But the OS still dominates the market with a huge 56 per cent.
Last week, Strategy Analytics said the global smartphone shipment growth had slowed to 32 per cent in Q2, the weakest rate since Q3 2009.
Now, it reveals that the biggest OS in the space, Android, is also decelerating – at least in the US.
Overall US smartphone market growth slowed by five per cent, resulting in Android's Q2 shipments slipping by four per cent year-on-year.
That said, the OS still has a 56 per cent market share, and accounted for 13.4m of the total 23.8m devices moved in the quarter.
Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, said: "Android remains the number one platform by volume in the US, but its market share is approaching a peak and Apple iOS has been gaining ground.

Play team warns developers that in-app ads mustn't disrupt the user's device in any way.
Developers face one main question when designing a game; free, freemium or premium?
The trouble with free is that consumers can become irritated by in-app ads, particularly relentless 'airpush' type notifications and illegal data edits.
Concerned, Google has issued a new ad policy to Android developers that use the in-app ad option, according to Phandroid.
Any in-app ads that are used across Google Play items must not edit the user's device in any way. That means no unauthorised installing of shortcuts, icons or changing default settings.
And any changes must be easy to reverse, rather than a labyrinth-like experience.

To put it mildly, the OUYA console has had a better than expected funding run -- the project is now past the $6 million mark, or six times what it originally needed. The team still wants a little something to end the last week of fundraising with a bang. It just unveiled a limited edition brown, brushed metal version of the console with a controller to match; all it takes is a $140 pledge during the final push to August 9th and you've got the Yves Behar-chosen color for yourself. The special run should arrive as part of the wider March 2013 launch. If the original silver hue will do just nicely, thank you very much, OUYA has struck another content deal and will launch Vevo's music video hub side-by-side with the console. Click past the break for a peek at the controller, and consider a pledge on Kickstarter if you just can't stand the thought of having the same console as everyone else.

Another day, another major blow to the webOS community. The Open webOS project announced today in its blog that the fledgling OS won't support any of the existing hardware -- like HP's Pre 3 andTouchPad. While not completely surprising, this is disappointing for those who were hoping to wring a little more life out of their current webOS devices. Open webOS is targeting SoCs that support the Linux 3.3+ kernel and components with open source drivers. The blog post blames the existing hardware's "many proprietary components, including graphics, networking and lack of drivers for a modern kernel". Despite having access to these proprietary drivers, it appears HP isn't willing to make them available to the Open webOS project -- proof that sometimes you can have your cake, but not eat it too.

Many photographers will tell you that their least favorite shooting situation involves a portrait with the sun to the subject's back: there's a good chance the shot ends up an unintentional silhouette study unless the shooter meters just perfectly from that grinning face. Apple has just been granted a patent for the metering technique that takes all the guesswork out of those human-focused shots on an iOS 5 device like the iPhone 4S or new iPad. As it's designed, the invention finds faces in the scene and adjusts the camera exposure to keep them all well-lit, even if they're fidgety enough to move at the last second. Group shots are just as much of a breeze, with the software using head proximity and other factors to pick either a main face as the metering target (such as a person standing in front of a crowd) or an average if there's enough people posing for a close-up. You can explore the full details at the source. Camera-toting rivals, however, will have to explore alternative ideas.

Let's chalk this one up to something being lost in corporate translation. After a UK company rep issued a statement just days ago confirming the lack of an Android 4.1 upgrade path for certain 2011 Xperia handsets, Sony's delicately backtracking and claiming that public info was made "in error." While this official retraction may soothe previously irate owners' concerns, it's still not an outright commitment toJelly Bean, as the company's only now pledging to "actively [investigate]... upgrades for all devices" -- a carefully worded PR promise par excellence. To the Japanese electronics giant's credit, it has been pretty transparent and diligent about delivering ICS updates to its elder smartphone progeny, so we have plenty of reason to remain cautiously optimistic Google's newest OS will make the transition, too.

If you haven't picked up an Ouya (pre-order) yet, perhaps the news of a new Kickstarter-exclusive edition will entice you. Available right now through the end of the campaign (next Wednesday), the $140-or-more console comes in an exclusive darker color scheme, with a matching controller. Those controllers, by the way, now have "O" "U" "Y" and "A" button labels, never allowing you to forget what this thing is called.
A Kickstarter update also revealed that the Ouya will have a Vevo music video player, with a selection of over 50,000 music videos.

Hashtag trends on Twitter with an extravagant price tag.
The iPhone 5 still hasn't been announced by Apple, but chatter continues to heat up ahead of its expected September 12th launch.
Now it's materialised in two Twitter trends: '#800dollarsforaniPhone' and 'iPhone 5 $800'.
There's little substance to the hashtags, but naturally users of the mini-blog have voiced their outrage, with some expecting the eye-watering price to ensure the phone is waterproof, fireproof, crackproof, dirtproof, bulletproof, while transforming into a lifesaving autobot on demand.

Only two per cent between the two smartphone platforms.
New stats from Berlin-based ad network madvertise show just how narrow the gap is between Android and iOS across the major European territories.
The firm evaluated its network of six billion monthly page impressions to estimate smartphone OS shares across five of the biggest countries in Europe - UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and France.
It says iOS had a 30 per cent market share at the end of 2011, and has extended this to 32.79 per cent in Q2 2012.
But Android, which was six per cent behind in December, is now two per cent behind with a 31.43 per cent market share.
The latest edition of the UK ‘madreport’ can be downloaded here.

Apple intends to file an emergency motion to sanction Samsung for releasing documents that were not allowed as evidence in the companies’ patent trial.
Apple is positively livid about the leaked evidence, accusing Samsung of ‘polluting the jury’.
The US tech giant has sent a letter to Judge Lucy Koh stating: "Samsung's multiple references to the jury in its statement make plain its intent that the jurors in our case learn of arguments the court has excluded through the press. This deliberate attempt to influence the trial with inadmissible evidence is both improper and unethical."
Samsung’s lead lawyer has defended the press release, saying that the evidence was previously in the public record.
Samsung had hoped to present the court with evidence that showed it had designed the F700 phone, which Apple alleges is a copy of the iPhone, in 2006 – before the iPhone was even announced.
After Judge Koh said that the details should not be shown to the jury because it had been presented too late in the legal process, Samsung went ahead and released a statement at the request of members of the media, which contained the evidence.
"This deliberate attempt to influence the trial with inadmissible evidence is both improper and unethical," said William Lee, Apple's legal counsel.

Here is a telepresence robot that uses an Android device and LEGO NXT parts. [Wolfgang] had an extra phone on hand and decided to put it to good use. The Mindstorm parts make it really easy to produce a small robot, and adding the phone really ups the computing and connectivity options available to him.
The Android device is able to control the NXT bot via Bluetooth. [Wolfgang] didn’t go into detail on that part, but you can get some pointers on the topic from this other Android controlled Mindstorm project. [Wolfgang] wanted the ability to check in at home when he’s travelling. He uses nanohttpd on the Android device to serve up a simple web interface. It uses HTML5 to push a snapshot from the phone’s camera as user feedback, and provides a set of directional arrows which let him drive the bot around.
Obviously this thing is going to run out of juice if he’s away for too long. To combat that problem he included a battery which powers both the NXT parts and the phone. Now he just needs to build an inductive charging station and he’ll really be set.

Parents who've already purchased Archos' 7-inch Child Pad may be feeling somewhat miffed, as its screen's been upgraded from resistive to capacitive just two months after launch. There's no such thing as free multi-touch, so you'll have to fork out another ten bucks on top of the original asking price for the new version of the ICS slate, bringing the total to a cent under $140. Other internals are identical, so customers can still expect a 1GHz ARM processor, 1GB of RAM and 4GB of expandable storage, with some exclusive chipmunk-based content to boot. Just remember to let the kids have a go once in a while.http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/02/c...citive-screen/

In an effort to end today's dismal earnings report on a high, Sharp's president Takashi Okuda has purposefully let slip that his company is among those contracted to manufacture displays for a new iPhone. We already have numerous reasons to suspect the iPhone 5 will be announced around September 12th, and Okuda has now corroborated that by saying that "shipments will start in August." If earlier rumors and component leaks are to be trusted, the screen will be significantly larger (likely around 4-inches) and slightly less rotund than that on the iPhone 4S.http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/02/sharp-new-iphone/

IDC's cabal of statisticians, nerds and people who just love spreadsheets have handed down their latest document about the state of the tablet market. Of the 25 million slates shipped in the second quarter, 17 million of them were iPads -- giving Apple 68.2 percent of the market. Samsung came second with 2.4 million devices and Amazon third, although since the Kindle Fire maker doesn't reveal numbers, there's probably some guesswork involved there. Rounding out the top five are ASUS and Acer, although the former should expect to move up a place (or two), depending on the success of the Nexus 7 when Q3's results are released in a few months time.

Two major updates later (three if you count the tablet-exclusive Honeycomb), and Gingerbread is finally starting to falter. According to Google's latest two week survey of devices accessing the Play store, Ice Cream Sandwich is on the rise, filling out 15.9-percent of the Android user base. That's a full five points ahead of Android 4.0's July score, and it's eating into the OS' other flavors: Gingerbread (Android 2.3) dropped by 3.4-percent, Froyo (Android 2.2) by 1.8 and Eclair (Android 2.1) by a meager half a percent. Google's latest confectionery update, Jelly Bean (Android 4.1), made an appearance as well, eking out a shy 0.8-percent of the market. Check out Google's collection of charts for yourself at the source link below or let us know where your devices falls in the comments.

Cliffhanger's new title will be coming to Ouya and Linux

www.cliffhanger-productions.com
Cliffhanger Productions's Shadowrun Online will be coming to Ouya and Linux platforms assuming the project hits its funding limit. The game was previously slated for PC, Mac, Android, and iOS.
"Adding these platforms will make Shadowrun an even better cross- platform experience! We are very happy to be able to add Linux, which has a dedicated following amongst gamers, and connect all our players into one base," said Cliffhanger co-founder Michael Paeck.
"You can now easily play the game on your tablet, switch to your desktop PC and then later enjoy it on your Ouya-connected TV - without ever having to switch your account or character or suffer from restrictions based on your device! One of the advantages of our fluent turn-based system is the ability to engage in a multiplayer session with or against others without the usual frustrations when different players have different connection or input speeds!"
Shadowrun Online currently sits at $216,887 out of a goal of $500,000, with eleven days left in the funding drive.

Super Robot Taisen – known as Super Robot Wars on this side of the pond – is coming to iOS and Android devices in the form of a card battling game. (That's battling via cards ... not two giant, thin paper sheets scrapping it out for world domination.)
Siliconera reports that Super Robot Taisen: Card Chronicle will launch this fall as a free download with in-game items available for purchase, according to an article in Famitsu.
Joystiq has asked Namco Bandai if the mobile title will appear stateside, but the publisher has yet to respond at the time of publishing. We're going to gas up our mechs, just to be safe.

Mobile security firm warns operators and consumers of bank account hacks.
AdaptiveMobile says there's been a spike in the number of apps designed to save batteries, that are in actuality riddled with fraud and malware designed to scam users via premium text messages and updates.
The security specialist cautions operators to educate consumers about the risks, avoiding churn, distrust and disagreements when the charges come through to their customers' phone bills.
The shady apps tend to be promoted outside of mainstream stores, so potential downloaders should be weary of apps promoted with banner ads that redirect them to unknown quantities.
Gareth Maclachlan, COO and founder, AdaptiveMobile, said: "Most of these applications fail to improve battery life and are designed to be misleading and trick people in to signing up to recurring premium SMS charges.
"We have recently seen a spike in the number of these rogue apps, which is a violation of trust for users and carries a high risk of churn for operators.

Recent speculation suggested that the second Galaxy Note smartphone would arrive in October – or alternatively August 15th.
Wrong on both counts.
A Samsung spokesperson has officially said: "We plan to unveil the next Galaxy Note at the Samsung Mobile Unpacked event in Berlin on August 29th."
Naturally, no news was shed on the device's specs, but it's thought the 'phablet' will come with a flexible 5.5-inch display.
Interestingly, the date is exactly two weeks before Apple is expected to reveal the iPhone 5, while two Twitter trends suggested the next-gen iOS phone will be priced at $800 just yesterday.

Mobile analytics firm adeven has launched Apptrace, a free portal that allows publishers and developers to examine the iOS app space to determine when they should enter their apps into the market.
adeven claims a common problem with the App Store is a lack of visibility. Apptrace found that two-thirds of apps are off the list when users search for them on the iPhone and iPad, rendering them 'App Zombies'.
Apptrace has been built to read more than 300 million data points across 155 countries that have access to the App Store.
Other stats show 47 per cent of the top 1000 US games apps are free, while 17,317 of the 26,646 new apps launched in June 2012 were free.
Christian Henschel, co-founder and CEO of adeven, said: "Having worked in the industry for a number years my co-founders and I became frustrated with what we saw as broken offerings.

iOS tablet accounts for 17m units of the overall market.
IDC has released its Q2 estimates for the tablet market, and says that shipments crossed the 25 million mark, rising from 18.7m in Q1.
That's a 33.6 per cent increase quarter-on-quarter, or more impressively still, a 66.2 per cent rise year-on-year, up from 15m in Q2 2011.
The data points to the iPad for the stimulation, as the Apple sold more than 17m units of the iOS device during the quarter, up from 11.8m in Q1.
Tom Mainelli, research director, mobile connected devices, IDC, said: "Apple built upon its strong March iPad launch and ended the quarter with its best-ever shipment total for the iPad, outrunning even the impressive shipment record it set in the fourth quarter of last year.
"The vast majority of consumers continue to favour the iPad over competitors, and Apple is seeing increasingly strong interest in the device from vertical markets—especially education. While iPad shipment totals are beginning to slow a bit in mature markets where the device saw early traction, growth in other regions is clearly more than making up the difference."

The company's CEO Thorsten Heins has admitted that RIM seriously considered a switch to the Android operating system.
Heins made the admission during an interview with the Telegraph, during which he confirmed that RIM considered jumping ship to Android, before making its decision to move forward with Blackberry 10.
“We took the conscious decision not to go Android,†Heins told the Telegraph.
He continued: â€If you look at other suppliers’ ability to differentiate, there’s very little wiggle room. We looked at it seriously — but if you understand what the promise of BlackBerry is to its user base it’s all about getting stuff done. Games, media, we have to be good at it but we have to support those guys who are ahead of the game.
This was not Heins' only confession during the interview, admitting that RIM simply cannot keep up with Apple and Samsung when producing its devices.
Whilst previously refusing to allow other manufactures to produce Blackberry 10 devices, the RIM CEO stated that it may become a necessity to ensure the company's survival.
“We don’t have the economy of scale to compete against the guys who crank out 60 handsets a year,†Heins said.
“We have to differentiate and have a focused platform. To deliver BB10 we may need to look at licensing it to someone who can do this at a way better cost proposition than I can do it. There’s different options we could do that we’re currently investigating.â€
Whilst this may sound like a simple solution, it may prove more difficult for RIM than it initially anticipates.
Allowing other companies to produce and license Blackberry 10 products would mean they would have to pay for it.
In the same market where manufacturer's already pay Microsoft to produce devices under the Windows Phone flagship, and use Google's Android OS for fee, it's a plan that sounds easier said than done.

We have no idea why, but since we featured Botiful, the Android-powered telepresence robot a few days ago, the tip line has been awash in robot/Android mashups. Here’s a few of the cool ones.
Using an Android as a remote control
[Stef] used a Samsung Galaxy S3 . The Android sends accelerometer and gyro data over Bluetooth to an Android where it powers a pair of H-bridges to turn the wheels.
Turning Android into a Robotic Operating System
ROS, or the Robot Operating System, provides a bunch of utilities for any type of robot such as point-cloud mapping to multi-joint arm control. [Lentin] sent in a guide oninstalling ROS on Android. So far, he can get accelerometer data, stills from the on-board camera, have the robot speak and use the small vibrator motor.
“Just a quick procrastination projectâ€
Last May, [Josh] wrote in asking if a tread-based robot controlled through Skype would be a cool idea. We said ‘hell yeah’ and [Josh] scurried off to his workshop for a few months. He’s back with his tank-based robot (gallery of pics after the break). One really interesting bit is the robot responds to DTMF tones, allowing it to be controlled through Skype without any additional hardware. That’s damn clever.

An opinion piece at ZDNet makes the case that Intel is the best match for struggling handset-maker Nokia, arguing that Intel needs help breaking into the smartphone market and Nokia isn't tied as tightly to Qualcomm/ARM hardware as other vendors. From the article:"Another factor in favor of a union is Nokia and Intel's shared history — albeit not the most successful — of working together in mobile, thanks to their collaboration on the Linux-based MeeGo mobile OS. What's more, Intel has a long relationship with Microsoft, handy given the impending release of Windows Phone 8 and Nokia's new-found commitment to Microsoft's platform. The fact that Intel is currently using Android, as seen with Orange's San Diego smartphone, isn't much of a hindrance; Intel has already said it hasn't written off the idea of using Windows Phone 8 in future, and due to the x86 architecture, Android phones that use Intel's Atom processor won't even run all of the apps on Google Play, suggesting the relationship between Android and Intel isn't all it could be."

"In an interview with Fortune a few years ago, Steve Jobs explained that Apple never does market research. Rather, they simply preoccupy themselves with creating great products. On Monday, Apple's Greg Joswiak — the company's VP of Product Marketing — submitted a declaration to the Court explaining why documents relating to Apple's market research and strategy should be sealed. Every month, Apple surveys iPhone buyers and Joswiak explains what Apple is able to glean from these surveys. And as you might expect, Apple conducts similar surveys with iPad buyers. Apple wants all of these tracking studies sealed. Joswiak explains that if a competitor were to find out what drives iPhone purchases — whether it be FaceTime, battery life, or Siri — it would serve as an unfair competitive edge to rival companies. Further, competitors, as it stands today, have to guess as to which demographics are most satisfied with Apple products."A few other interesting facts have come out of the trial so far; Apple spent $647 million advertising the iPhone in the U.S. from its launch through fiscal 2011, and they spent $457.2 million advertising the iPad from its launch up to the same point.

"Responding to Microsoft's Windows 8 efforts, Apple CEO Tim Cook insisted in late April that combining a tablet and a notebook would be like converging a toaster and a refrigerator. But a patent application submitted by Apple last year — and made public Tuesday morning — proposes marrying a tablet and a keyboard to create 'a true laptop alternative,' whichGeekWire notes looks a lot like Microsoft Surface (comparison pic). In its patent filing, Apple describes various ways that a tablet's cover could be used as an I-O device — as a tactile-feedback keyboard ('word processing and email become much more efficient'), to display additional output, as a touchpad replacement, and even to receive stylus input. 'The experience,' claims Apple, 'is even better in some ways than the laptop experience.

[Sam] has been working on a cellphone controlled robot for a while now and with the launch of a few similar Kickstarter campaigns he thought it would be good to share his progress so far.
[Sam]‘s robot is controlled by an Android device with the help of an IOIO dev board. This setup provides more than enough computational power to send a robot on its merry way, and has the bonus of allowing [Sam] to connect additional sensors.
The case is designed to put the headers on the IOIO board on the outside, just above a little shelf perfect for holding a breadboard or two. With the right hardware and software setup, [Sam]‘s bot can rove around the neighborhood collecting data and sending it to a server in real time.
If you’re wondering why a tiny Android/IOIO powered sounds so familiar, it might be because of the Botiful robot we posted a few days ago. Unlike Botiful, [Sam] can only control his treaded Android bot through Bluetooth as the whole ‘programming a web interface’ is a bit over his head. Hopefully [Sam] will meet an enthusiastic coder when he brings his Arduino tank to Dorkbots Boston this evening.
You can check out a prototype of [Sam]‘s bot in action after the break.

John Carmack "saddened" by retreat from mobile, several projects now on hiatus
[h=3]id software[/h]id – defined by Freud as the primal section of the human psyche; id Software, located in Mesquite, Texas,...
www.idsoftware.com
id Software's has put all mobile development on hold while the studio finishes Doom 4, Polygon reports.
Speaking at QuakeCon, studio co-founder John Carmack admitted that the decision to close id's mobile projects "saddened" him, but the talent being employed to make them were required for Doom 4.
"I love doing the mobile work - taking that time, spending a month, a year or something working on a mobile project," he said.
"It was looked at as something that, yes, this is fun, this is fun for the company and it's entertaining and it makes money, but it's not a grand slam sort of thing on there. The Bethesda family really is about swinging for the fences."
As the iOS market flourished, Carmack made his enthusiasm for the new market clear, establishing a mobile team in 2007 that has produced six games, largely based on id's classic IP. The studio has "a couple of projects" for mobile on hold, including one that is basically finished, and Carmack made it clear that he intends to return to the space.
"I hope we get back to mobile in various ways in the future," he said, "but the big real aim is blockbuster, AAA titles, and for id that means Doom 4, it means that we get the whole company behind that after we get Doom 3: BFG Edition out the door. Essentially, everybody will be focused on Doom 4 as a project."
However, when asked about the possible release date for Doom 4, Carmack was evasive.
"Every decade there will be a Doom, but hopefully we can do better than that."

Hey, did you hear... Apple is making a 7-inch iPad. Well, the top brass at least thought about it, this much we know. What might it look like if it ever comes to be? Well, if you're willing to be a bit skeptical, it might look like the above. These images -- claiming to be legit iPad parts -- popped up on Chinese social media site Sina Weibo. There's little other activity on the account to back up the source, and the omission of a camera hole might irk some, but if these were early parts, then that could be something that is added later. For now, we're left to fill in the gaps with out imagination, which also includes hoping other recent teases might also make the leap into reality.

The back and forth of Apple and Samsung's spat can be tiring, it's true, but the legal debacle has its moments. Cupertino's Scott Forstall, for instance, took the stand on Friday to give some insights on the beginnings of what Apple called "Project Purple," and the secrecy that surrounded the first iPhone's development. "We're starting another project," Forstall would tell potential recruits to the project, "It's so secret I cannot tell you what the project is. You are going to have to give up nights and weekends for a couple years." These were the words that conscripted much of the team that would eventually build Apple's first phone. Forstall said that the engineers he recruited weren't told anything about the project or even who they would report to -- eventually, Apple locked down one of its Cupertino buildings, affectionately calling it the "purple dorm" for its vague pizza-like aroma.
When Apple's attorney questioned the senior vice president of iOS software about how the Project Purple team drove innovation, Forstall went on to describe the challenge of building a touch-centric OS. "Everything we dealt with before was based on mouse and keyboard, and here we were changing the entire user interface to be based around touch. We had to rethink everything about what big controls would be knowing where you are in the document, knowing when you reach the list... Every single part of every device had to be rethought for doing touch." Samsung's legal team was more concerned with how Project Purple was inspired by competitor devices; Forstall responded by saying that Apple simply tested Purple's call performance against other devices, noting that "it's fine to benchmark for performance reasons, it's not OK to copy and rip something off."
The comments are interesting, but they probably won't weight too heavily on the jury's final decision. Still, the stories are entertaining, and worth a read for those interested in the iPhone's origins. Even so, we'll be glad when the patent wars are finally over.

During today's proceedings at the Apple vs. Samsung patent infringement trial in Northern California, an internal Apple email came to light, where Senior Vice President of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue suggested that the company manufacture a 7-inch tablet, anticipating a market for a smaller slate. The email reportedly dates back to January of 2011, and was sent to Scott Forstall, Tim Cook and Phil Schiller, according to The Next Web. AllThingsD added that the topic originated with an email from a reporter, who shared that they had switched to a 7-inch Samsung tablet from the iPad, because they found the smaller size of the Tab more appealing. Cue reportedly agreed with the findings, and made his own suggestion. That email hasn't led to a smaller form-factor iPad to date, but with rumors heating up around an upcoming "iPad Mini," it's possible that Apple's compact tablet could one day arrive. And Cue was right -- there's clearly demand for a 7-inch tablet. Update: Read the email for yourself after the break.

Want the latest version of Android on your device? Sure, we all do, and despite HP having put theTouchPad out to pasture long ago, the modder community isn't giving up hope. One brave soul over atXda Developers who goes by the handle Jscullins can (and should) be thanked for bringing bargain tablet lovers a dose of CyanogenMod 10. It's still a preview build lacking, among other things, sound and video acceleration, but if you absolutely have to get a buttery smooth UI on your tablet right now hit up the source link for the download. Or, you could just check out the video of it in action after the break courtesy of Liliputing. It's probably safer.

Apple, by going to a jury trial to defend the patents of its most prized products, is allowing competitors and the public to see inside one of the most secretive companies in the world. From the article: 'While in court on Friday, Philip W. Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president for worldwide product marketing, pulled the curtain further back when he divulged the company’s advertising budgets — often more than $100 million a year for the iPhone alone. Also at the hearing, Scott Forstall, senior vice president for iPhone software, explained that the early iPhone was called “Project Purple.†Mr. Forstall said it was built in a highly secure building on Apple’s campus. A sign on the back of the building read “Fight Club.†Behind the security cameras and locked doors, most employees on the project did not even know what they were working on.'"

68700 - The Phone Home Number lets youngsters call home for free in an emergency.
As finger-wagging tabloids love to tell us, the age at which children are getting mobile phones is getting lower and lower.
However, even clever, mature, sensible adults run out of credit, so it's no surprise that youngsters do too and two thirds of all parents worry about their kids being unable to contact home in an emergency because they've run out of money.
Independent Radio News (IRN) is launching a new service called 68700 - The Phone Home Number which allows youngsters to call home for free with or without credit. Parents pay £3 per month on their telephone bill and their children then dial a single number 68700 for direct calls home. They also have the option of calling either their mum or dad in separated families.
Tim Molloy, managing director, IRN said: “Our research reveals running out of credit is a serious safety concern for both parents and their children. 68700 gives parents peace of mind their children can always call them in an emergency day or night, credit or no credit. It also encourages kids to stay in touch at other times since they are not paying for the call.â€
Customers subscribe to the service by texting SAFE to 68700 for a fee of £3 a month. Customers can unsubscribe by texting STOP to 68700 at any time.

Antenna says the stadiums might be full if LOCOG had a mobile version of tickets.london2012.com.
London 2012 has been a huge success for spectacle and sporting drama. The only downside has been the empty seating – especially given the huge latent desire among Brits to buy tickets.
Last week it emerged that one fifth of accredited seats at the Olympics remained unfilled despite efforts to reclaim them for general sale.
Anger has been directed at organiser LOCOG, which even obstructed a Twitter service that was set up to alert followers to the sites with tickets available.
Now, mobile site optimisation specialist Antenna has waded in to criticise the body for not building a mobile version of its ticketing site.
Although there is a mobile-optimised London2012.com site, no such option exists for tickets.london2012.com.

Canalys's Q2 2012 country-level shipment estimates stated that China saw smartphone growth of 199 per cent year-on-year and 32 per cent over the previous quarter.
That eye watering growth meant a record breaking 42 million devices were shipped into the channel in China – 27 per cent of the 158 million global smartphone shipments.
Interestingly, the Chinese boom was largely fired by local OEMs like Oppo, K-Touch and Gionee, which collectively shipped 25.6 million units for 60 per cent of the market.
Samsung was top at 17 per cent, but ZTE, Lenovo and Huawei were next. Lenovo grew 2,665 per cent year-on-year.
Apple was fifth, with shipments up 102 per cent year-on-year, but down 37 per cent compared to Q1 2012.
Nicole Peng, Canalys Research Director for China, said: "The rise of the domestic tier-one brands has been aided by a number of factors. Their reactiveness to market demands and deep understanding of local consumer behaviour and preferences have been key in helping them surpass international peers in the fast-evolving Chinese market."

The Kantar Worldpanel ComTech says the Galaxy SIII has supercharged Samsung and that the firm now has five of the top ten devices in the UK alone
The finding is part of Kantar's regular survey of the platform space, which reveals yet another surge in Android in most markets.
Indeed, the success of Galaxy SIII helped push the OS's share of the big five countries growing from 42.7 per cent in July 2011 to 65.7 per cent in July 2012.
These gains largely came at the expense of RIM and Symbian. RIM’s steepest decline has been in the UK, at 10.9 per cent now compared with 21.6 per cent last year.
Windows Phone remains stuck at three per cent.

Smartphone and tablet titles should provide a tailored user interface, says Bungie founder
Developers porting games heavily reliant on dual analogue control to touch screen devices is lazy, the founder of Halo developer Bungie has claimed.
Speaking to GI, Alex Seropian said he felt that many ports to tablet and smartphone devices were unnecessary as they often did not fit in with the touch screen user interface.
He said that after it took developers a long time to perfect the dual analogue control system to make it feel as intuitive for first person shooters as a mouse and keyboard, and that it was a ‘braindead’ approach to try and emulate that on touch.
“The transfer of the whole dual sticks thing just amazes me, that anyone would think that's a good idea,†said Seropian.
“To make a good shooter you have feel like you have a lot of control, you need enough bandwidth in the skill curve so that you feel you can get good at it, that you can master it.

US free-to-play studio U4ia making console's first FPS Offensive Combat
Former Activision developers working on the Call of Duty franchise have pledged their support for the upcoming Android console Ouya.
The company's former head of publishing Dusty Welch said his new studio U4ia, which also includes ex-Activision exec producer Chris Archer, would be developing the hackable platform’s first FPS, Offensive Combat.
“Everyone here at U4iA Games is excited to bring our titles to Ouya,†said Welch.
“Given that consoles are so expensive and face an uncertain future, Ouya stands out as the perfect example of an affordable home-entertainment platform created specifically for core gamers like us. We've used our profound wisdom to create a cheeky, free-for-all shooting mash-up called Offensive Combat.
“Moving forward, we can't wait to bring all-new games in the Offensive Combat universe to the Ouya platform."

Bruised mobile carriers such as AT&T and Verizon are 'fighting back' against Apple's iPhone, despite the fact that the device has helped them eke out consistently higher average revenue per wireless subscribers since its launch. To hear the carriers tell it, the iPhone is a major inhibitor to their profits as last year they were 'only' generating wireless service profit margins in the 38% to 42% range. But ever since these beleaguered companies started 'fighting back' by implementing data caps, increasing fees for device upgrades and implementing longer waiting periods before users can switch devices, they’ve seen their wireless service profit margins surge. AT&T reported a 45% margin in Q2 2012 and Verizon reported a record-high 49% margin.

Chip design firm ARM, whose architecture is used in many smartphones, tablets, and connected TVs, announced that its new graphics processing unit (GPU) designs hitting the market this year would be adding 50 percent greater graphics performance in the same area and power draw as current chips. The second-generation Mali T600 GPUs, comprised of the Mali T624, the Mali T628 and the Mali T678, provide "optimal performance and energy efficiency for different end devices," according to ARM.

These new GPU designs deliver up to 8 cores, promising buttery smooth interface performance as well as improved compute performance. Additionally, ARM is including a small area of silicon devoted to new graphics compression code, which they have named Adaptive Scalable Texture Compression (ASTC) and provided as an open standard. Right now, developers have to choose between codecs to get different levels of texture compression for different platforms; ARM is hoping to eliminate that issue, making it easier for developers to create art that can be used across platforms.

Carl Freer on the "dark side" of bringing the ill-fated handheld to market
Former Gizmondo boss Carl Freer has responded to the negative view of the ill-fated handheld, calling it, "a slap in the face" for its development team.
In a new interview with Eurogamer, Freer recounts the story of the Gizmondo's creation, from its early days as a GPS device for tracking the whereabouts of children, to the series of logistical errors and scandalous allegations that preceded its demise - principally involving key executive Stefan Eriksson, who was linked to the Swedish mafia and served jail-time after crashing a Ferrari Enzo in Malibu, California.
Freer believes that this chain of events - which ultimately gave Gizmondo the dubious distinction of being the least successful handheld gaming system in history - has obscured the vision and hardwork that Tiger Telematics invested in the product.
"It's a slap in the face to anyone who spent time working on it to hear comments like that," he said. "Unfortunately some of the more colourful stories, particularly about Stefan and what happened in Malibu, were true. That's fuelled the scandalous element. For those of us who put a lot of time into it, it's a sad ending."
Freer claims that Eriksson's ties to the "Uppsala mafia" - largely due to an article in the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet - were exaggerated by "manipulators" who wanted to see the company fail.
"Sweden suffers from the biggest epidemic in the world. It's called jealousy," he said. "Unfortunately, that article was fabricated from an agenda.
"I'm talking about the power of share manipulators who have influence over what the media writes. When a lot of money is at stake, you start attracting people who are not interested in the longevity of the company but the performance of the stock. That's the dark side of running a company."
Ultimately, Freer admits that "errors were made" that contributed to the Gizmondo's failure, but even now he still hopes for a revival.

Rumors about the new iPhone have basically everything but the screen shrinking. That includes the SIM card and its ejectable drawer. French site NoWhereElse scored some photos of what it claims is the new tray, alongside the 4S version for comparison. As you can clearly see, the new SIM slot is narrower and the insert has a slightly different cosmetic design. If the part turns out to be legit, it will hardly come as a surprise. Apple made a big push for a nano-SIM standard to be adopted over competing designs fromNokia, RIM and Motorola. If the rumors and Cupertino's reliable refresh schedule hold up, you wont have to wait long to find out for sure. The next iPhone is expected to be announced next month. Hit up the source link for a few more photos.

Right around 20 days after iOS 6 beta 3 was beamed out to developers, beta 4 is now making its way into those same hands via an OTA download. We've just confirmed that the files are indeed being pushed out, with the changelog showing fixes related to Facebook integration, the Address Book, authorization statues, and Apple TV / Bonjour workflows. You'll also get a patched-up Dictionary, iTunes and Maps, amongst other things. The entire list of updates is embedded after the break, but we'd recommend a stiff cup of coffee before trying to digest 'em all.
Update: For the eagle-eyed, yes, this update does indeed remove the YouTube app from the iOS homescreen. If you're out of the loop, Google owns YouTube. And Apple hasn't shied away from doing its best to distance iOS from Googlefied apps...

It's a good time to be a student. Last year, there were some solid picks, but it was still very clear that those willing to scrimp and save a little longer had a much better experience. This year, it's a people's revolution. Thanks to cutthroat competition, there are some exceptional phones out there, even for those of you hoping to avoid eating ramen noodles for a month. Software has taken a leap forward too, with many phones now offering a vital way to remember when that term paper is due... or to procrastinate at the pub. We have nine choices of phones in our shortlist, spread out across three categories to serve everyone from the I-just-need-a-phone freshman to the overloaded doctoral candidate. While you're eying the selection, don't forget to enter our giveaway and potentially ease the burden -- who knows, you may get a phone you want rather than the one dictated by your student loan.

[h=2]Prepaid / Budget[/h]

|
[h=4]Nokia Lumia 900[/h]The Lumia 900 now sits in the budget category thanks to a price cut, although you almost wouldn't know it from the features. LTE? A 4.3-inch screen? A capable 8MP camera? Check. And while some look at that simple Metro interface and the smaller app market with a jaded eye, Windows Phone is a good pick if you're new to smartphones and like living in Microsoft's ecosystem.
Key specs: 1.4GHz single-core Snapdragon CPU, 4.3-inch WVGA display, 8MP rear / 1MP front cameras, Windows Phone 7.5.
Price: $50 on AT&T |
[h=5]You might also like...[/h] |
|
 |
iPhone 4
Don't be put off by the up-front price -- look at the $35 monthly plan on Virgin Mobile and you'll know how much you'll save in the long run. Mating a Retina display, a still-solid 5MP camera and iOS 5 with a cheap unlimited data plan? That's an easy choice if you're at all drawn in by iOS or just love a media-savvy smartphone.
$550 (without contract) on Virgin Mobile |
 |
HTC One V
It might be the baseline of HTC's 2012 smartphone triumvirate, but the One V is no slouch. That rigid design, 1GHz processor, pretty 3.7-inch WVGA display and capable 5MP camera add up to a compelling starter smartphone. Android 4.0 also stands out in a crowd full of basic devices running last year's Google OS flavor. Combine all those with a rock-bottom, off-contract price and the One V is hard to top for the money.
$200 (without contract) on Virgin Mobile |
[h=2]Mid-range[/h]
|
[h=4]Samsung Galaxy Nexus HSPA+[/h]If it weren't for the need to (normally) use AT&T or T-Mobile instead of a low-cost carrier, this would be in the budget category. It's that much of a value. While the Galaxy Nexus is now strictly middling in terms of processing power, having the world's first Android 4.1 phone for this kind of off-contract price more than makes up for the difference. The new OS makes it exceptionally responsive, and Google Now will help you find out just how late you'll be to class if you miss the bus.
Key specs: 1.2GHz dual-core TI OMAP 4460 CPU, 5MP rear / 1.3MP front cameras, 4.65-inch Super AMOLED HD display, stock Android 4.1.
Price: $349 on Google Play |
[h=5]You might also like...[/h] |
|
 |
HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE
Some will decry the smaller screen, down-clocked 1.2GHz chip and the lack of burst photography versus the One S at T-Mobile -- fair enough. But the lower price, better-quality display and LTE make this the more tempting mid-range phone. You'll still get a top-notch rear camera, a smartly customized Android 4.0 build and traditional expansion via a microSD slot.
$150 on Verizon |
 |
Motorola Atrix HD
Outside of the battery life, the Atrix HD is a great value for the money: it's mating a 4.5-inch, high-quality display with a fast 1.5GHz processor, all at half the contract price of similar-spec handsets. Motorola has also smartly scaled back the customization to let Android 4.0 shine brighter. If you like the aesthetic of Google's new hardware brand, it's a winner.
$100 on AT&T |
[h=2]Money's no object[/h]

|
[h=4]HTC One X[/h]Now that it's just $100 on a contract, the One X just edges out its Samsung rival as our pick for the top end. Yes, it sheds the removable battery and microSD slot -- we know the impact. But the One X delivers a leaner interface, higher build quality and arguably the best display of any phone, all at half the up-front price of its peers. Performance (both in the 1.5GHz chip and LTE data) is top-notch, and the 8MP camera enjoys both longer burst shots as well as a simpler, faster interface for capturing Frosh Week escapades.
Key specs: 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 CPU, 1GB RAM, 4.7-inch Super LCD 2 display, unibody design, 8MP rear / 1.3MP front cameras.
Price: $100 on AT&T |
[h=5]You might also like...[/h] |
|
 |
Samsung Galaxy S III
Don't worry, we still like what the Galaxy S III has to offer. A gigantic and beautiful 4.8-inch screen, a fast 1.5GHz processor with 2GB of RAM and all the removable expansion you'd like make it a go-to device for Android fans. The best part is knowing that you don't have to think much about your carrier: all the majors are offering it largely unchanged, so you don't have to compromise to get your Galaxy fix.
$200-280 on AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile,US Cellular and Verizon |
 |
Apple iPhone 4S
While it's likely going to be replaced partway into the fall semester, the iPhone 4S is still a pleasing pick even several months into its lifecycle. Get over the small 3.5-inch screen; the 4S is surprisingly fast, and it has what's still considered the gold standard for 8MP cameras. Siri may be quirky too, but it's handy for reminding yourself to study for that next exam.

The developer behind iOS and Android shooter Dead Trigger has claimed that consumer piracy is a force that can never be stopped.
Madfinger initially released Dead Trigger as a paid-for title but switched to a freemium model after what it described as an“unbelievably high†level of piracy with the Android version.
“Our main goal is not to make lots of money, we do not want to be the second Disney or sell out the company for millions of dollars,†CEO Marek Rabas told Gamezebo.
“We just simply enjoy making games. That is why we are here. So, why dwell on the fact that 80 per cent to 90 per cent of the people do not respect your hard work and steal the game? Games are always stolen, there is not much we can do about it. I do not believe that piracy can be stopped.â€
That’s not to say that Rabas wouldn’t like to see further action taken to limit piracy. Indeed, he goes on to place the burden of responsibility squarely at the foot of platform holders.
“In my opinion, the amount of piracy is equal to how easy the pirating is, and the game developer has nothing to do with it,†he added.
“It is really very sad for us and the gaming industry that with a few clicks of a mouse (err.. touches), a user can install the game and use it for free. It‘s definitely easier than setting up an account on iTunes or Google Play, filling out large forms and answering all security questions.
“This is why we need help with security from the companies who make the hardware. Their hardware is selling because of our content, and they should protect our games from being stolen.â€

The store, at Gatwick’s North Terminal, lets users view a range of 80 products displayed on large virtual fridges. Each one has a unique barcode, which can be scanned using a special Tesco app.
Customers select ‘groceries’ from the app. They select a home delivery slot and can book a date up to three weeks in advance.
Around 30,000 people depart from Gatwick’s North Terminal each day and they wait around 70 minutes for flights. This is the downtime Tesco is hoping to fill.
The store will be open from August 6th to 19th. It was all done first in Korea last year.
Ken Towle, Tesco’s Internet retailing director, said: “Our business in Korea is teaching us a lot about how customers and technology are transforming shopping. It gives us a unique window into the future and the chance to try out exciting new concepts.â€

Developers will have to wait for Windows Phone 8.
The Verge reports that Microsoft has started to put out info on the Windows Phone Dev Center, which gives developers guidelines on app submissions and monetisation options.
But it looks as if in-app micropayments will not be enabled on the interim version of the OS – WinPho 7.8. Instead, that option will arrive with the launch of Microsoft's transformative WinPho 8 platform later this year.
Micropayments will be made possible through the forthcoming Wallet Hub feature, which stores payment information that can be accessed through a PIN entered during in-app transactions.
The implication therefore is that Wallet Hub will not feature in 7.8 either.
Of course, Wallet Hub is about far more than micropayments. The feature, unveiled by Microsoft in June, is a 'control centre' for NFC contactless payments, deals, loyalty cards, in-app purchases, and credit and debit cards.

Rapid turnaround just may be the name of Facebook's game. Just a few weeks after its SDK 3.0 for iOS reached beta, the new developer tool has surfaced in a polished version. As it's shipping, the SDK continues to emphasize a more iOS-native experience, better API support and slicker session management. Any iOS 6 integration will still have to wait until Apple finishes its software update; Facebook is keeping a separate beta track active to serve forward-thinking developers. The social network's regular members aren't quite getting the same reward, however. The expanded app support is being followed just as quickly by a mobile ad beta. While Facebook is still sparing us from a full-bore marketing assault, it's letting developers pitch their Android and iOS apps from Facebook's mobile portals, with a quick hop to the relevant app store if the title isn't already loaded. While there's no estimated completion date, we have a feeling that this is one Facebook beta where most customers won't mind a delay or two... or ten.

OUYA's slew of collaborations isn't letting up, even with less than two days to go before its fundraising round is over. The XBMC team has just pledged that its upcoming Android app will be tailored to work with the upcoming console. While the exact customizations aren't part of the initial details, the media center app developers will have early access to prototypes of the OUYA hardware. There's suggestions that there won't be much of a wait for the Android port of XBMC, whether or not you're buying the cuboid system -- XBMC's developers note that Android work should be merged into the master path once "final sign-offs" are underway. All told, though, the OUYA is quickly shaping up into as much of a go-to media hub as it is a game system.
Update: OUYA itself has also posted word that TuneIn's radio streaming is also on its way. And just to top off its efforts, the company has posted rendered images that better show the scale of the console: ourJoystiq compatriots note that it's really a "baby GameCube" in size, and its gamepad looks gigantic by comparison.

Just look at the Ouya above, getting picked on by that meaty finger. The Android-powered, Kickstarter-funded $99 console is, apparently, very small. Images released this morning put context to the pictures of the console and its controller that we've seen already. The console is super, super small. Like a baby GameCube. All it needs is a big goofy handle and we're all set on that comparison.
The Ouya's Kickstarter has just under 40 hours left until it's fully funded. We'll be spending that time evangelizing its smallness, in case that wasn't already clear.

If we didn't know better, we'd say that Sony was playing some sort of protracted game of hang-man with its Xperia line. S... P... U... and now possibly T? It's the phone bearing that latest letter in the cryptic message that we see before us today. In fact -- thanks to nixanbal.com -- we can see it from pretty much every conceivable angle. The S4-powered droid -- complete with foldout memory card slot and protruding camera -- is tipped to be announced pre-IFA, so we'll no doubt have the full skinny then. In the meantime head past the break -- and then tap the source -- to see the minty-phone in all its glory.

As much as Apple would love for Kwon Oh-hyun to turn up at court and tearfully confess to being a copycat, that's probably not going to happen. Instead, Cupertino's lawyers are burrowing through Samsung's history in search of a legal smoking gun, and one of their latest submissions has been presented as just that. It's a 132-page document written in 2010 by Sammy engineers that directly compares the iPhone against the Galaxy S and makes recommendations about how the latter should be more like the former. The excerpt shown above, which focuses on the aesthetics of icons on the rival handsets, even appears to contain advice about how Samsung should copy Apple without appearing to copy them so much, whereas the full document embedded after the break reveals how all-encompassing the internal guidance was. On the flip-side, Samsung may well argue that any responsible company should compare itself to its competition in this manner, and you can bet there's an army of lawyers beavering away right now to make that sound convincing.

Analyst says an acquisition or BB10 licensing deal is best survival option for the BlackBerry OEM.
In March, rumours surfaced to suggest Samsung would push $1.5bn into RIM to seal access to the forthcoming BlackBerry 10 OS.
Talk soon died down.
But like a zombie rises from the dead, so has the rumour, as Jefferies analyst Peter Misek reckons a Samsung-based play is the best way for RIM to revive interest in its 'subscale' platform, according to AllThingsD.
Misek, said: "We believe RIM is attempting to revive discussions with Samsung regarding a BB10 licensing deal.
"We believe Samsung is considering ramping up its internal OS development efforts, licensing BB10, or buying RIM. We think any acquisition is unlikely until after BB10 launches."

Tech journalist's hacking causes Apple and Amazon to look at their security systems.
Apple has put a 24-hour ban on users changing their Apple ID passwords via calling Apple support after journalist Mat Honan was hacked.
Pictured here, Honan’s iCloud account was hacked on Friday with data wiped from his iPhone, iPad and Macbook.
The hackers also took control of his Twitter account, using it to post racist and homophobic messages.
It’s reported that the hackers used a combination of Amazon’s credit card record keeping system and Apple’s user authentication requirements. These two pieces of information, along with some social engineering, gave the hackers access to the iCloud account.
A statement from Apple read: “We found that our own internal policies were not followed completely.â€

“We will only release the absolute best games possible with higher standards than most in the industry currently have.â€

Rival operating systems forge a new record – mostly thanks to Android.
New data from IDC says Android and iOS accounted for whopping 85 per cent of smartphone shipments in Q2.
And real diamond for Android is Samsung, which powered 44 per cent of all 104.8m Android-based smartphone shipments during the quarter, enabling the OS to nab a 68.1 per cent majority share.
As for Apple, shipments rose by 5.6m to hit 26m, but its share dipped 1.9 per cent, gobbled up by Google's OS, and its likely shipments won't spike until the release of the iPhone 5.
Meanwhile, BlackBerry secured just a 4.8 per cent share and Symbian bagged 4.4 per cent, with respective shipments of 7.4m and 6.8m.
Ramon Llamas, senior research analyst, IDC, said: "Android continues to fire on all cylinders.

Android console approaches the finishing line, with millions more dollars of backing than expected.
As the Kickstarter funding round for Ouya comes to an end, more firm details are being made available.
Not only is there the exciting news that XBMC will be available on the device from day one, but now there is a list of titles that will ready on release.
Ouya has also added radio support via a partnership with TuneIn, who recently reached 40m active listeners.
As more pictures hit the web, it's obvious that the console is much smaller than expected, so fears about cluttering up the area around your TV can be put to bed.
The line-up (collated by Blue Collar Art) includes some includes some well-known titles as well as plenty from smaller indie developers. And remember, all of these games will be free to play, at least at first.

PCR talks to Tom Lawton about how the BubbleScope went from a sunset-inspired idea to a retail ready product.
How did you come up with the idea for BubbleScope?
I came up with it in the spring of 2001 while I was sitting in the open carriage doorway of a train, and looking out at the most amazing panoramic sunset. I’d been travelling non-stop for 56 hours through India. This was before we had camera phones, Google streetview and even before the iPod was launched. It wasn’t so much a flash of inspiration but a gradual awakening to the idea of designing a compact and affordable, easy-to-use 360 bubble camera.
Going from idea to production hasn’t been an easy journey...
When I started the project I knew nothing about cameras or optical systems, let alone how to potentially build the brain of the system into the software on a mobile handset.
Thankfully, as the project has developed so too have the technological building blocks behind it. Like all good projects, I started off with months of research to discover everything I could about the field of omni-directional imaging.
Then came the concept drawings, reams of them, followed by ray-traced optical simulations. Even these were years before I started the expensive job of diamond turning mirrors and building lens systems. There have been many technological and personal breakthroughs to get the point I am at now, with a retail ready product and internal distribution in place. All I can say is that if you want to succeed then never give up.

Apple and Google have been at each other's throats for months, only now, it's starting to spill over into their products.
With the latest beta release of iOS6 now available, many have been quick to point out the operating system's new features - as well as those that have been dropped.
From the moment the new OS is installed, one thing is crystal clear; Apple is going through a very public split from Google, and it's had huge implications.
iOS6 has banished the majority of Google's services, most of which, have been a staple feature of users' iPhone home screen's since the device's launch back in 2007.
Here's a rundown of what not to expect in iOS6:
Google Maps Apple's outright war with search-engine giant Google starts here, with its removal of the company's maps app, which users have relied on throughout the iPhone's lifespan.Dropping Google Maps was a move widely expect from Apple following its recent acquisition of several mapping companies.Apple's mapping app will introduce a variety of benefits over Google Maps, particularly, its use of layered images for different zoom levels, which means users will no longer have to wait for those pesky blocks of blurriness to load as they take a third wrong turn.It will also introduce 3D buildings and long-requested turn-by-turn voice navigation, meaning users will no longer have to face the uncertainty of their best friend's sub-par navigation skills. YouTubeWhilst the removal of Google Maps was widely expected, YouTube's disappearance from iOS6 came as more of a shock. The news has split the Apple community, with half lamenting the loss of the app, whilst the other question the need for it. Unlike with Google Maps, Apple doesn't have its own video streaming app to offer, nor does it intend to introduce one. Instead, Google has announced it will be developing its own YouTube iOS app, which will be available for download through Apple's App Store. With its own app, the search giant has promised to provide regular updates and improvements, unlike Apple, who showed the app very little love through the years. It will be interesting to see how this battle between Apple and Google plays out once iOS6 and the heavily rumoured iPhone 5 hits shelves later this year. Will Apple's separation from Google boost its dominance within the smartphone market even further, or will it be its downfall, setting the stage for an impressive comeback from Google and Android?

Hackable console reaches $7.7m in final day of crowdfunding campaign
Ouya has confirmed that its Kickstarter-funded Android console will offer four-player support.
The system's creators said it had made the decision to make the platform compatable with four controllers due to feedback from contributors.
The $99 console, currently in its last day on Kickstarter, has garnered more than $7.7m in its record breaking crowdfunding campaign, smashing its $950k target with 15 hours still left to go.
The platform has received backing from developers including Namco Bandai, Square Enix, U4ia and Robotoki in recent weeks as its creators look to compete with the likes of Apple, Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo.

Despite its significant user base within enterprises, BlackBerry devices have managed to stay off the radar for malware writers. That may be ending, as four new Zeus-in-the-mobile (Zitmo) samples targeting BlackBerry users in Germany, Spain, and Italy have been found. Zitmo, which hit Android devices back in July 2011, refers to a version of the Zeus malware that specifically targets mobile devices. Denis Maslennikov, a security researcher at Kaspersky Lab, also identified a new Zitmo variant for Android using the same command and control (C&C) numbers as the BlackBerry versions. While previous Android variants have been primitive, the latest .apk dropper, which shows up as an app 'Zertifikat,' looks 'more similar to "classic" Zitmo,' he said. When executed, it displays a message in German that the installation was successful, along with an activation code. The Android sample also included a self-issued certificate that indicates it was developed less than a month ago."

Back when Apple's third-gen slate was originally unveiled to the world, the company very quietly slashed down the prices of its first and second generation refurbed iPads. Now, some five months after itstriumphant launch in the US of A and other countries, Cupertino's started selling the pixel-packed newiPad for 50 bucks less than the original price -- that's if, of course, you don't mind a refurbished unit. Still, as we've said before, Apple includes a one-year warranty with each iPad sold via its "Certified Refurbished" online store, which is considerably better than any Craigslist deal you might find out there. Currently, stock appears to be quite loaded, but you never know how long that's going to last. In other words, you may want to get 'em while they're hot.

In preparation for the launch of Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8, Microsoft is planning to rebrand its Windows Phone Marketplace app and content store.
The new storefront will be called Windows Phone Store, and is thought to be a move to bring Windows Phone in line with Windows 8, which will use the Windows 8 Store.
While it seems odd that the company isn't going to use a unified storefront a la the App Store and Google Play for Android, Microsoft hasn't yet confirmed the rebrand, so perhaps there are more details to come.

It's a Galaxy Note 2 rumour bonanza!
Let's break these rumours down.
1. The Galaxy Note 2 will house a flexible AMOLED display. Samsung has been working on flexible displays for a while now, however, just because the screen will be flexible it doesn’t mean the phone will be bendy.
It's more likely that the screen would be placed inside the device at a slight curve to offer better viewing angles. Although, the device may have a slight curve similar to that of the Google Nexus S.
2. While the original Galaxy Note had a 5.3-inch screen, it has been suggested that it's successor will be even larger, at 5.5 inches. Truly straddling the ground between phones and tablets, it will take a brave person to choose the Note for their daily-use handset.
3. Those hoping that the Note 2 will be the most up-to-date in the world may well be disappointed. Various sources have reported that the "phablet" (bleurgh) will not come with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, rather 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Sony’s latest handset, the Xperia GX, has debuted in Japan with mobile carrier NTT DoCoMo.
The Xperia GX comes with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, features a 4.6-inch 720p Mobile Bravia display, and comes with a dual core 1.5GHz processor.
Featuring a 13 megapixel rear camera and LED flash, the GX is capable of recording full HD video in 1080p.
At the moment there is no official news on whether the phone will remain a Japan-only exclusive. But with European trade show IFA only a few weeks away, Sony is rumoured to be announcing details of a US and European launch at the event.

As the iPhone 5 rumour mill continues to churn, the latest word from China is that the sixth-generation device will be trimming the fat.
The news was first reported by Chinese newspaper Apple Daily, which cited an "in-person report" as the source of the information, who claimed the latest device will measure just 7.6mm in depth.
Interestingly, the reduction still wound not qualify the latest iPhone as the slimmest smartphone on the market, but it would shave an impressive 1.7mm off the body of the previous iPhone 4S, which measured in at 9.3mm.
Whilst there was no mention in the Chinese leak as to how Apple plans to slim down its device, earlier rumours have hinted at the iPhone's use of a super-thin screen, thanks to in-cell technology.
It's becoming increasingly difficult to keep up with all of the iPhone rumours flowing out of China as we edge ever closer to September and the various dates heavily tipped to host the device's release.
Earlier this week, a selection of code found within the latest beta release of iOS6 seemed to confirm the iPhone's rumoured larger screen, allowing users to scale its resolution to an increased 640x1136.
If correct, the resolution would indicate that the iPhone 5 will incorporate a four-inch screen, closing the gap between similar devices currently on the market, such as Samsung's Galaxy S3, which boasts a 4.8 inch screen.
Whilst the anticipated screen would still be surpassed by other devices, if its rumoured 7.6mm body comes to fruition, the iPhone 5 would be slimmer by at least one millimetre.

More than 60,000 backers pledge support for new platform
Hackable console Ouya has smashed Kickstarter records by closing at an impressive $8.5million.
The Android-based platform garnered a total of 63,416 backers throughout its crowdfunding campaign, with more than 45,000 people pledging $99 or more to get the console before it hits retail.
Launched on July 10th, Ouya quickly surpassed more than $1m within hours of starting.
Just three days after starting the console then garnered more than $4m in contributions, going on to double that amount over the course of the next month.
Whilst there has been some controversy over how Ouya would be funded, the platform has been backed by a number of publishers and developers of late including U4ia, Square Enix and Robotoki, whilst it is currently in talks with Namco Bandai to bring its flagship franchises to the system.

"Some time ago, Google admitted that the biggest threat was not other search engines but services like Siri. However, Google just bridged that gap with Google Voice Search, already available in Jelly Bean, but also available via downloadable app. Google also submitted this app to the iOS App Store and is currently waiting approval. However, Slashdotters are no doubt recalling to mind the 'Google Voice' fiasco, in which Apple refused to allow it to appear, saying that it replaces a native function. It wasn't until Apple was brought before Congress to answer questions on how it approves or rejects apps that Google Voice was brought in."

According to a leaked screengrab hosted up at MacRumors, Apple retail shops now have the authority to price match carrier and rival retail discounts on iPhone. Specifically, the note informs employees that prices from Best Buy, "carriers," Radio Shack and Target can be matched, with $49.01 seeming to be the savings across the board. Curiously, places like Wirefly, Amazon, Negri Electronics and even Walmart aren't mentioned, so we wouldn't recommend trying to work the price down based on ads seen from any of those. The note also mentions the iPhone 4 and 4S exclusively, and we're fairly sure this sort of goodwill won't ever been applied to iPad, Mac hardware or pretty much any other Apple kit. Of course, crazier things have happened. We've reached out to Apple for comment, and will update this article should it choose to reply.

Over-the-air firmware updates are mainstays for most smartphone platforms, but custom ROM buildershave rarely had such a luxury, even with Android. The OTA Update Center wants to shoulder that noble burden. Along with simply hosting the updates to prevent outrageous bandwidth bills, the Center enables everything an Android ROM creator might need, such as update checks, on-device firmware flashing and wiping either a cache or all user data for the more dramatic upgrades. In practice, the real perk is the cost: it's free to use, so everyone from hobbyists to seasoned teams can take advantage. While the list of those either using or planning to use the OTAUC isn't public, we're hoping it leads to a few moreexperimental builds of CyanogenMod and other ROMs that can now get the same tender loving care as the official code.

Activision celebrates Pitfall's 30th anniversary with a new iOS adventure for Pitfall Harry. Don't expect the same side-scrolling, campfire-jumping treasure hunt, however, as Pitfall! has been updated for the 2012 App Store market by Activision's mobile studio, now known as The Blast Furnace.
That updating means it's an auto-runner with an in-game store, of course. That's ... not really Pitfall at all, so much as a new game with a jungle setting.
In fact, it resembles nothing more than Temple Run with more variety in camera angles. It distinguishes itself with a low-poly look that we're going to guess is a tribute to the low-res pixels of the original. Luckily, it looks way better in motion than in screenshots. That's lucky because ... look at the screenshots.

Search giant's voice search heading for iPhone and iPad.
Google is challenging Siri on its own turf by taking its Voice Search app to iPhone and iPads
The app will allow users to ask questions, before having relevant results returned to them and read out where possible.
The audio response element of Google Voice Search will provide key details of each search result read out by an automated voice to the user.
Already available on Android, Google’s Voice Search app is being prepped for an imminent release in the Apple App Store.
If Google can get their voice search working for iPad before Apple can, it'll be a high black eye for the Cupertino company.

Translation: a quarter of the US population.
eMarketer says 82 million US-based mobile users will access their social media accounts via phones at least once each month in 2012.
Of that figure, 95.5 per cent will log on with their smartphones, making them twice more likely than a feature phone user.
82 million accounts for a quarter of the US population, but the number is set to spike to almost half of all Americans within two years.
Meanwhile, Facebook will dominate with 70m accessing the network from their phones each month this year.
That's 85.4 per cent of total mobile social networkers, rising to 87.4 per cent by 2014 – equivalent to four in ten mobile users and two-thirds of smartphone users.

Opinions say iOS is easy to use, Android offers flexibility, BlackBerry is secure, but WinPho is unknown.
Android and iOS continue to power the best-selling phones on the market, but Strategy Analytics has looked at what consumers actually think of the OSs on the market.
iOS users choose the platform based on the user-friendly and intuitive experience on offer, with little need to customise their device.
In contrast, Android is regarded as more complex which is a caveat of being an open operating system, giving users more wriggle room to personalise their device.
BlackBerry is considered a secure and reliable choice for businesses, but consumers reckon the tech is outdated and unfriendly, while they're unsure of what to make of the Windows Phone OS.
Taryn Tulay, report author, Strategy Analytics, said: "The size of the associated content and app ecosystem, and the perceived quality of the content within it are key factors in determining how consumers perceive different mobile operating systems and how strongly attached they are to their OS of choice.

US survey suggests that even Apple fans think the idea is "pointless".
The one thing that has been missing in all the speculation about the seven inch iPad mini is this important question: does anyone actually want it?
With the success of the Kindle Fire and Nexus 7 it would seem to make sense, but a new study has found that a large number of people really aren't that bothered about the iPad's little brother.
According to a survey of 1,873 Americans conducted by CouponCodes4u (76 per cent of which already owned an Apple product of some type), 78 per cent said they would skip purchasing an iPad Mini in order to purchase a new iPhone, despite 77 per cent of those indicating that they already owned an iPhone.
Furthermore, nearly half of respondents who said they would skip the iPad mini said they didn't think very highly of the idea, with 46 per cent saying the device was “pointlessâ€.
The timing simply may not be right for a seven inch iPad, not if it's coming at the same time as the new iPhone. Given the rabid nature of Apple fans, and the not insignificant outlay involved in obtaining one of the company's new toys, consumers are going to have to choose between the baby pad and the new smartphone. Is it any wonder that the phone wins?

Documents filed yesterday reveal details about how many smartphone units Apple and Samsung have sold in the US between 2010 and 2012.
Samsung angered Apple last week by leaking patent details to the press, but now Apple can don a massive smug face as the sales figures reveal that the US company’s iPhone sales dwarfed Samsung’s smartphone sales.
From June 2010 until June this year, Samsung sold 21.15 million phones in the US alone. Its earlier flagship phone, the Galaxy S II, sold 4.1 million, the Galaxy Prevail sold 2.25 million, and 1.89 million Epic 4Gs were bought.
1.4 million Galaxy Tabs and Tab 10.1s were also sold.
From the third quarter of 2010 until the second quarter of 2012, Apple sold 60 million iPhones and 32 million iPads.
Although both firms have been trying to hold back as much of their performance data as possible from the public, Judge Lucy Koh has rejected requests for confidentiality.
The data is necessary to the case to work out how much in damages either company could be entitled to.
The court case continues in San Jose today (August 10th).

[Zitt] has a security camera which will send him messages any time it detects motion. However annoying this might seem, we’re sure he has his reasons for needing this much immediate feedback. The real problem comes when he goes to view the feed on his iPhone. His solution is to turn the camera’s notifications off, and use his own script to transcode a clip and shoot off an email.
As you can see above, the end result is a concise email that includes the recently captured clip, as well as links to the live feed. He has been storing the clips on an LG N4B2 Network Storage Server (NAS) and since he’s got root access to the Linux system on the device it was an easy starting point for the new system. After he compiled FFmpeg from source (which handles the transcoding) he started work on the script which backs up the recordings and sends the email messages.
One thing he wants to add is a method to clear out the old backup videos. Having encountered a similar issue ourselves we decided to share our one-liner which solves the problem. Find it after the break.

New submitter jolle sends word that stable builds for CyanogenMod 9 rolled out to their servers last night, supporting a wide range of devices. Downloads here. From their announcement:"[This] release is for the majority of our ICS supported devices, the stragglers will catch up, and we will leave the door open for merging in additional devices from maintainers, external and internal. The team itself, will focus solely on Jelly Bean and maintenance of the CM 7 codebase. Many have wondered why we bothered to finish CM 9 when we are already active in CM 10 development. To that, our answer is: we don't like to leave things incomplete. There is no profit gained from what we do, so the satisfaction of completing a goal is our only reward. This release also serves as a release suitable for the masses, especially those who won't have 100% functioning releases of CM 10 immediately or are averse to anything branded as 'preview', 'alpha', 'beta' or 'nightly.'"

We've seen the rumored next iPhone's minuscule docking port more than once. Any of the cabling that plugs into that port, however, has been non-existent until today. If photos slipped to Nowhereelse.fr are more than just flights of fancy, they show a much narrower and possibly slimmer connector that matches up with the hole we've seen. It's so small that a full-size USB connector dwarfs it by comparison, and there's only eight contact pins per side (or possibly total) versus the 30 overall that we know today. We're not told if there are any special tricks besides the size reduction, though: while the new cable end looks dual-sided, there's no guarantee Apple will have eliminated the right-side-up requirement that afflicts just about every mobile-sized port format we've seen to date. If real, the redesign could lead to one less hassle for charging and syncing. It just wouldn't be much consolation to those who'd been hoping for a switch to a standard like micro-USB -- or, for that matter, to long-time iPhone owners who may have to give up or convert legions of accessories.
Update: since we first posted, the rumor has fleshed out a bit. It's claimed that there are eight pins on both sides, but that they perform different functions and might not let us plug the connector in any which way. Supposedly, the connectors also aren't the final models and reflect the problems the unnamed contractor has had meeting Apple's standards. Don't worry about claims of future iPads leaping to the new connector: if there's really a format switch underway, it's only natural that other devices will follow suit.

Let's just skip the "Is that a bone in your pocket?" joke we're all thinking and get straight to business: Minecraft: Pocket Edition has been updated and now includes skeletons, spiders and best of all, a bow to kill skeletons and spiders with. Skeletons and spiders are cool and atmospheric and everything, but they're even cooler when they can't murder you on account of being riddled with hundreds and hundreds of arrows.
The update also fixes around 20 or so known glitches, including one called "burning world," which sounds rather inconvenient. Currently, only the iOS version of Minecraft has these updates listed, though we wouldn't figure that a similar update for the Android version would be far behind.

The eyes of the technology world are focused on the epic patent struggle between Apple and Samsung — the latest iteration of Apple's frantic legal battle against everything Android. The iPhone maker has also brought suits against Android device manufacturers HTC and Motorola. Apple has faced criticism for its endless lawsuits designed to stunt competition from Google's Android, but a quick look at Android device shipments in the second quarter of 2012 reveals a key number that suggest Apple is right to worry."Spoiler alert: the number the article focuses on is 68 — as in, the 68 percent of the smart phone market in this year's second quarter that consisted of Android phones.

Wi-Fi plus Cellular' helps out those apps struggling with wi-fi
We've all experienced problems with patchy wi-fi, and the new Wi-Fi plus Cellular setting on iOS 6 beta 4 appears to allow apps to fall back on the iPhone's mobile data connection when having difficulties moving data via the Wi-Fi connection.
Underneath the main button is a sub menu that allows users to turn mobile connections on or off for a number of tasks, basically giving users the option to use wi-fi only for data hungry apps like iTunes.
Keep in mind that this is only in the beta release, restricted to developers, so the settings could change before the full release or indeed be removed altogether.
Last week it was revealed that the latest beta release of iOS 6 does away with the native YouTube app.

Polytron’s Phil Fish has revealed that Zynga sought out the indie studio with hopes of porting their XBLA platformer Fez to mobile devices.
GI.biz tracked down a series of tweets from the polarizing developer that explained the exchange.
"Zynga approached us to port Fez to mobile. We politely refused. So, look forward to Zynga's Fex any day now, i guess!" read a post on Polytron’s twitter account.
"It actually happened," Fish claimed when questioned whether there was any truth behind the statement.
If the claims are valid it may indicate that the social games publisher has been looking to expand outside of the casual gaming arena.
Zynga has yet to respond regarding the matter.

Electronic Arts, of course, is a video games publisher by trade, but it has seen increasing success with mobile and continues to hint it will move on from its console-based heritage.
In June, the firm said it will make freemium mobile games the norm, and a month later claimed becoming a digital-only publisher is inevitable.
Now, EA is in talks with Microsoft to launch games for the Windows Phone 8 platform as part of its ongoing mobile.
Speaking to Bloomberg, COO Peter Moore, said: "We’re working very closely with Microsoft to understand what their views on gaming navigation are.
"Anything that allows more platforms to be adopted quickly that have a gaming element is good for Electronic Arts."

Appiteks founder follows up his claims of cracking the code to iOS success.
Just last week, Appiteks CEO and founder Chris Luck declared that he had "cracked the code" to achieve success on iOS ahead of his company's debut mobile game launch next month.
At the time he threatened to destroy Angry Birds, and Luck's now back to say his startup will introduce new interactive concepts that the app market has yet to experience.
Luck, said: "A lot of the games that are out there right now are just ok, but I believe that as a developer of game apps, you have a responsibility to provide the general public with more than just ok games.
"We know how to fix that problem and we’re putting all of our time and efforts into introducing the entire industry to things that they’ve never seen before.
"We’re ready to take this industry by storm and I guarantee that we will, now that we’re entering the gaming industry with new, exciting, and interactive concepts."

Nearly 50 per cent of respondents favour Qwerty over the likes of touchscreens and number keypads.
There are still a lot of people out there who prefer a Qwerty keyboard to touchscreen.
A poll by the official Nokia blog Conversations by Nokia has revealed that more than 48 per cent of its readers prefer Qwerty over alternatives liketouch screens and voice command.
The results are even more revealing when broken down by country.
While European countries like Sweden, the UK, Finland and Germany were representative of the poll as a whole, voting overwhelmingly for Qwerty, the US preferred the touchscreen, with 47 per cent of the votes.
However, for the most part, Qwerty is king, with one person saying "I definitely prefer the QWERTY keyboard, by a country mile. You can’t beat it for accuracy or response."

We may well have seen the next iPhone's back shell, front panel, SIM tray and even its cabling. Why not round it out with what might be the motherboard? A WeiPhone forum goer who slipped out the iPhone 4S' board last year is back with the 2012 update's potential new heart. While the tipster hasn't been courteous enough to do a side-by-side with the older component, repair shop iDeviceGuys notes to 9to5 Mac that the newer part isn't just a carbon copy; that smaller SIM slot (what you see in the middle) is one of the bigger giveaways. The real treat may be the extra wireless antenna connections. They aren't any surefire signs of 4G, but the antenna links suggest Apple isn't content with what the iPhone 4S has to offer. We're mostly left wondering about what's under that shielding -- it's a mystery as to whether or not the next iPhone's processor speed bump is a mountain or a molehill. Barring one more peek, we could get the full scoop next month.http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/12/n...sibly-spotted/

Want to look stupid and attract thieves at the same time? The solution to your problem is here!
Just yesterday I was talking with some fellow mobile people about the abundance of pointless phone peripherals.
While wittering on, I joked about a completely useless cutesy mobile accessory that makes it look like your mobile has a tail. It wasn't a particularly funny or clever joke and we moved on. But now….
The gates of hell have opened and unleashed the absurd monstrosity pictured above: the Faux Tail.
While other sites are exclaiming "ZOMG cute overload!" I'm taking a stand against this stupidity. Why would you want to jam some fur and fabric into your $300 device?
Furthermore, why would you pay for it? It's one thing if Disney/Pixar/Whoever distribute tat like this with Happy Meals to promote their latest film for kids, but Faux Tails cost $10.

3D sketch of an 'Apple-made' nut was added to Reddit before the blogosphere exploded.
Graphics firm Day4 started a rumour last week, suggesting that Apple was adding its own screws to the iPhone 5 to make it particularly difficult to unlock the device when users want to get it repaired, modified etc.
The hoax was launched on the basis that people will read something and instantly believe or dismiss it regardless of the source, as the tech world continues to become a place of speculation, whispers and unnamed tip offs surrounding new products.
In this instance, the Day4 team selected social sharing site Reddit to anonymously upload a 3D image (of their own design) depicting an impractical screw with the text: "A friend took a photo a while ago at that fruit company, they are obviously even creating their own screws."
Under 12 hours later and Cult of Mac had reported on the 'leak', while more reports followed, along with tweets from outraged fans.
Worryingly, Day4 estimates that 90 per cent of people believed the screw rumour was true, despite the fact Apple hasn't released any information to support the existence of an iPhone 5 at all.

Details of survey conducted by Apple are revealed in Samsung dispute.
A new internal document has appeared thanks to the Apple vs Samsung case, and this time it's a survey Apple conducted on why consumers considering an iPhone went to Android instead.
The results show that it has nothing to do with the OS or customer support, but 48 per cent went with Android simply because they wanted to stay with their current provider.
Trusting the Google brand came in at 36 per cent, while 30 per cent wanted a larger screen than the iPhone offered.
The survey itself was conducted just before the iPhone arrived on Verizon in January 2011.
The Verge reports: "With the survey indicating that 25 percent of overall Android buyers at the time had considered an iPhone, the numbers gives us a real look at just how much the iPhone's AT&T exclusivity may have hurt it while Android — and Verizon's Droid brand — surged in the US."

New RIM CEO Thorsten Heins has said in an interview with Bloomberg that BB10 can be licensed.
Of course, "can" and "will" are very different things, and the comment is no guarantee that anything will happen but the change in attitude is marked.
Thorsten said the company is looking at how BlackBerry 10 could be used by other companies, comparing it to BB10's underlying QNX software, which is already licensed across the automotive sector.
Of course, BB10 can be licensed - anything can; but whether it will be or not is another thing.
However, since Thorsten's arrival, RIM has been making some big changes, so it isn't beyond the realms of possibility that they would consider licensing BlackBerry.

One reason for Nokia's surprisingly strong share price rebound over the past two weeks is the success of its new Asha feature phones in Asia. According to our sources in Delhi, the Asha 305 sold out in several stores soon after its debut even before the marketing campaign kicked in. Is it a coincidence that major Asian newspapers like The Philippine Star and Singapore's The Sun Daily describe Nokia's new Asha models as 'smartphones'? No. Nokia has done its very best to dress up its cheap new feature phones as something far more aspirational — to the extent that devices like Asha 305 are now widely depicted as smartphones across Asia and Africa. This is a critically important maneuver.."Of course, maybe they are smartphones; the Asha appears to be speced better than the HTC Dream (1Ghz processor, albeit with only 128M of RAM), and they've added a lot of new features to Series40. But then it's still Series40 with JavaME.

That and more revealed in InMobi's UK Mobile Media Consumption Report for Q2 2012.
The average Brit spends an average of 2.5 hours a day using their mobile device, according to mobile ad network InMobi, and the attachment is so strong for 48 per cent that mobile ads are influencing their shopping decisions.
That's on par with PC which also drives 48 per cent of spends, and just behind TV ads which accounts for 55 per cent.
71 per cent of non m-commerce users are set to adopt the tech in the next 12 months, while one-fifth willing to spend more than £20 through mobile purchases.
The figure spikes to 26 per cent for early users of the tech, with results showing they're willing to splash out £50 via their phones and tablets.

Sony expands the certified devices for PlayStation Mobile. UPDATE: added comments from Wikipad
[h=3]Sony[/h]
At its Gamescom 2012 press conference, Sony offered more details on the PlayStation Mobile platform. PlayStation Mobile ties your PlayStation-Certified devices together via your PlayStation Network ID, offering a cross-platform pick-up-and-play experience. The entire service is supported by the PlayStation Store and recognizable titles shown in the demo reel included Lemmings and Super Crate Box.
Sony has announced that two more hardware partners will be brining PlayStation-Certified devices to life: Asus and Wikipad. No specific hardware devices were announced from either company.
Update: Wikipad chief executive James Bower has now commented, "Wikipad is the first true video game tablet built with an attachable gamepad controller that enables a mobile console experience. As we head into our upcoming launch we are partnering with the industry's leading players. PlayStation's commitment to delivering innovative entertainment experiences that captivate gamers is unparalleled and we are thrilled to partner with them."

If you're the media-hungry type sold on Sony's first smartphone in the post-Ericsson era but felt the standard black or white color choices didn't quite fit your style, how about something in between? Sony's outed a new color for its Xperia S, "Dark Silver" -- although we'd say it's closer to grey than the precious metal moniker suggests. There are no changes to anything but the plastic here, so you'll still be getting the same Ice Cream Sandwich device with an impressive display. If you're planning an upgrade soon and the Dark Silver edition is floating your boat, we're sorry to say availability info is absent from Sony's reveal, but we would expect the option to find its way to retailers before too long.

38-year-old Playmobil has exclusively partnered with Gameloft to support its mobile launch, and the publisher is currently developing Playmobile Pirates.
It's not the first time Gameloft has partnered with a toy maker, recently teaming Hasbro to bring My Little Pony and Littlest Pet Shop to mobile.
The design will replicate the original Playmobile products, as users will need to build a pirate base of operations and recruit crew members by completing mini-games and challenges.
Christian Buchner, project manager of new media, Playmobil, said: "By featuring our world-famous pirates' toys in an innovative and user-friendly digital game, Gameloft supports us in bringing fans a new, totally immersive gaming experience."
Gonzague de Vallois, VP of publishing, Gameloft, said: "We've put a lot of effort into creating a gaming experience that remains faithful to the fascinating Playmobil universe, from the famous pirate ship to the brand's unique characters."

Microsoft scramble to fix problem preventing users from downloading apps to handsets.
Microsoft has stopped the publication of new apps for Windows Phones following an issue with digital security certificates.
At the moment it seems only affect users who have updated their handsets to Windows Phone 7.5 - those who have purchased their phone with 7.5 pre-installed are fine.
Mazhar Mohammed, director of program management at Microsoft wrote: "We know what's causing the issue and are already planning to roll out a fix. Until that's finished, we're going to temporarily stop publishing new apps in Marketplace."
Microsoft is currently in the process of rebranding the Windows Phone Marketplace.

Samsung’s top designer Jeeyuen Wang has denied copying iOS icons, but admits to looking at products from other companies, including Apple.
Apple has accused Samsung of copying the design of its iOS home screen, icons, and other visual features. Wang insists that looking at products from other companies is all part of the design process.
The designer said that hundreds of people across the globe had worked together on the designs of Samsung phones. She went on to claim that she only had about two hours of sleep a night during the design process, which left her physically drained and unable to feed her newborn child. What that has to do with a copyright patent, I don’t know.
Apple singled out the sunflower icon that appears on iOS, comparing it to the photo app icon seen on Samsung headsets. Wang insists that this image was inspired by a wallpaper image and not Apple’s sunflower.
"At the time, there was a wallpaper that was in the image of flowers for an AMOLED LCDs and everyone in our team kind of liked the image. We had come to a conclusion that we would adopt this image for the icon," said Wang.
The court case between the two tech giants is set to continue throughout the week, closing arguments are set for next Tuesday (August 21st)

Samsung’s quarterly phone shipments increased by 29.5 per cent year-on-year, driven by record sales of Galaxy smartphones.
According to figures from Gartner, smartphones now account for just over half of Samsung’s total mobile device sales with 25.6 million units sold. Demand for the Samsung Galaxy S3 exceeded even Samsung’s own expectations and was only held back by product shortages.
Meanwhile, sales of the Apple iPhone declined by 12.6 per cent since the last quarter although year-on-year sales were still up by 47.4 per cent. Gartner predicts that sales could continue to be slow for Apple in the third quarter, depending on the release date of the iPhone 5.
“Samsung and Apple continued to dominate the smartphone market, together taking about half the market share, and widening the gap to other manufacturers. No other smartphone vendors had share close to 10 percent," said Gartner principal research analyst, Anshul Gupta.
"In the race to be top smartphone manufacturer in 2012, Samsung has consistently increased its lead over Apple, and its open OS market share increased to one-and-a-half times that of Apple in the second quarter of 2012.â€

Storefront to offer free-to-play game support
EA’s digital distribution platform Origin is coming to Mac, Facebook, Android and Smart TV.
Revealing the news at Gamescom, the publishing giant said the service will also add support for free-to-play titles.
Other additions include exclusive digital content and a new dashboard.
The move to more platforms is likely an effort to expand its customer base and compete with its rival Steam, which is already available on PC, Mac, iOS and Android, with Linux support also currently underway.
Origin currently has more than 21 million users, whilst Steam has over 40 million.

Two BB10 handsets will be released in early 2013; one touchscreen and one Qwerty.
RIM has started delivering nearly complete versions of its new devices to US carriers, and the word is that they are quite impressive.
According to an executive with a carrier who has seen presentations of the manufacturer's new BlackBerry 10 devices, they are a marked improvement from the current models and makes BlackBerry more competitive with Android.
RIM CEO Thorsten Heins had briefing with the WSJ in which he said there will eventually be six BB10 handsets, evenly divided between units with a physical Qwerty keyboard and units without.
Heins said two units will launch early in 2013; one a touchscreen and the other a traditional BlackBerry Qwerty device.
One additional titbit Heins gave away, was that the new BB10 smartphones will have replaceable batteries so that power users can replace dead cells with fresh ones.

We're starting to see a theme develop here. Now that it's Samsung's turn to present its case in the San Jose, California patent trial that regularly has the tech media abuzz, the company is taking an interesting approach. Rather than start out by arguing that its various Android smartphones and tablets do not copy Apple's designs or infringe on its patents, Samsung is arguing that Apple's IP is invalid to begin with. On Monday, Samsung argued that Apple's pinch-to-zoom patent was stolen from Mitsubishi's old Diamond Touch and on Tuesday evening, Samsung made a similar argument regarding the design of Apple's iPad. Samsung on Tuesday presented the jury with videotaped testimony from Roger Fidler, head of the digital publishing program at the University of Missouri. In his testimony, Fidler stated that he began work on a tablet design in 1981. 'Apple personnel were exposed to my tablet ideas and prototypes,' he testified, adding that Apple staff saw his designs in the mid-1990s

John Gruber at Daring Fireball has a thoughtful piece about the design of Apple's smaller iPad, which the company is expected to announce on September 12. Simply shrinking the current iPad's dimensions to a new form factor is unlikely, he says, and the bezel surrounding the display is more likely to be a cross between an iPad and an iPhone. He also discusses evidence of Apple's PR team getting the rumor mill going immediately after the announcement of Google's Nexus 7, and how Apple has probably bet on having a thinner and lighter tablet than Google, rather than worrying about a better display. Quoting:"Apple product designs are true to themselves. Each thing has proportions suited to its own nature. Consider how the iPad doesn’t look like a blown up iPhone. They share a few similar design elements — a family resemblance, if you will — but the proportions are different. The iPad has a thick bezel surrounding all four sides of the display; the iPhone does not. Why? Because you need a place to rest your thumbs while holding an iPad. ... Should not the iPad Mini fall somewhere in between? Not as close to the aspect ratio of its display as the iPad-as-we-know-it, but also not as far away from its display aspect ratio as the iPhone. You might need more thumb-rest room on the sides than you do on the iPhone, but not nearly as much as you do on the full-size iPad. If that assumption is right, the proportions of a 7.85-inch 4:3-aspect-ratio display iPad Mini are likely not the same as the proportions of the 9.7-inch 4:3-aspect-ratio display iPad."

The handheld video games market is being killed off by the smartphone sector, metrics firm Flurry Analytics believes.
It claims that in 2009 the iOS and Android games software market accounted for 19 per cent of the total $2.7bn handheld and mobile games market in the US. In 2001 it claimed a 58 per cent share of the $3.3bn market.
"It's really sort the biggest content revolution that we've ever seen,†Flurry’s EMEA MD Richard Firminger told a GDC Europe audience, as reported by Gamasutra. “It's exciting and it shows that indies can kill a very, very established market."
The claims come after Sony wowed Gamescom last night with a presentation packed with original ideas that focused very heavily on the struggling Vita handheld.
However, all the creativity in the world may still fall short of what’s required to even begin challenging the iPhones and Androids of this world.
Crucially, both Vita and 3DS fall short of smartphone gaming in three key areas.
Firstly, portability: A smartphone user nearly always has their phone to hand. It’s in their pocket or unobtrusively sitting in their handbag. It’s there, it’s small, it’s always in use and its convenient. Carrying a second, larger dedicated gaming device is always a choice and not a default.
Secondly, accessibility: Smartphones are arguably the most user friendly devices on the market. Give a smartphone to a child and they can use it, as if by instinct. Give them a joypad and you get a very different reaction.
Thirdly, and most crucially, content: Whether you’re accessing the internet, reading your emails or browsing the App Store, smartphones are easy and they’re fast. Furthermore, the content is either free or comparatively very cheap. Sony and Nintendo can focus on “snack sized†game development all they like – this will never be replicated on systems designed around physical storage cards and triple-A software catalogues.

We just received an invite from Nokia and Microsoft to attend a Windows Phone-centric event on September 5th. This is the same day as Nokia World's opener, and we have a feeling this isn't a coincidence. Rumors have been rampant that the Finnish company would choose this particular week to announce its lineup of Windows Phone 8 devices, and we're hoping this is indeed the case. Granted, the invite comes with a large reference to Nokia Maps, so it's certainly possible the navigation service could be a primary focus of the event, but we're hedging our bets on new handsets. Either way, we'll be there to share the excitement with you.

“Full touch†devices will have a 768 x 1280-pixel screen, while Qwerty flavour is 720 x 720.
After yesterday's news that RIM will release two phones in early 2013 (one touch, one Qwerty), comes more details about those phones.
The first BlackBerry 10 “full touch†device will come with a 768 x 1280 resolution screen, while their Qwerty handset will be 720 x 720 pixels.
And that seems to be the way things are going to be from hereon in. There will be two types of BlackBerries:
- Full touch devices: 720 x 1280 (16:9)
- Keyboard devices: 720 x 720 (1:1)
This standardisation is useful news for developers, as it will allow them to plan well ahead of time, safe in the knowledge that products will display on future devices.

The stats come from the ever-industrious market watcher Tomi Ahonen, who crunches the sales data from the four big analyst houses (Gartner, IDC, Strategy Analytics and Canalys) to get the total numbers for this quarter.
Then he uses a combo of OEM figures, other public sources and internal estimates to conjure the remaining data.
Ahonen's latest Q2 numbers show increased dominance for Samsung in the OEM space and Android in the OS market.
He reckons overall smartphone sales hit 153 million units for Q2, which equates to 695 million sales for the year. That's 43 per cent up on 2012.
Samung sold 5.4m in the quarter to get 32.9 per cent, and lead Apple (with 17 per cent) and Nokia (6.7 per cent). What a turnaround. Ahonen notes how 18 months ago Nokia was more than twice the size of Apple which was twice as big as Samsung.

Alan Wlasuk, of 403 Web Security, provides some top tips. Do the opposite if you want to avoid being ripped off.
When I was growing up, my father used to say: “Beauty is only skin deep, but dumb goes clear to the bone.†Feel free to draw your own conclusions.
As we collectively wander the world with our smartphones glued to our lives, most of us don’t realise how fragile the relationship really is with this device.
Think about it — you have your diary, wallet, phone, social support system and best friend all wrapped up in one piece of hardware.
One slip, and it’s all toast.
Your diary is hidden under the mattress; your wallet is securely tucked in your jeans; and your best friend knows your girlfriend is way off limits. Yet your smartphone gets left on the counter at Starbucks and you continue to download apps written in a cyber crime-lab in the Ukraine.
Bone-deep dumb†is well within the reach of us all.
Smartphone security disasters come in many forms. Given my security background and my circle of friends and relatives, I think I may have seen every smartphone misjudgment known to mankind.
For your entertainment, education, and help in avoiding a big ‘Hack me, please’ sign on your back, I’ve listed my top five smartphone mistakes below:
1. Download apps from unverified sources
Whether you know it or not, every app on your smartphone is a potential security risk. A well-meaning app treats you fair, while a malicious app might be recording your keystrokes, accessing your contact list, and signing you up for expensive services you never wanted. Every app is a potential risk, but the ones you download from unauthorised sources are far riskier. Either use authorised Apple, Google, and Microsoft app stores or risk an unexpected friend sharing your smartphone with you.
2. Jailbreak your smartphone
There seems to be some appeal to be the guy who holds up his jailbroken smartphone (ie modified to bypass the original security features). But there’s a reason they don’t let lawn tractors into hotel lobbies, just as there’s a reason to trust Apple, Google, and Microsoft. They have built smartphone operating systems that protect us from security risks. Everyone who thinks they’re smarter than the guys at Google should mount their lawn tractors for the next race.
3. Go smartphone commando — no passcode
Imagine the embarrassment of strangers wandering through your smartphone. This would be so easy to arrange; just lose your phone without a passcode set. Emails and photos would be hit first, then social apps, and finally any app that could be used for fun and profit. The guitar you just unexpectedly bought for an unknown 16-year-old through your eBay account might be the least of your problems. Explaining your new Facebook status (your upcoming marriage to the Russian cross-dresser) to Grandma might worse. Fun fact: 62 per cent of smartphone users do not use password protection (Javelin Strategy & Research).
4. Store secrets on your phone
So you’ve added a passcode and you never download an app that doesn’t have a pedigree. Feeling safe, you’re storing all kinds of secret and embarrassing things on your smartphone. But I'm afraid some pasty-looking kid living in his mom’s basement could break your code in about 30 minutes. Maybe keeping those pictures from Las Vegas are not the best idea. Repeat after me: There are no secrets; there are no 100 per cent secure smartphones.
5. Ignore OS updates
When your crazy boyfriend moves out, you change the locks. It’s inexpensive, and your flat-panel TV will be there when you get home from work. Think of the hackers as your crazy ex and Apple (or Google or Microsoft) as handling the new locks. So when the OS makers send out a new update, it almost always means they have fixed a security problem. The more updates you skip, the more likely you are to get hacked. The bill you get for the fake calls to Bolivia (remember that seedy web site you visited?) will cost you more than a new TV.
A final tip from my dad: Never pay for a subway token with a $50 bill.

Smartphones have completely swamped standard mobile phones in the US, and Android is leading the way.
With a US population of 312m, more than half of Americans now own smartphones, and 70 per cent of those are made up of Android and iPhone, according to a report by Chetan Sharma Consulting.
But why are Android sales far outweighing arguably the most iconic smartphone ever, the iPhone?
Some suggest that consumers have been holding out during Q2 for the release of iPhone 5, another reason may be that one of America’s major carriers, T-Mobile, currently doesn’t offer the iPhone to its customers.
This combination may have made way for Android during Q2, but the rest of 2012 will reveal whether Android really is dominating the market, or if Apple is just giving it some time at the front of the pack before it steals Android’s spotlight when the iPhone 5 arrives.

This is a Gemei G9T, a 9.7″ Tablet running Android 4.0. [Carnivore] shows us how to modify it to use inductive charging. The inductive charging hardware is taken from a Palm device (this uses the Touchstone charging hardware seen in several other hacks). It’s easy to interface with the tablet’s electronics, but physically placing the coil and magnets is another story.
The video after the break gives you a full walk-through of the process. He starts by removing the screws and prying the case off of the tablet. From there [Carnivore] shows how to carefully remove the coil, circuit board, shielding, and magnets from a Palm back plate. The magnets are the first to be positioned on the tablet’s back plate. The metal is too thick for them to hold well so he uses a Dremel to grind away just enough material for a strong connection. Unfortunately the metal will shield the magnetic fields the coil needs to work so he cuts a hole in the case the same size as that coil. The area is covered in liquid electrical tape to prevent shorts, and everything is taped in place. Two jumper wires connected from the coil’s circuit board to the 5V charging input are all it takes to finish up the hack.

NaturalMotion has revealed that its free-to-play iOS game CSR Racing grossed in excess of $12m in its first month.
Developed by UK studio Boss Alien, the game sees players competing in a succession of drag races. No steering is required – instead, success is determined by the player’s gear changing accuracy.
As well as skill, progress is best made by upgrading your cars – which can of course be purchased. The game also limits the number of races a player can partake in during any given period. Further goes can be purchased for those unwilling to wait.
The game launched on June 28th.
NaturalMotion’s previous iOS titles include Backbreaker Football and Jenga. It is also the creator of the Euphoria engine which, amongst other games, is the heart of titles such as Grand Theft Auto IV and Red Dead Redemption.

At Google's developer conference, the company announced that it would soon offer the ability to download delta updates in its Play Store, and we're starting to see the promise fulfilled before our very eyes. These delta upgrades, which save time and bandwidth when updating larger apps by only downloading the actual changes (rather than the entire program), were spotted earlier by Android Policeand verified by our staff. While it may seem like a minor feature, you'll likely be happy that you don't have to think twice about updating your graphically-intense games when you're not within range of a hotspot. Head below for a video showing the delta updates in action.

Remember that Google Play gift card support we told you about just this morning? Well now things got real. Literally. The pic above shows one of the shrink-wrapped critters in a $25 denomination. Android Central claims they were sent a few different pictures, showing $10 varieties also -- and as we can see from the box -- they're good for music, movies, books, apps and (mysteriously) "more." So if you're after that hot new game, now's about the time to start dropping hints to your nearest and dearest.

Free app will activate during Monday Night Raw and PPVs to push polls and additional content.
Over the last year, WWE has been pushing connectivity and social media on it's programming harder than almost any other TV show.
It pushes unique hash tags on every televised live show, conducts Twitter polls, ensures everyone on the roster is active on Twitter, has an enormous Facebook following, utilises a YouTube channel and even pushes people towards Shazam whenever a wrestler's entrance music plays.
Furthermore, the company recently invested heavily in video message startup Tout, which it promotes regularly on its website and all TV programming, playing 15 second Touts by fans and talent alike.
Now, WWE has launched an official flagship app for iOS and Android, in the hope that viewers will interact virtually during programming. While WWE has dipped its tow in the app world in the past (mini games, event-specific apps), it has never had a flagship service, but now that's changed.
The official WWE app will provide exclusive video, news and other content, as well as pull in the social media streams for every WWE performer.

Certified devices will only feature 'original content'.
Earlier this week, Sony announced its PlayStation Mobile gaming platform will launch across certified Android devices (HTC, Asus, Wikipad) and the PlayStation Vita.
But while the firm previously said 100 retro PS one games will be available on PlayStation Mobile, the PSV will now be the only device to have that honour – starting August 28th – according to Xperia Blog.
The decision has been made so that the Android devices will only feature 'dedicated and original content'.
It's plausible that Sony also made the decision to make its handheld device a differentiator from the rest of the pack, hoping to pull in some of the die-hard gamers that want to relieve the classic games.

Malicious programs targeting Google's OS triples in Q2 2012.
The number of new malicious programs targeting Android platform has almost trebled between the first and second quarters of the year.
According to figures from Kaspersky, more than 14,900 new malicious programs targeting Android were added to the Kapersky database during Q2.
Out of this number, 49 per cent were 'multi-functional' Trojans, that will collect personal data and download content onto a device without the owner realising.
The other half of the was split between SMS Trojans and those that use backdoors to gain full control of devices.
Yuri Namestnikov, senior Mmalware analyst at Kaspersky Lab, said: "In the near future, we expect not only more malware, but more effective and dangerous malware targeting Android.

Supernatural release Jack Lumber is the first game from the platform – out now.
Activision recently partnered Flurry to support third party mobile games studios, and now rival video games publisher Sega has launched its own independent support initiative.
The Sega Alliance will provide independent developers with marketing, production, and consultation support.
Owlchemy Labs has been the platform's test subject, working with Sega Alliance to launch Jack Lumber – an iOS game about a supernatural lumberjack who goes medieval on the forest after a vicious tree murders his nan.
Chris Olson, VP of digital business at Sega, said: "With Sega Alliance, we're looking forward to sharing that success with talented developers like Owlchemy Labs by introducing new and unique games, such as Jack Lumber, to the market. Now if you'll excuse me, I have some trees to destroy."
Alex Schwartz, chief scientist at Owlchemy Labs, said: "We'll be able to introduce Jack Lumber to a much wider audience than we'd originally hoped thanks to the resources provided by Sega Alliance.

100m low end smartphone users to get a taste of Draw Something and Zynga Poker.
Nokia Asha Touch phones are based around Symbian Series 40 and were designed with aspirational users from emerging markets in mind.
They include the Nokia Asha 311 1GHz touchscreen, dual SIM 305 and the low cost Asha 306.
This cross promo with Zynga should help raise their profile a little. Draw Something and Zynga Poker will be available from Q3 2012 as part of their partnership announced earlier this summer. Both titles will be free to download from Nokia Store
Nokia has similar agreements in place with EA, Gameloft, Rovio and NAMCO BANDAI.
"It's great to expand our offering of Zynga games to deliver more blockbuster titles across our portfolio of mobile devices, giving consumers great choice and tremendous value," said Bryan Biniak, VP & GM, global partnering & application development at Nokia.

'Interactive retailer network' will connect all of the car firm's digital platforms.
Volkswagen has partnered with developer Tribal in the past, working together on an iPhone app that enables users to tailor a car to their liking.
The car giant has now taken its mobile initiative one step further by launching a 'interactive retailer network' with Tribal, which will connect all related products and digital tech into a showroom app.
UK customers will be able to access the new platform on more than 2,000 iPads, which will make their way to showrooms across the country in coming weeks.
Users will also be able to find out the car best suited to their needs, filtering through price, fuel type, performance, tech, space, and more.
Tom Roberts, MD, Tribal, said: "This app integrates technology and retail together on an unprecedented scale. This trailblazing initiative is a logical extension to the digital thread which we created for Volkswagen following our design and build of their website and iPhone app."

$400bn retailer gets put under the spotlight.
Apple boasts the most loyal customers on the mobile market, but its popularity carries across all of its tech divisions, according to the infographic from OnlineMBA.
Steve Jobs opened the first Apple store in 2000, and 12 years later the firm is the most valuable company in the world, worth more than $400 billion.
Apple now has 363 stores worldwide, which have been visited by more than 1bn people, with 85m visiting an Apple store in Q1 2012.
It's even harder to get a job at Apple than it is to study at the prestigious Harvard University, with respective acceptance rates of two and seven per cent.

Motorola has released a tool to allow anyone to unlock the bootloader on their phone/tablet. The only supported device so far is the Photon Q 4G LTE, though three other devices are supported through their developer unlock program. Support for unlocking other devices is supposedly on its way."Motorola leads into the unlocking process with this amusing tidbit: "WARNING: Motorola strongly recommends against unlocking the bootloader and/or modifying or altering a device's software or operating system. Doing so can have unintended, unforeseen, and dangerous consequences, such as rendering the device unusable, violating applicable laws, or causing property damage and/or bodily injury, including death." Careful, folks; unlocking that bootloader might kill you.

We only just learned in earnest that XBMC was coming to Android last month, and yet we're already looking at workable builds. Kermonine96 at the XDA-Developers forum has started offering his own, unofficial nightly versions of the media center front end, both for regularly supported devices with Neon processor code (most often HTC and Samsung devices) as well as Neon-free hardware, like phones and tablets carrying Tegra 2 chips. Needless to say, the alpha-grade code shouldn't be used as the heart of a mobile media center: hardware decoding isn't functional, battery life is low and even a stable picture isn't guaranteed. That said, anyone who's willing to risk a skip-heavy movie or miss out on plugins now doesn't have to receive the XBMC crew's blessing to get a preview of its Android efforts.

If you're a frequent texter, and the iPhone is your weapon of choice, there's a good chance you've been a wee bit concerned since yesterday's report that the device is vulnerable to a certain SMS spoofing attack. Basically, it's possible for a malicious individual to send a message and specify a reply-to number that is not their own, appearing as if they are someone else. We got in touch with an Apple representative and here's what we were told:Apple takes security very seriously. When using iMessage instead of SMS, addresses are verified which protects against these kinds of spoofing attacks. One of the limitations of SMS is that it allows messages to be sent with spoofed addresses to any phone, so we urge customers to be extremely careful if they're directed to an unknown website or address over SMS.
Even if you aren't on an iPhone, we'd like to remind you to be careful when texting. There are numerous services out there that let you send a message that appears to be from anybody you like -- regardless of what model, OS or even carrier the recipient is using. All the more reason to think twice before filing that loan application over SMS.

The Android Open Source Project has typically (and understandably) been a very Nexus-focused affair -- until now that is. Technical Lead for the AOSP, Jean-Baptiste Queru, announced this week that for a "new challenge" he'd like to target new hardware -- and Sony's Xperia S is the lucky benefactor. The choice of hardware is said to be due to it being a powerful, current device with an unlockable bootloader, with Queru noting that Sony has always been kind to the project. There's not a lot in the git project right now, but Queru appears keen to rally support from developers to get the ball rolling. Wondering how this might differ from CyanogenMod's device targets? Where CM might have a focus on stability, Queru believes that AOSP will head in a more experimental "bleeding edge" direction. Sound like something you can get behind? Head on over to the source for more info.

That oft-rumored successor to the Sony Xperia S smartphone, the Xperia SL? Sony's now officially listing the 4.3-inch GSM device as "coming soon" on its website, along with full details and specs. As it turns out, the initial leaks were correct -- the SL is a slight refresh of the S, differentiating itself with an additional duo of color choices (silver and pink), a faster dual-core 1.7GHz Snapdragon S3 CPU and Android Ice Cream Sandwich (up from a 1.5Ghz processor and Gingerbread). Aside from all that, it's the same media-focused phone, loaded with the same 720p display and 12.1-megapixel shooter, that wereviewed in March. We can't say we're overly excited, but you'll find more info from Sony at the source link below if you're interested.

Data by StatCounter suggests Microsoft's platform will be more common than BB by late 2012.
Windows Phone isn't a particularly fast-growing platform, but new figures suggest it is set to overtake BlackBerry in the US by the end of November.
This isn't due to any great step forwards by the Microsoft platform, but more because of BlackBerry's terrifying decline.
The projection is based on extrapolating StatCounter web usage data from the beginning of the year, and would mean there would be more Windows Phones in use in the USA than BlackBerries.
The reality is, this increase is probably going to happen even sooner, considering Windows 8 and new devices are expected for October, while BB10 is delayed until 2013.
With fewer than two per cent of US smartphones being Windows Phones, they'll still be be rare in the US; just not as rare as BlackBerries.

Coin-sized battery is recharged by walking meaning you're never stuck with a dead phone.
Everyone has had the experience of being in the middle of a busy day with a mobile that's almost dead, with no chance of getting it charged.
Deciding which call to answer becomes a huge ordeal, checking the time using your phone is a luxury you can't afford and sending a text is completely out of the question.
But what if you were able to recharge the battery yourself, using just your own movement?
Researchers at Georgia Tech say they have developed a battery that does just that, via a coin-sized lithium-ion battery that slips into the sole of your shoe.
The team put polyvinylidene difluoride film in place of the polyethylene separator that usually acts as a barrier between two electrodes. When the polyvinylidene difluoride film receives some stress, it gets charged due to the compressive energy generated by the user's walking.

As the Samsung/Apple patent trial draws to a close, the US tech giant accuses Samsung of abusing its ‘monopoly power’.
Apple experts claim Samsung abused the power gained by its ownership of wireless patents, and demanded unreasonable royalties from Apple for the use of the patents in Apple’s iPhone, hurting the smartphone’s commercial prospects.
These accusations come as the two sides presented their last pieces of evidence on Friday.
During the firms’ testimony time, Apple attempted to put in a list of 75 witnesses in a 25-hour timeframe. Judge Lucy Koh was not too happy about this and commented that unless Apple’s lawyer was smoking crack, he had to know he wasn’t getting all those people on the stand.
Samsung accuses Apple of infringing on a number of its patents, meanwhile Apple accuses the Korean tech company of copying the design and some features of its iPad and iPhone.
Closing arguments and jury deliberations are set to begin this week.

David Marsh believes talent is being squandered through a lack of creativity at the social gaming giant
It’s sad to see developers at Zynga working on copycat games rather than creating original content, Nimblebit’s David Marsh has said.
Speaking to Mobile Pie's Will Luton in an interview for Develop, the Tiny Tower creator said he was surprised that the social games giant did not often let designers create their own ideas, given the wealth of talent available at the company.
When asked by Luton whether he felt talent had been squandered at the studio, Marsh said that is something he would agree with.
He added the most exciting element of game development should be the creative side and coming up with new ideas, rather than just copying pre-existing concepts.
“The annoying part to me was that I know that there are lots of really talented people at Zynga because I used to work with them and they all went to work at Zynga,†said Marsh.

The Harvard Business Review is running an article that's questioning the very premise of the Apple v Samsung case. From the article: 'It isn't the first time Apple has been involved in a high-stakes "copying" court case. If you go back to the mid-1990s, there was their famous "look and feel" lawsuit against Microsoft. Apple's case there was eerily similar to the one they're running today: "we innovated in creating the graphical user interface; Microsoft copied us; if our competitors simply copy us, it's impossible for us to keep innovating." Apple ended up losing the case. But it's what happened next that's really fascinating. Apple didn't stop innovating at all.'

Researchers have recently discovered a new sophisticated and resilient mobile threat targeting Android phones that is said to have infected about 500,000 devices, mainly in China. Called 'SMSZombie,' the malware is stubborn and hard to remove, but users outside of China have little to worry about with this latest discovery. The prime function of the mobile malware is to exploit a vulnerability in the mobile payment system used by China Mobile, making it of little value to the fraudsters outside of China. The malware takes advantage of a vulnerability in the China Mobile SMS Payment process to generate unauthorized payments to premium service providers, and can also remotely control the infected device. It has been spread via wallpaper apps that sport provocative titles and nude photos, and can only be removed using a lengthy process beyond the skills of a typical android user.

The app devs over at Sky Sports are having a busy year, and after improving their iPad offering for the F1 season, they're back with a "second screen" update for football (soccer) fans. Just in time for the start of the UK Premier League season, the new Football Match Centre adds a content bar alongside your chosen stream showing team and player info, in-depth stats of the match in progress and a hand-pickedTwitter feed for related musings. You might think the devs deserve a break, but sadly there's no time -- next on the agenda is a similar update for the Champions League tournament, then they're bringing the second screen to golf fans before the Ryder Cup starts next month.

Microsoft is getting brickbats from developers unenthused by its forthcoming operating system(s), and the BBC is the latest to join the chorus. When asked about bringing iPlayer to Windows Phone, the corporation's on-demand honcho, Daniel Danker, responded by saying it's not cost-or-time effective for the system -- thanks to a lack of support for HTTP Live Streaming. Mr. Danker confirmed to us that HLS is not the proprietary format it's believed to be, used on a wide variety of devices including Smart TVs and consoles -- but is not included in Redmond's mobile OS.
Live streaming is also impossible thanks to a "bug" in the software that can't secure the session, breaking the corporation's copy protection system which only affects mobile devices. Redmond's known of the problem for some time, and is working on a solution, but has yet to make any official announcement otherwise. He told us that he's optimistic that a solution might arrive, perhaps on October 26th, but until then, the corporation won't even look at developing an app for any Windows-powered handset. After the break we've included the full text of the original email if you'd like to hear it from the source.

Yes indeed, the Ouya is still planned to have OnLive support at launch. Ouyaannounced in late July that OnLive cloud game streaming support would be in the Android-powered, Kickstarter-funded open-source console when it launches early next year. Reps from both companies reconfirmed their commitment to the collaboration this afternoon.
If this sounds a bit familiar, it's because OnLive has – in unspecific terms – said as much already. "All previously announced products and services, including those in the works, will continue and there is no expected interruption of any OnLive services," a statement by the company read last Friday. However, we've seen this question pop up repeatedly since last week, so we wanted to state each company's position on the record one last time. Just for you. Yup, you.

Update also cuts back on battery consumption.
Cloud communications firm Skype has updated its iOS app, which supports iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch, to include photo sharing.
The company has responded to user demand, and is banking on customers to use the feature in favour of MMS.
Photo-sharing doesn't include a size limit either, which will allow the transfer of any shots that veer into high-res territory.
The update also boasts a slicker performance with improved speeds, while the apps are now 'less battery hungry' when the app is on standby, enabling users to send IMs and so on throughout the day without fear of a dead device.

One in four Japanese consumers now own a smartphone, and two thirds of those are Android devices.
The number of people in Japan with smartphones has grown dramatically since the beginning of 2012, with an audience growth of 43 per cent.
Data released by comScore looked at trends in the Japanese mobile industry during the three months ending in June 2012 and surveyed more than 4,000 mobile users.
During this period, more than 24 million people in Japan owned smartphones which, represents 23.5 percent of the entire mobile population. However, despite that surprisingly low percentage, numbers are on the up; smartphone adoption grew by 43 per cent versus the end of 2011.
Android’s share of the smartphone market reached 64.1 per cent, with Apple having 32.3 per cent, and Microsoft a 3.2 per cent of the market.
Among handsets (smartphone and non-smartphone), Sharp is on top, with 22.6 per cent market share.

Massive tablet used to demonstrate toy company's new range of connected playthings.
A giant iPad has appeared in the Westfield London shopping centre to promote toy manufacturer Mattel's Apptivity line of products.
Apptivity toys can be moved across the screen of an iPad to play games, and to demonstrate how it works the company has installed a ginormous tablet in Europe's biggest shopping centre.
One of the games sees children stepping onto the king-sized device and becoming a Hot Wheels Apptiity car by moving around the screen while looking at the immersive screen in front of them.
Mattel’s boys marketing manger Jonathan Kirkley said: “This is just the first element of a highly strategic marketing programme that will bring the Apptivity collection to life across a number of communication channels including TV, digital, social media and viral video.â€

Reincarnated Nokia OS looks to the little green robot to entice users.
Finnish startup Jolla was born last month, comprising ex-Nokia employees that plan to revive the OEM's extinct Intel-based MeeGo OS.
The software was originally set to succeed Symbian, but only made it as far as powering the Nokia N9 before the firm chose to partner with Microsoft for Windows Phone devices.
Of course, Jolla has a steep hill to climb to gain share from the likes of leading Android and iOS, so how can it go about making its way to the top of the mountain?
Simple, it will equip MeeGo to support Android apps and hope that consumers will stray away from the official Google OS, according to Gigaom.
The startup will use OpenMobile's Application Compatibility Layer (ACL) tech to achieve the results, which can make MeeGo a 'vibrant ecosystem' with Android power.

At $623.5 billion, Apple is the most valuable company in the history of the world.
With shares up by 64 per cent this year, Apple's market value has gone through the roof.
Smashing the previous record of $620.6 billion set by Microsoft in 1999, the Cupertino titan is now worth $623.5 billion.
For many years, ExxonMobil was the most valuable company in the world. Apple is now worth 53% more than the New York-based petrol company.
The stock's latest push higher is powered by expectations of unreleased products, particularly the iPhone 5.
UBS advisor Steven Milunovich said: "Apple is building a tech empire. Empires eventually crumble. But Apple seems closer to the middle of building its empire than the end."

Digitimes has reported that the iPad Mini is set to launch in October.
The tech site also revealed that the supply volume of Apple’s 7.85-inch iPad is estimated to reach four million units per month, starting in September.
Prices are likely to be around the $300 mark to try to compete with other 7-inch tablets on the market.
Four million units a month is a quite aggressive for a new product launch, especially given that Microsoft is only building an estimated three million units of Surface tablets for the entire year, implying that Apple is intending to open up a whole new market of iPad buyers.
With the abundance of Android tablets on the market, who will buy a 7.85-inch iPad? Well, the saturation of Android tablets may be the very thing that draws consumers to a more familiar brand.
With so many Android 7-inch tablets, all featuring various operating systems, consumers may find it difficult to understand the differences between them.
Those who want a tablet, but don’t want to splash on a regular iPad may find their perfect device in the form of the iPad Mini.
Apple is set to announce its latest iPhone on September 12th. Likely to be called the iPhone 5, the handset is rumoured to feature a larger screen than previous models and a smaller charger port.

While our thoughts on all things iPhone may be focused elsewhere, an unusual Apple prototype of its fourth phone iteration has caught our attention on eBay. On the back, you can see the same curious logospied on experimental hardware as far back as February 2010 and as 9to5Mac notes, it doesn't pack the screws along the bottom edge, making it ever so slightly different to the final model. The phone (model number N90AP) also runs Apple's software testing framework, Switchboard, which is still happily ticking along on this particular prototype. Bids start at $4,500, or there's a Buy It Now price of $10,000 -- if you must have this obscure slice of Apple history.

Today a rare version of Apples Iphone 4 has appeared via an Ebay Auction, as you can see in the screenshot above it has a strange logo that looks like a bowling ball and the word prototype on the back. The Rare iPhone also runs Apples Switchboard Software, heres what the Ebay Seller says:
Iphone 4 Prototype/Tester unit. This is one of a VERY small amount of Apple prototype devices and never seen on ebay. This iPhone has 32GBs of capacity, and is incredibly unique. It has a unique back that clamps to the body without screws on the bottom (a small phillips screw holds the back, screw placed on the side next to the sim card slot.) ONE OR MORE OF THE CLAMPS ARE BROKEN CAUSING BACK PLATE TO FALL OFF
THIS IPHONE is a functional representation of this design.
This iPHONE is not only unique in it's hardware, but it's running Apple's software testing suite, called SwitchBoard which is used to test the devices functionality. USUALLY THESE PROTOTYPES ARE DISABLED BY APPLE BUT THIS ONE IS FULLY FUNCTIONAL. All functions of the software seems to work. All parts on this iPHONE are original prototype parts, except for the battery, which was removed by Apple, and I replaced it with an OEM iPhone Battery. This iPhone is model N90AP. The iPhone contains many identifying numbers on it which disclose which particular prototype it is, and in the interest of safety I have blurred out all possible identifying numbers. Again, be aware this is a one of a kind item, none like this have been listed on ebay before. It comes with no warranty, and is intended as a collectors item or if you're interested in the hardware or software on it. The back of the device clearly shows that its a prototype model. This iPhone has it's own serial number which shows up as invalid in Apple's system since Apple does not register prototypes.
The seller will sell it on a buy it now for $10,000, heres the link for more info: http://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-Apple-i...#ht_1337wt_984

The UK festival season is in full swing right now, with the likes of Wireless, Global Gathering, and V invoking superstars from around the globe to perform to thousands of merrymakers.
And with such an excited atmosphere, revelers will look to their mobile phones to capture the moment with videos and photos, updating friends on social networks, and regrouping should someone wander off.
Given all of that, mobile network giffgaff has found one in ten festival-goers have lost or wrecked their phones at festivals this year, and when combined with thefts, this results in £130m worth of damages – equivalent to 650,000 phones.
Data also shows around £14m worth of call credit is wasted, while a quarter of people would have to pay out £300 on a lost or damaged device.
However, mobiles were only the third item on the missing list, trailing behind 22 per cent and 19 per cent for lost clothes and friends, respectively.

Marissa Mayer wants to leave BlackBerry behind and get an Apple device for every employee.
BlackBerry is currently the smartphone of choice for employees at Yahoo, however many employees have an iPhone or Android handset as a second phone for personal use.
According to All Things D, new CEO Marissa Mayer (pictured) has declared that iPhones (or potentially Android devices) for everybody is a distinct possibility.
It’ll be expensive (just like her recent statement that there should be free food for staff at Yahoo's larger offices) but it will be popular and keeping all employees on a single platform might help boost productivity.
Regardless of which platform Yahoo decides on, the aim is to improve the bottom line which should make stockholders happy, as well as the manufacturer that gets the contract.

Thirty-six per cent of teenagers are unable to go 10 minutes without checking their phones.
A survey by free messaging app TextPlus, says that 50 per cent of teens couldn't live without their mobile devices for a week.
They would, like, literally die.
Of the 600 respondents aged between 13 and 17, 36 per cent said they aren't able to last 10 minutes without checking their phones.
Among this group, texting is still tops, with 61 per cent saying they couldn't survive without texting - more than any other activity they perform on their phones.
With this apparently essential need to text, it is little wonder that 52 per cent of teenagers said they use their phones regardless of the environment - 37 per cent check their devices on the toilet and 20 per cent do it in church.

Sixty per cent of Windows Phones worldwide are Nokia devices.
A new study shows that Windows Phone is growing, and Nokia is gaining an increasing share of that market.
The study, conducted by Localytics, shows that since January the number of WinPho devices has grown by 312 per cent worldwide and 273 per cent in the US.
Meanwhile, Nokia’s share of the global Windows Phone market has gone from 22 per cent to nearly 60 percent. Equally impressive is the statistic that its US shares has leapt from zero per cent to 32 per cent.
However, while Nokia's star is on the rise, Samsung and HTC's US Windows Phone market share has fallen.

Verizon Wireless bans staff holidays between September 21-30. I wonder why….?
US carrier Verizon Wireless has blacked out holidays for all of its staff from September 21st until September 30th.
Add this to the speculation that the Apple iPhone 5 will arrive on September 21, and the quick-witted among you may be able to spot a pattern.
With the official announcement widely believed to be scheduled for September 12, a release of the new iPhone nine days later falls in line with Apple’s previous history with iPhone launches.
From the first iPhone through to iPhone 4, the gap between official announcement and availability in the States has been between nine and 12 days.
Are you getting the new iPhone and what do you expect from it?

Nikon’s newest camera, the Coolpix S800c, runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread and has Wi-Fi.
What with every smartphone having a built in camera and an array of apps to share photos with, the humble compact camera has somewhat been left behind. With Nikon’s latest offering, it hopes to draw web-savvy photographers back to the camera market.
Nikon has labeled the Coolpix S800c as “the Android-powered camera that loves your social life as much as you doâ€. With Google+, Facebook and Twitter built-in, as well as a number of photo-related apps available, this compact camera really is aimed at social networkers.
The Coolpix S800c features a 3.5-inch 819k-dot touchscreen, a 16MP CMOS sensor, 10x optical 4.5-45mm lens, and 1080p video capture.
"Just like a smartphone or tablet device, the camera has the opportunity to run camera-specific photo and video applications, yet enables the various benefits of shooting with a camera," said Nikon in a statement.
"The S800c provides access to a vast world of applications for games, productivity and personal communication/email, including Nikon's photo storage and sharing site."
Nikon’s Coolpix S800c will be available in black and while from September 27th and will be priced at £379.99.

Call it the end to a brief chapter in the Windows Phone saga. While there had been murmurs that theHTC Arrive was on its way out soon, any doubt has been removed now that the smartphone has vanished from Sprint's website and is likely on the endangered list at retail stores. The QWERTY slider's retirement leaves Sprint without any sort of Windows Phone in its roster, cutting the number of major US carriers backing Microsoft's platform down to three. Before you ask, we honestly don't know if the CDMA provider has a replacement waiting in the wings anytime soon: rumors of a Sprint Windows Phone 8 model surfaced as early as March, but the Yellow Swoosh network was nowhere to be seen among the Windows Phone 8 launch partners slated for this fall. The gap is conspicuous enough that Sprint subscribers may need a heaping amount of patience if they're not willing to switch networks for a Windows Phone fix in the near future.

Everything Everywhere has been Ofcom approved to bring 4G to the UK, and the news hasn't sat well with rival networks.
Of course, the US has had access to the next-generation of mobile broadband for a couple of years, and investment bank Piper Jaffray told Apple Insider 46.8 per cent of Americans say they "don't need 4G".
The survey was conducted on the basis that the next iPhone 5 is likely to feature the supercharged mobile web tech.
Additional results show that 25.7 per cent reckon 4G and LTE are the same (they're not exactly, as the speed can differ between the two), while 15.1 per cent said 4G LTE was the best, and 12.4 per cent favoured 4G.
51 per cent of the consumers said they have no idea who provides the best network, and it's likely that opinion will be replicated over in the UK when the spectrum is offered to all operators.

A video has been posted on YouTube which features a number of allegedly leaked iPhone 5 components.
The video, posted by SmartPhone Medic features the iPhone 5 front panel compared to the 4S, showing it to have a bigger screen and home button. The front camera has been moved to a new position above the speaker rather than next to it.
In the video we also see the screen next to a Samsung Galaxy S3, showing the S3 to still have a bigger screen than the Apple handset.
SmartPhone Media also claims to have got its hands on an iPhone 5 flex cable. One differences between the two is a repositioned headphone jack, which PCR reported on last month.

Popular iOS action adventure Infinity Blade has undergone an interesting transformation – it has been turned into a political beat ‘em up.
Starring none other than American presidential hopefuls Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, the title – called VOTE! – is free to download on iPhone and iPad. It comes from Infinity Blade creator Chari Entertainment.
Players can deck their hero out in an assortment of USA-themed paraphernalia such as baseball caps and a Statue of Liberty themed lightsaber. Players must battle their political opponent to win votes and campaign funding.
Also worked into the game is real-life election news groups Rock the Vote and Project Vote Smart.

Worrying news if you're a big spender on Google Play.
Mobile security is always a big consumer fear, and following reports of Android malware rising by 300 per cent in Q2, app security provider Arxan Technologies claims 100 per cent of the top 100 paid Android apps have been hacked.
But don't feel so smug if you're on Apple, as data says 92 per cent of the top 100 paid iOS apps have also been invaded, alongside the top 15 free apps on iOS and Android.
In total, 40 per cent of popular free iOS apps have been hacked, doubling to 80 per cent for Android, spanning across genres including games, business, finance, social media, health, and more, demonstrating that no app will remain unturned.
The foreign penetration looks to achieve a series of goals such as disabling security, unlocking features, running illegal malware, and stealing codes and IP.
Jukka Alanen, VP at Arxan, said: "We envision a thriving app economy with freedom and confidence to innovate and distribute new apps. However, this potential is being threatened by hackers, and most enterprises, security teams, and app developers are not prepared for these attacks.

As reported earlier today by PCR, a video has surfaced that reveals a whole bunch of components that are reportedly taken from the latest iPhone.
One of the items in particular is a logic board, which was exposed to show off more of the device's components.
The importance of this would be the presence of an A5X chip, which is commonly found within Apple's latest iPad.
Whilst this may sound impressive off the bat, the chip itself is only a dual-core offering - something that would trail behind the power of chips within the device's closest competitors such as the HTC One X, Samsung Galaxy S3 and LG Optimus 4X.

There's no visual overhaul as it just did yesterday with Facebook Messages, but Facebook has now announced an update for its iOS app that promises some fairly big improvements of its own. According to the company, the app was "rebuilt from the ground up," and is now twice as fast as the previous version. That includes a faster opening of the app itself, smoother and faster scrolling, and photos that are said to load "instantly" -- changes that are largely due to a switch from the old HTML5 code to iOS' native programming language. Unfortunately, we're not able to test those claims ourselves just yet, but Facebook says that the update (version 5.0) will be available later today.
Update: The app is now available to download from the App Store, and it does indeed appear to be quite a bit speedier.

Jury return verdict in Apple vs Samsung patent dispute.
A jury in California has ruled that Samsung should pay Apple $1.05bn (£665m) in damages in the intellectual property lawsuit that has the tech world on the edge of its seat.
The jury said that several of Samsung's devices had infringed Apple's software and design patents. It also rejected Samsung's claims that several of its patents had been breached and awarded it no damages.
Apple may now seek an import ban of some of its rival's products, blocking them from the US market.

Web domains were seized after distributing dodgy apps.
It's probably unlikely RIM is a practitioner of the dark arts (given its own misfortune), but reports of illegal Android malware, hacks andviruses have rocketed ever since the BlackBerry maker called the Google OS a cesspool.
So perhaps unsurprisingly, the US District of Justice has revealed the capture of three pirate Android app websites as part of an FBI, and international law enforcement operation with the French and the Dutch.
Applanet.net, appbucket.net and snappzmarket.com are all now in the hands of the government, while visitors will find the sites closed, decorated in a banner that warns against copyright fraud.
Breuer, assistant attorney general, said: "Cracking down on piracy of copyrighted works – including popular apps – is a top priority of the Criminal Division.
"Software apps have become an increasingly essential part of our nation’s economy and creative culture, and the Criminal Division is committed to working with our law enforcement partners to protect the creators of these apps and other forms of intellectual property from those who seek to steal it."

Judge rules that Samsung and Apple have infringed IP and blocks sales of handsets and tablets.
Apple and Samsung have both been ordered to stop selling some smartphones and tablet computers in South Korea and pay damages after a court ruled they infringed each other's patents.
Although Samsung did not copy the design of the iPhone, the court ruled that it did infringe on an Apple patent related to the bounceback touchscreen feature that shows when a user has reached the end of a page.
Samsung was fined 25 million won ($22,000) and will be unable to sell its Galaxy SI and SII phones or the Galaxy Tab and Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablets.
Meanwhile, the court decided that Apple violated two Samsung wireless technology patents. Apple was ordered to pay Samsung 40 million won ($35,400) and has been banned from selling iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and both iPad and iPad 2 tablets in the country.
While this court ruling is important, it is small fry compared to the situation in the US, where Apple is demanding more than $2.5 billion in damages and an order to permanently ban Samsung from selling patent-infringing products.
Samsung argues Apple owes $422 million for violating a clutch of its patents.

Social giant knows its Android app sucks so is eating its own dog food.
A report in Business Insider says that Facebook is encouraging (and in some cases ordering) its staff to give up their iPhones for Android devices.
However, this is not because of a Facebook/Apple dispute, rather it's because the social media monster knows how bad its Android app is, so is making its developers live with it as an incentive to make improvements.
This process, known as dogfooding, is common in the tech industry.
The last update to the iOS Facebook app made it a native iOS experience rather than using the HTML5 from the website, so maybe we're going to see a native Android experience as well.
While using HTML5 has worked quite well in some respects, it has led to inconsistencies between browser and app accessibility, particularly since Facebook rolled out Timeline.

Security changes could lead to other smartphone platforms being allowed.
Until now BlackBerry has been the only smartphone allowed to be used in government in the UK because of its unparalleled security. However, that might be about to change.
According to Computer Weekly: "Currently, Blackberry is the only smartphone device with impact level 3 (IL3) accreditation for information deemed sensitive to the working of government.
"However, under the new Government Protective Marking System (GPMS) the IL1-IL3 categories will be loosely classified together as Tier 1 (T1), which is intended to open the government market to a greater number of smartphone providers."
What this boils down to is, security will be mediated using third party clients running on other platforms, giving government staff and officials the ability to move away from RIM's device and into the arms of… say… iPhone and Android?

And they hate slow glitch-riddled offerings – take note, developers.
The latest report from Strategy Analytics' Wireless Media Lab warns developers that they have certain expectations to meet if they want to secure customer loyalty, and make a popular app, while app stores should make the content easy to find.
Consumers want stable, useful, and easy to use apps, and are irked by apps are that send spam and run too many ads, as well as ones that are slow and glitchy.
But they shouldn't be too choosy, considering that they pay for less than ten per cent of the apps on their phone, meaning more than 80 per cent are free.
Of course, that doesn't guarantee a premium app is going to meet the standards they demand, and the data is a wake-up call to all.
Taryn Tulay, analyst, Strategy Analytics Wireless Media Lab, said: "For apps to hold any monetary value to the consumer, apps must be unique, of good quality and used by the consumer on a daily basis – providing them with a service or feature that they cannot get anywhere else."

It has never been shy of charging top dollar for its iOS games, but Square Enix is to try and push the boat out further still.
The publisher has finally confirmed an August 31st Western release date for its episodic Final Fantasy mobile title Final Fantasy Dimensions, which was first released in the Japanese market some two years ago.
It has also confirmed the pricing. The first of the game’s four chapters can be downloaded for £1.99, but chapters two to four will cost £6.99 apiece. Or the four can be bought in a single £19.99 purchase.
That makes the game the most expensive that Square Enix has yet put out on iOS and one of (if not the?) most expensive games ever to hit the platform. What the price does suggest, however, is that the company has enjoyed success with its previous premium priced offerings.
Not wanting to undersell what is still a rich IP, Square has been careful never to devalue the Final Fantasy brand in its move from consoles to mobile.
The standard version of Final Fantasy currently costs £10.99 to download, with the HD iPad version costing £12.99 and Final Fantasy III for iPad costs £11.99. Even non-FF brands have followed similar strategy, with Chaos Rings II costing £12.99 to download.
And unlike companies like EA who will frequently cut the price of its catalogue titles to 69p for a weekend, Square Enix has stuck by its prices.
What makes this particularly interesting is the prevalence of free-to-play titles on smartphones. With the barriers to entry lower than ever before, key IP can still clearly compete in a space dominated by free games.
And you can bet that rival publishers haven’t let this go unnoticed.

There's a lot of talk of a new iPhone coming soon, and the Chinese know it. IDC researchers estimate that Apple's share of smartphones in the country was sliced almost in half during the second quarter, to 10 percent, as expectations and rumors led the local population to wait for the big update. Better competition also played a part in denting iPhone shipments, although it's not Apple's chief rival Samsung who's responsible. Rather, it's China's own Lenovo that had the most impact. It broke into the double digits with a second-place 11 percent share thanks to recently started indirect sales of its Android-dominated lineup, while Samsung saw its own share dip slightly to 19 percent. Chinese companies ZTEand Huawei bracketed Apple at third and fifth. We wouldn't be surprised if the balance of power shifts inabout a month, but the impacts to Apple and Samsung alike show just how tough it can be to stay on top in one of the fastest-growing markets on Earth -- especially one with so many local brands.

After refreshing its computer range, Apple's gearing up for two events for its new phone and tablet hardware, according to sources at AllThingsD. Given the excitement welling up behind its next iPhone, many have noted (including Daring Fireball's John Gruber) that it would make a whole lot of sense to furnish both the phone and the heavily rumored smaller tablet with individual events -- and that is, apparently, what's going to happen. Unfortunately, the anonymous sources weren't revealing anything further -- Apple's yet to confirm that posited September 12th event date, let alone any secondary event. But when it does, be assured that we'll be there to cover both of them.

Capcom's masssively successful (in Japan) Monster Hunter series is returning to the massively successful (in Japan) GREE platform this year, for an iOS/Android social game called Monster Hunter: Massive Hunting.
Similar to Capcom's previous iOS Monster Hunter, you fight giant beasts using touch controls, including "tap and flick" gestures. Players can also pick up materials to make new equipment, and use a "friend hunting" system, which adds a currently undefined social element. Presumably it doesn't involve hunting and killing your real life friends.

On August 24, a California court ruled in favor of Apple in its patent-infringement case against Samsung, hitting the latter with a $1.05 billion fine. Tech pundits spent the weekend chattering about the possible repercussions of the decision, which Samsung will surely appeal. One of the biggest issues under discussion: how Apple's victory will affect Google Android, the operating system that powers the majority of Samsung's mobile devices, and itself a player in the patent-infringement actions shaking the tech world. For its part, Google made every effort to create some distance between Android and the smoking ruins of Samsung's case. 'The court of appeals will review both infringement and the validity of the patent claims' the company wrote in a widely circulated statement. 'Most of these don't relate to the core Android operating system, and several are being re-examined by the US Patent Office.' Google didn't end there. 'The mobile industry is moving fast and all players—including newcomers—are building upon ideas that have been around for decades,' the statement continued. 'We work with our partners to give consumers innovative and affordable products, and we don't want anything to limit that.

The stock Nexus 7 peaks at a 1.3GHz clock speed when it's at full burn. That's certainly good enough for the $199 price tag, but eager adopters have just hit a new record in trying to wring out even more of a bang for the buck. Courtesy of a custom Elite kernel from XDA-Developers' Clemsyn, the Tegra 3 in the mini tablet will scale all the way to a heady 2GHz. You'd be right in suspecting that it leads to some dramatic speed boosts: the Nexus 7 at this pace can put a Transformer Prime to shame in common benchmarks, let alone most smartphones. Reaching the loftier heights of performance does require nerves of steel, however. The Elite kernel is very much a rough build that the creator doesn't yet trust with the public, and NVIDIA's processor is already known to get toasty under significantly added stress. There's hope a refined kernel will make for a safer venture into unknown territory. If you can't wait to throw at least some caution (and the warranty) to the wind, though, hit the second source link for code that will reach a slightly less melt-prone 1.8GHz.

South Korean company suffers $12bn loss in market value as court's decision sends shockwaves across the tech community.
While there is talk that Samsung's patent case loss to Apple could ultimately be beneficial to the company, what matters right now is the firm's plummeting market value.
As shareholders reacted to the $1bn fine imposed by a US court, Samsung - which isn't traded on the US stock market - dropped 7.5 per cent in Korean trading, a loss of more than $12bn in market value.
Alternately, shares of Apple have leapt by more than two per cent, adding nearly $15 billion to the market capitalisation of the world’s most valuable company.
Samsung hopes its efforts to innovate will retain the loyalty of consumers. An internal memo issued by Samsung management after the verdict, said: "History has shown there has yet to be a company that has won the hearts and minds of consumers and achieved continuous growth when its primary means to competition has been the outright abuse of patent law, not the pursuit of innovation.
“We trust that the consumers and the market will side with those who prioritise innovation over litigation, and we will prove this beyond doubt."

A leaked internal memo from the telecoms provider has surfaced, which tells its employees to sell against the iPhone.
The document, which was leaked by unofficial T-Mobile news siteTmoNews, certainly indicates that T-Mobile users within the US will not be getting their hands on the new iPhone 5 once it is released.
Whilst there has yet to be any confirmation from the company if they will indeed be stocking the device or not, it would be a highly questionable move to have employees sell against arguably the most anticipated device of the year, if they were set to stock it themselves.

Google expresses concern that ruling could limit consumer access to Android devices
Apple is seeking to ban sales of eight Samsung phones following its landmark $1bn lawsuit victory against the mobile giant last week.
The world’s most valuable company is attempting to ban the sale of the Galaxy S 4G, Galaxy S2 AT&T, Galaxy S2, Galaxy S2 T-Mobile, Galaxy S2 Epic 4G, Galaxy S Showcase, Droid Charge and the Galaxy Prevail.
Latest generation sales of the device are not affected however.
As well as being penalised with a $1.05bn fine for infringing six of Apple’s patents,Reuters has reported shares in the company fell 7.5 per cent on Monday, resulting in a loss of $12bn in the firm’s value.
The latest move by Apple, if successful, could see a further de-valuation of the mobile giant.

Activision has revealed its intentions to become much more involved in the mobile space.
The company's mobile VP Greg Canessa emphasized to CVG the strength in the variety of brands Activision could consider for mobile efforts.
"We have a rich thirty-year history from the Atari days to the Blizzard merger. We have about 350 different brands and IPs to work with," Canessa said. "That’s legacy IP, that’s triple-A IP and that’s licences with other companies."
Canessa added the publisher will look to use its big marketing campaigns for its mobile titles as well.
"The creation of new IP is expensive, and when you consider how much money we spend on marketing our IP, we can apply that halo affect [sic] to our mobile properties. That gives us a tremendous advantage. You are going to continue to see us take advantage of our big marketing campaigns to help our mobile products too."

Android snatches four per cent of iOS' market share.
Mobile marketing and ad firm Velti says Apple devices account for 58 per cent of in-app ad impressions, but iPhone's share has fallen from 31 per cent to 27 per cent, while iPod Touch has dipped from 22 per cent to 19 per cent.
This made room for Android to climb by four per cent, though iOS still dominates the tablet market, an area that continues to see rivals struggle against the iPad.
iPad in-app ad impressions climbed from nine per cent to 12 per cent, supported by its recent egging-free tablet launch in China where traffic surged by 150 per cent in its debut week.
The new iPad is now actually catching up with the iPad 2's impressions, accounting for 20 per cent in five, while its predecessor reached 24 per cent in the same time period.
Meanwhile, the Kindle Fire is the leading Android device with a 38 per cent share, despite Samsung the number one Android tablet maker.

Apple could be carving up a slice of contactless action.
NFC is thought to play a huge part in the future of mobile payments, with more operators and OEMs jumping into the space, perhapsmost noticeably demonstrated with Samsung's high-end Galaxy S III.
Rival firm Apple is now thought to be eyeing a leap into the contactless market, as AppleInsider reports an iPhone 5 casing that appears to have an NFC chip inside.
The Cupertino giant revealed Passbook in June, an iOS 6 m-commerce hub that will aggregate all daily deals and payment services in one place, but no direct NFC comment has been made.
Similarly, no official talk of an iPhone 5 has been offered, but the device is thought to be unveiled on September 12th.

And most of the traffic comes from the iPad.
Special offers site dealnews says Americans spend around 38 per cent more time shopping on their mobile devices in summer – perhaps a result of buying bargains on-the-move during on sunny days out.
In fact, 22.5 per cent of total dealnews site traffic came from mobile devices on last month's Independence Day (July 4th), the highest across the season for both 2012 and 2011.
That's equivalent to a 43 per cent rise on average weekday mobile traffic, while the iPad accounted for 40 per cent of all visits on the day, ahead of 30 per cent and 26 per cent for the iPhone and Android devices, respectively.
Dan de Grandpre, CEO of dealnews, said: "Since more people are shopping from their mobile devices now than ever before, it's imperative that retailers and merchants invest in dedicated mobile sites to improve consumers' mobile shopping experience."
Last week, Travelzoo US reported a summer mobile visit surge, with connected devices accounting for a quarter of total web traffic.

The Apple-1 is expected to fetch between £50,000 and £80,000.
The 1976 machine will be auctioned off within Christie’s Travel, Science and Natural History sale in London on October 9th.
“This is the computer that started Apple, now recognised as the most valuable company in the world; its significance in making computer technology accessible for all cannot be undervalued,†commented James Hyslop, scientific specialist at Christie’s.
Ground-breaking at the time of its invention and intended to make technology more accessible, the Apple-1 consisted of a pre-assembled motherboard, representing a major step forward in the world of computing when all other examples on the market were bought as self-assembly kits requiring engineering prior to use.
Priced at $666.66, the first Apple-1s were sent to purchasers direct from the garage of Steve Jobs' parents' house. It is not clear how many Apple-1s were sold, but by April 1977 the price was dropped to $475.
It was officially discontinued by October 1977, after approximately 200 units were produced. It is estimated that less than fifty are still in existence today.

New startup looks to make portable gaming more accessible
PlayMG, a new startup formed by veterans of the electronics, game and social industries, is launching the first dedicated Android gaming portable, called the MG, this holiday season. The MG is a completely Wi-Fi based device so their are no data plans, and the unit itself comes with a suggested retail price of $169.99.
Eager consumers who support the device on Kickstarter can get it for less. The first 2,000 early adopters who visit Kickstarter and pledge $99 will be rewarded with an MG, while other supporters will be able to order their MG for $149. [Note: the Kickstarter page will go live tomorrow.]
When the MG ships it'll come with preloaded games and a cash credit toward future game purchases. The MG runs on Android 4.0 - Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS), which "means many of the great game apps designed to operate on ICS can be fully experienced on the MG, unlike many of the mobile devices locked into data plans by service providers that haven't upgraded," the company noted.
Looking at the portable's specifications, it features a 4-inch touchscreen, 4GB built in memory with SD port for expandable memory ability, 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera and ability to shoot and play video, and a stereo headset jack. [Update: we now know that it has a Cortex A5 processor.]
Additionally, PlayMG has introduced an MG Origins Avatar System, which means that as gamers use the MG, "they gain points, and can customize and unlock the origin story of their own personal gaming companion."
Another interesting feature is the MG Family Collaboration System, which includes the "DebitSmart" Digital Wallet and "Remote Trust" notification function. Essentially, parents can establish a reloadable debit account for their teen's MG and create "game allowances" that link their credit card or bank account to whatever set amount they determine. This ensures no surprise charges.
As for the MG's "Remote Trust" notification system, that allows kids to discover, download and play the games from the app marketplace, and at the same time parents can opt in to receive email updates on their kids' MG activity.
"Like the music business before it, the gaming industry is experiencing a dramatic digital transformation, where emerging 'app based gaming' is becoming the dominant method of playing and purchasing games," said T. Scott Edwards, PlayMG Founding Partner and Marketing Guru. "The MG's price will mean some kids will be able to enjoy app gaming for the very first time, and parents will be happy to discover the MG will mean their kids are finally going to stop asking to borrow their smartphones and tablets."
"We kept the startup of our company and the MG system close to the vest until we felt we could announce it in all its glory after extensive R&D and multiple rounds of prototype testing," he added. "Our approach has meant we can be more nimble and innovative than the 'Big Guys' because we aren't stuck with their large overhead costs, legacy businesses and slow corporate structure."
Logistics of any device launch can be complicated, so PlayMG has decided to sign up with Fulfillment by Amazon. The company is also currently in talks with major retailers throughout the country.

Motorola's war with Apple has certainly been overshadowed by the showdown with Samsung. But, with the latter melodrama shifting into quiet mode, focus is coming back to the battle with Moto. That ongoing story has taken a rather unexpected turn, however. A filing on Monday revealed that the Google subsidiary has agreed to license some (if not all) of its standards-essential patents to Cupertino... inGermany, at least. When exactly the deal was struck isn't clear, and neither side has announced a royalty rate as of yet. It could be that the German courts will decide what is appropriate according to FRAND rules, but the agreement also includes an admission by Apple that it is liable for past damages relating to these patents. The terms seem to include only "cellular standard-essential" patents, which means the company's claims regarding WiFi and video codecs could still be used as an avenue of attack. But, with at least one set of FRAND patents set aside, we wouldn't be surprised if the rest followed. It may be that Moto has simply decided to pick its fights more carefully, in light Apple's recent legal victory and growing pressure from the European Commission surrounding potential abuse of standards-essential patents. Or, it could be an olive branch and a sign that the patent wars are winding down -- a possibility we'd joyously embrace.

Internet rumour that Samsung bitch-slapped Apple by sending them 21 billion five cent coins is amazingly untrue.
The story goes…
Yesterday, more than 30 trucks filled with five cent coins arrived at Apple’s headquarters in California.
Apple security were in the process of freaking out before Apple CEO Tim Cook was called by Samsung explaining that they will pay all$1.05 billion dollars of their fine in coins, and this was the first instalment.
Various legitimate sources have reported the story, saying that as the court did not specify a payment method, Samsung can pay Apple the enormous fine however they see fit, and it has chosen to be the biggest troll in the world.
Sadly, the story is not true at all. So, over the next few days when someone passes it off as fact, you can set them straight. The story originated on humour site 9gag, a place normally reserved for z-list memes and screenshots of Facebook statuses.

For a start, 66 per cent of owners are male.
The iPad continues to slay every hint of competition on the tablet market, and with three versions now available, Infographic Labs has observed just exactly who uses the Apple devices.
Interestingly, it seems to be a boys toy as males occupy two-thirds of the ownership.
Most users are aged between 25 and 36, and 53.2m people now own an iPad, compared to 11.5m in 2010.

A lucky Samsung fan has received a free customised Galaxy S3 after amusing the company with a drawing of a cute dragon going ‘RWAR’.
After asking for a free Galaxy S3 on the company’s Canadian Facebook page, the fan, named Shane, received a customised phone featuring his own artwork.
Although initially Shane’s request was turned down, in which he was offered a picture of a kangaroo riding a unicycle instead, Samsung decided to award him with a free phone after the story went viral in May via Reddit, ahead of the Galaxy S3’s launch in Canada.

According to Samsung, this is the only customised Galaxy S3 in Canada. It features Shane’s MS Paint-style drawing on the front and back of the phone as well as a special wallpaper on the screen’s background.
Now let’s see how many other fanboys swamp Samsung Canada’s Facebook page with drawings of imaginary creatures…

Word on the street is that Windows Phone 8 will get its official launch on October 29th. When asked for confirmation, Microsoft issued a pretty standard "no comment," which leads us to believe there might actually be something to this rumor. With Windows 8 slated to land on October 26th, we wouldn't be surprised to see its portable counterpart hit the market just a few days later, as ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley is suggesting. October is already expected to be a rather hectic month for Microsoft, with launch ofcountless Windows 8 tablets scheduled. Putting WP8 out alongside its first batch of handsets (helloATIV S!) would only make sense, really. We can think of a reason or two that Microsoft might want to utterly dominate a few news cycles.

Samsung took to the stage in Berlin to showcase its new product lineup, and one of the featured devices is the first confirmed Windows Phone 8 device. Dubbed the ATIV S, the new Microsoft-sanctioned smartphone offers a 4.8-inch screen with an HD Super AMOLED display, a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm CPU, 8MP rear camera and 1.9MP front-facing cam. Additionally, it's got a beefy 2,300mAh battery, 1GB RAM, Gorilla Glass 2 and will come in both 16 and 32GB flavors. At 8.7mm, it's also reasonably thin. Its body is made of brushed aluminum and comes with a WP8-friendly MicroSD slot. We've got another pic of the ATIV S below, and we'll have a hands-on to you as soon as possible.

Archos already has its hands in the kiddie-tablet market, with its 7-inch Arnova Child Pad, and it's taking on the productivity-minded crowd with its keyboard-toting 101 XS. Now the company is going after another niche segment with the just-announced GamePad. The 7-inch slate runs Android 4.0 with a dual-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz and a quad-core Mali 400 MP GPU, and it sports physical gaming controls in addition to the standard touchscreen. Archos includes its own "game recognition and mapping tools," which ensure that the physical buttons are compatible with Android games that use virtual controls (some 1,000 titles are apparently compatible with the GamePad at this point). Of course, this is an internet-enabled device as well, and it will include full access to the Play market and WiFi connectivity when it goes on sale at the end of October. Other specs include 8GB of internal storage, plus a microSD card slot that adds up to 64GB. There's also a mini-HDMI connection for outputting content to your TV. For now, Archos is only announcing pricing as "less than €150", and the device will drop in the US and Europe at the same time. For now, the below-the-break press release will have to satisfy your curiosity.

It's just one more sign that the iPhone 5 is right around the corner.
Apple's Reuse and Recycle service is a great way to get some money back when upgrading to a new device, and is a good indicator of when a new product is coming.
So, it's little surprise that the iPhone 4S appearing as a recycle option on the Apple site has given the iPhone 5 rumour mill a fresh shot of adrenaline.
The recycling offer strongly suggests Apple is going to announce its new handset soon, and the much-touted September 12 launch date seems increasingly likely.
If users want to trade in their 4S, the amount of cash you get depends on the exact specs and the condition of the handset. The maximum available is $345 for a 64GB iPhone 4S in very good condition with a battery that fully charges and power cord included.
A more common 16GB phone will still reach $285 if it’s in great condition.

South Korean company steals a march on Nokia, announcing their Windows phones just days before the Finnish firm.
The announcement of the Galaxy Note II was a given for IFA 2012, but the reveal of the Samsung Ativ S - its first smartphone to run Microsoft's upcoming Windows 8 Phone system - was a surprise.
Featuring a 4.8in display, the Ativ S will be one of the bigger models on the market and contains an NFC chip.
Alongside the Windows smartphone, Samsung also unveiled the Samsung Ativ tablet running Windows 8 on a low-power ARM processor (aka Windows RT) and the Ativsmart PC and Ativsmart PC Pro, Windows 8 tablets with detachable keyboards similar to Asus's Transformer hybrids.

Samsung says what it sees, like saying the Galaxy S III is "designed for humans". Well, it's hardly likely to be used by lizard men.
Now, the South Korean electronics mammoth says its new Galaxy Camera, which is powered by Android Jelly Bean, is a camera reborn. However, it follows last week's unveiling of an Android-based Nikon COOLPIX S800c camera.
Seemingly, mobile operating systems (or maybe just Android) have become so mainstream that adding the tech to cameras will become the norm in the future.
The Galaxy Camera has been built on the OS to 'revolutionise' photography, opening it up to Google Play so that users can download photo apps to edit and share their snaps on-the-go.
Of course, access to the Android store means users can download any app, game etc that takes their fancy, while the 'S Suggest' feature recommends new offerings.

Adobe pressured by 'strategic partners' to make browser plug-in available again on Android
Adobe’s Flash player has returned to the Google App Store despite having been pulled from Android devices just two weeks ago.
As reported by the BBC, the company said that a number of “strategic partners†in the UK had pressured the it into bringing its web browser plug-in back online.
Adobe had previously planned to end work on Flash for Android, and said it would no longer be certified to run on mobiles operating on Android 4.1, and that access through the Google Play Store would be limited.
However, partners such as media giant BBC have convinced the firm to bring it back, but only for the short-term. The UK broadcaster suggested that it needed time to shift to new technology as the plug-in was crucial to its iPlayer service.
"Flash Player continues to be available on Google Play for users in the UK for a short while due to requests from strategic partners," said an Adobe spokesperson.

Developer Josh Begley, a student at Clay Shirky's NYU Media Lab, created an application called Drones+ that allows users to track U.S. drone strikes on a map of Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia. Far from innovative, the app in question merely relays and positions strikes as available from the U.K.'s Bureau of Investigative Journalism. First Apple rejected the application claiming it was 'not useful or entertaining enough,' then it was rejected for hiding a corporate logo. And the latest reason for objection is that Begley's content is 'objectionable and crude' and 'that many audiences would find [it] objectionable." Begley's at a loss for how to change information on a map. He's not showing images of the drone strikes nor even graphically describing the strikes. From the end of the article, 'The basic idea was to see if he could get App Store denizens a bit more interested in the U.S.' secretive, robotic wars, with information on those wars popping up on their phones the same way an Instagram comment or retweet might. Instead, Begley's thinking about whether he'd have a better shot making the same point in the Android Market.'"

"There seems to be an interesting side-effect of the flawed jury verdict of last Friday — Samsung sales have surged. Even with the approach of the launch of Apple's new iPhone, the Galaxy SIII is sold out in many stores, and there is a measurable increase in sales, according to Trip Chowdhry, the managing director of equity research at Global Equities Research, cited in Forbes. Maybe Apple really managed to convince its customers that Samsung phones are equivalent or better, so they are being overcharged? Or is it a rush to buy the currently best smartphone in the market in case there is an injunction on its sale in the U.S. any time soon?

Amazon has released a rather bizarre bit of news today. The Kindle Fire has completely sold out. You can no longer buy one, and the wording of the press release suggests there won't be any more manufactured. In nine months on sale Amazon claims to have secured 22 percent of tablet sales in the U.S.. With that in mind, Amazon will definitely be selling more Kindle Fires, however, the next one you'll be able to buy will probably have a '2' at the end of the name. Jeff Bezos said that the Kindle Fire is Amazon's most successful product launch so far and that there's 'an exciting roadmap ahead.' He also confirmed Amazon will continue to offer hardware, but there's no detail beyond that.
