News/release from Zodttd:
Hi everyone,
I've been working hard on getting MP3 support added to ogg4iphone. I have finally accomplished this, and in the process fixed a lot of bugs and added a few more much needed features.
Here's what's new in ogg4iphone v0.7.0:
MP3 support added. ogg4iphone now plays MP3s in addition to OGG.
Playlists added. Add music to two playlists available. This feature will be worked on much more.
Stop music button added. Enjoy the silence.
Random play added in the Settings.
Volume increased 3x. Now you can hear the music too!
Tons of bugs fixed.
Be sure to check out ogg4iphone v0.7.0 in the ZodTTD Public Repo, just add this source to Installer.app: http://zodttd.com/repo
It will also be available in the community sources via the ModMyiFone repo shortly.
Now that ogg4iphone has more than just OGG playing, should the name of this app be changed? Let me know by replying. Suggestions are also welcome, but keep in mind this is still a new application I'm designing from the ground up.
Thanks,
ZodTTD

The drawbacks outweigh the benefits.
a) The location tech in the current iPhone is much quicker. No matter what chip, even SiRFstar chips in full blooded GPSes take awhile to lock on. When using the very capable N95, I'd often drive across town or walk half way to my destination before I'd get signal lock.
b) I'd never use an iPhone as a car GPS. Not even with updated software. The amount of work and expertise that goes into a high end, 5+ generation Garmin is some serious stuff. The logic is all proprietary. It's not easy to do. And GPS antennas need to be somewhat pointed. If it's on your dash, it needs to be on the back. If it's for walking, it needs to be on the front. Which is it?
c) Battery life gets screwed when you keep the GPS on with constant updates.
d) These chips aren't exactly small, although they have been known to fit in things like Suunto watches. That going to make this thing thicker?
No thanks. Don't need it. I'm fine with the current location technology. It works for walking and that's all I need it for.

This is good news: It looks like Android will have a one-stop shop for applications, making it easy for developers to get their goods out there and users to pick 'em up. While the "Android Store" isn't confirmed, project lead Andy Rubin said at the Google I/O developer conference yesterday:
"It would be a great benefit to the Android community to provide a place where people can go to safely and securely download content and where a billing system would allow developers to get paid for their effort...We wouldn't have done our job if we didn't provide something that helps developers get distribution."

ah, did you really have the nerve to doubt CraigIX? The iPhone gamepad add-on that we heard about just last week is already inching closer to reality, and there's a video to prove it. In the somewhat unexciting clip posted up after the jump, you'll see a PCB mockup of the device doing its thang, though it's quite inelegant in its current form. If you just needed one more something to boost your interest / confidence that this critter was real, you know where to head.

In a move of unsurprising proportions, StyleTap announced today that it will be bringing its Palm OS emulator to the iPhone and iPod touch... officially. This basically means that every one of those precious Palm apps you couldn't live without will now be easily accessible via Apple's devices, thus seriously threatening the argument for keeping your Treo 600. Gregory Sokoloff, CEO of the company, said that the response to a video posted in February of a demo version of the software convinced them to take the plunge. Palm, now might be a good time to stun us with your new OS.

Just a heads-up college students, in case you're in the market for a new Mac: Apple's annual back to school promotion is expected to kick off tomorrow, and it's rumored to top the nano they've been giving out for the last few. College students who buy a qualifying Mac will get a free 8GB iPod touch (or 8GB nano). The promo will supposedly run June 3-Sept. 15, but we'll know more tomorrow (or by WWDC at the latest) for sure. So hold off for another day, just in case.

Phew. Not the closest call we've seen, but close enough to get us sweating ever-so-slightly. We had a strange feeling some wires were crossed when a report surfaced stating that the "Gphone" wouldn't be shipping until 2009, but for whatever it's worth, Google has now addressed the issue and affirmed that it is "still on track to announce Android-powered phones this year." The spokesperson continued by proclaiming that "some of [its] partners were publicly stating that they plan to ship Android phones in the fourth quarter," which leads us to say: crisis averted, carry on.

Mobile Chat is a chat application for iPhone's. There are WIP news abou the upcomming v3 release.
Quote:
Well, we’ve begun testing the MC 3.0 application and so far, everything we’ve claimed is a reality. Here’s the reality of our tests:
1. We had a conversation from a computer running Adium to an iPhone running MobileChat.
2. We chatted for about 20 minutes at which time, we restarted the iPhone.
3. MobileChat’s new backend went into play and it immediately began queuing the incoming messages for the iPhone.
4. As soon as the iPhone came back online and MobileChat was opened, the messages started coming down to the iPhone.
The person running Adium, had no idea the user’s iPhone was rebooted. They just thought the person was getting their IMs…and they were!
The new MobileChat truly re-defines instant messaging on the iPhone. We’re very happy with our tests and we’re excited to release the new version as soon as AppStore opens up. (Whenever that may be.)
Questions? Comments? Let us know what you think based on what you’ve heard so far!

Apple plans to charge a whopping $25 for games that use its iPhone, a developer has revealed.
Ignacio Cavero, CEO of development studio LemonQuest, told PocketGamer that Apple's "games would be sold in iTunes for €17-18" (which is about $25, or £14). Currently, games for the iPod cost $8.
Whilst LemonQuest can only say its working on "a big UK licence, and we're using all the capabilities of the iPhone," EA and Sega have confirmed they're releasing adaptations of Spore and Super Monkey Ball on the platform.
After the inevitable UK price hike we wouldn't be surprised to see these titles land here for about £20.
That's about the same price as most Nintendo DS games, coincidently enough. It all points to Apple finally sizing up to Nintendo in the handheld space. But could, as a Forbes story yesterday claimed, the iPhone kill the Nintendo DS? We're not convinced.

New version of the Commodore 64 emulator for J2ME (MIDP 2.0) mobile phones.
Changelog:
The jar archive contains the compiled code of the JME C64 project. The jad file contains a decription of the contents of the jar file and is needed on some devices.
This release is only for usage on mobile devices supporting J2ME with MIDP 2.0. Use the latest JSwingC64 release for a version that can be used on a PC.
After uploading the jar file to your mobile device, you should be able to run the emulator. On some devices the jad file is also required to be transferrred to the mobile device.
You may optionally execute the following steps to include C64 programs into the archive, prior to transferring it to the mobile device:
- Rename the .jar file replacing the .jar by a .zip
- Add the C64 programs (.t64,.c64,.prg,p00) you want to be able to run to the programs folder and add these programs to the programs.txt file.
- Rename the archive replacing the .zip by a .jar
If your device supports the FileConnection API, then you may omit this step and instead transfer the programs to the file system of your mobile device and use the "Search Programs" menu entry to make these programs available to the emulator.
In case that you modify the jar archive as described above, you may not use the downloaded jad file as the file size information it contains is then incorrect!
The javadoc zip file is meant for those who are interested in the class structure of the application, i.e. rather developers than end users.
Changes:
1.8 (based on rev. 631)
- enable suspend and resume for the emulator (feature request ID 1665194)
- fixed the problem that the screen size might be calculated incorrectly (bug ID 1986383)

It's official you can start downloading games to your iPhone starting in July with the launch of App Store.
The App Store will be part of the iPhone 2.0 firmware update that is free to iPhone users, but $10 for iTouch owners. That's right, Apple is charging for a firmware update.
Why should you care if you own an iPhone or iTouch? Spore, Trism, Galga, Pacman and maybe, just maybe Puzzle Quest. Also there are the games announced at the beginning of the conference.
Games can be downloaded by cell connection if they are less than 10 MB and via WiFi if greater than 10MB.
So far it looks like games will run for $10 a pop, though it will ultimately be up to the developers to set prices. Apple keeps 30 percent of the revenues. If the dev decides to give the game away there is no charge at all from Apple.
Stay tuned here for other gaming news coming out of WWDC today and if you're looking for a deeper, more in-depth look at the whole show make sure to catch Gizmodo's amazing live coverage of the conference.

This morning at San Francisco's Moscone Center, Steve Jobs and company took the stage to unveil their plans for the iPhone 3G, and gave Sega a chance to show off its upcoming iPhone game, Super Monkey Ball.
Eight weeks after the SDK event, the developer came up with 110 stages of the game, including "all four of the classic monkeys" from previous versions of the title.
Ethan Einhorn demoed the last world in Super Monkey Ball to show just how well the tilt control works. Observers at the event were impressed with the game's graphics and performance, giving applause as Einhorn successfully navigated the first checkpoint.
The "tilt control works beautifully," said Einhorn. "Sega loves the App Store and Super Monkey Ball, and we're looking forward to more apps."
Super Monkey Ball, in addition to several other games, will be available for iPhone at launch of App Store on July 11 for $9.99.

There are a lot of iPhone users out there wondering what the arrival of the iPhone 3G means for them and their cool, but sluggish, first-gen models?
Well, O2 has confirmed that existing customers will be able to upgrade to the new model, for free in some cases but, in all cases, with a little catch.
You can get the new 3G model for free if you buy into the £45 or £75 per month contracts but, you will need to sign up for a new 18-month contract. You don't have to wait for your existing contract to end as that will stop as soon as you sign up for the new one.
If you want the new model but aren't able, or willing, to pay for either of those contracts, you can pay £99 and opt for the £30 or £35 per month contracts.
As for the pay-as-you-go option, don't get too excited. There are many who thought they could buy the phone cheaply without the contract and then get it unlocked on a different network to save a lot of cash. Well, Apple and O2 are aiming to squeeze those shoppers. Yes, there will be a pay-as-you-go option but it is expected that the phone will cost you a lot more - prices expected in the coming week.-Martin Lynch

If you're anything like us, just about everyone in your family has called you up this week to ask if you think they should get the iPhone 3G; it really doesn't help matters that there's just an absurd amount of (mis)information floating around about it right now, too. So this one's for you and your fam -- we're dishing out the straight dope on iPhone 3G, a to z, so feel free to pass it on.
So, what's with the new iPhone 3G?
Well, it's pretty much the same iPhone as before -- except now it's down to $200, and has way faster 3G data, A-GPS (which is even better than regular GPS), as well as a flush headphone jack (which is great for anyone who doesn't want to use Apple's bundled headphones). Oh, and it's also a little thinner around the edges, and a little thicker at the center. If you want to know what it was like to try out, check out our iPhone 3G hands-on.
How'd they get the price so low? The iPhone used to be crazy expensive.
Actually, depending on how you do the math it's not actually cheaper. Now, in some countries the iPhone is free when you sign up for service, and in the US you'll pay $200 for the 8GB model -- half what it was a month ago -- so you're definitely paying less up front. But the data plans cost more now, so you might wind up spending more money over the long run.
Um, ok.
Look, gadgets only get cheaper as time goes on, and Apple's sold enough iPhones to continue to lower their cost to manufacture each unit. But more importantly, Apple's re-arranged its business deals to get carrier subsidies. Basically, what that means for Apple is they've decided to stop asking their carrier-partners for a cut of your monthly service fees. In exchange, the carriers have agreed to pay a significant chunk of the cost of your new iPhone 3G in order to get you to sign up.
So everybody supposedly wins: Apple sells more devices and still makes good money, AT&T gets more subscribers, and you get a cheaper iPhone. But there is a financial toll to this: AT&T estimates that helping you pay for your new iPhone will actually cost them $600 million through 2010. But clearly the numbers indicate that the short term cost will be worth it for them the long run.
Does that mean Apple doesn't make as much money per phone?
For all we know Apple might actually be making more money per phone now. With the original iPhone 3G, you paid "full price" for an iPhone -- $600 at its high point. Now you'll be paying no more than $200 (and as little as nothing in some countries) for the 8GB model, so we don't really know exactly how much of Apple's price the carriers are knocking off. We think it's fair to assume it'd still be in the $400-450 retail range, though, if it wasn't subsidied. Which it is.
What's up with the data and SMS pricing?
Well, Apple will be in 70 countries (and counting) this year, so you'll get different plans from region to region. But in the US, users will have to sign up for a minute plan that includes an extra $30 rate for 3G data access (and has no bundled text messages). This is $10 more than the original iPhone's rate plan, which was $20 for data and 200 included SMSs. Matching voice plans start at $40 per month, so you'll basically be able to get started at $70 per month. (We've also got a bit more on AT&T's new plans here.)
I heard you can't activate the iPhone at home anymore, is that true?
This is still a little fuzzy. Here's the deal: with the first iPhone, Apple used to let you buy it in the store and take it home to activate. This process is unlike almost every other phone on the market, but since it's Apple, and because you were paying full price for the device, if you never activated it with AT&T or just unlocked it and sent it to your friend in China or whatever, it wasn't a big deal. Apple made their money on the device, and AT&T didn't lose anything.
But since now AT&T is basically picking up a huge portion of the cost of your iPhone 3G, they want to make damn sure you aren't going to unlock it or send it to a friend. From what we've heard, you'll likely have to start the activation process in-store (so Apple and AT&T knows exactly who's buying the device), and then you might be able to finish it off at home. It's definitely not ideal, but it's the only way they can prevent people from basically walking away with a few hundred dollars of AT&T's money. And at the end of the day, it probably won't be WORSE than buying any other kind of phone though -- anyone who's bought a phone from a US carrier in the last 10 years will be well acquainted with the process.
I heard you have to turn over your iPhone when you upgrade, is that true?
Naw, you bought it, it's yours to hang on to. But if you bought one within Apple's grace period, they'll let you upgrade it free. (More on that below.) But if you bought an original iPhone early on -- which means half of your two year contract is about up -- know that when you buy an iPhone 3G you'll be re-upping that two year contract from date of purchase. So if you buy an iPhone 3G on day one, your new contract will expire on July 11th, 2010.
So if I bought an original iPhone, I can trade it in for an iPhone 3G?
Yes, but only if you bought it AFTER May 27th, 2008. Anyone who bought theirs before that has to live with their purchase -- not that anyone can stop you from showing up to your local Apple store and raising a ruckus.
Can I continue using my original iPhone? Will they still update it?
Yes, and yes! Although the first gen iPhone is officially no longer being made, not even Apple would be so bold as to deactivate the 6m iPhones already out there. They intend to release their big 2.0 software release for iPhones and iPods touch on or around July 11th, which will be the same software running on the iPhone 3G.
What if I decide I don't like the iPhone 3G?
Apple and AT&T offer a 30-day money back guarantee (just in case you don't get coverage in the places you most often frequent). After that you pay a $175 early termination fee (ETF), which goes down each month over the course of your 24 month contract.
Is faster 802.11n WiFi supported?
Nope, it's still just 802.11b/g. Seriously though, you're a fringe case if you need more than 54Mbps to your cellphone.
Can I use voice and data at the same time?
Yes and no: unlike the original iPhone -- which did not support EDGE class A, and sent calls to voicemail while you were browsing the web -- the UMTS / HSDPA-based iPhone 3G should be able to handle data and calls at the same time when in 3G mode. So that means if you get coverage, you'll be fine. But if you're in a spot where there's only EDGE service, you likely won't be able to do voice and calls at the same time.
I heard rumors that this thing can get up to 40Mbps over 3G, is that true?
Right now AT&T's HSDPA network is supposedly capped out at 1.4Mbps for phones, but we hear the iPhone is rated for HSDPA 3.6 (3.6Mbps), and AT&T claims its network speeds will go even faster than that by next year.
What did they mean by "greatly improved" audio quality?
Well, we heard about it two ways: Apple claims they've both improved the audio circuitry and quality of the signal to your headphones, but also cleaned up the in-call sound quality. We haven't tested this at length though, so we'll let you know if that's the case once it launches.
Can I use the iPhone on any carrier?
It's not unlocked, so no, you can't. While we're sure that iPhone hackers will figure out a way to unlock it for the betterment of all mankind, you're pretty much expected to use it with your designated domestic carrier, and pay the usual exorbitant roaming fees when you leave the country.
I hear that even though it has GPS I can't use it as a nav unit, what's up with that?
According to the SDK agreement, it looks like Apple doesn't want you using your iPhone to replace your Garmin. But it should still technically be feasible, and they demoed their Google Maps app doing geo-caching, so it's really a matter of intended use. Apple, apparently, doesn't want the device to be used that way -- but at the end of the day it may just be a contract mishap. We'll know soon!
Why doesn't it do video / MMS / A2DP / scrub my callouses / pick up my dry cleaning?
Clearly Apple has the technological prowess to make (most of) that stuff happen, but for whatever reason they've chosen not to support it. Maybe it's because of battery life issues, maybe it's because Steve just didn't see the need. Either way, it's a philosophical decision for them, so they may never change it. Bummer, right?
So what the hell do I do with my old iPhone?
The funny thing about a $200 3G iPhone is that it makes it pretty difficult to sell your original iPhone. Unless you know someone who doesn't need the 3G, we'd suggest keeping it as a backup, or even jailbreaking and unlocking for use when traveling overseas (in places have GSM networks).
If you do try to sell or give away your old phone, do yourself a favor and read about how you can completely erase it. Just hitting the format iPhone button won't actually remove all your data, and you really don't want your private conversations and passwords to be recovered by someone else, do you?
All that's well and good, but I have a question you didn't answer.
42. Just kidding. Leave it in the comments below! If it's a good one (and something we have or can get the answer to) we'll add it in!

Yesterday we went over a few of the more confusing bits of the iPhone 3G launch -- and let's be honest, the details of this launch are confusing as hell compared to the original go-round. Of course, there were a lot of burning questions to be answered from the audience, so we got an AT&T spokesperson to weigh in on what's on your mind. The most surprising answer? Contrary to reports implying otherwise, AT&T pretty much categorically claims that no matter where you buy your iPhone 3G, be it from AT&T or Apple, you have to walk out of the store an activated customer. That means no in-home activation, and definitely no buying an iPhone for your friends or family. Check it out below, more questions after the break.
Chris asks: Can these devices be purchased and given as gifts?
No. You will need to walk out of the AT&T or Apple store with the device activated.
Greekjgg asks: What if I want to buy one for work which already uses AT&T for company account? I can't activate in store, obviously, so will it be possible to to buy without a contract?
We don't have details yet but iPhones for business use will likely be provisioned through your company's IT department.
Tons of people ask: If I purchase an original iPhone from a friend will I be able to get the old data plan pricing? Or will I need to sign up at the new, more expensive rate?
Yes. You can get the old data plan price if someone gives you a device and you establish service for yourself.
Chris and SeditioN VII ask: What's the no-commitment price?
We have not yet announced the unsubsidized price.
We follow up: So you WILL be able to buy it without the two year commitment?
We haven't announced whether or not that will be offered.
Vic asks: Will long-time customers who are otherwise eligible for a free or reduced-price handset upgrades be able to lower the price when buying the iPhone 3G?
No one will pay less than $199 for the 8GB or $299 for the 16GB models. As you know, those are subsidized prices.
Matt asks: Say I just recently signed up with AT&T, standard contract. Now I want to get an iPhone 3G -- will I have to pay more than $199 for the phone because it's subsidized? For example, if I were to upgrade to a Blackberry now, I can't get the advertised $99 price (because I am a new, existing subscriber); my price is $374.
It depends on whether or not you are eligible for an upgrade.
We ask: What is the penalty for not activating the phone in 30 days? How will that be enforced?

Signal Hill Capital Group's analyst Todd Greenwald has said he expects the mobile games publisher Glu Mobile to launch a range of iPhone titles.
In a report, Greenwald detailed what he was shown at the Glu Games Day - a showcase event for the publisher - and speculated as to the reason no iPhone titles were revealed.
"While we were disappointed that Glu could not show an iPhone title, Glu Mobile is clearly bound by NDA agreements tied to the iPhone App store launch in July, and was not able to say anything," he said.
"However, we believe they are hard at work on one or more iPhone titles, and will have products ready at launch."

We noted on the launch day for the iPhone 3G, that UK customers would now get free Wi-Fi via The Cloud and BT OpenZone, which caused some minor confusion. Today, O2 confirmed that BT OpenZone was being added to the package.
From July 11, more than 3,000 BT OpenZone Wi-Fi hotspots will be added to the free Wi-Fi deal you get with the iPhone. Added to The Cloud's wireless network, that takes the number of free Wi-Fi locations to more than 9,000, which should make many existing, and new, iPhone users grin that little bit wider.
Both the iPhone and iPhone 3G will automatically switch to faster Wi-Fi networks for faster browsing and data sharing when they are in range, according to O2.
BT OpenZone's 3,000 Wi-Fi hotspots include 13 wireless city centres, including Sheffield, Nottingham, Portsmouth, Westminster, Liverpool and Leeds, among others.
"By working with partners like BT OpenZone we can maximise the web experience for iPhone customers," said Ronan Dunne, CEO of O2 in the UK. "Public Wi-Fi hotspots ideally complement our mobile network, providing high speed web browsing and unlimited access to services like the iTunes Wi-Fi store in a wide variety of convenient locations."

S2U2 (Slide2Unlock2) is a simple lock/unlock application which has the iPhone style slide unlocking. It can be used as a screensaver while you don't use your device. And it's has a CallerID function (but some devices may not work, so please try it first); and S2P control plugin.
Although S2U2 is now called v1.03, it doesn't mean it can be run perfectly on your device. Thanks to different devices produced by different vendors. So, please test it before use it everyday, especially the CallerID function.
Changes:
- added unread count for Windows Live Messenger.
- fixed the bug introduced in v1.02 that Task count is always displayed no matter what setting.

WingLand Planner is an AI Planner running on your Windows Mobile Machine. It helps you solve your planning problems by using artificial intelligent planning algorithm. Problems can be defined and solved by the program without writing a single line of code. The program solves problem in 3 steps. 1) User defines the problem. 2) The program generates operators from the defined problem. 3) The program then solves the problem by using the generated operators in step 2 to form a plan.

Today we released the Windows SideShow for Windows Mobile Developer Preview. Now any Windows Mobile 5 or 6 phone can work as a Bluetooth Windows SideShow device! We've got some favorite uses of it already, including using it to control PowerPoint presentations while viewing the speaker notes, using it as a remote control to Windows Media Player, and viewing RSS feeds on the road. Really, though, we’ve barely scratched the surface of what’s possible here, and developers have the opportunity to invent a whole new range of scenarios using the software and the Managed API SDK (see below) that allows Visual Basic and C# development, so we’re really excited to see what’s going to come out next. Enjoy!http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=397234

GPSToday installs as a today-screen plugin on your Windows Mobile internet-enabled device. At the most basic level, it keeps your GPS hardware primed whenever you need it. But that is only for starters. In general, it will significantly enhance the utility you derive from your device. Check the home page for a (nearly) full list. http://www.geoterrestrial.com/

This program will make a missed call appear on your friends phone without actually calling them. Seems like a good idea if you just want someone to call you back without disturbing them with the ring.
Changes:
[+] Added delay call, now the program can give several tones before hanging (useful when you do not have balance and leaves the sweeper odious "His balance is about to run out ....", now put 7000 or 9000 ms i ms you're trying to adjust the time missed call ..)
[F] Fixed the startup error in WM5

Over at All About N-Gage, we're wondering when the Next Generation Gaming Platform is going to fully launch? With the initial roll-out of S60 v3 Feature Pack 2 phones not shipping with the N-Gage Client, phones aiming for a large user base, including the currently available N78 and impending N96 and Nokia 5320, and no sign of a compatible N-Gage client, the question is whether these devices will have the client in firmware before 2009. (Update: the official N-Gage blog has just announced the first FP1 phones with embedded N-Gage apps have begun to ship, starting with the N81. No word on FP2 yet.)
Most famous is the N96, which combines the dual slider of the N95 with the stylings of the N81, and has dedicated gaming buttons that slide out from under the screen. Even more significant is possibly the 5320 XpressMusic, which also has dedicated gaming buttons but more importantly will be the lowest-priced N-Gage-compatible phone so far, and the best contender for driving N-Gage gaming into the mass market.
No one knows exactly when these devices will be released, but Nokia has stated they'll be available some time in the third calendar quarter, which ends in September. In other words, even if these phones are released right at the end of September, Nokia only has about two weeks left to get the FP2 version of the N-Gage application ready if it wants to embed it in these phones. Embedding therefore seems unlikely to happen with these phones either.

News from Mollusk and co:
Hi !
I finally reorganized my game database and started adding info like coder, graphist, supported platform (pocketpc, smartphone, windows for now)
I'll be organizing the site around this in the next few days, and already added that info in the download part (though I'm starting to hate that part and will definately do a better/simpler game page...).
Also added a filter, you can now get only the windows or smartphone games if you want !
Windows games : http://www.xflib.net/index.php?actio...atform=windows
Smartphone games : http://www.xflib.net/index.php?actio...orm=smartphone
If you have any hints/suggestions, feel free

This application allows you to read large Text (.txt,.text), Palm Doc (.pdb), Mobipocket (.pdb,.prc,.mobi), Plucker (.pdb), HTML (.htm,.html), and FB2 files quickly and efficiently on the iPhone. This application lacks many of the advanced features of ruBooks or Books.app, but it can quickly load and display large text files that currently cause Books.app or other UI Text View/Web View based apps problems.
Changes:
Allows you to specify multiple encodings to try when opening a file
Will show .jpg and .png cover art for files
Adds left, right, center, and justified text alignment
Improved formating of HTML files
Improves the display of files formatted for wider screens
Option to show/hide status bar while reading
Many minor bug fixes http://code.google.com/p/iphonetextreader/

News from Zodttd:
Hello everyone,
ZodTTD here. I have been hard at work on fixing some tough bugs and various issues with my port and frontend of the VLC media player to the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch. The last of the major issues I had have been fixed, and I've fixed MANY bugs and even added a feature or two!
Here's a quick list of changes in vlc4iphone v0.9.5:
- Added a streaming media feature to vlc4iphone, so movies and audio can be streamed via HTTP and RTSP!
- Added full support (sound + video decoding) for the following video formats:
FLV (Flash Video) XviD (DivX) MP4 (MPEG4) MOV (Quicktime)
H264 (Hi Def) 3GP (Mobile movies)
- Added video playback of WMV movies.
- Added audio playback of OGG in addition to FLAC, MP3, MP2, etc.
- Added a fast forward and rewind feature for videos.
- Fixed up and improved file browsing within the vlc4iphone GUI.
- Fixed many bugs concerning stability.
With vlc4iphone you can download files from Safari on your iPhone or iPod Touch using a local download patch and easily add them to a playlist for playback, without worry of format and need of conversion and syncing tools.
Also, now you can enter your favorite media's HTTP URL or RTSP into vlc4iphone's playlists and stream the media over the net!
Have a YouTube video FLV? Just add it to vlc4iphone for playback.
There are still some things to do:
- I need to add ID3 Tag labels to audio media playback. And also label video media so people are more aware of what is being played during the playlist.
- I need to add a current location label to the file browsing.
- More performance can always help. Though FLV and MP4s are running very nicely assuming they aren't very large resolutions!

SASHIMI is an Installer. Its main function is to install CAB, .REG., and .XML files that can be used when setting up your device. It can be run in Manual Mode, Fully Automated Mode, or in Manual+Auto mode. SASHIMI can also perform backups of your important files and registry entries and allow for easy restore during installation.
SHASHIMI stands for Semi Automated Script for HTC-Kaiser Installations, MortScript Initiated.
Changes:
NEW! - Alphabetized processing of all files and folders for better control of installations.
NEW! - EXE paths and processing added to Install phases.
NEW! - Owner settings back-up option and automatic restore before install phase.
UPDATED! - Fixed issue with install to Storage Card routine hanging on CAB files with very short names.
UPDATED! - File order processing. Registry (and tandem registry) files now get processed after CAB file installs.
UPDATED! - INI file and path processing to better deal with missing values for critical path variables.
UPDATED! - CAB installer updated to deal with non-standard Storage Card naming.
UPDATED! - Startup executable (VipMSCRexe) updated to 3.0.
UPDATED! - Optimized code structure with reduced sub-routines for less code complexity.
NOTE: - Although SASHIMI has actually been reduced in code size, it's processing time has actually slightly increased. This is due to the new features, most notably enhanced error checking and file alphabetization.

Now here's something you don't see every day: a manufacturer openly complaining about its own product leaks on their corporate blog. Charlie from Nokia would "like to ask folks to do less peddling in [their] trade secrets," and lays out the myriad ways in which products get leaked (partners, employees, etc.), the supposed negative impact it has on Nokia's bottom line (lost money, angry customers, whatever), and how they feel about it (really upset). It's an interesting and sensitive topic because while companies hate having their products leaked, leaked products are our clearly part of our stock and trade here at Engadget.
Nokia kind of sums up their stance with this bit: "There are a lot of folks behind a product and leaks really screw up all the efforts." So yeah, we totally get that no one wants to have their inside info shared with the outside world -- we're a company too, and don't feel any differently. But it's up to each organization to insulate knowledge of its workings and products to prevent these kinds of leaks. It's not necessarily easy, but think there are few leaks that aren't preventable -- it's really a matter of companies taking their information security into their own hands. But just so Nokia (and everyone else) hears the other side of the story:
Not only do leaks drum up buzz and help customers make advance purchasing decisions (like whether to buy now or hold out for something coming down the pipe they'd prefer), it allows other companies to keep a closer eye on their competition. This means the marketplace is likelier to produce a product that's cheaper and/or better, if not also launched sooner. While that really sucks for the company whose products were leaked, it's ultimately really good for the consumer -- and that's who we represent. (Oh, and claiming leaks result in "a bunch of writers with no story" is actually kind of insulting to tech journos' collective intelligence.)
What we find really strange, though, is the attitude product people have about leaks totally "screwing up their efforts," which completely forsakes the early feedback they COULD be getting from their best and most engaged customers. This is precisely why some product "leaks" are actually plants to solicit unfiltered public feedback. (Yes, that really happens, although not very often.) That feedback can be positively unequaled in outing whether a product is on the right track, and we've been around long enough to know that if a product in its early stages isn't headed in the right direction, there's little chance it will be by the time it's released. Just remember that when you blame product leaks for ruining the launch of your next crappy device, okay?

Sure, you love your iPhone, but did you ever feel like there was just one application missing from the home screen... besides MMS, IM, or a video recorder? If you're like us, that missing application was a full-featured Packbot control program replete with streaming POV video and a standalone, direct WiFi connection that doesn't require a proxy machine to pass along commands. Rodrigo Guiterrez and Jeff Craighead -- the brains behind this operation -- claim that next up they plan to utilize the phone's accelerometers and a fullscreen video display to deliver a "you are there" experience for bot-steering. Engadget and its team of armed Packbots can hardly wait. Check the video after the break to see it in action.

Mercedes-Benz's current iPod integration kit is pretty weak sauce, especially since the new COMAND nav / multimedia system is so well done, but it looks like the automaker's newest iPhone cradle will take steps to address some of the more glaring issues and also add some interesting new features. The cradle appears to finally integrate iPod controls with the main nav screen and COMAND controller instead of relying solely on the instrument display and steering wheel controls, and it will charge your phone while allowing you to make calls and listen to music. On top of that, plugging the phone in will apparently increase reception by using the vehicle's antennas as well as the iPhone's, and from what we can tell, you'll be able to access the contacts list as well -- something MB's current Bluetooth system doesn't allow. If you've already got the iPod kit or Media Interface kit, the adapters needed will run you €39 ($60), and the cradle itself is available now in Germany for €249 ($385).

Unless you're very, very special, you haven't yet had an opportunity to run your hands over Openmoko's latest open-source creation, the FreeRunner, which was announced several months back with the hope of a spring release. Unlike the Neo1973 before it, the FreeRunner's said to be chock full of enough spit and polish to take on an audience larger than the original's hardcore developer base, and while a springtime date with destiny is now out of reach, it looks like they'll only miss the mark by a few days. A recent message from Openmoko's VP of marketing on the community listserv said that the retail phones should be packed and shipped by tomorrow and -- if all goes well, of course -- should clear customs by the first of July, meaning buyers should be able to get them delivered in the first week or two of the month. If they'd been able to squeeze in 3G, we'd hardly be able to contain ourselves, but even as it is, we suspect there's enough buzz to get units sold; let's just hope they're already hard at work on version three.

News from zodttd:
Hi everyone, ZodTTD here. Time to talk about the latest and greatest media player for the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch.
As the developer of this port of the VLC media player to the iPhone, I have received a lot of misinformation and a few questions along the way. Here is where I will try to clear things up.
What is vlc4iphone? vlc4iphone is a port of VLC, a media player made by the team over at VideoLAN, to the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch. VLC, and therefor vlc4iphone as well, includes many features. The biggest features include Internet Radio, Video On Demand (VoD) streaming, many popular media formats supported that are not available by default iPhone and iPod Touch installation, and no syncing is needed. You can drag and drop your media via SCP, a tool such as iPhoneBrowser, or even download via Safari and browse to the files with vlc4iphone!
What ISN'T vlc4iphone? vlc4iphone can not access the hardware decoder of the supported Apple hardware. While I will be talking about this more in the future, it's worth bringing up now. This is because all decoding of media must be done in software, with no hardware acceleration. Even with hardware acceleration, there is an imposed limit on the size of the synced video of which is just one format. Since vlc4iphone supports formats such as XviD, MP4, MOV, 3GP, FLV, and more all without re-encoding the file to a smaller resolution, it allows for a no hassle/wait playback. The downside of not re-encoding the video are some videos are in very high resolutions such as Hi-Def H264 movies. Since the current iPhone and iPod Touch's will only ever display at max 480 * 320 pixels, there is a chance that vlc4iphone may re-encode to 480x320 in the future when requested. This will allow for faster future playback on H264, XviD, and other intensive media formats. Until then, vlc4iphone is not meant for high resolution videos. The higher the resolution, the slower the playback.
Will vlc4iphone continue to improve? You bet! I am currently working on fixing a few remaining bugs, adding the mentioned re-encoding option, adding a portrait <--> landscape option, and cleaning up the interface.
What formats seem to play the best? For audio, you can play anything you throw at it! For video small resolution video formats such as the web friendly FLV (Flash Video) and camera 3GP work very well. So many video formats are supported, but it will depend on how it was encoded and to what resolution and bitrate.
You mentioned Internet Radio?! Yes! Shoutcast works. MMS protocol works. RTSP works. And a great feature is streaming media over HTTP. It all works!
Will performance continue to improve? Of course, as will the quality of code. When options such as re-encoding videos via the iPhone and iPod Touch are implemented, you will be less dependant on performance tweaks for Hi-Def videos as well.
Remember that this is still a beta. But it's progressing fast! The feature list grows with each release. I hope you find this application useful. I myself love the Shoutcast feature! I add a Shoutcast radio station and play it through my speaker docking station.

A couple of weeks back we revealed that Italian iPhone fans will be forking out a wallet-burning £395 and £450 for the pay-as-you-go (PAYG) 8GB and 16GB iPhones.
Today, it's been revealed - unofficially - that UK punters can expect to pay a slightly less, but no less painful, £370 for the 8GB model but a steeper £470 for the 16GB version. Ouch! indeed, but unlikely to dim fans' enthusiasm.

PocketCM is a finger friendly contact application for PDA phone, it will allow you to scroll to you list of contacts, call them and edit them. Actually it's the rewrite in native of ContactManager, a .NET version of a finger friendly contact.
A new version can be expected soon, here are news straight from the official page:
PocketCM Contact 0.24 is coming...
I've had some time to work on the next release of PocketCM Contact.
What's coming:
- contact image display in SMS conversation
- bug fixes in SMS handling
- enhanced black theme
- better handling of contact image
- new switch effect when going from/to contact detail
- the ability to apply mirror effect to image
- and of course, some breaking change in theming (but believe me it's for the better)
Other things to come, but I just wanted to keep you updated...

Some Gizmondo news at last
We set our moderation and staff team loose on Carl to see what they could draw out of him this time.
the below are our questions and as usual Carl's answers are quoted below.
Do you plan to harness or upgrade the GPS in current Gizmondo's or new Gizmondo's i.e.: Will you approach ALK again with CoPilot, look at other companies?
QUOTE
Yes, we want to upgrade the GPS in the new release. We are currently looking for a GPS partner.
Will we be seeing an improved GPS chip such as the SIRF 3 found in modern GPS units?
QUOTE
A new GPS chip will be included into the new version of the Giz
Will the Gizmondo Servers be back? Such as the Location based, where am I, or where is my nearest, services?
QUOTE
We are currently building out a worldwide server farm to minimize load times for users regardless of where they are located.
What is going to happen to SmartAds? Will we see it returning to the Gizmondo?
QUOTE
No
Will there be additional support for audio and video files on the Gizmondo such as the widely used Divx and Xvid?
QUOTE
We are discussing support for Xvid but currently the audio/video formats we are planning are the ones built in to the Windows Moble Media Player which include MP3 & WMA for audio and WMV and MPEG for video. Thus far, we have not discussed support for Divx.
Will the updated Gizmondo have WIFI or 3g capabilities?
QUOTE
The updated Gizmondo will have WIFI. We've looked at 3g but the 3g boards are really expensive to add and would put the Giz outside the pricepoint we are trying to stay within. We are looking at a external USB device that could be plugged into the Giz to provide 3g capabilities.
With the change in user interface will you be using the astonishing tribe http://www.tat.se <http://www.tat.se/> again?
QUOTE
Yes, we are upgrading the UI and are handling the entire redesign in house. We took a TON of feedback from Gizmondo users.
What support will you be giving to operating systems such as driver support? Last time we were stuck with using windows 98-XP will there be Mac, Linux and Windows Vista support?
QUOTE
The new Giz will be on Windows mobile, so there will be Vista support. Not sure yet on Mac or Linux versions yet. We are also looking at an Android version as well.
Will Gizmondo be producing its own software for purchase? Can you divulge any ideas or projects you have going?
QUOTE
Yes, we will be producing non-game titles. We will be happy to provide you with detail on any of our applications as they get closer to launch.
From our development community
Can you elaborate on what support you will be providing for developers and programs you will be initiating to draw them in before releasing to the public? The development guys really need specific details on this as soon as possible.
QUOTE
We will provide a very comprehensive SDK, free access to a new device for registered developers for testing. There will be a revenue share program for new titles as well as for Gizmondo peripherals. We are also going to launch a small venture fund for promising technologies/applications developed for the Gizmondo. We have been approached by several educational institutions who want to use the Giz for lifestyle testing, as a universal remote etc. As we said before, we are committed to developing the Giz as a platform and we want to encourage these creative ideas.
The last Gizmondo lacked any extra incentives for developers, thus its homebrew community was also diminished. Are there any extra incentives or programs for developers this time round?
QUOTE
There will be a chance for revenue share on any application built for the Gizmondo and sold/distributed through the website. We also have other marketing partners that have indicated they will want to partner with members in the development community.
Will developers be able to buy the Gizmondo 2.0 before the public release (Dev Unit), so that they can produce content for the community in time for the actual launch?
QUOTE
Yes. We will have dev units and the SDK available early in 3rd quarter.
Will there be any difference in a Developer Unit & a Normal Unit (or any other units for that matter)?
QUOTE
No, there won't be a difference between the units. All units will come unlocked.
Will there be any other specific resources to help developers get started developing with the Gizmondo 2.0 (e.g. SDK, Documentation, Forums/Developer Network...)?
QUOTE
Yes, we will offer all of these...SDK, Documentation, Forums/Developer Network.
I shall let this settle and see what people can ask next
Prospects of Android sound interesting though it would defiantly push the Gizmondo into a future market with the boom on that platform imminent a lot of money is being invested into android and Gizmondo backing it would mean we could get our hands on a first gaming android device.

Nokia (NOK1V.HE: Quote, Profile, Research) will pay $410 million (209 million pounds) for the remaining shares in UK-based Symbian and make its software royalty-free to boost phone sales and respond to new rivals such as Google (GOOG.O: Quote, Profile, Research).
Symbian's software is used in two-thirds of smartphones -- handsets with computer-like capabilities -- and 6 percent of all cellphones, but new platforms such as Google's Android and Apple's (AAPL.O: Quote, Profile, Research) iPhone could challenge its dominance.
"The move's a shrewd response to growing threats from other providers of mobile phone software," said Geoff Blaber of UK-based research firm CCS Insight, citing the open-source LiMo Foundation as well as Google and Apple.
Currently, Symbian's closest rival is Microsoft's (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) Windows Mobile operating system, which has just 13 percent of the market despite the U.S. software maker's efforts to gain market share.
Microsoft charges $8 to $15 per phone, according to research firm Strategy Analytics, while Symbian charges on average $4.10.
"This puts a lot of pressure on Microsoft right at a time when they are trying to really push into the consumer space," said Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi.
"Lower price points are what operators and the market need to push smartphone adoption and dropping royalty is going to help that. For operators this offers a good alternative to Android," she said.
Nokia, which makes 40 percent of all phones sold globally, will pay 264 million euros ($410 million) for the 52 percent of British-based Symbian it does not already own, it said.

The fact that the iPhone doesn't securely erase user data when you select "Erase All Content and Settings" has prompted a lot of hand-wringing (and given rise to a lot of complicated manual workarounds) as people get ready to flip their old phones and upgrade to the iPhone 3G, but it looks like there's a simpler solution coming: AppleInsider says the iPhone 2.0 software now securely erases user data. The process is apparently similar to Leopard's Secure Erase Trash feature, and it'll unlink data and overwrite it with random bits, making your personal info impossible to recover. Of course, that'll take some extra time -- you're looking at an extra hour of progress bars in your life. That's not so bad -- and if it keeps anyone from checking out our super-embarassing 80s pop playlists, we're all for it.

Last week we reported that UK punters were facing the prospect of shelling out £370 and £470 for the forthcoming 8GB and 16GB iPhone 3G but today the news is so much better.
O2 has revealed that the new 8Gb and 16GB iPhones will cost £300 and £360, a reduction on earlier reports of £70 and £110, respectively. And, even though you're not prepared to pay for the hefty monthly contracts, both phones will come with 6 months of unlimited browsing and Wi-Fi access.
PAYG users will then be able to retain those services for £10 per month after the 6 months is up.
Makes you glad not be an Italian, considering they're going to be charged £395 and £450.
Big thanks to crack Gizmodo readers [Vince, Nicky, Dayks & Rich] for the heads-up.-Martin Lynch
UPDATE: O2 has pulled the pricing details from its PAYG iPhone 3G page. A mistake? Is some O2 Web manager getting a sound thrashing right now for jumping the gun? I know one thing, O2 will get some stick from all of us in the media if it republishes higher prices than it did earlier.

iPhone 3G is expected to carry an initial hardware Bill Of Materials (BOM) and manufacturing cost of $173 [£87], according to a “virtual teardown” conducted by iSuppli.
The company says the figure comes in 23 per cent cheaper than the original iPhone, for which it pegged per unit manufacturing cost at $226.
iSuppli says Apple’s iPod and iPhone products are typically priced about 50 per cent more than their BOM and manufacturing costs. This means that with the new 8GB iPhone 3G sold at $199 and the estimated subsidy of $300, Apple will achieve an even higher BOM/manufacturing margin.
Moreover, iSuppli says fluctuations in component pricing mean the BOM/manufacturing cost of the second-generation iPhone will fall 37 per cent to $148 in 2009.
iSuppli's full iPhone 3G cost breakdown is as follows:
- $22.80 8Gbyte NAND Flash Memory
- $20.00 Improved Touch screen
- $20.00 Display
- $13.50 Application Processor
- $5.00 1Gbit SDRAM - Mobile DDR
- $15.00 HSDPA Digital Baseband
- $7.00 2 Megapixel Camera Module
- $4.00 WLAN chipset
- $4.00 Battery
- $3.60 GPS
- $2.00 Motion Sensor / Accelerometer
- $4.25 RF Transceiver
- $1.89 64Mbit NOR Flash Memory, 32Mbit PSRAM
- $1.80 Charger (USB)
- $2.00 Bluetooth 2.0 + Enhanced Data Rate (EDR)
$126.84 Total of Above Items- $37.16 Other Costs
- $164.00 Total Bill of Materials (BOM) Costs (Direct Materials Only)
$173.00 [£87] Total BOM & Manufacturing Costs
$199 [£100] Initial retail price, 8Gbyte Version

This application allows you to read large Text (.txt,.text), Palm Doc (.pdb), Mobipocket (.pdb,.prc,.mobi), Plucker (.pdb), HTML (.htm,.html), and Fiction Book (.fb2) files quickly and efficiently on the iPhone/Touch. This application doesn't have the fancy formatting of ruBooks or Books.app, but it can quickly load and display large text files that currently cause Books.app or other UI Text View/Web View based apps problems. If you want to load books quickly and read text, this may be the app for you.
Changes:
* Now supports (non-DRM) eReader/Peanut Press PDB files
* Now supports Rich Text RTF files
* Better formatting for Text, HTML, Mobipocket, FB2, Plucker, and Palm Doc files
* Optionally display background files from the /Applications/textReader.app/images directory when reading text
* Optionally allows use of pinch/stretch gestures to shrink/zoom text
* Better management of cache files Add option to force creation of a cache file when opening. You can always reopen a cache file even when you change the encoding settings because they are stored as Unicode.
* Improved indentation and formatting code

Analysts love to come up with all sorts of conjecture based on history, numbers, and general guesswork. In this case, FBR Research analyst Craig Berger has a few predictions to give us regarding the future of Apple's iPod and iPhone lines. We'll keep them short and sweet here and leave the static mulling to you. First, he expects an updated, lower-priced iPod nano in the near future along with product refreshes for both the iPod classic and touch. That sounds about right, as Apple is almost due for updates of those products anyway. As far as Apple's production rate, he says Apple has increased iPod production around 15 percent and sees Apple shipping 15 million iPhone 3G by the end of the year (he's a big fan of the number "15"). Nothing really surprising here, but if all this pans out, Apple will dig deeper into the smart phone market while tightening its stranglehold on the PMP landscape.

Changes:
Adds support for CHM and ZIP files. Since both of these files are "containers" for other files, they will be "exploded" into a cache directory, and you can then navigate the directory and open, delete, etc. any file you want. Because they are tag'd as a cache directory, you can delete the cache with or without the original file. When a cache directory exists, you'll only see it - you won't see the original ZIP or CHM file. This is VERY preliminary code, so let me know how it works. I have a bad feeling about NLS/International character support for file names - both for the ZIP/CHM file and for their contents, but try it and let me know how it looks.
Adds an option "File Scroll" to allow a left-to-right swipe in the middle of the screen to open the previous file, and a right-to-left swipe to open the next file in the directory. This isn't particularly pretty, but I can't get a nice animation to work while I'm processing the file. Feel free to check out the code if you know anything about iPhone programming ... Anyway, right now it will go the the last saved location for the file, and will show cover art if it exists. I'll leave it up to the users (all 3 of you) to decide if this is how it ought to work.
There were some comments that the "delete" button was too sensitive (i.e. it would appear when scrolling). I have tried to tighten up the location of the swipe so that you should be able to scroll without problem if you keep your finger on the left 2/3 of the screen. Again, let me know if this is reasonable, or if I need to look into doing something else.

For the smattering of Canadians wealthy enough to pick up an iPhone 3G from Rogers Wireless without worrying over the lack of an unlimited data plan, we've stumbled across what appears to be internal verbiage detailing the in-store activation process. Quite frankly, there doesn't seem to be any real surprises here, but it is somewhat interesting that retail locations will be required to download and use a special version of iTunes with an "Activation Only Mode," which will enable employees to unbrick the mobiles before customers leave. In any case, feel free to hit the read link if you're anxious to know exactly what the sure-to-be-hair-raising experience will be like come July 11th.

Well that didn't take long. Just a little over a week after announcing his departure from Electronic Arts, former EA Blueprint head Neil Young – an 11-year veteran of the mega-publisher – has revealed his latest gig: ngmoco. Never heard of it? Well, that's because it's brand new; however, if Mr. Young and every other business-minded human eying up the iPhone market is right, you'll be hearing plenty about ngmoco.
First, what's the name mean? Young tells Newsweek that it stands for "Next Generation MObile COmpany" (what, you didn't totally see that the first time?). Alright, but what does that mean? He tells Gamasutra the company is a "publisher that is specifically focused on games for the iPhone and beyond." So, not just the iPhone, but "that class of mobile phone" – touch screen, network connectivity, accelerometer, et al. Young isn't looking to develop games at ngmoco, but rather to commission, finance, and produce titles, hoping the brand name and institutional knowledge will help ngmoco's titles remain visible in what he expects to be a busy, competitive marketplace.
Most interestingly, he talks about how Apple's forthcoming AppStore will rebalance the mobile gaming industry's reliance on carriers. Now, he says, the average revenue per user on mobile phones is "$7.50 or $8" compared to $45 on the PSP and $62 on the DS, leaving a great deal of potential there given the right product.
