Windows Mobile And Symbian S60 Get Google Maps Upgrade With Transit Info

Posted By: wraggster

Windows Mobile and S60 users get an update to Google Maps this week that includes public transit stops as well as user star ratings for local businesses. The free upgrade shows not just where stops are for particular transit lines but also allows you to incorporate them into building your route. Blackberry users have had this functionality for a few weeks now and it's likely a feature that will be updated for most other mobile operating systems in the next few weeks.

HTC's Android Phones Still On Track For Q4 2008

Posted By: wraggster

HTC's CFO reiterated that their Android phones—previously slated to be released Q4 of this year—will be released Q4 of this year. Android handsets are still planning to be shipped to "ODM clients" in the fourth quarter, meaning that you might not actually see them until late, late 2008 or early 2009. Why? Because those ODM clients, like T-Mobile or various other companies who are using HTC to design the base phone but customize it even more, need time to work their own add-ons in. So yes, on time might not mean on time for you to play with unless HTC releases an Android phone with the HTC branding, without going through secondary companies.

MasterGear 2.6 released

Posted By: JKKDARK

New version of the Master System and Game Gear emulator for your cell phone.

Changelog:

- Ported MasterGear to Unix using the new EMULib framework. I will try to compile the new MG-Unix for as many Unix flavors as possible. At the moment, only Ubuntu Linux binaries are available.
- Ported MasterGear to Maemo OS2008 used in N800 and N810 internet tablets from Nokia. MG-Maemo is specifically optimized for internet tablets using assembler modules from MG-Symbian.
- Replaced -zoom/-nozoom command line options with -soft/-nosoft and made softening, scanline simulation, and synchronization options work on all relevant platforms (Unix, Maemo, MSDOS).
- Made [F8] toggle scanline simulation, while [SHIFT]+[F8] toggles softening.
- Removed -novsync option from MG-MSDOS, as -nosync does the same thing.
- Fixed situation when MG-Windows could stay in memory after being closed.
- MG-Symbian display routines rewritten in ARM assembler for speed. This should mainly affect UIQ3 users but S60 users will also benefit.
- Split MG-Symbian configuration menu into four tabs, making "Video" and "Audio" settings separate.
- Added "Audio Latency", "Skip Frames", and "Sync Updates" settings to MG-Symbian

HTC Says Android Phone Not Delayed, Really, They Swear

Posted By: wraggster

Yesterday, an analyst said that according to his sources, HTC is not having a jolly good time developing their Android headset, and it's probably going to be delayed 'til 2009. "Not so!" says HTC. They say that his facts do "not match the facts" and you will damn well see their Android phone by the end of 2008, which'll make them first to market with one. Glad that's cleared up! If you believe HTC, anyway (and we really want to).

Would You Watch Cellphone Ads if it Got You Free or Cheap Service?

Posted By: wraggster

The Direct Marketing Association, a lovely group dedicated to forcing ads down your throat, have done a study that found that while a mere 7% of cellphone users are open to receiving ads on their phone, a much more significant 24% say they've responded to such ads on their phone. A whole quarter of the phone population responding to ads? That has advertisers salivating, so you know that phone ads will be the norm soon enough. So, lets say they came up with a deal that paid for half of your bill if you agreed to watch a few ads a day on your phone. Would you do it?

TuneWiki Audio For Google Android Looks Very Impressive

Posted By: wraggster

This is TuneWiki, the music playback app that shows Karaoke-like lyrics and album art on almost all the music on your phone. It's been officially ported to Android and looks very very impressive. They've added features like searching YouTube for videos of your tracks, plus searching their database for certain song lyrics if you only remember caught a part of a song. There's also the built-in Google Maps API for looking at other people using TuneWiki and being able to see what people are listening to around a certain area. Yeah, we're pretty excited.

Analyst says first Android phone will ship in November, possibly without Exchange

Posted By: Shrygue

via Engadget

The HTC Dream may have already cleared the FCC, but at least one analyst that has actually seen the very first Android-based device, Moe Tanabian of IBB Consulting, says that it will only be hitting stores around Thanksgiving in November, and not September or October as many were expecting. He also says that its "unclear" whether the phone will support Microsoft Exchange or not (at least right out of the gate), and that users may have to rely on Gmail if they want to receive push email.

Among other tidbits, he also confirms that the device will have access to T-Mobile's own App Store-like service, and that it'll come with Google's advertising software pre-installed, which he says could not only lower the cost of the phone, but allow for lower monthly service fees as well. Of course, you'll have to take that with all the usual analyst caveats for the time being, but we're sure we'll be hearing plenty more to back it up or shoot it down before the September / October / November launch.

Nokia launches N96 in India

Posted By: JKKDARK

http://technews.in/news/nokia/nokia_..._n96_in_india/

This has definitely been the most awaited phone in India as far as Nokia are concerned. Lets just put aside the Apple iPhone 3G for the moment and concentrate on the new offering from Nokia.

The Nokia N96 comes with a 2.8 inch TFT screen which as a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels. This means a neat 16 million colors display for your multimedia dreams. The phone runs on a Dual ARM 9 processor clocking 264 Mhz CPU speed. The phone has 16GB of internal memory which definitely is enough to compete with the Apple iPhone. The N96 comes with 128 MB RAM for faster program applications. If this 16GB of memory is not enough for you, there is a microSD card slot into which you can slot in your 8GB card and enjoy 24GB of movies and music.

Other features are top of the line data connectivity options like EDGE, HSDPA, GPRS and bluetooth A2DP. The phone adds on a 5megapixel camera to overtake itself in features against the iPhone.

Video calling is possible with the VGA camera in front of the phone. The phone has a 3.5mm headphone socket which acts as a TV out. FM Radio with a GPS chip built in the phone, 3D stereo speakers and a lot of bundled data comes with the phone.

PlayStation IP heading to mobile

Posted By: Shrygue

via Mobile Entertainment

The three-year deal marks the first time Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios has licensed its titles to be published by a third party on mobile.

SCE has previously released mobile versions of games like Ratchet & Clank through its Sony Pictures Digital unit.

Player X will release Buzz! in the autumn, with Destruction Derby following in early-2009. Both games will be supported by an integrated cross-platform marketing campaign with SCE.

Buzz! titles for PlayStation 2 have now shipped more than five million units across the PAL region, along with a further 1.25 million units in the Buzz Junior range.

The first Buzz! games for PS3 and PSP are set to arrive in July.

Michael Denny, SVP of SCE Worldwide Studios Europe, said: "The creative proposals that came through from Player X were very encouraging and in line with what we are hoping to do with these two licences.

Leaked Shot Of HTC Touch Diamond Shows CDMA Version Ate All the Pies

Posted By: Shrygue

via Gizmodo US

Over at BoyGeniusReports is this leaked shot of what's allegedly the CDMA version of HTC's fabby Touch Diamond cellphone. And oh boy, oh boy... that's one phone that's not been on a diet: compared to the GSM version sitting on top of it it's one big ugly fat fellow. Apparently it's actually "more comfortable to hold," but you've got to wonder about the weight of the gizmo, and the tightness of your pockets.

HTC Dream's Dimensions Leaked by FCC, Misses Out All-Important Thickness

Posted By: Shrygue

via Gizmodo US

HTC's Dream phone, with Android goodness, hit the FCC last week, and details have been popping up elsewhere too: But a new pic over at FCC has given us a concrete bit of data at last... the Dream's size. It's a svelte 55mm, or 2.17-inches wide, and 115mm or 4.53-inches long. That's a jot shorter than the iPhone 3G's length (though it's 0.28-inches narrower,) and only slightly bigger than the HTC Touch Diamond at 4.02 x 2.01 inches. Do you spot what's missing? The all-important depth of the phone--it's not shown on the FCC imagery. The slide-out QWERTY keypad will play a part in that, but we don't know as yet exactly how slim or pocket-stretching it's going to be.

Nokia launches the N79 and N85

Posted By: wraggster

Nokia promised us two new handsets today, and just as we heard last week, it's the N85 and N79. Not a lot of surprises with the N85 since it popped in the FCC database a couple weeks ago and started appearing in the wild: 2.6-inch AMOLED screen, GPS, five megapixel cam, N-Gage compatibility, 8GB of microSDHC storage, WiFi, and a 28-hour music playback battery life. The N79 replaces the N78, similarly bumping the cam to the big five em-pees with a dual-LED flash, GPS, 4GB microSDHC storage, WiFi, swappable back covers, and a 24-hour music playback battery life. Should be out in the UK as of next month, but we're hoping to see these hit our fair shores posthaste.

PockeTwit - Twitter client with GPS support (Updated 8-24)

Posted By: wraggster

New for PocketPC:

I admit it, I'm a bit of a twitter addict. And like my MPD client, I just couldn't find a twitter client that I liked. So I had some spare time today and whipped up my own. So far it does the basics -- shows the timelines, lets you set your status, and let's you reply to tweets. Of course there's a lot more to be done like showing user info (besides their icon), direct messages, and dealing with URLs in tweets.

It uses the same kinetic list code that I used in the MPD client, so it's kind of fun to scroll up and down and view the menus on the sides.

If you're a twitter user, you can try get my client from the google code site. Let me know if you have anything to say about it.

Updated v.29
GPS support-- It can automatically update your profile with GPS coordianates and search other updates based on your location. See what others are talking about in your area.

Posted By: wraggster

New for PocketPC:

This program brings you a 3D cube which will be used to switch/rotate between running programs.
This will be useful if you assign a hardware button to it.Currently program dont do that automatically!
Use Settings->Personal->Buttons to do that.(assign it to '3D AltTab Switcher').

You can also customize your animation effects from settings, and also animation speed.
If program doesnt show animation either you are low on memory or you have to manually assign a Graphic engine(like GAPI or DirectX) to program.(from settings)

Android News - Announcing a beta release of the Android SDK

Posted By: wraggster

News from Android Developers:

I'm pretty happy today, for two reasons. First, I'm happy because I get to let everyone know that we're releasing a beta SDK. You can read about the new Android 0.9 SDK beta at the Android Developers' Site, or if you want to get straight to the bits, you can visit the download page. Once you've got it, be sure to visit our Developer Forum if you have any questions.

Back in November, we made some SDK builds available that we referred to as "early look" SDKs. The goal was to give developers insight into the platform as early on as possible, and to get some initial feedback. Since then, we've been working with our Open Handset Alliance partners to incorporate much of that feedback, and finish the first devices. Since those devices are shipping in the fourth quarter, the platform is now converging on a final "Android 1.0" version.

The beta SDK that we're releasing today is the first big step on the SDK's road to compatibility with 1.0. Since this is a beta release, applications developed with it may not quite be compatible with devices running the final Android 1.0. However, the APIs are now pretty stable and we don't expect any major changes. If you're one of the many developers who were waiting for something a bit more mature, this might be a good time to take another look.

Since we're now moving quickly toward 1.0, it may also help to know which direction we're headed. To help out, we've also prepared a development roadmap. This will be a living document, and we'll keep it up to date as the Android landscape evolves. Currently it covers the next few months, roughly through the end of the year and a bit into next year. We'll update it with additional detail as we are able to, but even right now it can help give you a picture of how things will play out as the first phones draw near.

Enough of that though -- you're probably wondering what's actually new in the SDK. Well, you should read the Release Notes, the Change Overview and the API Delta Report for all the details, but here are a few highlights:

First and most obviously, the new Home screen is included, along with a ton of UI changes for 1.0.
Some new applications are included: an Alarm Clock, Calculator, Camera, Music player, Picture viewer, and Messaging (for SMS/MMS conversations.)
Several new development tools were added, such as a graphical preview for XML layouts for users of Eclipse, and a tool for constructing 9-patch images.
Since we've got a new Home screen application now, we thought the now-obsolete version from the M5 early-look SDK might be helpful to developers, so its source is included as a sample.
A number of new APIs are fleshed out and improved, and others are now close to their final forms for 1.0.
Tons of bugs were fixed, of course. (If you had problems with the MediaPlayer, try it now!)
There are a lot of changes -- the ones in the list above are just my personal favorites, so you should check out the links above for the full story. Not all the changes are additions, though: I'm sorry to say that we had to remove a few things, such as the GTalkService (for security reasons), and the Bluetooth API. There's a bit more detail in the links above, and we'll follow up on those in particular here in this blog to give you the scoop. In fact, we've got a little list of topics we want to talk about here, so stay tuned.

At the top of this post I said I was happy for two reasons, and now you know one of them -- but what about the other? Well, the second reason is because now that this is out I can finally go get some sleep!

Android News - Some information on APIs removed in the Android 0.9 SDK beta

Posted By: wraggster

News from Android Developers:

Earlier this week, we released a beta of the Android SDK. In the accompanying post, I mentioned that we had to remove some APIs from the platform for Android 1.0, and as a result they don't appear in the 0.9 beta SDK, and won't appear in 1.0-compatible SDKs. Today, I want to take a few minutes to explain why.

GTalkService
We were all really excited when the "XMPPService" (as it was called, at first) was included in the first early-look SDK. Once we brought in our security review team to examine Android, however, they soon realized that, as exciting as it is, the GTalkService has some fundamental security problems. Rich Cannings is one of our security researchers, and here's his explanation of the issues:

When I first read about GTalkService, I was both excited and scared. As a developer, I was interested in a feature that provided a simple interface to send messages between two Google Talk friends. The messages would appear on the receiving device as a standard Intent that was easy to handle. How simple and beautiful is that? Unfortunately, when I put my tin foil hat on, I recognized that things are a little more complicated than that.
We decided to postpone GTalkService's data-messaging functionality for the following reasons:

"Repurposing" Google Talk Friends
Google Talk friends are intended for a different purpose than that envisioned by the GTalkService. Your Google Talk friends can contact you at any time via IM. They can see your email address and often can see your real name. However, the idea of a Google Talk friend does not always line up with the types of people who may want to interact with via an Android application. For example, imagine a really cool mobile Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game using GTalkService. You would have to add all the players to your Google Talk friends list in order to play with them. Next time you log in to Google Talk from your desktop or on the web, you would notice that you have many new "friends". You may not want to chat with these friends -- and perhaps worse, you may not want them to know what your real name or email is. We do realize that Android users will want to interact with other Android users anonymously and for short periods of time, especially in gaming scenarios. Unfortunately, it turns out that using Instant Messaging is not really a good way to do that.
Verifying Remote Intent Senders
Intents were designed to send messages within the device. The Intent subsystem can conclusively determine who sent Intents only when the Intents originate from the same device that services the Intent. When Intents come from other devices, the Intent subsystem cannot determine what application sent the Intent. This can lead to a variety of problems. At first, remote applications could send arbitrary Intents, meaning that your Google Talk friends had almost the same control of your device as you did. Even once that issue was resolved, we recognized that we could not trust the identity of the application who sent the request. We could only trust the identity of the user. So a "bad" application on your friend's device could send a message to a "good" application on your device which would negatively affect the good application. In the end, we determined that the Intent system, as designed for local use, did not lend itself well to being the vehicle for a Remote Procedure Call (RPC).
Placing Too Much Security Burden on Developers
As originally designed, the GTalkService placed a significant burden on the application developer to avoid security flaws and perform user and relationship management. An Android application using GTalkService would be reachable from all of the user's Google Talk friends, and a flaw in that application could pose an inviting target to a malicious "friend" or automated malware. There are automated mechanisms that could be used to help protect vulnerable applications or stop the spread of malware, but the deployment of these technologies was not possible in time for the launch of the first Android handsets.
Although we would have loved to ship this service, in the end, the Android team decided to pull the API instead of exposing users to risk and breaking compatibility with a future, more secure version of the feature. We think it's obvious that this kind of functionality would be incredibly useful, and would open lots of new doors for developers. One of our top priorities after the first devices ship is to develop a device-to-device (and possibly device-to-server) RPC mechanism that is fast, reliable, and protective of developers and users alike.

As a final note, I want to point out that since the GTalkService was always a Google "value-added" service anyway, it was never guaranteed that it would be present on every Android device. That is, GTalkService was never part of core Android. As a result this change actually allows us the potential to build a new system that is part of the core of a future version of Android.

Bluetooth API
The 1.0 version of Android and the first devices will include support for Bluetooth; for instance, Android will support Bluetooth headsets. In the early-look SDKs, there was an incomplete draft of an API that exposed Bluetooth functionality to developers. Unfortunately we had to remove that API from the 1.0 release. To get the skinny on why, I contacted Nick Pelly, one of the Android engineers responsible for that functionality. Here's the story on Bluetooth, in Nick's words:

The reason is that we plain ran out of time. The Android Bluetooth API was pretty far along, but needs some clean-up before we can commit to it for the SDK. Keep in mind that putting it in the 1.0 SDK would have locked us into that API for years to come.

Here's an example of the problems in the API. Client code is required to pass around IBluetoothDeviceCallback objects in order to receive asynchronous callbacks, but IBluetoothDeviceCallback is meant to be an internal interface. That client code would break the moment we added new callbacks to IBluetoothDeviceCallback.aidl. This is not a recipe for future-proof apps.

To make things even more tricky, the recent introduction of the bluez 4.x series brings its own new API. The Android Bluetooth stack uses bluez for GAP and SDP so you'll see more than a passing resemblance to bluez's interfaces in Android. The bluez 4.x change requires us to carefully consider how to structure our API for the future. Again, remember that once we settle on an interface we need to support it for years going forward.

Rather than ship a broken API that we knew was going to change a lot, we chose not to include it. We absolutely intend to support a Bluetooth API in a future release, although we don't know exactly when that will be. This should include some tasty features, such as:

Bindings to GAP and SDP functionality.
Access to RFCOMM and SCO sockets.
Potentially, L2CAP socket support from Java. (This one is under consideration.)
An API to our headset and handsfree profiles.

Kinoma Play: The Best Media Player Ever for Windows Mobile?

Posted By: wraggster

"Kinoma Play ($29.99) is the new media player we've been hinting at in our series of media player reviews this past week. It's essentially a super-charged media player that aims to make media you find on the internet as easy to find, play, and interact with as the media stored locally on your memory card. Those of you familiar with Kinoma Player EX on the Palm OS are going to be pleased to hear that all the functionality of the PalmOS's player is here and then some."

I've seen a lot of software come and go on the Windows Mobile platform, but watching this video and reading about Kinoma leaves me with the impression that this is one of the most impressive media players I've ever seen. The functionality, and the blending of local and online content, is extremely impressive. From an audio playback standpoint, it's a shame so many device makers use miniUSB or 2.5mm headphone jacks - I hate having to use adaptors. Check out Kinoma's Web site for a trial download.

One thing that Kinoma doesn't seem to have a good grasp on though is getting the software onto the devices. Kinoma Play isn't available in any of our software stores at MobiHand or Handango, and when I downloaded the software directly from their Web site it was only a CAB file - normally I wouldn't mind a CAB file, but when I tried to install it I received an error on my Blackjack II: "Installation was unsuccessful. The program or setting cannot be installed because it does not have sufficient system permissions." I've installed two other programs via CAB files today, so I'm not sure why Kinoma Play won't install. Hopefully you'll have better luck than I did!

We've adopted a back-to-school theme for this contest, so to be in the running, simply make a post in this thread telling us how you'd use SpaceTime in an educational setting (or a commercial setting, if you're not a student or academic), and also the answer to "cos (0 degrees)", because we know you love number crunching.

You have until 11:59am (GMT) on Monday, September 1, 2008 to get your entries in. Winners will be announced the following week. Good luck!

Palm Quietly Pushes Nova Back A Few Months

Posted By: wraggster

Palm had originally planned to have devices ready to go as early as February 2009 running the new Nova operating system. It seems that date is now slipping as late as June 2009. The New York Times has an article on the Treo Pro and other efforts at Palm, and there was this passing mention of the OS, though not even its name "Nova" was mentioned.

"The real test of the new team’s leadership will come in the first half of next year. That is when Palm plans to announce a next generation of software - and a new device - which it hopes will make it easier for consumers to surf the Web and network with friends and colleagues."

As I've said before many times, Palm has never written an OS from the ground up. Palm OS 1-5 were all based on the Kadak developed kernel. True, Palm OS6 did see the light of day as an OS, but was never put on a single device for sale to the consumer. Nova will be based on Linux, but in all fairness, people have been putting Linux on PDAs since at least 2000 when some managed to get it running on the iPAQ 3600 series. Will Palm really be able to bring to market an OS based on Linux that will wow the consumer and save the brand, or will Palm become a device developer relying primarily on their Windows Mobile line of devices? I guess we'll know more by Q2 of 2009. By then, either leaks of forthcoming devices will be out, or the whole project will be delayed until later in the year.

Motorola Atila Ready to Conquer Non-Keyboard Phone Market?

Posted By: wraggster

"Another leaked Motorola handset? You bet! This time we've got the brother-in-law to the Motorola Alexander - no QWERTY keyboard - with a pretty decent spec sheet. This one is codenamed Atila, and if you haven't caught on to Motorola's code names for Windows Mobile devices, they are all named after great conquerors; Alexander, Atila, Ghenghis, etc. The Atila is actually the first Motorola device that will have tri-band UMTS/HSDPA. Finally, right? We're not sure on a release date, but here's an introduction of the specs, followed by the actual spec sheet..."

BoyGeniusReport has the goods on a possible upcoming Motorola phone. Unlike an earlier leaked report from BGR on the Motorola Alexander, there's no sliding QWERTY keyboard hiding underneath. Here are the specs from BGR:

• Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE
• Tri-band UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA (850MHz/1900MHz/2100MHz)
• 7.2Mbps HSDPA, 1.8Mbps HSUPA
• 1130mAh battery
• 2.8″ QVGA 240 x 320 screen
• Wi-Fi b/g
• Qualcomm 7201A chipset
• Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional

Ed will be pleased to note there's no Bluetooth listed. Still, it's a nice combo of acronymns. No release date yet.

Google Drops Bluetooth API From Android 1.0

Posted By: wraggster

Google has dropped Bluetooth and the GTalkService instant messaging APIs from the set of tools for Android 1.0, but says that handsets using the Android OS will work with other Bluetooth devices such as headsets. According to a post on the official Android developer blog, Google dropped the Bluetooth API from the mobile OS because 'we plain ran out of time.' The GTalkService API was removed because of security concerns that included the possibility of applications revealing more details about users than they might want to let out, such as their real names and e-mail addresses

Smartphone & Pocket PC Magazine Hangs Up Its Boots

Posted By: wraggster

"I have sad news. After 11 years, we will be publishing a final 2008 issue of Smartphone & Pocket PC magazine and then suspend publication! We are working hard to make it the best Windows Mobile issue ever, a keeper, a reference guide... It is with great regret I make this announcement. We are a very small, self-funded magazine publishing company. We did not make this decision lightly, especially after 11 years of issues. It has become harder and harder to grow our circulation over the past three years since Windows Mobile changed from being PDAs to being phones. Pocket PC manufacturers like HP used to work with us to offer their customers a free issue of our magazine in their packaging. The phone companies have not shown similar interest in working with us. The other business challenge has been the lack of advertising sponsorship from Microsoft, phone companies, and OEMs, despite our coverage of their products. In order for us to sell subscriptions at current low consumer magazine-type prices, we must have a stronger and growing circulation, and we much attract the large advertisers who benefit the most from our existence. Of course, the irony is that almost 20 million Windows Mobile units were sold this past Microsoft fiscal year. We think there is a great opportunity to continue the magazine in this high growth smartphone market for a more sophisticated publishing company or a funded entrepreneur."

After eleven amazing years, the folks at Smartphone & Pocket PC Magazine are suspending publication due to a lack of interest and sponsorship from a number of parties. For many years, I've had the pleasure of working with Hal Goldstein and his committed team in the Best Software Awards, and have appreciated their enormous level of dedication and enthusiasm shown toward the Windows Mobile platform and community. It's sad news, and on behalf of the team at Thoughts Media, I wish Hal and his team the very best in their endeavours. Of course, the door is still open; if you'd love to see Smartphone & Pocket PC Magazine continue on and have sponsorship ideas, you might want to contact Hal.

HTC Dream Gets Unconfirmed Specs (Decent CPU Power, Meager RAM)

Posted By: Shrygue

via Gizmodo US

Android Guys has an as-of-yet unconfirmed spec sheet on the HTC Dream (which they say is called the T1 on T-Mobile), supposedly one of the first Android phones to hit the market later this year. The most notable specs are the 528MHz Qualcomm 7201 CPU, which is a fairly decent processor as long as it's powering an OS that's not too bloated, 64MB RAM (kinda dinky), 1GB microSD card, 3.1-megapixel camera with no flash, decent audio and video codec support 3G, Quad-Band GSM, 802.11b/g, a 3.17-inch screen with 480x320 resolution and AIM/MSN/Yahoo/GTalk.

It also weighs 5.6 oz, but it's also syncable with Google Calendar and has Google StreetView with a built-in compass, so we can forgive its beefiness. We weren't super excited about the Dream before, but these details are getting us halfway there. Head over to Android Guys to get the full specs. We also darkened the lines on the image a bit to make it easier to see.

What I’ve Missed About the S60 Experience

Posted By: wraggster

After finally getting my thoughts on the iPhone 3G out into a blog post last week I felt it was finally time to go back to using a Nokia S60 device again. I’d really missed the S60 experience and I’ve wanted to try some of the new devices running the latest software (top of my list right now is the Nokia E71).

As has become the norm I posted my thought to Twitter and got this reply from Frank:

That got me thinking about what I really missed about the S60 experience while I was using the iPhone and here is what I came up with.

1) Video - It hasn’t always been the case but recently Video has become important to me. I love absorbing everything related to New Media and Social Media and the emergence of some interesting video-based services have got me really interested in video again. My favourite of these has to be Qik, a service which allows you to live-stream video directly from your device to the internet something I have regularly noticed I’d want to do in lots of situations recently. Other video services like Phreadz and Seesmic are on my radar too and video taken on your phone is the ideal way for me to dive in to their world.

2) Geo-Tagging - The easy way. The iPhone can Geo-Tag images but I just haven’t found a good way to upload that data to my preferred destination (Moblog). If I email it Apple strips out the location data and 3rd Party Apps also seem to have a problem retaining the data. On S60 devices this is just easier to do and I’ve never had problems with the data being stripped out. On top of that I really want to get back to using Sports Tracker (a better name is Life Tracker). Being able to upload that data and share it with others is pretty compelling and not something you can do with the iPhone yet.

3) Background Application - This is probably what I missed most and given that I normally have at least 3 apps going in the background when on an S60 device it’s hardy surprise. As I mentioned in my iPhone post this is something that I think really hinders the iPhone experience. A great example is Last.fm which i can use on an S60 device and let it run in the background while doing anything else with the device but on the iPhone I’m stuck in the App and if I go anywhere else the App is shut down. I’m sure that we’ll eventually see some iPhone Apps that are allowed to run in the background but until then this is a big winner for S60 and also Windows Mobile.

4) Bluetooth - Yes, I know the iPhone has Bluetooth but what can I do with it? I can’t send files to other phones or to my laptop using it. I can’t connect to any headset that I like or any other Bluetooth accessories that I might want to use. Bluetooth on the iPhone is totally toothless and there really is no good excuse as to why Apple have limited it so much. I had hoped that the iPhone 3G would have improved matters but as it hasn’t I have little confidence that we’ll see improvements in future iPhone hardware or software.

5) Tethering - I work away from home a lot and while WiFi is usually easy to find it’s good to know that I can always use my HSDPA phone as an internet connection if I ever get stuck. Unless of course I’m carrying an iPhone. Traditional tethering via cable or Bluetooth are missing from the iPhones arsenal which is surprising given that so many devices on the market support this, and not just Smartphones. Again when the iPhone 3G was announced and Apple indicated it was starting to aim at business user I hoped that tethering would be a new addition. Unfortunately it wasn’t and I doubt it will be added in future either. It’s also worth mentioning that if you use an S60 device there is the fantastic Joikuspot application that allows you to turn your phone into a WiFi hotspot, another thing I’ve really missed.

6) Copy/Paste - This one of those features that you might not realise is that important to you until you find yourself without it. I repeatedly found myself wishing the iPhone had the S60 pencil key in the month I was using the Apple device. On S60 devices it’s a joy to use (once you realise you can do it) especially moving text between different apps. This is by no means a vital feature but considering Apples great implementation of the screenshot feature (which could also be considered a minor addition) I hope it’s something they’ll throw in to a future update.

7) Options - Wasn’t sure how to title this one. Basically while I was using the iPhone I felt trapped having to do things the Apple way. I’ve already mentioned how closed the iPhone is in terms of Bluetooth, tethering and even Geo-Tagging. What I missed even more was being able to just plug in the phone and view its contents without having to use iTunes (which I loath) or iPhoto. I regularly use Linux and my daily PC right now is an Asus Eee 900 from which I can do nothing but charge my iPhone. With S60 you have far more options to interact with the device and load music, photos and other content and I miss that flexibility. I know this is to be expected because Apple have always had very closed environments and I’m sure there might be some benefits but for me as a power user nothing is more annoying.

Form Factor - With S60 you have a whole bunch of choice when it comes to form-factor. What do you prefer, Slider? Candybar? QWERTY? S60 devices cover them all, do them well and provide them at a variety of price-points. You also have your choice of different features. Love to take photos? Pick up and N82 which has a great camera and a proper flash. Want a work-horse that does everything? The N95-8GB will be your beast of choice. With the iPhone you’re stuck with the one option (I know there are 2 versions but you can only buy the 3G now) and if you don’t like touch screens or a large device you’re a bit stuck. While I know there are people out there that prefer to have less choice for me and I’m sure many others choice is important which is why the Mobile Device industry will always be fragmented.

9) Battery Life - A cheeky one and something I never thought I’d miss about S60 devices. Nokia S60 phones have aways had notorious battery life, especially the original N95. If you compare the specs the iPhone 3G should come out on top when it comes to battery. However when it came down to how long it lasted through regular use it fell short of the S60 battery performance. From what I’ve heard the latest S60 devices (bar the N96) have improved battery life so that should be an added boost when I buy a new Nokia phone. It’s also worth mentioning that, like every other mobile phone on the market, the Nokias have replaceable batteries.

So for all these reasons I’ll be moving on to a new S60 device as soon as I can. For now I have an E51 and E65 to keep me going. And the iPhone? Well I’ll certainly be using it every now and again to try out new apps and the new software updates. There certainly are aspects of the iPhone that I’ll miss, but that’s another post all together which I should put together by the end of the week, so stay tuned

Photoshop.com Going Mobile in September

Posted By: wraggster

"Adobe® Photoshop.com Mobile is the easiest way to upload, view, and share your photos online from your phone. All you need is a supported Windows Mobile phone and your Photoshop.com account ID. Photoshop.com Mobile beta will be available as a free download in September."

Adobe claims that Photoshop.com Mobile will only support the MOTO Q, Blackjack, and Treo 700/750 series, although we're willing to bet most other Windows Mobile devices will handle it just fine as long as Flash is installed. At any rate, we'll let you know the moment it's available.

Android Market: a user-driven content distribution system

Posted By: wraggster

When we talk to developers, a common topic is the challenge of getting applications in the hands of users. That's why today I'm happy to share early details of Android Market—an open content distribution system that will help end users find, purchase, download and install various types of content on their Android-powered devices. The concept is simple: leverage Google's expertise in infrastructure, search and relevance to connect users with content created by developers like you.

Developers will be able to make their content available on an open service hosted by Google that features a feedback and rating system similar to YouTube. We chose the term "market" rather than "store" because we feel that developers should have an open and unobstructed environment to make their content available. Similar to YouTube, content can debut in the marketplace after only three simple steps: register as a merchant, upload and describe your content and publish it. We also intend to provide developers with a useful dashboard and analytics to help drive their business and ultimately improve their offerings.

I also wanted to share some early details to help with planning your efforts so that you can be ready as our partners release the first Android-powered handsets. Developers can expect the first handsets to be enabled with a beta version of Android Market. Some decisions are still being made, but at a minimum you can expect support for free (unpaid) applications. Soon after launch an update will be provided that supports download of paid content and more features such as versioning, multiple device profile support, analytics, etc. Below are some screenshots that illustrate some of the security features and workflow.

With the addition of a marketplace, the Android ecosystem is becoming even more robust. I am incredibly energized by the support and amazing content I've seen so far. We will share more details as they are available and I look forward to working with many of you in the coming months.

S2U2 v1.20 - lock

Hey guys,

Although S2U2 is now reached v1.20, it doesn't mean it can run perfectly on your device. Thanks to different devices produced by different vendors. So, please test it before use it everyday, especially the CallerID function.

What is S2U2?
S2U2 (Slide2Unlock2) is a simple lock/unlock application which has the iPhone style slide unlocking. It can be used as a screensaver while you don't use your device. And it's has a CallerID function (but some devices may not work, so please try it first); S2P control plugin; and volume control.

HTC Dream Skinny Compared to iPhone?

Posted By: wraggster

"Attempts to keep the most hotly anticipated consumer electronics devices under wraps these days are getting more and more futile. It's hard enough for companies to control disgruntled employees and leaks in the international supply chain, stir in a giant government organization and things quickly unravel. Case in point: T-Mobile's HTC Dream, widely believed to be the world's first Android handset. After Engadget loosed the Dream from its FCC constraints on the 18th of August, HTC contacted the agency on the 19th with a request to use a less detailed diagram for the FCC label placement. Fortunately for us they complied, giving us what can only be construed as official measurements in the process. The newly unveiled 115 x 55-mm dimensions tell us that it beats the iPhone 3G in terms of length and width but is almost certainly thicker than the iPhone due to the Dream's sliding QWERTY"

Everybody has news on the Dream, whether you want to hear it or not. Engadget speculates repeatedly (here and here) on it's dimensions via FCC documents. And the above video with the Darth Vader like breathing? Well it's probably the lord of the Sith playing with a Dream, if you're to believe the hype surrounding it. I guess we'll know more in coming days, but at this rate I have to let Dream information sit in my inbox for a day or two before posting to make sure it's not changed, updated, debunked, or clarified. I wish this thing would just appear in the marketplace!

Microsoft SyncToy v2.0

Posted By: wraggster

"There are files from all kinds of sources that we want to store and manage. Files are created by our digital cameras, e-mail, cell phones, portable media players, camcorders, PDAs, and laptops. Increasingly, computer users are using different folders, drives, and even different computers (such as a laptop and a desktop) to store, manage, retrieve and view files. Yet managing hundreds or thousands of files is still largely a manual operation. In some cases it is necessary to regularly get copies of files from another location to add to primary location; in other cases there is a need to keep two storage locations exactly in sync. Some users manage files manually, dragging and dropping from one place to another and keeping track of whether the locations are synchronized in their heads. Other users may use two or more applications to provide this functionality. Now there is an easier way. SyncToy, a free PowerToy for Microsoft Windows, is an easy to use, highly customizable program that helps users to do the heavy lifting involved with the copying, moving, and synchronization of different directories. Most common operations can be performed with just a few clicks of the mouse, and additional customization is available without additional complexity. SyncToy can manage multiple sets of folders at the same time; it can combine files from two folders in one case, and mimic renames and deletes in another case. Unlike other applications, SyncToy actually keeps track of renames to files and will make sure those changes get carried over to the synchronized folder."

Android Market, Google's App Store, Will Not Require Approval For Applications

Posted By: Shrygue

via Gizmodo US

The Android Dev Blog today released some shots and details on the Android Market—the Android version of the iPhone's App Store. Stressing that it's a "market" (free, open, etc) rather than a "store," the Google folks have decided to not require an approval process for devs to have their applications listed, unlike Apple's mysterious black box of approval that even the developers still don't fully understand. Which is great news for Android devs, but could be quite a handful for Google.

Android Market builds in all of the similar functionalities found in Apple's version: providing the infrastructure to host apps in a centralized place, versioning and update control, and support for free and paid apps (although the pay apps will not be ready for version 1.0). Apple's model of a single, all-in-one app repository definitely makes sense over a Symbian or Blackberry approach, with apps scattered across the web. But where Apple has two phones to deal with, Android will eventually have hundreds, so the system will need to be all the more robust to not allow incompatible code that doesn't require prior approval to crash people's handsets. Still, iPhone developers have not been overly thrilled with Apple's development process, so this should be a relief for them.

Presenting the Winners of the Android Developer Challenge

Posted By: wraggster

Since we started the first Android Developer Challenge late last year, we all have been eager to see who the winners of $275,000 and $100,000 would be. All 50 applications that emerged from Round 1 of ADC I showed great promise, and these teams have been working intensely for the past several months to polish their apps for the final round.

Similar to round 1 we sent laptops preconfigured with the judging environment, emulator, and all entries to each of our seven judges. In this round, each judge reviewed all 50 applications, took collaborative notes and gave initial scores. Then, all judges met together over conference calls to discuss and debate these applications, finally coming to consensus on which applications should receive $275,000 and which should receive $100,000.

We're pleased to present all of the winners and finalists in our detailed ADC gallery. Peruse and enjoy — there are awesome applications and unique uses of the Android platform. We would like to congratulate the winners and thank all the entrants for their hard work!

PocketCAS 1.0.2 - a free Computer Algebra System for Windows Mobile

Posted By: wraggster

Hi guys,

I have developed an interface to xcas, a free Computer Algebra System, for Windows Mobile.

Let's have a look at its features (text and screenshots have been taken from http://pocketcas.com, by appointment of ... myself):

Solving advanced mathematical problems made easy

PocketCAS is a free interface to the open-source Computer Algebra System giac/xcas.
xcas enables you to quickly solve complex algebraic problems, e.g. symbolic and numeric integration and derivation of non-trivial functions, solving differential equations etc. It has also a huge support for problems of linear algebra, like solving linear equation systems, multiplying and inverting matrices, finding eigenvalues (and eigenvectors, of course) and much more. If you do statistics or number theory, you will like xcas' great functionality in those areas, too!

Built-in TeX output

PocketCAS has the option to automatically use the output of xcas to generate beautiful formula images using mimeTeX. Just enter an expression and you will get the result in the same formatting you would find in a mathematical textbook!

For example, other Computer Algebra Systems would output the following result to the command integrate(sin(x)*cos(x)):

(sin(x))^2/2

With PocketCAS, you will see the formula as a real image (image removed due to xda-dev's limitation to 4 images).

(this is VGA output, on your PDA it will look smaller and even smoother!)
Simple input method for faster solutions

PocketCAS contains a fully-customizable, easy to use mathematical keyboard for quick input of most mathematical functions. You can even assign images to displayed on a button rather than mere text!

Therefore, PocketCAS is as simple to use as a pocket calculator, but provides you with the functionality of a full-blown CAS - in your pocket, wherever you take your PDA with you!

Missing a function or a macro? Simply add it to the keyboard which is stored in a human-editable XML-file!

It can be considered as an add-on to other programs which provide the User Interface, an 'In Call Locker'

The locking can be activated at the following events:

New Mobile Portal in v2 Beta: KeyToss

Posted By: wraggster

"KeyToss mobile is extremely customizable, and similar in concept to iGoogle for mobile, but it's got a lot of cool and unique features, including: the ability to search using dozens of different search tools (e.g., Google, Amazon, IMDb, UPS Package Tracking, Acronym Finder, Dictionary.com, Wikipedia) from one search bar; local searches on Google Local, Yelp, and yellowpages.com based on your stored location; RSS and Atom newsfeeds with mobile-optimized links; localized links (so you don't have to enter your location when you click on Fandango, for example); the ability to organize modules on multiple pages; and file transfers between PC and phone. You can also get sports scores for your favorite (US-based) teams, weather, stock quotes, etc. And you can manage your site from your desktop at www.keytoss.com."

Mobile data is great to have, but while some sites either scale nicely or offer a seperate mobile version, others can crash your browser as you see "heavy" entry pages. A mobile portal is a convenient way to be able to pull frequently requested data into one location. Speaking of location, KeyToss will access location-aware data without requiring GPS so you won't have to re-enter a zipcode on some sites. WapReview compared it very favorably to iGoogle. You can check out a desktop representation or visit the site directly on your smartphone or other mobile device at http://m.keytoss.com. For those that use a mobile portal, does KeyToss offer enough unique features for you to switch?

The context of the discussion is basically 'competitors to the iPhone,' which is a little aggravating because, let's face it, the iPhone and Windows Mobile aren't always going for the same demographic. Some of the smartphones shown off: HTC Diamond, HTC Touch Pro, and the BlackJack II."

Samsung Omnia i900 Reviewed by MobileTechReview

Posted By: wraggster

"The Omnia (Latin for "all") in fact has it all: a WQVGA haptic touch screen, quad band unlocked GSM, Euro-only 3G, GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, FM radio, DivX certification, a 5 megapixel camera, 624MHz CPU, 8 or 16 gigs of storage and an SDHC microSD card slot. For those of us in the US, the Euro-only 3G takes "all" down one notch. The Omnia works fine on both T-Mobile and AT&T in the US, but you're stuck with EDGE for data. Really, it's hard to imagine that Samsung's flagship PDA phone leaves out triband HSDPA. No carrier offers the Omnia in the US; instead it's sold by online importers for approximately $700 (the 16 gig model sells for approximately $60 more than the 8 gig model). Prices may come down when the phone isn't so new and hot."
