Finally, a piece of news we can actually do something with. AT&T today announced its pricing structure for the next iteration of Apple's iPhone -- which you can plunk down money for come 8 am, July 11th. There's not much that's surprising here -- new customers and those eligible for an upgrade will be able to nab the phone for $199 (8GB) or $299 (16GB), while "early upgraders" will have to fork over $399 or $499, all with a two year contract and $18 upgrade fee, of course. The telco says a no-commitment version of the phone will be available for $599 and $699, though it looks like that will come after the initial launch. AT&T appears to be leaning pretty heavily towards the all-in unlimited plans, but there are options if you don't want to go that route. We've sorted out the basics after the break, and included AT&T's "iReady" video -- certainly good for a few chuckles.

If you've been scouring the dictionary for sour grapes, chances are you'll find Ivan Seidenberg's picture. Verizon Communications' chairman and chief executive recently sat down for an interview with Financial Times, and while he spent the vast majority of his time boasting of just how amazing Verizon is, he did stop to remark about Cupertino ever so briefly. Granted, he did start off by admitting that Apple was a "great company," but that didn't stop him from pillorying the iPhone as well as Dear Leader himself. He actually accused the interviewer of "declaring [Apple] a winner before it had earned it on the field," suggesting that the iPhone wouldn't become a mass-market handset simply because the next iteration will be subsidized. He also stated that "Mr. Jobs had no monopoly on innovation," and took the conversation even further off track by blurting that "Steve Jobs eventually will get old." At least Keystone knows where to find its next bitter beer face, right?

Speaking to MTV Multiplayer, the developer of such epics as Mass Effect and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic confirmed that it is looking into games of a much smaller (physical) scale. Specifically, BioWare co-CEO Greg Zeschuk states that he finds Apple's iPhone "intriguing" as a games platform. Mind you, he's not saying development is underway, but he is a fan.
"Something that's as big a cultural and technical success as the iPhone is something you've really got to take a close look at," explains Zeschuk, adding that, "We've got a lot of folks looking at it." Zechuk's statements come just a few days after the project lead on BioWare's Nintendo DS RPG, Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, revealed that the company is also investigating Wii and PSP dvelopment. Now BioWare just needs to look into developing for those LCD games you see at mall kiosks and it'll have all bases covered.

Daaaamn, talk about clout. If DigiTimes' sources are correct, then Samsung, the world's primary supplier of flash memory, just told its non-Apple customers to suck it in favor of a "large batch of orders" it received from Cupertino. The order is said to be for 50-million "8Gb-equivalent" (we assume they mean gigabyte, or GB) NAND chips "mainly for use in Apple's iPhone." This order follows a June procurement for 25 million of the same chips. In response, Samsung has reportedly told its lesser customers that it would "sharply cut supply" of NAND to them while the order is being fulfilled. The shortage is compounded by Samsung lowering its manufacturing output in April and May in an attempt to reduce oversupply. Still, if these numbers are true (they seem high and DigiTimes can be hit or miss with its Apple sources) then the world is about to be awash in iPhone 3Gs come July 11th.
Update: We've given the Gigabits vs. Gigabytes a bit more thought. If it's 50 million 8Gbit chips as stated, they would divide evenly across about 2.1 million 8GB iPhone 3Gs plus another 2.1 million 16GB models. A reasonable production run for Apple's global launch but an order which shouldn't be so taxing on Samsung's production capability. Something doesn't add up.

You may disagree, but we think this MacBook Air keyboard mod for the iPhone looks super neat. The package installs directly from Installer.app and gives your on-screen board the black separated look that the standard MacBook and the MacBook Air both feature. It's just cosmetic, and doesn't affect your typing performance in any way—unless of course you type faster when you see black plastic. It also uninstalls without destroying your phone, which is a plus. Grab it now, but you might have to add this repository (http://planet-iphones.com/repository/) first.

So we heard from a very reliable source that mobile user interface guru Matias Duarte -- who you may know as the man behind the Sidekick and Helio UI / user experiences -- actually left Helio late last year to join up with Palm. Although no announcement was made, we hear he and his gang of designers jumped ship (well before Helio completely flooded) to take on the monumental task of designing the UI for Palm's next-gen mobile OS (aka "Palm OS 2.0 or II"). We got in touch with Palm, who confirmed that he's under the company's employ, and his resume online now lists him as "Senior Director, Human Interface and User Experience" doing "Something new..." since September 2007.
Of course, expectations should be pretty high -- Palm's only been promising this supposedly game-changing OS since around 2004, and the company's reputation and pedigree is (or at least it used to be) in groundbreaking mobile UI design. But this news also kind of makes us wonder: if they didn't have a killer UI and user experience team already in place and long-since working their asses off by late 2007, exactly how far along are they on this thing, anyway?

july 4 was the date, but hey, what's the harm in opening up the floodgates just a handful of hours early? Get past the lack of 3G, EDGE, camera, and a rock-solid set of tested, commercialized apps, and open-source phoning nirvana can now be yours for $399 on the plastic.

Google's brand new Gtalk webapp for the iPhone is as crappy as I expected it would be. It has a nice design, and sending messages was easy, but at the end of the day it's still running in Safari—which means if you get a call you are signed out of chat. And unlike other web-based IM apps, Gtalk doesn't work in the background, so interruptions as simple as going to the home screen sign you out too. Also, there are no preference settings, so you are stuck looking at your whole contact list, online and off. Gtalk's AIM support is also curiously absent from this release. In short, this program sucks. If you're looking for a solid IM solution before the App store opens, I strongly recommend Agile Mobile's AM client recently released on Installer, which I've been playing around with.

If you want to get your iPhone App into the App Store in time for the July 11 launch, you'll have to submit it by July 7. That's next Monday. If you're one of those kids who always does their homework at the last second, we suspect there's going to be less BBQ and more "OMGWTFBBQ we're not done!" this weekend. And there's no copying off the smart kid now either, so we don't want to see Super Monkey Ball and Super Orangutan Ball turn up next Friday. Of course you don't absolutely have to be there at launch, but there's a much higher chance of more press coverage if you are. Don't forget to look at our App Contest as well.

While many people are looking for ways to save money when purchasing an iPhone by weighing up contracts versus PAYG, we do not recommend putting your faith, or cash, into the above iPhone. It may look like the real deal but it's a damn fine fake from China.
The Chinese are masters at faking it, taking just about any technology gadget and fabricating excellent looking doubles. It will probably short circuit or burst into flames after a few days but at least it looked good and cost peanuts.
The photo above was sent into a forum by a Canadian user who's Dad bought it in China recently and who then encountered some 'problems' activating his new present through iTunes. The fake is a very good one and despite some minor differences - measurements are a bit off and there's a USB instead of a dock connector - the icons are all there, including an odd penguin-one for launching a Chinese game.
The packaging also looks authentic. No idea what Dad paid but it's bound to have cost a fraction of the real iPhone and, will probably last a fraction of the time too. Dad bought three of them as presents, making Dad (a) innocent tourist shopping mug or (b) a real cheapskate. See more shots below.

It seems that our obsession with hacking the current iPhone and refusing to pay for expensive contracts is about to be punished as the UK is only going to get very 'limited' stock of the new iPhone 3G.
A deep throat inside one iPhone retailer told Electricpig that just 15% of the iPhones sold since the last price drop have been put on the O2 network - the rest have been hacked and are on rival networks. Apple, the source said, is going to teach UK users a lesson by restricting the number of iPhone 3G devices when it launches on July 12.
The 16GB devices will be the worst hit. Oh, and another bit of bad news, is that the source claims the PAYG iPhone 3G will cost £349, not the more attractive £299 that appeared briefly on O2's web site. That would put the UK pricing more in line with what other European nations will be paying.
Maybe that fake Chinese iPhone isn't so bad after all. Still, it may all be shameless scaremongering since what phone company deliberately wants to sell less phones?

So we heard some really over-eager folks have decided to get a jump on the iPhone 3G line -- a really, really big jump. Obviously, we had to head down and see if it was true... and it is. Right now, about ten people have started a line outside of Apple's flagship store on 5th Avenue in New York. Word is that the family at the head of the queue are attempting to break some kind of record which involves their baby -- which kind of sounds a little intense if you ask us. On the other hand, you didn't hear Greg Packer complaining, right? We're going to wrangle some of these cats for an interview and video, so stay tuned! For right now, check some more pics after the break.

Well, it looks like Group Sense's once mighty line-up of Palm OS-based handsets has finally been shown the door with the whole lot now replaced by a single, Linux-based device. From the looks of it though, it doesn't seem like the new handset is about to work any wonders for the company, with the "real smart" Xplore WF100 boasting only a 1.5-inch 128 x 128 display, and such exciting features as a built-in antenna, speed dial, and "call shock." No word on price or availability just yet, but we're guessing most folks won't have much trouble containing their excitement over this one.

While we still don't think the iPhone App Store makes the do-everything cell phone a threat to the DS, we are impressed with the growing list of big-name franchises being ported to the system. We can now amend that list to include the Bomberman series, with Hudson's with the recent announcement of Bomberman Touch: Legend of the Mystic Bomb.
A video trailer (embedded below the jump) shows what looks like a transparent, touch-screen d-pad placed over the on-screen action to control Bomberman, sort of like the interface for the earlier iPhone PlayStation emulator . According to Hudson, the game will include "classic Bomberman powerups and original special items" and take advantage of "the unique iPhone / iPod touch interface of flicking, tapping, and tilting with a built-in accelerometer." No word on a multiplayer mode, but with the iPhone's Wi-Fi capabilities, a local wireless option would hopefully be a no-brainer.
Bomberman touch joins water-based puzzle game Aqua Forest and the always lucrative Sudoku in Hudson's announced line-up for the iPhone.

Windows Mobile users have had to look on in envy as people poked and drew penises on their friends' walls with dedicated apps for BlackBerry and Palm, wistfully hoping that joy could one day be their own. And now it is! Apparently the first full Facebook app for Windows Mobile, FriendMobilizer will let you do all of the basics like stalk your newly single friend, send messages or ignore requests from people you've never met. It's a lot greener (and uglier) than the Centro's app (which I like a lot) but hey, beggars can't be choosers. And I mean, you guys were begging for this, right?

Hello everyone,
Sorry for the lack of updates for the last couple of weeks, we have been adding 2 very requested features in to the iControlPad which we think will make the unit near perfect in terms of what it can do. We will be releasing those details later this month.
We will be emailing interested distributors this week to gather some details.
As soon as we have a finished mass production pad we will put up a youtube video

The notion that the UK might be punished for having so many iPhone users with hacked phones did seem a little far fetched last week when we covered the claims of one UK retail insider, but today it's looking likely that the iPhone 3G is certainly not arriving as originally thought.
Today, it's been confirmed that the pay-as-you-go (PAYG) - or Pay & Go - iPhone 3G has been put on the backburner for the UK and will not ship later this week on July 11.
The O2 site now lists the device with the message: "Pay & Go will be available later this year". More ominously, an official statement from Carphone Warehouse says the PAYG iPhone 3G will arrive "in time for the Christmas period". That's a bit of a blow for those hoping to use a 3G iPhone on their own networks.
Both O2 and Carphone Warehouse have opened up pre-ordering for a 'limited time' before it starts selling to Joe Public on Friday morning and, to entice buyers, they are promising courier delivery on Friday. Carphone claims that that pre-registrations for the 3G device are 10 times higher than they were for the original iPhone.
And where is the white one that other countries will be getting?

To be fair, Continental Mobiles' diamond-encrusted Nokia N95 is a real bargain at £10,000 ($19,813) when compared to Amosu's £12,000 alternative, but seriously, real richies should be holding off for the evolutionary N96, anyway. For those with enough cash to care, this particular handset / status symbol packs a Sterling silver front-panel stacked with "4.42ct of brilliant-cut, VS1 quality, color G-H, naturally mined diamonds." If you're craving one, you'd better get your order in now, as it takes the British craftspeople crazy enough to sell these things three full weeks to whip one up.

Continuing this day of iPhone 3G impropriety, the Boy Genius has somehow secured himself a brand-spanking-new iPhone 3G, and has unboxed it for all the world to see. First off, our condolences to the AT&T or Apple employee who will probably lose their job over this one, and then a tip of the hat to BGR for pulling off such a daring stunt. The pictures, however, should be less exciting (since we've been seeing a lot of these today) -- still, nice to know what you're about to get into!

You probably saw this one coming, but with that massive slew of countries and partners Apple has wrangled for the new iPhone launch, that July 11th street date was bound to be neglected. So here you have it, courtesy of the french blog Gadget O'Mac, an iPhone 3G on display in a shop in Switzerland. While the shots may be blurry, we at least get to see this thing in the hands of someone other than an Apple employee, and coupled with that Portuguese leak, this should thoroughly whet your appetite for Friday.

Apple's apparently so fed up with the high pricing that Rogers is shoving into Canadian iPhone owners' faces that there will be no iPhone 3Gs sold at Apple Stores in Canada this Friday. This follows up Apple's previous action of diverting stock from Canada to Europe, and really sets the tone that they're unhappy with Rogers' $60 for 150 minutes, 75 SMS messages and 400MB data plan. So what's the deal? Canadians who still want one will have to line up early to get one of the 10-20 units per store that Rogers is getting. If we were you, we'd stay home and wait for Rogers to admit defeat, stop slapping its customers in the face and lower its prices

Just a day after O2's pre-ordering Web site crashed under the pressure of UK shoppers wanting an iPhone 3G, the company has admitted that in-store numbers are going to be low.
In an email bombshell to one customer, in response to his complaint over the rubbish pre-ordering service, Stephen Shurrock, sales director at O2, wrote:
"Demand was at 13,000 orders per second. Frankly, we have to admit we just weren't prepared for this unprecedented level of demand. No website is. The next opportunity to get an iPhone will be when the device goes on sale in the high street on 11th July. O2 and Carphone Warehouse stores will be taking new orders and upgrade orders. Apple stores will only be taking new customer contracts. The approach on Friday will also be on a first come first served basis. The amount of devices will vary depending on the store but will be on average a few dozen iPhones in each O2 or CPW store.
We are expecting early queues and, like the online site, are expecting to sell out very quickly. Apple stores will have more devices. We will be receiving deliveries from Apple roughly once a week for the foreseeable future but it will be several weeks before stocks increase. We will release stock updates for the online shop as they become available.
Unfortunately, [Apple] have only been able to supply a small proportion of the number of phones we asked for, because they are launching simultaneously in 22 countries. We are confident that over time we will start to get sufficient volume to meet demand, but it is likely that stock will be in very short supply for some weeks to come."
A "few dozen"? A "few dozen" in any given store is pathetic. I see quite a few cases of iPhone Rage coming on this Friday.-Martin Lynch

We just learned that AT&T's policy of allowing current iPhone owners a subsidized upgrade—even though they're only as most one year into their two-year contracts—quite literally applies to current iPhone owners. That means that if you sold your iPhones recently in order to raise money for the new one, you might be out of luck. And by out of luck, we mean you have to pay the unsubsidized price ($399 for 8GB and $499 for 16GB) in order to upgrade to the iPhone 3G, not the $199 and $299 you thought you were going to pay. Let us explain.
We've confirmed from an AT&T rep that if you aren't using the iPhone, then by definition you aren't an iPhone customer. That makes you a regular AT&T customer with regular upgrade qualifications. How does AT&T know whether or not you're using the iPhone currently? Well, when you stick your old SIM into a new phone, they can detect exactly what you're using even if you haven't switched your plan to something else besides the iPhone plan. Bottom line is, you should go to AT&T and use their eligibility checker to see if you qualify. If you're really lucky, you only sold your phone recently and you haven't gotten around to sticking your SIM into something else.

For those folks who don't mind -- nay, who strongly prefer -- a terminal screen on their smartphone, we know you've already thrown down the plastic on OpenMoko's FreeRunner. If you're going insane waiting to get your hands on it, what better to do than read through a remarkably thorough writeup detailing the user interface and all the goop behind the pretty scenes that makes this thing tick? Oh, and if you're just now getting up the courage to see what the brouhaha is all about, you've chosen the perfect time to get schooled. See that read link? Hit it.

PopCap Games, the leading developer and publisher of casual games, today announced its Bejeweled 2 game for iPhone and iPod touch will be available beginning today from the new Apple App Store. Nearly five million users have already played the web app version of Bejeweled since its debut last summer, and hundreds of millions more have played the PC, online and console versions. Consumers have enjoyed more than six billion hours of the Bejeweled franchise across more than a dozen platforms from iPods to seatbacks on leading airlines.
“With the launch of Bejeweled 2 for iPhone, PopCap further strengthens its relationship with Apple to support the world’s most popular handheld devices,†noted Andrew Stein, director of mobile platforms at PopCap. “We’ve developed a winning strategy of taking our most popular, top-selling titles and optimizing them specifically to take advantage of a range of next-generation mobile devices like the iPhone. In launching PopCap’s first iPhone-native game, we continue to deliver the best mobile gaming content on any platform.â€
With Bejeweled 2 for iPhone, PopCap is bringing all the addictive gameplay of the original in an iPhone-native version that has been fully optimized and enhanced to support iPhone 2.0 software and iPhone 3G. The game will be available for just $9.99 from Apple’s App Store on iPhone and iPod touch or at www.itunes.com/appstore/
Tuned specifically for the iPhone, Bejeweled 2 offers touch screen support with intelligence to determine which gem a player meant to touch (select), even when the player hasn’t used precise finger strokes to “hit†the second gem perfectly. Additionally, the game will use the accelerometer to detect orientation and automatically shift between vertical and landscape modes depending on how the user is holding the device.
PopCap’s leadership role in mobile gaming is underscored by its growing line-up of popular titles for the handheld market, including Chuzzle™ Mobile, Bookworm™ Mobile and the upcoming Peggle™ Mobile - the first mobile games that PopCap developed and is distributing directly. Bejeweled and Zuma™, two of PopCap’s most popular games, have also been runaway successes on game-capable iPods since their introduction on those devices last year. Peggle, introduced for iPod in late 2007, has also enjoyed critical and commercial success, and is the highest-rated game for iPod based on customer rankings at iTunes.com.

CubicMan Deluxe is a fun and addictive puzzle game. The aim of the game is to roll a cube to stand upright on the destination point. It sounds simple but the 80 unique puzzles will give you hours and hours of challenge and good fun!
CubicMan was first released for the Jailbroken iPhone/iPod Touch on ModMyiFone's repository and the response was overwhelming! We made lots of improvements to the game and brought it over to the official SDK. We are very excited to see it finally available on Apple App Store today.

via Washington Post
The gaming industry came out early and strongly in favor of the new features the iPhone brought to the scene just over a year ago. Developers constantly chatted about how eager they were to build applications for the device, but had to wait seven months before Apple ( NSDQ: AAPL) announced plans to offer its software development kit and launch an App Store where publishers could sell their work. mocoNews caught up with Sega Mobile VP Linda Chaplin today to talk about the iPhone's impact on the mobile gaming space and what it could spell for the future from other device makers. Here's some highlights from the interview:
-- Impact on wireless industry:"We refer to the iPhone as the first version of mobile 2.0 ? I just think it's going to change our industry," Chaplin said. "It's been fantastic for the mobile industry as a whole. I think it has awakened the other hardware partners to want to do something more innovative. It's fantastic for us."
-- Evolution in mobile gaming capabilities:"We're thrilled we can make more unique and exciting games." Most mobile games in Sega's catalog have four or five levels, while the publisher's first title brought to the iPhone, Super Monkey Ball, has 110 levels of play.
-- App Store as sole distribution point and Apple's revenue share model:"We were a little bit limited with the type of value chain that we have been subject to in the past and it's tough. This is a much more fair revenue split ? we look forward to a much more publisher positive revenue split."
More thoughts on content discovery and features yet to come, after the jump?
-- Discoverability on the iPhone: The device has brought content providers an entirely revamped opportunity to be found in the gauntlet of mobile content floating around. "It's fantastic for discovery of content." It also opens up the playing field. "Let's face it, it's been really tough on discoverability and the ability to find content on the carrier deck ? we just weren't able to tap into the masses because they couldn't find the content."
-- Still to come:"I think that we can still make it even better." The iPhone's accelerometer, for instance, "it's good for some types of games, but not great for others ? that's not something you can use in every type of game." What Chaplin would really like to see from the next leapfrog device is a physical d-pad: "There are so many unique things we can do ? there's so much out there that can be discovered ?there's nothing but excitement."

It's only 4pm ET and the iPhone 3G has already had a pretty rough go of it, with most customers forced to wait for Apple's activation servers to get back online and render their devices operational. AT&T just told us that the servers are back online, though, and that activations are occuring for 3G customers -- we're guessing that means first-gen upgraders are seeing things work as well. Lines are still killer right now, but now that the servers are back up, let's hope the chaos subsides a bit. We'll be filling in stock / line situations worldwide after the break as they come in, let us know what's up by you in comments or email iphone AT engadget DAWT com!
Update: Most AT&T stores are out of stock -- if you must have an iPhone today, it looks like an Apple store is the only way to go. Have fun in line!
NYC:
Cube, 4:12pm ET: Line is two to three hours, they don't anticipate running out of stock.
Soho, 4:18pm ET: Line is three hours long, stock situation is looking good.
14th Street, 4:34pm ET: 4 hour (!) line, "plenty of phones," don't think they'll run out, surprised to see that the line hasn't died down.
Chicago:
Apple store on Michigan, 4pm ET: Three hour line, "We have plenty in stock."
AT&T on State: Sold out. We're double checking. Yep, out of stock.
SF:
Downtown, 4:22pm ET: Two hour line, "Quite possible" it'll run out of stock, in stock right now.
Belgium:
All of 148 Mobistar stores and 30 Apple premium retail stores are out of stock. [Thanks, David.]
Canada:
Rogers flagship in Montreal: Sold out.
Rogers in Toronto: Sold out. [Thanks, Jonathan]
Quebec (city), Quebec (province), 4:54pm ET: Sold out about everywhere of 16GB, but most still have 8GB. Called at least 12 places. [Thanks, blirette]
England:
5:05pm ET: O2 and Carphone Warehouse both mostly sold out. [Thanks, Hugo]
Illinois:
Northbrook Apple store, 2:10pm ET: One hour wait, no word on stock.
Old Orchard Apple store, 2:15pm ET: 100+ people in line, still in stock.
Oakbrook Apple store, 2:30pm ET: two hour line, "plenty" in stock.
Mississippi:
All AT&T stores in Southern Mississippi are sold out. [Thanks, Logan]
Missouri:
St. Louis, MO, 5:34pm ET: All ATT stores out by 10am. Both Apple stores are in stock, with 5 hour lines apiece. Word is more people than stock. [Thanks, Omar]
New York:
Eastview Mall Apple store, 4:45pm ET: One hour line, out of 16GB phones, "limited" 8GB left, those at end of line likely won't get one. [Thanks, zak]
North Carolina:
Crabtree Valley Mall, Raleigh, 5:05pm ET: 300 - 400 deep, 3-4 hour wait, "might" have enough for tonight.
Southpoint in Durham, 5:05pm ET: 200 - 300 in line, 2 - 3 hour wait, should have enough for those in line right now, but could sell out tonight.

It's hard to think of any other device that's enjoyed the level of exposure and hype that Apple found in the launch of the first iPhone. Who could forget it? Everyone got to be a gadget nerd for a day; even those completely disinterested in technology seemed to come down with iPhone fever. But the original device was still far from perfect: its limited capabilities (especially in the 3G department), high price of entry, and the small number of countries in which it was available kept many potential buyers sidelined. Until now -- or so Apple hopes.
The wireless industry is a notoriously tough nut to crack, and it's become pretty clear that the first iPhone wasn't about total domination so much as priming the market and making a good first impression with some very dissatisfied cellphone users. With the iPhone 3G, though, Apple's playing for keeps. Not only is this iPhone's Exchange enterprise support aiming straight for the heart of the business market, but the long-awaited 3rd party application support and App Store means it's no longer just a device, but a viable computing platform. And its 3G network compatibility finally makes the iPhone welcome the world over, especially after Cupertino decided to ditch its non-traditional carrier partnerships in favor of dropping the handset price dramatically. $200? We're still a little stunned.
So now that Apple finally stands poised for an all out war on cellphone-makers everywhere, will the iPhone 3G stand up to the competition -- and higher expectations than ever? Read on for our full review.
Update: Updated with some more battery tests. So far we're not that impressed.

Listen up children, we've got a story to tell. It's scary and exciting and might just turn your iPod touch to fairy dust if you're not careful. The 2.0 firmware is reportedly leaked (and thus cash-free) to those of you daring enough to try. We've been contacted by a dozen netizens who claim to confirm the authenticity. However, at least one tipster reports their iPod touch getting "bricked doing it from pc but mac restore worked fine." What's more, we can't find the file in Apple's XML. Still, most say it "works like a dream," installing goodies from the App Store without problems. While the original download source is now 404, we're sure you can figure out other ways of locating "iPod1,1_2.0_5A345_Restore.ipsw." Ready, go. One more pic after the break.

So we can't help but notice that Apple still hasn't officially released iPhone software 2.0 for first-gen iPhones, even though most self-respecting gadget freaks have pulled it from the direct download links that popped up earlier. Since the file was hosted and available on Apple's servers around the time it was expected for release, it seemed safe to assume that it was legit -- and indeed, it (for the most part) works fine and plays well with the newly-live App Store. But a few of us here have had persistent problems on our first-gen iPhones: interface lag, crashing apps, hard resets, you name it. On top of that, we're hearing whispers that the .ipsw in question was meant only for 3G phones and not first-gen units -- and bizarrely, the build number of what we've got is 5A347, while our launch iPhone 3G is running build 5A345 on them. So until Apple stops being, well, Apple, and clears this all up, we're putting it to you: how are things going? Any problems, or smooth sailing? Happy you took the early plunge? Let us know in comments!

There it is, the new freebie from Apple which turns your iPhone or iPod touch into a remote control. It works with Apple TV and iTunes over the WiFi network to play, pause, skip and shuffle your songs stored in your iTunes library. You get access to playlists, album art (displayed in the Remote app), control over AirTunes speakers, and the ability to search your entire library. No video support apparently but free is free and 1.0 is 1.0.
Update: Looks like Apple has updated Apple TV to 2.1 with support for the new remote app, along with support for MobileMe. Get it via your Apple TV's Update Software feature.
Update 2: You can control playback of iTunes videos on your PC or Mac well -- a sceenshot of the video appears on the iPhone.

"Super Monkey Ball offers consumers a whole new way to interact with a handheld game – this time with just a tilt of the device,†said Simon Jeffery, president and COO of SEGA of America. “While remaining true to the look and feel of the popular franchise, Super Monkey Ball for the iPhone OS has been designed to take advantage of the three-axis accelerometer, creating a very natural and direct correlation between the actions of the player and the gameplay. The result is an extremely accessible, imaginative and fun gaming experience.â€
In Super Monkey Ball, players control one of the four monkeys from the Super Monkey Ball franchise – AiAi, MeeMee, Baby and Gongon. With each monkey inside of a transparent ball, players must tilt the device to roll the monkey through 110 different stages, all while overcoming a number of obstacles such as gaps, slopes, narrow ledges and moving platforms. With a pinpoint control mechanism, players will simply tilt and turn the device to maneuver their monkey, accelerating and decelerating as they make their way through the colorfully animated world. With five different worlds and three gamplay modes – Main Game, Instant Play and Practice Mode – Super Monkey Ball brings next-generation console gaming to the iPhone.

Hudson Soft Co., Ltd. today announced its ground-breaking game AQUA FOREST will be available on the Apple App Store at launch today, priced at just $7.99. AQUA FOREST is the first commercial product to use OctaveEngine Casual, the 2D multi-physics engine designed by Prometech Software, for the development of casual games. The App Store will be available tomorrow on iPhone and iPod touch or at www.itunes.com/appstore/
There are two modes in the game: Puzzle mode with a water and ecology motif and Free mode in which users can create anything they wish using the game’s tools. Puzzle mode has five levels, each of which has ten stages, for a total of fifty stages. As each puzzle is solved, the tree in the background will grow gradually. In Free mode, users will experience a whole new world of drawing. Using real physics, graphics created using the game’s tools will come to life as soon as they are drawn on the touch screen.
All puzzles featured in this application have one common theme: moving the water on the screen of the iPhone or iPod touch. The gameplay is easily accessible so that a wide range of users will be able to enjoy the puzzles. For example, in one puzzle, users must figure out how to catch water drops falling from a tree using a container. To move the water, users must use two of the unique features of iPhone: the accelerometer and the innovative Multi-Touch user interface. Using the accelerometer, users can tilt their devices to move water, and using the touch screen, draw with the game’s tools, including a pen, knife, eraser or more, in order to eliminate the obstacles or to draw walls to direct water to the goal.
In Free mode, users can choose from physical properties, such as water, fire, gel and rubber, to draw using various tools, such as drag, move, brush, pencil, and an eraser. Based on the physical properties used, drawings will move in real time as water splashes, fire burns, and so on.
Using the abilities of OctaveEngineTM Casual combine user actions with simultaneous physics calculations, AQUA FOREST provides ingenious interactive entertainment never seen before.

Macrumors has a useful post on how you can upgrade (downgrade, technically) from the leaked "iPhone1,2" firmware to the official "iPhone1,1" firmware issued early this morning. The leaked firmware was intended to only for use with iPhone 3G before it got out to the masses. In short, you need to download the correct firmware, and hold down the option key when you check for firmware updates in iTunes, allowing you to pick the file you want to install.

The iPhone 3G may be here, but what we're really excited about is the iPhone 2.0 software update. Only some people really need faster browsing and slightly better location services, but everyone can use the new features in the OS. Now that we've gotten chance to go through all that updated functionality—as well as a good chunk of apps, MobileMe and Exchange—we've only got one question left. Is iPhone 2.0 so good that you don't even need to upgrade to an iPhone 3G? It depends. But if I was forced to choose between an iPhone 3G barren of apps and the slower original with them, I'd go for the apps.

As you can see in the video, MobileMe push mail is now active, fully operative, and perfectly armed. My iPhone is now getting all email in real time, both over a Wi-Fi connection and using a cellphone network. I even use EDGE—not 3G—and a non-official carrier on roaming. So far, not a single problem. Bad news, RIM: BlackBerry is dead, dead, dead. Dead

f you hadn't heard, hundreds of people were turned away from Apple Stores last night, iPhone 3G-less. However, being gluttons for punishment -- and having nothing to do over the weekend -- they've returned in droves to Apple Stores, with reports of lines longer than 200 people stretching out from The Cube, Apple Store Chicago (pictured) and even a store in Durham, NC. Apple offered up vouchers last night, at least at some stores, to anyone still waiting in line, so those folks can show up whenever and jump the line for a phone -- about 30 of them are lined up at The Cube currently. If you don't mind you can let us know in tips what the current status on the line / stock is at your local Apple or AT&T store is, and we'll try to keep track of this mayhem through the weekend. Good luck out there!

So many of you are probably still in your jammies, reveling in the afterglow of yesterday's purchase, repeatedly opening Maps on your glossy new iPhone 3G and watching in exaggerated wonderment as your location is determined with frightening speed and accuracy. Others might be standing in a line snaking hundreds of bodies long into your friendly local Apple Store, reading this post from the comfort of your Motorola RAZR V3 and realizing that these are some of the last moments you'll be using a physical keypad. Still others are bemused by the fuss -- but whatever your stance on the phone, it's pretty hard to ignore the buzz that's floating around in the aftermath of day zero. Here are some of the goings-on we're tracking:
The masses of humanity continue to collect. Massive stock shortages don't seem to be an issue (yet), but patience is not a virtue we hold dear to our hearts, so we really can't blame these people. Some buyers are reporting a yellow tint to their screens -- probably not enough to notice without another unit side-by-side for comparison, but real nonetheless. Of course, the first iPhone suffered from the occasional crappy backlight, bum touchscreen, or negative black, so we wouldn't be surprised if a few lame displays made it out of the factory floor for this model as well; we're following up with Apple on this and we should have more for you later today. We took the iPhone 3G on a decent drive around New York, and found its tracking to be impeccable. In a situation where we might have veered off the path following Google Maps directions, the blue blip kept us right on track. Despite what you've read (we're looking at you, Mr. Pogue), we see no technical reason that the aGPS can't provide turn-by-turn directions, provided there's software to take advantage of it. There are some complaints floating around about 3G reception, but it's been just fine on our review units around the world so far. How's it treating you out in [your location here]? iphone-dev has a video up of BootNeuter going about its business on a first-gen iPhone that's been upgraded to firmware 2.0, and the process is looking as slick and painless as ever. Unlockers who haven't shelled out for the 3G, commence your salivating. MobileMe seems like it's up for the moment, but don't breathe too hard lest you bring the whole thing down again.
Update: We just spoke with Bob Borchers, senior director of product marketing for the iPhone, and he had some very interesting info regarding the "yellow screen" phenomenon we've been hearing about. According to Bob (and Apple), the screen's color temperature has been purposely altered on the new iPhone to produce warmer, more natural tones, sharper images, and deeper blacks. The company says that 1st gen iPhone screens appeared colder and less defined, and they made some adjustments for the new models. In our opinion, what he says is right on -- the screens do look better on the iPhone 3G versus the older variety. What do you guys think?

Those pee-tinted screens Blam discovered in the Gizmodo iPhone 3G review are there on purpose, and are meant to make the screen "warmer" and easier to see, Apple said today in its first official response on the matter. Apple’s senior director of iPhone product marketing, Bob Borchers, told MacWorld that the yellow hue was neither a defect nor a bug.

Talk about an android phone made by Google died down after the release of Android, but it seems that you just can't keep a good rumor down. According to TechCrunch, an Android made by Google may actually become a reality based on two new bits of information—the first being a quote in a Mediaweek interview with Google head honchos Larry Page, Sergei Brin and CEO Eric Schmidt. The reporter noted that “The trio of Google execs also used the opportunity to talk about the inroads the company is making with its own branded mobile phone as a replacement for the iPhone.†The second being that Techcrunch claims a company called the Ammunition Group may be behind the design

Reporter Eric Spillman went down to the local iPhone line on Friday to cover it for his station. His version of coverage consisted of standing next to the line and asking hard hitting questions such as "Have any of these people ever seen a naked woman before?" not to anyone in particular, but to the camera. Not that I'm against making fun of geeks, but such an unoriginal and unfunny approach just set him up to be called out. When he finally did approach someone in line, the whole thing got a little more awkward. Kudos to the guy in line for making Spillman look even more stupid.

Digital Smoke LLC is proud to announce the release of their popular Solitaire City game for iPhone and iPod Touch devices. As with the Windows and Pocket PC versions, Solitaire City on the iPhone is played against the clock for points. The faster a game is completed, the higher the score. If a Wi-Fi or cellular network connection is detected, then scores from players all round the world are automatically downloaded for daily, weekly and long term competition. The graphics are of the highest quality, making full use of the iPhone's 3D hardware to display rotating, spinning cards, shadows and particle effects. Fun sound effects also add to the experience.
All the popular solitaire games have been implemented such as Spider, FreeCell, Klondike, Poker Squares, Pyramid, Golf, Yukon and more, along with less familiar games such as Casket, Eliminator and Alternations, all with numerous game rules to add variety. Learning the rules of an unfamiliar solitaire game can be tedious and confusing at the best of times but Solitaire City actually makes it fun using a unique training system that teaches people how to play as they participate, pointing out valid moves and explaining the rules along the way. No more boring game rules to read. Learning to play is now fun.
Solitaire City's artificial intelligence points out when a game has blocked and it's time to give up, sparing the frustration of searching for a non-existent move. It can also point out the best move to play when the going gets tough, saving valuable time in the quest for a top score.
Solitaire City is available from the new App Store or iTunes and is compatible with the iPod Touch and all iPhone models including the new 3G device.
Digital Smoke is an independent software developer, creating fun video games for a variety of popular handhelds, computers and consoles.

So I read this on gizmodo. Here's the truth...
Post beta 4, the ramdisk hack stopped working. Sorry Zibri, guess you'll have to steal another exploit. They also changed the recovery mode USB protocol to use the control endpoint to send commands.
The possiblity of unlocking, which is very distinct from jailbreaking, is based entirely on the baseband bootloader. Apple doesn't appear to upgrade the bootloader on phones in the field, probably for fear of breaks. So any old iPhones out there today, regardless of version, can be unlocked.
The iPhone 3G uses a different bootloader, which I believe there aren't any known exploits in yet. So no unlock.
There is a known exploit in iBoot, on both the old and 3G iPhones. The "the specific date/time is not firm yet" pwnage tool will leverage it to jailbreak all 2.0 software iPhones, 3G and otherwise. Dev team, that date better be soon or I might just have to release yiPhone. The iBoot exploit is yours, use it. You wouldn't want a repeat of ZiPhone now...

Apple has announced that sales of the iPhone 3G topped one million on Sunday, just three days after launch.
"It took 74 days to sell the first one million original iPhones, so the new iPhone 3G is clearly off to a great start around the world," said Apple CEO Steve Jobs.
Apple also said that iPhone and iPod touch users have downloaded more than 10 million applications from its new App Store since its launch late last week.
According to a report by The Guardian, RBC Capital Markets analysts believe that buyers will be frustrated by limited stock and logistical problems caused by launching across 28 mobile operators in 22 countries. Nevertheless, they expect Apple to achieve overall worldwide sales of 5.1 million iPhone 3Gs by Q3 2008.
iPhone purchasers in the US were unable to use their new phones for several hours because the iTunes store - through which users administer their accounts - was weighed down by requests.
In the UK, O2 - the exclusive mobile retailer for iPhone - saw its web-based retail system collapse on Friday, making it impossible to register and sell new handsets. The problem persisted into Saturday when stores were unable to sell the new phones, despite adequate stock.
Apple is expected to meet its target of launching the new 3G handset in 70 countries, said RBC analysts, and will sell around 14 million iPhones in the next year.

an interview with Extreme Tech, Apple product head Greg Joswiak explained the lack of cut and paste in the iPhone: it's just not a priority right now. He says Apple worked its way as far down its "priority list" of features for firmware 2.0, but just not far enough to reach cut and paste. He then went on the explain why there wasn't a full native office suite ready for App Store launch, and that turn-by-turn navigation is allowed and likely to be released soon, though by a third party.

After unlocking and jailbreaking iPhone OS 2.0, the iPhone Dev Team has now liberated the new iPhone 3G, only five days after launch. This means a Pwnage tool that will allow you to install the unofficial applications that Apple doesn't want you to have in your iPhone—like video recording apps or game emulators—alongside with the App Store ones. The upcoming Pwnage will support the classic iPhone, the iPod touch, and the iPhone 3G. The video shows it works great, shown here.
We can't wait for the tool to be released.

You know that the iPhone is powerful enough to render 3D games like Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, as well as various other ones we covered in the marathon review session, but just how powerful is it? How does it compare to actual gaming handhelds like the Nintendo DS and PSP? An EA developer put it this way. On a scale of the three, it's in between the DS and the PSP, but sliding more towards the PSP. That's right. In terms of power, you can expect to see games that look at least as good as the DS once developers get enough (read: more than four months) development time with it.
But how good is the iPhone in terms of being a game console? How good are the tilt controls for accepting input for programs that you to make small adjustments with the phone in 3D space? Here's what the same developer from EA said to better help you conceptualize its accelerometer. "Think of it as a loose analog stick...you get lots of random data." Developers need to create smoothing algorithms in order to take random data points and interpret them into a curve which can then be used as movement info. Think about the Wii Remote before the MotionPlus add-on in Wii Sports Baseball. Remember all that jiggling your bat did? Yeah, this is that.

After six long days, Apple has issued an official statement on the debacle that was / is the MobileMe transition, and has offered a 30-day extension to contracts as an olive branch to disgruntled users. According to a form letter being sent to subscribers, the company openly admits that the switch to MobileMe was "a lot rockier than hoped," and claims that the service is now running smoothly.
Additionally (and somewhat surprisingly) Apple rescinded its use of the word "push" to cover all of its services, conceding that while there is indeed push to-and-from iPhones and the "cloud," computers are still being polled every 15 minutes... which is the same as .Mac (and honestly Apple, you didn't know that wasn't technically push?). We suppose this would be all well and good provided that MobileMe was actually functioning as advertised, but indications from readers -- and our own testing -- suggest otherwise.
Customers are still having difficulties with email and syncing between iPhones and the cloud (duplicate messages, deleted messages that don't leave the inbox, etc.), the advertised "auto-complete" on mail addressing doesn't function at all, and calendars are plagued with small moving / deletion problems, as well as being unable to sync subscriptions... and that's just off the top of our head (see the company's support forums for more). The 30-day extension is a nice gesture Apple, but we're thinking customers would prefer a service that works as advertised.

News from the Gizmondo Scene:
Freer et O. have been talking..
I'll sum it up, with a message from the Gizmondo God himself:
QUOTE
Service Pack C
<In Progress>
Update : I'm waiting on official approval from Mr Freer for the release of BSP for the Giz ( I've already had unofficial approval ).
This BSP will enable a standard CE build for the Giz.
The first release will be _binary only_ : tbh the code is curently hacked together and very untidy, but it works ..
I'm just not prepared to let the world examine the code and tut..
The code _will_ be released once I've had a chance to clean it up.
I'm also requesting permission to host the original files.

We've been getting scattered reports that Apple's shiny new toy might not be snagging as many bars as it should for a lot of users. In our own tests, we've noticed the iPhone 3G fairing poorly in spots where other 3G devices exhibit strong signals, and the Apple support forums are alive with displeasure over what might be a widespread issue. We're curious to know what you -- the reader -- are experiencing. How's your mileage with the new phone?

iPhone unlocking is a little more cash-intensive now that Apple and AT&T are all contract-happy with the 3G, but it looks like would-be unlockers will have a little more time to save up those pennies -- the erstwhile hackers on the iPhone Dev Team say that while a forthcoming version of the sadly-named Pwnage tool will activate and jailbreak the iPhone 3G, unlocking is taking a little longer than expected, and they don't want to release the code until it's exactly right.
The tool still unlocks first-gen iPhones running 2.0 and allows jailbreak apps to co-exist with the App Store, so if you're desperate to unlock right away, we'd say a first-gen unit is your best bet.

The World War Two action game Brothers In Arms is now available from the N-Gage application's Showroom section. If you're having trouble seeing it, select Options and then Update Now, which should make it appear in the Latest Games section. If you still can't see it, exit N-Gage, open the phone web browser, select Options, then Clear Privacy Data, then Clear Cache, close the browser, start N-Gage up and click on the Available Games section of the Showroom. (Thanks to ccraig for tipping us off about the release)
The unpacked installation file weighs in at a massive 37 megabytes, so this game can take many minutes to install. Don't worry if the installation seems to be progressing slowly, it does get there eventually.
If you haven't yet got N-Gage on your phone, here's a step-by-step guide on how to install it. The platform is currently compatible with the Nokia N81, N81 8GB, N82, N95 and N95 8GB, with more phones due to be added fairly soon.

Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3D is a Mario Kart-like 3D racer with Crash Bandicoot at the wheel instead of the chubby Brooklyn plumber. You unlock new characters as you collect items, but the controls are pretty much standard for iPhone racing games. The one thing we noticed is that the default calibration is off, leading Crash to always veer left at the neutral point even when we started up the game with the phone on a desk. This means we needed to tilt the phone slightly to the right to go straight. For $9.99, we expect better.

Feeling a little left out after yesterday's Mac-based Pwnage Tool festivities, Windows users? Fret not, because the ever-vigilant, ever-studious hacking community has managed to come up with a series of steps to get you back on your feet again with a fully pwned first-gen handset. The whole shebang isn't necessarily for the most casual jailbreakers -- let's just say it isn't quite as straightforward as the Mac procedure yet -- but it'll allegedly get you going if you're starting with an iPhone running 1.1.4 (there are additional steps if you jumped the gun on 2.0, you impatient son of a gun, you -- think of it as penance). As always, exercise extreme caution, understand that this could cause your iPhone to spontaneously combust into a useless pile of metal, plastic, and ash, and let us know how it goes in comments.

Sort of. Pwnage Tool 2.0 can't handle 3G iPhone SIM unlocks just yet, though jailbreaking should work just fine, and we're also faced with the teensy little problem of the Dev Team's server being totally destroyed by downloads already -- mirror please? -- but the friendly little jailbreak app has finally been unleashed upon the earth. We'd never suggest trying out software like this right out of the gate, but, um, let us know how it goes, yeah?
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
Update: We're seeing mixed results so far in the comments, but no bricked phones to speak of. Always a good thing. Oh, and plenty of mirrors to be found in the comments, thanks guys!

If you Google "iPhone apps," the first thing that comes up is iPhoneApps.org, a site selling a bundle of "top 10" iPhone applications for $25 using "safe PayPal." Friends, there's nothing safe about this site. It's a scam. The iTunes App Store is the exclusive distributor of official iPhone apps, period. Don't get your apps anywhere else. Tell your friends and family. If you're savvy enough to use Installer.app, this PSA is not for you, obviously (I mean, you know you can get all this stuff for free, right?).

Jonz has released a new version of his Nes Emulator for the iPhone:
NES.app lets you play Nintendo games on your iPhone. It is a fully functional, feature-rich Nintendo emulator.
NES.app uses an emulator core we call NESCore, which we've forked from pNESx and InfoNES and re-engineered as a highly-portable and high-performance Nintendo emulator core.
In order to use NES.app, you will need ROM images of Nintendo games. ROM images are files containing the dumped instruction code from a physical cartridge. In many cases, you are legally entitled to posess a ROM imageof any game that you presently own. ROM images for NES are widely available online, or with the appropriate hardware, you can dump them yourself directly from the cartridge.
Features
Multitouch: Use the directional pad + A + B, or other combinations
Landscape Mode: Turn the iPhone counter-clockwise to play in landscape mode
Zapper Tap: Tap objects on the screen to shoot them
Full Screen: Enlarge your NES picture to the max possible
Save State: Save an instant snapshot of your game and come back to it later
Game Genie: Use Game Genie cheat codes
... and many more
NES.app is not iPhoneNES!
NES.app started as a fork of iPhoneNES v0.01, but has been completely rewritten to run very fast, and with many additional features including sound, multitouch support, full-screen, landscape mode, game genie codes, saved games and much more. It now contains zero code from the original iPhoneNES project.

A heaping handful of fresh alleged screen shots of S60 Touch's user interface are floating around, apparently yoinked off the platform's PC-based theme editor -- not as cool as if they'd been lifted from a Tube, granted, but still good enough to give us some clutch insight into where Nokia's taking this thing. As revolutionary as the move to touch control might be for S60 as a platform, the UI looks shockingly evolutionary so far; in fact, to the untrained eye, there are portions that are virtually indistinguishable from S60 revs of yore. That's good news (we suppose) for S60 diehards who aren't interested in learning a new paradigm -- and we're all for the VGA support here -- but it's bad news for anyone who was planning on having their noodles positively baked by Espoo's engineering manpower and massive R&D budget. Let's all just hold off on the negativity until Nokia gives us something official to ogle; for the time being, though, our boring UI-dar is definitely on high alert.

News from Zodttd;
Hello from ZodTTD,
I have begun porting over my projects to jailbroken iPhone/iPod Touch firmware 2.0. The first projects I've started with are Quake 1 and gpSPhone (GBA emulator).
Keep in mind all software before 2.0 firmware needs the source code to be compiled with a new toolchain, and in many cases changed around a bit due to differences in the firmware's frameworks. This is why Cydia currently has a lack of software compared to 1.1.4 and previous package management systems like Installer.app. It's not a matter of repos, it's a matter of time it takes to get the port made.
Many other developers and I are working on getting their software to work on firmware 2.0. Some may say if I get my software running on firmware 2.0, could I put it on AppStore...
I am unable to take my current softwares as they are now, over to AppStore due to Apple being selective of what they allow. Apple does not want an emulator requiring external files such as BIOS' and ROMs. When it comes to vlc4iphone, the streaming aspects are allowed, but playing external files may not be.
While I have some software in mind for AppStore, it will most likely not be an emulator. I wanted to do a Shoutcast streaming media player, but it seems I was beaten to it. It will take some thought as to what would be feasible for AppStore.
In the meantime, we have a jailbroken 2.0 firmware ready to see some homebrew!
Thanks for playing,
ZodTTD

As we covered in our case for still needing the iPhone app black market, developers are gagged by a non-disclosure agreement that keeps them from talking about actually programming the iPhone with anybody, even though sharing info would help app development. Surprise, developers don't like that. So now we have ****ing NDA, which aggregates their rants and musings, turning them into a single stream of angst about, well, that ****ing NDA.

These Neoneco Swing Speakers from Korea hook onto your iPod nano, classic or touch and provides sound where there was none before. It's not made for any sort of high fidelity sound reproduction, but at a battery life of 10 hours (it's got a separate power source) it provides bare-minimum sound on the go. Grab one from Korea if you really want one, but it is quite good if you want to share YouTube or iPod videos with other people and not get their earwax all over your earbuds.

The one major bit out of AT&T's quarterly earnings call is that the iPhone 3G is selling twice as fast as the original iPhone did last summer—in case the unending squiggles of people trailing out of Apple Stores and AT&T shops didn't tip you off. They didn't actually say how many were sold, but we know that worldwide Apple sold a million of them as of nine days ago, just three days after launch. Of course, the hot $199 price—undoubtedly responsible for the phone's brief life on shelves—means AT&T won't actually make money off of it until 2010. You know, when we're on our fourth-gen iPhone.

The idea of controlling your DVR via your iPhone is nothing new, but this MythTV iPhone remote allows Linux DVR users to get in on the fun of using their phones as visual remotes. It's got a real-time program guide so you can easily set recordings, plus the standard channel and volume buttons to flip around channels with. The only thing we have to complain about is that the UI is fairly ugly and not refined at all, but it's bearable. Unfortunately all of us here use either TiVo or Media Center or the cheap set-top-box provided from our Cable company, so we can't test it out. Let us know how it works for you.

According to a rumor that's been getting a little traction on the Mac sites, the new iPod nano will be multi-colored. Notice that we said "nano" and not "nanos." Because while the current nano line is offered in multiple colors, 9to5Mac is claiming that the next nano will have more than one color on each model. In addition, the storage capacity is said to be doubled alongside the inclusion of "new features."

A company called Creative Coffins offers a service where you can choose themed caskets designed however you like, leading the nerds at T3 to mock up some interesting ones with the concept. Would you want to be buried in an iPhone casket? A Vista casket? How about GTA4, Halo, or an SNES one with an eject button on the side? If these are too tasteless for you, you could easily design your own and have the company plaster it along the exterior. We'd probably choose the Goatse design as a metaphor for the gaping maw of hell we're undoubtedly headed for after making poop jokes on Giz for more than two years.

Remember that Aurora Feint Puzzle/RPG game that we told you we liked? Turns out we don't like it anymore. In fact, we're actually pretty damn scared of this app, seeing as Apple de-listed them from the App Store due to privacy and security issues. While most of the attention has been on iPhone 3G stock at Apple Stores (rightfully so, since Apple is hoarding most of them) anyone not in driving distance of an Apple Store has to get theirs in AT&T land. So here's the sorta good news, if you're patient: If you do AT&T's direct fulfillment deal—pay for it in full, then they call you to pick it up when it arrives—you'll get your phone in about two weeks on average, guaranteed. And the bad news:
All the phones are going to the direct fulfillment program, so don't expect to just walk into a store and buy one. They're not getting them, and won't, until the shortage is over:
We hope to begin re-stocking our stores as soon as we can, but first priority goes to those customers who purchased through direct fulfillment.
Our advice? If you've gotta have one NOW, take Friday off, drive to an Apple Store before it opens, and make an urban camping trip out of it—bring beef jerky, a fishing pole (to fend off panhandlers) and guitar to sing Kumbaya, which, with any luck, will drive people out of line.

Nintendo and Sony are both watching Apple's iPhone closely to see how it does as a gaming device.
Speaking to MTV Multiplayer at E3, Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime said, "We certainly monitor it." John Koller, PSP's senior marketing manager, admitted Sony was "looking at it intently".
However, neither executive said it worried them too much as a competitor. Fils-Aime pointed to the Nintendo DS' massive installed base, adding: "We'll see what happens with the iPhone but it is not something that will make us change our direction."
Meanwhile, Koller argued that consumers approach iPhone and PSP for different reasons - iPhone as a phone primarily and PSP as an entertainment device. "I think indirectly it's a competitor, but it's indirectly just like the Zune is and the DS is to a degree because it doesn't offer everything that the PSP does," he said.
"Most analysts that we talk to say that the competition for iPhone is actually against DS and that type of gameplay," Koller added.
With the launch of the iTunes App Store, Apple's touch-screen phone has become a more interesting playground for game developers - with 36 games available to compete for your digital download money. Of those, Bomberman Touch, Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3D, de Blob and Super Monkey Ball are probably the more interesting, with a lot of puzzle, gimmick and gambling products filling out the ranks.
It's also worth noting for those who only keep half an ear to this area of the ground that Square Enix's Song Summoner, released this month, is for previous generations of iPod and not the iPhone/iPod Touch.
Anyway, we've recently got our hands on an iPhone 3G with the intention of bringing you reviews of those and future titles, and letting you know how the handheld works out for gamers, so watch this space - or let us know if there's a particular game on the App Store that you're interested in. We'll also be taking a look at Song Summoner very soon.

We've noted in our iPhone 2.0 software review that iTunes' full image backup of your iPhone when you've made changes to what apps you've got installed can take a really long time. We're talking tens of minutes. If you're the type of person that doesn't really store anything important on your phone that can't be reinstated from your contact list or calendar or elsewhere on your computer, Zero Logic found that you can actually skip this process.
Two caveats to this. One, you shouldn't interrupt a backup that's in place, because that results in a corrupt backup. It's fine if you perform another backup right after to make a correct one, but if you forget and try and restore? It's phone corruption time. Two, using this method means you will not have a phone backup. Yeah, seriously. You won't have anything to restore from, so you'll have to go in naked the next time something's broken with your OS. Now that you know what the risks are, here's how you do it:
This command will change a hidden setting in the iTunes preferences that will force it to skip the backup process.
1. - Quit iTunes.
2. - Open Terminal.app
3. - Copy and paste this in, then hit return:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes DeviceBackupsDisabled -bool true
4. - Open iTunes
5. - Plug in your iPhone (2.0 or 3G) and sync.
It will take a few seconds, assuming you don't have a ton of music or podcasts.
Changing the 'true' in step 3 to 'false' will re-enable the backup feature.

Apparently looking to give Bose a run for its money when it comes to long overdue product upgrades, Revo has now finally seen fit to gift its Blik RadioStation with an iPod dock, a move that follows its similarly risky forays into the rarely explored fields of WiFi and DAB radio. Apart from that welcome addition, however, this newly-dubbed iBlik RadioStation looks to be identical to its most recent predecessor, with it packing the same WiFi and DAB as before and, of course, the same love-it-or-hate-it styling. If that's a bit too much for you to handle, Revo has also kindly introduced the DAB-less iBlik WiFi, which will set you back £130 (or about $260), as opposed to the £180 (or $360) the full blown iBlik RadioStation will run you. Look for both of 'em to hit Europe next month.

According to the oracle-like superbrains at J. Gold Associates, Google's Android OS and Nokia's Symbian will "combine to provide a single open source OS," sometime in the very near future... say, three to six months. Sure, Android is just about to launch on devices in late 2008, and Nokia just announced in June that it will be moving Symbian towards open source -- and of course the two companies have no formal relationship that would come close to permitting such a collaboration. Still, J. Gold assures us this is happening, stating, "A combination of the Android and Symbian efforts would be good for the industry, good for Google and good for Symbian." In related news, we understand a handful of similar mergers are in the offing: Linksys and Belkin, Red Hat and Ubuntu, Engadget and Gizmodo, and the inevitable one-two punch of Coke and Pepsi.
Update: Craziest thing, it turns out that Google, Nokia, and Symbian are all dismissing the platform merger talk as utter nonsense. And for once, we believe those trusty souls; who knows, maybe it's the complete lack of technical synergy between them?

Your morning iPhone news fix: looks like Apple's seeded a beta of firmware 2.1 (not to be confused with the supposed 2.0.1 that will fix the myriad bugs and issues with 2.0), which may have some new GPS features that would imply turn-by-turn directions. No argument from us if Apple really is including new Core Location hooks for tracking your direction and speed, which would both be needed for doing proper GPS navigation.
Another bit which may or may not make it into 2.1 is copy/paste. We're still both hopeful and skeptical, but supposedly in the new version of the WebKit framework exists commands for "plugins," "copy," "paste," "cut," and some others. We can't confirm if these really exist (and if they do, we don't know how they've actually been there, or if they're simply holdovers from the desktop WebKit frameworks), so don't hold your breath. Also supposedly making its first appearance in the 2.1 beta code: Apple's push notification service.
Oh, and by the way, if all this has whet your appetite for the device, sounds like today will be a bad day to try and snag one. Apple's retail site shows absolutely zero iPhone availability in the US, so if you're jonesing then check out eBay or the seedy looking dude on the corner with the overstuffed trenchcoat.
Update: Looks like the stores have been updated in the last hour, many have stock. Game on!

We know, we know -- this one's going to be a doozie, but it's something that just has to be done. For folks out there too far from the reaches of GSM or simply unwilling to cough up the requisite dough to pay for AT&T's comparatively pricey plans, we figure Kevin's question will hit very close to home:
"What is the best alternative for the iPhone / iPhone 3G? I am looking for a touchscreen phone that has most of what the iPhone can provide, such as media and decent web browsing. I am also looking for a device with a lower cost (with or without a new plan). Could you please help point me in the right direction?"

We don't remember Naughty Dog's wise-cracking ottsel brandishing a knife, but hey, we're always open to crazy new ideas. Oh, this is Dexter, the hit Showtime series about a forensics expert who also happens to be a serial killer (of other killers). Whoops.
Anyway, IGN has a story out of San Diego Comic-Con 08 that is sure to put a sour puss on anyone who was waiting for a console game based on the show. Ecko, who acquired the rights to Dexter for game-making purposes back in March, revealed during a panel that the game is only coming to iPhone and iPod Touch. It was also revealed that the game will be episodic in nature – hey, like the show! Coincidence, surely. Mr. Ecko is certainly no stranger to spray paint, but blood spray? Start practicing those stabbing motions with your fancy phones, folks ... but just do it in the privacy of your own home for the sake of not looking like a total loon, 'kay?

If you're covering an event and already carrying a huge gear bag with a laptop, camera, emergency Cliff bars and all the rest, QuickVoice is a welcome replacement for a standalone digital voice recorder. We like QuickVoice as a late addition to our favorites for its pause feature, which allows you to start and stop recordings without creating a whole new clip.

It seems like a distant memory now, but there was a time I could walk out of my house without a cellphone and never give it a second thought. As the years have gone by I have found myself growing increasingly attached to my phone. To be perfectly honest, I would rather not be bothered with phone calls and emails when I'm out—so why the hell do I bring my damn phone with me when I'm riding on a mountain bike trail? Seriously, it's unhealthy. So, I have to ask—are you like me? Do you feel naked without your cellphone?

Aurora Feint, the iPhone game that was de-listed because of security concerns, has made it back onto the App Store. So what did the developers do? They ripped out the contact list integration entirely, opting for a more Nintendo friend code-like system that they will introduce in the near future. And if you're still worried about their security, this is what they've currently got in place:

We're not sure if Brando's version of the external iPhone battery pack bests the others we've seen in performance, but it's definitely the cheapest by far. At $25, it's a whole $18 cheaper than the iPhoneck, and half as costly as Macally's PowerLink. Is it any good? No clue yet. But it's cheap, which is all some people care about.

Is GTA 4 a murder simulator? Probably not, but any game based on Showtime's Dexter damn well better be. According to a tweet by TV squad, a Dexter game is on its way to the iPhone and will be detailed later tonight at the Dexter Comic-con panel. Will we be able to use the iPhone's accelerometer to bludgeon victims? Or cut up body parts by drawing them (with multiple fingertips) on the screen? Only time will tell—because Dexter himself surely won't.

These screens were released today by the developers of Installer.app showing Installer 4, the next version that will work with jailbroken iPhones running firmware 2.0. By the slick looks of it, it looks like they're getting close. When it's done, it will be multi-threaded (meaning everything doesn't come to a halt while your sources are being updated) and support package dependencies as well. As you know, we can't wait.

While some of us at Giz actually have better reception with the iPhone 3G than before, that's not the story raging in Apple's support forums, where few or no bars is the order of the day—and not just in the US, but worldwide, apparently. For AT&T's part, they're redeploying a bunch of 850MHz spectrum (which penetrates indoors better) for 3G service through the end of the year, so it should get a little better, at least. In the meantime, how's your reception?

News from zodttd:
Hello from ZodTTD,
I've been working hard on getting all my projects upgraded to work on iPhone and iPod Touch firmware 2.0. Recently Exophase, author of gpSP and Temper, gave me brand new Temper source code to implement.
Temper4iphone is a Turbo Grafx 16 (PCEngine) and Turbo Grafx-CD (PC-CD) emulator.
So in order for Exophase to get some initial feedback on temper4iphone I have released this iPhone and iPod Touch firmware 2.0 releaseof temper4iphone v0.9.75.
It is on the brand new ZodTTD Beta Testers Cydia Repo!
Beta Testers get ready for some 2.0 firmware gaming!
Next up, gameboy4iphone, gpSPhone, and Quake 1!
Now remember that in order to get "beta" releases from Zodttd he has a "donation" system at his site, so in effect your paying for the emulators, if your happy to do that then visit here --> http://www.zodttd.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2769

2.2.4 is out now
2.2.4 [jonz] Added aspect ratio option for landscape mode
Optimizations for landscape rendering / stretch
Adjusted alpha on landscape control to 20%
Latest binary release [ 7/20/2008 ] for iPhoneOS v2.0

The Tenori-On is the zany Yamaha touch-based musical sequencer that caught our eye earlier this year, but this cool PacklSound1 iPhone app could very well be the portable version that puts us over the edge. It's a simpler version of the original $1,200 Tenori-On box, but that didn't stop the designer from laying down a quick, catchy beat. Seeing it in action, makes me want it right now

I ripped a sick backside fakie 360 ollie and shotgunned a Mountain Dew when I saw this $179 X-Games skateboard shelf and iPod stereo today. Then I fired up some All American Rejects just for good measure and sighed heavily. The sounds of pure emo moods spewed forth the player's two 5" speakers, and I quickly fired off an abbreviated text message to my friend sitting on the couch next to me about how much I hated my parents and materialism. My vial of midnight black hair dye vibrated with barely contained malice for our consumer society on the skateboard shelf above. It was just another Sunday.

The covert nature of Apple's production facilities is generally on par with those of military contractors, but according to one buyer's report, an iPhone 3G recently came pre-packaged with three photos taken inside an iPhone production facility. While two were blurry, this particular photo came out very well...even if a mass of clear plastic isn't Apple's ideal way of presenting the device. I wonder if all of that casing is reused while the iPhone is repackaged in that special, Earth-friendly potato box.

Oh, the cruelty—German pre-order customers still waiting for their iPhone 3Gs to be delivered apparently received this sick little joke in the mail instead, obviously inspired by reader Matt's original papercraft iPhone he made to quell the anticipation for the first launch. My German is, well, I don't speak it, but Google does, and it seems as if the full flyer after the jump is labeled "As a small passtime/tinkering project" at the top. Just plain sick.

Seeing as Apple's FairPlay DRM has already been cracked for music and movies, it's not at all surprising that people are starting to poke holes in the FairPlay-based iPhone App Store. The first loophole is pretty simple, since it doesn't appear that FairPlay links the iPhone hardware to specific Apple IDs: just log into iTunes from any of the machines authorized to use your account, and every app you've purchased will be available for free re-downloading to any attached phone. Since music and movies wrapped in FairPlay can be transferred to unlimited iPods and iPhones, we're guessing this little trick will work indefinitely, but we wouldn't depend on it.
There's also a more traditional crack which allows apps to be stripped of DRM and shared without using iTunes, although you'll have to jailbreak your phone to do it. The first app to be widely pirated is Super Monkey Ball, which isn't surprising, and it seems like several other apps have followed it out onto various torrent sites. In addition to the relatively simple jailbreak procedure, running cracked apps requires you to open up SSH access and do some mucking around, so unless your time is worth less than $10, it's probably not worth it. Still, we've got a feeling that won't stop the hardcore pirates out there from doing their thing, and it'll be interesting to see how Apple deals with the problem -- we'd bet that it just looks the other way.
Finally, all these DRM-related restrictions have led to a lot of speculation about offering open source apps under the GPL in the App Store. Since the GPL generally forbids any restrictions on redistribution, it would seem that FairPlay's restrictions would put a software author on pretty shaky ground if they use GPL code in an official iPhone app, as they would have to violate the terms of the GPL by putting the final app in the store under FairPlay without source. Furthermore, even if an iPhone coder starts clean and doesn't use existing GPL code, they can't choose to license the app under the GPL separately from App Store distribution, since sharing source is against Apple's iPhone SDK NDA. Of course, it's not really like open-source devs to sit around getting bogged down in legalities -- Wordpress has already put up all the code for its official iPhone app under the GPL, and it would be a pretty stupid PR move for Apple to ask for it to come down. The only true solution for Apple would be to drop the NDA and allow some apps to be distributed and shared without FairPlay, but that's not going to happen overnight -- and even then there will be logistical and legal hurdles to overcome. In other words: rock, meet hard place.
Funny, these are exactly the sorts of ridiculous, illogical, and inane problems you get when you start screwing around with DRM -- but you already knew that, didn't you, Steve?

Apparently developer John Carmack loves his iPhone and is still kicking himself for not having something ready to go at launch time. However, he has announced plans to bring a "graphical tour de force" to Apple's popular device.
"But as for which one, the company isn't saying just yet, though given that the recently launched id Mobile division already has Doom RPG and the forthcoming Wolfenstein RPG to its credit, we wouldn't be at all surprised if Carmack will bring Quake or some flavor of Rage to the small screen as well. What's more, he's apparently considering the idea of tackling the MMO market on the iPhone down the line, though he admits that he's being 'conservative' and doesn't 'want to be in a bet-the-company situation' just yet."

iLounge is reporting that this year's iPod nano will have a bigger screen than the current generation, with the same 1.5:1 widescreen aspect ratio as the iPhone and iPod touch. In order to cram in that kind of screen real estate, it's getting stretched back out to its old school proportions (which I like better anyway). They're also saying that the rumor the nano will have a discoteque-worthy paintjob is "most likely inaccurate." But yeah, it does sorta look like a Zune! iPod season is here

The iPhone 3G's data plan for the deaf will be $10 higher than the original, just like it is for everyone else. It comes with unlimited texting, email and web browsing for $50 a month, or $65 for the enterprise flavor (basically if you use Exchange). You have to sign up for a voice plan when you buy the phone initially, and then you send in the eligibility form to get the plan.

Apparently hidden in the code of the 2.1 firmware we're anxiously awaiting to make our iPhones less laggy and crashy (and maybe add copy and paste!) is a reference to a new iPod touch model. The current iPod touch designation is "iPod1,1" but there's a string in the code for an "iPod2,1" which points at a brand new iTouch.

Palringo is a free multi-client instant messaging app for mobiles that hit the App Store over the weekend, and it's the first to officially support Google Talk/Jabber, on top of Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo, ICQ, iChat and Gadu-Gadu (if you're in Poland). You can also use it to quickly send photos from your camera or photo albums to anyone on any of your buddy lists, who will see an inline image (if supported) and a link to a bigger (but still compressed photo) on Palringo's servers. Not MMS, but the feature works as advertised. It's great I can use GTalk on the iPhone now, but again, this is something we've been able to do via jailbreak and Installer.app for a while.

One report, it's an anomaly. Two reports, maybe one's fake. But more and more reports have been surfacing—with photos—of cracking white iPhone 3Gs. So is the white iPhone constructed in an inferior manner to the black model? Or could black iPhone 3Gs just better at hiding the cracks? We're not sure, and there's still too little info to know at this point whether the trend is something to be worried about. But does anyone in the audience have a cracked white iPhone in-hand?

Dynolicious is an all-purpose automotive performance meter, utilizing the built-in accelerometer in the iPhone and iPod touch to record your driving characteristics. BunsenTech, the makers of the software, claim that it can record 0-60 times within .08 of a second, accurately estimate your current speed and monitor and record any directional G force. The system seeks to perform nearly every function of (much) more expensive dedicated monitoring units, which seems like an awfully tall order for a $12.99 piece of cellphone software.
