41MP Symbian device takes home the gold.
Nokia's plans to become supreme ruler of the smartphone world are off to a good start, even if it is down to a Symbian device and not its flagship Windows Phone OS.
The firm's new 41MP 808 Pureview device has been awarded 'Best New Mobile Handset, Device or Tablet at Mobile World Congress 2012', which was decided by a panel of industry specialists.
Speaking to Nokia Conversations, Jo Harlow, EVP smart devices, said: "It’s a fantastic award because it signifies that consumer experience counts. It’s about tech, but it’s about how tech is used to make a consumer have a fantastic experience. The imaging is fantastic; the audio is fantastic; the navigation technology is fantastic.
"These are first signals that we are executing against our strategy. That we’re back. That we’re bringing great products to our consumers – and that this is just the beginning. There’s lots more to come."
This week's MWC coverage is kindly sponsored by Neomobile, the leader in mobile commerce services. Neomobile is active in 70 geographies from 12 offices in Europe, LatAm and India. It offers a variety of mobile payment services via its Onebip mobile payment solution, featuring frictionless one-click mobile flow.

Firm unimpressed with current processor offerings on the market and decides to play the waiting game.
Sony broke up with Ericsson last year in a bid to start war in the smartphone battlefield and take on leaders Apple and Samsung.
The firm debuted its Xperia P and Xperia U phones at the start of MWC, boasting connected device functionality and dual-core processors.
However, quad-core phones are the latest flavour of the month and Stephen Sneeden, product marketing manager for Sony Mobile, opened up about the firm's strategy for joining the quad-core market in an interview with CNET Asia.
He said: "In the second-half of the year [Sony] is moving to the Cortex A15 architecture, which we feel outperforms the current quad-core architecture."
Sneeden continued by saying Sony is likely to release quad-core smartphones in early 2013, when the processing technology matches the battery efficiency.

The NSA decided it wanted to have its own go at producing a secure Android smartphone that could encrypt communications to levels necessary for national security. Project "Fishbowl" constructed 100 handsets from off-the-shelf components that were secure enough that staffers could use them without speaking in code. All conversations are conducted across an IPsec VPN with a secure, real-time transport protocol for encrypting the voice at both ends, with the VoIP server being housed inside an NSA facility. It's part of a program to get handset makers to build this kit so the Information Assurance Directorate doesn't have to navigate the interoperability hurdles between each company's tech. The agency has launched a how-to for any manufacturer looking for a large Government contract to produce Fishbowl phones on a larger scale, although they'll probably have to change the name to something more threatening like MK-Ultraphone or the Phoneadelphia Experiment.

The iOS spinoff Battlefield 3: Aftershock was abruptly removed from the App Store last month, when EA decided to "re-evaluate" the app following complaints about its quality. It has since been re-evaluated to death.
An EA spokesperson told Vox Games that the game will not be returning to the App Store. "In the interest of bringing consumers only the highest level of quality mobile entertainment," EA said, "EA Mobile has decided to suspend development and support of Battlefield 3: Aftershock and refocus its resources on other titles."
The servers will remain active through March 31, for those of you who want to enjoy the game as long as possible. Of course, the relatively small number of people enjoying Aftershock is the whole issue.

While nearly half wouldn't consider any tablet that isn't made by Apple.
The iPad 3 – if that is its real name – isn't due for unveiling untilMarch 7th, but 29 per cent of US consumers have already declared their plans to buy one of the next-generation Apple tablets, according to mobile ad firm InMobi.
Additionally, two-thirds that intend to buy an iPad 3 would also consider buying an iPad or iPad 2 at a reduced price instead.
Price isn't much of a deterrent either with 50 per cent willing to pay over $500, however 57 per cent would choose on older model if the device costs over $599.
44 per cent of users wouldn't choose any other brand tablet instead of the iPad, although 27 per cent would consider the Samsung Galaxy and 14 per cent would consider the Kindle.
Meanwhile, 51 per cent would choose iPad 3 for entertainment use instead of business of education.

Leaked part listings reveals alternative identity.
Earlier this week, Apple announced it has something to show off at a special event on March 7th and the general consensus is that it will be the iPad 3.
However, the 'iPad 3' will actually be christened the iPad HD, according to a report from gizmodo, which reveals leaked part listings from accessory manufacturer Griffin and Belkin.
The name could make sense as Apple's next-gen tablet is expected to come with a 2048 x 1536 HD display, LTE and a quad-core processor, which would offer a significant overhaul on the iPad 2.
If the document is genuine, it wouldn't be the first time the industry has been corrected, the 'iPhone 5' turned out to be the iPhone 4S.

While marketing costs fall by 59 per cent.
Mobile app marketing firm Fiksu recorded an all-time high for downloads from the Apple App Store in January, the result of selling millions of iPhones and iPads.
Meanwhile, daily downloads peaked at 6.79 million as users tested out their new devices, which was up 12 per cent from the 6.04 million reached in December.
Despite the download growth, Fiksu says there was a significant dip in mobile app marketing costs in January, falling 59 per cent to an average of $1.14 from the record high of $1.81 in December.
It's a significant development for marketers to take heed of, as they can benefit from the dip in spend post-Christmas, whilst still achieving optimum results.
Micah Adler, CEO, Fiksu, said: "We've observed many app brands invest heavily in the fourth quarter, seeking extreme growth during the holiday season, then reduce spending in January as they evaluate their marketing programs for the New Year and focus on version upgrades for their apps.

News Corp-owned Skybet last night invited punters to lay down money on what features they think will be included in the upcoming iPad 3.
But only hours after going live, the firm decided to pull the plug.
Bets on offer included whether the iPad 3 will feature a Retina display (1/8), an NFC chip (4/1) or an SD card slot (12/1).
Another more off-the-wall option asked if it would have a carbon fibre backplate (6/5 yes, 8/13 no).
“We suspended betting last night after an immediate run of money on many of the markets,†a Skybet statement given to 9to5Macread. “Within a half an hour of the markets opening we took a flood of money including a string of very chunky, three-figure bets.
“If the money is correct, then the new hardware will definitely not have a new carbon fibre casing, will not be called the iPad 2S and will have 128GB of storage!â€

If you've ever downloaded an app from iTunes then congratulations, you are a part of history. Just a few minutes ago Apple notched its 25 billionth download, thanking all involved for getting there, and of course (like it did for 10 billion, and 1 billion), gifting the lucky individual who crossed the line with another $10k gift card. Not sure what you would buy with $10,000 in App Store bucks? That's ok, since you probably don't have it, but don't forget -- our official Engadget and Distro apps are free, and will love you back all the same. Remember way back in 2008 when all this was fresh and new? Relive the iPhone SDK press conference via our liveblog right here.

For a company so focused on secrecy, Apple never really did all that good of a job keeping its connection with Corning under wraps. We've always suspected that the company enlisted the Gorilla Glass maker for the iPhone, though it didn't really go out of its way to admit it -- even going so far as omitting the New York-based company from its 2011 suppliers list. Cupertino offered it a little love today, however, giving Corning a nod in its chipper job creation report. While it didn't actually mention Gorilla Glass by name on the page, Apple was happy to talk up the "Corning employees in Kentucky and New York who create the majority of the glass for iPhone."

2012 is still young, yet it's already shaping up to be a bad year for privacy and security on the mobile front. Apple found itself embroiled in a bit of a brouhaha over the iPhone address book and an app calledPath. And, of course, Google was put under the microscope when mobile Safari was found to have asecurity flaw that its mobile ads were exploiting. Then, earlier this week, it was discovered that granting iOS apps access to your location could also expose your photos. Now it's been discovered that Android also exposes your images, though, it's doing so without asking for any permissions at all. While Apple was masking photo access with other permissions, Google is simply leaving your pics vulnerable as a part of a design quirk that came from the OS's reliance on microSD cards. Both companies have acknowledged the flaws and have said they're currently working on fixes. We're just hoping things start to quiet down soon, though -- our mobile operating systems are running out of personal data to expose. Check out the source links for more details.

Apple, which is currently waging IP war on Android vendors, is no stranger to patent trolling. Citing the Steve Jobs bio, Forbes' Eric Jackson recalls how Steve Jobs used patents to get Bill Gates to make a 1997 investment in Apple. Recalled Jobs: 'Microsoft was walking over Apple's patents. I said [to Gates], "If we kept up our lawsuits, a few years from now we could win a billion-dollar patent suit. You know it, and I know it. But Apple's not going to survive that long if we're at war. I know that. So let's figure out how to settle this right away. All I need is a commitment that Microsoft will keep developing for the Mac and an investment by Microsoft in Apple so it has a stake in our success.' Next thing you know, BillG was lording over Jobs at Macworld Boston, as the pair announced the $150 million investment that breathed new life into then-struggling Apple. So, does Gates deserve any credit for helping create theworld's most valuable company?

Got an Android tab and don't like its government manufacturer-issue UI? Then why not join the ranks of the launcher rebel alliance. GO Launcher EX for phones has been around for a while, but now it's been upscaled for Honeycomb 3.0+ slates under the GO HD moniker. It's only a beta release, and with that comes the normal caveats on functionality -- such as a lack of fancy transitions -- but you can still make other tweaks to your tab's interface, such as alter the grid size and customize your dock. Ready to cross enemy lines? Then launch your browser toward the source for the download.

VLC is the Swiss Army knife (nope, not you Perian) of media players and it has never baulked at any of the increasingly weird and wonderful formats we've thrown at it -- which is good because now it's available on Android. The unsupported, unofficial beta by user adridu59 is tailored to run on selected Gingerbread and Ice Cream Sandwich handsets. It's available to grab from the source link, with the caveat that as an unofficial build, it'll require a little bit of tinkering at your end

We know you've already added the Fisher Price DVR to the list of gadgets that may withstand the physical trauma your kid's about to put it through. But how does an ICS-equipped, 7-inch slate with parental controls sound? Dubbed Child Pad, this sticky finger-friendly tab isn't just flaunting the fact it's tasting Android's freshest treat before most of you, it's doing so with a rather modest 1GHz CPU and 1GB of RAM. In theory, that should be enough to handle your little one's multitouch doings. Speaking of, Archos is pairing up the $129 machine with access to the AppLibs Kids App Store, which offers a portfolio of over 10,000 games, books and apps. Unfortunately, there's no word on what kind of ports or internal storage the Child Pad's packing. The good news is Archos isn't saying you need to be in first grade to use it, so feel free to grab one for yourself (or your kid) when it hits shelves at the end of the month.

Minecraft: Pocket Edition has passed the one million paid downloads mimlestone on Android platforms, developer Mojang has announced.A Tweet from Mojang business developer Daniel Kaplan, as picked up by The Verge, broke the news earlier today."Minecraft - Pocket Edition has now sold more than 1 million copies. Thanks all for the support and I hope you will like the coming updates!" he wrote. There's no word on iOS sales, though it seems to be holding up well on Apple's platform too - it's currently 26th in the paid app chart. It hasn't all been plain sailing for the portable version of Notch's indie phenomenon though. Earlier this year Mojang announced a major rethink of the game's direction following negative feedback from players to a planned update.

Port of MAME 0.134u4.(It has savestates . This MAME4droid version is targeted to Dual-Core devices (1GHz and 512MB RAM minimum), because it is based on a high specs 2009 PC MAME build. Low end devices, use at your own risk. I suggest you use MAME4droid (0.37b5) instead.Remember that games that can be emulated on both MAME4droid versions will run much faster on MAME4droid (0.37b5) than on MAME4droid Reloaded (0.134), and will drain less battery.

Opera may have to rethink its tagline.
Browser firm Opera is always eager to plug its Opera Mini as 'the world’s most popular mobile browser' with every one of its press releases, however, Android's embedded browser has now taken the coveted crown from the Norwegian firm, according to StatCounter.
The research showed that Android's 'robot' browser passed use of Opera's mobile browser for the first time ever in February 2012, out of a 12-month period.
This means that Android has climbed from fourth place in February 2011 when it was behind iPhone and Nokia.
While Opera now sits at second place, iPhone and Nokia sit at third and fourth respectively, as BlackBerry rounds off the top five.
Opera has continued to push its mobile offerings over the past few months and will surely be looking to wrestle the number one spot back, though with Android the most dominant mobile OS on the market, it may have a hard task on its hands.

Creamy citrus treat expected to come after 'Jelly Bean'.
The Android OS dessert codename game continues and 'Key Lime Pie' is has been named as the firm's letter 'K' by the Verge, citing a 'reliable source'.
Key Lime Pie follows the likes of Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich and the rumoured 'Jelly Bean', which has been unofficially named as the ICS successor.
Jelly Bean is expected to receive a release before summer 2012, just nine months after ICS, which means KLP probably shouldn't be expected until sometime in 2013.

Rumours grow alongside speculation that Apple will debut a next-gen Siri alongside its new Apple TV offering.
According to TechCrunch, Google is currently ramping up the voice-recognition tech that it's had for a long time to compete with Apple's much-hyped voice feature.
It reckons Assistant will 'go beyond Siri in many ways, most importantly in that the search company will retain complete control of all the layers involved.'
That means integrating the data in the back-end to return more accurate search results and help users accomplish real-life goals. It will also be made available to developers, unlike Siri, which raises the prospect of voice recognition being rolled into third party apps.
Of course, this is precisely what Nuance is trying to do with its own developer programme Nuance DEV, which has 8,000 codeshops signed up.
And to make the story even more messy, Nuance provides the tech for Siri, while its founder Mike Cohen now works for Google.

Apple announced the 25th billion download from the iTunes App Store with a lady in China receiving $10,000 of credit on iTunes for the download of app "Where's my Water?".
Fu Chunli from Qingdao in China picked up the prize for downloading the free version of Disney's hit puzzle game featuring Swampy the alligator.
"When we launched the App Store less than four years ago, we never imagined that mobile apps would become the phenomenon they have, or that developers would create such an incredible selection of apps for iOS users," said Apple veep Eddy Cue.
Apple took the opportunity to point out that the App Store now has over 550,000 apps to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users. The company said over US$4 billion has been paid to app developers.

The BBC has called internet-connected televisions too complex, citing overly complicated apps as the main reason iPad traffic far surpasses that from televisions.
Speaking at the Digital Television Group summit, the Beeb's iPlayer chief Daniel Danker said that iPlayer traffic coming from Apple's iPad was four times that of so-called connected TVs.
"Even after connecting connected TVs, audiences are presented with a list of choices that boggles the mind," Danker told DTG Summit attendees.
Danker also took aim at 'firmware upgrades' just to get televisions working with the service, slamming the current practice as more PC-like than TV-like.
There are twice as many iPlayer enabled televisions on the market as iPads, despite the traffic figures, Danker revealed. All this is evidence that manufacturers need to get their house in order and fix up the software experience he said.

The new project, called Fibble Flick ‘n’ Roll, is a physics-based puzzle title that is due for a Spring 2012 release.
Crytek has not yet announced a smartphone edition of its CryEngine, though the company has in the past made several indications that it will eventually support mobiles with its tech.
“Going mobile is an incredibly exciting step for us as a game development company,†said Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli.
“The way that people play games on mobile devices is a real blessing. This allows us to get back to our roots, experiment and focus our energy on creating great gameplay experiences while still keeping Crytek’s high production values,†he added.
The new project breaks Crytek tradition of releasing triple-A games with high production values specifically on core consoles. The broader audience appeal of Fibble can be found on the game’s official website.

Publisher cites connection and lag time issues for game's removal
EA has pulled The Simpsons: Tapped Out from the App store after connection and lag issues blighted the game early on.
The publisher claimed that after an “overwhelmingly positive†response to the title, it had been forced to take the game down in an effort to fix the issues.
It said current customers would be able to carry on playing the game whilst changes are made.
“To make sure you current players have the best possible experience, we’ve temporarily removed The Simpsons: Tapped Out from the App Store,†read a statement on the app’s Facebook page.
“Yes, as a current player you can keep playing – and things should only get better as we make improvements to connectivity. Once we have a solution, we’ll return the game to the App Store so new players can join in the fun. Meanwhile, thank you for your patience and support.â€

China Mobile may be the world's largest telco with 655 million subscribers, but it's missing one major ingredient that any top tier carrier needs -- the iPhone. Apple's exclusivity deal with China Unicom is about to come to an end and China Telecom is going to start selling the 4S next week. Yet, China Mobile, the state owned behemoth, won't be joining the iOS fray officially until it starts shipping with an LTE radio (which we assume will happen next year). Still, according to the company, it has managed to rack up 15 million subscribers using unlocked iPhones on its 2G network. Perhaps most amazing, is that it was only in October that China Mobile announced it had 10 million subscribers using Apple's pride and joy. We can only imagine the pandemonium that will break out when the world's most popular phone comes to the planet's largest cellular carrier.

In recent years, it's become a fashion for Apple prototype parts to pop up just weeks ahead of hardware launches; and it seems like there's no exception for the upcoming next-gen iPad, which is believed to feature a 2,048 x 1,536 IPS LCD within the same 9.7-inch footprint. While we're only two days away from seeing Tim Cook and co. unveiling said tablet, we couldn't help but take a look at its bits and bobs acquired by our good friends over at M.I.C. Gadget.
What we have here is allegedly the external essentials of the "iPad 3," which include a white glass cover (sans frame) with a home button already installed, along with a 3G-ready aluminum body plus cables for the dock connector and the volume rocker. With a quick glance you may easily mistake this as just the iPad 2 -- it's even compatible with the Smart Cover! But look close enough and you'll spot the larger lens on the prototype, which may suggest that Apple's finally giving its tablet a more capable back camera. There's also a more subtle difference between the two bodies: not only is this "iPad 3" marginally thicker, but the curvature from the flat bottom to the sides is ever so slightly more emphasized, thus providing a tad more internal space for the components -- most likely the battery for the sake of feeding the rumored LTE radio. Well, until Mr. Cook gives us the answers, you can keep yourselves busy by watching M.I.C. Gadget's funkadelic hands-on video after the break.

Cave’s debut title for Windows Phone 7 will be released in just two days.
Andriasang has confirmed a March 7th release date for DoDonPachi Maximum. It will retail in the country for ¥435 (around £3.40) and be available via the handset’s Xbox Live Marketplace.
As has been the case with Cave’s releases on iOS, the game will be familiar to fans of the shmup genre but will boast simplified controls designed for touch-screen handsets.
The next Cave game to be released in the UK will be Xbox 360 port Akai Katana, which will be published by Rising Star Games this summer, although there is a new DoDonPachi iOS game in the works that could appear beforehand.

Apple destroys competition with almost three-quarters of the market.
Tomorrow Apple will hold a conference for what is expected to be theunveiling of the iPad 3, but in the meantime, research from Forrester shows the popularity of Apple's tablet, which dominates with a 73 per cent share of the tablet market.
While Android-powered tablets are the second most used after iOS, no Android tablet maker has more than a five per cent share against the iPad with Samsung on five per cent, Motorola on four per cent and Acer on three per cent.
Unless, of course, you include the now defunct HP TouchPad, which was reduced to $99 on its way out, helping it to secure six per cent of the market.
However, the data was found in September 2011, before Amazon and Barnes & Noble had released their respective Android-powered Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet (both launched in November). This is a significant point to highlight, given that the Kindle Fire currently occupies the number two tablet spot after selling a reported four million devices.
In a telephone interview, Sarah Rotman Epps, analyst, Forrester, said: "Tablets are about services. That is where Amazon has succeeded where others have failed."

Internet giant Google announced that the Android Market would be renamed as the service is brought under the umbrella of a new Google Play brand.
Google described Google Play as a "digital entertainment destination" which will incorporate the Android Market, Google eBookstore and the cloud-based Google Music service.
Despite the brand consolidation, not all of Google Play will be available in each territory - most notably Google Play Music will remain a US exclusive. Other than the rebrand under the bland generic name and a new coloured triangle logo, little will change.
We speculate that one of the reasons Google has done this is to bundle also-ran services such as Google Music with the star performers such as the Android Marketplace. By lumping it all under one banner, Google might be in a better position to convince record labels to climb on board to launch Google Play Music worldwide.
That said, right now Play to most consumers will mean music. The one thing Google Play doesn't offer to Google's worldwide audience.
Google's marketing video suggests that the rebrand also aims to compete better with Apple, focusing on cloud-based storage.
"No cables, no syncing, no storage costs. Just pure entertainment," concludes the Google Play video advert.

File limit expanded to make room for 'high-quality 3D interactive games'
Google has extended the maximum size limit for Android apps up 8,000 per cent from 50mb to 4gb.
Revealing the move on the Android developers blog, the move has been made to accommodate “high-quality 3D interactive games†that require more resources than typical apps.
APK files will still be limited to 50mb, but up to two expansion files can be attached, with a limit of 2gb each. All files would be hosted by the Android Market.
New Android devices will pick up the expansion files automatically, whilst users on older systems must start the app to download them.
“While you can use the two expansion files any way you wish, we recommend that one serve as the initial download and be rarely if ever updated; the second can be smaller and serve as a ‘patch carrier’, getting versioned with each major release,†read a statement on the blog.

The open-source X Server for Android has hit beta and is now available for download through the Android Market. On Australian networks at least, smartphones are assigned publicly-accessible IP addresses, so it should be possible to display many Linux applications on an Android smartphone simply by setting the DISPLAY environment variable to the phone's IP address followed by:0"The source is available under the MIT license (or Apache; the project page and story disagree) over at Google Code. It doesn't support all of the X protocol and there's no Xlib implementation (i.e. no X11 apps on the device yet except via the NDK if you're lucky), but it is a reimplementation of the X server in Java for Android. You can run remote applications at least.

During his GDC talk on Bejeweled Blitz, PopCap's franchise manager Giordano Bruno Contestabile hinted at the Apple news that everyone is expecting, the reveal of the iPad HD.
"I think that tomorrow every game developer will have to scramble to get a new higher res version of their Apple games on the store," he said, while discussing plans for the premium version of Bejeweled.
"It will be very important to do so, and that's something we absolutely want to address."
GDC is currently wild with rumours about the Apple event tomorrow, with the iPad HD at the centre of discussions.
The comments came as Contestabile was talking about the success of Bejeweled Blitz, and the challenges of releasing and managing a premium and a freemium product alongside each other.
He also compared the game's performance on iOS and Facebook, with surprising results.
"Every single important metric on iOS is performing 2X what it does on Facebook," he said.
This is despite the fact that the iOS version (which was launched some time after the Facebook version) has 33 users for every 100 Facebook users.
"People spend on average an hour playing Blitz on iPhone. In retention, percentage of paying users, they're all double."
He said this was partly due to the omnipresent nature of mobile, and gave out a statistic that 20 per cent of mobile gaming happens on the toilet, but also the bite size nature of the game. He also suggested that Apple's billing system was a crucial factor, every player already has a credit card attached to the game, making smaller purchases easier.
Bejeweled Blitz currently has around 10.8 million monthly active users on Facebook and is at number 13 in the chart for top grossing iPhone apps. Contestabile predicted this would rise to top five tomorrow with the release of a new promotion for the game.

We doubt you've wasted much time contemplating which iOS apps are the most popular, but Apple wants to tell you anyway. Over the past year Cupertino's been keeping its greatest hits up to date in the App Store, and it's made another adjustment to the page in celebration of reaching the 25 billion downloadmark. The best of the best shouldn't come as much of a surprise -- Angry Birds and its 12 versions are in there, as well as Fruit Ninja, Pandora and Facebook. But if you're even the slightest bit curious as to what else made it to the top of the charts, feel free to scope out the complete listing at the link below.

Face it, Google already knows you better than your friends or family, so why not cuddle up next to the giant and let it make your life a touch easier to manage? Today, the folks in Mountain View announced that recent search history is now accessible from Google's mobile homepage for Android and iOS, where users may now easily access the businesses and places they've searched for within the last day. We attempted to try the addition for ourselves, but it seems the new functionality hasn't yet hit every user. Naturally, you must opt-in to have your searches archived in the first place, and from there, you'll need to sign into your account from your mobile device to access the helpful tidbits. One thing is now certain: even if you've forgotten where you're going, Google is sure to remember.

Wednesday March 7th at 6:00pm GMT – that’s when we’ll finally find out what Apple has in store for the third generation of its iPad.
There are many sites devoted to nothing but Apple rumours, but for those without a spare two weeks to catch up with every morsel of information, here’s a run-down of what may (or may not) be on the cards for the new machine.
The only sure-fire bet is that the iPad 3 will have what Apple calls a ‘Retina Screen’. That means that, as with the iPhone 4 and 4S, pixel density will be so high that the human eye will be unable to see them individually, meaning rich and detailed visuals.
Specifically, you can be almost certain the resolution will be 2048x1536, taking it beyond 1080p territory.
It’s also a sure bet that the new A6 chip will be the brains behind the brawn. Whether or it will be a dual-core or quad-core version, however, seems more uncertain.
You can also expect the almost prerequisite camera upgrade, with the front-facing lens and sensor likely to be upgraded to HD quality. LTE network compatibility is a likelihood, too.
Beyond that we’re heading into more speculative waters.
Siri functionality is very possible, making the iPad 3 the first device aside from the iPhone 4S to feature the phone-activated assistant. But don’t expect any radical visual makeovers in terms of hardware – though speculation persists about the removal of the physical Home button.
We can also anticipate a global launch in key territories this month, perhaps as early as next week.

It's the Cost Of Meetings App, created to save businesses from unnecessary expenditure.
Marketing and tech agency LBi believes the meetings that businesses hold aren't always required, which is why it has launched the Cost Of Meetings App.
COMA has been designed to calculate the cost of running meetings, in order for firms to determine how much money they can save from cutting back on their group confabs.
Users need to enter the average hourly rate of the attendees in either sterling, dollars, or euros, the number of attendees and the app will then calculate the total the meeting has amounted to.
For example a meeting of three mid-level creative directors would cost around £600 per hour in billable hours or £10 per minute.
Chris Clarke, chief creative officer, LBi, said: “It’s frightening how much time we spend in meetings, the same is true of any business - the contention is of course that its often time wasted. Putting a value on this time is a real shocker, it will make you think twice before over-staffing a meeting or letting it drag on too far."

Social networking is the nearest competitor with under a quarter share.
iOS and Android mobile devices have caused a fall in the sale of handheld games devices, so it's probably not such a large surprise that more that gaming accounts for over half of this year's 64 billion app sessions so far, across Apple and Google platforms.
While mobile gaming dominates, app analytics firm Flurry says social networking is the second most used app form with 22 per cent, presumably largely driven by the near half billion Facebook mobile users.
Additionally, game sessions across Android and iOS are expected to rise by more than 20 times in Q1 2012, compared to Q1 2010.
In Q1 2010, independent developers that started on iOS and Android were at 60 per cent, falling to 56 per cent in Q1 2011, rising again to a predicted 68 per cent.
The dip is put down to the consolidation of developers, though the emergence of new publishers is set to boost numbers again this quarter.
Earlier today, we reported that Google has renamed its Android Market as Google Play in an attempt to make the home of its games, movies and other apps seem more appealing, while trying to further compete with Apple's iTunes.

Next generation device expected to drive total iPad shipments to 70m in 2012.
The tech world will wait with bated breath tonight as Apple holds a conference in San Francisco, which is expected to reveal the iPad 3, or alternatively, the iPad HD.
The firm held a 62 per cent share of the tablet market in 2011, which will grow to 70 per cent in 2012 when the iPad 3 is released, according to IMS Research.
The UK-based analyst says the iPad 3 will lead total iPad shipments to around 70 million, creating a 71 per cent year-on-year rise.
Apple's next-gen tablet is expected to include a quad-core processor, retina display, 8MP camera and 4G connectivity, which is what IMS says will help leave competition behind, despite an estimated price tag of $549.
Gerry Xu, PC market analyst, IMS Research, says: "There is a large customer base loyal to Apple products that have been waiting for the latest tablet. Many owners of the iPad 1 are also expected to upgrade to the latest release. In addition to this consumer demand, growth is also forecast as a result of sales into enterprise and education."

Apple has made a raft of announcements, with the new iPad 3 taking centre stage.
If you weren't watching live, along with half of the technology world, here's a round-up of what we've found out so far. - * There is a new iPad - woohoo!
- * It will be available from March 16th. Yes, including the UK.
- * It has what Apple calls a 'Breakthrough Retina display'. The device will have a hi-res secreen, with a resolution of 2048 by 1536 pixels. Four times the pixels of the iPad 2, apparently.
- * It will have a 5-megapixel iSight camera with face detection that can record 1080p video.
- * It's got a better processor under its skin - the quad-core A5X.
- * Voice dictation is a new feature.
- * There's a new iPhoto app - a picture editor.
- * There have been updates to iMovie and GarageBand too - Apple is keen for users to film, edit and publish without having to leave the iPad.
- * Can act as a wi-fi hotspot for other devices.
- * Will be able to run on 4G networks where available.
- * Same battery life as on previous model whilst using 3G (slightly less on 4G).
- * Alongside shiny new features, the iPad 3 is also thicker and heavier than its predecessor.
- * It's called... drumroll please... the 'New iPad'.
- * The new iPad will start at £399 (for the 16GB, wi-fi version), up to £649 (for the 64GB, 3G/wi-fi version).
- * iPad 2 will continue to be sold at a reduced price.
In other news:- * Apple TV is being updated so it can deal with 1080p video.
- * Films and TV on iTunes will be available in hi-def format.
Chief executive Tim Cook said the firm was "redefining the category that Apple created". Or just polishing up what was already there? Time will tell.
If you're feeling blue because you'd rather another company was in the spotlight for a change, and you work in retail, you can at least console yourself with the fact that a new iPad will no doubt mean a whole new round of iPad accessories to sell...

Consumers are clearly winning to pay in excess of £40 for a copy of Mass Effect 3, but are they willing to do the same for its companion iOS title?
EA certainly hopes so. Mass Effect: Infiltrator was released on iPhone and iPad yesterday. It costs £4.99 to download.
However, as spotted by Eurogamer, the title also offers an array of in-app purchase options. And the most expensive one weighs in at an eye-watering £34.99.
For the money players will receive 200,000 in-game credits that can be spent on an assortment of digital goodies such as weapons and armour.
Credits can be earned in-game, of course, though at a far slower rate.
Other options for those who’d prefer to buy their success range from 75,000 credits for £17.49 all the way down to 2,500 credits for £1.49.
Mass Effect 3, which offers a certain amount of interactivity with ME: Infiltrator, will be released in the UK this Friday.

When the iPhone 4S was announced last year, the fine folks over in Cupertino outed an extended, premium protection plan, dubbed AppleCare+. That service, which boosts the standard 90 days of coverage to two years, in addition to ensuring "up to two incidents of accidental damage coverage," will now also be available to prospective new iPad owners for an additional fee. The company's set to charge $99 for the package -- though you'll have to fork over an extra $49 apiece for hardware service -- but as for a release, there's still no word on a firm date; simply a promise that the plan's "coming soon." Until then, prepare to handle that A5X beast with kid's gloves.

Apple has also now made iTunes 10.6 available for download, which includes support for 1080p movies and TV shows to match those available on the new Apple TV. The update also brings with it a number of improvements to iTunes Match, including better song matching, and improvements to the way album artwork is downloaded and displayed. See that? That's the first shot we've been able to secure using the new iPad and its "iPhone 4S-esque" sensor. For those unaware, it's rocking a five megapixel sensor and plenty of niceties grabbed from the 4S, and the shot here is entirely unedited in any way. To be honest, it's pretty impressive given the exceptionally challenging lighting situation that we were facing in this here room, with a well-lit backdrop and a poorly lit foreground. Looking for the full resolution version to pore over? Hit up the source link, and forgive us if it loads upside-down.

Well, it looks like we didn't have to wait long for that iOS 5.1 update promised for today. The update is already rolling out to iPhones, iPads and compatible iPod touches. That brings with it a number of improvements and bug fixes, including the previously-announced Japanese language support for Siri, a redesigned camera app for iPad, the ability to delete individual photos from Photo Stream and, somewhat curiously, an "updated AT&T network indicator." What's more, as previously rumored, the camera shortcut is now also always visible on the lock screen for iPhone and iPod touch users.
Update: As a number of commenters have pointed out, it turns out that update to the AT&T network indicator is a change to display "4G" in the status bar, even though the device's connectivity of course remains the same speed as ever.

Here she is -- the iPad HD! Er, new iPad. Breaking away from the numerical tracking system used before (and still used in the iPhone range), Apple has decided to highlight the most major change in its newest slate by simply dubbing it "new." By and large, the new guy is the same as the old guy (Home button included), but with a few nice amenities that could very well convince OG iPad owners to upgrade. Upon touching the HD variant, it's not the overall form factor that grabs us -- it's the screen. Given that we're unashamed Pixel Density Enthusiasts 'round these parts, seeing a 2,048 x 1,536 resolution display in the same area as the prior 'Pads is stunning. Nearly two months ago to the day, ASUS wowed our entire CES trailer with a reported 1,920 x 1,200 display on the TF700T; this, however, is something that really needs to be ogled to truly appreciate. In fact, the first viewing conjured up familiar feelings -- ones that came to light when placing the iPhone 4 beside the iPhone 3G for the first time.
Unsurprisingly, Apple has managed to produce something that's truly beautiful to look at, and while we've yet to see the full potential of having this many pixels on a 9.7-inch slate, we're guessing a cadre of game developers are already hard at work in order to remedy that. Beyond being dazzling from a density standpoint, colors are sharp and accurate, and viewing angles are predictably ridiculous; even taking a peek from an extreme side angle gives way to a fairly solid image with next to no washout.

Facing soaring demand for budget tablets (and one in particular), Apple has announced it will sell theiPad 2 alongside the new iPad, with last year's model tumbling to a more palatable price of $399 for the WiFi-only model, or $529 for the 3G version. That entry-level price in particular puts it in more direct competition with a slew of mid-range tabs that previously undercut the iPad, including the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus and others. Specifically, though, Tim Cook & Co. hope that lower price will attract not just thrifty consumers, but schools looking to issue iPads in large numbers -- a move that dovetails with the release of iBooks textbooks and the iBooks Author OS X app earlier this year.
Though this is the first time the company's offering two iPads at once, this strategy is old hat for Apple, which has long been taking that tack to sell more iPhones. What's notable is that usually the trade-off (aside from year-old specs) has been that users have had to settle for devices with minimal built-in storage, which you naturally can't expand with a memory card, this being an iDevice and all. In this case, though, the iPad 2 will still be offered with 16GB of built-in storage, as opposed to, say, eight gigs. Still, depending on the size of your library, this might be a good time to get acquainted with iCloud, if you haven't already.

Apple's busy introducing a whole bunch of new apps to go along with its shiny new iPad, and iPhoto is near the top of the list. The "reinvention" of the iconic photo software will be available today for $4.99, and offers a plethora of features, such as bezel gestures, effects, multi-touch editing and direct beaming. You can also easily tweak white balance, exposure and saturation, and you can add geotags, notes and captions. Another highlight of the new iPhoto is the Journal, which allows you to pick and choose certain images to push to iCloud for web viewing. Interestingly, the announcement comes right on the heels of Adobe's competitive offering.
To complete the circle of iLife at today's event, Apple announced significant updates to iWork, iMovie and Garage Band. iWork's refresh utilizes the new iPad's Retina display and offers 3D charts, and each individual app -- Keynote 1.6, Numbers 1.6 and Pages 1.6 -- will be ready for purchase today for $9.99 (or free, if you already have the apps). Next up is iMovie, available for $4.99, which now offers the ability to turn your HD movies into trailers and adds a few more advanced editing tools. Finally, Garage Band introduces a new feature called Jam Session, which lets you and three of your friends connect iOS devices together wirelessly and play together in real-time. Just as before, newbies can get the updated app for $4.99.

Ever since Siri showed up on the iPhone 4S, she's been put to work in a variety of non-Apple approved ways and unofficially ported to other iDevices, including the iPad. Now Apple's next-gen iPad has made its auspicious debut in San Francisco with a splash of Siri on board. It's not the full voice assistant, but the new tablet does have voice dictation software that supports US English, British, Australian, French, German and Japanese. Not only that, but the dictation feature is available in third-party apps as well, so you'll be able to speak your tweets and status updates on Apple's new slate.

March 7th, 2012, 23:38 Posted By: wraggster

So, what'd you have in the office pool? iPad 3, iPad 2S, iPad HD? Doesn't matter, really. All that matters is that it's here! This is the next generation of Apple's iOS slate and, as usual, she's a beaut -- and yes, she's still rockin' a physical button. As was rumored this thing is packing a Retina display, potentially making this the most pixel-packed slate on the market. The 9.7-inch screen plays host to 3.1 million pixels in a 2048 x 1536 arrangement -- that's 264ppi. It's not just a higher resolution though, the screen also boasts improved color saturation. Of course, what would a new iPad be without some updated guts. The new model has an A5X processor and quad-core graphics chip. Apple even claims its newest sliver of silicon can deliver four times the performance of a Tegra 3 -- we'd say dems fightin' words.
There's also a new iSight camera on board that's quite similar to the version inside the iPhone 4S. It's only five-megapixels, but it does have a backside illuminated sensor with a five element lens. It's also capable of capturing 1080p video, which should come as no surprise. We're also excited to see the keyboard sporting a brand new dictation key that lets you speak instead of type -- yes, just like on Android. The new software inside will also let you use the slate as a portable WiFi hotspot... so long as the carriers are game. It even has the ability to recognize at least some bezel gestures, as revealed during its iPhoto demo.
Perhaps most exciting though, is the new connectivity options -- you guessed, LTE! The new iPad is sporting 21Mbps HSPA+, but it's also rocking an LTE radio capable of pulling down 73Mbps on both Verizon and AT&T here in the US. Outside of the states Rogers, Bell and Telus will also be scoring 4G flavors of the iOS tablet. Amazingly enough, even with an LTE antenna on board, Apple is still claiming to get 10 hours of battery life. That's probably partially do to the slightly increased weight of 1.4lbs, though the 9.4mm thickness is nothing to sniff at.
The new iPad will be available March 16th, starting at $499 for the 16GB WiFi model and scaling up to $829 for the 64GB version with 4G. So, on the price front, nothing has changed. Pre-orders start today in the US, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia, with much of the rest of the globe to follow on March 23rd. For more details hit up the PR after the break.

The Xbox Live Indie Games Companion app we first reported earlier this month is now available on Windows Phone. The app allows for easy browsing of Xbox Live Indie Games, including information, screens and links for each game. The app will even point users to Xbox Live Marketplace, where XBLIG demos or even full games can be purchased directly from their phone. Honestly, the XBLIG Companion looks like a much easier way of finding indie games than on Xbox Live Marketplace itself.
Windows Phone users can nab the app now for the reasonable price of no dollars. Developer Eat Studios notes that iOS and Android versions of the app "should be available in the near future."

Part of the firm's strategy to grant more mobile devices with PlayStation certification.
Sony's PlayStation Suite SDK will be available in open beta form for small and large content developers alike in April, enabling them to create content for open OSs on PlayStation certified devices.
The open beta version has been improved based on requests from original closed tests and will rollout beyond Japan, the US and the UK this time.
Sony plans to accelerate the expansion of PlayStation certified devices, which supports our report that the firm may grant HTC approval to make PlayStation smartphones and tablets.
The full version of the SDK will be available by the end of the year, allowing developers to make sales in the PlayStation Store on a commercial basis, while the annual subscription will cost $99.
Additionally, speculation has circulated about PlayStation Vita becoming an open platform for mobile devices and this could be the start of the transition.

Throwing it against a wall, dropping it down the loo and driving over it are prime methods.
New research from comparison site GoodMobilePhones shows over a third of the UK has purposely damaged their phone in order to upgrade early.
It's probably not so surprising, given that most UK operators tie subscribers into a two-year contract, by which time the user may well have had enough of their device.
However, just 12 per cent of those that had damaged their phone intentionally successfully received an early upgrade, demonstrating a solid reluctance of networks willingly parting with devices ahead of schedule. That, of course, means 88 per cent are left with a broken handset, unless they buy their own upgrade.
43 per cent chose to through their phone against a wall to achieve destruction, while 28 per cent elected to dropping it in the toilet.
Additionally, 18 per cent went to the extreme of driving over their phone, as other answers including jumping on it and putting it for a spin in the washing machine.

200,000 of them optimised for iPad.
The figures were divulged at another triumphant product update from the Cupertino firm last night.
Apple CEO Tim Cook proclaimed that his firm has both feet planted in the post-PC future, and the wild success of its less-than-four-year-old app store is evidence that Apple is leading the charge.
Apps offer a new form of software distribution and are designed to work on phones and tablets. As such they have eclipsed the old-school CD-ROM model for shipping software to PCs.
The Apple App Store now comprises 200,000 apps for the iPad, which has only been around for two years. At the weekend, Apple confirmed lifetime downloads for the store had passed the 25 billion mark.
In all, Apple has sold 315 million iPads, iPhones, and iPod Touches, with 62 million of these iOS-powered devices being sold in Q4 2011 alone and 172 million in 2011.
Tim Cook said the 15.4 million iPads sold during the quarter beat the sales performance of nearly every other major PC manufacturer during that same time period.

Google's rebranding of the Android Marketplace has resulted in widespread confusion as millions of smartphones around the world replace the usual icon with far less descriptive Google Play.
Androidcommunity.com reported that the site had received "tons of comments, tips and emails" to the effect that the Android Market had "gone missing" with the belief that their phone no longer had the ability to download applications.
Punters could be forgiven for missing Google's announcement of the corporate rebranding exercise that will see the Marketplace and various US-only content shops appear under the Google Play banner. Even more so an indistinct set of icons have shown up, one called 'Play Store'.
In this day and age, many users probably mistook it for the usual sort of random bloatware shovelled on by mobile operators.
The fact that productivity apps can now be found under the 'Play Store', with a suitably music/video play-like icon, would certainly seem to be a significant shift in semantic obviousness towards the 'wtf' end of the scale.
It's curious that the same company has been bombarding millions of people worldwide about the now-in-effect consolidated privacy agreement across dozens of Google web services, yet it couldn't manage an explanatory pop-up on Android handsets.

Unreal Engine programmer says customers should be given performance options on smartphones
The increasingly disparate range of smartphone hardware means that PC-like settings would be an elegant solution to performance scaling, a developer at Epic Games has said.
Niklas Smedberg (pictured), a senior engine programmer at the Infinity Blade company, told attendees at GDC that mobile “is the new PC†in terms of diversity of GPU, CPU and memory specs.
“On just iOS alone you still have a wide range of different devices and different performances to cover,†he said.
Because of the disparity in hardware, everything on iOS has to be built with the lowest settings in mind, Smedberg added.
“On Xbox 360 you can try and get everything out of the console, but on mobile you have to scale performance for a wide range of device. So, to be future proof, it would be nice to have PC-style settings.â€

Apple won a major patent for its 'iWallet' technology, which is a digital system that uses near-field communication (NFC) technology to complete credit card transactions and manage subsidiary financial accounts directly on your iPhone. On the home screen for iWallet, users can see their entire credit card profiles, statements, messages from their banks, and even adjust preferences or add additional cards. Within preferences, users can schedule credit card payments and set parental controls on their children, which allows kids to use their iPhones as wallets but limits the extent to which they can use it. Users can track their payments and statements within the iTunes billing system, which keeps the credit card information safe and secure."

[Bjørn] combined some aging electronics he had around the house to create this Android media center. The enclosure is an FM-radio, but since he only listens to online media it wasn’t of much use to him. After sizing it up he realized it was a perfect candidate to receive his old HTC Hero Android phone.
The upper portion of the stock radio used to host controls for tuning the FM dial, adjusting volume, and switching the unit on and off. He cracked open the case, ditching the radio receiver and patching in to the amplifier. The volume knob was moved to the right side of the case, and a hole cut to receive the phone. Audio is pulled from the phone with the jack sticking out the left side. We’d love to see a future improvement using a right-angle jack (kind of like this charging hack) or patched directly into the phone’s circuit board. This way everything would fit inside the box.
Now he can listen to Internet radio, or stream some video like in the clip after the break.

We've got good news for anyone intrigued by the new (largely incremental) features of Apple's latest mobile OS update. MuscleNerd, famed iOS meddler, has confirmed that iOS 5.1 can be jailbroken to the original iPad, iPhone 4 and 3rd and 4th generation iPod Touch devices. Unfortunately, it's still a tethered jailbreak which means you'll need to "just boot" the device using redsn0w whenever it powers down. However, we're sure those iOS hackers are already working on that minor niggle. Get the full instructions and those ever-important warnings over at Think iOS, which also links to the required iOS 5.1 files.

Amazon's Kindle Fire shipped 4m devices in Q4 to become the world's number two tablet, trailing behind the iPad.However, it isn't just the tablet PC market the Fire has had an impact on, according to Digitimes.
e-book shipments reached nine million in Q4 and although a dip is usually expected after Christmas, the devices are thought to reach shipments of just two million in Q1.
Digitimes puts this down to the successful sales of the Amazon tablet, which has been its bestseller for 16 weeks, in turn affecting the sale of its Kindle e-readers.
Additionally Digitimes says annual shipments of e-readers will top 60 million by 2015, compared to the 22.8 million shipped in 2011.

BSkyB continues to push its mobile streaming platform with the new addition.
The UK mobile streaming market has becoming considerably crowded with platforms such as LoveFilm, Netflix, BBC iPlayer, ITV Player and of course, Sky Go, available for consumers to choose from.
Now, BSkyB has added Sky Sports F1 to Sky Go, which is in line with its recent expansion that made the platform available to Android users.
The channel is dedicated solely to Formula 1 and is available to Sky customers whose package includes Sky Sports or HD.
The first show will air tonight at 8pm.

No more downloads for owners of Windows Mobile 6.x devices.
Microsoft announced the closedown of its app store in a series of emails that are being sent to customers of its Windows Mobile 6.x smartphones.
The closedown will take place on May 9th, at which time users will be unable to download anymore apps or games from the Marketplace.
However, existing apps and services that are already installed will continue to work, unless the device is wiped.
It's fair to say that Microsoft has neglected its 6.x OS, what with the last update being rolled out over two years ago in January 2010.
Since that time, the firm has concentrated on pushing its Windows Phone OS, which is currently on version 7.5 (Mango).

Last year, Nokia left its Symbian OS behind and moved to Windows to power its future devices in order to fight its way back into the smartphone market and capture high end users.
However, while Nokia has decided to go premium, there are a rising number of Android devices on the market at affordable prices, which are becoming adopted by the low end users that Nokia regards as its bread and butter.
Speaking of the new threat in its annual report, Nokia, says: "We are addressing this with our planned introductions in 2012 of smarter, competitively priced feature phones with more modern user experiences."
Reuters cites sources that say Nokia is enhancing its Linux-based software with a new version codenamed Meltemi, replacing its Series 40 tech in advanced feature phones to enable them with smartphone-like functions.
WIth regard to its Windows strategy, Nokia, said: "We plan to introduce and bring to markets new and more affordable Nokia products with Windows Phone in 2012, such as the Nokia Lumia 610."

March 9th, 2012, 23:38 Posted By: wraggster
The US Justice Department has plans to bring legal action against Apple and the major book publishers, alleging that the companies colluded to raise prices of electronic books.
Simon & Schuster, Hatchette Book Group, Penguin, Macmillan, HarperCollins are apparently in the firing line for the antitrust action according to sources first quoted by the Wall Street Journal. At least some of the publishers have been in negotiations to settle before the DoJ gets heavy.
The core of the dispute is the introduction of the so-called "agency" model which shifted the setting of prices to publishers rather than retailers. The move coincided with the launch of the Apple iPad and continues to result in eBooks often costing more than their dead-tree equivalents.
Late last year European antitrust authorities also announced an investigation into the same companies for exactly the same reason.
The late Steve Jobs own biography appears to represent something of a smoking gun as far as price fixing collusion. In Walter Isaacson's biography, Jobs said that Apple was aware of publishers concern regarding the dominating influence of Amazon and their deep discounting.
Jobs said that the firm told book publishers: "We'll go to the agency model, where you set the price, and we get our 30 percent and yes, the customer pays a little more," either unaware or uncaring that such a price-raising strategy would be illegal under many antitrust laws worldwide.
He went on to acknowledge that the publishers then approached Amazon with the demand that the etail giant sign up to an agency contract or they would be unable to sell any electronic books.

Battleheart's creator Mika Mobile in an update explained that it was dropping Android support. Google's platform was losing money for the company, since it spent about 20 percent of its time supporting the platform but only ever made five percent or less of the company's revenue. Much of the effort was spent on issues specific to Android, where the diversity was only creating problems rather than helping. 'I would have preferred spending that time on more content for you, but instead I was thanklessly modifying shaders and texture formats to work on different GPUs, or pushing out patches to support new devices without crashing, or walking someone through how to fix an installation that wouldn't go through,' one half of the husband and wife duo said. 'We spent thousands on various test hardware. These are the unsung necessities of offering our apps on Android.'"

Did you wait too long to pull the trigger on a pre-order for Apple's newest iPad? Well, it looks like you'll have to join the rest of the US-based iStragglers and settle for a later ship date. The Cupertino-born slate, initially set for a March 16th release, now appears to have been pushed back to the 19th, forcing prospective online buyers to seek out any remaining stock at brick and mortar outlets on launch day. While this is by no means an indication that the company's sold out of its third-generation tablet wares, consider it a last call for the early adopter train.

[skullkey] over at the House4Hack hackerspace in Pretoria, South Africa wanted a way to get kids excited about technology and desktop fabrication labs. Wanting to give kids a visceral feel for the march of technology, he created Makerdroid, an android app that allows for the creation 3D objects on an Android tablet and preparing them to be printed on a Reprap or Makerbot.
What’s really interesting about this build is not only the fact that [skullkey] and his lovely beta testers are generating .STL files on an Android device, the object files are also being converted to GCode on the Android, without the need for a conventional computer. Makerdroid uses the very popular Skeinforge to generate the instructions for the printer (although a lot of people are switching over to Slic3r).
Makerdroid doesn’t need a PC to print objects out on a 3D printer, but we think the process of shuffling GCode files from a tablet to the printer with an SD card is a little archaic. It might be possible to print directly from an Android tablet over Bluetooth with the Android Bluetooth Reprap app that is currently in development. Still, we love the idea of printing objects we just created on a touch screen, as shown in the Makerdroid demo video after the break.

MAME4iOS Reloaded 1.0 WIP. Port of MAME 0.134u4 for iOS devices
iMAME4all is a iOS universal app done by David Valdeita (Seleuco), port of MAME 0.37b5 emulator by Nicola Salmoria & TEAM for all jailbroken iOS devices (iPad HD, iPhone 4G , iPod touch and older) and it is based on GP2X, WIZ MAME4ALL 2.5 by Franxis.
MAME4droid is a version of iMAME4all (iPhone, iPad) for Android, developed also by David Valdeita (Seleuco).
They emulates arcade games supported by original MAME 0.37b5 plus some additional games from newer MAME versions.
This version emulates over 2000 different romsets.
Please, try to understand that that with that amount of games, some will run better than others and some might not even run with iMAME4all. Please, don´t email me asking for a specific game to run.
Although the performance is very good with modern devices (all games I tested on iPad run practically perfect), owners of older devices should not expect a good performance; please turn off sound because that's very helpful.
After installing, place your MAME-titled zipped roms in /var/mobile/Media/ROMs/iMAME4all/roms (iMAME4all) or /sdcard/ROMs/MAME4all/roms (MAME4droid) folder.
MAME4droid & iMAME4all uses only '0.37b5', 'GP2X, WIZ 0.37b11 mame romset'. Use "clrmame.dat" file included in '/var/mobile/Media/ROMs/iMAME4all' or /sdcard '/ROMs/MAME4all/' to convert romsets from other MAME versions to the ones used by this version, using ClrMAME Pro utility, available in next webpage:

Firm will bide its time to see if demand for the OS develops.
Sony is looking to bounce back from severing ties with Ericsson, with hope that its new Xperia range of Android devices will set the smartphone world alight.
However, the firm isn't putting all of its eggs in the Android basket, as Sony would consider adopting the Windows Phone OS, according to PhoneArena.
During a meeting with Sony's product marketing manager Stephen Sneeden at MWC, the exec revealed that the firm is open to moving to WinPho, though it will monitor the progress of the OS before converting.
That, of course, means monitoring Nokia's sales, as the firm is using WinPho on its premium Lumia devices and future low-end models.
Aside from Windows and Android, Sony may also be looking to design a PlayStation Vita OS for its mobiles too.

Demand for next-gen tablet has been "off the charts."
Apple revealed its new iPad on March 7th, demonstrating its new features, which include: quad-core processors, LTE connectivity, retina display and native apps.
It seems the new tech has appealed to the masses of loyal fans, as the firm claims it is already struggling to keep up with demand ahead of the March 16th release date, according to USA Today.
The Apple statement, says: "Customer response to the new iPad has been off the charts and the quantity available for pre-order has been purchased. Customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date."
There are six different models available, but anyone hoping to purchase one online will be looking at a dispatch time of two-three weeks, meaning it will probably be April by the time the tablet arrives.
Additionally, there is a limit of two orders per customer, most likely to prevent people from bulk buying and reselling the devices for over the top prices on eBay and Amazon.

Apple's newly released iPad 3 is available with a LTE 4G option but the radio frequencies supported are incompatible with those expected to be offered in the European market.
The European WiFi/4G iPad 3 is essentially the same as the US AT&T version which means that it supports 4G LTE on the 700MHz and 2100MHz bands versus the 800, 1800 and 2600MHz bands planned in European territories.
That said, given that LTE hasn't yet launched in several countries including the UK, the 4G iPad 3 still supports the older 3G standards including the nippy HSPA+ standard on virtually every band where those technologies are used 850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz.
Meanwhile in the US, Apple's iOS 5.1 update has apparently fallen into line with the marketing departments of the local mobile carriers and has switched out the 3G icon for a 4G icon when connected to AT&T's HSPA+ network.
In fact LTE being called 4G itself is already a corruption of the original ITU standards body's definition of 4G but now it seems changing a digit is easier than rolling out a new fancy network so they've taken to calling HSPA+ 4G in the US as well. Those crazy Americans.
So far that hasn't quite caught on in the UK, most likely because European press traditionally has somewhat sharper teeth and wouldn't let operators get away with it.
British operator Three already moved to clarify some misleading reports about a 4G network arriving this year, pointing out it was '3.5G' HSPA+.
The bottom line is that if you want mobile connectivity on your 'new iPad' then the 4G version will go as fast as any British mobile network (42Mbps) until the arrival of actual 4G LTE - and it'll nicely show you a 4G icon anyway, and that's all that matters right?

Traditional publishers have entered the mobile market, but can't beat the new wave
The early days of smartphone gaming were dominated by the many new developers that sprang up to take advantage of the wide open markets. Once the markets began to mature, publishers of traditional console and PC games began to put games on smartphones. Some predicted that established publishers with big budgets, experienced developers, and huge brand names would quickly dominate the mobile markets.
But a new analysis by mobile analytics firm Flurry completely demolishes that prediction, showing that established publishers only control about one third of the games being played on mobile platforms.
Flurry examined user sessions in January and February of 2012 to give the most current picture of game usage in the combined Android and iOS markets. It tracked more than 64 billion application sessions over more than 500 million active Android and iOS devices (note that while Android recently claimed more than 300 million devices activated, and last week Apple said that 315 million iOS devices have been sold, not all of those devices are still active.).
Games accounted for more than half of all the sessions tracked, as can be seen on the chart. Flurry also noted that the number of game sessions has been expanding rapidly over the last three years, with over 20 times the number of sessions in Q1 2012 as were played in Q1 2010.

Super High Aperture. Heard of it? Probably not, but thanks to Apple, you'll probably long for days when you didn't in just a few months. According to an in-depth look from the folks at DisplaySearch, the aforesaid technique is the primary reason that Apple was able to shove 2,048 x 1,536 pixels into the 9.7-inch panel on the new iPad. Not surprisingly, it wasn't Apple that conjured up the magic; instead, it was crafted by engineers at Sharp and JSR (a display materials maker from Japan), but it'll be the iPad that makes an otherwise geeky achievement something that the mainstream covets. According to the science behind it, SHA is "a method of increasing aperture ratio by applying approximately a 3 [micrometer] thick photo-definable acrylic resin layer to planarize the device and increase the vertical gap between the [indium tin oxide] pixel electrodes and signal lines." Reportedly, there are also "at least twice as many" LEDs in the panel compared to that on the iPad 2, further suggesting that there's way more battery within the new guy than the last. Technophiles need only dig into the links below to find plenty more where this came from.

Samsung is a distant second choice with just eight per cent.
An increasing number of employees within the corporate sector are being plied with tablets to complete their work on, adding to the daily use of smartphones, laptops and desktops.
This is supported by a new ChangeWave Research survey, which says more than one-fifth of firms will buy tablets for their staff members.
Results show 84 per cent of businesses now plan on buying iPads in Q2, following the release of the new iPad, which is a seven per cent rise on the November 2011 survey.
Additionally, Samsung was a distant second choice with eight per cent, falling by two per cent, in fact, all rival tablets suffered a decline in interest as a result of the iPad's introduction.
Yesterday, we reported that Nokia may reveal a new Windows 8 tablet at the end of 2012, and while it will join a crowded market, its office functions may prove to be a high commodity with the enterprise crowd.

The smartphone space is growing at phenomenal speeds, with all manufacturers rivalling in the hope of becoming one of the big three market vendors.
Now, new research from analyst iGR expects smartphones to account for 96 per cent of mobile phone sales in American by the close of 2016, which is up from 76 per cent in 2011 and just 33 per cent in 2009.
The report claims the swift rise of US smartphone adoption is down to feature phone users converting during upgrades and replacements, mass enterprise use, and tech improvements such as 4G and NFC enticing data-hungry consumers.
Iain Gillott, president and founder of iGR, says: "The growth in the US smartphone market has been very strong in the last few years. But as the market becomes saturated, smartphone sales growth will slow.
"For OEMs who are hoping to gain, or regain, market share in the US, the time to act is now. By 2014, we believe the majority of the smartphone sales growth will be over."

But Apple fights back as the iPhone 4 receives the highest device share.
Mobile advertising network InMobi's latest report shows that Android is still leading the European mobile ad market, securing 34 per cent of impressions, which is a one per cent dip from November 2011.
Meanwhile, iOS secured 28 per cent, rising by five per cent, leaving RIM static in third place with 17 per cent.
Although Android leads by OS share, the popularity of Apple products is clear as the iPhone 4 took the highest number of impressions with nine per cent, also securing third spot with the original iPad.
Additionally, InMobi boosted its European footprint by 63 per cent in the 90 day period, equivalent to 15.2 billion monthly impressions.
Rob Jonas, VP and MD, EME, InMobi, says: "We expect to see continued growth in iOS, driven by last week’s unveiling of the new iPad, as well as the reduced pricing of the iPad 2.

Samsung makes official announcement after a couple of false starts.
Google's Ice Cream Sandwich OS debuted on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus in the UK during Q4 2011.
However, while the Android OS is gradually receiving additional rollouts on new and existing devices, it currently occupies just one per cent of all Android-powered devices.
Now, after Samsung originally dismissed the rumours of an ICS rollout to its flagship Galaxy S II phones, the Korean firm has tweeted, saying: "#ICS for #GALAXYSII will be available today in Europe including Poland, Hungary, Sweden, & Korea, & gradually roll out to other markets."
Additionally, JK Shin, president of IT & mobile communications division at Samsung Electronics, says: "We expect that our customers will enjoy an enhanced experience with their Galaxy device through this upgrade. Samsung is committed to satisfying our customer needs."
The S II has already sold over 20 million units and the ICS availability could increase the demand, especially as Samsung is yet to make an official announcement about the release of the Galaxy S III.

One-quarter worries social networking affects their children's real-world social life.
Leading social network Facebook has almost half a billion monthly mobile users, while its rival Twitter has around 60 million users, which both span across all demographics.
However, 59 per cent of British parents are concerned that their children aged between ten to 16 spend too much time using social media and 26 per cent are worried that it will affect their real-world social skills, according to MyVoucherCodes.co.uk.
48 per cent worry who they're talking to, which 43 per cent fret over cyber-bullying, and given that 41 per cent of American teens are bullied via mobile, there's every chance it could happen to British kids too.
Embarrassingly, over two-thirds admit they are clueless how much time their offspring spends on the platform and 53 per cent put this down to them owning smartphones.
Mark Pearson, chairman of MyVoucherCodes, says: "It's not all that surprising to hear that parents are concerned about the amount of time their kids are spending on social media, however it was interesting to find out how many of them think that this is having an effect on their social life offline.

Whether you’d like to do some real-time logging of data, or just want to control a project with your Android phone, [Thomas]‘s Arduino-Android Bluetooth connectioninstructable is sure to be useful
[Thomas]‘ build uses the very inexpensive JY-MCU Bluetooth module that’s available on eBay or dealextreme. This Bluetooth module ties directly into the Tx and Rx lines of the Arduino so a wireless serial connection between an Android device can be established. On the Android side of the build, Python for Android and the Scripting Layer for Android allow for reading wireless sensor data over Bluetooth.
While connecting an Android device to an Arduino is also possible with an IOIO or anAndroid Open Accessory dev kit, we haven’t seen much (barring this) about controlling or reading simple electronics with Android over Bluetooth. Sometimes you just don’t need an awesome dev board to bodge up a simple project, so we hope [Thomas]‘s very nice instructable will help get a few more builds off the ground.

Almost a year has passed since we last saw Marvell's Kinoma platform in person, but the time has finally arrived for its release. We got the chance to sit down with Peter Hoddie, VP of the Kinoma Platform, to learn a little bit more about his software and what Kinoma can bring to your smartphone experience. First, a quick refresher. Kinoma Play is technically an app, but in reality it serves as an entirely new UI for your Android device running versions 2.1 and up. The platform currently has 50 of its own apps -- written in Kinoma Play Script, a Javascript language -- that are obtained through the Kinoma store, and these apps can be accessed on their own or through Play's unique dashboard system.
There are currently five dashboards: Play, Search, Places, Music, and Send, with more to come as users ask for them. These dashboards group related apps and allow you to access them simultaneously in a truncated, list form -- for instance, the search dashboard returns results from Google, Yahoo, Wikipedia, Bing, and any other Kinoma app you choose to add. In addition to those useful dashboards, the software improves the UX by simply speeding things up. It's a lightweight platform with small apps (many are only 100 - 150KB in size) that launch quickly and run smoothly. Still not sold? Head on past the break to see Peter walk us through a little bit of what Kinoma can do, and read on to learn more about the platform.

Just six days have elapsed since the unveiling of Apple's third-generation iPad, and the rumor mill is already wildly speculating about what's in store for the next one. Korea Times has quoted an unnamed (yeah) Samsung official who has said that we can expect a 7.85-inch version of the tablet to arrive by the end of the year. As usual, it's fair to point out that the company is famous for producing a wide variety of prototypes, so we won't be delaying that pre-order. On firmer ground, they mentioned that as a key component supplier to the iPad, the Korean giant will earn around $10 billion manufacturing Cupertino's NAND flash chips, displays, mobile DRAM and processors -- so no matter who wins the tablet wars, the manufacturing conglomerate will probably do quite well.

Not only did some lucky gents in Vietnam get their hands on the new iPad while most people are still refreshing their delivery status page, they were also kind enough to run some benchmark tests. The results confirm that the RAM has been upped to 1GB, with the Geekbench score settling at 756. The processor remains at 1GHz, again, which is what we expected, but puts the kibosh on any speculation that there might have been a slight bump in clock speeds. If you want to see the full breakdown, hit the source for the goods.

Did Apple actually release a new iPad with LTE and a Retina Display last week? Or did it waft hallucinogens at us while we liveblogged, making us see only what we wanted to see? These doubts should be quashed when the third-gen tablet starts reaching consumers who are too populous to drug effectively. Fortunately, that process has already started, with some folks over in Vietnam claiming they've got hold of the retail version of the new iPad and posting evidence to prove it. Wander over to the video after the break and the images at the source link to catch a glimpse of what your pre-order might look like when it solidifies into reality.

Angry creatives take to Google Merchant Forums to blow the whistle.
Last week, we reported that Google may be forcing its developers to integrate the Google Wallet payments into their Android apps.
Now, Google has been accused of swindling European developers out of March payments for their Google Play apps – formerly known as Android Market – by providing them with false information that their funds had been transferred, according to Android Central.
Based on the comments, a payment should have been made on March 2nd, but almost two weeks later and bank accounts remain untouched.
The developers have been venting their frustrations with Google in the Google Checkout Merchant forums, and more than 100 posts have been made in week-old thread thus far.
Google generically responded to one developer, saying: "Thanks for reaching out to us. To ensure a faster resolution, I’ve forwarded your message to a team that’s better able to address your concerns. We’ll respond with additional information as soon as possible."

A look at the first smartphone that retailed at $900 in 1993, to the iPhone revolution and beyond.
Last month, TechNet revealed that the US mobile app market has generated almost 500,000 jobs, while the iPhone's 2007 launch is highlighted as the main driver behind apps and smartphones taking off.
Now, FrugalDad has created an infographic on the back of Technet's report, looking at the very first smartphone, the most popular apps and developments within the market across the past 20 years.

IDC increases its outlook on the back of a higher than expected fourth quarter.
Overall global tablet shipments for 2011 reached 68.7 million, leading IDC to predict 87.7 million tablet shipments would take place this year.
However, having seen the success and of the Kindle Fire and clamour for the new iPad, the analyst has revised 2012 estimates to 106 million.
Meanwhile, tablet shipments hit 28.2 million in Q4 2011, a 56.1 per cent rise on Q3, and an impressive 155 per cent rise year-on-year.
Going forward IDC expects Android to increase its market share, passing Apple tablet shipments in 2015.
Additionally, e-reader shipments are thought to have hit 10.7 million units, rising by 64. 3 per cent year-on-year.

Apple's new top of the range iPad – which comes with 64GB memory, wi-fi and 4G connectivity – is priced at £659, but Tesco retailed the tablet at just £49.99 due to an IT error, according to BBC News.
Perhaps, 'IT error' means John the IT guy made a blunder and will never work for an online retailer again.
While wide-eyed consumers were likely buying the devices by the bulk load, Tesco has withdrawn the incorrect price – a privilege it has thanks to its terms and conditions – and assures customers will not have any money withdrawn from their accounts.
A Tesco spokesperson, said: "We like to offer our customers unbeatable value, but unfortunately this is an IT error that is currently being corrected."

We were so busy fondling gaming machines and touchscreen Ultrabooks at CeBIT last week that we missed that tablet you see up there. That would be the Prestigio Multi 9.7, which -- surprise, surprise -- sports a 9.7-inch display. What's intriguing to us (besides the fact that we're generally obsessed with this sort of thing), is that we don't see nearly as many budget 10-inch tablets as we do 7-inchers. As you can see in the video below, it has a nice, fingerprint-resistant rubber back, along with an IPS display and Ice Cream Sandwich as an OS -- not too shabby for what's clearly a low-end device. Then again, the specs are appropriately modest: it has 8GB of built-in storage (expandable via microSD) and runs on a single-core 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 chip, bolstered by 1GB of RAM. According to Notebook Italia, it'll hit Italy in May for €199, though it's unclear if it will be available in other countries as well. Head past the break to find a video of it in action (skip to about 1:30 in), and hit that source link for more pics.

Eyeing the iPad 3, but have yet to take the pre-order plunge? Per The Next Web, your patience is about to be rewarded as Apple's updated its Reuse and Recycling program, which means owners of iPad 2s in "good condition" can sling them back to their maker in exchange for an Apple Store gift card. How much the mothership will subsequently send back naturally varies on what iPad 2 you've got -- ranging anywhere from $205 for the base 16GB WiFi model, all the way to $320 for the most capacious 64GB WiFi + 3G variant. Or you could try your luck with similar programs such as eBay's Instant Sale or the one from Cupertino's tablet rival to the north. And would you look at that, we've even gone ahead and put links to all three just below.

If you somehow haven't heard, Apple's new iPad officially goes on sale this Friday. As such, it's not surprising to find out that at least one US Best Buy location has already received its stock of the Retina display-loaded slates. Thanks to an anonymous tipster, we've received photos showing short-stacks of the pads just waiting to be given new homes. If you'll recall, Apple's online store has already sold out of its arrival day shipment stock for home delivery, with newer orders now set to go out on the 19th. That said, if you haven't reserved one and have to it come March 16th, you'll likely have another option for a retail camping adventure aside from your local Apple, AT&T and Verizon stores.

They're not center-stage right now, but Android tablets are still predicted to overtake the iPad within the next three years, according to IDC. The forecasters noted that Apple's worldwide share of the tablet market is shrinking with each new lower-priced Android competitor. Even as iPad sales continued to grow in 2011, surging 50 percent between Q3 and Q4, its market share fell during the same period, from 61.5 to 54.7 percent. That gives the iOS slate a weaker lead going into 2012 than suggested by earlier figures. Of course, the iPad remains an individual starlet in front of a troupe of Google dancers, so Apple's position as the upper-most vendor isn't under threat. In fact, IDC predicts it will remain the market leader in terms of revenue beyond 2016, which ought to put some fire in Amazon's belly.

Apple ranks as number one for customer satisfaction.
Smartphone users expect a lot of their device, and so they should, given that most manufacturers are pushing for consumers to pay premium prices for their creations, but despite this, battery life isn't meeting consumer expectations, according to JD Power and Associates.
It will be a wake up call to smartphone vendors as results show that battery performance is the key part for firms to secure customer satisfaction and loyalty.
Satisfaction levels vary based on 3G and 4G connectivity, with the latter ranking 6.1 out of ten, lower than 3G on 6.7 out of ten. This is due to 4G needing more power in order to search for the next-generation signal it's supposed to provide users.
Additionally, 4G smartphone use their devices for calls, texts, emails and web browsing more than 3G users, which takes an additional toll on the power.
Kirk Parsons, senior director of wireless services at J.D. Power and Associates, said: "Both carriers and manufacturers recognise the fact that battery life needs to be improved.

Users also insist that the 'superphones' come sporting a thin frame.
Last year, researcher Strategy Analytics claimed sales of superphones – a high end smartphone with at least a four-inch screen – would grow by 200 per cent, becoming the fastest growing type of handset on the market.
Now, the firm says 90 per cent of US and UK smartphone owners are hungry for mobile phone displays that are larger than the ones on their current devices, hoping that the screen on their upgrade will measure between four and 4.5-inches, on the condition that the device is thin and not bulky.
However, when looked at demographically, females would prefer smaller devices to males, while Android owners are looking to outsize iPhone owners.
Paul Brown, a director in the Strategy Analytics User Experience Practice, said: "Almost 90 per cent of existing smartphone owners surveyed chose a prototype smartphone with a display larger than their current device.
"This trend is driven by increased mobile web browsing capability, as well as engaging video and gaming experiences."

A location message sent from a stolen iPad by an anti-theft application turns out to be insufficient evidence to issue a search warrant for the Dutch authorities. A Dutch man reported his iPad as stolen to the Dutch authorities last month. Despite the fact that the rightful owner was able to locate his iPad within hours of the theft, thanks to the anti-theft application he had installed, the Dutch authorities did not issue a warrant to perform a search. According to the prosecutors, a search warrant is 'a very heavy measure,' that should only be used when there is 'sufficient suspicion.' The theft report by the owner was viewed as 'no objective evidence' in the case."

Those multi-gesture passcode locks on Android phones that give users (and their spouses) fits apparently present quite a challenge for the FBI as well. Frustrated by a swipe passcode on the seized phone of an alleged gang leader, FBI officials have requested a search warrant that would force Google to 'provide law enforcement with any and all means of gaining access, including login and password information, password reset, and/or manufacturer default code ("PUK"), in order to obtain the complete contents of the memory of cellular telephone.' The request is part of a case involving an alleged gang leader and human trafficker named Dante Dears in California. Dears served several years in prison for his role in founding a gang in California called PhD, and upon his release he went back to his activities with the gang, according to the FBI's affidavit."

Well, it looks like you won't have to wait until 8:00am tomorrow to possibly get your hands on the new iPad after all. Walmart has now confirmed that it will begin selling the 16GB WiFi-only model tonight at 12:01am local time at all of its 24-hour stores. That includes both the black and white versions, as well as the now $399 iPad 2 if the whole Retina display thing isn't for you. Of course, there's no guarantees that you'll get one if you show up -- Walmart says it only has a "limited supply."

As we saw the iPhone 4's release, a massive bump in screen resolution means that plenty of apps need to be updated to fully take advantage of all those extra pixels, and today has seen a few big name ones get optimized for the new iPad's Retina display. The biggest of those is Amazon's Kindle app, which now promises sharper fonts than ever, along with a few other changes including the ability to switch between books stored on your device and in the cloud. Also getting a Retina-friendly update is Evernote, which offers improved text editing in addition to the display tweak, plus the otherwise unchanged Vimeo, and Weather Pro, which now boasts high-resolution maps. Of course, those are just among the first of many -- we're guessing you won't have to wait too long for most of your favorites to be similarly updated.

Apple have today released the Ipad 3 in both Black and White Flavours, those wanting to buy multiples are flat out of luck as there is a restriction of 2 to any customer. The big new feature is the Retina display and improved connectivity. The iPad 3 is retailing at $599 for the 32GB version and $699 for the 64GB version. The upside of the iPad 3 release is that the iPad 2 is now at a cheaper price in the USA and UK. How long before it is jailbroken?

Up from $400 before Christmas.
The new iPad was only released in earlier on today – or last night depending which time zone you're in – but Apple's shares reached a record high of $600 last night ahead of the release, according to sister publication PCR.
The company experienced a two per cent growth during yesterday's trading, before levelling at $585.
It's a large rise from Christmas time when stocks were at $400, even though the original iPad and iPad 2 sold around 15 million units during Q4.
The report cites analysts as quoted by the FT that expect Apple shares to rise to over $700.

Android tablets are expected to become the leading devices on the market by 2015, taking over from iPad's leading sales, according to IDC.
However, ZDNet says Android Honeycomb for tablets didn't cope well when it was first launched, often crashing before eventually getting stabilised by Google. Now, history seems to be repeating itself with Honeycomb's successor, Ice Cream Sandwich.
Results show that Google apps will crash at least two-three times a day when using Android ICS-powered tablet, the ASUS Transformer Prime.
It's hardly the kind of experience users will be wanting when using the tablet's quad-core power, though it seems the blame can't be attributed to ASUS, as the Google fault runs on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 too.
Additionally, Gmail is highlighted as the worst kind of Google offering, crashing the most out of others, ejecting the user to the home screen.

Apple has launched 1080p high-definition movies on iTunes as the high-resolution iPad 3 and Apple TV devices arrive.
Previously the best Apple offered was 720p video, considerably less than that offered by the humble Blu-ray disc. Now in the iTunes 10.6 Store preferences, users can select which version of the movie downloads the user wants, either 720p or 1080p.
Apple is also encoding the higher resolution versions of the iTunes movies with a more advanced version of the H264 video compression standard which results in only a modest growth in file size.
Tech site Arstechnica set out to compare the new 1080p iTunes movies with traditional Blu-ray discs. Given that the downloaded files are much smaller than Blu-rays due to the more sophisticated encoding, Ars was nevertheless impressed and said the result was pretty close.
That said Blu-rays still have the advantage overall. Ars noted that the image quality of Blu-ray is still better and also noted that the physical disc format often offers uncompressed audio, language options and special features.

As the new iPad launches fans everywhere are rushing to pick one up, or are they?
Today marks the launch of Apple's new Retina-enhanced iPad, with the industry watching to see if Apple can break records again with the new model of its best-selling tablet. Competitors continue to release other options for consumers with Google's Android OS and Microsoft's upcoming Windows 8 giving manufacturers the ability to sell their own "iPad killer". Unfortunately for them, Canaccord Securities analyst Mike Walkley told investors that he believes Apple's domination will continue unchecked.
"We believe Apple has extended its leadership position in the fast growing tablet market, and we have increased our 2012 and 2013 iPad tablet share estimates," Walkley wrote, according to BGR. "We believe the new iPad has raised the bar relative to competing tablets with impressive hardware specs, competitive pricing, and the leading software ecosystem of over 200k iPad-specific applications. At MWC, our meetings with Android OEMs focused on smartphones as tablet OEMs indicated difficulty competing with the iPad 2, let alone the new iPad."
Canaccord believes Apple will sell 65.6 million iPads in 2012, up from 55.9 million in 2011. Walkley has estimated that Apple could sell 90.6 million iPads in 2013, up from his previous estimate of 79.7 million.
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster concurs, estimating sales of 60 million iPads in 2011. Apple Insider reports that Munster expects Apple to sell over 1 million iPads within the first 24 hours of launch.
Early this morning, fans were lined up at Apple Stores and other big-box retailers, like Best Buy, to pick up the new model. 450 people lined up outside of Apple's Ginza store in Tokyo, according to the Associated Press. The Apple Store in Hong Kong used an online lottery with preset times for winners to keep crowds down. TheBoston Globe reported that 200 people waited outside of the Apple Store there. On the other hand, Business Insider noted that while crowds massed around the larger stores, many smaller retail outlets had no lines waiting for their iPads.
Can Apple continue to hold lightning in a bottle, or can Google and Microsoft catch up this year?

Are we shocked to see an untethered iOS 5.1 jailbreak for the new iPad? Not so much. Are we surprised to see it arrive so quick? Hell, yes. The iPad 2's untethered jailbreak took an eternity, whereas this new tunnel seems to have been dug during one fleeting Friday night. The hacker to thank is i0n1c, aka Stefan Esser -- a man who moves so fast his YouTube clip reportedly had 28 likes before it had even finished uploading. Just leap that final fence, Stefan, by releasing your jailbreak to the public, and we shall re-christen you bi0n1c. (Unless you want to keep your current handle, which would also be fine.)

While it may not be the good news the Android army was hoping for, TWC's got some Big Apple-sized bits to share. Via its Untangled blog, Time Warner announced it's finally adding local channels to itsiPhone / iPad app and TWCTV site, including CBS, NBC, FOX, ABC and Univision (because you can never have enough novelas). Unfortunately, the goodies won't be up for everyone's viewing pleasure, as the additions are only for folks within the NYC boroughs. That said, the cable giant plans to add "a few more markets by the end of the year." Want to find out if your favorite local news show made the cut? The full list can be found at the source link below.

Today is the day many have been patiently, or not so patiently, waiting for. The new iPad saunters onto shelves around much of the globe, and into the sweaty palms of the "gotta-have-its." So, were you dazzled by that display? Or tempted by the LTE and new graphics chip? Maybe you're upgrading, or treating the partner (by treating yourself)? Perhaps you were hoping for the rumored smaller device, or just gotta have something Android. Whatever camp you fall into we want to know about it, tell us

Unless your common sense is blinded by Apple fanaticism you'll know that trying to pick up an Apple product on the day of release at an Apple Store is a fools errand.
The only thing you'll get for your troubles is an insincere head shake from a smarmy paid-to-be-polite staffer and the faint sense that you're about to buy your way into a hipster cult. Instead, those in the market for an ego boost and a shiney new iDevice will find they'll have much better luck online.
If you're anything like us, you'll want to minimise the time it takes between deciding you want the new iPad and confirming payment, before the old voice of reason starts whispering lies like "you can't afford it", "do you really need another one? You already have an iPad 2" and "You won't be able to feed your kids for at least a month if you get one."
So, we've thrown together a list of alternative places you can get the new ipad and stuck it below. Click fast, ignore the voices and think of how cool you'll look on the train...
As always, if you have a preferred retailer not on the list let us know and we'll add it.

Spark Trophies will soon be getting a long-needed overhaul in both design and tablet support. Like Spark 360, expect to see a tighter layout, as well as bug fixes and enhanced functionality on tablet devices.
While I’m on the subject, I should probably discuss Account Regions – a feature that’s been around for a while, but which I suspect may be misleading and/or confusing.
Spark Trophies has the ability to retrieve its data from us.playstation.com, or uk.playstation.com – the US and EU servers, respectively. When you switch account regions in Account Settings, this is what you’re selecting – where to get the information. Note that you don’t have to belong to either region – from my experience, you can use either. I have noticed, however, that PSN EU tends to be more reliable, and faster.
So why not use PSN Europe by default? The problem is that many users find that one or the other is missing certain games. I’m not sure what causes this, but my best guess is that it’s some quirk in how PSN syncs trophies with the web sites and/or availability of games across regions.
If you find that Trophies isn’t working as well as it should, first thing you can try is switching regions – that is, unless you discover missing trophies. If that happens, you can always switch back.

Seven-inch device could unveiled in May at $149
Just weeks ago it was reported that Taiwan's Asus would follow Samsung, HTC and Motorola and become the latest maker of an official Google device.
That was a rumour, but now Androidandme has quoted a supply chain source that claims the Asus partnership is a "done deal", with Google planning to launch "a tablet of the highest quality."
The Nexus tablet was initially expected to feature quad-core Tegra 3 processors, retailing between $199-249, but sources say the Tegra has been removed to reduce the tablet to between $149-$199.
The price cut would make it a truly affordable low-end option for new buyers, undercutting the world's number two selling tablet, the Kindle Fire, which is also powered by Android.
The device is expected to be unveiled in May at the CTIA Wireless show, potentially running on Android Jelly Bean, which is also expected to be released in Q2.

Vietnamese scammers rip off One and One Story and sell it on the Apple App Store.
Mattia Traverso developed the puzzler as a Flash game, and scored a big hit with fans of browser based fun.
But as he prepared to launch the game on iOS he was shocked to discover it was already on the Apple App Store courtesy of what he thinks it a Vietnamese developer
He told Kotaku.com: "The original version was made in Flash, which is fairly easy to decompile. They just took the old .swf, took the graphics and probably rewrote the code."
It's not the first example of this kind of thing. Kotaku cites recent examples such as Pokemon Yellow app and the row between Zynga and NimbleBit over Ridiculous Fishing and its clone Ninja Fishing.
Unfortunately indy developers with a relative lack of funds and commercial nous are particularly susceptible to this worrying trend. Apple is reportedly looking into the matter.

Apple's post-Jobs chief Tim Cook announced that some of the company's mountain of cash will be used to pay a dividend to shareholders and initiate a US$10 billion share buyback scheme.
The move makes a break from the policy of famously tight Steve Jobs that refused to discuss the prospect of sharing profits with shareholders, despite record profits.
Apple will now return US$45 billion to holders of Apple stock and marks the first payment of a dividend since Apple's lean times in the mid 1990s. Cook said that the payout still meant the company had a sizable war chest for "strategic opportunities" read acquisitions.
The payment of a dividend also makes Apple stock more attractive for institutional investors that typically require a dividend in order to hold onto stock. "We hope it will broaden the investor base to attract new investors who don't currently have Apple stock," Cook said.
Such is the size of the dividend that Apple will end up forking out just under $10 billion every year and will make the firm one of the highest dividend paying firms in the US.
No doubt this will propel the stock to even further heady heights than the current $600 price tag, already making Apple the most valuable publicly traded company in the world.

World of Warcraft could yet be released on iOS, providing developer Blizzard can find a way of acceptably mapping the MMO’s controls onto touch screens
“You've got to put an interface, what do you do?†WoW senior producer John Lagrave told Eurogamer. “Maybe we'll stumble on the great way to put WOW on the phone - maybe we won't, but we're certainly looking into it.
"We won't do it until we think it's decent. So we certainly look at that, but we just haven't solved it. What we've done with WOW [with the World of Warcraft Mobile Armory app] on mobile devices is very simplistic: view the armoury, you check your auctions – not just on mobile but also on web.
"When we have an epiphany, everyone will know. But for now, no epiphany!"
Lagrave also stated that it’s possible the studio may choose to port a portion of the game – such as a fishing mini-game or pet battles – to iOS, although nothing has been confirmed as of yet.

Apple's readying for the next console war with its new iPad
[h=3]Apple[/h]Established in 1976, Apple is a multinational corporation (corporate headquarters based in California)...
www.apple.com
The new iPad looks much like the old iPad, until you turn it on. Then you see the razor-sharp clarity of the 2048 x 1536 screen, gleaming with more resolution than a 1080p HDTV. Don't be lulled into complacency by the beauty of the display. There's an army being created because of this new screen, and it's awaiting the signal to come forth and do battle in the next console war.
The first step in Apple's strategy has begun simply by making the 2048 x 1536 resolution the new standard for the iPad. The first reaction of game developers to this new high-resolution screen is that they will be creating a high-res version of their game as soon as they reasonably can. It's usually not a difficult process; some developers (ones who have been listening to the rumors) have been preparing their original artwork in higher resolution for months. Already, some of the key games like Infinity Blade II have appeared with high-resolution versions. Many more games are on the way; every publisher will want to take advantage of the higher resolution, if for no other reason than to produce gorgeous screen shots of their games. A few months from now, it seems like a safe bet that there will be hundreds of games for the new iPad with high-resolution graphics. By the end of the year, it will be thousands of games.
Why is this significant? Let's look at another piece of Apple's strategy for a clue. If you look on Apple's web site, the new Apple TV is listed as an iPad accessory. The new Apple TV can now handle full 1080p output for movies, and with AirPlay or through a cable your new iPad's output can be routed to your HDTV. All of those games that are soon to be in high-resolution will look excellent on your HDTV. The strategy is coming into focus now, isn't it?
"Gamers have learned to live with and enjoy FPS games on consoles, despite the apparent controller limitations. The same thing may well happen with tablet games"
Put this together with the persistent rumor that Apple is planning to release an 'iTV' - an Apple HDTV with some special features (perhaps Siri integration), which would doubtless include a version of the App Store. Probably at that same time, the stand-alone Apple TV box would gain the App Store as well. (Or maybe a newer version of the Apple TV hardware, if they feel the need to upgrade the processor.) Instantly, thousands of free or low cost games will be available in the living room. All of those games that were upgraded to better than HD resolution for the new iPad will be ready to be delivered right to your new iTV (or Apple TV plus your current HDTV). This neatly gets around the problem that most new hardware platforms have, that of limited software at launch. Usually it takes months to get a significant number of games for a new platform, if not years. Apple will have hundreds or thousands of HD apps when their new platform launches.
Now you can see the soldiers pouring out of Apple's Trojan Horse, assaulting the current rulers of the living room, the console makers. Apple's games will be just as good-looking to the casual eye as console games. No, they won't have the in-depth, immersive gameplay of the best console titles. Not at first, anyway. The limitation that you need to download the iOS games will keep them from becoming 25 gigabyte behemoths. That's just a temporary limitation; some of which can be sidestepped by clever design. For instance, large intro animations and cut scenes often take up gigabytes of space on disc; those can easily be streamed instead of waiting for a download. Massive content can be doled out in chunks if the design is tweaked to allow for that; intelligent downloading in the background can help, too.

The controllers... how can you have good games without great controls? "Playing first-person-shooters just doesn't work on a tablet, you don't get the great control you have on a console!" goes the argument from a hardcore gamer. True, as far as it goes. It's interesting to note that this is the same argument that PC gamers threw at console gamers many years ago. "Consoles may be OK for kiddie games, but real games are played on a PC," went the party line. The FPS game was purely a PC game... until Halo arrived. Even then, it was clear that the combination of a mouse and a keyboard was far superior for controlling an FPS. Microsoft toyed with the idea of allowing Xbox Halo players to play against the (then recently-released) PC version of Halo. They ran some tests, and quickly found that even mediocre Halo PC players mopped up the best Xbox Halo players without breaking a sweat. Plans to cross-connect the PC and console game audiences were quietly shelved.
Yet, here we are, with gamers having learned to live with and enjoy FPS games on consoles, despite the apparent controller limitations. The same thing may well happen with tablet games. The tablet itself can be used as a controller if the main game screen is being sent to your HDTV. Certainly, tablets and smartphones as controllers have certain advantages; they have lots of sensors, touch screens, can provide hidden information easily... and you can add a Bluetooth controller that looks a lot like a standard console controller, or for that matter a Bluetooth keyboard if you want to get closer to a PC interface for games. (Easy keyboard availability onscreen on tablets also makes typical MMORPGs much more interesting than they are on consoles.)
"We are seeing the beginning of the next console war now, even before E3 when Nintendo will introduce the Wii U and hopefully reveal key details of its features"
While you're thinking about Apple's assault on the living room, don't forget that Google is working towards the very same goal with Google TV. While the platform has yet to get much traction, Google is by no means finished with their attempt to gain a foothold in the living room. Google's acquisition of Motorola gives it a significant set-top box business, and Google is no doubt trying to cut deals with cable companies to include Google TV functionality in future set-top boxes. For that matter, almost all TV manufacturers are making the most of their new TVs Internet-connected with apps, and some with streaming-game services such as Gaikai or OnLive built in.
Is it any wonder that Microsoft and Sony want to take more time to figure out their next generation console strategy? Microsoft has plans for Windows 8, with a unifying interface that works across smartphones, tablets, computers, and the Xbox. Sony also has a full lineup of phones, tablets, computers and a dedicated handheld console as well as the PS3. Notice that Microsoft is pushing Xbox Live across all its platforms, and Sony is spreading the Sony Entertainment Network (which includes the PlayStation Network) across all of its devices, too.

The new iPad has sold 3 million units, Apple has revealed
Update:Apple has now revealed actual sales figures - the new iPad sold 3 million units since launching on March 16.
"The new iPad is a blockbuster with three million sold―the strongest iPad launch yet," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. "Customers are loving the incredible new features of iPad, including the stunning Retina display, and we can't wait to get it into the hands of even more customers around the world this Friday."
By comparison, the original iPad took 28 days just to reach 1 million sold.
Original story:
Apple's new iPad could have larger implications for the games business, with aprojected 66 million units sold in 2012, and its launch weekend would appear to be quite strong, according to Apple.
CEO Tim Cook told investors that the new iPad had a "record weekend" and Apple is "thrilled." By exactly what measure the latest tablet had a "record" is not clear at the moment, since the company still hasn't issued any concrete sales data.
Demand for the new iPad clearly has been strong, however, as Apple did sell out of its units online before launching last Friday, and wait times for new buyers are stretching out to as much as two or three weeks. Apple commented that its customer response has been "off the charts."
Apple took the same approach last year with the iPad 2, refusing to release hard numbers following launch, although some analysts have speculated that iPad 2 sold around a million during launch weekend alone.
Apple released the new iPad in 10 countries simultaneously.

The new iPad was upgraded with a display an HD junkie would give his universal remote for, but the Apple TV simply received an update to a capability many believe the original should've had the first go around: support for 1080p content. In addition to that all-important resolution bump, both this and thelast-gen model received a modest software update that brings a few features and enhancements. Those tweaks aren't necessarily worth a review, if you ask us, especially since the price remains the same and existing Apple TV owners will reap the benefits of most of these improvements. Still, we'd be remiss if we didn't poke around just a bit. Follow past the break to see what's changed.

Apple's latest hot ticket seems to be a tad too hot to hold, some users are reporting. New iPad owners on the MacRumors forums and Apple's own support community complain that the slab's lower left corner can get a little warm during extended use. Don't get excited though, reports seem to vary by user -- some are reporting that their tablet becomes too uncomfortable to hold while others say that it only gets "slightly warm" and that it's "expected." How's your new iPad treating you? Click on through to the comments and let us know.

Hackers have seeming strolled right past any security measure Apple has put into the new iPad, achieving jailbreaks within hours of its launch.Multiple hackers have announced their achievement, with the new device having been unlocked via at least three different measures - including untethered solutions.Jailbreaking iOS devices allows users access to a popular unofficial app Store called Cydia, through which they can download thousands of apps not available on the official iTunes App Store.According to the ZDNet report (via GI), it won't be long before the new iPad hacks are released and users can jailbreak their device - but hackers warn against installing any firmware updates on the third-gen iPad in case Apple patches its security flaws. The third iPad launched last Friday to positive reviews and rabid crowds.http://www.computerandvideogames.com...-within-hours/

"I think I will use it to fry my eggs in the morning."
Apple has already sold over three million new iPads in three days, but consumer complaints have already started too, with many taking to forums to discuss their next-generation tablet overheating.
Customers have gathered on the official Apple Support Communities to reveal that the iPad gets hot after as little as 30 minutes use, something that didn't happen with the iPad 2.
Others have highlighted that LTE could be to blame, heating the iPad up so much that it becomes uncomfortable to hold, while others announced they would try frying eggs and bacon on the tablet. It could spell the nickname of the 'FriPad'.
This wouldn't be the first Apple glitch from its most recent offerings. The iPhone 4S allows Siri to unlock the device to unknown people, while the iPhone 4 came riddled with signal faults.

New data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech will be met with a mixed response from Nokia.
One the one hand it seems its switch to WP7 at the high end is paying off. Indeed, its Lumia 800 phone took 87 per cent of all sales on the Microsoft OS in the UK.
But this is countered by the dramatic fall in Symbian which, let's not forget, is still the platform of choice for its lower end handsets.
Symbian's share was 12.4 per cent one year ago compared with 2.4 per cent now.
Elsewhere Kantar Worldpanel notes that WP7 has a 2.5 per cent share across Europe, and that Apple has increased its share of the British smartphone market from 22.7 per cent a year ago to 28.7 per cent in 2012.

LA Noire Touch 'highest performance' game available on tablet, claims streaming service
Video Game streaming service OnLive has announced the launch of LA Noire: Touch Edition, which brings Team Bondi's hit game to tablets.
OnLive runs games on remote hardware, and streams the content to coustomers, allowing those with low-spec systems to play high-end games without the need for costly upgrades.
With the new touch games, this means subscribers to the service can play console and PC games ported for touch interface on a tablet.
LA Noire: Touch Edition is "the highest-performance console video game developed specifically for touch-enabled play via mobile cloud gaming," claims OnLive.
Onlive offers twenty-five games available for free demo, some redesigned for touch interface, others that include a virtual gamepad on the screen. In addition, there are two hundred other games that support the use of OnLive's universal wireless controller.

A survey of over 2,000 mobile app developers has found evidence of waning interest in Google's Android OS for a fourth consecutive quarter.
Gamesindustry.biz reports that the survey, conducted by Appcelerator and analyst firm IDC every three months, polled 2,173 developers and found that 78.6 per cent expressed interest in developing for Android.
While that's a healthy figure, it's a five per cent drop from the previous quarter and the report claims it is "consistent with the trend of small but steady erosion in Android interest over the last four quarters."
Appcelerator strategist Mike King told Reuters the broad range of devices with which Android is compatible was to blame, saying: "The fragmentation of the platform, which Google seems unable to curtail, is driving this drop in interest."
By contrast, the resoundingly defragmented iOS is as popular as ever. Eighty-nine per cent of respondents said they wanted to work on iPhone, with 88 per cent keen on iPad. Just 66 per cent of those polled expressed an interest in developing for Android tablets.
One possible silver lining for Google is an apathetic response to Facebook's social graph; of the 11 biggest developer priorities on Facebook, effectively harnessing the social graph ranked a lowly eighth.
Thirty-nine per cent of respondents said Google's network of services - including YouTube, Gmail, Google Maps and theGoogle+ social network - was more important to them than Facebook's social graph.

While your Xperia might not have gotten its planned Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade just yet, Sony's come clean on its first phone to wield Google's latest straight from the factory: the Xperia Neo L. Appearing on the company's Chinese website, we wouldn't expect a redux of the mostly 2011 hardware to go on a world tour anytime soon. Those buying will be treated to a 4-inch FWVGA (854 x 480) screen that's a smidge bigger than the original yet still carries a 1GHz worth of Snapdragon coupled to 512MB of RAM. Unlike the archetype, though, the camera gets downgraded to a 5 megapixels in the rear while retaining the same VGA shooter in the front. Naturally there's no word on price or availability, but at least for diehard fanboys can have their ice cream and eat it too.

The TiVo iOS app has been updated v1.9, and whether you're on iPad or iPhone there's a slew of new fixes and tweaks available. On both platforms, the Facebook login has been streamlined, there's To Do List / Season Pass management for Series3 DVRs, ability to create a WishList search and more. The iPad version features a new full-screen Browse UI (shown above) and collapsible folders while the iPhone receives high res retina display quality images. Zatz Not Funny mentions those higher quality pics will come to the iPad as well in the next few weeks, while TiVo's blog post mentions all of these features will arrive in its Android app(s) this summer. We say apps plural, because that's including a specialized Tablet version due in the springtime. For now however, the changelogs for the iOS versions are available at the links below.

All this talk about overheating iPads isn't getting Apple all that excited, apparently. The company issued a fairly noncommittal response on the matter, stating that in spite of the tablet's LTE support, fast processing, battery life and resolutionary display magic, it still "operate[s] well within [Apple's] thermal specifications." That said, if anyone happens to have concern with regards to an overheated lap, "they should contact AppleCare." There may be a chance, after all, that you've been holding it wrong.

Analysts revise upwards after the bumper weekend for new device.
What global recession? Apple's golden touch shows no sign of going anywhere, as demonstrated by 3m sales of the new iPad last weekend.
The apparently insatiable hunger of the public for Apple tablets has compelling analysts to re-think their projections.
So, in a note to investors, Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray is now forecasting 66m sales of the new device in 2012, up from the earlier prediction of 60m.
He said: â€We believe the unprecedented ramp of the iPad over the past year is evidence that the tablet market will be measurably larger than the PC market."
Specifically he's projecting 12m sales this quarter alone. By 2015, the sales number will reach 176m.

The new iPad was only released on Friday and it is already accounting for 5.5 per cent of iPad traffic in the US, according toChitika Insights.
Based on 24 hours use from March 19th-20th, new iPad traffic has already made an impression on the country, particularly in California – the home of Apple's HQ – which leads with 6.3 per cent of traffic.
Meanwhile, Connecticut followed with 6.1 per cent, Nevada secured 5.8 per cent, while New York secured 5.6 per cent.
The device experienced sales of three million in three days across a number of countries and though it's unclear how many of those were purchased by Americans, the impact of the new tablet is obvious.

Forget sleep, more than half of the action takes place in bed.
Mobile entertainment portal MocoSpace conducted the ‘Where u play?’ survey to discover 96 per cent of people play mobile games at home and not on-the-go as commonly thought, while more than half play the games in bed when indoors.
Following the bed, 41 per cent play in the living room, five per cent play in the bathroom, while just one per cent play when tucking into food at the dinner table.
Additionallym 51 per cent play for over an hour a day, while a third play for three hours a day. Worryingly, ten per cent play mobile games for more than three hours a day at work, giving complete disregard to keeping their jobs, choosing to favour their phones.
Social gaming was the most popular genre with 62 per cent, followed by action with 53 per cent, puzzle with 40 per cent and casino style with 28 per cent.
Justin Siegel, CEO and co-founder, MocoSpace, says: "This report should make every console gaming company nervous. Mobile gaming is not a companion to consoles, but rather it’s attacking them on their home turf: the couch, the La-Z-Boy and even the bedroom."

Overtakes the US to grab top spot.
App analytics firm Flurry claims emerging market China is one step nearer to becoming developed, leading the globe for Android and iOS smartphone and tablet activations with 24 per cent of the market.
China started 2011 with just eight per cent of the market, growing very slightly in August to ten per cent, which has more than doubled in the space of six months.
However, China's rise has been to America's downfall, ensuring the states fell to 21 per cent this month from what was 28 per cent at the start of 2011. It should be noted that the US actually rose throughout the year, spiking to 34 per cent as recent as December 2011 before plummeting at the turn of the year.
This supports our report that China is set to become the largest smartphone market in 2012, as many make the transition from feature phones to smartphones.
Additionally, China leads the world for 'app session' growth – the launch of an app and a minimum use of two minutes – securing a 1126 per cent from Q1 2012 to Q1 2012, while Argentina and the Philippines follow with 599 per cent and 546 per cent, respectively.

The end of iPad as we know it.
Apple is currently the big chief when it comes to the tablet market, shipping over 15.4 million iPads in Q4 2011 and three million new iPads over the last weekend.
However, Abi Research says that will change in 2016, when the rollout of sub $400 tablets will overwhelm premium-priced iPads to secure a 60 per cent of the tablet market.
Buyers currently favour tablets with a nine-inch screen or larger, accounting for 75 per cent of sales in 2011, but this is also set to change as users move towards devices between seven and nine-inches instead for more convenience.
Jeff Orr, group director, consumer research, says: "The majority of new entrant media tablet models have been in the sub-$400 segment that focuses on growth markets like India and China. The strong wave of growth in this segment over the next few years is expected to be driven by the adoption in emerging markets."
Further results show that the e-reader market grew by a third in 2011, with shipments to grow by 20 per cent in 2012.

Size upgrade would outmatch rival device the Galaxy S II.
Apple's new iPad has barely been unpacked, but iPhone 5 rumours have already surfaced from South Korean media, according toReuters.
The report cites an "industry source" that claims Apple has decided on a 4.6-inch retina display for the next iPhone, over a full inch larger than the 3.5-inch screen featured on the iPhone 4S.
The size upgrade would officially regard the device as a superphone – a high-end smartphone with a four-inch or larger display – to put it ahead of the 4.3-inch display of Samsung's flagship Galaxy S II device.
We recently reported that almost 90 per cent of smartphone owners fancy a superphone-sized screen for their upgrade, so Apple may do well to listen to consumer desires.

Milestone hit in ten days netting the firm over $5m.
Along with the unveiling of the new iPad on March 7th, Apple also revealed iPhoto for iOS, a notable move as the app was previously just available for Macs.
Now, The Loop reports Apple has passed the milestone for one million iPhoto downloads within ten days of its release.
The premium app is priced at $4.99 and doesn't seem to have deterred iPad and iPhone users, which is good news for Apple that will have made more than $5 million from sales.
Of course, the sum is just small change compared to the $98 billion nest egg the company is currently sitting on.
The app features a series of functions including multi-touch, speed, enhancements, and social media integration, seemingly with a view to rival Adobe PhotoShop at a fraction of the price

To date, it seems that Mountain View has employed a loose definition of the term "integrated," neglecting to offer such Google Voice features as a unified messaging inbox, or an option to access voicemails without switching back to the dedicated app. Well we have some good news for those of you that haven't completely abandoned voice-based communication. The latest GV update adds a special topping to that Ice Cream Sandwich (sorry, Gingerbread men), letting you launch visual voicemails directly from your Android call log -- and bringing Voice integration a step closer to actually being integrated. You'll also have the power to slow down a message to jot down a callback number, or speed it up to get to the juicy stuff, like a callback number. Full details are at the source link below, or on your very own ICS handset after a quick trip to Play.

India's undoubtedly seen its fair share of cheap slabs, but if folks are willing to shell out a bit more than2,000 or 2,900 rupees, they can end up snagging a better-specced piece of hardware. Priced at a modest 8,900 rupees (around $180), Zync's launching its Z990 7-inch slate, which claims to be the first to hit the Indian market with Android four-dot-oh on board. Alongside Big G's fresh treat are a TFT, 800 x 480 display, 1.2GHz CPU with 1GB of RAM, plus HDMI and microUSB ports. Naturally, and perhaps most importantly, the Z990 has the credentials to let you get all your favorite content via Google Play. Zync's got the tab up for grabs, and you can pop one in your cart now by heading over to the Letsbuy shop, linked down below to make it easier for you.

One of the advertised augmentations in Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition is that it has an iPad port. Developer Overhaul Games has revealed some images of Baldur's Gate running on the iPad, but that's about it. Other than it existing, nothing else is known about the iPad version.Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition will launch this summer with the original game, Tales of the Sword Coast expansion pack, and "a new adventure and new party member." Our initial reaction upon receiving the announcement for King of Fighters Android was something along the lines of, "Yes! Finally, SNK Playmore must have read all our letters and decided to make a special version of King of Fighters XIII with the Cell Saga androids from Dragon Ball Z! Yes."Well, it turns out that's not what this is. Instead, King of Fighters Android is King of Fighters game for Google's Android OS, which is probably a more reasonable business decision in the long run. Judging from the screenshots below, it appears to be based on King of Fighters XIII, or at least heavily influenced by its art style. The game features 20 fighters, five different play modes and unlockable bonus content like trading cards and concept art.Available now for $4.99, the game is officially compatible with the Galaxy S 2, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Xperia Acro HD, and Xperia Play, which should be a good fit for the title considering it has actual buttons. Compatibility with other Android devices is untested and should be attempted at your own risk; two marketplace reviews already indicate the game does not function on the Galaxy Nexus.http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/22/ki...ices-for-4-99/

Talk of Worldwide Developer's Conference taking place stirs up the rumour mill.
CultofMac reports that Apple has pencilled the next WWDC event into its diary, taking place on June 11th.
If that is the case, it could mean the unveiling of iOS 6, the upgrade to Apple's existing operating system.
However, while the 'corporate event' may take place in summer, it's unlikely delegates will glimpse the iPhone 5, given that the 4S was released in October, and Apple is expected to do the same for its successor this year.
Interestingly, we recently reported that Android Jelly Bean is also expected to be launched in summer, which could bring the two platforms head-to-head once again.

RIM loses top spot to Apple in its own backyard for the first time.
RIM has had a hard time in recent months and now it has lost leadership of the Canadian mobile market for the first time ever, according to Bloomberg and IDC.
The Ontario-based BlackBerry maker shipped 2.08 million devices in Canada last year, which was beaten by 2.85 million iPhone shipments.
It's an interesting development, given that BlackBerry was the top dog in 2008 when RIM secured sales fivefold the number of Apple and again in 2010 outselling the iPhone by over 500,000.
The power shift is likely down to the increasing developments Apple is putting into its devices such as Siri and dual-core processors, while RIM can't offer any of those features at present.
In light of these results, RIM really needs its BlackBerry 10 OS to be a success, and more importantly, it needs to arrive sooner rather than later.

The next generation iPhone could have a larger 4.6-inch Retina display according to a Reuters report, citing a South Korean newspaper.
The normally conservative Reuters has apparently placed stock in a report that surfaced in the South Korean Maeil Business Newspaper which suggested that Apple has already placed orders for 4.6-inch screens from Apple's display makers LG and Samsung.
Reuters also said the device would appear in the second quarter, which is clearly nonsense. The actual article in question states the 'summer' which has a rather more plausible time frame, possibly including September and October in line with current expectations.
The question of whether Apple would really leap frog from the relatively small 3.5-inches all the way up to the current monsterphone vogue of 4.6-inches is a matter that PCR will leave for readers to consider.
The Verge published some comparison photos of the iPhone 4 next to a Galaxy Nexus (pictured) which has the same size screen as rumoured.

EDIT: Rovio chief executive Mikael Hed has since told Reuters that in fact it will be developing a Windows Phone 7 version of Angry Birds Space.
Angry Birds Space won't be released on Windows Phone, developer Rovio has said, because the returns on offer from what the Finnish Studio describes as a "smaller platform" wouldn't justify the work required.
Speaking to Bloomberg, CMO Peter Vesterbacka said: "We're the number one app in the Windows Phone app store, but it's a big undertaking to support it, and you have to completely rewrite the application.
"If you look at activations, Apple's iOS and [Google's] Android are clearly bigger than any other platform. We want to be on all screens, but we have to consider the cost of supplying the smaller platforms. With Windows Phone, it's a lot of work to technically support it."
Bad news for Microsoft, then, and even worse for Nokia, which has pinned its hopes of revival on Windows Phone, which ships on its entire range of handsets. Vesterbacka expects Space to push theAngry Birds series past a billion lifetime downloads in the next few months, and two billion by the end of the year; on iPhone, it's already replaced Draw Something at the summit of the Top Paid and Top Grossing charts.

The promise of an Army app store has been bandied about for quite a while now, but it looks like it's slowly becoming a reality. The US Army has today officially announced a prototype of the Army Software Marketplace, a web-based app store that currently includes twelve different training apps that have been approved for Army-wide use. That includes just iOS apps initially, but the Army promises that it will soon include apps for Android devices as well. It's also of course looking to expand considerably beyond those dozen odd apps, noting that the prototype is just "a first step in establishing and exercising new submission and approval processes that will eventually enable Army members, organizations and third-party developers to release applications for Army-wide distribution." And you thought the approval process for some of the current app stores was stringent.

Privacy concerns trump user targeting.
This one has been coming for a while. Apple flagged up its strategy six months ago, warning developers it would act against UDID tracking because of pressure from government and sections of the media.
The UDID is an alphanumeric string, unique to each device, that's used by developers, ad networks, analytics firms and so on to track a users app and site activity. It's a pretty important tool when so many content providers rely on ad funds to monetise their business.
But Apple is worried about UDIDs because, unlike web cookies, they can’t be cleared or deleted. And there are clearly ethical concerns around tracking users when they haven't given specific consent.
According to TechCrunch Apple is already rejecting apps that record UDIDs. It quotes developers including Fluik and Playhaven as having products declined.
It says two of the 10 review teams started doing blanket rejections of apps that access UDIDs this week. Next week, that will rise to four the ten teams, and keep escalating until all 10 teams are turning down apps that are still using UDIDs.

And now for some weather.
comScore's MobiLens report says nearly 37 per cent of smartphone users in EU5 reported accessing news sites via an app or browser in January 2012. That's an increase of 74 per cent over the past year.
Activity was highest in the UK, with nearly half (46.8 per cent) of smartphone users reporting having accessed news sites at least once in the past month.
Growth was fastest among the Spanish smartphone audience, which grew its monthly news access rate by127 per cent.
Overall, in the three months ending January 2012, 39.5m EU5 smartphone users accessed news sites via an app or browser on a monthly basis – that's 36.9 per cent of the total smartphone audience.
“The continued growth in smartphone adoption in Europe has fuelled the increasing consumption of news and information on-the-go,†said Hesham Al-Jehani, comScore Europe product manager for mobile.

Apple's newest iPad could be making a trek over to the Orient very soon, if this latest regulatory filing is any indication. As recently as last week, China's Quality Certification Center granted that Cupertino slate -- bearing model number A1416 -- its seal of approval, paving the way for a retail debut in the region. If and when it does make it to official sales channels, expect that particular unit to be of the WiFi-only variety, as additional clearance is necessary for network-enabled variants. Despite an ongoing trademark scuffle over Chinese ownership of the iPad moniker, the company is expected to carry on with business as usual, adding to its near 70 percent domination of the tablet category in that region.

First Star Software's Spy vs. Spy, originally released in 1984 for Commodore 64, was a two-player game of sabotage and intrigue, as the famous spies from Mad Magazine stalked an embassy, stealing confidential documents and other items while setting ridiculous traps for each other.
WB Games sent Joystiq the above image, playfully presenting it as a mystery. It's a mystery we're happy to solve: the screenshot looks just like a redrawn version of the original game, the First Star logo and copyright info suggests this new thing is based on the same content, and developer Robots & Pencils(whose logo also appears in the teaser image) identifies itself as an iPhone and iPad developer.
Put all that together, and you have a Spy vs. Spy remake for iOS. Which, if we can remotely plant traps for our friends (in the game!) sounds pretty great.

Even though 87 per cent use the service.
Apple revealed its Siri virtual assistant service in October at the iPhone 4S launch, and while 87 per cent of customers use the platform at least once each month, just over half are happy with what it has to offer, according to Parks Associates.
Siri was something of a game changer for Apple which put it ahead of rivals that don't have similar tech, though it seems that there is room for improvement.
The report says making everyday requests such as calls and sending texts are the most common tasks made via Siri, while over one-third neglect voice-activated services such as setting alarms, tracing locations and setting reminders.
Although Siri can understand native speak, users complained about needing complete silence for the service to function properly, while other says the platform can't understand accents.

March 27th, 2012, 23:04 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft was forced to apologise after staff in a Microsoft retail store in Santa Clara denied that an Android phone had beaten Windows Phone in a 'Smoked by Windows Phone' marketing event.
The software giant has been running a marketing campaign in retail locations in the US in which store staff challenge owners of Android smartphones to look up information with the chance to win US$100 if successful.
However one Microsoft store upped the ante and also put up a $1000 laptop up for grabs. Skattertech's Sahas Katter headed to the store to challenge Microsoft, armed with a Galaxy Nexus and Android 4.0 but despite winning the challenge, store staff declared that he had lost "just because".
Describing the event on his site, Katter revealed how he had placed weather widgets on his home screen and disabled the unlock screen. Thus when the challenge was delivered to display the weather in two cities, a triumphant Katter simply pressed the power button on his Galaxy Nexus and said "Done!".
"After trying to push for a real answer since I clearly won the contest by their rules, another Microsoft Store employee (possibly a manager) came by after noticing me asking more questions," Katter said.
"Thinking on his feet, he quickly gave a ridiculous out-of-thin-air reason that I need to display the weather of different cities in different states and that “my phone could not do thatâ€."
Microsoft manager Ben Rudolph later tweeted: "I want to make things right. So I've got a laptop & phone (& apology) for you."
The Verge later discovered that Microsoft's marketing campaign was 'tweaked' with techniques for tailoring the challenge "appropriate to your customer" which in this case means avoiding challenges that would result in a loss to certain models of Android phone.
"You should also steer clear of this challenge against an HTC Status (i.e. the Facebook Phone) as it also has a built in pocket-to-picture-to-post feature," Microsoft reportedly told store staff.

'Play' sits between Maps and YouTube
The most visited website in the western world now offers a one-click portal to the Android app store, in a new attempt by Google to bolster its mobile games business.
Weeks after Google rebranded the Android app store – it now exists within a consolidated media hub called Google Play – the search engine giant has added smartphone game access to the google.com front page.
A redesigned tab bar spread across the lid of the home page also features links to other popular Google destinations, such as image search, maps and YouTube.
Google Play combines several other entertainment services into its online network, such as books, music and movies.
The service is elementally Google’s fully-branded alternative to iTunes, accessible to most existing Android devices. It provides chart data on bestselling apps and games, as well as recommended content.

Developers take note: iPad is about to get an even bigger audience
A Wi-Fi version of Apple's new iPad has finally been cleared for sale in mainland China, according to a report by AllThingsD. The China Quality Certification Center has granted the model the Complusory Certification needed in the region. This follows Apple CEO Tim Cook's visit to China to work with partners and government officials.
The company hasn't announced the launch date for the new iPad in China yet, but the market is Apple's second largest in the world. According to 2011 IDC estimates, the iPad holds a 70 percent market share for tablets in the region.
Apple is still fighting a legal battle with Chinese tech company Proview over the iPad trademark. Hejun Vanguard Group, a consultant for Proview's creditors, said it's willing to pursue the case for "five, ten years or even longer."
"We will see how long the biggest company in the world can exploit the law and intellectual property rights in China," it said to Reuters.

Eager to get a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich while you wait for an update on your phone? Then you now have another option to do so relatively cheaply if you don't mind venturing into Coby's bargain bin of tablets. It's begun rolling out no less than six new slates to retail stores today (most of which we saw at CES in January), which pack screens ranging in size from seven to ten inches and each run Android 4.0. Specs are otherwise fairly identical across the board, with each boasting the same single-core 1GHz Cortex A8 processor, microSD card slot, front-facing cameras, HDMI out and either 4GB or 8GB of storage. Unfortunately, they all also come with one key drawback common to budget Android tablets: there's no official access to Google Play. If that's not too much of a deterrent, you can pick these up for between $179 and $279.

We're guessing it's just coincidental timing here, but it looks as if Apple has been granted a patent surrounding "ejectable component assemblies" that are designed to be "flush with the external surfaces of the housings of the devices, despite variations in their manufacture." In other words, a SIM card tray. Granted, there's no specific verbiage in the independent claims of this one letting us know what exact sizewe're talking about, so it's highly unlikely that a patent application filed in December of 2010 (but granted today) would be directly referencing the nano-SIM war that's currently ongoing. That said, the description most certainly sounds like the tray that we've seen throughout the iPhone's life cycle, and if Apple's trying to go small in future handsets, there's a better than average chance that the ejection mechanism will be all too familiar. Legalese lovers can find the usual load down in the source link.

China, Spain and France highlighted as the highest overseas adopters.
Samsung has now shipped five million units of the 5.3 inch Galaxy Note 'phablet' in five months. It hit one million after two months on the market.
The Korean firm says that China, Spain and France contribute the largest share of purchases in its overseas markets, while sales were on the rise in Germany, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Korea was responsible for the majority of the device's success however, accounting for 67 per cent of worldwide shipments.
Last month, Samsung's flagship Galaxy S II phonereached sales of 20 million in ten months so it seems the Note has some catching up to do based on that figure.

While nearly a quarter will go for a reduced iPad 2.
According to Fortune, Baird Equity Research claims 29 per cent of 'tech savvy' consumers around the world plan to buy a new iPad within the next three months, while 22 per cent will favour a discounted iPad 2.
Additionally, 24 per cent of Americans plan to acquire the new Apple tablet, and 15 per cent will go for its predecessor.
48 per cent of existing iPad owners also plan to buy a new iPad, while 35 per cent of that number already possess an iPad 2, which was released just one year ago.
Retina Display was the top reason consumers plan to upgrade with 28 per cent, followed by the quad-core processor at 26 per cent and LTE with 17 per cent.
Interestingly, when the 'tech savvy' bunch were asked whether they understood what LTE – next generation mobile broadband that stands for Long Term Evolution – is, 59 per cent said no, with some answers including 3G tech, Long Telecom Exposure and operator-owned tech.

Tablet leader dismisses customer power complaints.
One week ago, Apple customers complained about the new iPad – or FriPad – overheating so much they that could cook their breakfast on it.
Now, they have also started grumbling about the way the tablet holds its battery charge, claiming it isn't fully charged when it says it is.
However, Apple has bitten back to assure that the new iPad is completely charged before it reaches 100 per cent, though it will discharge slightly at 100 per cent if it remains plugged in, in order to offer optimum power.
Speaking to AllThingsD, Michael Tchao, VP, Apple, says: "That circuitry is designed so you can keep your device plugged in as long as you would like. It’s a great feature that’s always been in iOS."
Tchao goes on to confirm that new iPad users can expect to receive ten hours worth of battery power no matter where the tablet is in the charged/discharge cycle.

News apps account for seven per cent of the top 200 highest grossing apps.
The stats, from research firm Distimo, will be positive news for news giants that hope/pray tablets can become a digital medium they can actually make money from.
Apple launched Newsstand back in October as a new feature for iOS 5. It collects in one place digital versions of magazines and newspapers optimised for iOS devices, and then displays them in one 'Newsstand' icon on the iOS home screen.
The top grossing applications include The Daily, NY Times for iPad and The New Yorker Magazine.
Other key findings from the Distimo Report include:
* The US has been eclipsed by China as the largest market for free apps. During February 2012, daily downloads in the top 300 most popular free apps in China exceeded 1.1m, against 1m for the US

Google unveiled Google Maps 6.5 for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, sporting an updated navigation screen as the firm announced that Maps had provided navigation instructions for trips totaling 50 billion kilometres.
The Google Maps application is formally called Google Maps with Navigation and a great deal of smartphone owners use the application as a personal GPS navigator. So much so that such Maps navigated trips were the equivalent of 130,000 trips to the moon, Google said.
The Navigation feature has always been something of an afterthought but with the new Google Maps 6.5 it seems Google has paid much greater attention to the UI, making is easier to enter destinations and choose from recent locations.
Sadly the new version is limited to devices running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, which still isn't that many devices given how slowly handset manufacturers and mobile operators have been at providing over-the-air updates to Google's latest and greatest mobile OS.
Those that have Android 4.0 will most likely be using a modern superphone such as the Galaxy Nexus. Playing to the crowd, Google also unveiled higher resolution map tiles which made for a "crisper, less cluttered map that is easier to read," Google said.
Maps 6.5 also beefs up support for public transport and allows users to specify their preference for modes of transport including buses and subways. Google recently added London to the list of 475 cities with transit directions and timetables that are available for trip planning in Google Maps.
Google Maps 6.5 is available on Google Play (formerly the Android Marketplace) for Android 4.0+ devices.

Apple has defended the way that the third-generation iPad displays battery charge information following the discovery that the tablet reports the battery full while still charging the battery.
"I noticed that the power meter indicated that the iPad AC charger was still continuing to deliver close to the full 10 watt recharging power long after the screen indicator showed that the battery was 100% charged." said DisplayMate chief Ray Soneira.
Soneira noted that the time the iPad kept charging was over an hour if the tablet was powered off and over two hours if it was powered up. That said, Soneira pointed out that the iPad would keep running for over 10 hours - Apple's stated run-top - if unplugged based on the "100% charged" indicator.
However if allowing the iPad to fully charge, running time was extended to 11.6 hours according to Soneira's testing.
The issue was made less clear by Apple's remark that the iPad battery could be damaged by continuing to charge after the battery indicated it was full, according to an Apple quote on CNBC helpfully dumbed down with a demonstration involving glasses of juice.
Understandably this resulted in a good deal of concern given how easy it is to leave a device connected to a computer overnight and so on. Likely the comment provided to CNBC was either an off-the-cuff remark or, as discussed later, simply misconstrued.
Apple later clarified to AllThingsD: "That circuitry is designed so you can keep your device plugged in as long as you would like," adding that it was a feature "that’s always been in iOS."
In fact it's a feature that's always been in any Lithium-based battery chemistry charging circuit in countless millions of devices well before Apple came to the market. If any device failed to stop charging such batteries then the result would be dangerous over heating and fires.
To look at Apple's initial remark another way, it is actually true that charging lithium-chemistry batteries completely actually does somewhat reduce the life time of the battery in the long run.
Notebook manufacturers have had various ways of dealing with this including only charging to ninety something per cent, while informing the user of that, or offering the user the choice in battery management software such as Lenovo's ThinkVantage Power Manager.
It seems Apple's strategy is to charge the battery fully if plugged in, but tell the user the battery is fully charged somewhat near the optimum 90 per cent mark. Armed with this knowledge, third-generation iPad owners can make their own decision.
If they want the longest running time, leave the device plugged in. If they want the lowest long-term degradation of the battery then it's better to unplug it when the indicator shows full.

Australia's competition regulator will today take iconic technology giant Apple to court for advertising its new iPad tablet as featuring '4G' speeds — which are not supported on Australian telecommunications networks. One of the key features of the new iPad is support for 4G speeds, however, the 4G speeds which the new iPad supports will not be available in Australia, with Apple's technical specifications page only listing it as supporting the 700Mhz and 2100Mhz spectrum bands, neither of which are being used by Australian telcos to provide 4G services. The case may be a bit shaky, though, as Apple does state in the fine print: '4G LTE is supported only on AT&T and Verizon networks in the US; and on Bell, Rogers and Telus networks in Canada. Data plans sold separately. See your carrier for details.

Temple Run, Imangi Studios' running game that has been downloaded more than 45 million times on iOS, is now available for Android.
The Washington-based studio confirms in a press release thatTemple Run is available now as a free download from Google Play, the new name for Google's download store following a thorough rebranding of its online services including Android Market.
First released for iOS last August as a paid download, Imangi made the game free to play, supported by microtransactions, and revenues rose fivefold as a result. Like many App Store successes it has been a target of cloners; the strikingly similar Temple Jump, developed by Anton Sinelnkov, creator of the likes of Plant Vs Zombie and Angry Ninja Birds, was pulled by Apple last month.

Survey finds that the average household has 1.6 Apple devices
[h=3]Apple[/h]Established in 1976, Apple is a multinational corporation (corporate headquarters based in California)...
www.apple.com
Apple's new iPad is off to a red hot start and it's yet another sign of people's insatiable desire for Apple products. According to CNBC's All-America Economic survey, 51 percent of US households now own at least one Apple device - that's 55 million homes which may have an iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, Mac or Macbook.
While the average household has 1.6 Apple devices, the survey noted that most Americans who own one Apple product tend to own three, and almost one-quarter of those surveyed plan to buy one more Apple device in the next year. It's a testament to the brand loyalty that Apple has generated.
"It's a fantastic business model - the more of our products you own, the more likely you are to buy more," said Jay Campbell, vice president of Hart Research Associates, which conducted the CNBC survey along with Bill McInturff. "Planned obsolescence has always been a part of the technology industries sales model, but Apple has taken it to a whole new level."

It hasn't made its official open-source debut yet, but Android 4.0.4 should be hitting the repositories very soon. Leaks of the next Ice Cream sandwich update have been circulating since early February, and Moto's Xoom was given the first taste today. Now Jean-Baptiste Queru, an engineer on the mobile OS, has posted over at the Android Open Source Project forums to let us know that the appropriate files are being pushed as we speak. Of course, this doesn't mean that 4.0.4 will hit your handset any time soon... or ever, for that matter. But, it does mean that more custom ROM devs will be incorporating its pile of bug fixes into their products. Watch the source links to be alerted the moment it goes live.

A free-to-play version of The Dark Meadow, titled Dark Meadow: The Pact, will be available for download on Apple's App Store later tonight, bringing with it a slew of additions to both versions of the game. Dark Meadow: The Pact is identical to the original, save for the fact that it doesn't include any of the "premium" upgrades or content additions also coming to the original version tonight. paying players receive a "Premium Pack" of in-game goodies, which includes five health kits, 13 bombs, 15,000 gold, 150 Sun coins, and a distinct lack of advertisements.
Said premium upgrades and additions coming to both versions include iPad 3 Retina Display support, new environments, enemies and bosses, new weapons and amulets, a "Fast Travel" system for moving between floors, a world map, and perhaps most importantly of all, health packs that can be used during combat.
An Android version of Dark Meadow: The Pact is scheduled to launch some time in April, optimized for the Intel Tegra 3 processor with "enhanced visuals and physics."
Update: We have been informed that the gameplay additions originally reported as only coming to The Dark Meadow are also coming to Dark Meadow: The Pact and have updated the post to reflect this new information.

Some of you have noticed that we don't cover Android games as often as iPhone games on this site. We've definitely noticed that you've noticed. But the lack of Android games on this site isn't for lack of will or some sort of bias - I myself own a lovely HTC Desire HD. There just aren't as many good Android exclusives. The new, promising titles I find on the Google Play store (née Android Marketplace) are very often reheated ports from iPhone games that were popular last year.Things are getting better, and quickly - Google's marketplace refurb is a massive improvement on the atrocity that haunted us for most of last year, and the company seems to be taking a keener interest in curating its offerings too. But there still remains something of an imbalance. There are multiple reasons for this, none of which are that Eurogamer hates Android phones and the people who use them. The first problem is that iPhone is, unfortunately, really pretty cool. At least, so it is seen among developers and the mainstream press. While Android may have gobbled up a vast share of the marketplace by allowing any number of handset manufacturers to adopt it, the very fact that it is on multiple platforms makes it harder for Google to articulate the sort of convincing brand allure that makes Apple's products synonymous with technological lust. Another World, one of the many games to hit both Android and iOS.
Personally, I find Apple products and the entire circus surrounding them somewhat irksome, and I have cultivated a maniacal, possibly irrational loathing for the company's stance as arbiters of both taste and morality (remember Jobs' "freedom from porn" gaff?). Nonetheless, it's been a pretty effective strategy: the kids love iPhones. The newspapers love iPhones. Meanwhile, by virtue of Android's ubiquity and translucency as an operating system, most people who have an Android device probably don't even know it. Ubiquity, it turns out, is just not terribly sexy. But devs aren't simply fickle followers of fashion - there are real development challenges when it comes to Android, too. Apple may release a new device each year, the requirements may change slightly, and devs may have to reissue their software with greater resolutions if they want to take advantage of new technology. But that's nothing compared to the slew of handsets that Android developers have to deal with, says Andrew Smith of Spilt Milk Studios, co-creator, along with Nicoll Hunt, of the ace cross-platform title Hard Lines."I don't know how many new devices enter into the Android market every year - probably 50 or something ridiculous like that," he says. "From a development point of view, the scope of your project to cover all those screen resolutions, different processor powers and aspect ratios of the screen - it's a complete nightmare. So while it's open and free and cheaper to develop for Android, it's a lot more complicated."By cheaper, Smith means the SDK and hardware - the cut Android and Apple take of your profits is much the same. But how you choose to deal with the plethora of screen resolutions can easily rack up the development overheads for Android."We employ a company called Jackal to do our ports and we do a profit-share with them," explains Smith. "I look at whatever share we make as money that's been made through a route I otherwise wouldn't have been able to pursue, simply due to having to focus with small teams."It's a thorny issue even for large developers like Aplix, the makers of Zeemote, an analogue controller for Android that resembles the Wii nunchuk."We've developed a Quickstart App to deal with some of the fragmentation problems," says Paul Su, senior director of research and development. "We try a bunch of different connection methods behind the scenes so it's all automatic for the user."That's not a great choice for a small studio: divide your profits, develop bespoke software or spend ages porting the game to a gazillion different Android handsets yourself. It's why so many games arrive late on Android or not at all. And when they do get there, how easy is it for them to turn a buck? For a long while Android's marketplace was an impenetrable bog, wont to suck great games into its bubbling slop, never to be seen again. This was, in part due to an awkward interface that made it difficult to find good games, but also some missteps in policy too."They had some issues originally trying to deal with piracy and their return policy," says Su. "You could get a game, play it for a while, then you return it for a full refund." Obviously this wasn't such great news for prospective Android developers.Su points out that this has all improved a great deal - the returns policy has been amended and the marketplace is no longer a blasphemy against UX design. Android's curation is enthusiastic, too, and the content is given the best opportunity to shine with videos and user reviews and reports on the latest updates. But it will still take a while for the stigma to dissipate among developers, and then a further while for their games to appear in great numbers. Payment hiccups, of the kind reported earlier this month, don't help confidence. Also, while Android's editors and algorithms do a great job of picking out high-ranked apps, there's still no obvious avenue for devs with zero cache to make their game visible on the marketplace. And then there's the issue of which marketplace you're talking about: "With iOS you have just Apple to go to - one conduit to push your game," says Smith. "That's the best way of getting your game noticed and interest built. With Android, who do you go to? There's Google's marketplace, and Sony has one for the Xperia Play and Nokia has Ovi. You try to hit them all, but that's obviously going to take more time."It's not an easy nut to crack either. As Smith points out, one of the strengths of Android is that multiple platform holders can use it, so a degree of fragmentation is unavoidable. The best thing Google can do is address the developer's concerns - and most of the time that means simple tools and more support. Hard Lines made the jump from iOS to Android, but it's a jump that can prove costly.
There are advantages to Android development though. Aside from the relatively cheap hardware, the fact that Android is such an open platform allows for much quicker iteration. "I can release an update and it'll be out in an hour rather than days - that's fantastic," says Smith.Android's relative openness is the reason that Zeemote is able to exist at all: "[We target Android] mainly because of Apple's policy about Bluetooth and what controllers they allow on iOS," says Su. "We are working on that and we hope to be on iOS soon. But right now Android has a very open marketplace and large installed base.""And there's probably more space on Android for the kind of community building that you see in PC indie games, compared to iOS," says Smith. "I've found it quite difficult, despite being fairly media friendly, to engage with fans in any meaningful way, but I'm pretty sure Android's open enough that you can find solutions."So, it's not all bleak. The Google Play store will no doubt improve further, tools may be released that ease the burden of porting, and devs may be lured in by Android's low hardware costs as the lustre of Apple's technology fades. But until that time, we'll do our best to cover what's new and interesting on the platform - and you can always let us knowwhat great Android games we should be talking about. If that doesn't satiate your appetites, perhaps try to think of each iPhone App of the Day as a preview of the great Android games you'll be playing in six months time. Small consolation, I know - I own one, too.

And a quarter plan to invest in more in the next year.
Apple is the tablet leader and it also has a firm grasp in the smartphone, PC, and music world too, particularly in the US, according to findings from CNBC.
Over 55 million American homes have at least one iPhone, iPad, iPod and Mac, while one in ten that are absent from the group plan to join it within the year.
The average household has 1.6 Apple devices and almost one-quarter are set to buy at least one more in the next year.
Meanwhile, Apple buyers are mostly young male college graduates. Money is also a factor, with 28 per cent of those earning under $30,000 a year owning an Apple device, compared to 77 per cent for those pocketing over $75,000.
Jay Campbell, a VP of Hart Research Associates, says: "It's a fantastic business model — the more of our products you own, the more likely you are to buy more. Planned obsolescence has always been a part of the technology industries sales model, but Apple has taken it to a whole new level."

Set to launch Lumia 800C with China Telecom from April, 610 from second quarter.
This is a pretty big deal for Nokia, which needs to get a foothold in the world's biggest mobile market - and one which is rapidly turning towards smartphones.
Fact is, Android is already very popular in China, while the launch of iPhone caused riots. Meanwhile local OEMs like ZTE and Huawei also have serios designs on the market.
And just a few days ago app analytics firm Flurry said China leads the world for Android and iOS smartphone and tablet activations with 24 per cent of the market.
Nokia will be hoping the pull of Windows can help it grab consumer attention. It will sell the Lumia for 3,599 yuan, or about $570.

After the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) won a battle with Apple after alleging the Cupertino-based company was misleading customers about its third-generation iPad, authorities in other countries are now assessing the compatibility of the new iPad with local 4G LTE networks to see if their customers should deserve refunds too. The UK's Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) confirmed on Tuesday that it is investigating complaints of Apple's misleading '4G' claim, while Sweden and Denmark are also reportedly considering investigations, after agencies within both countries received 'several complaints' from customers about 4G connectivity. Even though these countries carry broad LTE coverage, the new iPad isn't supported on any of those networks.

First, lets get the short list out of the way. If you're not the proud owner of a Transformer Prime,Transformer, Xoom, XYBoard 10.1, Thrive, Iconia or G-Slate then chances are Hulu Plus coming to Honeycomb and ICS slates doesn't do you much good. (Hopefully Hulu will get the app ready for Samsung's bottomless well of tablets soon.) Then again, maybe this is one more reason to consider picking up the Google-powered devices. The newly tablet-friendly app comes with an appropriate redesign, including large tiles and show pages packed with info and options. Content is organized into individually scrollable horizontal "trays" that make navigating clips and shows simple, without a lot of jumping back and forth between separate menus and pages. There's even long press shortcuts -- simply tap and hold on a show's icon and the next episode will automatically play. To see it in action check out the quick video after the break, then head over to the Google Play store to download it yourself.

Quite a few folks have seen many of the apps they paid cold, hard cash for have disappeared from their list of purchases after Google rebranded Android Market as the Play Store. We haven't had the problem ourselves, but according to a litany of posts on the XDA-Developers forums, there are plenty of you out there who have. In addition to disappearing from the list of purchases, the afflicted apps apparently give users an error message when attempting to access them directly. Rest assured, the folks in Mountain View are aware of the problem and are "looking into the issue" according to the company's Known Issues page -- though curiously it's filed it under "Recently Fixed" despite its ongoing nature. So, what say you, dear readers, has Google gotten a handle on this latest glitch, or are you still without access to your precious paid apps? Sound off in the comments below.

"Siri, turn on the flash and take three pictures with my camera after waiting two seconds." Apple'sintelligent voice control system has been wildly popular amongst consumers in the U.S., and abroad, but Siri could be making her way to other devices in the future, including iPods, cameras and other consumer electronics. "Okay, Rock God, I will take your picture in two, one..." A patent by Apple filed in 2010 but published today describes a scenario in which you could control a secondary electronic device using your voice, with all of the backend processing passing through a connected smartphone or computer. According to the patent:One embodiment may include a first electronic device communicatively coupled to a server and to a second electronic device. The second electronic device may be a portable electronic device, such as a digital media player, that includes a voice user interface. The second electronic device may be capable of accurate speech recognition, but may not include additional computation hardware and/or software for training the speech recognition engine. As such, the bulk, weigh, and cost for manufacturing the second electronic device may be reduced, resulting in a more portable and affordable product.
In other words, you could have Siri-like control of virtually any device, with all of the required hardware and software residing on an iPhone or MacBook, linked with other devices over WiFi or Bluetooth. Voice control wouldn't be practical in all situations, but it could be enormously helpful for certain operations, like adjusting settings or reviewing images. Instead of scrolling through hundreds of images, you could simply say "Siri, show me pictures from last Thursday," and see exactly the shots you were searching for. As always, this is one of thousands of Apple patents, and it quite possibly may never come to fruition as described. But here's to hoping it will. "Siri, show our readers the patent application" -- you'll find it at the source link below.
Update: Well, it looks like we missed the mark a little bit here, as this is a patent application, not a granted patent. It's for a voice control system where a device receives voice commands and turns them into text using a speech-recognition algorithm received from a remote server -- which sounds an awful lot like Siri.

As any Opera loving Android user will tell you, good things come tothose who wait -- and folks waiting for the latest version of Opera Mini to hit their devices can now relax. It's here. Like its predecessors, Opera Mini 7 promises to slash your device's data usage and speed up its browsing by compressing data on a proxy server, pushing a lightweight, reformatted page to your device. Mini 7 continues this tradition, of course, but also lets users add more favorites to their Opera home screen, upping the max from nine to "as many Speed Dial buttons as you'll ever want." Read on for the app's official press release, or hit up the source link below for its Google Play page.

Here's some good news for those of you in Bulgaria, Iceland and a handful of other countries: the Windows Phone Marketplace has just arrived at your doorstep. Microsoft heralded its arrival in a blog post today, enumerating a grand total of 13 new markets: Bulgaria, Costa Rica, Croatia, Estonia, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey, Ukraine, and Venezuela. Today's announcement comes just a few months after the Marketplace launched in Argentina, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Peru and the Philippines, expanding Windows Phone's global coverage to a total of 54 countries. If you live in one of these newly minted markets, you can find out how to configure your handset at the links below. Some developers may be befuddled as to why the App Hub hasn't been expanding as fast as the Marketplace, but according to Microsoft's Todd Brix, the delay can largely be attributed to regulatory red tape. Fortunately, though, the company's global publisher program will allow devs to create apps for countries where the Marketplace isn't yet available. For more details, check out the coverage links below.

If you've been putting Evernote through its paces on your Android device, a new update adds a few more bells and whistles. First, the outfit has integrated speech-to-text transcription to go alongside its existing audio notes feature. Don't worry, the original audio is also attached to each note and the new tool can be disabled for sound-only reminders. This feature only works with Android 4.0 tech and "certain other devices" though.
Are those standard widgets just not doing the trick? An update to the Evernote Widget app should do the trick. Now, you can customize color, buttons and exactly which notes appear in the large widget. There's also a single function widget that rests on the home screen just like a regular ol' app icon does. Finally, a new Quick Snapshot function enables blazing fast captures that are added to your account and automatically titled. Catch all that? Good. Hit the source link below for all the details before hoping over to Google Play to download the goods.
