The iPad has sold over 300,000 units in its first day on sale, according to Apple figures.
The portable touch screen device went on sale in US shops on Saturday, April 3 and, by midnight, had reached the 300k mark.
Over one million iPad apps were downloaded from the App Store throughout the day, and 250,000 ebooks from the iBookstore were purchased.
"It feels great to have the iPad launched into the world - it's going to be a game changer," said Apple CEO Steve Jobs. "iPad users, on average, downloaded more than three apps and close to one book within hours of unpacking their new iPad."
As the device launched, Unity Technologies announced the release of development platform iPhone 1.7, which comes with iPad deployment for both Unity iPhone Basic and Unity iPhone Advanced and iPad Simulator support.
According to Unity, more than 15 Unity-authored iPad specific games have launched on the App Store already, including three games from Infinite Dreams.
"We were able to get our games submitted and accepted to the iPad App Store without ever seeing hardware," said Seweryn Panczyniak, lead programmer at Infinite Dreams. "Unity is a wonderful piece of software that let us do things fast and with minimum level of frustration and maximum level of creativity."
Gameloft had eight gaming apps ready for the iPad upon its release, including NOVA and Asphalt 5.
"With iPhone and iPod touch, Apple changed the way consumers perceive and interact with their devices and created a revolutionary era for the mobile gaming industry," said Michel Guillemot, president of Gameloft. "We are taking full advantage of all the new possibilities and features iPad is bringing to developers with games that will once again transform the digital gaming experience."
The UK is expected to see the release of the iPad at the end of April, when both the Wi-Fi and 3G versions on the device will reach its shores.

The app provides most of the features from the PC version of the company's service and gives iPhone users access to the entire music library on the go.
In Norway the WiMP streaming music service is provided by Aspiro and Platekompaniet in cooperation with Telenor.
It's already available for PC, Mac, Linux and Android-based handsets, giving users unlimited access to music for 99 kroner a month.
Users can save their favourites and playlists, and share with their friends via Facebook or Twitter.
Per Einar Dybvik, Head of Aspiro Music, said: "In our experience, the average processing time at Apple is a couple of weeks. We believe we have followed all the guidelines for the AppStore, so we hope that the client thus can be available to our customers shortly."

The iPad is now supported on Stonetrip’s ShiVa 3D engine license. The engine now supports all major available platforms under one license.
“On March 18th we added Android development capabilities to ShiVa 3D and today we’re expanding the development capabilities again for our users by adding iPad development capabilities and support,†said Stonetrip CEO Philip Belhassen.
“The market is very competitive and having powerful tools early gives developers the opportunity to compete and have a first mover advantage on emerging platforms. We will continue to add additional platforms under our single license per developer strategy.â€

Digital Chocolate is the latest iPhone games publisher to experiment with a freemium pricing model, in a new version of its Fantasy Warrior franchise. Fantasy Warrior Legends is the company's first freemium title for iPhone, although it's long had a strategy of releasing free Lite demos alongside its paid games on the App Store.
The game, an RPG, sees players battling orcs, skeletons and the like in forests and dungeons. Players require gems to power their weapons and armour, which is where the freemium element comes in - they can buy more gems using in-app payments.
The game also uses Aurora Feint's OpenFeint social platform to provide online high-scores and achievements.
Fantasy Warrior Legends follows in the footsteps of other freemium iPhone games, including Eliminate Pro, Skies of Glory and We Rule.

Social games platform provider Scoreloop has announced an update to its Core Social SDK, allowing developers and publishers to offer downloadable content and in-game currencies.
Two games are already making use of the new features: Parachute Panic HD and Astro Ranch.
Of course, developers can already offer this stuff using Apple's own in-app payments API. The key to Scoreloop's SDK is whether it makes this easier for them.
"This is exactly what they've been looking for: a set of creative tools that improve the visibility of their games, connect their users for increased engagement and drive revenues through exposure to millions of users," says CEO Marc Gumpinger.
In Parachute Panic's case, developer FDG Entertainment is offering unlockable themes for players who challenge their friends, along with an in-game currency.

Insurance firm Swiftcover says its iPhone app has helped two hikers find each other in snowbound Swedish mountains after they became separated.
The app, which is called Stuck, uses geo-location tech to allow people to post a Twitter-style message about their locations or situations. This info is then uploaded to a map of the world with a time stamp.
Other iPhone users can then click on the stamp and, using Google maps, zoom in to locate the person who posted the Stuck.
So when Nico Vittorio and Paul Alonso became separated in the Sarek National Park region of Sweden they pair used Stuck’s ‘Near-Me’ function – which flags up other users nearby – to locate each other, tracking their progress until their paths met.
The app was developed by swiftcover.com’s innovation lab and has been downloaded 10,000 times since it was launched in January.

A lot of the big iPad launch games are new versions of existing iPhone games with better graphics and a few new features.
Which is fine, but it's good to see that some publishers are debuting entirely new games for Apple's tablet too.
Tapulous, for example. The company is best known for its Tap Tap Revenge music games on iPhone, although it diversified recently with Riddim Ribbon, a game built around the Black Eyed Peas.
Its first iPad game is called Tap Tap Radiation, and it builds on the success of Tap Tap Revenge. It's another music game, with more than 50 free and premium tracks available to tap along to, including songs by Mos Def, David Guetta and Pink.
Oh, and Lady Gaga - there's a six-song download pack available, including monster hits Telephone, Bad Romance and Poker Face.

Today the iPad was launched in the United States, meaning the eagerly awaited Apple tablet is now in the hands of the public. Based on the relative success of previous gadgets released by Steve Job's company, that means that either an industry is set to be revolutionised (iPod anyone?) or underwhelmed (Apple TV).
Currently in the US just the wi-fi only version is available, priced at between $499 for the 16GB model and $699 for the 64GB device. 3G models are set to arrive in late April, meaning many more patient consumers may well be waiting before they purchase.
Of course, games optimised for – or exclusively for – the iPad will now be rolling out the App Store, but numbers and sales are yet to be confirmed, and will likely remain shrouded in mystery for quite some time.

The iPad sold over 300,000 in its first day on sale in the US, according to Apple.
iPad launched on April 3rd to the customary hype - people queued outside Apple's retail stores for hours beforehand, hundreds of developers launched download apps for the device, and the media spent the Easter weekend mulling over whether or not the device would have as much impact as the iPhone before it.
Apple certainly thinks the release is a momentous event - even if that 300K sales figure comes in beneath analysts' projections of over half a million sold.
“It feels great to have the iPad launched into the world—it’s going to be a game changer,†said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, in a statement.
“iPad users, on average, downloaded more than three apps and close to one book within hours of unpacking their new iPad.â€
He's not wrong about the speed with which iPad owners have consumed media - iTunes saw over a million apps downloaded for the large-scale touchscreen, and 250,000 ebook sales through the iBookstore.
While it's a US-only product for now, current rumours suggest the device may be launching as soon as April 24th in the UK.

Apple's iPad has already sold 300K units in just a day on sale in the US - but the firm has been tight lipped on the exact date of a UK roll out.
However entertainment and celebrity news site Digital Spy reckons the date for UK launch is soon - April 24th in fact.
The site says a 'source close to Apple' has tipped it off on the news.
Apple has not confirmed the claim as yet - but it had previously said the device will hit the UK in April, not long after the initial US launch.
And it is due to detail more about the iPhone 4.0 OS on Thursday this week. Apple could potentially flesh out its global iPad roll out plans at the same time.
It's not yet known what UK pricing for the device will be, but estimates range from £380 upwards, depending on the model/capacity.

Is iPhone planning to make a physical gaming accessory for iPhone, iPod touch or even iPad?
That's the gist of a patent application by the company, which came to light last Thursday. And yes, we've run our April Fool's filter on it, and it appears to be genuine.
The patent shows several physical devices, which act as cases for portable electronic devices (i.e. iPhones). They have physical buttons and D-pads, as well as vibration and camera functions.
There's even one design that looks just like a DS, with the iPhone acting as one of two screens.
It's intriguing stuff, although it's already caused a rumpus. The firm behind the iControlPad accessory blogged last Friday that "We were very surprised to see that Apple have allegedly filed a patent for our original iControlPad design some 6 months after we revealed it".
Founder Craig Rothwell has since tweeted that he plans to post a YouTube video "speaking directly to Apple" - albeit only after getting advice from the company's lawyer.

Apple’s new device reportedly ‘jailbroken’ just hours after it debuted at US retail
An existing loophole used to crack the security features of the iPhone has allowed hackers to jailbreak the iPad just hours after Apple’s new tablet device hit the US.
Known American iPhone hacker MuscleNerd has, as spotted by TechRadar, already posted videos online that appear to show him running unsigned code on the machine, meaning that all manner of software – including pirated games and emulators – can now be booted.
Though the hack is only possible for those with a high level of technical knowledge for the time being, it is expected that a user-friendly jailbreak solution could hit the internet in a matter of days.
“A jailbreak was expected following the iPad's launch, but the rapid discovery has shown that the iPhone 3.2 firmware used on the device hasn't patched all of the security holes that were present in the 3.1.3 code,†the site claims.
Famed iPhone hacker George Hotz claimed recently that he expected to produce an iPad hack shortly after the device’s release but has thus far been quiet ion the subject.

Cobra Mobile has detailed its launch line-up of iPad games in the same week that the outsized iPhone relative debuted on US retailers' shelves. Two iPhone titles by the developer – Low Grav Racer 2 and Numba – have been specifically remade for the iPad, and are for sale for relatively low prices that contrast the typical $9.99 price tag that many games for the Apple tablet boast.
Additionally, and original iPad game named Pukk has been created.
"Gaming just got better," enthused Cobra's Mark Ettle. "The iPad is the future of gaming, our launch day line up of iPad titles really showcase's what the iPad can do, from console quality racing games, family friendly puzzlers to simple 2-player, play anywhere games. The iPad is a whole new experience in entertainment from books to movies to games, the market just got bigger, better and brighter"
Priced at $4.99 Low Grav Racer 2 HD now features new ships, textures, controls, audio, track layout's, motion blur, real-time reflections and more sophisticated race AI. Meanwhile 99c 'match-three' title Numba HD includes new screen resolution for the iPad, and free Pong homage Pukk is designed to offer early adopters of the tablet an accessible and immediate two-player game.

Apple has just patented a design for an iPhone gaming add-on after admitting that the iPhone is somewhat hard to use as a games machine. The catch is that the design is not theirs. It was designed by a team of gaming aficionados, one member of which, Craig 'craigix' Rothwell of OpenPandora fame, is already twittering like mad about the shot just fired by Apple in their direction. The iControlPad team are in contact with their IP lawyer, since their design is already in production. Will Apple still try to steamroll right through them?

ThinkGeek has announced a cool new accessory for that iPad you're too ashamed to be seen buying in the Apple Store. iCade is an arcade cabinet/dock that lets you play all your favorite vintage arcade games at your desk, on the airplane, or in the bathroom with an authentic look and feel. Games are still being licensed, but iCade's launch titles include Dig Dug, Donkey Kong, Q-Bert, and everyone's favorite, Super Steve Brothers. Quarters, thick veil of cigarette smoke, and annoying eight-year-olds are not included.

You better believe it when notorious iPhone jailbreaker MuscleNerd -- a well-respected member of the iPhone Dev-Team -- declares root access on an iPad. According to this fella's tweets, this new hack is a port of Comex's "Spirit" jailbreak that exploits a bug found on both iPhone OS 3.1.3 and the iPad's 3.2. No downloads are offered right at this moment, but it shouldn't be long before we can throw in all sorts of wild apps and widgets as we wish.

We're pretty sure this isn't an April Fool's joke, and we're pretty sure that it could be. Essentially an iPhone dock that sits on your face like a pair of glasses, "Head-Mounted Display Apparatus for Retaining a Portable Electronic Device with Display" details a headset that contains a stereo display and either a camera or a window for your phone's camera. Also included in the patent application is a microphone, speaker, batteries, and an accelerometer for detecting the user's head movements. Something like this would be great for augmented reality applications -- and something like this would make ever getting a date that much more difficult. We'll let you know if this one ever makes it past the drawing board, folks.

This one needs very little explication indeed. Netflix has just officially confirmed that its currently iPad-only app will be trickling down to the smaller iPhone OS devices. It's all very teasing and noncommittal as far as the timeframe goes, but who's not excited about getting the "dessert" to the iPad's main course?

It doesn't appear to do anything groundbreaking like overclock your Pre, but it looks like the webOS 1.4.1 update is now starting to trickle out to at least a few lucky users. According to PreCentral, one of the first reports to come in was from a Pre user who also happened to be one of the first to get the webOS 1.4 update while he was in Vietnam, and has now managed to snag the 1.4.1 update while residing in Holland. That was later followed up with a second report from a Sprint customer in Washington, but things seem to have been relatively quiet since them. Still no official word from Palm either, but the update does seem to be as minor as the number revision suggestions, with it weighing in at just 6MB. Receive yours yet? Let us know in comments.
Update: So that's what the update does -- according to Recombu, the update should allow European webOS users to finally spend their hard-earned quids and Euros on paid apps. PreCentral additionally reports that O2 Germany customers can now download the Mobile Hotspot app. Cheers!
Update 2: We're getting a 1.4.1.1 10mb patch on our Sprint Pre as we speak, while a list of changes has arrived on Palm.com with one notable difference -- the old NFL Mobile App has been renamed Sprint Football Live -- but otherwise it appears to be the same. Meanwhile the word on PreCentral is that Verizon customers may be in for a wait of up to a few weeks for their own update, so slowing the pace of update checks to just once every 5 minutes would appear to be a reasonable course of action.

Hot on the heels of a ginormous OS X update comes this, the freshest version of the music management software that everyone loves to hate. iTunes 9.1 is live and available to download, bringing with it support for iPad syncing (you know, that little tablet that arrives on Saturday?) as well as the ability to "organize and sync books you've downloaded from iBooks on iPad or added to your iTunes library." The new version also gives users the ability to rename, rearrange, or remove Genius Mixes, but we're fairly sure you stopped caring after hearing the first point. It's weighing in at around 97.3MB (give or take a few KB), so fire up Software Update and get it going... if you dare.
Update: We're hearing that the new version renames "Applications" to just "Apps" and the Genius Mixes / iPhone / iPod touch sync pages have been retooled. Anything else major? Let us know in comments!

With Palm's Pre Plus (model P101) and Pixi Plus (model P121) already granted US domicile by their FCC host, it's only natural that they'd seek adventure elsewhere before getting serious and going to work for AT&T. Now the Global Certification Forum (GFC) has approved what must be the European versions of Palm's Plus handsets: models P101UEU and P121UEU. Both are quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE as well as dual-band UMTS/HSDPA on the 2100/900MHz frequencies. Now if only Palm could get a few more carriers and countries on board it might actually move some meaningful device quantities in Europe.

SMobile Parental Controls provides parents with insight into the mobile activities of their children while also providing protection to their child's phone with Antivirus and Antispam functionality. The program collects data from the child's device and uploads it to a Dashboard that is accessible via the Internet. The parent can also configure e-mail alerts, where messages containing customized keywords, such as drugs, sex, alcohol, etc., or messages that originate from or are destined to specific addressees can be automatically e-mailed to the parent. The Parental Control Dashboard allows parents to view:
* The contents of e-mail messages
* The contents of SMS text messages
* The contents of MMS text messages
* Phone logs of all voice conversations
* Address book entries in the contact list
* Applications installed on the device
* Photos stored on the device.
Included with SMobile Parental Controls is SMobile PointGuard, which blocks unwanted text messages and voice calls. This feature is beneficial for stopping spam, though also useful for blocking communication from undesirable sources such as bullies, or unapproved friends. Also included is VirusGuard, which provides users with real time protection against Malware threats by automatically scanning mobile devices to ensure files are not infected with Malware.

ScummVM has been updated, heres what it is for those who dont know what it is:

ScummVM is a program which allows you to run certain classic graphical point-and-click adventure games, provided you already have their data files. The clever part about this: ScummVM just replaces the executables shipped with the games, allowing you to play them on systems for which they were never designed!
Some of the adventures ScummVM supports include Adventure Soft's Simon the Sorcerer 1 and 2; Revolution's Beneath A Steel Sky and Broken Sword I & II; Flight of the Amazon Queen; Wyrmkeep's Inherit the Earth; Coktel Vision's Gobliiins; Westwood Studios' The Legend of Kyrandia and games based on LucasArts' SCUMM (Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion) system such as Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max and more. You can find a thorough list with details on which games are supported and how well on the compatibility page. ScummVM is continually improving, so check back often.
Its out for most consoles we cover which are:
Dreamcast
Nintendo DS
Apple Iphone/Ipod Touch
PSP
PS2
N64
S60/UIQ Phones
Heres the release news:
Another 4 months passed, a lot of hard work done... and finally it is here: ScummVM 1.1.0 is available now on our downloads page.
There are some pretty exciting new features: We added support for 16bit graphics, which allowed us to add support for a whole bunch of newer Humongous Entertainment games for kids. We also added or improved support for the Amiga versions of Monkey Island, Legend of Kyrandia and Future Wars. Plus there are two completely new engines for the games Dragon History (available for free from here) and TeenAgent (available for free from GOG.com). And finally there is now a port for the Nintendo 64 game console!
Take a look at the release notes if you want to know a bit more.
There is one grain of salt, though: If you want to play Nippon Safes Inc, we recommend that you stick with your current ScummVM version for now, as there are some nasty regressions in there which may even make it impossible to complete the game. Also the background music in Pajama Sam 1 isn't working correctly in the Kitchen and Mine areas anymore.
We are not happy about that, but in the end decided that we should not let this hold up the other new cool stuff we added. Instead, we will follow up this release in about four weeks with a 1.1.1 release that should fix these issues. In fact, you can help us make 1.1.1 even better by reporting any bugs you might encounter in 1.1.0.
Heres whats new in this release:
1.1.0 (2010-04-04)
New Games:
- Added support for Blue's Art Time Activities.
- Added support for Blue's Reading Time Activities.
- Added support for Freddi Fish 5: The Case of the Creature of Coral Cove.
- Added support for Pajama Sam: Games to Play on Any Day.
- Added support for SPY Fox 3: Operation Ozone.
- Added support for Dragon History.
- Added support for TeenAgent.

Apple may be forced to recall their brand new iPad after thousands of users have complained they cannot use their tablet computers to connect to the internet.
This has rendered many of the features of the £326 device useless.
Hundreds have posted comments on Apple's website saying they cannot get a wi-fi signal and that they are having problems re-charging the battery and uploading applications.
Others complained that their devices were overheating and the screen was showing a message that read: 'iPad needs to cool down before you can use it'.
Customers activate their iPads at an Apple Store in Palo Alto, California. Hundreds have posted comments on Apple's website saying they cannot get a wi-fi signal and that they are having problems re-charging the battery and uploading applications
More than 300,000 iPads - called 'the laptop killer' by some reviewers - have been sold in the U.S. since its launch on Saturday.
However, British fans, who will be able to buy the device from the end of the month, may want to wait until some of the glitches have been sorted out.
Technology expert Brennon Slattery from Macworld said: 'A massive recall many be necessary if the problem persists.'
He added that Apple may have to physically replace the antenna in the iPad to improve wi-fi reception.
From Los Angeles, aa514 wrote: 'All my devices, two laptops and iPhone have a strong signal, but my iPad does not connect to the internet at home at all and has a weak connection at work.'
Another user - andyspocket from Nashville, Tennessee - wrote: 'I never imagined how USELESS this device is without connection - can basically only type notes in notepad app.
'I made an appointment with Apple Store and they replaced my iPad with a new one. Fingers crossed for better luck on this one.'
Apple has updated its support website in response to the complaints. They state: 'Under certain conditions, iPad may not automatically rejoin a known Wi-Fi network after restart or waking from sleep. This can occur with some third-party Wi-Fi routers that are dual-band capable when: * Using the same network name for each network; * Using different security settings for each network.'
They suggest giving each Wi-Fi band a different SSID name but both bands to have the security type.
Apple has dealt with wi-fi problems before in early versions of the MacBook Air.
Launch pad: Apple staff in San Francisco open the door as the device goes on sale for the first time. By the end of day more than 300,000 had been sold
The initial version of the iPad is only able to link to the internet via its wi-fi antenna. A new 3G version is due out later this month.
Some users have speculated the problem may be that the antenna is located behind the Apple logo on the back of the $499 (£325) device.
Michael Arrington, editor of the blog TechCrunch, reported 'scores of complaints' - and said he too was having difficulties with his wireless connection.
He said: 'My understanding of wi-fi issues on devices, particularly cramped devices like the MacBook Air and iPad, is that it’s usually a hardware/design issue and something that can’t be fixed via a software patch.'
One disgruntled user wrote: 'I have rebooted the iPad three times, doesn't help. My Macbook is running on the same wi-fi network just fine. Not spending $500 on something I can't even use. It's going back tomorrow.'

News via http://0xff.akop.org/2010/04/05/on-t...rk-psn-update/
I’ve found a fairly serious issue with scrolling on the Nexus One that’s forcing me to reconsider several things. First, it looks like scrolling works differently on the phone (at the moment I’m not sure if it’s the phone itself, or the firmware) – the ListView is not receiving the IDLE event if the user stops scrolling with his/her finger. End result of this is that if you stop scrolling with your finger (as opposed to waiting until scrolling stops automatically), Spark will not load un-cached icons. The (elegant) solution to this appears to be more complicated than one would hope – after some testing, I’ve decided to completely change how icons are loaded, which is going to take a considerable amount of time (a large number of activities use scrolling lists).
On the plus side, having the phone has allowed me to fix a lot of the issues that Droid and Nexus One users have been reporting for a while now – namely the ’star’ corruption on the profiles, and the lack of high-resolution icons. The next version of Spark is optimized for medium- and high-resolution screens – the only drawback to this is that it is no longer likely to work on firmware 1.5 – it will require 1.6 or higher (this should be a non-issue for most users).

Voice Coach application uses GPS and a stopwatch to track your performance when you are jogging, skiing, roller-skating, etc. It supports you and informs about your progress or race position in a clear human voice (English and Finnish). You can select one of the three modes: chasing a target, competing in an own route, or participating in a real race.

Sales of the Apple iPad are expected to reach 20m units by 2012, according to analyst iSuppli.
The firm expects unit sales to hit 7.1m by the end of the year and 14.4m by the close of 2011.
It adds that these numbers are ‘conservative’ estimates and reckons that actual sales could exceed these numbers if Apple adds new features to the device, most notably Flash support.
“The iPad represents an intriguing mix of two devices that have struggled to gain traction for years – internet appliances and tablet PCs,†monitor research director Rhoda Alexander stated.
“2010 sales could potentially climb much higher than the seven million figure, and that first year success – combined with expected ongoing innovation – will help to keep Apple at the forefront of the tablet market for several years. Key to continuing success will be how quickly Apple responds to issues as they arise and whether the company can align suppliers to meet demand needs.â€
Day one sales of the iPad in the US reached 300k upon its release on April 3rd.

Several universities and commercial entities are developing multimodal, multitouch games, such as a card game using iPhones for individual hands and an iPad for public information, and an iPad Scrabble game that lets you use your iPhone to see your letter tiles. Of course, it's an extremely expensive setup right now, but over time it will become cheaper. It's also pretty cool, so why wouldn't you want to play board/card/strategy games like this?

Judging from our recent poll, a sizable number of folks have had problems with their iPad losing its WiFi connection, and Apple has now confirmed that such an issue does exist -- although it's not exactly saying there's any problems with the iPad itself. According to a new knowledge base article, the issue is known to occur with some third-party dual-band WiFI routers, and tends to happen if you're the same name for each network or different security settings for each network. To ensure your iPad automatically rejoins WiFi networks, Apple suggests (you guessed it) giving the networks different names, and making sure that they're using the same security settings. Of course, that doesn't explain why other devices are able to work just fine with said routers, but this looks to be the most we'll get out of Apple for the time being.
P.S. At least some users have also reported some success in fixing the issue by simply turning up the brightness on their iPad (of all things), but Apple doesn't seem to be recommending that as a solution.

You're looking at Super Mario Kart, running on the Apple iPad, courtesy of emulation guru ZodTTD. When do you get to play it, faithful reader? Hard to tell. If, say, the iPad had already been jailbroken, all you'd need to do is wait for a suitably safe jailbreak method, download RockApp or Cydia, grab the snes4iphone emulator you see running above, and fire up the ROM. However, the intriguing thing about the above video is not that it's running an SNES game -- but that ZodTTD claims he compiled a special version of his snes4iphone emulator "specifically for non-jailbroken iDevices." Since Zod is almost certainly an official developer, it's possible he output the emulator as an .ipa file and is testing it on a fresh iPad using Apple developer tools, but if we're lucky, it could instead mean that someone has finally found a way to sideload apps onto a stock Apple device. Either way, peep multitouch karts sliding and shells flying on video, right after the break.
Update: ZodTTD tells us that while he does have access to the jailbreak, he did have to flex developer muscle (and official dev tools) to make snes4iphone work on a non-jailbroken iPad. He says:
The build of snes4iphone running on my iPad as seen in the video was actually based on an AppStore app I submitted called "snesty". Apple quickly rejected it right after pulling the NES emulator. I combined snesty with some snes4iphone features such as using the private API called CoreSurface. I used Apple developer tools and self signed it.
Zod says that after Apple officially releases iPhone OS 4.0 and the existing jailbreak is distributed freely, he plans to create new versions of his emulators that run at the iPad's 1024 x 768 native resolution and support touchscreen controls, hardware keyboards and even external controllers should they come.

PayPal has announced that its PayPal Mobile iPhone app has been downloaded more than one million times since its release in mid-March.
The app lets people transfer money from their PayPal account, while also splitting restaurant bills, collecting money for events and donating to charities.
It also uses the Bump API, allowing people to transfer money by bumping their iPhones together.
"One million downloads shows just how ready people are to live a cashless and card-free culture with their wallet living safely in the cloud," says PayPal's VP of platform and emerging technology Osama Bedier.
It'll be interesting to see how much money is being transferred using the app - hopefully PayPal will release that kind of stat later in the year, once the app has been out for a few months.

You heard that right, people -- iPhone OS 4 just brought multitasking to the platform! Apple says they've figured out how to implement third party multitasking without hurting performance or battery life, and they're demoing it now -- you just double click the home button and see a list of your apps, and you can just tap to switch between apps. The system actually runs the services apps need in the background -- the apps don't need to do them individually, so it's not a "true" multitasking system, but it seems plenty effective. There are seven services: background audio, which allows you to use the standard pop-over iPod controls, Voice over IP, which can receive calls in the background, location services for GPS and social networking (there's an indicator if any service is tracking you), updated push notifications with local notifications, task completion so you can finish things like uploads in the background, and fast app switching, which lets apps sleep and resume instantly. Notably missing? Anything for managing a conversation, like IM or Twitter, which is a big omission. Win some, lose some, we suppose.
Update: Here's a big "lose some" -- only the iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 3G will support multitasking. The iPhone 3G and below won't -- Steve says the hardware doesn't support it. Sad face.

All that great stuff we just heard about iPhone OS 4.0: multitasking, tentpoles, app folders, Game Center, iAd -- okay, maybe you weren't all that excited about iAd -- seem destined to dodge the iPad all the way until the Fall. Instead of finishing with his usual "one more thing" flourish today, Steve Jobs just left a stunned audience with the terse statement that Apple will be "bringing OS 4 to the iPad this Fall." Now, that doesn't necessarily mean that you'll be deprived of all those goodies above. It may be that the Game Center or other features sneak into the iPad ahead of time. But the full-featured OS 4.0 experience? Only on the iPhone 3GS and 3rd gen iPod touch.

If you were wondering exactly what Apple had in mind with its acquisition of Quattro Wireless a few months back, the picture gets a little clearer today with the announcement of the iAd mobile ad platform alongside iPhone OS 4.0 today with the company saying that iPhone devs have a billion "ad opportunities" per day. The idea is to keep users in the apps to see interactive, "emotional" ad content as often as once every three minutes -- not to "yank" them out, as Steve puts it -- while developers are rewarded with a 60 percent cut of the revenue. Ads are hosted and served by Apple, and while there'll be some sort of approval process, Steve's describing it as a "light touch," so it probably isn't the same process traditional apps go through. This makes things considerably more interesting for the mobile advertising business as a whole, since Google's been trying to seal the deal on an acquisition of industry leader AdMob for a while now in the face of some pretty intense FTC scrutiny. Certainly seems like this would grease the wheel a little bit, doesn't it?

Apple has revealed a new games-focused social network service called Game Center as part of its preview of the new iPhone OS 4 software.
Game Center allows developers to create apps with the ability to invite friends to play a game, start a multiplayer game through a matchmaking service and track achievements and high scores on an online leaderboard. The new service will be available later this year.
All these features are currently offered by a range of competing third party apps, but Game Center will create a centralised system and offer a standard set of APIs.
Apart from the benefits of standardisation this also represents a rare intervention by Apple itself in promoting increased game functionality and may indicate a growing interest in the games market by the company.
Other features of the OS 4 software include the long-awaited addition of multitasking for third party apps, folders to better organise apps and a unified inbox for e-mail.
"iPhone OS 4 is the fourth major release of the world's most advanced mobile operating system," said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. "We’re delivering over 100 new features, including multitasking, folders, a unified inbox, deeper Enterprise support, and an iPhone version of our iBooks reader and online iBookstore."
Also unveiled at the same press event was iAd, Apple's new mobile advertising platform. The technology will allow for full screen video and interactive ad content without the need to leave an open app and allowing the user to return at any time.
Apple will sell and serve the ads, with developers receiving an industry standard 60 per cent of iAd revenues.

Apple has sold 450,000 iPads since the US launch of the device; with the company already experiencing stock problems due to high demand.
Speaking at an Apple press event, at which the iPhone OS 4 was also previewed, CEO Steve Jobs admitted that the company was finding it difficult to keep up with demand.
The $499 device sold 300,000 units in its first day, including pre-orders, with 1 million apps downloaded in the first 24 hours and 3.5 million in total so far.
"Our [manufacturing] ramp is going well, but evidently we can't make enough of them yet," said Jobs - as quoted by website Gamasutra.
An alternative version of the iPad hardware featuring 3G compatibility is expected to be released in the U.S. later this month. The basic wi-fi enabled iPad is also due for release in Europe in April.
"It feels great to have the iPad launched into the world—it’s going to be a game changer," said Jobs following the iPad's initial release. "iPad users, on average, downloaded more than three apps and close to one book within hours of unpacking their new iPad."

So you spend hours and hours toiling away on an app that adds some much-needed Dashboard-like functionality to the iPad (sort of, more on that later) only to have it rejected by Apple -- what do you do? If you're Hongrich, developer of the slightly problematically-named "Dashboard" app, you make it open source. Of course, you'll have to be a developer yourself to actually try out the app, and it's not exactly the full-fledged Dashboard that many have been hoping for, but rather a standalone app that simply lets you run and arrange widgets however you like. Still, it's definitely a start.

We'd heard earlier this year that Aceeca would be sticking with PalmOS for at least a few more devices, and it looks like those hopes have now finally become a reality in the form of the company's PDA32 device. In addition to a leading-edge, one-inch-thick design, this one packs a 320 x 480 display, along with a 400MHz Samsung S3C2440 processor, 64MB of RAM, 128MB of flash storage, an SD card slot for expansion, and optional Bluetooth and WiFi (in case you don't need such things). Still no official word on a release date, but a preliminary spec sheet that's turned up lists April 10th, and a price of just $199 -- belt holster not included.

We can't get a straight answer on the exact jailbroken status of iPhone OS 4, but MuscleNerd of the iPhone Dev Team (and recent iPad hacking fame) is sure hinting heavily. He's got Veency (a VNC server) and Cydia running on iPhone OS 4 on video, something he claims "you'll only find on JB 4.0." Of course, he also has the dev tools at his disposal and all the bugs and loopholes of an early beta, so we can't be exactly sure what's going on. There's also not much point to releasing an OS 4 beta jailbreak to the public, and MuscleNerd himself recommends not bothering with the betas, as they're "very buggy." Still, it's fun to see these tools alive and well on the newfangled multitasking OS. Check out the video after the break.

Plenty ink has already been spilled about the new restrictions in clause 3.3.1 of the new iPhone SDK terms of use. The new wording disallows developers to use third party, cross platform development tools (like Flash CS5) to build their apps, and plenty of folks (like Adobe) are angered by it. Now it seems Steve Jobs has chimed in as well. Developer Greg Slepak reached out to Steve, citing the large outpouring of negativity on the topic, including a post by John Gruber of Daring Fireball, who Greg calls Apple's "biggest fan." Steve apparently responded, citing a newer post by Gruber that explains Apple's theoretical reasoning for locking down the platform like this. Steve called the post "very insightful." When Greg replied, raising some very legitimate defense that highly popular, important apps like Mozilla Firefox are built with cross platform frameworks, Steve Jobs had a slightly less terse response:
We've been there before, and intermediate layers between the platform and the developer ultimately produces sub-standard apps and hinders the progress of the platform.
On Greg's blog he breaks down some of Gruber's claims and makes a pretty compelling case for third party toolkits -- important examples of which can be found all over the Mac and Windows landscape. We get the feeling his impassioned pleas, and the oft-bandied threat of developer migration, will fall on deaf ears at Apple as always, but at least he helps shape this debate somewhat, which will no doubt rage on for months and years to come.

We don't really know why Apple wouldn't have mentioned iChat at its "tentpole"-filled keynote if it was all ready to go on it, but the eternal optimists within us would like to believe that the merest glimpse of the app would instantly reveal a front facing camera on whatever new iPhone hardware is in the works, therefore relegating the app to secrecy. Still, the evidence does indeed seem to be mounting for the software's inclusion in the OS. Outside of the iChatAgent process that was spotted last week, 9 to 5 Mac has pulled the covers off references within the SDK to moderators, chat rooms, encrypted video conferences, and more. They even uncovered the same notification noises that the desktop iChat application uses. Sure, this could all be one big misunderstanding, but hopefully these breadcrumbs actually do point to a long-overdue, well-integrated IM experience on the device, video or no.

Tesco has revamped its tariffs for the iPhone, reducing prices for handsets and offering shorter term contracts.
According to Pocket Lint, the retailer is offering the eight GB iPhone 3G for £100, the 3GS 16GB for £200 and the 3GS 32GB for £275, on a 12-month contract at £35 per month. The contract includes unlimited texts, data and Wi-Fi, and 750 free minutes of calls.
Those who choose a two year contract at £45 per month will receive their iPhone 3GS 16GB handset for free.
“Tesco Mobile's iPhone tariffs have been very popular,†said Tesco Mobile’s CEO, Lance Batchelor. “We've now made them even better, with a lower upfront cost for iPhone and a new 12-month contract.â€

A ‘platform evangelist’ at Adobe has lashed out at Apple over its new terms of service that make creating applications on a non-approved programming language a violation.
In his blog, Lee Brimelow states that his issue is not purely to do with Flash, but is a stand against what he calls the establishment of “tyrannical control over developers and more importantly, wanting to use developers as pawns in their crusade against Adobe.â€
“The fact that Apple would make such a hostile and despicable move like this clearly shows the difference between our two companies,†wrote Brimelow. “All we want is to provide creative professionals an avenue to deploy their work to as many devices as possible. We are not looking to kill anything or anyone.â€
Before disabling the comments for his blog entry, Brimelow added “Go screw yourself Apple.â€

As analysis of Apple's new terms of service for the forthcoming iPhone OS 4.0 continues, it's becoming apparent that the firm seems to be tightening its grip on the way games are developed for the platform.
In short, Apple are proposing that all iPhone and iPad applications must be 'originally written' in C/C++/Objective-C, which would seem to suggest Job's and his team are eager to implement an ecosystem that encourages the use of native code and the Cocoa Touch API as the sole platform for App development.
This model would of course be bad news for the high-profile 'meta-platforms' such as Adobe's Flash, and alternative App development platforms that run above Cocoa Touch such as .Net through MonoTouch.

Android fragmentation begins: EuroDroid reports that Vodafone will launch an Android app store in June, to fill in the European gaps where Google hasn't yet launched the official Android app store. Worrying quote: 'All apps will be pre-selected and tested by [Vodafone's after-sales processor] Arvato Mobile for compatibility with our devices.' Just a few days ago Slashdot covered the suggestion by Barry O'Neil, ex-president of Namco Bandai Network Europe, that it could be wise for Google to 'hand over the entire management of the Android Market to carriers, OEMs, and trusted publishers

Sports Interactive has announced tomorrow's release of Football Manager Handheld on iPhone.
The game will cost £6.99, but SEGA and SI promise that FMH will be "the biggest football management game to hit the iTunes store".
Plus, plenty of effort has been made to tailor the experience for iPhone and iPod Touch, right down to listening to your music collection while managing your team.
There are 34 football leagues to pick from spanning 11 countries, and squads of up to 36 players can be controlled. You'll need to set tactics, formations, team and individual player instructions, training and transfers.

Now that the iPad is out and iPhone OS 4 has been announced, it looks like Steve Jobs is taking a little time to catch up on his email -- in addition to taking up the new SDK rules, it appears he's very tersely confirmed what we sadly suspected all along: the first-gen iPhone won't get an upgrade to iPhone OS 4. That makes a certain amount of sense, given that Apple's subscription accounting model for the original iPhone only booked free upgrades for 24 months, but really, that's just paperwork -- we don't see why Cupertino couldn't at least allow for an iPod touch-style paid upgrade, especially since the upgradeable iPhone 3G runs essentially the same hardware. And let's not forget that first-gen iPhone owners paid more or less full price for their devices, so if this is true, Apple's summarily dead-ended a $400 phone just under three years after it launched. Of course, none of this is officially confirmed yet, so anything can change -- we've pinged Apple for comment and they haven't responded yet, but we'll let you know what we find out.

News Corporation's digital boss Jonathan Miller thinks iPad will provide stiff competition for Amazon's Kindle, and could even kill it if Amazon doesn't radically retool its e-book reader.
Miller was interviewed in a keynote session at the MIPTV conference in Cannes today, and was asked directly if he sees iPad as a Kindle-killer.
"My personal belief? Sure," he said, before suggesting that Amazon will need to revamp Kindle to catch up to iPad's colour, touchscreen and video capabilities.
Miller said that News Corp has adopted a policy of "tremendous engagement" when it comes to digital media and mobile entertainment, citing the Wall Street Journal's iPad app as a key example.
He also reaffirmed the company's commitment to paid models for its content.
"Is content expanding faster than advertising can support it? That's just true," he said, before discussing the problem in relation to online TV portal Hulu - which is rumoured to be mulling the launch of a paid app for iPad.
"It has to continue to accelerate its user base, and grapple with this question of free versus paid," he said. "We believe in paid models for highly produced forms of content in general."
Miller also talked about the new distribution environment for News Corp subsidiary Fox's TV and movie content, in relation to Apple's iTunes Store.
He referred to the way Apple's "primary job is to sell devices", which creates "a new tension that we haven't had before" if Apple decides to charge less for content than companies like Fox would like.
Asked if he sees any chance of News Corp taking a slice of iPad hardware revenues, Miller gave a one-word answer: "No."
Finally, Miller was asked about the emerging social location space - apps like Foursquare and Gowalla - and whether this is interesting for News Corp in relation to its MySpace subsidiary, or even to Fox and its newspapers.
"Do I see it as a big deal? Over time, sure. Do I think in the next 18 months it's a revenue stream? No."

Apple may have enough patents and patent applications to wallpaper its entire Cupertino campus, but we're guessing this is one it's been especially eager to get: a design patent for the original iPhone and iPod touch. That, of course, covers the "ornamental design" of the devices and not their functionality, which means that any other devices that look a little too similar are now treading on even more dangerous territory than before. As with other Apple patents, you'll find Jonathan P. Ives and Steve (no "P") Jobs listed among the fourteen inventors, and you'll also find plenty of references to earlier patents and other relevant devices -- including a pointer to none other than one of our posts on the infamous Meizu M8.

Apple dropped iPhone OS 4.0 on us last week in a big way, and we spent plenty of time breaking down and exploring the details. But, there are apparently a few gems left to be discovered, like dedicated support for in-car use -- possibly even with an Apple-branded mount of some sort. When put into this mode the iPhone generates a simple menu that's fed over video output (demonstrated after the break) while the handset becomes a remote control... which may or may not be a good idea as more and more states ban cellphone use of any kind while driving. The developer hooks for such functionality appear to be in the iPhone API and, while it's all rumorsville at this point, Apple would be blind to not try and cash in on the auto integration market -- even if it is a little late to the party.

Apple has said that it will delay the launch of the iPad due to the demand for the gadget in the US.
The company said it had taken a large number of pre-orders for the iPad 3G, due for release at the end of the month, and will delay the release outside of the US for one month in order to meet North American demand.
"Although we have delivered more than 500,000 iPads during its first week, demand is far higher than we predicted and will likely continue to exceed our supply over the next several weeks as more people see and touch an iPad," said Apple in a statement. "We have also taken a large number of pre-orders for iPad 3G models for delivery by the end of April."
"Faced with this surprisingly strong US demand, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the international launch of iPad by one month, until the end of May."
Apple CEO Steve Jobs said last week the company "can't make enough" iPads to meet demand. Today, the firm has said it will reveal international prices for the device on May 10.
"We will announce international pricing and begin taking online pre-orders on Monday, May 10. We know that many international customers waiting to buy an iPad will be disappointed by this news, but we hope they will be pleased to learn the reason—the iPad is a runaway success in the US thus far," added Apple.

There was once a time when the announcement of a fourth iteration of the iPhone this summer was an inevitable as a disappointingly rainy British summer. Then the lack of any hint of the new device at last week’s OS4 launch got people thinking – could Apple be waiting for 2011 to launch its next-gen iPhone?
Not so, according to new rumours from Gizmodo.
The site claims that Apple has booked The Yerba Buena Center for Arts in San Francisco on June 22nd – the same venue it has used to reveal all three of its existing iPhone models.
Though we know plenty about the next generation of the iPhone OS, nothing is yet known of the iPhone 4. A touch sensitive case, much like as is seen with the Magic Mouse, has been rumoured, as has a removable battery, video chat and a proper 16:9 widescreen.
The rumours come just as Apple has confirmed a one-month delay to the international launch of the iPad, meaning UK consumers won’t be able to get their hands on the device until the end of May.

Texas-based company RipCode has announced a new 'clientless Flash video codec' that will allow Flash content to be streamed on Apple's iPad. This would include sites like Hulu and YouTube, assuming the respective companies don't find a way to block it. According to RipCode's press release, the TransAct Transcoder V6 captures the iPad's request for Flash content and converts it into a special format that the device accepts and plays. This is all done without a local client or user intervention. 'RipCode's Transactional Transcoding platform enables an alternate and immediate solution to this issue, opening up video content to users without requiring the content hoster to move to HTML5 or pre-transcode entire video libraries from Flash to an iPad-accepted container format. By transcoding the content "in the cloud," it is essentially analogous to a network-based Flash to MP4 or MPEG-TS video adaption layer.'

There's no question that ABC's free iPad app was one of the highest-profile apps to launch with the device, and ABC has now finally revealed some hard numbers to give an indication of just how successful it has been. According to The Wall Street Journal, ABC says the app has been downloaded 205,000 times in the ten days following the iPad debut, and that is has been used to watch at least part of 605,000 TV shows. Perhaps the best news for ABC, however, is that the app has served up "several million" ad impressions, although the exact number is apparently still being calculated, with it only adding that it is "pleased with the results." Also, the most popular single show watched with the app? Why the episode of Modern Family where Phil Dumnphy gets an iPad, of course.

A dozen years ago, Microsoft convinced major manufacturers to put Windows CE inside devices that looked like undersized touchscreen personal computers. The platform was code-named 'Jupiter' and shipped as Handheld PC Pro, and it flopped — it turned out that people wanted full-strength notebooks. But in retrospect, it was a clear antecedent of what Apple is doing — much more successfully — with the iPad.

Apple has bought the iPad trademark from Fujitsu for an undisclosed fee following months of debate as to which company owned the name. Fujitsu previously claimed it owned the rights to the iPad name for a handheld computing device trademarked in 2003 that featured wi-fi and Bluetooth technology.
However another company has now claimed the rights to the iPad name. Transform Tecnologia de Ponta’s i-PAD is a portable defibrillator used in hospitals – and it’s likely Apple will have to buy this trademark if the company refuses to hand it over.
Director of Trade Mark Direct Mark Kingsley-Williams said: “The companies who already own the registered trademark for iPad in different territories around the world suddenly own a very valuable asset indeed.
“Had Transform Tecnologia de Ponta not registered the name in Brazil, they may well have had to cease trading very quickly under the iPad trademark and completely re-brand – a costly process.â€

Here is another troubling anecdote on the iWeb front: 'This week cartoonist Mark Fiore made Internet and journalism history as the first online-only journalist to win a Pulitzer Prize. Fiore took home the editorial cartooning prize for animations he created for SFGate, the website for the San Francisco Chronicle... But there's just one problem. In December, Apple rejected his iPhone app, NewsToons, because, as Apple put it, his satire "ridicules public figures," a violation of the iPhone Developer Program License Agreement, which bars any apps whose content in "Apple's reasonable judgement may be found objectionable, for example, materials that may be considered obscene, pornographic, or defamatory."' Whether or not you agree with Fiore's political sentiments, I believe we can all agree that the censorship of his work should be denigrated.

Apple's iPad is proving to be popular everywhere — except Israel. The country's Communication Ministry is refusing to let people bring the multimedia tablet into the country because it hasn't tested and approved the Wi-Fi technology used in the device, according to Haaretz. Ministry officials commented, 'The iPad device sold exclusively today in the United States operates at broadcast power levels [over its WiFi modem] compatible with American standards. As the Israeli regulations in the area of WiFi are similar to European standards, which are different from American standards, which permit broadcasting at lower power, therefore the broadcast levels of the device prevent approving its use in Israel.' The government seems serious about its iPad import ban. Customs officials have already confiscated ten iPads and told their owners to ship them overseas.

Apple is rumoured to be preparing to launch a new version of the iPhone on June 22nd.
According to various reports, the firm has booked the date at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, which it has used for numerous hardware launches in the past, most recently with the iPad.
Speculation towards the new hardware launched kicked up a a gear after Apple unveiled its latest mobile operating system last week.
“iPhone OS 4 is the fourth major release of the world’s most advanced mobile operating system,†said Steve Jobs at the launch. “We’re delivering over 100 new features, including multitasking, folders, a unified inbox, deeper Enterprise support, and an iPhone version of our iBooks reader and online iBookstore.â€

April 16th, 2010, 20:52 Posted By: wraggster
Crysis 2 developer Crytek has for the first time revealed an interest in the burgeoning mobile game market – but the group’s CEO fears for the future of the App Store.
Cevat Yerli told Develop that “the social and mobile spaces are certainly something we’ve been looking at for a while nowâ€, though the studio co-founder balanced his optimism with a large quantity of caution on the future of App Store games.
“I think the App Store changes the perception of game prices, which I really don’t like. It’s pushing out games at such a low price that it distorts the perception of what a game should be priced at,†he said.
“iPad and iPhone are both doing a real disservice to game prices by allowing games at such low price points – it is an issue the industry has to address at some point.â€
In an interview with Develop, CryEngine managing director Carl Jones concurred, adding that the App Store is “so saturated now, that a lot of iPhone developers won’t be making a second game. They just aren’t getting a return.â€
Yerli continued: “These games launch low as well. I mean, an iPhone game will launch at maybe $1.99 and go down from there. If the prices were higher, the store would be less crowded, have a higher competitive pressure, higher quality and better returns.â€
He also foresaw a knock-on effect that the App Store may have for handheld games, full retail titles, and perhaps, future Crytek titles.
“The App Store games are under such pressure that, to make money out of it I would find very challenging. If you look at someone who now takes a casual interest in games; they can get their iPhone and iPad games for something like $4.99, and that drives down sales on mobile platforms, and that in turn will drive down sales of handhelds, and eventually all this pressure will drive down the prices of full console retail games.
“That in turn could put all sorts of pressures on how the games are made. Perhaps in the future, the big retail games will take two hours to complete. Maybe in the future – let’s say we develop Crysis 5 – that game might be a two-hour game selling for $4.99.
Yerli wouldn’t commit explicitly to any plans to release a mobile game in the future. In the interview he said that the App Store’s pricing policy had not put the studio off mobile game development, adding that “we’ll have to see what time brings, but that’s all I can say right now.â€

Be clear on this: if you're not a jailbreak app developer then the redsn0w 0.9.5 beta release is not for you. The iPhone OS 4 jailbreak previously hinted at is for real and it's for devs only so that they can prep their wares for the summer update. Don't worry, it doesn't reveal anything new to Apple and no, it won't work on the iPad -- it's Mac OSX only, iPhone 3G only, and iPhone 4.0 beta 1 only for now. But hey, it's early days, at least you know it's out there and that people smarter than you are tending to things.

At the Linux Collaboration Summit, Google and Linux Kernel Developers are meeting to discuss the issues surrounding the Android fork and how it can be re-admitted to the mainline kernel. From the article: 'James Bottomley, Linux SCSI subsystem maintainer and Novell distinguished engineer, said during the kernel panel that forks are prevalent in embedded systems where companies use the fork once, then "throw it away. Google is not the first to have done something like this by far, just the one that's made the most publicity. Hopefully the function of this collaboration summit is that there is some collaboration over the next two days and we might actually solve it.

Yesterday, when Apple announced it was pushing back the international launch of the iPad until the end of May, high demand was cited -- over 500,000 units delivered, it said. And today, we've got a report out from NetApplications that indicates the iPad might be quickly making inroads with users. Over the first week of the device's public availability, the report says, the iPad nabbed about 0.03 percent of all web traffic. For comparison, the iPhone averages about 0.51 percent of traffic. This number nearly matches web traffic for BlackBerrys in March -- 0.04 percent (Android grabbed up 0.07 percent, as did Windows Mobile). Of course, NetApplications tracks only a sampling of website traffic to gather its data, so we'll keep our eyes peeled for longer term trends.

This week Adobe released version 5 of its Creative Suite software compilation. CEO Shantanu Narayen has naturally hit the interview trail to promote his company's wares, but the biggest news from him is actually a delay of sorts. We'd previously heard that Android, WebOS and BlackBerry versions of Flash 10.1 would be available in the first half of 2010, but Adobe's chief now places delivery to those platforms in the second half of the year. At least consolation may be found in his teasing of new Flash-enabled tablets -- most likely to be running Android or Chrome OS -- which we're told to expect to see within the same time frame. As to the question of Apple's holdout from Flash nirvana, Narayen describes it as a business rather than technology decision, which "hurts consumers" and will ultimately be judged by people voting "for the experience that they want through their wallet." Can't really argue with that. Skip past the break for the full interview.

We hope you're not sick of seeing the iPad's inner bits, what with the iFixit disassembly, gratuitous Blendtec promo, and even the FCC having some fun. Now TechRestore is getting in on it -- a bit tardily -- by giving the iPad the same stop-motion tear-down treatment that it lovingly applied for a Modbook last year. Not only does the company rip this magical tablet down to its constituent parts but it puts it all back together again and, while there is neither a kraken released nor Medusa slain, the video does feature some rather fanciful sound effects for you to enjoy, and it's all after the break.

News from Zodttd;
Hello all,
I missed you! Yes, it really has been over four months since we last spoke. But I’m back and ready to go!
So what have I been doing these past few months? Truthfully I’ve been trying to get outside more and enjoy the world. I spent nearly two years straight programming all day and night. It really ruined my social life. I took the time to find balance in my life. I didn’t post here for so long in hopes things calmed down. People were posting very nasty things, and I just couldn’t handle it at the time.
No worries though, as I have been working hard, in spurts, on many projects for not only the iPhone & iPod Touch, but the iPad as well! I made sure to fund comex with an iPad so he could work on the iPad jailbreak. I also have been keeping close tabs on geohot’s work. The good news is, we’re just in a waiting state. The jailbreaks are prepped to go. So whether it’s 3.1.3 on the iPod Touch 3rd Gen, 3.2 on the iPad, or 4.0 on the iPhone…it’s prepped.
This all has me very excited to bring my emulators on to the iPad. As you can see, I have released some videos of the iPhone versions of snes4iphone and n64iphone running on the iPad during the iPad’s release. They are available on my blip.tv video host here: http://zodttd.blip.tv. The WiiMote is already supported and tested to work on the jailbroken iPad as well! I’m working on iPad specific emulators that take advantage of the extra resolution to allow for better full screen controls that don’t get in the way of the action. I have friends such as westbaer ready to work on a general frontend/launcher for all my emulators. This can allow for easy updating of the user interface. I also want to add per game configurations.
I also am working on a few iPad specific App Store titles. I released OpenTTD for iPad which was a huge success, making the top 20 iPad games! But OpenTTD’s team sent a pull request to Apple and it was taken down nearly instantly. I will be making a post to see if I can get some support in getting it back up. Stay tuned for that.
In non-Apple related news, I have released Card Drop Deluxe on Intel’s AppUp store for netbooks. I am working on psx4pandora on the OpenPandora handheld. I might get a Nokia N900 to help support the port of my psx4all project’s port to that device. But most impressive of all is the 1300+ signatures received for me to support Android developments of VLC and some higher end emulators. It can be seen and supported here (http://www.petitiononline.com/ZodAndro) I’m working on getting a new Nexus One (as my previous one is on loan to a friend) so I can start developing on it.
As for this site, I plan to keep things very simple here. I will blog, and maintain a wiki for my projects. I really want to keep things friendly without the need to moderate much. So please be kind to others.
So I welcome you back with open arms and I’m glad to be back.
Thanks,
http://www.zodttd.com/wp/2010/04/in-the-shadows/

If you're itching to put a webOS device on your AT&T account and don't mind having half the now-standard RAM, the developers at jictechnology have released what they're claiming is an official, permanent SIM unlock for the original Palm Pre. A few bugs to get through, but it's apparently legitimate enough (we haven't tried, but the happy customers in the forums seem to suggest success) for the group to charge around £25. Great news all around, but if you're the sort whose fixation on Palm hasn't been so grand that you resisted switching to Sprint or Verizon, you can probably wait for the AT&T's Plus-sized model.

There’s no way of knowing if these snaps caught by US tech blog Engadget are the real deal, but they’re certainly a lot more plausible than some recent ‘leaked prototypes’.
The pictured device, whether it be the next iPhone or something totally unrelated, includes a front-facing camera, 80GB of storage. They also tie-in with pictures leaked in February pertaining to be of Apple’s next device.

Either Apple is trying a new guerilla marketing tactic, or it's been taking lessons from British civil servants in how to lose secret stuff in embarrassingly public places.
Tech blog Gizmodo says it has the next-gen iPhone, which isn't due to be unveiled until June. It also claims that the device was "found lost in a bar in Redwood City, camouflaged to look like an iPhone 3GS. We got it. We disassembled it. It's the real thing..."
Accompanied by plenty of photos and videos, the site says that the new model has a front-facing camera and an improved back camera with a flash, an iPad-style micro-SIM, a higher resolution display, and a squarer design with a bigger battery.
The device acts like an iPhone when connected to iTunes, although it appears to have been remotely disabled by Apple to stop it from booting up.
When Gizmodo took the device apart, they found components labeled 'Apple' that fit snugly inside: "It was evident that it was not just a 3G or a 3GS transplanted into another body".

Security researchers at the Intrepidus Group have hacked into Palm's new WebOS platform, using nothing more than text messages to exploit a slew of dangerous web app vulnerabilities. The white hat hackers found that the WebOS SMS client did not properly perform input/output validation on any SMS messages sent to the handset, leading to a rudimentary HTML injection bug. Coupled with the fact that HTML injection leads directly to injecting code into a WebOS application, the attacks made possible were quite dangerous (especially considering they could all be delivered over an SMS message).

Tim Bray tweeted, No platform has hit the big time till it's been flamed by JWZ. He was referring to this rant in which Zawinski systematically dismantles any claim the iPhone has to cross-platform compatibility.
"I finally got the iPhone/iPad port [of Dali Clock] working. It was ridiculously difficult, because I refused to fork the MacOS X code base: the desktop and the phone are both supposedly within spitting distance of being the same operating system, so it should be a small matter of ifdefs to have the same app compile as a desktop application and an iPhone application, right? Oh ho ho ho. I think it's safe to say that MacOS is more source-code-compatible with NextStep than the iPhone is with MacOS. ... they got some intern who was completely unfamiliar with the old library to just write a new one from scratch without looking at what already existed. It's 2010, and we're still innovating on how you pass color components around. Seriously?"

Users of webOS and HTC Sense can skip ahead, you're already familiar with tight social networking integration on your handsets. Now Apple appears ready to join the social, so to speak. New evidence of low-level Facebook event and contacts integration has been revealed in iPhone OS 4 hinting at the possibility of unified Calendar and Contacts apps from Apple when the OS launches this summer on, um, this device. Web site Website Gunning for Safety says that Apple appears to have created a "separate type of contact" just for Facebook. On its own, the claim is suspect if only because the site's focus is related to nail gun safety. But we've grabbed copies of the associated .plist files from a jailbroken iPhone running OS 4 that seemingly back the claim. There's even mention of a generic "SocialKitInternal.framework" opening the door for integration with services like Twitter -- though we found no evidence for that. All this aligns nicely with a "Linked Contacts" feature discovered by AppleInsider last week. According to AI, multiple Linked Contacts can be associated to a single entry in the new iPhone OS 4 Contacts app

Apple has just updated its online store with a shipping date for the 3G-equipped variants of its iPad. As you can see, all varieties of the hallowed Apple tablet should be out and about by May 7th -- meaning that some deliveries could sneak out even earlier -- and you can expect AT&T will be ready and waiting for you to activate that $30 a month unlimited data plan. Just for the European record, that means the iPad will be out in full force for American consumers three days ahead of the announcement of specific international availability. Ah well, at least that gives the UK and others hope that they might see the 3G and WiFi-only slates coming out at the same time, which should be somewhere around the end of May.

Apple has confirmed that the prototype next-generation iPhone acquired by tech blog Gizmodo is the genuine article.
In a letter sent to the blog's editorial director Brian Lam, Apple's SVP and general counsel Bruce Sewell wrote: "It has come to our attention that GIZMODO is currently in possession of a device that belongs to Apple. This letter constitutes a formal request that you return the device to Apple. Please let me know where to pick up the unit."
Gizmodo has also published more details of how it came to possess the device, claiming that Apple software engineer Gray Powell left the device behind in a German beer garden in Redwood City, California on the evening of 18 March.
The curious aspect to the story is that the person who found the handset seemingly called Apple to try to return it. "No one took him seriously and all he got for his troubles was a ticket number."

We'll be honest with you -- it literally pains us to write this. If you're the queasy type, we'd probably suggest scrolling on down and continuing about your day. For the hardcore still with us, the story goes a little something like this: a Denver-area man headed out to his local Apple store to pick up an iPad for a colleague (read: not even for himself), and in an interview, he admits to not even really understanding the fascination with Apple's new product. After doing his good deed and plopping down the plastic, he casually curled the strings atop the Apple bag around his hand as he headed for the exits. Unfortunately, a pair of thugs met him along the way, yanking the bag, the iPad and all of the flesh surrounding his pinky finger as they bolted for a getaway. Currently, police are investigating surveillance footage in hopes of tracking down the crooks who pulled off the stunt... and, uh, a bit more than they likely bargained for.

Apple might not be too happy about having a fourth-gen iPhone prototype be stolen, but there's nothing like cold, hard cash to turn a frown upside-down -- and the company certainly made plenty of it in the second quarter of 2010, posting a $3.07b profit on $13.5b in revenue. That's the Apple's best non-holiday quarter ever -- profits were up 90 percent while revenue was up 49 percent -- and yet another record quarter for Steve and the gang. Mac sales were up 33 percent from a year ago with 2.94m units sold, iPhone sales were up 131 percent with 8.75m units sold, and iPod sales were down one point with 10.89m units sold. We're just about to jump on the analyst conference call, we'll let you know if we hear anything good -- we wonder what people might be asking about?

DENVER - Bill Jordan was just doing a favor for a Canadian coworker who asked him to purchase a new Apple iPad, since the device wasn't yet available in Canada. But his goodwill gesture made him a target for thieves last Thursday afternoon at the Cherry Creek Shopping Center.
After purchasing the iPad, which can retail for $499 to $829 according to the Apple Store's website, Jordan went to the mall exit. While in between two sets of doors, a man crept up behind Jordan and started pulling the bag.
"He was pulling with all of his might, probably thinking that he could just pull it out of my hand and be gone quickly. But the chord (of the bag) was wrapped around my finger," he said.
That didn't stop the thief. Mall surveillance video shows that the man kept pulling the bag until he ripped Jordan's pinky finger.
"It was opened up to the bone all the way to the top. Like I told my wife when I saw it, I figured they wouldn't be able to save it."
Jordan's pinky finger on his left hand was amputated at the knuckle. The 59-year-old, who is left-handed, will likely need therapy to learn how to do things like type on a computer, using his injured hand.
"It just doesn't seem like, in my mind, something that is worth hurting someone over," Jordan said.
The thief, who was seen in earlier surveillance video with another man, eventually got the iPad and escaped through a south exit. Denver Police Department Spokesperson Sonny Jackson says, even though investigators don't know if the other man was waiting in a getaway car, they believe the pair had an escape plan and premeditated their crime.
"When they're walking above (on the second level of the mall) they see the (victim)," said Jackson. "They obviously targeted him and went for him and took his device."
Police are offering a reward of up to $2,000 for information leading them to one or both men, anonymous tips can be reported at 720-913-STOP (7867).
"The safety and security of our customers and the shoppers who are coming here is our first priority," said Cherry Creek Mall Marketing and Sponsorship Director Dave Dixon. He added that the mall keeps security guards constantly on staff, along with an undisclosed number of surveillance cameras.
"If there's a message here, it's that people have to be careful wherever they go," said Jordan.

iPhone sales jumped 131 per cent year-on-year to 8.75 million units in the first three months of 2010.
According to Apple's fiscal 2010 second quarter results, while iPod sales dropped 1 per cent to 10.89 million units, sales of the iPod touch - which runs the same OS as the iPhone - were up 63 per cent. The exact number of units wasn't specified.
Overall, Apple's quarterly revenues were $13.5 billion, up 49 per cent year-on-year. Profits jumped 90 per cent to $1.62 billion in the same period.
The company broke out more figures during its analyst conference call, including news that its iTunes store generated $1.1 billion of revenues from sales of music, video and apps during the quarter.
CFO Peter Oppenheimer said in a statement: "Recognized revenue from iPhone handset sales, accessory sales and carrier payments was $5.45 billion during the quarter compared to $2.43 billion in the year-ago quarter."
COO Tim Cook broke out some iPhone unit sales stats too: units grew 474% in Asia Pacific year-on-year, 183% in Japan, and 133% in Europe, as more operators signed up to sell the iPhone.
With iPad having launched after the close of the quarter, there were few new details on how it is selling, however, Oppenheimer did say that Apple is "extremely pleased" with sales so far, while Cook said they have "far exceeded our expectations". He denied that Apple is struggling to produce enough iPads for its roll-out plans though.
"We have done very well versus our planned capacity. There is not a production problem. It is sort of a good kind of issue to have that the demand in the US was much, much stronger than we predicted."
Cook was also bullish about the competition the iPad faces from netbooks. "I can’t think of a single thing the netbook does well. iPad does so many things very, very well."

The latest augmented reality (AR) app to be released for iPhone has a musical focus.
ARGirl gets users to draw or print a simple AR marker, and then look at it through their iPhone's camera. We'll let its App Store description tell the tale:
* WOW! There is a pretty girl staying on the marker!
* Select songs to play from your iPhone library
* And AR girl will dance!!
The app, which works on all models of iPhone, has been developed by Apetrus, and it costs $1.99 on the App Store.
However, it illustrates one of the big questions around augmented reality, which is this: why?
You play some music, a virtual girl jiggles, and then... Well, it does seem like it has short-lived novelty value.
Then again, they said the same about fart apps...

Adobe has finally stepped down in its tussle with Apple over the porting of Flash based games to the iPhone and iPod touch. The news could have a significant impact on the way games are created for the Apple devices, and prompt a shift in the workings of studios committed to App development
The clash between Adobe and Apple reached its climax when the latter's latest iPhone Developer Program License Agreement was announced, affectively setting the wheels in motion to eradicate the use of the Flash-to-iPhone converter.
The sidelined technology lets developers port Flash-based games to the popular portable; something Apple never seemed completely comfortable with. As a result of the updated License Agreement, the motivation for studios to create games in Flash with a view to take them to iPhone is now near non-existant.
Otherwise known as a compiler, and part of Adove's CS5 package, the Flash-to-iPhone converter will still support targeting the iPhone and related platforms, but from now on Adobe is to invest no more time in developing the platform, as revealed by the company's Mike Chambers in a substantial blog post spotted by Mashable (via Tech Radar).
"We will still be shipping the ability to target the iPhone and iPad in Flash CS5," confirmed Chambers. "However, we are not currently planning any additional investments in that feature.
“If you want to develop for the iPhone you have to be prepared for Apple to reject or restrict your development at anytime, and for seemingly any reason,†he added, in an apparent criticism of Apple's notoriously draconian submission and rejection policies.
"The primary goal of Flash has always been to enable cross browser, platform and device development. The cool web game that you build can easily be targeted and deployed to multiple platforms and devices. However, this is the exact opposite of what Apple wants," stated Chambers.
"They want to tie developers down to their platform, and restrict their options to make it difficult for developers to target other platforms."

Straight from the bullshit department: a recent survey of 1500 women has found that men who own an iPhone are more attractive than those who do not. Women were particularly repulsed by men who own a Palm Pre, the study also found.
Ok, I made that second part up, but then again the first part was completely made up, too.
According to the survey, which was held by Phones 4u, an online retailer of iPhones (and other phones) and thus utterly neutral any way you look at it, 54% of women stated that they would be more likely to date a man if he owns an iPhone.
Which model, remains unclear.

Nearly 60% of the time Americans spend using the mobile internet is social networking, according to a new report from research firm Ground Truth.
In fact, there is a huge gap between the 59.83% of time spent on social networking by US mobile subscribers and the 13.65% of time spent on portals, the next most popular category.
"While the popularity of mobile social networking is widely believed, this is the first time we have been able to truly quantify just how much the category is driving adoption of the Mobile Internet with actual usage metrics," says VP of marketing Evan Neufeld.
The company also broke out some usage stats for specific social networking services.
The average mobile user of MySpace and Facebook spends 30 and 40 minutes using them a week, respectively.
However, mobile-specific social networks have much more intensive usage. The average users of MocoSpace and AirG spend more than one and a half hours a week using them, for example.
"This data points to the fact that there is a whole universe of media properties advertisers need to consider that have to date been largely ignored," says Neufeld.
Well, up to a point. Facebook has more than 100 million mobile users globally, so while it may lack the mobile engagement of some of its rivals, its sheer size means it will prove attractive to advertisers if and when it ramps up its mobile advertising plans.

Games developer Ludia has announced that its Where's Waldo? The Fantastic Journey iPhone game has sold more than one million downloads since its release in December.
The game - based on the books that are known as Where's Wally? here in the UK - has apparently topped the App Store charts in nine countries, and has been purchased every ten seconds since its release.
For most of that time, the game has cost $2.99 on Apple's store, although it benefited from a few weeks at $0.99 in March, which is when it topped the charts.
It's another sign of a popular offline brand striking it rich on iPhone. What's more, it's renewed proof of the lucrative market that exists for iPhone apps and games targeting a younger audience.
The question now is where Waldo/Wally will be next: Ludia is presumably keen to launch further games featuring the bespectacled star, on iPhone and possibly other platforms.

An article in the London Evening Standard claims that Apple has made an $8 billion offer to acquire ARM Holdings. For those few Slashdotters who don't already know, ARM makes the processor chips that power Apple's iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch. However, ARM processors are also used by other manufacturers, including Palm and, perhaps most significantly, companies building Android phones. This explains why Apple might be willing to spend so much on the deal — almost 20% of its cash reserves. Being able to control who gets to use the processors (and, more importantly, who doesn't) would give Apple a huge advantage over its competitors

Many figures in the global stock market last night became incredibly excited after it was reported that Apple had for the first time overtaken Microsoft in a leading market ranking report.
The Guardian has reported, however, that once other variables were factored into the calculations, Apple hasn’t quite passed Microsoft’s market value – at least, not yet.
Last night’s furore was ignited when the Standard & Poor 500 Market Ranking stated that Apple’s float-adjusted market cap had reached $241.5bn, ahead of Microsoft’s $239.5. A company’s market cap is its stock price multiplied by issued stock.
However, it has since emerged that the Standard & Poor 500 Market Ranking omits shares held by government agencies and other publicly traded companies.

iPhone developer Engineous Games has announced that more than 800 UGC games have been created in two weeks using its Sketch Nation Shooter app.
The app lets people create their own shoot 'em ups by drawing enemies, backgrounds and ships on a piece of paper, then photographing them using their iPhone's camera, to import into their game.
The 99-cent app is about to get its first update, with a feature helping users to share their games on their Facebook walls.
The 800+ user-created games can be downloaded within the app, making it (sort of) iPhone's equivalent of PS3 game LittleBigPlanet. Except with more shooting, obviously.
"I've been overwhelmed by the response to Sketch Nation Shooter – it's very fulfilling to see so much unique and imaginative content being created by the community already," says Engineous CEO Nitzan Wilnai.

What are we to make of the iPhone leak this week? To reference Donald Rumsfeld "There are known unkowns. That is to say, there are things we know we don't know. But, there are also unknown unknowns. These are things we don't know we know."
And what I know is that this leak has all the makings of a massive conspiracy. Oh yes.
I'll use another quote here, this time from All The President's Men: "The list of the people involved is longer than anyone can imagine. It involves the entire U.S. Intelligence Community. FBI... CIA... Justice... it's incredible."
Just to refresh your memories, Apple engineer Gray Powell left his prototype iPhone 4 on a barstool earlier this week, and it eventually got into the hands of tech blog Gizmodo.
Reports suggest Gizmodo paid $5,000 for this 'stolen' bit of kit, which strains the ethics a bit. And it explains why the blog kept referring to Powell's innocent mistake in losing his phone 'just like Steve Jobs or Jonathan Ive".
This translates as 'please don't sack him, because that would make us feel really bad."
Sack him? I think it's more likely he'll be killed. Perhaps by stoning. Using Apple's old stash of Motorola ROKRs.
(By the way, if you find an interesting mobile prototype in a bar, send it to me and I'll make sure it's 'returned' to its owner. Don't for God's sake send it to Stuart Dredge. He's well known to the police)
Anyhow, within hours, the inevitable conspiracy theories began. There were whispers that Apple planted the device itself to start the hype for the real launch in June. That's been discussed liberally. But let's look at some of the other possibilities.
Microsoft
Could the Redmond giant be behind this? The device is exquisitely conceived and beautiful to look at - all the hallmarks of Microsoft at work.
Google
Jobs and Schmidt were recently pictured having coffee together, Maybe they were cooking this up. They are evil, after all.
Nokia
How to distract attention from poor financials? Mmm, focus it on your best competitor. OK, maybe not Nokia.
Al Qaeda
Terrorist cells? Cellphone? Eh? Eh?
JK Rowling
Could the iPhone 4 be a portkey? This is one of Rowling's creations – an object that once touched transports the owner to another destination. Is it possible that a Gizmodo hack will press a certain keypad combination and be whisked to an ancient graveyard where Jobs and other Death Eaters will be waiting to feast on his flesh? It's possible.
It's more than I can take. if someone gets hold of a next gen LG Pop I think I'll expire.

We have more details on that impending Eee Pad for y'inz. Interested? Of course you are! Speaking at a conference in Taiwan, Asustek Computer chairman Jerry Shen recently announced that the device will get its official introduction at Computex 2010, the first week of June. With any luck, the thing will hit retail channels the third quarter of this year -- possibly as early as July, a DigiTimes' source reports. Shen said that the device is meant to be all the things that the iPad is not: expect Google Android, USB, an integrated webcam, and Flash, for starters. The aforementioned source went on to state that, after wireless provider subsidies are taken into effect, the thing should cost around $15,000-16,000 TD (or about $480-510).

We still don't have a firm date for when Palm's current wunderphone will be hitting AT&T's soothingly-colored retail establishments (the site still says "coming soon"), but we do now have confirmation that at least one handset has reached its destination. A tipster was kind enough to send us these photos of an AT&T Pre Plus escaping its creamsicle confines and powering on for the first time. This doesn't look like a retail unit, likely one of AT&T's "practice" Pre Plus models that were supposed to ship earlier this month or some other promo phone, but regardless we're guessing that we're not far from yet another group of subscribers being able to massage the keys on this slider.

Another day, another Apple leak. This time it's an eBay double whammy of the camera-donning iPod touch, which appears to be of the same design from August but now with iPod branding on the back. Better yet, the two devices bear the prototype identification codes "DVT-1" and "DVT-2" ("DVT" stands for "design verification test" in Apple-speak, according to Daring Fireball), while the DVT-2 model wears an extra bar code label seemingly stamped by the "Apple Development Team." What's interesting is that the model number "A1318" at the bottom matches the current iPod touch's, which may suggest the camera feature was ditched just before the current line went into mass production, or that we may see this variant as a minor update instead of a redesigned iPod touch in the coming months. We tried to verify using the FCC ID "BCGA1318," only to be let down by a kaput FCC database -- we'll give it another spin later. Unsurprisingly, the eBay listing was quickly taken down, but it's not like any mere mortal could've gotten much use out of that Transformer-themed (and familiar-looking) "SwitchBoard" test-bed software -- maybe it was a displeased Michael Bay who killed the auction.

Palm unveiled its webOS roadmap in more detail over the weekend at a developer day in California.
According to Engadget, upcoming features include direct API access to the microphone and camera - something that has been on developer wish lists since the webOS was first unveiled.
There will also be 'media indexer', a 'Mojo Core' to allow speedier conversion of web apps into webOS apps, new security and cryptography measures and a revamped App Catalog UI.
Developers should be getting their hands on the updated features in the autumn, though the exact timeline will surely depend on Palm's future at a corporate level - the latest reports link Lenovo with a bid for the beleagured handset maker.

The self-described Most Powerful Name in News has entered the app space with an app that delivers new alerts, 'fair and balanced headline news stories', live video, radio, photo galleries, clips on demand and more. It's free, but has an exclusive sponsor in Sprint for the next month.
Top stories and videos cycle through the app every few seconds, and the actual FOX News Channel ticker scrolls across the bottom of the screen.
Fox News Channel is one the last news organisations to enter the mobile app space. However, it says it will launch more products, with paid apps due for release later this year.
The rival CNN iPhone app has held the number one slot in paid news apps since it first went on sale last September for $1.99.

Israel has lifted its ban on the Apple iPad two weeks after customs began confiscating the device due to concerns about the strength of its wi-fi signal.
Officials started allowing citizens and visitors to bring the device into the country yesterday, Reuters reports.
"Following the completion of intensive technical scrutiny, Israel Minister of Communications Moshe Kakhlon approved the import of iPad to Israel," a statement from the Communications Ministry said.

The University of Tokyo is developing a Project-Natal-style interface for mobile phones, which allows you to interact with a phone by waving your finger around. Members of the Ishikawa-Komuro Lab have used a high-frame-rate camera to track the motion of a finger and recognise input gestures. The touchless interface can be used to navigate around a phone's screen and even to type

Just what the doctor ordered! A practical cell phone that is specially designed for senior citizens! Lots of what you need, and nothing you don't!
Tired of those small phones with dial buttons so small that unless you have pencil fingers you can't make a call? Not exactly user friendly for people with arthritis, rheumatism, or poor eyesight right? In contrast, the CVLO-M61 has jumbo sized keys which make calling a breeze!
This safe phone also has text to speech time information and key confirmation for those of us who are hard of hearing. I said, "for those of us hard of hearing!" Instead of hearing tones when you press keys, a pleasant female voice reads out the numbers you're dialing. But that's not all. Old Faithful also has an easy to use flashlight you can activate and deactivate with just one button on the front of the phone!
Now for the beautiful part: The CVLO-M61 comes with an SOS button on the back of the phone that you preset with an emergency number of your choice. When you need it, a quick press, and you'll be connected with your spouse, your children, your doctor, or whatever emergency contact person you designate. What's more, if you aren't able to speak, an SMS text message is automatically sent to that same person notifying them you need help right away.
As for regular phone functions, Old Faithful delivers in style. You get an attractive unlocked mobile phone with a brightly lit screen. Icons are nice and big. It can store 500 contacts and is unlocked so you can use it with whatever cell phone provider you choose. Basically, the CVLO-M61 is great for first time cell phone users or people generally intimidated by technology thus making it the perfect gift for parents, grandparents, or yourself if you find that modern phones just don't give much consideration to an aging population that has no use for silly things like interwebs or iPhone naps!
This exclusive product is now available for single or bulk purchase, from the direct from China wholesale electronics leader - Chinavasion
At a Glance...
Extra large dial pad buttons and icons
Easy to operate flashlight
Time info (spoken aloud)

A virus that specifically targets users of the iPad is doing the rounds, TechRadar reports. Delivered in an email, the virus disguises itself as an update for iTunes. However, once the link is clicked personal data is stolen from the machine.
“Identified by BitDefender as Backdoor.Bifrose.AADY, the piece of malicious code inadvertently downloaded injects itself into the explorer.exe process and opens up a backdoor that allows unauthorised access to and control over the affected system,†a press release from anti-virus firm BitDefender reads, as spotted by TechRadar.
“Moreover, it attempts to read the keys and serial numbers of the various software installed on the affected computer, while also logging the passwords to the victim's ICQ, Messenger, POP3 mail accounts, and protected storage.â€
If clicked, the link does not appear to pose any threat to Mac or PC users.

When "Joe," our favorite bloggin' anesthesiologist, sat down for his daily Twitter session (he takes social media very seriously) he couldn't get past the fact that Apple's hardware iPad keyboard was oriented in portrait mode. Pretty weak, right? Well, fear not, iPad users! It seems that your basic dock extender cable will let you attach the keyboard and orient the screen however you desire. Now all of you proud iPad users can get back to worrying about things like protecting your phalanges and Flavor Flav wannabes.

Reports are coming in that the iPad Camera Connection Kit has finally shown up on a couple buyer doorsteps, and that the pair of white dongles may actually have been worth the wait. While one is a simple SD card adapter that adds one-touch image and video import (including RAW, complete with EXIF data) to the iPad, the second provides a USB port with some exciting new functionality. TUAW reports one reader could type on an iPad via USB keyboard, and those rumors about USB audio were true, too: TidBITS was actually able to make a Skype call after connecting a USB headset. Before you get too excited, however, please note that the USB and SD image transfers are one-way, and not all peripherals are supported -- for instance, TidBITS' iPad sneezed at an external hard drive. Also, according to the Apple Store, Camera Connection Kit shipments are still two to three weeks out, so don't be surprised if it still takes some time to get yours.

Zeemote has released an SDK that enables developers of content for the Android OS to integrate with its JS1 Bluetooth Controller.
The Zeemote Android SDK supports Android versions 1.6, 2.0 and upward and builds on SDKs the company has already released for JavaME and BlackBerry.
Existing Zeemote developers can download the Android SDK from here.
To date the JS1 Bluetooth Controller has been used primarily as a games peripheral, with support from the likes of EA, Gameloft, Glu and FishLabs.
But Zeemote is looking to push use of the device for others kinds of apps. To that end the company says it will be unveiling a global developer programme in the next few weeks that will offer technical support and routes to market.

A pair of security researchers has discovered a number of new attack vectors that give them the ability not only to locate any GSM mobile handset anywhere in the world, but also to find the name of the subscriber associated with virtually any cellular phone number, raising serious privacy and security concerns for customers of all of the major mobile providers. The research builds upon earlier work on geolocation of GSM handsets and exposes a number of fundamental weaknesses in the architecture of mobile providers' networks. However, these are not software or hardware vulnerabilities that can be patched or mitigated with workarounds. Rather, they are features and functionality built into the networks and back-end systems that Bailey and DePetrillo have found ways to abuse in order to discover information that most cell users assume is private and known only to the cell provider.

Police have raided Gizmodo editor Jason Chen's home and seized computer equipment following the gadget blog's purchase and documentation of a misplaced iPhone 4G.
"Last Friday night, California's Rapid Enforcement Allied Computer Team entered editor Jason Chen's home without him present, seizing four computers and two servers," Gizmodo reported.
"According to Gaby Darbyshire, COO of [Gizmodo publisher] Gawker Media LLC, the search warrant to remove these computers was invalid under section 1524(g) of the California Penal Code." The post also reproduced the warrant and other documentation.
According to Reuters, the San Mateo County DA's office said Apple had contacted them to report a crime and that the raid on Chen's home was connected.
"The allegation was that there was a reasonable cause that a felony theft had occurred," he said. "This is the beginning of the investigation."
Last week Apple contacted Gizmodo to ask for its phone back and the site complied, having ripped it apart, detailed and photographed it extensively online. Would you believe it's a similar size to the last one and has slightly better features?

News via http://www.summeli.fi/?p=1384
The gpsp was my first emulator port with dynamic recompilation. The problem in memory mapping and dynarec is that local data in Symbian OS is too far away from the user area, where we the new memory chunk for the dynamic area was created. My first solution was the memory trampoline pattern.
However I got an optimal solution from Olli Hinkka. The solution is called dynamic text segment relocation routine. Basically the relocator is relocating the process into the user memory are in Symbian. With this approach no memory trampoline is required, since the static side is close enough to the dynamic side.
How to use it:
You’ll need Olli Hinkka’s relocator code. You can find it at least from gpsp github. relocutils.h relocator.cpp and relocator_glue.S
First you’ll have to relocate your process on the user area in the Symbian. The user local data area is between 0×004-0×38000000, see the Symbian OS memory map. I’m using 0×10000000 in this example.

Don’t forget to check it out on the App store whilst it remains at such a low price, and also remember to purchase Super Street Fighter IV when it launches across Europe this Friday on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Apple on Monday approved Puff Puff Pass, a $2 game whose objective is to pass a cigarette or pipe around and puff it as many times as you can within a set duration. So much for taking the high road, Apple. The game allows you to choose between smoking a cigarette, a cigar and a pipe. Then, you select the number of people you'd like to light up with (up to five), the amount of time, and a place to smoke (outdoors or indoors). And you're ready to get right on puffing

Palm, Inc., which has struggled in recent months after making a splash with its Pre smartphone, will be bought by HP, the world's largest computer maker. The deal has been approved by both companies' boards, and should be wrapped up this summer. HP will get Palm for about $5.70/share (about 20% above today's closing price), or about $1.2 billion. That's a pretty good deal, considering that in the months following the launch of the Pre on Sprint's network, Palm's share price topped $16. But marketing blunders hindered the Pre's more widespread adoption on other carriers, and the company's very existence has recently seemed in doubt.

Large retail stores in Japan were ordered a week ago to stop selling Apple products online (Google translation; Japanese original). The comments in the Japanese business newspapers suggest that Apple believes online shopping confers an aura of 'cheapness' on their products; but surely killing the Apple store's competition must have entered into the calculation. As of today, most of the largest retailers have notices on their Apple catalog pages asking you kindly to visit the shop if you want to acquire a piece of magic. It seems that for the moment the campaign is aimed at the big fish, as smaller shops still seem to be selling Apple products

CNET is reporting that investigators have interviewed the person who found the unreleased Apple iPhone and began all the trouble. Wired reports that last week people "identifying themselves as representing Apple last week visited and sought permission to search the Silicon Valley address of the college-age man who came into possession of a next-generation iPhone prototype."
"'Someone came to [the finder's] house and knocked on his door,' the source told Wired.com, speaking on condition of anonymity because the case is under investigation by the police. A roommate answered, but wouldn't let them in. ... News of Apple's lost iPhone prototype hit the web like a bombshell, but it was apparently an open secret for weeks amongst the finder's roommates and neighbors, where the device was shown around mostly as a curiosity. ... 'There was no effort to keep it secret,' the source said. 'There were a bunch of people who knew.' ... Wired.com received an e-mail March 28 offering access to the device, but did not follow up on the exchange after the tipster made a thinly veiled request for money."

AT&T's own Ralph de la Vega mentioned as early as November of 2008 that you'd be able to tether your iPhone to your computer and use it as a modem "soon," but here we are some ten months after the initial announcement of official tethering support in the platform and there's no sign of it. Considering that many iPhone carriers around the world deployed it as soon as Apple had it ready -- and many more came online over the months to follow -- it seems that AT&T's silence on the issue has spoken volumes. We reached out to the company today to get a statement on the feature's status, and here's what we got back (text bolded by us, not AT&T):
"We understand that there is great interest in tethering but cannot provide any details at this time. We know that iPhone users love their devices and mobile broadband, and that they're likely to embrace tethering just as they have other features and apps – by using it a lot. iPhone tethering has the potential to exponentially increase traffic, and we need to ensure that we're able to deliver excellent performance for the feature – over and above the increases in data traffic we're already seeing – before we will offer the feature."
Coincidentally, that's almost identical to a statement the company issued last September, but regardless, AT&T can't necessarily afford to meet its network "performance objectives" before acting -- Verizon's announcement that Palm's Mobile Hotspot app would become a free add-on with the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus was a serious shot across the bow of any other American carrier trying to woo business customers and road warriors. Think it'll go live before the next iPhone does?

We just spoke with both Brian Humphries, HP's Senior VP of Strategy and Corporate Development, and Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein, and came away with a pretty positive picture for the future of Palm. The money quote is that HP plans to be "doubling down on webOS," and that was confirmed in speaking with Palm's honcho, who says that "that was the whole point." Not only that, but we've confirmed on both ends that Jon will be staying on with the company, along with much of the existing Palm hierarchy. There are plenty of transition details to work out, but Jon says there will be lots of time for all that during regulatory and shareholder approval. The word is that Palm's existing hardware roadmap is basically untouched at this point by this acquisition, but the good news on the HP end of things is that the company sees webOS as a "prized asset," and they intend to "scale it across multiple connected devices." That sounds like tablets to us, and HP didn't beat back that assumption. On the Palm hardware end, Jon is very fond of saying "scale," referring to the money and manufacturing resources at HP's disposal, but he also says that he sees Palm working hand in hand with HP on devices. One point that both companies were less clear on was the Palm branding itself -- you know, whether Palm will stay Palm. Both Brian and Jon said those kinds of details would be worked out as the acquisition went forward, but offered no concrete comment on it otherwise.
Money-wise we asked if Jon thought HP could provide the sort of "ammunition" to beat Apple, Google, and Microsoft at their own mobile game, and Jon says "I don't think HP would do this unless they were willing to make the kind of investment necessary to win." HP calls webOS a "compelling operating system," but that Palm didn't have the money to compete and "scale it across multiple form factors," and that it's exactly HP's financial wherewithal, brand, and corporate culture that it brings to the table. HP and Palm won't comment specifically on the forthcoming device roadmap, but HP did confirm that it had tested the platform "to make sure it scales." They keep saying "scale," but all we're hearing is "tablet."

Color us excited. HP's Todd Bradley just made an interesting proposition on the conference call about its Palm acquisition. Specifically, Bradley said, "Between smartphones, slates, and potentially netbooks, there are a lot of opportunities here." You read that right: slates and potentially netbooks. The tablet route is pretty obvious, but having the netbook / smartbook form factor is quite a twist. Think about it, a Foleo descendant you can be proud of -- whodathunkit? If you're worried HP has forgotten about other platforms, we need only point in the direction of the Android-fueled Airlife. Obviously nothing to announce at this point, but doesn't that just get us hopeful -- roadmap announcements are said to be forthcoming closer to the merger being finalized. The call is still ongoing, so stay tuned!

The long-running feud between Apple and Adobe took another twist today. Steve Jobs has today published a long essay explaining why Apple isn't interested in letting the multimedia platform - popular on the web - run on its handheld devices.
The Apple CEO goes so far to brand the platform as increasingly 'unnecessary'.
He said: "Flash was created during the PC era – for PCs and mice. Flash is a successful business for Adobe, and we can understand why they want to push it beyond PCs. But the mobile era is about low power devices, touch interfaces and open web standards – all areas where Flash falls short.
"The avalanche of media outlets offering their content for Apple’s mobile devices demonstrates that Flash is no longer necessary to watch video or consume any kind of web content. And the 200,000 apps on Apple’s App Store proves that Flash isn’t necessary for tens of thousands of developers to create graphically rich applications, including games.
"New open standards created in the mobile era, such as HTML5, will win on mobile devices (and PCs too). Perhaps Adobe should focus more on creating great HTML5 tools for the future, and less on criticizing Apple for leaving the past behind."
Jobs says that Adobe's push towards multiplatform doesn't vie with Apple's desire to have programmers write directly for its devices.
He said: "Flash is a cross platform development tool. It is not Adobe’s goal to help developers write the best iPhone, iPod and iPad apps. It is their goal to help developers write cross platform apps. And Adobe has been painfully slow to adopt enhancements to Apple’s platforms. For example, although Mac OS X has been shipping for almost 10 years now, Adobe just adopted it fully (Cocoa) two weeks ago when they shipped CS5. Adobe was the last major third party developer to fully adopt Mac OS X.
"Our motivation is simple – we want to provide the most advanced and innovative platform to our developers, and we want them to stand directly on the shoulders of this platform and create the best apps the world has ever seen. We want to continually enhance the platform so developers can create even more amazing, powerful, fun and useful applications. Everyone wins – we sell more devices because we have the best apps, developers reach a wider and wider audience and customer base, and users are continually delighted by the best and broadest selection of apps on any platform."

It looks like ASUS won't be the only Taiwanese manufacturer whipping out new tablets at Computex in early June, and MSI will be joining the party with its Android and Windows 7 touchscreen devices. According to the company, the tablets will come in 8.9- and 10-inch varieties, and will ship sometime in the third quarter. We can't promise you big M's Tegra 2 and Atom-powered slates will be all that different from what we've been seeing from the others out there, but we are told the pricing will be "extremely aggressive." That's intriguing, but unfortunately, that awesome dualscreen tablet we saw at CES is farther behind. According to MSI's Andy Tung, the hardware implementation is the reason for the delay as the Atom-based tablet is not providing adequate endurance. "The two screens are a major drain on the battery, and even with a higher density battery and the Menlow CPU we are only getting three hours," he said. It looks like we will be waiting until the fourth quarter to get some two screen action, though we guess we could always pick up an Android and Win 7 slate and tape 'em together.

I have the gpsp port already running on my N97, and it looks really promising. Take a look at the video
The dynarec isn’t stable yet. I can run one track with mario kart, and then it freezes. It’s same with all other games too. I hope to solve this freeze/crash issue soon, so I can make the release.

Remember that the iPhone 4G plays games. We're getting further and further away from that fact thanks to good old fashioned controversy. But just remember it.
The latest update in the long running iPhone 4G leak saga sees Gizmodo planning a counter-attack by suing the police after their computer equipment was seized by authorities.
The site's lawyer has told CNET News that the gadget blog could sue the sheriff's office of San Mateo County for raiding the editor's home last Friday.
Thomas R. Burke told CNET that this was an option because "search is not the appropriate method in this situation".
"The district attorney's office is independently looking at this," Burke continued. "We're going to be sending them a detailed letter of what we already told them Saturday and yesterday."
Gizmodo's parent company, Gawker Media, has said that the search warrant is "invalid"
The iPhone 4G was acquired by Gizmodo earlier this month before Apple had chance to announce it officially.
Since then Apple have announced that the new iPhone will be officially revealed on June 7.
It'll play games, you know.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs has explained in detail his company's reasons for not supporting Adobe's Flash technology on any of its mobile platforms.
In a long open letter published on the Apple website Jobs began by emphasising that the decision not to support Flash on iPods, iPhones or iPads was not "primarily business driven".
He rejected suggestions that Apple was simply attempting to protect its App Store from competition and said that the decision was solely based on technology issues.
Jobs argued that Adobe's claims that Flash was an open technology and that Apple operate a closed system were untrue and that the reverse was in fact truer.
Rather than using Flash, Jobs suggested that open technologies such as HTML5, CSS and JavaScript were more suitable for Apple products and that new formats such as H.264 were already available as alternatives to most Flash video content.
Jobs, who is often characterised as having little interest in the videogames industry, admitted that Apple users were being denied access to over 50,000 Flash games. However, he pointed to the success of the App Store as an offset to this loss.
Jobs went on to cite concerns over reliability, security and performance; as well as battery life and unsuitability for touchscreen control, but stated that the most important issue was developers using Flash to create apps on Apple's mobile devices.
"We know from painful experience that letting a third party layer of software come between the platform and the developer ultimately results in sub-standard apps and hinders the enhancement and progress of the platform," said Jobs.
Ultimately he dismissed it as being created "during the PC era - for PCs and mice."
"The mobile era is about low power devices, touch interfaces and open web standards", he added. "All areas where Flash falls short."

Has the Nokia N8 made a Symbian^3 believer out of you? If so, you'll be glad to know the beta tag has been peeled off the web application development tools for the platform, which -- according to Executive Director Lee Williams -- provide "an ideal entry point" for coders of all skill levels. This is because the primary languages spoken are HTML, CSS and JavaScript, familiar to almost anyone who's tried to create for the web, and with just a little extra JavaScript exercise, you're promised access to the phone's contacts, camera, accelerometer, and location. It sounds all kinds of refreshing, but the usefulness of this tool set and the entire environment will be determined by what people produce with it -- and to that end we've provided you with a link to the downloads page (Windows, Mac and Linux users are all being served) where you can get your Symbian dev career started in earnest.

Let's take a break from Apple and Adobe's back-and-forth, shall we? Instead, we'll let the latter company talk about its work with Google, specifically the Android platform. Flash-based CTO Kevin Lynch said today in a post, "We look forward to delivering Flash Player 10.1 for Android smartphones as a public preview at Google I/O in May, and then a general release in June." Good news, indeed, but with all this talk of Froyo having native Flash support, and this month's conference serving as the largest gathering of Android developers, we can't imagine a better platform (pun intended) for Andy Rubin and company to unveil its fragmentation-curbing Froyo update. Might Flash 10.1's May preview / June release schedule line up with the OS, as well? Just some fat-free food for thought.
