why don't we?

By now you may have seen some photos of an alleged iPad casing doing the rounds that is purported to be the next generation of Apple's tablet. In the pics, you can clearly see that there are two distinct slots for the company's 30 pin dock connector, which would allow you to plant the iPad in either landscape or portrait mode. Unfortunately, this isn't a sign of things to come -- it's a future that never was. According to a trusted Engadget source, what the image actually shows is a rejected concept from the current generation iPad. The story goes that originally there had been plans to feature two dock connections, but close to the last minute a design decision was made to kill the landscape port.
It's still possible that Apple has decided to go back to the two-port design, but in all likelihood this is a piece of a prototype which has found its way into the world. If the story we've been told is correct, then there would likely be dozens if not hundreds of these back pieces floating around China. From what we can suss out, this is not the direction Apple is going in for the next version, but hey, if come January we see a new iPad with two dock connectors -- drinks are on us.

The perennial rumor of a 7-inch "mini-iPad" resurfaced again this week, with a report of a souped-up iPad 2G in a smaller form factor from an industry analyst. According to one long-time Apple watcher, though, there'd be nothing new about such a device. Jim Dalrymple at The Loop says Apple's always had a 7-inch variant of the iPad that has been in development along with the 9.7-inch model we're all familiar with since the beginning.

UK startup Touchnote has hailed Microsoft's approach to Windows Phone 7 developers as "really refreshing", as it works on its app for the new OS.
Touchnote allows mobile users to turn their cameraphone snaps into physical postcards, and is already available for iPhone, Android and Nokia handsets.
CEO Raam Thakrar says he's been impressed by Microsoft's attitude so far in getting apps up and running for Windows Phone 7.
"It was really refreshing that the WP7 team spent a lot of time with us – helping us with our build, providing feedback and stamping out bugs," he says.
"That’s not something that their competitors often do in our experience. From early on, Microsoft openly gave us feedback that we were a really well designed app, as well as some constructive criticism. Given the somewhat confusing and frustrating experience of working with app stores elsewhere, this has been a breath of fresh air."

Thakrar also praises the "really intuitive and highly visual" Windows Phone 7 UI, which he says "couldn't be more different from Android or iPhone".

Actor Stephen Fry made a surprise appearance at Microsoft’s Window’s Phone 7 press conference in London this afternoon, promoting what he described as the underdog of the mobile operating system market.
The event, held at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, started with a live video link to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer in New York, introducing the software giant’s latest smartphone OS.
Ballmer said the firm had “set out to build a phone that was thoroughly modern†in hardware, design and “the way that it embraces what people do today with internet servicesâ€.
The two main principles behind Windows Phone 7, he said, were ‘Always delightful’ and ‘Wonderfully mine’. The user experience is designed to be ‘delightful’ regardless of the handset or application, while remaining personal to the user, Ballmer claimed.
New features on the phone include easier syncing between the phone and the user’s home media collection, ‘Live tiles’ (icons that show the actual content of each application) and ‘Hubs’, which allow greater integration of apps, features and content across the device.
Stephen Fry, who kept insisting he was “not being paid to be hereâ€, said that despite often being associated with Apple, he would now happily also carry a Windows mobile device alongside his iPhone and BlackBerry.
“Oh, what joy there is in heaven when a sinner repents,†he said of the new ‘Always delightful’ motto. “They now, I think, get it. That all human beings… are human beings first.
“You don’t judge the machines you use… simply by listing their functions.â€
Microsoft also announced six Windows Phone 7 smartphones, which will be hitting the UK market later this month. The HTC 7 Mozart, Samsung Omnia 7, HTC 7 Trophy, LG Optimus 7, HTC HD7 and Dell Venue Pro will be available from October 21st on various networks, but Orange is the main partner for the new OS.

So, maybe Microsoft meant "people don't do that in 2010." At the mega-corp's UK-based Windows Phone 7 launch event, we were just informed that its hot-off-the-presses mobile OS will be blessed with a software update that'll add copy and paste functionality in "early 2011." That's according to one Andy Less, and while details beyond that are scant, it's possible that said update will also bring other magical makeovers into the fold. We're still a little baffled that the company would leave such a seemingly vital part of the software out at launch, but we guess certain corners always have to be cut in order to get something out before a sure-to-be-profitable holiday quarter. And hey, it's not like we haven't seen another major mobile OS player pull this same stunt before.
Update: CNET's Ina Fried got a quick look at an early implementation of copy and paste in Windows Phone 7, and says it works fairly well: You start by clicking on a single word, then drag your finger across the rest of the passage you'd like to transmit to expand your highlighted selection. When you let go, a paste button appears. Sound about right to you?

It may have "Windows" in the branding, but Windows Phone 7 is not the desktop PC experience shoehorned into a cellphone. Microsoft tried that with Windows Mobile... and we all know how that turned out. Today, eight months after the Windows Phone 7 OS unveiling in Barcelona, we're finally seeing the official launch of the retail hardware: nine new WP7 handsets available October 21 in select European and Asian markets and early November in the US. The phones will find their way to over 60 cellphone operators in more than 30 countries this year. Microsoft tapped Dell, HTC, LG, and Samsung to deliver the Snapdragon-based handsets with a carrier list that includes AT&T, T-Mobile USA, Vodafone, TELUS, América Móvil, Deutsche Telekom AG, Movistar, O2, Orange, SFR, SingTel, and Telstra. And that's just for the first wave -- Microsoft has even more handsets coming in 2011 including the first for Sprint and Verizon in the US. Here's the lineup of 480 x 800 pixel (WVGA) phones announced today:
HTC 7 Surround -- The 3.8-inch T8788 with slideout speaker for AT&T and Telus
HTC HD7 -- Schubert comes of age as a 4.3-inch HD2 cousin for T-Mobile and beyond
HTC 7 Trophy -- the 3.8-inch Spark headed to international carriers
HTC 7 Mozart -- another heavily leaked int'l player with 3.7-inch display
Dell Venue Pro -- 4.1-inch portrait QWERTY slider for T-Mobile we broke as Lightning
Samsung Focus -- AT&T's 4-inch Super AMOLED slate we broke as Cetus
Samsung Omnia 7 -- the i8700 is a 4-inch Super AMOLED jobbie for Europe
LG Optimus 7/7Q -- the E900 is the official 3.8-inch global workhorse
LG Quantum -- AT&T's 3.5-inch landscape slider first seen as the C900
HTC 7 Pro -- a 3.6-inch QWERTY slider for Sprint (2011)
"Glance and Go," is the slogan Microsoft is using to differentiate itself from an already crowded smartphone market. Something we've already seen alluded to in that leaked AT&T ad. As Ballmer notes, "Microsoft and its partners are delivering a different kind of mobile phone and experience - one that makes everyday tasks faster by getting more done in fewer steps and providing timely information in a 'glance and go' format." He's referring to WP7's customizable Live Tiles, of course. Xbox Live integration is another biggie with EA Games just announcing its first Xbox Live-enabled wares coming to Windows Phone 7 in the fall including "Need for Speed Undercover," "Tetris," "Monopoly," and "The Sims 3." The other big differentiators are the slick Metro UI, integrated support for Zune media and Zune Pass subscriptions, Bing search and maps, Windows Live including the free Find My Phone service, and Microsoft Office Mobile.
Now quit stalling and jump past the break for the full list of handsets per carrier and country.

And then, there were three. Apple's Find my iPhone introduced a rather compelling idea -- one that involves locating your phone by tapping into the GPS lock that it was holding onto in someone else's arms. A few weeks back, Big Red announced a similar service for VZW-branded BlackBerry, webOS and Android phones, and now that Windows Phone 7 is making its red carpet reveal, we're learning that Microsoft's newest mobile OS has similar functionality baked in. The feature is teased in a new Microsoft video that shows off the cloud functions of WP7, which also demonstrates the phone staying in sync with contacts added on the PC, playing Xbox LIVE with friends and shooting an image on the phone just moments before viewing it on a Windows 7 laptop. We're hoping to get a better idea of how the handset recovery system works (and how much it'll cost) a bit later in the day, but for now that aforementioned video is embedded just past the break.
Update: AT&T has affirmed that this feature will be completely free of charge for WP7 handsets purchased from it. We're still waiting to hear if it'll be free across all carriers / countries.

It's unclear if the tiny, little shot posted on French carrier SFR's Club SFR pour Palm blog is in fact the rumored upcoming Pre 2 or just an old Pre shot, but let's put it this way: considering that we can't readily tell the difference, it better be an old one. At any rate, the sparse details in the blog post line up with everything we're expecting so far, namely that the new model will use a 1GHz processor -- presumably a TI OMAP3630 -- and will sport a full half gig of RAM on board. Between those two spec bumps, we'd fully expect the refreshed webOS 2.0 to scream... but we won't really know for sure until Palm gives us something to work with. In the meantime, SFR, thanks for the teaser.

If you’ve been waiting in the wings for the next Jailbreak to be release you should know there’s been a bit of a speed bump. [ChronicDevTeam], which has been working on an exploit for A4-based iOS devices called SHAtter, tweeted last Thursday that the fully tested, untethered, and unpatchable package knows as greenpois0n would be released today. But on Friday [Geohot], who you may remember from the PlayStation 3 Hypervisor exploit, rolled out his own mostly untested and admittedly beta jailbreak called limera1n.
So where does that leave the situation? Because [geohot] used a different exploit, the [ChronicDevTeam] decided not to release greenp0ison. If they did, it would give Apple a chance to block two different exploits. Instead they are working feverishly to incorporate, test, and repackage using the same exploit as limera1n.
If you don’t want to wait, jailbreak now, but you risk problems with an unstable exploit method that is only available for Windows.

A report on TechCrunch pours some cold water on the idea that the still-rumored Verizon iPhone will support LTE, Verizon's faster 4G standard. Steve Cheney, who was one of the first out of the gate with reports from China that Apple was building a Verizon iPhone, says that the device to be released in January will be compatible only with the existing CDMA 3G standard. According to his report, a dual-mode phone will be out by mid-2011, with LTE support on hold until 2012.

Microsoft's newly launched Windows Phone 7 will be unlikely to catch the leading rivals Android and iOS, Taiwanese smartphone makers have said.
Microsoft has gained widespread agreement to launch Windows Phone 7 handsets on mobile telecoms carriers worldwide, including the big four in the UK, which Digitimes claims would result in an increase of global smartphone market share rising from five per cent for the current Windows Mobile to ten per cent in 2011.
Citing sources within Taiwanese smartphone manufacturers (most likely HTC, the largest Taiwanese player), Digitimes said that because Windows had been so late in offering new versions it was unlikely to catch up with iOS and Android.
Taiwanese manufacturer HTC has been a long term Microsoft partner for Windows Mobile smartphones since long before Apple burst onto the scene with the iPhone. The company is the strongest supporter of Microsoft's mobile OS reboot, offering three handsets in the UK - the 7 Mozart, 7 Trophy and HD7.
Digitimes' sources added that many smartphone vendors had shifted R&D resources from Windows Mobile to Android for over 2 years and that it was "quite impossible" to shift to Windows Phone 7 given "growing marketing potential for Android."
Despite the array of models all of the HTC phones, and indeed all of the others such as from Korean manufacturer's LG and Samsung, are based on 1GHz Qualcomm 'Snapdragon' CPUs with all devices offering 800 x 480 resolution screens. Such little variance in specification is likely an artifact of Microsoft tighly laying a minimum specification for the devices.
Digitimes sources said that these high hardware requirements would further limit the OS to high end products and that more mainstream smartphones are where the sales volume lies. One of the reasons for the success of the Android operating system is smartphone manufacturers introducing lower end models at price points normally associated with 'dumb phones'.

iOS social games and social networking apps are competing with the biggest US prime-time TV shows for audiences and advertisers, says analytics firm Flurry.
The company has produced data claiming that social games on iPhone, iPod touch and iPad have a daily audience of more than 19 million people, who spend more than 22 minutes a day using these apps.
Flurry points out that this is a bigger audience than prime-time US shows like NBC's Sunday Night Football and CBS' Undercover Boss. What's more, it's only four million behind the biggest US show of all, American Idol.
"Since this analysis focuses on only two categories of applications, social games and social networking apps, it’s clear that iOS devices are already ahead of prime time television’s hottest shows," blogs Flurry's Peter Farago.
"Also noteworthy is that the enormous audience these applications reach takes place every day, 365 days a year. Compared to a top television series, which airs 22 episodes a season, advertisers can reach a larger consumer audience through applications 15 times more frequently."
That said, the iOS social gaming audience is more fragmented: brands can still place an ad within American Idol and hope to hit as much as 23 million viewers.
Targeting a similarly-sized audience on iOS is more complicated and fragmented at present, with Apple's iAd network still gathering steam.

Windows Phone 7 is a success for Microsoft, in that it shows the company coming out swinging in the smartphone wars.
That's our verdict on the company's new smartphone OS, following yesterday's launch event.
The user interface is definably different from rivals like iPhone, Android and BlackBerry. Meanwhile, Microsoft has stolen a march on its rivals with the deep integration of Facebook.
There are quibbles. Orange boss Tom Alexander's appearance on-stage - during which he plugged his network and forgot the name of one of its exclusive handsets - was not a great showing for his company.
Meanwhile, there was no big reveal of apps - in London at least - showing how developers are making innovative use of the WP7 platform. We expect more to break cover in the coming weeks, however.

Apple has loosened its tight grip on the iPhone and allowed a third party to develop a health device that exchanges data with the iPhone and their hardware. Is this the start of a trend for Apple that will relax constraints on non-audio Bluetooth use, or is this an exception? Does anyone know of any other devices for the iPhone that allows non-audio Bluetooth transmission of data?"
Reader climenole points out an article about another health-sensor system, dubbed a "body area network," that is built to work with Android devices, but not via Bluetooth.

Well, would you look at that -- iOS 4.2 beta 3 for iPhone and iPad just hit Apple's developer site. No word on changes yet, but if you're brave enough to install it let us know how it goes, won't you?
Update: Oh, hey, iTunes 10.1 beta 2 is also out, in case you were in the mood for some cutting-edge Ping action.

Okay, now that we've got a bigger shot of this thing, we can definitely say that it's neither a Pre nor a Pre Plus... so assuming it's not some sophisticated fake, you're feasting your eyes on Palm's next-gen model here. Given how close it is to the model it'll presumably be replacing, we can't help but feel like the Pre 2 should've actually been the phone we call the Pre Plus today -- and it should've launched six (or more) months ago -- but in the event webOS 2.0 doesn't come to older devices, we suppose that alone will be the impetus some current owners need to upgrade. 'Course, the 1GHz processor should be nice, too. Hit up the source link for a few more shots of it slinking around the wild; meanwhile, we await Palm's move on an official announce.

More fuel for the CDMA iPhone fire today. The Wall Street Journal says that Apple is in talks with both Reliance Communications and Tata Teleservices to bring a CDMA version of its iPhone -- the one it again says will be on sale at Verizon early next year -- to India. The discussions have apparently been ongoing for four or five months according to one WSJ source.
This comes out as news of iPhone exclusivity arrangements are ending in both Germany and The Netherlands. In Germany, Deutsche Telekom loses its exclusive now that both O2 and Vodafone will be offering Apple's finest before the holidays. In Holland, T-Mobile just lost its exclusive arrangement as both KPN and Vodafone have announced plans to carry the iPhone -- no specific dates were mentioned though, like Germany, in time for the holidays is a pretty good guess.

The gnuboy is a gameboy / gameboy color emulator, and now it’s ported for S60 5th edition. This was mainly made for the people who asked for gb / gbc support for gpsp. It was much easier to make by compiling a new emulator for S60 ;-)
There’s no support for SE / Samsung. However it could be added by implementing the DSA changes described in my blog post.
I have to admit that this is still quite unfinished. I pretty much ran out of time. The N8 is coming and I want to start optimizing all my emulators for Symbian^3. Finally getting to use the new graphics architecture, real MultiTouch etc. I’m sure you all know what I mean ;-)
gnuboy menu
know issues:
•No audio
•SE and Samsung phones are not supported, sorry
•the auto frameskip option sucks, try to adjust it by yourself
•it’s quite unfinished, waiting for my N8 ;-)

Much digital ink has been shed about the report from a third-party insurer indicating more broken iPhone 4s than 3GSes in the first four months. The accident rate for iPhone 4 is 68% higher that the iPhone 3GS, according to an analysis done by SquareTrade, with as many as 82% of them having glass damage. While the numbers seem large, it's important to remember that the actual number of iPhone 4s with scratched, cracked or broken glass was 771: just 3.9% (which includes scratches from dirt inside slide cases). Despite the usual suspects hyping this as "Glassgate," the reality - as is often the case - seems to be a bit less dramatic than that.

Google's Android OS is 'irrelevant' to women, claims Lady Geek founder Belinda Parmar, citing research carried out by YouGov for her company.
The survey found that less than 5% of 25-39 year-old women would choose an Android smartphone, compared to 11.4% of men in that age group.
"Android provides a perfect example of how not to market a platform to women, and so the Android experience has become irrelevant to more than half of the population," she says.
She'll be presenting the full findings at this month's DroidCon conference in London.
"I know that this may come as a shock to the attendees at Droidcon and I’m prepared for the rotten tomatoes to be thrown, but it is true that Android has a ‘dude’ problem."
Several executives from Google will be speaking at the conference, so Parmar's session promises to be a hot ticket.

EA will release Windows Phone 7 versions of Need for Speed: Undercover, Tetris, The Sims 3 and Monopoly when Microsoft's smart phone launches later this month.
All the games published by the EA Mobile division will be Xbox Live enabled. You'll be able to track and share scores with leaderboards, unlock Xbox Live Achievements, add to your Gamerscore and communicate with those on your friends list across the Xbox 360, PC and Windows Phone 7.
NFS Undercover will have 20 cars, 24 undercover missions and eight modes. Customisation and upgrades are also featured.
Tetris has Marathon mode, among others. The Sims 3 lets you choose from dozens of personality traits and built-in theme sets. You can complete goals, wishes and personal goals. Monopoly is Monopoly.
New games will be released each week, with demos, "asynchronous turn-based gameplay" and other gubbins.
Earlier this month Microsoft proclaimed Xbox Live integration as the best thing about Windows Phone 7.
60 games will be available at launch. Some, such as Zynga's Farmville, are aimed at the casual gaming audience. But others are clearly targeted at the Xbox's traditional fanbase, and have fancy 2D and 3D visuals.
Windows Phone 7 will go up against iPhone, Android and other devices that have in recent years invested heavily in gaming.
Microsoft is working on real-time phone-to-console gaming, likely initially through Wi-Fi, but the feature won't be ready for launch.
Windows Phone 7 will be released in the UK on 21st October.

Forget all that Mini stuff, Opera is bringing its full-flavored mobile browser to Android some time very soon indeed. To tempt people on board, the new software will support hardware acceleration for buttering up frame rates while you zoom around at potato-scalding speeds, while pinch-to-zoom will also be implemented in a big O Android browser for the first time. Opera Mini will be partaking in the latter upgrade as well, while Opera Mobile proper is expected to make its debut on the Android Market at some point over the next month. All versions of the "well diversified" OS are supported too!

Beautiful Game Studios' first specialised iPhone and iPod Touch Championship Manager game has been released.
For an attractive £4/€5.49, yours can be a rebuilt football management sim designed only for Apple's touch-screen gizmos. The older iPhone ChampMan games were ports.
And it's not just the mechanics that have been tailor made: the gameplay is now based around "snack-sized chunks". BGS boss Roy Meredith reckoned most of you will find several pockets of spare time to play each day.
What's more, with the Championship Manager PC series on indefinite hold, CM11 on iPhone is shouldering the entire weight of the brand. There's no way Square Enix would let it be rubbish.
So, could this be what we haven't seen in years: the first Championship Manager to triumph over Football Manager?

It seems like we're getting closer and closer to the arrival of the Palm Pre 2 and webOS 2.0, and it looks like Verizon will be in the mix -- we were just sent this image of Big Red's internal VZLearn portal showing Pre 2 device training. We still don't know when it'll actually hit or what pricing will be like, and we don't know if it'll hit Sprint and AT&T as well like the OG Pre, but we're guessing we'll find out soon enough -- keep a sharp eye, we'll let you know.

We've already established that if you're filthy rich, you probably don't want the same cell phone as common folk. No, if you're looking for something higher end, you'll probably end up talking to Stuart Hughes, who customizes electronics by plating them in gold and diamonds. We've already seen his work on a $20,000 iPhone 4, but his latest achievement is downright ridiculous. Called the "world's most expensive phone" (we'll see how long that lasts), Hughes made two identical models for an Australian client. Each handset includes over 500 diamonds and totals over 100 karats, and comes in its own special granite box. Its total cost is £5 million -- nearly 8 million dollars. Just don't bother crying when you leave it on the seat of a cab.

EA is bringing some of its biggest properties to iOS, the company revealed during a recent presentation at the Apple Store in Ginza, Tokyo. Aside from the numerous titles already revealed last week, EA is currently working on ports of Dead Space 2, Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit, and even an ad-supported, subscription-optional version of Pogo, the company's casual online games portal. There will also be an EA Active presence on Apple's devices, as well as a version of Monopoly.
Also, the other properties EA has lined up include an adaptation of the board game Pictureka! and a new racer called Reckless -- formerly known as Deliverace. If you're wondering, "Why the name change?" then clearly you've never spent time on the Cahulawassee River. Nobody wants to be reminded of that "vacation."

Here’s a 2-channel Oscilloscope for your Android phone. It uses a base module driven by a dsPIC for signal processing. From there, an LMX9838 Bluetooth module broadcasts the data to the phone so that the waveform can be displayed. [Yus] ported some Python code he had been using over to a set of Java and XML files in order to get it working on Android. This was actually the first time he worked with the SDK… we’d say he’s a quick learner. See it in action after the break.

Geohot has just recently updated the limera1n.com website to include a download link for Mac users. That's right, now everybody can join in on the fun.
Check out the guide on how to jailbreak 4.1 with limera1n
Limera1n is now compatible with both Mac and PC, and the expolit has already been ported by @wizdaz, to work with PwnageTool, for those users waiting on an custom firmware package in order to maintain their current baseband. I repeat: ultrasn0w unlockers should wait for PwnageTool
So now we have a jailbreak tool for both Platforms, and a PwnageTool release right around the corner for creating custom, non baseband updating, firmwares. It's a great month in the land of Jailbreaking!

Not sure how this slipped by us, but it only seems appropriate after covering the Mac release of limera1n; Greenpois0n was updated 2 days ago to include a version available for Linux. While the Mac version is yet to be available, you can use Limera1n in the meantime, which has recently been released for Mac OS X.
The chronic dev team has said that the Mac version is almost near completion, as they work out a few small issues. Once that comes out, Greepois0n will be compatible on a total of 3 operating systems. It is unknown if GeoHot has plans for a Linux Limera1n.

Around 80 per cent of revenue from iPhone Apps stems from in-game goods, according to a report by analytics outfit Flurry>.
For the month of September, Flurry found that the average monthly revenue per user in its surveyed Apps was $9 from virtual goods sales, and just over $1 from advertising.
While advertising revenues were roughly the same in September 2009, the estimated average monthly revenue per user from virtual goods has grown from around $1.70 in the space of a year.
Flurry's figures were based on data from a range of 'leading' iOS applications, which it claims sport a combined reach of 2.2 million daily active users.

The full Android version of Angry Birds has been downloaded more than one million times from GetJar in the last 24 hours.
Developer Rovio Mobile tweeted the milestone this afternoon:
"Over 1 million Angry Birds downloads on GetJar in a day, no wonder the servers were down."
The figure was also confirmed by GetJar CMO Patrick Mork on Twitter, with the additional information that this is a new record for the independent app store.
GetJar's servers struggled to cope when the game went live yesterday, and more than 90,000 people downloaded it in a matter of seconds.
Rovio has also been using Twitter to respond to complaints from Android users about the performance of the game on their handsets.
"The experience on the Hero is not great, best we can do with that graphics hardware," says one tweet in response to a query.
Meanwhile, the developer also confirmed that the challenges of selling games on Android was one of the key reasons for going with GetJar and an ad-supported model.
"Yes, right now it's not easy to make money with paid content on Android. Hoping that ads will cover costs if nothing else," tweeted Rovio in response to another query.

A new Dead Space game for the iPad will launch in December, EA has revealed.
The publisher announced the game at a press event in Tokyo's Apple Store, according to TouchArcade.
The game will bridge the story gap between the first two Dead Space titles and feature motion-based dismemberment, letting you lop of necromorph limbs with the swipe of a finger.
A slideshow presentation at the event promised, "Third person shooter - no rails, no mode switching."
The slide made no mention of an iPhone version.
Hopefully the game will fare better than EA's other recent spin-off, Dead Space Ignition. Eurogamer's Chris Schilling deemed the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade download only worthy of 3/10.
EA also showed off a number of other games in the works for Apple's device at the event, including Reckless Racing, Monopoly, NBA Elite 11, EA Sports Active and Pictureka!
EA's mobile division has been very busy of late. It recently unveiled its first slate of titles for Microsoft's new Windows Phone 7 OS, including versions of Need For Speed: Underground, Tetris and The Sims 3.
Dead Space 2 launches on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on 25th January 2010.,

Jailbreak utility TinyUmbrella got a big update today. Version 4.1.9 is now available for Mac OS X, Linux and Windows. TinyUmbrella is a staple tool in the Jailbreak community. With the ability to save SHSH blobs, TinyUmbrella allows jailbreakers the ability to downgrade to a previous iOS version if necessary. This can be useful when users want to jailbreak their iOS devices, but have upgraded their software to an unsupported version. Users must save their SHSH blobs before upgrading to the latest iOS version, if they want to be able to downgrade later.
Currently, users looking to unlock their iPhones cannot use TinyUmbrella to do this. According to the TinyUmbrella blog:
“DO NOT USE TINYUMBRELLA in an attempt to save your baseband. It will not work. The baseband protection is for iPhone 4 *ONLY*.â€
TinyUmbrella now has a totally redesigned interface for all operating systems...

MuscleNerd, a developer from the Dev-Team, has hinted at the possibility of PwnageTool being able to provide untethered jailbroken firmware creation for ALL future firmware updates on devices that use the A4 chip (iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4G and iPad).
"Think we've figured out a way to extend PwnageTool+limera1n+ @comex hacks to untethered JBs for all future A4 firmwares " says MuscleNerd via twitter. The announcement gives a bit more confidence to jailbreakers who are afraid of being left out when future updates come, like iOS 4.2 for example. This one being a major update for the iPad users, and losing their jailbreaks could be disappointing if there was no way to jailbreak.

The iPad is not yet available in Taiwan, and nobody at Apple has given any indication of when it will be, despite having received official approval from the government agency that regulates communications on the island. According to an employee at one Apple retailer, the iPad is being held back until iOS can support the traditional Chinese characters used in Taiwan.
Chin-hsien Lo, deputy director of the technologies administration department at the Taiwan National Communications Commission, announced that both the WiFi only and WiFi+3G iPads received all the necessary certifications. "The NCC has completed the required inspections and the products can now be sold in Taiwan," Lo told The China Post. The Post contacted people at Apple's Taipei office but they said that they had no idea of the schedule,

VLC Media Player is headed to the iPhone and is currently waiting for App Store approval. Applidium released the iPad version about a month ago and is now readying a universal update to the popular video player. Only the most current generations of iPhone and iPod Touch have the enough horsepower to decode movies with a fast enough frame rate to be enjoyable, for now. New features Applidium have included with this update are:
Playback should be smoother than the previous version. Indeed, we’ve enabled low-level assembly optimizations to use the ARMv7 core of the Apple A4 processor as efficiently as possible.
It’s still not possible to use the hardware video decoder, so unfortunately in most cases 720p video still won’t play smoothly.

Apple launched its Game Center connected gaming community for iPhone and iPod touch in early September, as part of its iOS 4.1 software. So how's it doing?
The company has not provided any official figures, but there is a certain amount of transparency built in to Game Center, since on your device, its app shows the number of connected players for each game.
Sister site ME did some number-crunching, pulling out the stats for 20 of the games on our iPhone, and comparing them where possible to publicly-announced sales figures for those games.
The idea: to see if any conclusions can be drawn about Game Center's popularity - if x people have bought a game, and y of them are counted in its Game Center leaderboards, then perhaps the percentage of iOS users who've signed up for Apple's community is z.
In a word, no. The data is interesting, but defies any attempts to make such general conclusions.

Apple's mobile application and game marketplace has now passed 300,000 entries, reaching that milestone in just over two years.
The App Store currently attracts around 1000 new Apps per day, reports Mobclix (via VentureBeat), with the ratio of paid to free entries approximately 69 versus 31 per cent.
Games constitute the second-most popular download category at 16.6 per cent (just behind books at 16.8 per cent).
The 300,000 total count is not exact, with tens of thousands of Apps now inactive - but conversely many non-US Apps are not covered.
The rival Android Marketplace is fast on the rise, however – currently reported as exceeding 113,000. This may increase as a wave of Android-based iPad rivals, such as the Advent Vega and Archos 70/101, arrive at retail next month.

Capcom's latest title in the Monster Hunter franchise has topped one million users, despite being a mobile only title.
Monhan Diary Mobile Felyne Village is only the latest in a long line of Monster Hunter titles to see great numbers in Japan, but is the first to do so on a mobile platform.
The game, which is Capcom's first foray into social mobile gaming, has seen over one million users sign up since launching on DeNA's Mobagetown service on August 10, having passed the half-million mark in just 17 days.
"In addition to the lovable characters and the heart-warming world, the accessibility of the game itself as well as its communication-rich social aspects has helped this supplementary social game reach and surpass the one million user mark in unprecedented speed," said Capcom in a statement, translated by Andriasang.
"An effective promotional campaign has also helped to attract not only fans of the Monster Hunter series, but new users as well."
Capcom is currently holding an introduce a friend scheme with in-game items as rewards to incentivise the further spread of the game.

Microsoft's serious about making Kinect a success. A $500 million kind of serious. That's the latest report, courtesy of the New York Post, on the change Steve Ballmer and company intend to drop to make sure that every living and breathing creature in the US knows about the controller-free controller this holiday season. That mirrors earlier analyst estimates placing the Windows Phone 7 marketing budget at a similar figure, which in total would amount to a cool billion dollars in advertising expenditure. We already know Microsoft's scooped the Old Spice Guy for WP7, but Kinect is getting the extra special carpet bombing treatment with Burger King, Pepsi, YouTube, Nickelodeon, Disney, Glee, Dancing with the Stars, People and InStyle magazines, and even Times Square all having a role to play in spreading the word. Yup, it's gonna be pretty hard to miss it.

Archos swore up and down that this one was set to ship in "mid-October," which means that the pre-order link at Amazon should switch over in a matter of nanoseconds, minutes or hours. For those in need of a refresher, the Archos 43 is an Android-based portable media player with a 4.3-inch touchpanel, support for a zillion (give or take) file formats, an HDMI output and integrated WiFi. The 16GB model is available to claim for $249.99, so if you've been waiting for your chance to hop in the purchase line, this is it. Don't blow it.

The iPhone can do many things, but "hypnotize passers-by with a dazzling array of colors" is not typically listed among its strong suits. That's where the iGlo LED Set comes into play, bundling a WiFi-enabled strip of 120 multi-color LEDs -- measuring some five meters in length -- with iPhone and iPad apps that can control them. $299 is a small price to pay for this kind of portable party-making power, considering you just spent that much on a bottle of Blue Label for Steve's birthday party last week... and that didn't turn you into the most popular guy in the room.

With the release of RC4 of Greenpois0n, the jailbreak tool now adds support for the iPod Touch 2G, both MC and MB models both of which are untethered jailbreaks.
pod2g tweeted earlier about his second exploit, which he calls “steaks4uceâ€, which exists for the iPod Touch 2G. Using this method alongside Greenpois0n, and using Comex's tether hack, greenpois0n adds the iPod Touch 2G to it's list.
Both Windows and Mac versions are available via the greenpois0n website.

The discovery of a heretofore unknown key in a FaceTime property list has raised the possibility that future versions of the app will support conference video calls. A forum member over at iPodTouchFans.com spotted a key called...; it is set to 'false' by default, but setting it to 'true' doesn't seem to have any effect. Although this would be a fairly useless feature on iPhones and iPod touches, an iPad with a front-facing camera would certainly be able to benefit from the ability to talk to multiple video callers at once given its larger screen.

Apple has announced its fiscal Q4 results for 2010, including sales of 14.1 million iPhones - up 91% from the same quarter last year.
The company also shifted 4.19 million iPads during the quarter, and 9.05 million iPods, although Apple didn't say how many of those were app-capable iPod touches.
What is clear is the sheer lucrativeness of Apple's iOS business. The company generated record revenues of $20.34 billion during the quarter, up from $12.21 billion in its Q4 last year.
Apple's quarterly net profit was $4.31 billion. up from $2.53 billion a year ago.
"We are blown away to report over $20 billion in revenue and over $4 billion in after-tax earnings—both all-time records for Apple," said CEO Steve Jobs, in a statement.
"iPhone sales of 14.1 million were up 91 percent year-over-year, handily beating the 12.1 million phones RIM sold in their most recent quarter. We still have a few surprises left for the remainder of this calendar year."
However, Jobs had a lot more to say about RIM, not to mention Android, in the subsequent earnings call with analysts.

Mobile game app Angry Birds has totalled over two million downloads on the Android platform in five days, according to developer Rovio.
The game, which sat at the top of the sales chart on Apple's App Store for some time, was released on the GetJar app service for Android last Friday, 15 October. Reportedly, a rush of 90,000 downloads within 'seconds' caused the GetJAr servers to crash under the strain and the app was moved to the Android Market.
Yesterday, the official twitter account for the Finnish developer announced that the game had surpassed 2 million downloads.
The game is available in paid for and free, ad-supported versions, it is currently unknown how the sales figures are split between the two SKUs.

Research firm Gartner yesterday predicted that tablet sales would hit 19.5 million by the end of this year, rising 181 per cent to 54.8 million next year.
This would double again to 103 million units in 2012, it estimated, and come 2014 more than 208 million consumers would pick up tablets.
Said Carolina Milanesi, vice president of research at Gartner, "The all-in-one nature of media tablets will result in the cannibalisation of other consumer electronics devices such as e-readers, gaming devices and media players."
Gartner felt that netbooks would particularly suffer as a result of tablets' growth, which in turn would cause North America's market share of tablet sales to decline.
It estimated that the US and Canada would comprise 61 per cent of worldwide tablet sales by the end of this year, falling to 43 per cent by 2014.
In response to the predictions, Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick was optimistic about tablets as a gaming platform when talking to Bloomberg TV.
He predicted great things to come from the iPad and its rivals, but expressed minimal interest in publishing games for the current generation.
"It's small for a tablet because we support largely consoles, that's the bulk of our business," he said. "Why's that the bulk of our business? Because it allows us to do incredibly robust products.
"However, what's exciting about the tablet revolution, if you believe in Moore's Law, which I do, is that tablets are going to become more and more robust platforms and they'll allow you to do incredible things and they're portable, they're cheap and they're getting cheaper."
While Apple is the leading tablet-maker, selling 4.2 million iPads over its last quarter, a range of cheaper Android-based models are slowly arriving at retail.

Apple's all aglow with its fiscal triumphs, but that's nothing new. Here's something else that follows the Cupertino company like night follows the day: Verizon iPhone rumors. Boy Genius Report claims it's heard from one of its "solid Apple sources" that iPhone 3,2 (seen previously in iOS code) has hit "AP testing phase," which reportedly means final hardware and near-final software. Said source also claims it has a SIM card slot, which would be fine except for BGR's assertion that 3,2 is the oft-rumored CDMA iPhone -- you know, the one that Wall Street Journal is all but certain is coming next year. So how might these two apparently contradictory elements form some tangible paradox machine? One possibility the publication is suggesting is a CDMA / GSM dual-mode "global" phone that'd work on virtually all major carriers. Then again, it could just be a GSM iPhone 4 with some design finagling (antenna revision?). If any of this pans out, that is, but at least you can say you witnessed the Verizon iPhone rumor merging with existing iPhone 4 to form a mythical "carrier Voltron" device. Or something like that.

The developers of the popular mobile social networking tool TweetDeck have hit back after Apple CEO Steve Jobs claimed Android 'fragmentation' represented a 'daunting challenge' to developers.
In a controversial appearance in an earnings call, the Apple boss delivered a surprising set of criticisms against rivals from Google's Android, to 7-inch tablets and Blackberry-maker RIM. Jobs spent the most time discussing Android, calling the open/closed operating system speak from Google 'disingenuous' and a 'smoke screen' against the real issue, Android version fragmentation.
As one of the key arguments, Jobs pointed to the recent release of the TweetDeck client on Android. “They reported that they had to contend with more than a hundred different versions of Android software on 244 different handsets,†he said. “The multiple hardware and software iterations present developers with a daunting challenge. “
TweetDeck CEO Iain Dodsworth fired back in a tweet: “ Errr nope, no we didn't. It wasn't.†Dodsworth pointed out that the Android client was developed by just two people.
In a rather more cryptic response to the criticisms made by Jobs, Google's Android chief Andy Rubin tweeted a 'definition of open' before including the technical command line which would download the Android source code and build the open source OS from scratch for anyone.

And just like that, the rumor mill smirks. HP has just come clean with a device that we've been hearing more and more about over the past few weeks, and with it will come the next generation of webOS that we've been hearing about for even longer. The Palm Pre 2 will be the first device to ship with HP webOS 2.0, with the revamped and renamed (presumably to use on more than just Palm smartphones) mobile OS promising "true multitasking," Stacks (for organizing apps) Just Type, HP Synergy (links your email and social networking accounts), Exhibition (enabling users to run apps designed specifically for the Palm Touchstone Charging Dock) and support for Adobe's Flash Player 10.1 Beta. It's also bringing along a new Favorites tagging option, Skype Mobile (on the Verizon version only), text assist, integrated Quickoffice, VPN support, a redesigned launcher and full support for Bluetooth keyboards and SPP peripherals.
As for Pre 2 itself? Little is being revealed at the moment, but we're told to expect a 1GHz CPU, a five megapixel camera (LED flash, extended depth of field, geotagging, and video capture), glass display and a "sleeker, streamlined design" that still combines a touchpanel with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. In other words, it's a faster, slimmer Pre, and some would argue it's what the Pre Plus should've been. At any rate, SFR customers in France will get first dibs on Friday, with Verizon and an undisclosed carrier in Canada scheduled to get it "in the coming months." Oh, and as for US-based developers? They'll be able to purchase unlocked UMTS versions of the Pre 2 (!) in their homeland, though pricing remains elusive.
Update: The Pre 2 portal is now live, showcasing a 3.1-inch 480 x 320 (HVGA) multitouch display, a black enclosure, Exchange support, built-in GPS, ambient light / proximity sensors, an accelerometer, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, 16GB of inbuilt storage space, a battery good for around 5.5 hours of talking and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

HP has released details of the firm's anticipated relaunch of the Palm brand with the new Palm Pre 2 smartphone powered by a revamped webOS 2.0.
The firm called the webOS 2.0 smartphone operating system the most "significant update to webOS ever", saying that the new version "ratchets up a few notches" the set of features from previous versions. One of the major new features is a multitasking interface called Stacks which, the company said, automatically groups related 'cards' together in stacks in order to make it easier to switch between many applications.
"With webOS 2.0, we're advancing the innovations we introduced 16 months ago, expanding the features that make webOS great for consumers, enterprises and developers," said HP's Palm business unit boss Jon Rubinstein. "We've made tremendous strides since the platform launched, and now we're taking our biggest leap forward with powerful new features that make it easier to get more things done with your webOS device."
Also coming in webOS 2.0 is a feature called Just Type which launches appropriate applications such as composing an email, writing a message or searching the web without needing to move to an appropriate application first. The system will be made available for developers to hook into in order to enhance the Just Typle functionality.
HP Synergy is the name given to a new software aggregation hub in webOS 2.0 which aims to combine a range of accounts such as Microsoft Exchange, Facebook and Google, presenting them through a common front end interface.
The Palm Pre 2 phone now includes a processor clocked at one gigahertz, similar to the current grop of high-end smartphones and rather more than the previous Pre offering. The new Pre 2 will also have a slide-out keyboard, 3.1-inch "vivid touchscreen" and 16GB of onboard memory.
The Palm Pre 2 will appear first on the French network SFR, as early as this Friday, while listed as the "coming months" for the US. The company will also be making available an unlocked version to run on any network although the carrier of choice for subsidized contracts in the US and Canada is Verizon.

If you happen to be enthusiastic about Lenovo, tablets, and your American residency, look away now. Lenovo still plans to ship the Android-based LePad in China some time soonish, but its US roadmap can pretty much be summed up as "wait and see." The company's COO Rory Read has been cited as saying there are no plans to release a slate for the US market until at least Android's Honeycomb version comes out, agreeing with Google on the point that Froyo is not "the right base to have a fully functioning pad." Lest you think Windows 7 will fill the void until whenever in 2011 that Android tablet does arrive, Lenovo's director of new technology, Howard Locker, sets you straight: "Windows 7 is based on the same paradigm as 1985 -- it's really an interface that's optimized for a mouse and keyboard," and the Thinking machine team doesn't intend to build a slate around it. And if you were thinking of maybe picking up a LePhone as a consolation prize, tough luck, that won't be arriving in the US for at least another two years (which in smartphone terms is basically "never"), although it's good to know that it's now got 13 percent of the smartphone market in China. You know, in case you own stock in LeCompany.

The iOS dev community already shattered the new Apple TV, but now it's been poisoned, too. What does this mean for you? It means that there's still a chance your $99 set top box might be jailbroken to run apps, even though Shatter is gone. Now we'll just have to wait and see if someone figures the hard part out, and gets some apps installed. Those Angry Birds don't fling themselves, you know.

So the Pre 2 has been announced for SFR in France and Verizon in the States, along with an unlocked model for developers... but so far, we'd only seen one of the three in the FCC. Well, here are the other two: on the left, the P102EWW, and on the right, the P102UNA. Palm's naming convention is a little strange, so it probably bears explaining again -- the "P102" tells you that it's a Pre 2, while "EWW" indicates CDMA and "UNA" indicates North American GSM / UMTS. From the UNA model's filing, it would seem there isn't any AWS capability on board, so users of T-Mobile are going to have to plod along at 2G speeds if they want to play ball. You know, Murphy's Law and all.

Following mounting speculation earlier today, EA has confirmed its planned purchase of mobile game publisher Chillingo.
Chillingo is best known for iPhone hit Angry Birds (which it did not develop), and is currently topping the App Store charts once again with Cut The Rope.
Sources suggested to Reuters that EA will "pay under $20 million in cash plus other undisclosed considerations."
"By acquiring Chillingo, EA Mobile is increasing its market leadership on the Apple platform as well as reaffirming its position as the world's leading wireless entertainment publisher," said EA spokeswoman Holly Rockwood.
This is EA's second recent purchase in the online space, having acquired Facebook studio PlayFish for $250 million just over a year ago.

You still won't be able to do much beyond the command line just yet, but folks looking to jailbreak their new Apple TV can now do so with relative ease thanks to the Dev-Team's PwnageTool 4.1, which has just been made available for download. Of course, a command line today only means that we're pretty much guaranteed to see some more interesting things tomorrow -- hit up the source link below to get started.

Hoo boy, our tipster was spot on with this one, Apple's adding an 11.6-inch sibling to its newly redesigned 13.3-inch MacBook Air. It'll have a dual-core 1.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU (upgradeable to 1.6GHz), 1366 x 768 resolution, and a $999 starting price for the 64GB SSD model, with the 128GB version setting you back $1,199. It carries over the aluminum unibody construction from the 13-incher, along with the same 2GB or 4GB DDR3 RAM options and NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics, but has to settle for a briefer 5-hour battery life.

A holiday tradition? Making things out of gingerbread, and Google is doing its part to keep that practice alive according to a report stating Android 3.0 is set to hit some tablets this December. Those will just be early samples destined only to light up the eyes of engineers who've been very, very good this year, but the rest of us naughty boys and girls will get to see those slates when they launch to the public in January. We hear there's a little electronics show happening that time of year, and supposedly HTC, Samsung, and Motorola will be showing their Gingerbread tablets there, amongst others (but not Lenovo, apparently). We can't wait to get a taste.
Update: Thanks to James for pointing out that it's still unclear whether 3.0 is going to be Gingerbread or, indeed, the truly tablet-minded Honeycomb release we're really waiting for. This report states specifically that 3.0 is hitting tablets in December, with 4.0 later in 2011. Is that Gingerbread and Honeycomb, or Honeycomb and Ice Cream? Also, is anyone else hungry?

The Mac is set to get its own version of the App Store, Apple has announced.
MCV reports that CEO Steve Jobs revealed a Mac App Store would launch "within 90 days", during an OS X Lion preview event earlier today.
Although no titles have been confirmed as of yet, Apple promises it will offer software made specifically for the platform.
The interface and functionality will be very similar to the regular App Store, allowing users to download and re-download software onto all Macs that they use.
Like on the iPhone, iPod and iPad, apps will autosave and resume when relaunched, install onto the dock automatically and update autonomously.
Apple announced that developers could start submitting products in November and can expect the same 70/30 revenue split as on the iOS.
So, these seem to be salad days for Mac gaming. Valve launched its popular Steam portal for the platform back in May, helping the service to its best ever year.

Rovio launches Halloween spin-off, but burns bridges with Chillingo.
More than three million people have now downloaded the Android version of Angry Birds since its release late last week.
Google announced the milestone on its mobile advertising blog. The company is providing the in-game ads for the Android version, which is free to download.
digg
"Rovio is excited about the partnership with Google's AdMob as we explore new business models that will allow us to maximize reach across mobile platforms," says Rovio's Peter Vesterbacka.
Besides standard ads, Rovio will also be using Google subsidiary AdMob's 'House Ad' service to plug other games and products within Angry Birds. That will include ads for its soon-to-launch plush toys.
Back on iPhone, Rovio has launched a spin-off game for its feathery franchise: Angry Birds Halloween.
The game includes 45 new levels, as well as suitably spooky music and scenery. It's being sold for $0.99 on iPhone and $1.99 on iPad.
However, it seems that Rovio's relationship with the original publisher of Angry Birds, Chillingo, is well and truly over.
It has self-published the Halloween game, and having spent much of last night tweeting to the world that Angry Birds was not part of the EA/Chillingo acquisition, the developer made its position clear in an interview with TechCrunch.
"We only did the first iPad/iPhone integration with Chillingo and aside from that we’ve published everything ourselves," says Vesterbacka.
We will not use Chillingo again... You don’t need publishers."
Well, you might not once you have a monster hit like Angry Birds - although we sense that now it's owned by EA, Chillingo may take a harder line on IP ownership in its contractual negotiations with developers.

Apple has announced that its App Store has now passed the seven billion downloads milestone, up from 6.5 billion at the start of September.
That means the store is currently doing 10 million downloads every day - more than Android Market, BlackBerry App World and Android Market combined.
(There's some debate over which of these stores include updates in their totals and which don't, it should be noted).

The investment arm of chipmaker giant Intel has spent $3 million on OpenFeint, the third-party alternative to Apple’s own Game Center.
The mobile social gaming platform, built by Aurora Feint, has so far reached $12 million in external funding.
Intel’s newest investment may be a signal, perhaps, that Apple’s official alternative to platforms such as OpenFeint may not enjoy the kind of dominance that Apple is used to.
As well as being a popular developer choice on iOS devices, Aurora Feint’s OpenFeint platform is now becoming a success on Google’s Android OS.
Intel told Techcrunch it bought Aurora Feint because of the potential of the social game space, which OpenFeint quantifiably has succeeded in.

Mobile games publisher Gameloft has launched its first comic-book app on the App Store, to promote its new game Star Battalion.
Both game and app went live this week. The app introduces people to the people and pilots of the Star Battalion universe.
(A precis: intergalactic fratricidal warfare. Which is always nice.)
The comic-book app is free to download, and has the high production values that have become Gameloft's hallmark on the App Store.
Meanwhile, the Star Battalion game is also notable, as it's the first Gameloft game to tie into Apple's Game Center community.
Gameloft isn't the only iOS firm using comic strips to promote its games. Independent developer Bolt Creative recently launched a comic and comic-app based on its popular Pocket God game.

Social games giant Zynga has launched its flagship title, FarmVille, for iPad.
It was already available for iPhone, but that version has been updated to be a Universal app, which runs at a higher resolution on iPad.
"The iPad is a spectacular gaming device, and the new FarmVille app leverages its larger touch screen interface and enhanced graphics," says president of studios Steven Chiang.
Zynga has also dished out some stats on the game's performance so far on the App Store. Although not downloads or monthly active users.
Instead, the company says that people are playing FarmVille for iPhone in 85 different countries, and receive more than 500,000 gifts a day.

Here's a blast from the past: Winamp, that mainstay media player of college dorms and LAN parties since time immemorial (er, 1997 or so) has made the leap from PC to handset with the release of Winamp for Android. This bad boy is available for Android 2.1 and up, and features a playback widget for the Android desktop and Last.fm integration. But that ain't all! If you install Winamp 5.59 beta on your PC, you can sync and manage your libraries via USB or WiFI. Pretty sweet! We only have one questions, really: will it still whip the llama's ass? Check out the QR code after the break (or search the Android Market) for the mobile app. Winamp 5.59 beta is available in the Winamp forums (More Coverage link, below).

It's time to get Reckless with your iPhone! No, wait, don't do that, these things are expensive. It's actually time to get Reckless Racing for your iPhone. Yes, that's much safer.
Pixelbite's top-down rally racing game features multiple driving styles, and three game modes: "Dirt Rally," a time trial mode, and "Delivery," a sort of relay in which you pick up items on special tracks and drop them elsewhere. It's meant to evoke "classic" top-down racers, but without that free-spinning wheel we used to love to play with as we walked by the Super Off-Road machine in the arcade. Reckless Racing is on the App Store now for both iPhone and iPad.

Apple calls the new MacBook Air "the next generation of MacBooks," in an indication that they are planning on incorporating the innovative features of the refreshed model in all Apple laptops. Chief among these is the solid-state drive (SSD) flash storage that replaces the hard drive, cutting weight and extending battery life. Apple has telegraphed in a number of ways that the 'instant-on' capability of the MacBook Air and iPad will become standard on MacBooks - if not on all Macs - in the future.
"All notebooks will be like this someday," Jobs said on the stage yesterday, calling the MacBook Air "the future of the MacBook."

It didn't take long for our jailbroken AppleTV's to get rocking with custom Apps. The first app to come to AppleTV is called nitoTV.
nitoTV is a front end application for the popular mplayer media player. Using perian and Apple's DVDPlayback.framework, users can create playlists and add files or folders of their choice.
So what else does NitoTV do? Well it's more than just a media player. Supposedly you can even use NitoTV to play nes, snes, genesis, game gear and gameboy advanced roms, view RSS feeds and 3-day Weather forecasts.
At this point, you should be able to play almost any media file type. However, the installation process might have the unexperienced scratching their head. You will be required to SSH the files over to your AppleTV.
Note: The current installer packages are NOT for AppleTV 2, but the original AppleTV.

Who knew a support thread on corporate WiFi login issues would lead to anything we'd care about? Cut to Google code's Android forums, where an anonymous Google engineer confirms that this problem will be patched in the "next major release" of Android, specifically version 2.3. So... does this mean Android 2.3 is the oft-discussed (and close on the horizon) Gingerbread? Not necessarily -- while possible, there isn't any indication to that effect, and logic doesn't arbitrarily equate the two. After all, recall that Eclair was both 2.0 and 2.1, so there would be some historical precedence to this 0.1 leap being nothing more than sprinkles on frozen yogurt.

Gaming appears to be most popular app genre for Apple's iPad, according to a recent survey by Nielsen.
While findings revealed that 32 per cent of iPad owners rather surprisingly claimed they were yet to download any Apps, 62 per cent of those who had revealed they're tried games.
In total, 38 per cent of the iPad owners surveyed online had downloaded games, making it the top paid App category.
However, only 400 iPad owners were questioned in total, as part of an online survey covering 5000 owners of tablet devices - also including Kindles and smartphones.
Game companies are fast taking advantage of the iPad's seven million worldwide sales to date, with yesterday seeing Zynga release a new version of Facebook titan Farmville for the iPad.
Like the earlier iPhone version, the title is free to play, microtransaction-funded and runs in a client independent of Facebook (though nonetheless requires an account).
"The iPad is a spectacular gaming device, and the new FarmVille app leverages its larger touch screen interface and enhanced graphics," said Zynga's president of studios Steven Chiang. "FarmVille on the iPhone was an instant hit and now we are giving people another Apple device to play on."
Meanwhile, Rovio studios have immediately leapt to the top of both the iPhone and iPad App Store charts with a new Hallowe'en-themed version of the ubiquitous Angry Birds.
Nielsen's iPad user survey also found that the audience was 65 per cent and 63 per cent under 35 years of age. 39 percent of those surveyed earned more than $80,000 per year.

Cult Dreamcast game ChuChu Rocket! will be released for the iPhone, iPod Touch and in HD on the iPad "very soon", SEGA has announced.
The iPhone/iPad version will cost £2.99 / €3.99 from the App Store. The iPad version will set you back £3.99 / €5.49.
The mobile version has over 145 puzzles and 24 multiplayer levels for up to four players via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.
The iPad version has an exclusive multiplayer battle feature that allows four players to play on one iPad.
ChuChu Rocket! – from Sonic creator Yuji Naka – was originally released in 1999 for SEGA's final home console the Dreamcast.
The game's existence on iDevices appears to be the result of you, the fans.
Last year SEGA revealed it was brainstorming ideas for iPhone and iPod Touch games and wanted to know what gamers fancied.
Ideas were to be gathered on Twitter, Facebook and on the SEGA forums and put to a panel. Requests included Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Crazy Taxi, Outrun and... ChuChu Rocket!

On Friday, Apple issued an official statement regarding the issue of preinstalled Adobe Flash on the freshly unveiled MacBook Air.
According to Apple, Flash will not come preinstalled on Macs as a way to best ensure that users will not be deprived of the latest version of Flash. Instead, Mac users are encouraged to download the latest from Adobe. Similarly, all future Macs will come without Adobe Flash pre-installed. Apple spokesman Bill Evans reportedly stated the following to Engadget:
Quote:
"We're happy to continue to support Flash on the Mac, and the best way for users to always have the most up to date and secure version is to download it directly from Adobe."

Apple has announced that Java is deprecated as of the most recent update to OS X. This shot across the bow is getting some responses. To Jobs' claim that 'Sun (now Oracle) supplies Java for all other platforms,' James Gosling is quoted as saying that 'simply isn't true.' Much talk of a coming turf war is to be had. This certainly can't be unrelated to statements from Jobs recently covered on this website and is sure to make waves. Apple has enjoyed significant success recently accompanied by a widespread sense that they can do no wrong in business or design. However, is deprecating Java a mistake? It doesn't take much insight to connect the dots and see that Apple has starting marking friends and enemies relative to the increasingly heated fight for mobile and other platforms."

The People's Daily newspaper, which is the official news organ of the ruling Communist party in China, apparently recently posted a review of the iPad, where it complained about the locked down nature of the device, noting that 'There are many disadvantages. For example you cannot install pirate software on them, you cannot download [free] music, and you need to pay for movies you watch on them.' You would think a country that is in favor of locking down the internet so much would like a locked up device .

New York based rock band Atomic Tom uploaded a YouTube video of the group playing the song “Take Me Out†using only iPhone and instrument apps.
Shot on the New York city subway as it crossed the Manhattan Bridge, the video starts off with a title explaining that “In October 2010, New York’s Atomic Tom had their instruments stolen†before opening with vocals and a spare set of iPhone-powered piano notes.
“Fortunately,†the video says, “they know how to improvise†before launching into an rock ballad that manages to get some of the fellow public transport users nodding their heads and tapping their feet, even if an older gentlemen directly behind singer Luke White fails to be impressed.
In the space of a week the video has been watched over 2.5 million times with enthusiastic comments from hard-to-please YouTube users such as “excellent!â€, “this is pure amazing†and “I want an iPhone now.â€
In the video the singer Luke White singes into an iPhone like a microphone while string players Philip Galitzine on bass and Eric Espiritu on guitar strum away at the touch screens on their iPhones and Tobias Smith raps out percussion in a drum application.
The band has been surprised by the success of the video with their album and single flying up the iTunes charts into the realms of big label acts. It’s an impressive effort and whether or not the music is to your taste, you can’t help but admire the youthful energy a hand full of smartphones in the hands of a talented group of musicians managed to bring to a clattering New York subway train.

In September, Symbian 3 was Nokia's latest great hope for becoming relevant in the modern smartphone market. Now comes word that the Symbian Foundation is shutting down, ending the Symbian 3 and Symbian 4 efforts. Nokia is now banking on MeeGo, a collaboration with Intel whose release date — and fit to smartphones — is highly uncertain. InfoWorld's Ted Samson thinks that it's time for Nokia to swallow its pride and stop pretending it will ship MeeGo in time to matter, and instead consider adopting Android — or even Windows Phone 7, which after all might finally support copy and paste by the time Nokia decides to hitch its mobile wagon to a new horse."

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime believes Apple to be the biggest current threat to Nintendo's dominance of console sales.
Fils-Aime felt that the key advantage which Nintendo had over Apple, which sold over 14 million iPhones in the quarter ending September, 2010, is the content which its systems offer. He claimed that although games like Angry Birds offer fun in short bursts, he himself had spent over 150 hours playing Dragon Quest IX.
The key resource which Nintendo is pitching for, Fils-Aime believes, is time. "I compete with Zynga, I compete with surfing the net, I compete with the newspaper."
Recently, THQ's UK marketing director John Rooke told GamesIndustry.biz that he expected there to be a sales run on Wii and DS this Christmas, much as there was in 2009.
"It's one of those challenges that everyone forgets - what's happened before. The Wii is behaving a bit more like a toy - people get it out at Christmas, start playing with it again."

We just sat through an eight minute long video of someone at Pocketnow sampling every ringtone on his HTC Surround. Why did we do this? We honestly didn't believe that someone dedicate seven (plus) minutes of a YouTube video to ringtone samples! Suffice it to say, we never want to hear a ringtone again. Perhaps more importantly, our man points out that Microsoft seems to have left the ability to add your own custom ringtones out of Windows Phone 7 altogether. The Surround itself has a couple recognizable fan favorites that we recognize from AT&T and HTC phones past, so it looks like manufacturers and carriers will be able to bring their own to the table, but for the end user, it looks like you won't be able to roll your own -- at least for the time being. And now we're going to go put our phones on vibrate.

2010 hasn't exactly been a banner year for Symbian, with Symbian^3 getting lipstick-on-a-pig reviews via the just-launched Nokia N8, top-tier supporter Samsung moving on, and chief exec Lee Williams either quitting or being shown the door. On that note, it comes as little surprise that doomsday rumors are starting to swirl -- and The Register is citing a "source close to Symbian" as saying that new CEO Tim Holbrow is under orders to square things away for closure while some employees have apparently already been offered severance packages. Seeing how Sammy was one of the Foundation's primary sponsors (along with Nokia and Sony Ericsson), it's reasonable to believe that they're finding themselves in a cash pinch -- and now that Nokia is de-emphasizing the concept of Symbian^4 altogether, it seems like there might be little work for these guys left... especially considering that Sony Ericsson has no new Symbian products in the pipe. Putting a CFO in charge of a company is often a sign that the bottom line -- not product innovation -- is the priority, and realistically, there's never been a better time for Nokia to bring things back in-house since other manufacturers have moved on and MeeGo isn't ready for prime time just yet. Time to call Symbian dead? Far from it, but a major shake-up is starting to feel inevitable.

If you like your players orange and portable but don't have a tablet, you may be in luck. The VLC Media Player app, which recently made the iPad a little more codec-friendly, is now available in the App Store for the iPhone (4 and 3GS) and iPod touch. This new version is also said to support even more file types, offer better performance, and allows for the deletion of files right through its own interface. It's available now, so get downloading -- your classic cartoons await.

The iPhone 4, iPad and iPod Touch take the top three spots on kids' Christmas wish lists, research has found.
According to the Duracell Toy Report, around 39 per cent of the five to 16-year-olds who took part in the study are asking for Apple gadgets this year.
17 per cent of five to eight year-olds, 50 per cent of nine to 12 year-olds, and 66 per cent of 13 to 16 year-olds put the Apple items at the top of their lists.
In fourth place was the new Kinect for Xbox.
The report also revealed that modern children had on average of 39 toys or gadgets to play with - more than twice as many as their parents did at the same age.

October 27th, 2010, 00:40 Posted By: wraggster
The internet swung its fists around like Lady Macbeth on her sixth Stella last night when it was speculated, by analysts and journos alike, that Apple was going to make a sensational unsolicited takeover bid for... something.
That’s right; something. It could be EA, city analysts said. It could be Sony, others claimed.
And then, in what I’m sure is irrefutable evidence that there’s a complex and beautiful inherent logic to all of this, analysts started making completely different predictions.
Wait! It could be Netflix, they said. Hang on, what about Disney? Facebook, they screamed, it must be Facebook. Oh, that means Twitter too, innit.
Never doubt the sheer insatiability of market speculation. By the end of the day, we had one analyst, whom I’ll spare the mention of, suggesting Apple could be buying Adobe.
Sod it, why not? Apple has $51 billion in its iPhone-hugging pockets. That’s enough to match the GDP of Bulgaria, with spare change to buy Manchester United, the Dallas Cowboys, the New York Yankees, Real Madrid and – perhaps if he has no issues selling himself – Tiger Woods.
So why shouldn’t the analysts go a bit crazy? Why stop there? Why not predict Apple buying Nestle, claim ownership of the Catholic Church and acquire a 51 per cent controlling half the moon? (The shiny half, naturally.)
Of course, that’s only part of the reason why the markets suffered a spot of post-recession stress disorder last night.
Not only is Apple richer than Jesus, it’s also a company with interests in music, film, smartphones, PCs, apps, social networks and, of course, games.
It meant there was whole village of possible buyout targets that the analysts could throw their grenades at. But a games company? Let’s not be cruel.
Those predicting Apple is going to buy a games firm have published their spiel, I suspect, with little consideration for the manner in which Apple has invaded the games market, where it has succeeded and how it has rewritten the rulebook.
Apple’s made over $330 million from app and game sales in less than two years. And it’s doing this with a Greenspan-esque lighter-than-light-touch approach: No exclusivity deals, no timed DLC packages, no studio buyouts, no messing. It simply approves games, takes a 30 per cent cut, and watches them either sink or swim on its oceanic App Store.
Why Apple would like to risk making its own games in this money-making equation is quite beyond me. It’s like a casino owner deciding he can make a pretty penny if he spends a week or two on the roulette table.
Not wishing to talk the games industry down, but the publishing and development sectors are brutally factionalised, with firms often saddling frightening levels of debt just to nod ahead of the pack.
Sales are utterly unpredictable, too. While the likes of Just Dance and Aliens vs Predator jumped atop the charts, the heavily-promoted Enslaved and MMA made little more than a dent.
The last two years alone have seen old empires Midway and Atari fall off a cliff, and the biggest games studio in Scotland evaporate after spending five years on developing a game.
As much I like to visualise Apple announcing a game company acquisition (surely it would come with a ‘magical’ video of the lucky game company boss talking the usual bollocks to the background music of some acoustic-guitar-pop), the likelihood is slim.
Valve, however, might be an option. Steam is a digital buoy keeping the sunken ship of PC gaming away from deep waters. Bringing that exclusive to Mac would deliver immediate schadenfreude.
But I’m not especially convinced that Apple is going to procure anything at all, really; at least not anything as well defined as the big companies that are being cited.
Apple doesn’t build on existing businesses. It’s got to the stage it’s at today by, quite uniquely, building everything from scratch.

Last month, we learned from Gartner that Android will probably be the number-two worldwide mobile OS this year, and may lead the pack by 2014. With Android's growing use as the OS embedded in phones, in tablets, in set-top boxes, and in LCD HDTVs, it seems like the Linux-based OS could end up dominating the entire non-PC consumer device operating system space.

Let's just be honest, Apple: white stuff is impossible to manufacture. In fact, scientists have yet to prove that white even exists, so we're not sure why you're bothering to try to make a phone out of it! That's right: after a missed availability date in July and another delay after that, Cuptertino has once again pushed back the manufacture of the palest iPhone 4 -- this time clear into spring of 2011. It won't say why, but in all likelihood, they're still dealing with the same manufacturing woes they've had from the start. By the time mid-2011 rolls around, it seems probable that the release will be butting up against news of the iPhone 4's successor -- or at the very least, a CDMA version of the phone -- so it'll be fascinating to see how this timeline unfolds. In the meantime, yeah... might want to give up the wait and go for black.

If you believe the good readers of Droid Life (and there's no reason why you shouldn't), Google has started sneaking out its Instant search option to Android phones in the USA. So far, reports include the original Motorola Droid, the Droid X, and HTC's Droid Incredible. Lest you've been enjoying a lengthy holiday in the tropics, Google Instant throws up search results as you type your query, delivering either much faster results or a much more annoying search experience, depending on how you look at it. Reported operation so far aligns with our early hands-on, with Instant taking a bit of time to get its bearings, but the software is still at the beta stage, after all. Why not jump into your browser this morning and tell us if your Android's answering your questions before you even hit the Enter key?

Ah, there we go. Right around three months after we falsely suspected that El Goog had crossed the 100,000 mark in its Android Market, the company itself has today confirmed the passing of that line via Twitter. For those keeping count, it took but three months to go from 70,000 to 100,000 and seven months to go from 30,000 to this point. Of course, Apple's still holding down the lead in terms of sheer numbers with close to 300,000, but there's no question that the Android Market has nearly everything a boy (or girl, for that matter) could want. Except for a quote generator from Step Brothers. Oh, wait....

Your iPhone's passcode entry can't block everything, it seems -- at least not with iOS 4.1. We're hearing various reports that simply inputting a random number in the emergency call field, pressing call, and then promptly hitting the hardware lock button will take you to the Phone app, thereby granting you access to the call history, voicemail, and address book. We've tried this with iPhone 3G, 3GS, and 4, all with the same result. We can't get out of the field without trying to place a call, and after that we're still stuck back at the passcode screen. Additionally, selecting "share contact" and then the camera icon will give you access to the photo album. Pay mind that your particularly paranoid pals could probably use this to see if you really did stop calling your ex and delete all his or her pictures.

It's hard to tell if the ad embedded after the break is purely official, but it definitely reeks of HP. In a good way, that is. Uploaded by the same fellow that gave us our first sneak peek at webOS 2.0, this "Sizzle" ad shows 34 solid seconds of Palm Pre 2 action, complete with a glimpse at Angry Birds, Facebook and all sorts of new 2.0 features. We're aren't totally digging the tunes, but otherwise, it looks to be rather attractive -- way better than the first wave of original Pre ads, that's for sure.

Nokia executives have been facing a barrage of questions recently about why the company doesn't abandon Symbian and MeeGo mobile operating systems in favour of Google's Android OS.
EVP and general manager for markets Niklas Savander has discussed the firm's opposition to such a move, and why it has no intentions to introduce Windows Phone 7 handsets, in an interview with Cnet.
"We need to be confident that we can add a significant amount of value on top of whatever platform we choose," he said.
"Currently, we don't think the platforms out there which we are not using - Android and Microsoft - offers an incremental opportunity for us to add value that would sustain a competitive advantage over somebody else. So, no plans."

Futuresource Consulting has estimated that the mobile gaming market will generate $10 billion annually by 2014.
It also predicted significant growth for the sector this year, claiming that smartphone take-up would have risen by 50 per cent come the end of 2010 – meaning 270m units worldwide.
The analyst pegged Apple's iPhone range as covering 30 per cent of the mobile gaming market this year, generating $1.7 billion.
Nonetheless, it saw 'traditional' mobile games as retaining the lion's share of the sector this year, at 60 per cent compared to the 10 per cent accounted for by app stores.
However, Futuresource felt this would change dramatically come 2014, with app-based games comprising 95 per cent of the market by then.
Said Patrik Pfandler, lead mobile analyst at Futuresource, "The growth of in-apps payments is a key ingredient in the commercial success of apps gaming.
" In the short term we'll see the rise of the 'freemium' business model. In the longer run, we're going to see ad-funded apps games start to gain more traction as well."

Moving from regular SIMs to micro SIMs for the iPad and iPhone 4 was a fairly user-hostile move on Apple's part, seeing how it made moving between an iPhone and virtually any other GSM device quite a bit more difficult; the official explanation (for the iPhone 4, anyway) was that there simply wasn't room for a regular SIM, but that seems unlikely considering that you're only saving 10mm of length, 3mm of width, and 0mm of thickness. A more plausible scenario is that Apple viewed micro SIMs as a way to get ahead of the industry curve a bit and make it unpleasant for users to try to share an iPhone line with other devices, a concept that gets at the core of Apple's mantra of owning the entire ecosystem from end to end.
But could they be trying to take that concept another step further? GigaOM is reporting a rumor today that Apple is working tightly with security firm Gemalto -- you know, the SIM guys -- to integrate software-reconfigurable SIMs right into European iPhones that would be activated on the carrier of your choice using an App Store download. Why European models? Multiple carriers offer the iPhone in a number of European countries, so distribution is a bit more complicated there than it is in the US, though it's a reasonable leap to suggest that the same integrated SIMs would be use on new North American iPhones as well. From Apple's perspective, it's a win-win: trying to use your iPhone line with another device would be akin to pulling teeth, and more importantly, Apple wouldn't need to worry about bundling carrier-specific SIMs with devices. In fact, the move would make Apple's (and the consumer's) interactions with the carrier entirely virtual, all the way from manufacture to activation. Seems like the plan would require an extraordinary amount of buy-in from carriers who've become increasingly suspicious of Apple's goals lately -- but then again, they managed to get carriers to suddenly and rapidly deploy micro SIMs en masse, and if anyone could pull this off, it'd be Steve's boys and girls.

Curious where Palm model number P102UNA -- the North American UMTS variant of the Pre 2 -- might be headed? Since Bell and Telus rolled out their HSPA networks, Canada's become far more averse to CDMA than the US has, so it makes sense that they'd be getting Palm's latest handset in a GSM flavor, not a CDMA one (Ã* la Verizon). To that end, MobileSyrup's managed to score some shots of a Rogers-branded Pre 2 strutting its stuff, though they don't have a date or price -- and Palm's official line is still "in the coming months." Anyone out there planning on moving to France to get it sooner?

There have been numerous reasons why the White iPhone 4 may be delayed with one reason being the color mismatch between the home button and the body. Well this time there is another reason. A source has told CultofMac that the reason for the delay is a light leakage issue caused by the case being clear. Light from the case leaks into pictures taken by the back and front camera on the White iPhone 4 causing distorted pictures. This problem is non-existent on the Black iPhone 4 because of its already black case so Apple has been looking for a solution to this problem thus the delay of the White iPhone 4 till spring of next year.

As sure as the sun, Amazon's just announced it'll be bringing Kindle to the Windows Phone 7 platform sometime "in the coming months." The app was shown briefly today at Microsoft's Professional Developers Conference (PDC 2010) and, based both on that and the official screenshot from Amazon's teaser page (above), it's definitely wearing that stylish WP7 aesthetic quite well. Press release after the break, and check out More Coverage for a couple screenshots from its PDC presentation (care of istartedsomething's Long Zheng and his Flickr account). And while you wait for its inevitable release, we have full confidence you'll be able to find another platform to enjoy your Kindle books. Trust us.

It's easy to forget at this point, but Android wasn't a Google creation. Google bought the company in 2005 for an undisclosed sum (estimated to be around $50 million) and, well, let's just say things worked out pretty well for them. How well? Google's vice president of corporate development, David Lawee, told attendees at the Stanford Accel Symposium this week that the acquisition was quite simply Google's "best deal ever." Lawee further went on to note that he did have some initial skepticism about the deal, and recalls saying "I hope this guy does something" after seeing Andy Rubin around the building for two years. The fact that Rubin actually stayed after the acquisition eventually did inspire some confidence, however, with Lawee adding that it's obvious when a deal doesn't work out "because the people leave."

John Carmack has an article up on the Bethesda blog discussing the iPhone/iPad version of RAGE, which is said to run at an impressive 60fps. 'Managing over a gig of media made dealing with flash memory IO and process memory management very important, and I did a lot of performance investigations to figure things out. Critically, almost all of the data is static, and can be freely discarded. iOS does not have a swapfile, so if you use too much dynamic memory, the OS gives you a warning or two, then kills your process. The bane of iOS developers is that "too much" is not defined, and in fact varies based on what other apps (Safari, Mail, iPod, etc) that are in memory have done. If you read all your game data into memory, the OS can’t do anything with it, and you are in danger. However, if all of your data is in a read-only memory mapped file, the OS can throw it out at will.' And a tweet by Carmack yesterday suggests that an Android version of RAGE is on the way too.

We've been toying with a Palm Pre 2 for a few weeks now, but given that it's not "final hardware," we can't exactly make any firm judgments on the unit itself. Tim Pettitt, product manager for HP Palm, can. In speaking with MarkGuim.tv (and slyly handling a Verizon Pre 2), he not only confirmed that the company was relying on a layer of the famed Gorilla Glass to keep the front as scratch-resistant as possible, but also that the five megapixel camera is capable of capturing a shot every second. More importantly, however, he made clear that it wouldn't be just the developers nabbing an unlocked GSM Pre 2. According to Tim, that very handset will be "available direct from HP.com," though he stopped short of saying whether it would support T-Mobile's AWS 3G band. For AT&T loyalists, however, we're guessing this may be the best way to nab webOS on the network that's still rethinking possible.

We felt that Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 was a product that would be perpetually evaluated, tweaked and overhauled as time went on, and sure enough, we're already seeing those winds of change blow yonder. Reportedly, Microsoft has now removed the restriction that prevented developers from writing applications that would continue to operate behind a locked screen (without a user's explicit permission, anyway), enabling a whole host of apps to breathe in a manner in which they simply should. Audio apps, for example, will now be able to run in the background without yet another layer of pointless Vista-esque permissions, and Microsoft's Charlie Kindel said in an interview at its Professional Developer Conference that this move "is an example of us continuing to listen to customers." Frankly, it's just more fair -- Microsoft's own ingrained applications could already do this sans user permission (email, Zune playback, downloads, etc.), so it makes sense to give loyal developers that same opportunity. Of course, devs will have to prove that background apps won't burn up an absurd amount of battery life, but that's definitely not an unexpected qualification.

Think Hyundai's 70-inch multitouch table concept is hot stuff? Have a gander at this. The Table Connect for iPhone is dangerously close to completion, with a full-on mockup shown above. Put simply, this 58-inch multitouch surface accepts iPhone 4 connections via a 30-pin Dock Connector, and with a bit of magic, the table becomes your iPhone. The crew is currently wrapping up an alpha software release, and while a jailbroken iPhone is obviously necessary to get things going, the end result is bound to be impressive. Or at least hilarious. Here's hoping these eventually go on sale, but for now, feel free to hit the source link for one more shot and a slew of diagrams.

The gnuboy is a gameboy / gameboy color emulator, and now it’s ported for S60 5th edition. This was mainly made for the people who asked for gb / gbc support for gpsp. It was much easier to make by compiling a new emulator for S60 ;-)
What’s new on 0.5.3
•Fixed the issues with D-pad
•support for *.gbc files, so you don’t have to rename these files into .gb anymore.
gnuboy menu
know issues:
•No audio
•battery saves are not working, use save states instead
•SE and Samsung phones are not supported, sorry
•it’s quite unfinished, waiting for my N8 ;-)

Talk is heating up about Apple's plan for a second generation iPad. Although the rumor mill hasn't been nearly as generous with suggestions, tips, and insider accounts as it typically is for iPhone, iPod, and even Mac updates, Barron's - a credible, mainstream publication - is reporting that the next generation iPad will likely launch in the first quarter of 2011.
Investment firm Detwiler Fenton & Co. issued a note to investors this week that was intercepted and published by Barron's. Sources in the know report that the refreshed iPad will come with a forward-facing camera (presumably to accommodate the FaceTime video chat functionality) as well as a rear camera (a 5 MP camera and a VGA camera).

Theres been news that a phone converter for the Ipod Touch was coming from China but most Chinese sites are rather dodgy to say the least, but today Ishopvideogame have announced the Worldwide release of the Peel 520 Yosion phone convert for iPod Touch, heres the details in full:
One thing to note you will need to have jailbroken your ipod touch, but seems as most of the planet already has that wont be a problem.
First Some Screens

The Apple Peel 520 converts the iPod Touch into a working smartphone, adding an 800mAh battery that offers nearly five hours of talk time and 120 hours of standby use, dock connector and SIM card slot to the iPod. Although it takes a 3G sim card, it will not allow for 3G data at this time. It will cost around $60 and early reviews have indicated some issues with the devices software. Updates, release date, and more details to follow as we get them. Check the PR below for the full announcement. it works with the iPhone voice calling and text messaging app, so the iPod touch needs to be jailbroken to allow those iPhone default apps to be installed on the device. The adapter will not automatically add these apps to the iPod touch and users need to do it by themselves.
With these new cases the Yosion's peel 520 will allow you to turn any ipod touch into it!
No one expressly said that the Peel 520 would change your life, but if you play your cards right, that's not entirely out of the question. The mysterious doodad - which wraps around your iPod touch and holds an extended battery and SIM card - has caused quite the stir since being revealed late last month, and now it has undergone a full review overseas. Put simply, the device does work as advertised, turning one's iPod touch into a device fully capable of making/receiving calls as well as texts. 'Course, you'll need to jailbreak your device first, and you`ll have to deal with a static (read: impossible to adjust) call volume, quirky SMS delivery and blanked messages for missed calls, but hey - a small price to pay for the upgrade, right? Hit the "place bid" button to get it now!
Features:8 colors available: Black White, Orange, Green, Pink, Red, Yellow and Blue
3G voice and data usage SMS
800mAh battery, cable, charger
120 hours stand by and 4.5 hours talk time
Language: English
Manual: English
Extra function would eventually come with updates of internal software such as GPRS. Note that some design details may change on the final verse of Yosion Peel 520 regarding to the pictures on this page.
Be advisedMake sure your ipod touch is unlocked firstly
iPod required to be jailbrekaed
What is included1 X Peel 520 converts
1 X manual instruction
1 X Charger
1 X blister packing box
Those in the first 100 to buy with the coupon code itouch 25 will get $25 off and thats with free delivery.
