So, we all agree that most cell phone games are really, really boring (we agree on this, right?), but here's one that we think any red-blooded gamer can still muster some excitement over: The Legend of Zelda. That's right, the plain-old, original Zelda ... but with a twist. The homebrew heroes behind this project have seen fit to update all that old, pixelated stuff with new, Minish Cap-ish graphics, and they're looking good.
Don't believe us, check out these hi-res maps or -- better yet -- download the latest demo (featuring dungeons one through three) for your Midp2-compatible phone. Don't have one of those? Then try out the PC executable. Can't run one of those? Sorry, bub.

What a bumper week it's been for gamers who like playing games on their mobile phones that are about sport or quizzes.
First up there's Who Wants to Be A Millionaire? 2nd Edition from Glu Mobile. It features new questions and enhanced graphics, and for the first time you'll be able to take part in the "fastest finger first" round. The faster you answer questions, the higher you'll score - and you can upload your scores online to show other people who care about this sort of thing how clever you are.
If you're the type of gamer who doesn't like quizzes, or perhaps doesn't mind quizzes, but prefers sport, you might like to try sports game FIFA Street 2 from EA. Apparently the mobile version "captures the look and feel of the console product", which sounds nice.
You can pull off all sorts of exciting moves, from passes and sprints to flips and spins, though possibly not headbutts. There's a Quick Play mode for, well, you know, plus a Rule the Street mode. FIFA Street 2 mobile is out by the end of the month.
If you're the type of gamer who prefers quizzes to sports, but doesn't like football, how about Michael Vaughan's Cricket 06/07 from Player One? It's got seven field settings based on Vaughan's successful Ashes campaign, new fielding run-outs and a 3D isometric fielding view.
Eight national teams and venues are featured, and there are eight batting shots and 12 bowling manoeuvres to choose from. You can also take your pick from more than 100 players, each with stats based on those belonging to the world's top cricketers. Michael Vaughan's Cricket 06/07 is out now.
And that's not all Player One has got lined up - there's also retro classic Nebulus, which features eight levels of shooting fun, and casual gaming title Reactor Pinball.
Neither of those are about quizzes or sport of course, but there's always World Pool Championship, which features top players such as Earl 'The Pearl' Strickland, Johnny 'The Scorpion' Archer and Steve Davis. You can expect 3D playing environments, championship and single play modes, plus a two player mode. Nebulus, Reactor Pinball and World Pool Championship are available now.

The iPod has a million and one uses, just like those knives they sell on late night TV. Besides playing your collection of MP3s and iTMS-purchsed songs, it can also record your voice, a feature I would wager not many users take advantage of. Focal Point Computer's Micro Memo XRM-IP magically transforms your 5G iPod into a voice recording machine, pleasing the dozen or so people who use their iPod thusly. It plugs right into the dock connector, at which point the iPod latent voice software awakens and you can begin recording in stereo.
Voice is saved onto the iPod as WAV files, so you can transfer the files off the iPod onto your computer and convert them into whatever space-saving, lossy format you desire. The Micro Memo doesn't require any external battery source either, so no worries about running out of juice so long as you keep your iPod charged. Available in black or white, the Micro Memo even features a monaural speaker. You probably wouldn't want to listen to your music through the speaker, but the din of your professor should sound just fine. Look for it in the Land of the Rising Sun in August for $77..

Apple's not talking, but the company has filed a patent that shows a next-gen iPod with speech capability, telling you what song will play next in a variety of celebrity voices.
This won't be your run-of-the-mill robot voice, either. Apple is reportedly working on a system that uses famous actors' voices to perfectly pronounce even the weirdest song titles and band names. Imagine, fanboys, having the voice of your god Steve Jobs telling you which song will play next.
The heavy lifting for this voice work is done using the computer's processor, which then creates audio files that are also loaded onto the iPod. Then when you use the clickwheel, you'll hear the titles and artists of each song without needing to look at the iPod's screen. Neat.

A second analyst has forecast iPod delays. Late last week, Baird analyst Tristan Gerra added his voice to American Technology Research market watcher Shaw Wu to tell investors higher-capacity iPod Nanos will not appear as early as expected.
As early as analysts and casual observers anticipated, that is. Apple has given no indications as to when - or, indeed, if - bigger Nanos will come to market.
Gerra's forecast, cited by a variety of newswires, has 6GB and 8GB Nanos coming to market in November. The timeline's based on a 31 per cent decline in NAND Flash spot-market prices, said to be the result of Apple pulling back memory orders from June to August.
The analyst also said he reckons NAND sale fell below vendor expectations in Q2. That implies there'll be rather more Flash chips in the channel during the coming months with prices falling to clear it. In turn, that could explain Apple's order delay - it's riding the pricing curve rather than pushing back product releases.
Either way, Gerra's words echo Wu's. The ATR analyst wrote last month forecasting a "quarter or two" delay to the release of the eagerly anticipated widescreen video iPod from his anticipated Q3/Q4 launch window. Wu also predicted a Nano set-back.

The Seattle Times reports that details on Microsoft's handheld gaming/music device are finally slipping out. The Argo project looks to be Microsoft's hedge against angry analysts, upset that the next versions of Office and Windows have slipped yet again. From the article:
"As reported last week, initially by Bloomberg News, the device is expected to go on sale by Christmas. It has Wi-Fi capability so it can connect wirelessly to home and public networks and other players. Wi-Fi sounds like a big deal if you're comparing the player to the wire-bound iPod. But this is more than just another MP3 player. It will also compete with game players from Sony and Nintendo that have long had Wi-Fi and work as media players, Internet terminals and communication devices. Argo is likely to showcase another Allard project -- XNA, a new toolkit that helps game developers create titles for multiple platforms."

With some iPod revisions just around the corner -- at least according to the more optimistic rumor mongers among us -- there are new whispers of Apple pulling another design revision reminiscent of their iPod mini to nano transition. This time, though, they're taking it in reverse, and are supposedly outfitting their miniature player in aluminum to combat those scratches and durability problems that the nano was so given to. The aluminum is supposed to even come in various colors just like the mini did (pictured above), but the player is said to retain the same form factor as the nano, along with bumping the storage capacity to 8GB. These rumors are based on AppleInsider "sources," so we really have no way to verify their accuracy, but it seems pretty reasonable that Apple will do something about their players to combat those scratches and the accompanying lawsuits.

Although most of the games that get people talking are PC, console, or handheld titles, a lot has been predicted regarding the future growth of the mobile-games market. Whilst the subindustry has found it hard to break into the mainstream world, there remains a massive potential for growth.
To find out more about the current state of mobile gaming at the Develop Conference in Brighton and what needs to be done to realise this potential, GameSpot sat down with Kamar Shah, head of industry marketing at Nokia Multimedia, and Markus Huttunen, business development manager for the company's games business unit.
GameSpot: Where do you think mobile gaming sits in the industry at the moment?
Kamar Shah: First of all, you have to look at the handset itself. Computers have evolved a great deal since the '60s, but it's still not a true multimedia device--it's not always with you, it's not always on, and it doesn't always support out-of-the-box voice communication.
If you look at the Nseries phone, this has become the true multimedia computer, because you can download and listen to music, look at your e-mails, play games--and it's always with you, always connected. So technology has evolved, and it will continue to get smaller and cheaper.
Then you need to look at how people are using a device--people are talking, texting, and maybe going through what I would call a shopping-mall experience, in other words, they may go in, browse a few things, buy a few things, and that's been fine.
But where do we go from there? The big thing at the moment is user-generated content. MySpace has been huge, Three Mobile is doing My Reality TV, there's AirG, Helio...so technology has evolved, consumer behaviour has evolved.
So how does that relate to mobile gaming? We've had analysts say that the industry will be worth $7 billion by 2010, but how do we get to this Holy Grail? Games are a revenue driver, because they're entertainment, but we need to grow the market. Therefore, it's not about the hardcore gamer, it's about the casual gamer, and so we also need to improve the consumer experience--how many times have you downloaded a game that didn't work properly or wasn't very good?
To grow the market, as an industry, we need to open up our distribution channels and make content available over the air, over the Internet, and out of the box. To enhance the consumer experience, from each part of the contact with the game, that has to be better. At Nokia, we're working on an application that enables you to trial games, look at reviews of games, and it opens the whole thing up.
After that, the real crunch comes with the developers--they're the core of the business, they make the games. So we'll tell them to make a game, and we'll handle the rest--we'll make sure it's consistent across the range of handsets, we'll help you with DRM solutions, hosting, connected gaming--we'll give you tools, developer support, and prototypes of new handsets. And that's how we can improve things.
GS: If that's now, when does the future that everyone talks about actually become the present?
KS: Our commercial launch to consumers will be in the first half of next year. We're working with our first-party partners, EA, and GameLoft, to bring content to the next generation of N-Gage. By the end of this year, we'll also have a full developer offering, with tools and workshops, and then it's a solid platform.
GS: We've seen a lot of consolidation in the mobile-games industry in the last couple of years--where has that gotten us?
KS: In any growing industry, you'll get that--it's just business. As long as the quality of content is there, it doesn't really matter who's making it.
Marcus Huttunen: One good thing about mobile-phone games is that the development budget for the teams is still relatively small. So you can still have the grass-roots innovation with teams of just a few guys, who just make the most beautiful game concept, make the first reference build, then go to a publisher and get it distributed that way. I can't see that happening with the PlayStation 3.
GS: Is the mobile-games arena the last playground for originality that remains, then?
MH: I wouldn't say it's the last playground if you look at what Nintendo is doing, but it's certainly a very good playground. Actually, if you look at the PC side, a lot of the originality there is happening around the nongaming segment--it's more like playing than it is gaming. People who play these flash games, who follow e-mail links, probably wouldn't classify themselves as gamers.
There's an interesting statistic from the Nokia Games Summit last year, talking about the number of people seeing Pogo and comparing it to other entertainment properties in the US. It was bigger than any hit movie, any hit TV show, and none of these people are recognised as gamers. This is an area where innovation is happening, more than the traditional gaming platforms.
GS: Thanks for your time.

Metaview posted this news:
If you have a device with lot of dynamic memory and UDMH you might like to try my latest port: Hexen2!!!! As usually you will need the pak files from the original game. Read my website for installation instructions: http://www.metaviewsoft.de/
Known bugs are (among others): Sound is not working, Music neither.
Hexen 2 is a Quake 1 engine and therefore it was quite fast to do, except from two bugs which drived me mad... One of it was even in the original port I've made this port of. But this port shows the problematic we will run into when one would try to port Quake 2: Memory. ZHexen2 needs around 14 MB dynamic memory. Something you will probably only get on a T3, TC or the Zodiac in conection with UDMH. I believe it's impossible to run it on a TX or even a T5. This devices doesn't even have so much real memory free to use. Prove me wrong and I'll invite you to a cokkie :-)
As far as I know Palm OS is the only known mobile OS, which does have an Hexen 2 port yet :-) Grab your copy from http://www.metaviewsoft.de/.
Enjoy! Henk.

Just when you thought the iPod couldn't get any bigger. Bob Borchers, the senior director of iPod worldwide product marketing, recently told CNET UK's Crave that Apple wants more consumers using iPod-enabled automobiles rather than the plethora of third-party accessories. Borchers also said that Apple has no interest in producing their own car stereo, but they will be working with other companies to improve iPod integration in new cars. So I guess buying a new $20,000 will be the new hot iPod accessory this year.
I personally think this iPod integration is a bunch of rubbish. I recently purchased a new Honda Civic and I was given the option of iPod integration. It is essentially a iPod dock connector that comes out of the glove box, whoop de doo. I'll take my $350 that I would have spent on this iPod accessory and spend it on Taiwanese hookers and have a way better time, especially because the new Civics already come loaded with auxiliary inputs for the stereo. Hey car manufacturers, ditch the iPod connection and just start including auxiliary inputs in all vehicles. It is cheaper, will make the FCC more happy—no FM transmission—and can work with the iPod and more.

Think Secret has learned that Stephan Jobs himself will announce the availability of movie rentals via iTunes at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference on August 7. It is also being reports that Walt Disney, Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. have already signed on to offer content for the iTunes movie rental service.
Jobs was persistent to get a movie purchasing program via iTunes—similar to their music purchasing service—but it was a no-go from the picture studios. So the rentals will have to suffice. To prevent piracy the movies will include some kind of time stamp that will restrict playback to either a certain number of playbacks or a certain time period before rendering the downloaded flick useless.

An analyst has claimed Nvidia has won the contract to supply Apple with graphics chips for future video-centric iPods. The claim comes as another, less reputable source alleged upcoming iPods will play old Nintendo games.
American Technology Research market watcher Satya Chillara this week told clients Nvidia has beaten Broadcom to provide video chips for the video iPod. Broadcom's part already delivers H.264 playback, but Nvidia's offering adds 3D graphics to the mix, he said, EETimes reports.
Apple recently ditched PortalPlayer in favour of Samsung as the supplier of the key controller chip for future iPods, so doing the same with its media chip provider is not unlikely.
Whether Apple will use that 3D acceleration - assuming Nvidia has won the contract - remains to be seen. The claim made by an anonymous MacRumours source that upcoming iPods will play old Nintendo games makes for a striking parallel, though the 'classic' tag suggests these are SNES-era titles, for which 3D acceleration wouldn't be needed.
Still Apple might well want 3D acceleration to boost the video iPod's appeal, particularly if, as has been claimed in the past, the device ship with a large, wide display. Speculation continues that Microsoft is planning to offer a handheld media player with Xbox-branded gaming on board, and it's tempting to see the Nvidia rumour as a sign Apple is competing directly with it.
The downside is a dilution of the iPod brand. But if Apple's planning to do movies, then it's already broadening the product family beyond music, so why not games too, particularly if it can tie it in with a well-known name?

Since the latest release of PSMoz has recieved nearly 3000 downloads, I thought it might be time to move onto the broader iPod market.
I have an iPod myself, so transferring the audio file and editing the ID3 tags was a personal experiment. Whilst the iPod does not have speakers, it does have a high volume limit - sufficient for playing the PSMoz file through the earbud headphones (but please don't play the file at full blast with the headphones in your ears ).
How To Use (From the README File)
UNPACK THE RAR FILE TO YOUR MUSIC DIRECTORY.
- DRAG THE FILE INTO ITUNES AND UPDATE YOUR IPOD.
- TAKE YOUR STANDARD EARBUD HEADPHONES (LIKE THE ONES WHICH COME WITH THE IPOD).
- MAKE SURE YOUR HEADPHONES ARE NOT IN YOUR EARS.
- SELECT THE "REPEAT" FUNCTION IN THE IPOD SETTINGS MENU.
- PLAY THE iMOZ FILE AND TURN THE IPOD VOLUME TO FULL.
- LEAVE THE HEADPHONES IN AN EXPOSED POSITION (NOT IN YOUR EARS!)
- ENJOY THE iMOZ PROTECTION!
Enjoy!

- Fixed Joust.
- Started to update loader. I haven't finished that yet, but you can enjoy the changes so far.
- Fixed rotation cutting off screen
- Note: Program startup and Searching for ROMS will now just blank the screen for a bit. That's normal and for searching it can feel like a long time, just let it go.
- Added Zodiac hardware acceleration and screen stretching (don't choose scale if you have a Zodiac, it is already on)

Sound is still a little dodgy.
You can have:
50fps, 0 Frameskip, no sound
or
25fps, 1 Frameskip, sound
The default config is with sound.
I'm trying to optimise it for 50 fps, 0 Frameskip, sound but don't hold your breath with this piece of cr*p hardware. (well drivers and OS to be accurate).
Hopefully most segfaults are gone.
If you are attaching an image and can't get it to run with "Load first program", use the disk browser.

It appears that apple have cleverly planned to redesign the next-gen IPOD, currently the best selling music player in the us. A new patent passed says the following:
A method for initiating floating controls on an electronic device, the method comprising: detecting the presence of an object above and spaced away from a surface of the electronic device; and displaying a particular graphical user interface element on a display of the electronic device when the object is detected above the surface of the electronic device.
An mock-up of the new interface is attached in the comments.

After you've dropped more money in a vending machine than you ever thought possible, you're left wondering how to fill your new iPod with media to escape the monotony of your 10 hour layover. Enter 22Moo, an Australian hardware and software designer who is developing an iTunes kiosk -- dubbed PodBuffet -- to place in airports, train stations, hotels, shopping centers, and who knows where else. The prototype is powered by a Mac mini attached to a 15-inch touchscreen display that allows users timed access to the iTunes Music Store. Equipped with WiFi and all the appropriate USB, FireWire, and dock connectors, the PodBuffet won't refuse service to any iPod. The idea is to provide convenient access (and satisfy those cravings) to Apple's media mall when your laptop is MIA, and we can imagine this setup creating quite a few impulse indulgences as well. 22Moo hasn't announced a launch date nor any plans to bring these stateside, but hopefully the famished can enjoy the all-you-can-afford PodBuffet sooner rather than later.

Record companies tend to complain about downloads, particularly since most songs are still downloaded illegally. But when it comes to legal downloads, they get most of the cash.
Record companies keep about 72.5 cents on average for a 99 cent song, Dave Jaworski, CEO of PassAlong Networks, at the AlwaysOn Stanford Summit. PassAlong sets up online music services for other web sites. It has a big store on Ebay too.
The credit card company then gets a small slice. The rest goes to the people who sold the song. In PassAlong's case, the company divides the remainder with the retailer.

sweetlilmre posted this news:
Hi,
Okay a quick update:
I have reimplemented the gp2x button set code.
When you first run the exe a file 'grodogiz.keys' will be created in the app dir.
The instructions on how to make your own button sets will be written to the file, have a look. You can have multiple button sets defined (nice for a specific layout for your favourite game).
If you want some examples, download frodo for the gp2x and look at the frodogp2x.keys file, but be aware that many names are different.
Also in this release:
vkeyboard:
- cursor remains within the keyboard.
- Click and drag of the keyboard cleaned up (click and hold fire on the top line of the kbd, you can drag it around, position is remembered).
- default keys changed to add space as forward key (nice for skipping through all those crack-tros).
settings:
- setting menu now shows the current button set, you can switch between the defined ones (I hope).
This was a 1 evening job, and rushed between doing the kids home work etc. so I can't guarentee it, please let me know of any crashes / bugs. I didn't have time to look at the multi-disk game stuff or the sound.
Squidge has generously offered to have a look at the code for optimisation and I'll be setting that up for him in a day or 2, so hopefully we'll have some improvements in the sound stuff soon.
I will be away at Black Hat for the next week and a half, I'll try to catch up on mail, but it will be unlikely that I'll be able to do any dev.

We can add another iNotch on the iBedpole to the list as Memorex has annouced its forthcoming portable video (and audio) player for Apple's iPod. The iFlip claims to only support the 5th generation variety (what about 6th gen?), and sports an 8.4-inch LCD with 480 x 234 native resolution, built-in speakers, tilting dock, and an integrated battery to provide "up to" 5 hours of excitement, which we assume drops substantially when using the device to play back video rather than just audio. While the fold-up unit has S-video out, line out, dual headphone jacks, and an on-screen menu to adjust color / brightness-related aspects, there appears to be no way to mirror your iPod's display on the iFlip (i.e. for showing album art while a playlist spins). But if the small screen on your iPod has you bumming, you can grab an iFlip in September for $200 and make life on the road -- at least for a few hours -- a bit more enjoyable.

Alright, dear readers, you know the drill: proceed with caution. We have no confirmation here, but sometimes a tip is too juicy not to share, no matter how suspect it might be. A reader is reporting to us that a coworker's tech-unsavvy friend, who is regularly hired by Apple to do marketing photo shoots, was recently brought on to take some shots of "the sleekest, sexiest damn phone he's ever seen." The launch date? "Some time in August." Yeah, not a typo -- August. Now, to be perfectly clear, we don't know what the iPhone (if it exists) will be actually called, we've never seen a real pic of the elusive beast, and this doesn't really jive with the time frame suggested by Peter Oppenheimer's recent comments -- but we want to believe, and we don't have to wait very long for this one to get debunked or confirmed.

Well, at least somebody's doing something about their faulty batteries. Looks like after the "silent" MacBook Pro battery recall has officially turned into a full blown 15-inch MacBook Pro Battery Exchange Program. So, got a MacBook Pro from between February through May of this year? Check your battery out, because if you've got a model A1175 cell with a 12-digit serial number that ends in U7SA, U7SB or U7SC, then sign up, get that replacement shipped out, and send your old one back. Because who knows what might happen if you don't, right? Just kidding, we wouldn't want to alarm anyone, but seriously, check it out, ok? Companies don't issue battery recalls for their damn health.

Yeah, everybody's been grasping at straws (including us) for possible info on the iPhone for, well, the last couple of years now, and the latest adds fuel to the speculative fire without providing any answers. So what else is new? Anyhow, in the June 28th iPod updater package, apparently if one were to analyza few particular files with a hex editor, one would produce some very peculiar and anomalous commands, like t_feature_app_PHONE_APP, kPhoneSignalStrength, clPhoneCallModel, clPhoneCallHistoryModel, prPhoneSettingsMenu, and so on. They're confirmed to have absolutely nothing to do with the Moto iTunes phone line, which makes sense, and we will concede that such a find seems highly unusual. Still, we'd hardly be willing to call this type of thing nascent evidence of an iTunes phone; on the other hand, if there was one around the corner, WWDC would be as good a place as any for Apple to announce. After all, what better place than Apple's own developer conference would there be to announce a new mobile device platform, hm?
