Very soon ZodTTD.com applications such as snes4iphone, gpSPhone, OpenTTD.app, and psx4iphone will be receiving updates to fully support firmware 1.1.3 change to using the ‘mobile’ user instead of ‘root’. There is however a quick fix for those who want these and other applications to work with 1.1.3. You must chmod (set permissions) to 777 to the /var/root/Library/Preferences/ directory and also chmod 777 the directories used for external files such as ROMs, usually somewhere within /var/root/Media/.
More news to come shortly. Thanks for the continued support everyone!

It turns out that 17-year-olds probably aren't that good at studying electrical interference -- and its effect on pacemakers -- created by iPods. Unlike the data presented to the Heart Rhythm Society last year by a high-school student, which demonstrated the music player's ability to interfere with heart-regulating devices, the FDA now says that the gadgets are completely safe for use. Researchers measured magnetic fields produced by four different models of Apple's ubiquitous device, and found no reason why your grandmother can't keep jamming to her South of Heaven reissue. Said FDA researcher Howard Bassen, "Based on the observations of our in-vitro study we conclude that no interference effects can occur in pacemakers exposed to the iPods we tested." We hope the FDA will follow this up with a definitive study on the effects of boomboxes on hip implants.

Some iPod classic owners who installed the recently released 1.1 firmware are reporting that their iPods are sending electrical pulses through the headphone jack and docking port, even when the units are turned off. The pulses, estimated to be 500mv worth of DC, may be enough to damage equipment that is plugged in.
Elsewhere, audiophiles on the Head-Fi forums are complaining that the update brought "hiss" and "static" to the classic, and others say that the firmware froze their iPods or restored them inadvertently. (Note: We have not noticed any irregularities like this after extended use with our own updated classic.)
So what's the reason behind all this? Is El Jobso trying to control our minds with hypnotic pulses again? Make us switch to the iPhone? Per usual, Apple does not have any response to the matter. If a new firmware update comes soon, well, that's probably as good a confirmation as we're ever gonna get.

Not like Windows Mobile 6.1 is an elaborate mystery or anything -- heck, we even know all about the improvements it's slated to bring -- but there's nothing like a bucketful of screenshots surrounded by machine translated opinions to really revive that enthusiasm. Sure enough, the folks over at PocketPT were able get ahold of the software and show off just how it handled webpage zooming, threaded SMS conversations and Office 2007 documents

We though we'd seen it all when it came to creative device destruction -- iPod with a bullet: check, exploding laptops: check, everything in a blender: double check -- but we've never seen anything spend over an hour on the highway and survive. Yet that's exactly what Mike Beauchamp's iPhone did after he left it on his trunk and drove off from a gas station -- and the kicker is that just as he was about to run out and grab it, he watched it get run over by a semi truck. Shockingly, the unit still work perfectly, even receiving a call as Mike finally nabbed it. Obviously, it's missing a few chunks and there are some broken pixels, but the touch sensitivity is solid, and it sounds like Mike's been talking to Apple PR about using it in a promo -- how's that for random luck?

While getting a laptop with an SSD inside is still ridiculously expensive, it won't be that way for long. That's because the price of flash memory is plummeting, with it dropping 75% in the last 5 months alone. In fact, 1GB chipsets are selling for as low as $2.23, with 4GB chipsets going for as low as $12.30.
What's that mean for you and me? Well, it means that a, say, 32GB iPhone isn't too far off, and that the days of platter hard drives in computers are numbered. If the trend of dropping prices continues, within a couple more years they'll be nearing the low prices of HDDs we're seeing now, and we'll all enjoy faster, more reliable, more energy efficient storage in all of our devices. Until then, you're still gonna have to do what you've been doing: wait.

urlclip: Create URL webclips from the commandline.
Release notes:
Erica Sadun | 10:29 am | January 30, 2008 | Test Requests, Update, Utilities, iPod touch, iPhone
On request, here’s urlclip. It’s just like teleclip but is not dedicated to creating telephone-based webclips. Instead it is a general tool that allows you to use any iPhone-legal URL, including http:, tel: itms: and so forth.
Like teleclip, it takes two arguments–the name of the clip and the URL. It then builds a WebClip using an incredibly boring white icon–feel free to swap that out for a better one.
It’s now in the individual Erica Utilities folder and I’ll tuck it into a new EU zip sometime soon.

My new utility teleclip takes two arguments: a name and a phone number. It creates and loads a new webclip using those arguments, e.g. teleclip “Steve Jobs†“408-555-1212?. When tapped, the webclip launches Safari and asks whether you want to continue making the call. I’ve put the utility into the Erica Utilities folder but it’s not yet part of the general distribution.

Erica is abadoning the work of following of her programs:
I am abandoning work on the following software:
Widgets. It was always a proof of concept and never meant to be anything more. If anyone else wants to pick up work on it, feel free
iPhone Utilities. The iPod touch now has Mail, Maps, Notes, etc. There’s no good reason to maintain a second package. I’ve merged this with Erica Utilities.
Listen. RIP. I loved this program.
PDF Viewer. There is a far better version out there now.
XLaunch. Wiggly jiggly icons make XLaunch unnecessary.
Diagnostics. Again, a proof of concept.
Open URL. WebClips make this an unnecessary utility.
Push2Talk. There is a perfectly good SIP client available now.

Ste, a maintainer of one of the biggest iPhone repro's posted this on his page:
Alert - Please Read - Very Important - Pass This On
The release of the 1.1.3 firmware has caused a ton of headaches for developers and package maintainers. Many packages store media and preferences under /var/root/Media and /var/root/Library. With the release of 1.1.3, most packages will now need to store that stuff under /var/mobile/Media and /var/mobile/Library.
For developers, they have to write their apps to be firmware version aware, so that they can read/write from the correct location, depending on what firmware they are running on. For packagers, we have to install/uninstall that stuff from the right place, depending on the firmware. It’s a nightmare.
Nullriver has released the full 3.0 version - no beta any more - of Installer.app. This release allows packagers to install the stuff mentioned above into ~/Media and ~/Library and Installer.app will put it in the right place, based on the firmware of the device.
This version of Installer.app also provides packagers with the ability to check how much free space is available, before installing, so that we don’t fill up the root partition any more. It also adds features that will help in migrating applications out of /Applications to other locations. There is more - this release is really chock full of stuff to make life easier for all of us.
It is imperative that you upgrade to Installer.app 3.0 as soon as possible. By that, I mean NOW. Right now, today. I am going to start releasing package updates today that will rely on the new features. They will not install correctly on older releases of Installer.app. If you run into any trouble and find you need to manually download and install Installer.app, get it from here ( http://repository.apptapp.com/packag.../Installer.zip ), which always points to the latest version. Other repositories will start using these new features shortly, too, so it really is in your best interest to upgrade right this minute. If you do not, and you have an issue installing any of my packages, my response will be “please upgrade, try again, and only come back if you still have a problemâ€.
To prevent this kind of chicken-and-egg issue in the future, one new feature in this release is the ability for the package maintainer to specify a minimum Installer.app version required for the package to install. Unfortunately, this time, we can’t really use it, because the older Installer.apps don’t understand that feature.
For a full listing of changes in this release of Installer.app, please see the “Featured†page in your current Installer.app.

Converter is a units converter for iPhone coded by Vladimir Kofman.
Changes:
- Now storing "recently used" units. So it's much easier to work with long lists (like currencies). Currently the value is hardcoded (but will be configurable in the future versions).
- Localization support. Now the application can be easily translated (I've started with Russian and Hebrew).
- Numerous ui enhancements and bug fixes.
- For those upgrading to 1.1.3 - the application seems to work just fine.

This is a repackaging, for the iPhone Installer.app program, of this ( http://pxl.ibrickr.com/OpenSSH-4.6p1.pxl ) binary package for a different iPhone application installer program. St also tweaked it a tiny bit.
Release notes:
I replaced the com.openssh.sshd.plist file with the one from my Mac. I also added the sshd-keygen-wrapper file from my Mac. What this means is that ssh will properly start up and shutdown now and ssh can easily be enabled/disabled. The reboot of your iPhone during the upgrade to this version should be the last time it’s needed and that requirement will go away with the next version. For folks doing a new install of this package: the host keys are no longer generated during package installation. They will be generated when you first try to ssh into your iPhone. That means that first login will take longer than usual (approximately 30-35 seconds), but after that, login times will be quick.

Following the shock news that the much derided Gizmondo handheld has been bought back from the liquidator for a second attempt at the market, UK trade publication MCV has caught up with new owners, UK tech company Plextek.
Showing something of the lack of industry experience which got the original company in trouble in the first place, asked about competing with DS and PSP its technical director Ian Murphy is quoted as saying:
"It's fair to say that much of DS's content is not exactly spectacular but it's still a very successful machine because it has a point of difference. There's no reason we can't compete. An open platform will offer something that other handhelds can't."
The mention of an open platform is in reference to the company's plan to relaunch Gizmondo - the device itself will remain "almost identical" - as a homebrew system, for which anyone can create, share and sell games within an online live marketplace.
Ironically, the decision to maintain the basic guts of the Gizmondo isn't in-and-of-itself a bad move, though. Despite the collapse of the business, the device was well designed, featuring an Nvidia 3D chip, as well as inbuilt GPS technology. Indeed, Pocket Gamer's own Gizmondo still gets irregular use as a handheld navigation system, even if the quality of the available games (perhaps with the exception of Sticky Balls) was very poor.
The key question, however, is whether this new attempt can enthuse enough homebrew and indie developers into supporting the system, especially when there are plenty of other opportunities such as WiiWare and Xbox Live Arcade, not to mention mobile games.
Still, maybe at this early stage, we should be charitable. After all, the GP2X series of Linux-based handheld consoles seems to have found itself a niche - although not one that has Sony or Nintendo shaking in their boots.

Gelahten released a prototype / beta of his new game "Speed Chaineeze".
Release notes:
Thats first beta release of my game.
The main idea: you need to connect shapes by following simple rules:
Two figures can be connected if they have same color or shape, i.e you can build following chain:
[red square]->[yellow square]->[yellow triangle]->[blue triangle].
You can connect only to underlying or placed on the same line figure, up connects are not allowed.
If you open the chain and do not connect at least 2 figures in it, u'll have the antiscore bonus.
Bonus will executed only if figure which contains it would be linked at least as second in chain.
If you just start chain from bonus figure, bonus will fired up and in future versions this will give you antiscore.
Bonuses:
+ Time bonus - Movement (not time) is stoped for a bit
+ Score bonuses (disabled)
+ Paint bonus - Colors underlying figures like rainbow
+ Path bonus - (looks like 3 diff arrows picture :-) ) - on each figure selection would mark next available for connection figures (bonus works for 10 second)
Free/beta version for now has following limitations/bugs:
+ (BUG ) Time bar do not actually shows remained time (45 seconds anyway for level)
+ (DEMO) You can enter player name and this name is saved through sessions, but highscore table is updated using "DEMO" name
+ (TODO) No rules screen still
+ (DEMO) All bonuses are shown and works except SCORE bonuses (+300, -100 e.t.c., they are shown and animated but there is no score changes)
+ (TODO/DEMO) No in game scroll speed change and there is no different difficulty levels
+ (TODO) There are plenty of bonuses shown for now, thats done for testing purposes and bonus quantity will be reduced
I'm going to implement all missed stuff and probably add/repaint some gfx, hope it would be done soon, 'coz running Photoshop CS 3 on my 1,6 celeron laptop with 256 ram is real war for virtual memory.
I'll be glad to hear all proposals and critique. Sorry for my English
Executable must be unzipped and copied to PPC where it could be runned.

A pre-release version of Nokia's new N-Gage gaming platform is now available for Nokia N81 users. N-Gage First Access lets N81 owners download the pre-release version of the N-Gage application (through which all N-Gage activity takes place) and try and buy select N-Gage games. Other N-Gage compatible devices will be added to the service in due course. Read on for more.
In order to use the N-Gage service you must download the N-Gage application. This is the portal application that allows access to the games and community features. This is a pre-release version and the features of the service are still evolving.
The First Access portion of the N-Gage web site has all the details you need including the download, FAQ and support forums.
Here's what the N-Gage Blog has to say about First Access:
N-Gage First Access allows Nokia N81 owners to download the pre-release version of the N-Gage application, try and buy N-Gage games, and provide feedback on the experience. It’s a great opportunity to be the first to join the new wave of mobile play.
The features available through this pre-release version of the N-Gage application are constantly evolving, so keep in mind that this offering is only the beginning, and our feature set, game catalog and device portfolio will continue to grow in the weeks and months ahead.
We'll be updating this news story with more screen shots and opinion over the next few hours.
In case you're wondering - this version really is limited to the N81. If you try and install the SIS file on another phone it will fail because there is a device check.

Zodttd posted this news:
The Firmware 1.1.3 jailbreak was made public. But not once, instead three different people released three different versions along with different updates to those versions! Whew, a lot has been going on. The issue to developers of iPhone and iPod Touch software is the difference in which user runs the applications we program. In previous firmwares earlier than 1.1.3, we used user ‘root’. And hence we had /var/root/Media and /var/root/Library to store our files and settings in, respectively. Things have changed in 1.1.3:
- Nate True released a version of 1.1.3 that uses the legacy root user for control of running applications. This is great for compatibility, but the firmware had other issues.
- NerveGas released an official dev team release that uses user ‘mobile’ for running applications. But this release had a corrupted installer.
Finally planetbeing made a proper release with following updates, which uses the proper ‘mobile’ user. But there’s some problems I found…
The problem with using the mobile user, is the user of an application has to be aware of the ownership and permissions of directories much more than before.
For instance, gpSPhone v1.5.0 being released today, uses /var/mobile/ if available. But in planetbeing’s release the /var/mobile/Library and /var/mobile/Media directories are often owned by user root.
If root owns either of these directories, settings and savestates can’t be saved since user mobile won’t have write permissions in the “Other groupâ€. So this is all very confusing to some, but there’s a simple fix. Run SSH, login as root, and use the following command to set ownership of this directory recursively:
chown -hR mobile /var/mobile
This command will then fix many issues found when installing applications under 1.1.3 when using the /var/mobile/[…] directory. It only fixes the ownership of the /var/mobile directories that get created as being owned by root. Make sure when creating directories after running this command, such as /var/mobile/Media/ROMs, that you chown this directory to being owned by mobile such as using the command above again. This of course is only required if the directory being created is owned by root.
So I’m working on getting my software working under all three firmware releases, all of which have different issues. What a mess huh?

Zodttd has released a new version of his GBA Emulator for the Apple iPhone:
gpSPhone, the Gameboy Advance emulator, has been updated to v1.5.0. New changes in this release includes:
- Added support for both scaled/unscaled landscape and portrait view settings.
- Added support for firmware 1.1.3’s “mobile†user. gpSPhone should run well on 1.1.3 now.
- Added hardware accelerated scaling for better performance and look.
This release should be very stable and slightly faster. You now have the option between portrait and landscape mode. Hardware scaling gives a smoothed over looking picture, which some may prefer, with the advantage of performance.
A big thanks to Exophase, the author of gpSP, for his continued work on emulation. Without him, gpSPhone couldn’t exist.

Take back control of your device with Pointui Home. No need to fumble for a stylus anymore as Home is designed with generously sized controls.
Release notes:
New Features
* Smartphone support
* PDA's (without phone) support
* Voice mail count is now displayed under the missed call count for those with phone networks supporting this feature.
* Lock screen will fade back to Home screen to allow you to see all of the status information even when device is locked.
* Translation support - see the forums for more information.
* New customise option: can choose digital or analog clock.
* New customise option: Lock Device, Show Home, or Show Home Screen when device is switched on.
* New customise option: automatically switch bluetooth on only during phone calls and switch off at the end of the call (not supported on all devices). The idea behind this is that if you only use bluetooth during phonecalls for headset etc and don't need it on all the time, then this option could be useful to you. It will turn bluetooth on as soon as an incoming/outgoing call is detected, and turn it off when you hang up.
* New customise option: can choose to use Home's comm manager or system default if supported.
* New customise option: can choose to not show screenshots in Currently Running screen (if your device has issues showing the screenshots).
* New customise option: can choose to Show Home, Show Call Summary Screen, or Do Nothing when call is finished.
* New customise option: can choose to use Home's task bar or standard system task bar.
* The list of applications now merges the list of favorites so you can view the entire list together
* Call summary screen added to display who was called and how long call lasted for at end of call.
* Lock screen can now be used on smartphones - you press up then down on dpad.
* You now have an additional option to "Lock Device" on power on.
* Battery saving - now only uses marginally more battery power than normal - smartphone users should notice a big difference (of course this is dependent on how excessive you are with using it).
Changes
* Taskbar in all other standard apps is no longer changed except for the Start button area which still takes you to Home's Task Menu.
* Windows Media icon has been replaced with Favorites.
* Appointments summary shows only the next 7 days of appointments.
* Tasks summary no longer shows completed tasks.
* Force close now returns focus back to Home.
* Ringer volume and profile button on sound screen for non-phone devices are no longer displayed.
* Appointments now display all day events in bold and should not display events that have been completed for the day.
* "Today" and "Tomorrow" in appointments also now show the date after them
* Smartphones no longer have a Windows Mobile section as it's not relevant.
* Shortcut no longer includes "." at start which was causing issues for button mapping.
* Soft key on Today screen no longer overridden. (NOTE: you will need to reset it back to what it was manually if you have a previous version installed).
Bug Fixes
* Many bugs fixed!
* Memory leak issues fixed.
* Lock screen locks keys as well, and when orientation changed while locked the keys remain locked.
* Recurring appointments now displayed.
* Hardware buttons now working.
* Volume controls now working.
* Volume controls support stereo.
* Control panel applets have had a number of bug fixes. They still are only categorised correctly for English ROMS unless you use a translated terms file as described in the forums.
* Battery shouldn't show 255% any more but some devices for some reason do not report the correct % when asked and can take a while before they report it successfully.
* The speed that tasks load has been improved and should no longer cause freezes.
* Currently Running screen causing device to freeze has been fixed on most devices, but still is problematic with some devices in which case you need to switch off the screenshots option.
* Closing home sometimes caused it to freeze needing soft reset issue has been fixed.
Known Issues
* See the forums for more details.

Following on from today's launch of N-Gage First Access, Ewan, in 30 minutes with the N-Gage First Access client gives us his first impressions of the system and a summary of the user experience of the N-Gage client. In the piece Ewan covers installation, game installation and the community features of the client application.
So it’s finally here. After a quiet euthanasia of the N-Gage and N-Gage QD software line, the N-Gage brand was put into hibernation till the time was right. And the time is now right. Or at least almost right. Kind of. Promised to be available since late last year, the all new, next-gen N-Gage client is now available for public testing.
This isn’t the final product, as Nokia are making it clear when you download it from the N-Gage Arena forum. This is a public test of the client, and any points scoring you might do in the client are going to be reset to zero when a v1.00 becomes available. And for now, only the N81 users are going to have access to this. I’m sure there will be howls of protest at this, but given this is still a buggy version (I’ve had a few lock ups and mystery error reports in the first hour of testing), Nokia won’t want to have millions of people hammering the server immediately. Restricting it to N81 users will keep the numbers down to a more manageable size, and make bug replication a bit easier, given the only devices theoretically compatible with it are N81’s.

Out of the rumor mill comes the 16GB iPhone, now official. Ever since the 16GB iPod touch was announced in September, we all knew it was just a matter of time until Apple could bung the same NAND capacity into their chubbier iPhone. The surprise is a new 32GB iPod touch for the same $499. No other changes and certainly not 3G. Both are available immediately.

We were inspired by the energy visualization concepts and the lack of well design device timers to create this high tech system to help individuals take control of their energy usage. Current State is a real-time energy use monitoring system and timer for powered devices combined into one. The Current State system is made up of two parts, a mobile application for you cell phone, which allows you to control and monitor electricity use from anywhere, and a series of Plug-Ends that give you control over the products around your house.
How it Works
1. Order the system online, specifying the number of Plug-Ends needed.
2. Install Current State software on your mobile device.
3. Attach Plug-Ends to powered devices around your house.
4. Sync Plug-Ends to software, giving each powered device a descriptive name and confirming its location within your house.
5. Use Current State to remotely monitor your energy usage, control your devices, and set up automatic timers.

via Games Industry
New data from The Multimedia Research Consultancy shows that more mobile games companies are remaining in business for longer periods of time.
The extensive global survey shows that around 53 per cent of mobile games companies have now been trading for at least five years, with almost 20 per cent lasting more than seven years.
This is despite a slow-down in the number of new entrants into the market - while 2003 saw the single biggest growth in number of businesses with 451 entrants, last year's figure was just 78 in comparison.
While that slow-down, combined with continuing consolidation in the industry, has an effect, the total number of businesses operating was just under 1900 at the end of 2007.
Of that figure the USA has by far and away the most companies by territory, with 322, followed by the UK with 182, China (including Hong Kong) with 140 and South Korea with 134.
In total mobile games companies now trade in 93 countries across the world.
A fuller description of the research results is available on GamesIndustry.biz now.

All you other iPhone knockoff manufacturers out there better take note: the C-002 HiPhone isn't messing around. Not only is this phone built to mimic the iPhone hardware, but the interface is one of the most faithful reproductions we've seen, and even the unboxing experience has been made to scream Apple. In fact, some of the largest differences between this phone and its inspiration are improvements: a removable battery, dual SIM cards and a microSD slot. There's a video after the break -- it's just like falling in love all over again.

That didn't take long. A mere day after the release of Nokia's N-Gage First Access gaming preview exclusively to N81 users, the app has been cracked open to work with any N-series device with enough horsepower. The hack was performed by Nokia regular P@sco, and comes in a convenient downloadable form, or an only slightly involved guide to hacking the app yourself. No rocket science here, and while we're sure Nokia could easily fight back, what we've really got to ask ourselves is why didn't Nokia just open it to everyone in the first place?

In the unlikeliest of unions since Julia and Lyle, we bring you some hot iPhone on N95 symbiotic action. Using the free JoikuSpot application released this morning, you can now turn any S60 smartphone into a WiFi hotspot. Yes, just like WMWifiRouter does for WinMo devices. Sure, the solution doesn't make much sense from locations with tethered Internet and you can't encrypt the http and https (only) traffic. But if you've ever been in a WiFi dead spot and needed to share access (think PSP gaming), this type of solution is pretty unbeatable. Assuming you have an unlimited data plan that is. Click the read link for the video.

Jonz has released a new version of his Nes Emulator for the iPhone:
NES.app lets you play Nintendo games on your iPhone. It is a fully functional, feature-rich Nintendo emulator.
NES.app uses an emulator core we call NESCore, which we've forked from pNESx and InfoNES and re-engineered as a highly-portable and high-performance Nintendo emulator core.
In order to use NES.app, you will need ROM images of Nintendo games. ROM images are files containing the dumped instruction code from a physical cartridge. In many cases, you are legally entitled to posess a ROM imageof any game that you presently own. ROM images for NES are widely available online, or with the appropriate hardware, you can dump them yourself directly from the cartridge.
Features
Multitouch: Use the directional pad + A + B, or other combinations
Landscape Mode: Turn the iPhone counter-clockwise to play in landscape mode
Zapper Tap: Tap objects on the screen to shoot them
Full Screen: Enlarge your NES picture to the max possible
Save State: Save an instant snapshot of your game and come back to it later
Game Genie: Use Game Genie cheat codes
... and many more
NES.app is not iPhoneNES!
NES.app started as a fork of iPhoneNES v0.01, but has been completely rewritten to run very fast, and with many additional features including sound, multitouch support, full-screen, landscape mode, game genie codes, saved games and much more. It now contains zero code from the original iPhoneNES project.
2.0.5 [jonz] Fixed Game Genie code saving

We got a preemptive taste of what something like this might feel like with that banged up impostor-phone, the "Nokia" N94i -- but now things are getting real... ish. According to Microsoft's mobile communications business international marketing director (phew) John Starkweather, Redmond is in talks with the folks from Finland about getting Windows Mobile onto Nokia handsets. "They obviously have significant investments in Symbian but there are a lot of places where we have significant synergies and we would love to see the day where those synergies would extend completely with Windows Mobile," said Starkweather, though he couldn't say when or if any agreement will be met. "We work closely with Nokia and we would love to have them go all the way," Starkweather said. "It's something we talk about all the time." Hold up John, we think before you go all the way, Nokia's gonna want a ring on that finger... do we hear wedding bells?

It's difficult to tell if this is just a little fear-mongering, or cause for real concern, but it looks like there's another iPhone / touch exploit out there lurking on the unseen horizons of those device's browsers. According to reports, a memory exploit -- similar to the previously-patched TIFF exploit -- has been discovered which affects units with firmware 1.0.2 all the way up to 1.1.3, thus carrying over to new 16GB iPhones and 32GB touches. Apparently, all you have to do is browse over to a site containing the malicious code, and it triggers a memory-exhausting script which causes the phone or iPod to crash. At this point, it doesn't appear to be anything more than a nuisance which can be easily circumvented by disabling JavaScript for Safari, though that hardly qualifies as a fix. To date, Apple hasn't issued a patch for the problem, but keep in mind it's only been a known issue since January 24th.

Today's iPhone unlocking / jailbreaking update comes by way of Zibree, who, as you may have heard, announced a new version of AnySIM that unlocks v1.1.3 phones with the baseband 4.03_13_g; be warned, though, bootloader 4.6 won't work, only 3.9. If none of this makes sense to you, we envy the blissful, pain-free life you're not whittling away tracking this stuff.

Nokia opens up pre-release version of forthcoming games platform to N81 owners
Nokia has released information on its N-Gage web site explaining how users of its N81 handset can download the much-awaited N-Gage mobile games platform for beta testing.
The software platform, which will link mobile gamers with multiplayer and social elements in much the same way that Xbox Live does for console gamers, is nearing completion.
The final stage before full-scale deployment to a wider range of Nokia high-end handsets is to increase the user base, a common method used to establish the stability of online multiplayer games.
Currently the precise handsets that are supported for the pre-release software are the Nokia N81 and N 81 8GB, connected via service plans that support GPRS or with access to a wireless network - although Chinese editions of the handset are currently incompatible.
Games available to sample during the beta test include Creatures of the Deep, Space Impact: Kappa Base, Block Breaker Deluxe and System Rush Evolution, with a further 13 titles - including FIFA 08, Brothers in Arms and The Sims: Pets - available after full launch.

Zodttd has released a new Snes emulator for the Apple iPhone:
Heres the release details
Straight from ZodTTD comes the worlds first Super Nintendo (SNES) emulator for the iPhone and iPod Touch!
It’s fast, it has save states, and features landscape and portrait mode! And best of all, it’s now a public release.
TODO:
I am working on implementing the assembly CPU core as well as add sound support, for the next release. Beta testers get ready for a better performing release soon!
From the readme.txt:
Firmwares before 1.1.3 SNES ROMs must go in /var/root/Media/ROMs/SNES/
Firmwares at or above 1.1.3 SNES ROMs must go in /var/mobile/Media/ROMs/SNES/
Also note:
For firmware 1.1.3 users, it is recommended you change ownership of /var/mobile to user mobile by:

2. Run this command
chown -hR mobile /var/mobile
3. Thats it. Enjoy a much more stable and compatible 1.1.3!

An updated version of Garf is out. The game concept is equal to "Simon". Remember a sequence and replay it. The sequence gets extended by one each round - so the things to remember will increase.
Release notes:
Garf version 0.50 should be on Installer at some point in the near future.
Things have obviously gotten bigger in this version...the buttons are elder/child friendly.
Also, there are gaming modes. In addition to "Regular Mode", there is "Reverse Garf" and "AntiGarf". There are no instructions for these modes...you have to figure them out yourself. (But "Reverse Garf" should be self explanatory).
There is also some added support for firmware version 1.1.3, as well as for version 1.0.2. (I'm not totally sure it will work in 1.0.2...someone please let me know if it doesn't).
Update:
Apparently, this version of Garf works fine with version 1.0.2.

With just Jiggy and a browser, you'll be able to write an awesome iPhone application in a matter of minutes. JiggyApps run natively on the iPhone, so there is no messing around with HTML and the limitations of Mobile Safari. At the same time, you don't need a compiler or even a Mac, because JiggyApps are written in JavaScript.
Changes:
UITextField no longer has all the events it had before
- it only has onBecomeFirstResponder, onResignFirstResponder and onShouldInsertText
- the events it inherits from UIResponder are no longer valid
- this means that if, for example, you had code attached to its onTap handler it will no longer work
Added LKAnimation (you can now do flips, page curls and more)
- you can try it all out with the "superanimation" example (and look at the code)
Added UIView.addLayerAnimation
Fixed LKTransform to be initialized to the identity matrix
Added UIClippedImageView (tap events don't seem to work)
UIHardware.statusBarHeight is now a read-write property.
Added global Application object
- change status bar modes
- set badges
- launch other applications, etc.
Added UISegmentedControl
Added UISliderControl
Added UISwitchControl
Added UIProgressIndicator
Added UIProgressBar
Added UIAlertSheet
Added UIImageAndTextTableCell
Added UIPickerView
Added UIPickerTableCell http://groups.google.com/group/jiggy...-release-notes

Tetris and Word Series Poker Pro Challenge arrive for the N-Gage, but the contrast in the feel for the demo versions are huge. Ewan hopes Nokia aren't making a mistake with their promotional strategy.
Two more titles from Nokia today in the N-Gage First Access client - which as you'll recall is officially available for N81 users at the moment - both are classic games in their own right, and like good demos they've helped me make my mind up on whether I want to find out any more about the game.
First up though, is how to get the titles (Tetris from EA, and World Series Poker from Glu), and this is actually so painless, and uncomplicated that you might skip over it. Don't. Through the N-Gage First Access client, you head to ‘the showroom' tab on the far right, and you'll see that the two tiles are listed as new additions. Click on them, and you get the option to try for free. They're downloaded over the air, installed on the handset, added to the games menu, and away you go.

Mr. GEOrge HOTz did it again. He just loosed a world of hurt on AT&T with a software unlock for 1.1.3 iPhones. That's right, the software is said to work on any fresh from the Apple store, shrink-wrapped iPhone sporting the latest 1.1.3 firmware and 4.6 bootloader, something the AnySIM unlock can't do. GeoHot's instructions (and dev / elite team smack talk) posted after the break.
geohot's 1.1.2 software unlock
yes, this is what you have all been waiting for
now fixed to support 1.1.3
1. Download these:
gunlock and the secpack from http://iphonejtag.blogspot.com/ or the blog
the 4.02.13 fls from http://george.zjlotto.com/index.php/baseband/
2. Downgrade your phone to 1.0.2. See all the great tutorials online to do this.
Your baseband won't be downgraded, this is normal.
This will probably work on other versions too, but 1.0.2 doesn't lose wifi on bb access.
3. Kill CommCenter and run "gunlock secpack ICE04.02.13_G.fls"
4. Reload CommCenter. For some reason my phone was in brick mode. Use the elite team bricktool to get out.
5. Enjoy your 1.1.2 OTB unlocked iPhone
Now who'd have thought it'd be this easy
This release is no thanks to elite/dev
I wish they would share like the old days.
I don't believe everyone in the team is like this, but come on guys.
If you want to contribute to me, the person who discovered these exploits and wrote this tool

The trademark application, filed on February 5 and uncovered by Trademork, appears to lend credence to rumors that Apple is going to make a more serious play in the gaming market.
The filed application covers "Toys, games and playthings, namely, hand-held units for playing electronic games; hand-held units for playing video games; stand alone video game machines; electronic games other than those adapted for use with television receivers only; LCD game machines; electronic educational game machines; toys, namely battery-powered computer games."
While the application may be no more than a move by Apple to cover its bases, it can nevertheless be interpreted as a sign that Apple intends to boost its involvement in the gaming space in one form or another, which is hardly a surprise considering the company's success with handheld devices.

Pool for the iPhone is a native Pocket Billiard game to run on Apple iPhone and iPod Touch.
The object of the game is to pocket all colored balls, using as few strokes as possible. The order of pocketing is free. If the cue ball (white) is pocketed, one of the previously pocketed balls is placed back on the table. The number of strokes is shown on the left top corner of the table.
How to make a shot:
First select direction of the shot. Touch the screen and the cue will be directed towards touch position. Then select shot power. Touch on the power selection area (on the right side of the screen) and drag. The number on the top will show the power of the shot (1 to 100). Release your finger from the screen to make a shot. Use Settings page to customize game options.
Manual Installation:
Download here: http://www.adikus.com/Pool.app.zip - Copy contents of the file to /Applications/ folder on your iPhone/iPod. You may need to set file permissions.

This is an implementation of Mahjong solitaire for the iPod touch and iPhone. The aim of the game is to pick matching tiles, removing them from the board. You win when there are no tiles left. You lose when it is impossible to pick up any more tiles. If the application crashes, it counts as a draw. You can only pick up tiles that are not overlapped by another, and can be freely moved either left or right. You probably already know how to play. This is released as Free (as in Freedom) software, under the terms of the GNU GPL Version 2. Graphic design by Sarah Gleeson.

SMSD is an iPhone SMS management application coded by Amrut Joshi.
Release notes:
SMSD supports 1.1.3 firmware from v0.2.3beta1. But there are some issues. Since 1.1.3, apps are executed with less privileges. Because of this, apps cannot start Services. SMSD also has an option to make it a default SMS app. This is a hack which also requires higher privileges. In short, SMSD notifier and SMSD default app options will not stick if you are on 1.1.3. But there is a workaround.
This is how you enable SMSD Notifier and SMSD Default App preferences in 1.1.3. You need to run SMSD using ssh or Term-vt100. Run following command on the commandline :
# /Applications/SMSD.app/SMSD
This will start SMSD on your iPhone. Go to More->Preferences and change the preference you want. Since this is executed with root permissions, these changes will stick.
You need to restart your phone if you change default app preference.

Ste, maintainer of one of the largest iPhone download repo's, has finalized the move to a new server. Package updates are still lacking, but he should catch up later this day.
Quote:
Back on January 19th, I told you that my site was in trouble and was in danger of being shut down. Things went from bad to worse, as the days went on, but I managed to keep the site going, in spite of the problems. Yes, there were troubles with refreshing my site and downloading packages, but while lots of people encountered those issues, just as many didn’t.
Then, Freeit4Less.com and Polar Bear Farm Ltd stepped up to provide me the resources I needed to not only save the site, but make it faster and better than ever. They had the technology. I could rebuild it. (+10 if you get the reference) They each provided me with a dedicated server (no shared hosting, no VPS) and oodles of bandwidth. I have spent the past week setting them up, configuring them, testing them and putting them into service. As of about two and a half hours ago, I finally finished. They are done. Yay!
They are fast. They share the load (via round-robin DNS). Each is capable of carrying 100% of the current traffic, by itself, should the other server go down. (Note: there would be issues (about 50% of refreshes and downloads would fail) because of the down server, but as soon as I knew it was down, and likely to stay that way for more than a few minutes, I would remove its entry from DNS. Within 30 minutes of my doing so, service would be back to normal, and coming entirely from the other server.)
One thing I have noticed, as my site has moved around in the past, is that huge numbers of people refuse to update their Installer.app and Community Sources packages, so that they point to and can use the new location. I have had to accommodate those people by putting redirects on the old sites, that point to the new sites, so that things still work for people. No more. I have gone to all the old servers and deliberately broken their configurations so that they will no longer work. You must upgrade to at least Installer.app 3.0 and Community Sources 3.4, to get access to the new site and to be able to use it. Yes, people paying attention will note that, technically, Installer.app needn’t be at 3.0, but since more and more packages will use features only found in that version, you’d be wise to upgrade to it if you haven’t yet. Additionally, just as I broke my old sites, I may configure the new one to ignore requests from versions of Installer.app that are less than 3.0.
It didn’t make sense to put out package updates while the site was having so many issues. Consequently, there is a huge backlog of them, some of which have been waiting since January 26th. Now that the servers are done, all that’s left to do is get these packages out the door to all of you. It’s late here (nearly midnight), so I am not going to start them tonight. I’m tired and I don’t want to mess them up. So, when I get up in the morning, I’ll start in on them and will work all day and into the evening, if need be, to get them all released. If I run into any problems with a package, I’ll email the developer right away. As soon as we resolve the issue, their package will get done. I apologize to all of them - they have been patiently waiting for me to get to this point. Once caught up, I’ll get back to the daily (or nearly so) updates of the past.
Be sure to check out the sites of my sponsors, please. Between them, they are paying $1,200.00 a month to keep this repository alive. When you are at their sites, check out their products. If you think they might be useful (hell, even if you don’t, heh), buy them. And don’t forget to donate to me, too - I’m still out of work and perilously close to being out of money. Your donations go directly towards keeping a roof over my and my three cats’ heads, and food in our stomachs. Many of the developers, whose apps I host, also take donations. Try to spread a little love their way too, so they keep writing and updating these apps we all love. Every little bit helps, and no amount is too small.
Let the fun recommence!
-ste
UPDATE: I forgot to mention that the URL to the RSS feed for my packages changed. If you were subscribed to it, you should unsubscribe and resubscribe . -ste
UPDATE: There *is* another way that you can help, besides donations, but since I’m not allowed to even talk about it, I’ll leave it as an exercise for the reader to figure out. -ste

Changes:
added support for 1.1.3

Just in case you haven't had your Android fill from this year's Mobile World Congress, the folks from PhoneMag have now let loose a video that shows the much-anticipated OS in action on a working touchscreen phone from E28. As you can see for yourself in the video after the break, the OS is a tad sluggish but not unreasonably so, which is all the more impressive given that it's apparently running without any modifications on some pretty lackluster hardware (a 200MHz OMAP TI 730 chipset and just 64MB RAM and 64MB ROM). Of course, this is just a demo in the truest sense of the word, so there's no indication that you'll actually be able to get your hands on the phone anytime soon.

If you're tired of shelling out laptop prices for your WiFi smartphone browsing, Boingo's got help on the way. At Mobile World Congress the company announced Sony Ericsson and iPhone / iPod touch versions of its connection client software, with the SE version to show up in the second half of the year, and the iPhone software to hit as soon as Boingo can get a hold of the SDK. Boingo already has Nokia and Windows Mobile-compatible versions of its software, but with 6 percent of users attempting to connect to Boingo already rocking an iPhone, it looks like this software can't come soon enough.

We're not yet entirely sure how it works, but iPhone hacker Zibri's just released a new app he's calling ZiPhone, which claims to jailbreak any version iPhone -- including new 1.1.3 phones right out of the box -- without messy downgrades and baseband changes. We haven't tested it ourselves, but prepare for the onslaught of downloaders to take it offline in five... four... three...

The one problem with World of Warcraft (besides all other facets of your life disintegrating like a tomato in time-lapse footage) is that you can't play it on the go (no, this guy doesn't count). Though a new app being spit-balled at Blizzard won't fix that problem, it may just make traveling a tad bit more bearable.
MTV got the scoop during a sit-down with Frank Pearce, co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment, in which he talked about a mobile division working within the company. "I don't think we're looking at it as something like, 'We're going to make mobile games,'" he said. "We want to look at the mobile devices as something we can use to enhance the experience of our existing games." To that end, Pearce mentions the possibility of an app that would let mobile users monitor their auctions or read their in-game mail while on the go.
It's still in the brainstorming stages, but it's probably enough to start getting fans excited. What would you like to see in a WoW mobile app?

ZiPhone allows you to easily software unlock your iPhone. No hardware modification is required.
Release notes:
ZiPhone v2.0 is finally OUT. n the command line version, you will find a new ption "-b" be very careful with that!
I take no responsability if you brick your phone!
ZiPhone -b will downgrade bootloader from 4.6 to 3.9, flash 4.03.13_G baseband version and unlock it (in one shot!).
It worked for me on 2 ootb 1.1.2 phones. It will work on 1.1.3 ootb phones too. Other options are unchanged.
Do not forget to donate! The future of ZiPhone will depend on you also! If you can't code, or contribute in other ways, just donate.
I think we won't need another version till the next firmware release
Namaste!
Peace out.
(To quote my favourite blogger)
Important:
For people who get stuck on apple logo.
Try to use: ZiPhone -v -b
That solved the problem for many people.

SpringDial puts speed dials of your contacts on the SpringBoard of a jailbroken iPhone. The advantage of this is over using the Webclip method is that it is more of a true speed dial. Safari doesn't have to load, and you are not asked to confirm the call. If you happen to have a photo for the contact in your Address Book, then it is what is used as the icon for the contact.
The easiest way to install it is to add the repo http://i.mineshaftgap.net/ http://modmyifone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31597

Ever wanted to misuse your iPhone as piano... soon you will get that chance.
Other notes:
Features are:-
- Multi-touch. Up to five keys playable at once for complex chords.
- Multi-sampled, so each key is a real piano sample.
- Easy change between octaves, and can start at C or F key.
- 4 Octave.
- Animated keys really look like they are being pressed.
Future features MooTheCoo is working on:-
- Stereo 88 key multi-sampled grand piano. This will require finding a sample CD that will legally allow him to do this (!), and using MP3s instead of Wavs (which is pretty tricky on the iPhone at the moment).
- The old 1.1.3 compatability issue. Currently tested on 1.1.1
- Adding some built-in instructions just in case people can't work out how to use it...
- He is Finding some nice repository to host it
The application is still in development but a video can be found here: http://modmyifone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31204

Sorry Gizmondo, your dreams of a resurrected user generated gaming platform were just usurped by Nokia. Straight outta Espoo comes Nokia's Yamake (a mashup for "you make the game") for their N-Gage platform. With it, Nokia says players can "create their own games" from a range of "mini games" by adding user generated text, pictures, sound clips and movies. Games can then be shared via the N-Gage Arena and via MMS between N-Gage compatible S60 devices. The press release specifically mentions the creation of mini games "such as" pictures puzzles and quizzes -- so no, we're not looking at user generated, 3D first person shooters upon initial release. In fact, without any images or video to accompany the press release, Yamake sounds more like a user customization platform than game creation platform. Still, we'll cut them some slack as they get this off the ground. One thing seems pretty clear though, this ain't your mama's sidetalkin' N-Gage; Nokia is playing for keeps this time around.

So there's a rumor floating around the internets concerning AT&T, iPhones, and tethering. The story goes something like this: the word tether is mentioned in an AT&T notice about users upgrading to a new iPhone and being forced into another two-year agreement. Apparently, some folks who've only quickly browsed the document made the mistake of assuming that AT&T used the word "tether" the way we all know it best: computer-to-phone, modem-style tethering. Unfortunately, this is a semantic problem -- what AT&T's talking about is using the dock connector to activate the phone, and sync with your computer... not the other way around. So next time you hear someone talk about AT&T's "tethering" plan feel free to set 'em straight.

Given the bank’s top notch performance during that whole subprime thing, would you trust Citibank’s opinion on anything these days? One of its fancy pants analysts has officially predicted that Apple will release a 3G iPhone sometime in the next six months, citing low inventory of the current model and high demand for a 3G phone in Europe. Said the analyst, “We believe that lack of 3G has been a significant headwind for iPhone in Europe where 3G is already pervasive.â€
Apparently Apple has been telling the bank that it plans to release the 3G iPhone in Europe and Asia before the end of the year. The implication there is that there’s no 3G iPhone in the works for the U.S. this year. Might it have something to do with AT&T’s purchase of all that spectrum?
I’m sorry, but to me, the whole Citibank institution has been to look utterly incompetent these past few months. I wouldn’t put too much credence into what it says.

We've just uploaded iJailBreak 0.5.3 to our Google Code. This version brings a few features from the new ZiPhone version released a short bit ago.
First, the unlock now works on all iPhones - regardless of whether you bought it this afternoon or on June 29. Second, we got some conflicing reports from our PowerPC users regarding iJailBreak working - some said it worked, others said it didn't. This update has re-ensured PowerPC compatibility for those running Tiger or Leopard. If you're running any other version of Mac OS X, iJailBreak will not work.
IMPORTANT: this release does not include iPod Touch support. We're still working on that.

At least that's the only way we can explain the stealth bomber look on this AS-IP300 iPod dock from Kenwood. You can buy a black version to complete the effect, but don't expect to get much out of these 1.9W stereo speakers. The best news is that you're looking at a 95 Euro ($140-ish) pricetag for the unit, which has us rather ambivilant as to if or when this'll be getting a Stateside release.

PacketVideo has a new receiver which can pump mobile TV over good ol' WiFi. PV claims the device will ultimately ship before the year is out in versions supporting over-the-air DVB-H and MediaFLO broadcasting as well as TDtv and WiMAX streaming. Although it's presumably compatible with any WiFi device, they specifically cite support for the the iPhone, N-Series Nokias and HTC devices while demonstrating the device with an iPod touch at Mobile World Congress. The 6.4 x 1.8 x 4-cm block is powered by a lithium-ion battery of unspecified capabilities. Although it's not stated, we assume the received television can be shared with multiple devices over that wireless link -- else why bother with WiFi?

Square Enix's support for mobile platforms is already notable, but games like Before Crisis Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy IV The After could be just the start. Today in Japan, the company announced the formation of Square Enix Mobile Studio, a fully owned subsidiary dedicated to the development and distribution of mobile contents.
Set to open its doors this April in Sapporo, far to the north of its parent company's Tokyo home base, Square Enix Mobile Studios will be headed up by Square Enix's current head of mobile business, Yoichi Haraguchi. The company expects to have 20 employees in its first year.
This announcement coincides with the start of Japanese distribution on Final Fantasy IV The After. Users of DoCoMo's i-Mode service can download the FFIV sequel now. EZmode users will get a chance later this Spring.

Sega of America boss Simon Jeffery told MCV that the firm was very excited to have forged a working relationship with Apple.
“The iPod is arguably the most pervasive cross-demographic piece of consumer electronics today,†said Jeffery. “There are no age or fashion barriers to iPod adoption, and making Sonic available to tens of millions of iPod owners really is a fantastic opportunity for us.
“We don’t have anything to talk about at this time in terms of future projects, but naturally we are thrilled and honoured that Apple chose to partner with Sega.â€
The iPod is currently a closed platform to developers – and Jeffery said Sega was “honoured†to have been picked as a partner by Apple.
“iTunes and Apple's whole banking/payment system is flawless,†he added. “They have to be one of the smartest companies in the world. Being able to buy a game and have it on your iPod with a couple of clicks is just brilliant.â€
When asked whether it saw Apple as an up-and-coming rival to the casually-skewed DS, Nintendo UK told MCV that it didn’t comment on the ‘activities of current or potential competitors’.

It's turning into quite the day for shuffle aficionados. Apple just slash the price on its 1GB iPod shuffle this AM to a very palatable $49, and now the company is pushing a brand new 2GB version out the door for $69. The color selections will be the same as little brother, including a (PRODUCT) RED version. It'll be available later this month.

Open today for public beta after long last, DVD Jon's first, um, "legit" software business venture: doubleTwist Desktop, a Windows-based app intended to help seamlessly organize, transcode, and sync your various media types to devices like the PSP, Kindle, and Symbian S60 and UIQ phones, as well as share online through Facebook. (Apparently a Mac version is due in Q2.) Nary a mention of DRM stripping or the like (just a couple references to "liberating" your iTunes media -- convert it to MP3, stripping the FairPlay DRM), just a whole lot of talk about making your media easy to move between devices and share with friends.

Dr Mark Ollila on the challenges ahead for the Nokia gaming platform
Nokia's N-Gage software gaming platform is out to solve three key issues in the mobile space: "Discovery, ease of use, accessibility."
That's according to Dr Mark Ollila, the company's director of technology and strategy, talking to GamesIndustry.biz on the eve of the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.
"You've got to remember Nokia's DNA, its values, is connecting people," he said. "And what we're doing with gaming, with N-Gage, is connecting people through play."
And he went on to say that the primary benchmark for success will be the number of active users over time in the N-Gage community.
"With the fact that we're shipping a lot of devices a year, and they'll be N-Gage compatible - we have a lot of devices which are already on the market which are N-Gage compatible - I think we've got a great opportunity to actually have higher community penetration."
The N-Gage platform is currently available to N81 users for beta-testing, and will be rolled out to additional handsets over time.

Following a short overview on the state of the N-Gage platform, we had a chance to ask J. Dan Scott – the Global Head of Production for Nokia Game Publishing – a few questions about the platform and the nebulous launch date. First up, Scott said there's no solid release date for the service -- the First Access program is supposed to help iron out any kinks in the admittedly ambitious launch. Launched earlier this month, the First Access program was initially limited to just the Nokia N81 handset, to limit the testing concerns, Scott said. Nevertheless, the internet had other plans, quickly enabling functionality on the N95 handset which, curiously enough, Scott said accounted for more than half of the connections to the service.
Roughly 30K users have downloaded the client to date – far more than the 2K or so Scott anticipated – and those early adopters have purchased "thousands" of games, a conversion rate that also impressed Scott (though he did admit these consumers are particularly passionate about games). The largest challenge: getting out of the mobile industry's "landfill stage" and prove to consumers (and skeptical game bloggers!) that quality gaming is possible on a mobile handset, while proving to third-party publishers that investing in developing quality games can be a lucrative endeavor. Yikes, best of luck!

twenty08 are about the release MobileChat v2.1 this week...
Read on:
We’ll be release MobileChat 2.1 later this week/this weekend. It works fully on 1.1.3.This isn’t a major release, it’s more of a compatibility release with a few fixes and a feature add:
- Works on 1.1.3
- DNS Issue that plagued 1.x and 2.0 has been resolved.
- BSD Subsystem dependency should be gone.
- Added support for XMPP
- Tweaked GTalk settings
- Sign On progress notifications (as seen in screenshots)
- Disconnect Notification: if you get kicked off, or you can’t sign on, you’ll be alerted now
AIM is working fine, the hold up is with XMPP/GTalk. While we resolved the DNS issues that really held both services back during the initial release of 2.0, we’re running into issues with authentication on both services now. We’re exploring the option of upgrading to libpurple 2.3, and have it 95% compiled on the iPhone at this point. Should only be another few days to finish up the port of libpurple to the iPhone and then upgrading the method calls in the application.
I’m sure the AIM users are going to be saying “I don’t care about XMPP, I want it now†however, believe me, a newly compiled libpurple on the iPhone will definitely improve performance.
Stay tuned guys!
Oh, and for those of you who really can’t wait for us to release this later this week, SVN Revision 72 works fine for AIM.

iMapIdle is an iPhone application that simulates "Push Email" with your IMAP server. It's in its early stages but the current features are:
- listens in the background waiting for new IMAP mail even if you are in sleep/standby mode
- notifies you via a popup and/or sound. You choose how to be notified. Sound notification should use the same method your mail client uses (ie: if you have vibrate on, it'll vibrate as well)
- popup notification allows you to choose whether the mail client should check for email right there by forcing the mail client to check the server (it doesn't launch the mail client but just forces it to check the server). NOTE: Don't choose this if you are in the mail client as it will exit (you've been warned). The popup will disappear after 20 seconds and if you miss it the iMapIdle icon will show you how many popup notifications you have missed
- supports SSL connections and special support for GMail IMAP http://iphone.rustyredwagon.com/

READ FIRST
- To 1.1.3 Users
1.1.3 is is not supported yet. So please don't install if you're. It will not work. Why ? well I have only one iPhone(phone and toy as well) I don't want to take the risk of upgrading it to 1.1.3. That's it.
- To 1.1.2 Users
Some advanced/cool features is not working on your phone, such as SMS black list, badge update... Why? same reason as above.
- To 1.0.2 & 1.1.1 users
Congrats, I'm sticky on 1.0.2, so sure it will work without any problems. Also I have the chance to debug my app on my friend's 1.1.1 phone and all features should work also on 1.1.1
- What's new since 1.0 RC1 ?
* A new helper module(dylib) is introduced and by injecting it into the SpringBoard process, iSMS now can take over the default apple SMS application! (Currently only support 1.0.2/1.1.1)
* Simple but True SMS BlackList?, yes it's true! No pop up, no daemon! Message will be deleted silently though.
* New recipient UI. after several days's hard reversing, I finally managed to use the system UI components to display the recipients. More apple-ish Now!
* Save to draft
* Template customization
* Could remove the 1000 message capacity limit.
iSMS 1.0RC1 is not perfect, but it has been tested by 10K chinese iPhoners during the lunar chinese new year. So it should work for most of you. If you have any problems, please submit issue ticket at http://code.google.com/p/weisms/
Last but not least, Thanks for your interesting and please consider donate if you think it's good. With your help, I believe I can make a killer SMS app for you.

Although the MacBook Air's multitouch trackpad is pretty nifty, it looks like Apple has even grander plans in store -- a recent patent filing describes the MBA's current features as "Basic Multitouch" and contains descriptions of "Advanced" touch operations like system control, file management and browser navigation. While the filing details using a combination of the thumb and two fingers to cut, copy and paste -- something that seems awfully relevant to that little iPhone thing Apple sells -- what we're most intrigued by is the description of the "side pinky swipe" to control system functions like volume and screen brightness. Since the side of the pinky produces a different shape than your fingertip on the touch sensor, the system can automatically recognize it, making it ideal for quick adjustments -- we're already dreaming up lists of macros to trigger. Of course, there's no telling if and when we'll ever see this stuff in a product, but it's probably not a coincidence the iPhone, iPod touch, and MacBook Air all use the same Broadcom touch controller -- let's hope those long-awaited new MacBook Pros join the club, eh?

According to man-about-town, Robert X. Cringely, Samsung is readying not one, but two separate Android-based phones, one of which is due in September, with another model following around Christmas. If you believe what you read (and what his tipster says), these phones will not be labeled Samsung, rather they will be released as Google-branded gPhones. The model released in the Fall will be a "higher-end" model which apparently looks "somewhat like a Blackberry Pearl" but with a screen that flips and "a keyboard for texting" (though to be honest, that description makes little sense, as the Pearl has a keyboard). The second device will be a cheaper model (under $100), and will likely be released after the holidays. Of course, right now this is just speculation -- given the large gap of time between now and September, these plans could be completely rearranged or nixed altogether... even if they are accurate.

Brace yourself Gizmondo fans, for it seems that not all of Carl Freer's recent prognostications about the resurrection of the ill-fated handheld are exactly coming to pass. While he apparently is still intent on bringing the handheld back from the dead, he now tells Swedish journalist Hans Sandberg that he was being "too optimistic" with the stated May 2008 launch date, and that it should now be available "by the end of 2008." That deal with Plextek to build the new device apparently is still in place, however, and Freer's "co-pilot" in this latest endeavor, Mikael Ljungman, is reportedly on his way to China this week to check out the manufacturing operations. Needless to say, we'll be keeping you posted on any future developments, or future delays.

Nokia and THQ Wireless Inc. (wholly owned by THQ Inc. (NASDAQ: THQI), a leading publisher of mobile games, announced an agreement to bring Team17's Worms World Party to a range of Nokia devices through the N-Gage games service.
Adam Comiskey - International VP THQ Wireless commented, "Worms has always been a great success on mobile devices and the N-Gage technology has allowed us to produce the most advanced, faithful and visually impressive mobile edition of Worms to date."
"Worms is an excellent fit with the new N-Gage service," added Gregg Sauter, Director of 3rd party publishing, Nokia. "N-Gage is all about fun games that are easy to pick up and hard to put down - which is the Worms experience in a nutshell."
Worms World Party will be massively updated from its original, award-winning N-Gage version and includes vibrant graphics allowing the player to visualize enemy terrain, while retaining all of the functionality in a reduced size. With N-Gage's enhanced 3D gaming capabilities, Worms World Party levels sport a slick new look including the much-loved, hilarious Worm animations. New for this outing is the addition of the zany Worms voice taunts which really bring the game to life.
Worms World Party features six level themes inspired by the best of the Worms series featuring the hot lava fields of hell, the freezing ice caverns, an arid desert, pirate islands, alien space worlds and tribal rock environments. Fans will also enjoy all the classic weapons, including the Super Sheep and the much fabled Holy Hand-Grenade.
On N-Gage Arena, up to four players can compete with one another across the globe with online death-match gaming. Online options will include matchmaking to help easily find people to play, a friends list and a high-score leaderboard.
Worms World Party also takes advantage of the new N-Gage Points feature that rewards skilful players for in-game achievements such as battling enemies and retaining all their Worm crew, or blasting multiple adversary Worms in a single move.

Nokia has finally given a clear statement that there WILL be enhanced versions of N-Gage games for phones with 3D acceleration chips. Phones without the chips will get the same games, but because they use software to generate 3D their graphics will be less snazzy-looking.
No 3D-enhanced games have been released on N-Gage so far, though the original 2006 demo of System Rush Evolution did use the N93 and N95 3D accelerator.
Nokia haven't said which games will receive chip-enhanced versions, or when, but this is the first time they have said directly that there will be two versions of some games. Previously they'd umm-ed and ahh-ed on the topic, possibly concerned about alienating owners of phones without the chip, but it seems they've now made up their minds to go down the two version route.
As older readers may remember, this dual-version approach is how 3D acceleration hardware was first introduced on the PC, with games using the hardware if it was present but managing to do without it if necessary. The N-Gage platform is arguably much closer in spirit to the PC than consoles, because new phone models are being released on a constant basis rather than generational basis. It therefore makes sense to use the PC model when introducing new hardware technology to N-Gage games.
Which N-Gage phones have a 3D accelerator chip?
The following N-Gage phones DO have 3D accelerator chips: Nokia N82, N93, N93i, N95, N95 8GB and N96.
The following N-Gage phones DO NOT have the chips: Nokia N73, N81 and N81 8GB.
Some other Nokia phones do have the chips, but haven't yet been added to the N-Gage platform so we haven't listed them.

Although it hasn't been directly announced as an N-Gage phone, Nokia's official publicity photos show their new N96 model running the Star Wars N-Gage game, and also show dedicated gaming keys similar to those on the N81. Click on this news item to see the photos...
The N96's design is a combination of the N95 and the N81. It has a normal keypad for general use, and a slideout section on the other side that can be used for both multimedia controls and gaming controls.

The folks at ProjectNext have apparently got hold of the promo video for the upcoming exclusive N-Gage game Creebies (a sort of cross between (fluff)Friends and the Sims). As usual we have no confirmation that this is genuine, but it certainly looks authentic, and ProjectNext's previous videos have usually turned out to be the real thing. iPhone cloners: meet your new king. We're not kidding when we say we even tried fake names and disguises at CES to score an early picture of the DaXian X999 you see here, only to be shot down by the eagle-eyed vendors in the International Pavilion -- but it's out now, baby, and never has KIRFdom been so thoroughly rocked. Not only does the hardware ape the iPhone -- 3.2-inch single-touch QVGA screen, dual 2MP cameras, motion and proximity sensors -- the UI is actually a TouchFLO clone running on what is surely an unlicensed copy of Windows Mobile 6.0. That's a hat trick, people -- and to top it all off, the list price is a staggering $369. It's like we don't even have to make the jokes -- except to say that if your love / hate relationship with Apple compels you to buy this thing, you should probably seek therapy. Random dramatic video of the UI in action after the break.

After getting C&D'd by Apple (a special moment in any Apple Developer's life), Ecamm changed the name of their iPhoneDrive product to MegaPhone. Today, I had an early peek at their new product and was delighted to find that it supports the creation of new notes and editing of existing notes on the Macintosh end.
This is great news. Megaphone takes a feature (Notes) that was utterly and completely useless and turns it into a pretty cool way to carry around to-do lists and other text files with you.
And there's even a way to get around the hideous Marker Felt issue: When editing a note, use the Edit > Fonts menu to pick a less eye-bending choice. You're still limited to the standard iPhone choices (Helvetica, Courier, Arial, etc) but you no longer have to deal with the M.F. font.
The new version also adds batch delete for SMS and phone call logs so you can free up some memory if you're running against the iPhone's log limits.
Power user tip: Drag an HTML file into the window with the other notes, and MegaPhone adds it as a new note. The iPhone interprets and displays the HTML properly. I tried it out with one of my 3000-word O'Reilly articles with lots of code and headers and it worked fine (no way to click a link though -- but it will load images and online div sections from the web, according to Ecamm).
There is a demo of MegaPhone available, while a full version will cost you $19.95.

Uh-oh -- it looks like the nasty Windows Home Server bug that corrupts data affects quite a few more apps than Microsoft initially let on. The company's just updated the WHS support note to include reports of data corruption when using iTunes, the Zune software, WinAmp, WMP 11, Photoshop, and a host of other applications -- and the problem's expanded in scope as well, now affecting files saved to the server in addition to files edited on the server. That basically makes WHS useless as of right now -- if you can't trust your data on it, there's no point -- so let's hope there's a fix on the way.

Just when you think you've seen the iPhone perform its last magic trick (making you eggs benedict, solving the inverse Galois problem, a brief appearance on Dancing With the Stars) something like this comes along to make your jaw drop just a little bit more. Touchpad for the iPhone is built on top of VNsea, but instead of allowing you to navigate your desktop on the device, it becomes what is essentially a wireless, remote trackpad, which gives you direct access to your system as if you were using a mouse or touch device for input. It sounds interesting in description, but looks amazing in execution -

We already thought that 4G iPod Bluetooth mod was pretty sweet, but Fstedie has managed to top himself, cramming a BT adapter into a 5G video iPod without altering the stock appearance, apart from that clear third-party faceplate. The basics of the hack are pretty similar -- replace the hard drive with a CF card, wire up a Bluetooth adapter -- but the cramped internals of the 5G case makes it much more difficult to pull off, apparently. If you're feeling brave, instructions are soon to come just beyond the read link.

News from Keripo
As the title hints, this podzilla2 module uses a cross-compiled pi-agm binary to calculates digits of pi. It uses the terminal module to allow for input.
Due to a bug in the terminal module, backspacing will not work (I would link to a trac ticket if trac wasn't down - if you have the time to fix it, a patch would be greatly welcomed). If you make an input mistake, just exit and re-enter the window and re-input things carefully. Once the calculations are done, pi-agm will exit and the calculated values will be saved in a text file located where-ever your current working directory is (e.g. mine saved to "/pi8k.txt").
Here's the readme:

Calculates digits of pi via pi-agm. Uses the terminal module for input.
Saves output to working directory (most likely root "/pi##.txt").
Was able to calculate 8192 digits in 37 seconds (used "8k", "2", "-1").
pi-agm is written by Carey Bloodworth.

Source code downloaded from myownlittleworld.com

To compile pi-agm, extract the original source code, replace the
"${LD} ${LDFLAGS} ${OUT_FILE} .o ${MATH_LIBS}" line of your intended
target in src/Makefile with "${CC} ${LDFLAGS} -o ${OUT_FILE} .o ${MATH_LIBS}"
and compile with "make fft-hartley CC=arm-elf-gcc LDFLAGS=-elf2flt"
(you can replace fft-hartley with whichever type you want). This will give
an unoptimized pi-agm binary that you can run on iPodLinux. I may port this
as a proper podzilla2 module later when I have time.
(Note that when I say "when I have time", it doesn't necessarily mean anytime soon ; P

With the MWC and now GDC events under our belt, Ewan Spence draws from all the clues that Nokia has been dropping and comes up with a connected, converged epiphany into the future of gaming. The unification of smartphone functions, social networking and gaming is just around the corner, perhaps. Personally, I can't see any real showstoppers.
"Contextual games."
"Games that use everything in the phone, including, I suspect, the camera, the GPS, your mapping, multimedia, and even the built in ways to talk to the user - such as the SMS example from 2005 - could well be the ways where the N-Gage service can differentiate itself clearly in the mind of games players."

There are many things that we would like to see on N-Gage, but you can't always get what you want. Instead, here's a list of ten suggestions for the future of N-Gage which we think are fairly plausible, and which may help the N-Gage platform in the long term:
1. The Actual Launch
Yes, tongue slightly in cheek here, but we've been waiting for Next Gen N-Gage for quite some time. Some of us remember when it was supposed to launch in 2006! We know it's almost ready as the public beta testing has already begun, and there don't seem to be too many bugs.
It would be really cool if: Nokia brought out the full N-Gage service for all compatible phones and released all the finished games.
2. Releasing Lament Island on N-Gage
Lament Island is a beautiful game, with lovely graphics, wonderful music and some interesting use of the phone's microphone and camera. It's an S60 3rd Edition game so it's technically no different to other new N-Gage games, and it works in QVGA resolution in both landscape and portrait mode, so it should be playable on all N-Gage-compatible phone models. The developers have said in an interview that they will support the new N-Gage plaform if asked. On top of all that, Lament Island is a Chinese game. China is Nokia's biggest market and getting bigger all the time, and forging relationships with Chinese game developers now may be key to N-Gage's future success.
You can see All About Symbian's megagame review of Lament Island here, and there's a gameplay video of Lament Island here.
It would be really cool if: Lament Island could be brought to a wider audience by being sold through N-Gage.
3. Free games as prizes
The original N-Gage Arena didn't really have many prizes as such, just online scoreboards with the occasional contest featuring real rewards such as gamecards, phones and t-shirts. Now that Next Gen N-Gage is here with its downloadable games, perhaps Nokia might give free games to the winners of all regular tournaments and other Nokia-sponsored competitions? Third party games might be a problem, but first party games should be easy to arrange as Nokia owns the rights to them.
It would be really cool if: the winners of organised events on N-Gage Arena received free games.
4. Cricket games
Some people (especially those in North America and most of Europe) may laugh at the idea of Cricket-based video games, and these same people may dismiss it as a minor sport played by a small number of eccentric English people. In fact Cricket is one of the world's largest sports, with more people following it than Baseball, American Football, Basketball or Golf. Cricket is particularly strong in emerging markets including India, which is now well on its way to overtaking Europe and America economically and has a population greater than Europe and the USA combined. India is also Nokia's second largest market now, and its share is still growing.
It would be really cool if: there was some kind of Cricket game franchise on N-Gage. Most Cricket fans have a phone but no console, so Cricket games are arguably a natural fit for phone gaming.
5. Bluetooth controller
Many N-Gage phones (including the Nokia N82, N93, N95 and N96) have a TV Out feature, which lets you play games or use any other function on a real television set. Some games play very well on a big screen, but it would be even better if you didn't have to be crouched in front of the set using a phone on the end of a short cable to control the game. There already is a wireless alternative, you can control games using a Bluetooth wireless keyboard, which works on all N-Gage phones. However, keyboards generally don't have a good layout for gaming and you can't hold them in your hands like a controller. An increasing number of people in the world have a TV and phone but no console, so this kind of setup might well be the future of gaming if someone could solve the controller problem.
Some small third party companies have actually made Bluetooth controllers for phones in the past, but several vital ingredients were missing: the phones didn't have TV Out, the phones' screen resolutions were much lower than today, and the phones' screens only worked in vertical/portrait mode. All of those problems have now been corrected, and N-Gage provides a good source of games, so we need the Bluetooth controllers back.
It would be really cool if: someone at Nokia (or any other manufacturer) took the insides of a Bluetooth keyboard, removed the letter keys, and put the remaining hardware in a controller-shaped casing, perhaps with the horizontal layout of the original N-Gage. It wouldn't require any new drivers or software or research, the existing Bluetooth keyboard software built into N-Gage phones is already good enough, and the cost of doing this would be minimal. Everything a Bluetooth controller requires is already in place and ready to go, it just needs one small step to actually make it happen.
If Nokia is nervous about comparisons with home games consoles, they could call it a "Multimedia Controller" or something like that, and say that it's a general remote control for phones with TV Out.
6. Something like Habbo
In case anyone's unaware, Habbo (formerly known as Habbo Hotel) is a popular online community for PC users which consists of a Lego-like isometric virtual world. Its cute graphics have tended to appeal to younger users (indeed its current strapline is "Hangout for teens"), but the general principle behind it has appeal for people of all ages, and Sony is about to launch something similar but more grown-up called "Home" for its PlayStation 3 games console.
It would be really cool if: there was something like Habbo Hotel for the N-Gage community, a sort of real world for Arena users to explore, something midway between a chat room and an online game. Perhaps it could be accessible on both phones and PCs?
(Incidentally, one of the "lost" games from Next Gen N-Gage was Habbo Islands, which was an official tie-in with the owners of Habbo. Unfortunately nothing has been heard about the game since 2006 so it's presumably been cancelled, but it was never intended as a multiplayer experience anyway. It was to consist of offline gameplay involving mini-games on a tropical island drawn in a Habbo style.)
7. Location Based Games
A lot of interesting things have been produced by individual programmers, and one of the most interesting for N-Gage phones was the freeware tech demo The Journey. It used the serial numbers of nearby mobile phone masts to determine where you were, and to progress in the game you had to physically walk from one place to the other. It won awards because it showed a way of blurring the line between real and virtual worlds, as the player would associate the virtual world with the real world (for example your local supermarket in the real world might be a bar full of hoodlums in the virtual world).
To be honest, there wasn't much gameplay in the original Journey, it was mainly intended as a free demonstration of the concept. A more playable commercial sequel "The Journey II" was released soon afterwards though.
It would be really cool if: at least one location-based N-Gage game was published, perhaps using GPS instead of phone masts as there are so many GPS-compatible N-Gage phones available or on the way, and GPS is much more accurate in relating virtual world distances to real world ones.
8. Gaming festival for indie developers
There are a lot of small mobile gaming developers out there, who often make very good games but can't reach a wide audience, or have very good ideas for games but don't have the resources to polish them to a commercial standard.
It would be really cool if: There was a regular gaming festival on N-Gage where new ideas were given a chance to shine on a widely used gaming platform. Perhaps this is close to what Nokia intends with their Mobile Games Innovation Challenge?
9. "Lifestyle" games
N-Gage is for games, but what ARE games? The recent surprise success of titles such as Wii Fit and the Brain/Maths/English Training series on consoles has shown that owners of gaming platforms are quite willing to buy more serious applications if their serious purpose is presented in a fun and easy-to-use way. Perhaps Nokia could do something similar on N-Gage, for example more friendly versions of their Sports Tracker or Wellness Diary?
It would be really cool if: Nokia made some games which served some kind of useful purpose in a fun way. After all, the main reason why people carry a phone with them everywhere is because it's a useful tool.
10. Theme downloads
One of the coolest things you can do with an N-Gage phone is to install a new theme which changes all the backgrounds, menus and icons.
It would be really cool if: the new N-Gage platform had a theme download section, perhaps with themes inspired by the games just like the old "fanpacks" on the original gen N-Gage site. Might we suggest hiring Babi, P@sco and Pizero?

Way back, one of our readers begged for an iPhone LoJack solution. He wanted his iPhone to "call home" regularly in case of loss or, let's be more realistic, theft. Over the past week, I finally had a chance to give this request some time, and I put together findme. It's a command-line program that returns the location of the cell phone tower nearest to your iPhone. When run, it tells you the tower id, plus its latitude and longitude courtesy of Google Maps.
Still, how to get the location report to a place you can get it... but nobody else can... and without receiving a zillion SMSes? For this part of the puzzle, enter Twitter. Twitter dev Britt Selvitelle helped walk me through the setup for a private account that allows your iPhone to phone home but keeps the location data relatively secure.
To do this, create a new Twitter account just for your iPhone (it will need its own unique email address, separate from your main account, so have one handy). Open the Settings panel, and look for the "Protect My Updates" checkbox. It's towards the bottom of the page, just above the Save button. Check this and click Save. With protected updates, only the Twitter users you approve will see the updates for this iPhone-only account (just you? you + spouse? spouse, kids, and "special friends?" Up to you).
After creating your phone's Twitter account, you're ready to set up your iPhone to tweet in on a regular basis. Here's how.
1. Install findme Add findme to your local binaries folder. Under 1.1.3, I've been using /var/root/bin for my utilities. If you use another location, substitute that path for mine. Make sure to chmod 755 findme so that it can be executed.
2. Make sure you have curl It's a standard part of the BSD distribution, if memory serves. You'll need it to contact Twitter. Your iPhone will only be able to call in via curl and Twitter if it has Internet access, through EDGE or WiFi.
3. Create a tweet shell script Copy the following text into a new text file, and add it to your binaries folder.
#! /bin/sh curl --basic --user username assword \ --data status="`/var/root/bin/findme`" \ http://twitter.com/statuses/update.xmlUse the proper path to findme and substitute your actual username and password. Make the file executable, i.e.
chmod 755 tweet
4. Create a launch daemon In /System/Library/LaunchDaemons, you'll find a simple daemon that runs once a day, called com.apple.daily.plist. Copy this to com.sadun.tweet.plist, and edit it as follows:
Update the Label to com.sadun.tweet.
Kill the two lines that relate to "nice". You don't want your lojack to be usurped by other processes.
Change the program arguments to /var/root/bin/tweet.
Change the start interval from 86400, according to your needs. 86400 is once a day (60 seconds * 60 minute * 24 hours). Right now, I have mine running every ten minutes (600) because I needed to check that the LaunchDaemon was functioning properly.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd"> <plist version="1.0"> <dict> <key>Label</key> <string>com.sadun.tweet</string> <key>ProgramArguments</key> <array> <string>/var/root/bin/tweet</string> </array> <key>StartInterval</key> <integer>600</integer> </dict> </plist>5. Reboot. This allows our iPhone to restart, loading your new launch daemon.
The findme software was written around material orginated by the iPhone dev team and by Hisper of the Google Maps online developer forum, and was helped by Saurik -- because the iPhone's built in host name resolution is horrible. Thanks also to aCujo for his help. The Twitter curl calls are courtesy of Britt's brilliant assistance. You can drop him a note to say thank you. Thanks also go to Mike Rose, whose idea it was to use Twitter instead of SMS.
Tip: If you find that your tweets are full of "Location Not Found" messages, edit the tweet shell script and duplicate the curl call. This runs the call twice. Usually the "Location Not Found" message goes away the second time.
Another Tip: If you're traveling across the country, change your start interval to 15 minutes or a half hour and use a public Twitter account. (Remember to reboot after making changes to the Launch Daemon). Your friends will be able to track your progress using the Google Maps URL that's tinyURL'ed into each tweet.
Enjoy your newfound location awareness!

Designer Alexei Mikhailov isn’t out to convince people his iStick concept is the perfect mobile convergence device. In fact he clearly points out the iStick isn’t for viewing movies and the screen is too small for effective photo viewing. What it does have is a visual replication of the iPhone/Touch space inside a device the size of a lipstick tube.
Big square icons and of course Coverflow let you navigate the Mac way. What’s interesting is his surface design. All four surfaces are touchscreens which could present some interesting and unique interface design. The integrated WIFI also enables you to browse iTunes. It’s not an iPod replacement per say. Think of it more as a big brother to the iPod Shuffle.

StyleTap, the folks behind the CrossPlatform Palm emulator for Windows Mobile have built a proof of concept version of the software for the iPhone / iPod touch. They're not committing to releasing any such product, and aren't releasing the software as a beta or anything like that at the moment, but the video demo of the software in action is certainly promising. All the apps are rather responsive, the device benchmarks a good bit faster than the Tungsten | T, and Apple's keyboard is even integrated into the proceedings quite nicely.

Since the debut of the iPhone I thought it needed a bit more sparkle and wow. Changing the color through paint was out of the question due to durability issues, I wanted to create something special. I have seen some mods online where people paint their phones with spray paint, even one place that gold plates the black. Paint is crappy especially spray paint. Trying to get it to bond on metal is impossible and with keys in my pocket and everything else it would end up looking horrible after a month. The place that gold plates the backs has the same problem. Anyone who knows anything about metal plating knows that while gold plating aluminum is possible it is really scrappy and wears off really easy. This wasn't a viable solution. After a lot of research and analysis of the iPhone hardware itself I came across an interesting technology, TiN.
Used on industrial drill bits and high wear applications this plasma deposition seemed like the perfect solution. With my research I found it is used on many high end watches to create an extremely durable beautiful surface finish.
You can check out its cool properties on your own, for me it became the holy grail for my iPhone modification. Again a lot of work ensued and a lot of $ spent but I have finally done it. Here are some pix, The gold is TiN and the black is TiAlN. Let me tell you these things are a bear to take good pictures of. I also tracked down some new aluminum backs and had them hard anodized black to match the black antenna cover.

Mollusk posted this:
Ok, here's the updated version of XFlib... No complete changelog, as we changed a lot of stuff...
Off the top of my head :
- VGA support, now works much much better on VGA phones !
- WinCE 5 support (lots of GPS can actually run the games !)
- New pad stuff added, mainly usefull for smarpthone apps
(Pad.Newpress(etc...) => .SoftLeft and SoftRight (for softkeys), .Ok and .Back, .Pound and .Star (numpad stuff), and Pad.Newpress.Number returns the numpad value or -1 if no number from the numpad was pressed (used in Skinz Sudoku)
- Rot/Zoom pixel thingy should be fixed
- Now removes the topbar when run on a smartphone (actually, only tested on 240x320 smartphones, not sure what it does for 176x220 ones)
- When minimizing the app/game, opening the exe again doesn't launch another instance anymore, it just gives the focus back to the original one
And that's about everything I remember ^^ If you have any questions, I'll be around !

As you may or may not know, Apple has made some sort of announcement -- however minor -- every Tuesday since the beginning of 2008. The internet is currently stacked floor-to-ceiling with guesses of what this last Tuesday in February will bring. Many are speculating that it's going to be the often-discussed, never-seen MacBook Pro update, while others are certain that this will be the day old Jobsy unveils iPhone's supposedly-delayed SDK to the world. Still there are those who believe this Tuesday will see the launch of the Apple Robot Army, while many think that we're going to finally get a look at that iShrink shrink ray that's been long-rumored. Of course, it's possible this will be a heaping dose of iNothing. We want to know:

Release notes:
Version 0.31 is in the XLaunch folder. Try tilting it on its side! Now supports Webclips as well as app icons.Oh, and p.s. Yes, it does work on the touch. And p.p.s. This probably means that AppFlow is deprecated. What do you all think? Let me know.

Locations - a native iPhone application to watch webcam images whenever you want and wherever you are.
Release notes:
I got my test iPod Touch yesterday and was able to dig down the problem Locations v0.3.0 had within 30 minutes. Nice. So here you go: Locations 0.3.1 is now again supporting (as far as I know) all devices in all versions. Am I wrong? Let me know in the comments.
Locations 0.3.1 is available in STE repository which is part of the community sources available by default when installing the Installer.app. Please support Ste by donating for his hard work. Since I bought an iPod Touch especially for testing purposes, donations would also be very much appreciated!
Thank you and enjoy!
Update: Sadly there are some (new) known issues with this release:
[new]: Main “Locations†list view is too short, the last location is only visible by half
[known but detected only now]: Search does not show any results, if the user switched on another search result page with a previous search
[new]: Massimo reported that adding more than 7 locations manually will result in the following message: “not pointing to a valid image†(not able to confirm that one yet). Just got another report that the issue is solved after the iPod rebooted.
[known]: Scrolling too much (in my case 99 times) in the widescreen mode crashes the app

Apple's 1.1.4 firmware update for the iPhone and iPod touch just hit the wires, courtesy of iTunes 7.6.1.9. Nobody knows what exactly is in store (SDK support, perhaps?), so obviously those jailbreakers out there might want to hold off while the braver souls among us give it a shot. For the record, no SDK has hit Apple Developer Connection yet, so take that for what you will. So far those who've successfully updated haven't seen any changes, but we'll keep you posted. So far the entire official word from Apple on the release seems to be "Bug fixes." Typical.
Update: So far we've tested 1.1.4 on a jailbroken 1.1.3 iPhone and a non-jailbroken 1.1.3 iPhone, and had zero problems with either, including intact music libraries after the procedure -- your mileage may vary! We went through all of the system settings and can't spot anything new. Multiple sources are claiming ZiPhone works, but it's not fully tested and may be a little wonky at this point, so proceed with caution.
Update 2: Well, ZiPhone claims to have worked, but there aren't any icons for our installed apps, and we can't uninstall or reinstall. Also, it's worth noting that since this is a rather hefty update in terms of file size, and yet added features seem non-existant, our best guess is that this paves the way for an SDK in the coming weeks.

Looks like there's something to this "downloading music" thing after all -- just eight months after topping Amazon, iTunes has now passed Best Buy to become the number two music retailer in the US. Apple says 50 million customers have bought over 4 billion songs, with 20 million sold on Christmas day alone. That leaves just Wal-Mart in first place, but with the percentage of digital music sales growing each quarter, ol' Wally may not be safe for long.

Never heard of Abilene Christian University? We're guessing a wide majority of the general public hasn't either, but the institution is definitely getting its name out there by promising each incoming freshman this fall an iPhone or iPod touch. Granted, these aren't being explicitly marked as "free," but similar to Duke's efforts in years past, ACU plans on using these devices for educational enrichment. Reportedly, the handhelds will enable students to "receive homework alerts, answer in-class surveys and quizzes, get directions to their professors' offices, and check their meal and account balances" -- and that's just for starters. Interestingly, we aren't told whether or not the folks already enrolled will be left out -- nor what determines which Apple you get -- but we do know that the entity is hoping to "expand the program in the future."

A couple of University of Glasgow students have built a prototype of a program that brings haptic touchscreen technology to the iPhone. It's a buggy program, but even if the kinks get worked out a question remains: does anybody need it?
Haptic touchscreens, as you probably know, provide tactical feedback when a button is pressed. In this case, the phone vibrates when you hit a button. As it stands, the program is extremely buggy, crashing out and leaving the vibrations going even after you've hit the button. But even if it was running perfectly, with a short vibration coming every time you hit a button, would you want it?
First of all, having your phone vibrate almost continuously while you type a text message would be annoying. Secondly, it would suck up loads of battery life. Thirdly, it seems like it wouldn't really help at all. At this point, most iPhone users seem pretty used to the keyboard; it's not a major griping point. And while haptic feedback might come in handy for, say, selecting icons from the home screen, it's not going to allow you to select buttons or type without looking like you can with physical buttons. It seems more a gimmick than an upgrade.
What do you think? If you had the option to download a program that added haptic functionality to your iPhone, would you do it?

February 27th, 2008, 01:53 Posted By: wraggster
As reported by Erica Sadun over at TUAW, Apple has released the 1.1.4 firmware. No sooner had I posted [a comment on her blog entry] that I thought folks should wait to see what Zibri came up with for a 1.1.4 jailbreak, as I thought his was technically the most correct of the various 1.1.3 jailbreaks, Erica reported that Nate True had run Zibri’s existing 1.1.3 jailbreak on his 1.1.4 iPhone and it worked. Jailbreaking works, but he has not tested activation or unlocking yet, both of which he suspects are broken until Zibri updates “ziphone†for 1.1.4. This is all great news. I recommend that everyone just hold off a little bit, until Zibri has said he’s updated it for 1.1.4 and then go for it. If you check his blog, you’ll see he’s working on doing that, right now.
Nate reported that after jailbreaking it, Installer.app thought OpenSSH was still installed, even though it no longer was, and that he couldn’t uninstall it (main script execution failure). I have released an update to OpenSSH that anyone with this issue can update to. If you update to it before you jailbreak your 1.1.4 iPhone, then you should be able to uninstall it ok, via Installer.app, even though it’s gone, as it will now ignore the error it gets when it tries to stop the now-missing daemon. You can then simply reinstall it. If you already jailbroke it and can’t uninstall it, just upgrade to the new version and you’re all set to go. Nate says the root password is still “alpineâ€.
UPDATE: In comment #132 on Erica’s blog entry, mentioned above, Zibri says:
“I already found everything..
I just need to recompile, check new offsets, do a test and release.
Expect a new version in a day.â€

As I'm sure you already know, Apple has released firmware versions 1.1.4. It appears that most of the process we currently use no longer works properly. We will have a release in 2 to 3 days that is compatible with 1.1.4 for iPhone and iPod Touch. In the mean time, do not upgrade your device.
Thanks!

It's confirmed: Apple's next event is scheduled for March 6th, next Thursday. It'll be a Town Hall event; obviously new MacBooks and MacBook Pros aren't to be expected, but the unambiguous "iPhone software roadmap" and the image above should help guide our assumptions as to what will be discussed. The SDK's a given, but "exciting new enterprise features," eh?

This release of OpenSSH is a repackaging, for the iPhone Installer.app.
Changes:
Fixed issue preventing it from being “uninstalled†when it wasn’t really there anymore, having been wiped out in a firmware upgrade.
If you upgrade your firmware and can’t “uninstall†the old OpenSSH, just upgrade to this one.
If you update your OpenSSH to this version before you upgrade your firmware, you should be able to “uninstall†this one afterwards, whereupon you can just re-install it.

This is something many UIQ 3 users have been waiting for (me included!). A native SIS client for Google Maps instead of a Java Midlet. The new client is fast, looks neat and has a function called 'My Location' which basically gives a guess of your whereabouts. No press release whatsoever, but for you who want to test it, head over to http://www.google.com/gmm using your UIQ 3's internet browser and download the SIS file. Screenshots after the break.
In my opinion, this is a good sign, showing support for UIQ application development. Not to forget that UIQ Technology signed an agreement with 6 new partners early this year and this could be one of the results. It is a very welcome move and hopefully it will not stop here. There are other Mobile Google Apps clients which need to be made available as native Symbian, especially the GMail Mobile client. The current Java implementation, while it does the job really well, is getting slower and not as good as it would have been, if it was made available natively.

Hold the presses: Apple may be releasing a new iPhone this year... with 3G! Crazy, we know. The latest iteration of this rumor comes to us courtesy of UBS analysts, who say Infineon will likely be building chips for the phone -- they're powering the current iPhone, so no real surprise there. UBS is also betting on a mid-year 3G iPhone launch, and thinks that EDGE production will ramp down early so Apple gets a chance to clean out inventories. We've got a good feeling about this one, guys.

We got wind of this in the early AM, but now it's official: O2 is picking up the iPhone in Ireland, selling the 8 gigger for €399, and the 16GB for €499. Tariffs range from €45 for 175 minutes to €100 for 700 minutes, and all plans include 1GB of data. It sounds like quite the scam compared to O2's iPhone plans in the UK, but we're going to just chalk it up to cultural differences not explored in Colin Farrell's latest masterpiece, "In Bruges."
Update: Some tipsters have pointed out that O2 Ireland makes no mention of Visual Voicemail on its iPhone pages, which is odd considering the fact that O2 UK highlights the feature. It could be a oversight, or it could mean that those unsightly tariffs are, in fact, true highway robbery.

Phew, we were starting to worry we'd get through the week without someone suing Apple. This time it's a patent lawsuit by a Massachusetts man named Romek Figa, who claims to have patented a caller ID system infringed by the iPhone. Figa's patent, which was granted in 1990 and references two-line LCD screens and external caller ID equipment, describes a way to associate incoming numbers with stored contact names, and he's looking to halt sales of the iPhone and have Apple pony up some hefty damages and license his patent, which the company has thus far declined to do. We wonder why. We also wonder why Figa hasn't sued Nokia, Microsoft, HTC, Samsung, LG, Motorola, and Sony Ericsson, since, you know, all those companies make phones with caller ID as well, but maybe that's coming next -- he could probably end up simply owning Moto's flailing phone division, if his lawyers play their cards right.
Update: According to statements by Figa's attorneys this morning, Moto, Nokia, and Samsung have already licensed the patent, but Apple "refused to take a license on the terms offered." Interesting -- but they also said Figa sent his demand letter directly to Steve Jobs, which seems like the least efficient way possible of handling this deal.

Although we'd been hearing that Apple had slowed down iPhone production, the company is still on track to hit its goal of selling 10m units this year, according to COO Tim Cook. Cook, speaking at a Goldman Sachs investor's conference in Vegas, also said that "Apple is not married to the single, exclusive-carrier model," and that Apple is open to new ways of selling the iPhone. That's an interesting change in tone from the usual "we need carrier relationships to make things like Visual Voicemail work" lines we've heard, but it's not necessarily out of the blue -- we're tempted to say Apple's relatively hands-off approach to unlockers and jailbreakers is actually a direct result of that attitude. Of course, that doesn't mean anything's going to change in the States soon, since AT&T has that five-year exclusive deal, but it could mean interesting things are in store elsewhere.

t's been nearly four years since Japanese video game maker Konami (KNM) first established its mobile division, re-releasing Frogger as its maiden cell-phone-compatible title. Oh, how far things have come since. The company has just taken the wraps off Metal Gear Solid Mobile, in effect proving that mobile gaming need not be a dumping ground for long-forgotten arcade games from the '80s, with their crude graphics intact.
Instead, Metal Gear Solid Mobile is a graphically rich stealth-action game that manages to more or less recreate the experience of the popular console franchise—yes, even on a phone. It's an impressive technical feat that shows how quickly mobile titles are becoming more sophisticated. Konami took a year to develop this game. By comparison, the team behind the company's mobile version of Contra 4, another so-called triple-A title, took about half the time.
The goal, of course, is to entice wireless users to spend more than a few bucks for mobile games. Indeed, Metal Gear Solid Mobile will cost either $3.99 a month or $9.99 to buy outright through Verizon Wireless, which will have exclusive rights to the title for three months before it becomes available through other networks. Konami says the game is compatible with about 30 handset models in Verizon's lineup.
Secret Agent Snake
Players take on the role of Snake, a secret agent adept at world-saving espionage. Whereas other first-person shooters place an emphasis on "run and gun" game play that highlights twitchy hair-trigger action, both the console and mobile versions of Metal Gear focus on sneaking around to quietly kill or knock out enemies.
Ironically, this kind of stealth play is much better suited to cell phones, which lack the multidirectional joysticks used with console and PC games to maneuver an avatar at a rapid pace. In other words, the slow, drawn-out movements of the main character in this game are easily controlled with a phone's keypad, which, depending on the model you're using, may not always be ergonomically accommodating.
The graphics, meanwhile, are impressive. In fact, the visuals are probably the most innovative element of the game, producing 3D images that come startlingly close to PlayStation 2 quality. I played the game on LG's (LGERF) VX9400 phone, which has a screen that rotates 90 degrees to reorient as a wide-screen view. This game is so good-looking, I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes an advertising vehicle for handset-makers later this year.
Great Design, Weak Story
A bevy of smartly designed features make this feel much more like a full-blown console title than the typical games that come either preloaded on a phone or that you can download for a few bucks. For instance there's an automatic targeting lock and an optional first-person perspective that allows you to see through a character's eyes. Nice touches like these make playing on a phone surprisingly enjoyable. It's even possible to use a phone's built-in camera (on supported models) to snap pictures of colors around you and use them as camouflage. It's a gimmick, yes, but a fun one that nicely dovetails with the whole "mysterious secret agent with lots of gadgets" theme.
Longtime Metal Gear fans, however, will find the game's narrative its weakest point. Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima has earned demigod status among hard-core gamers for the high-polish, cinematic storytelling in his titles. He's well-known for spinning complex yarns, usually via longish scenes that manage to work in everything from existential philosophy to post-structural semiotic analysis.
But on the phone, the intellectual landscape isn't quite so fertile. To accommodate shorter play sessions—on the bus or subway for instance—the game's story unfolds at an accelerated clip, largely through short dialogue sequences between the main character and the supporting characters.
Yet despite the simpler missions with fewer objectives, Metal Gear Solid Mobile manages to maintain the mood and aesthetic of the series even with abbreviated content. While it certainly won't replace the console experience or match its depth, all in all, the end product is an impressive—and fun—new benchmark for mobile gaming.

It was only a matter of time till the serious iPhone SDK rumors started flying, and with Apple's Town Hall event next Thursday, it's possible some of what we're hearing is right on. If that's the case, prepare to be letdown in a major way.
According to iLounge, Apple will be severely restricting access on software for the iPhone and iPod touch, only allowing apps to be downloaded through iTunes, hand-picking which applications will make it to the store, and cutting off developer's access to accessories which interface with the dock connector.
Of course, this is just about what we expected from Steve, since he's already lauded Nokia for its S60 verification scheme. Additionally, the report claims that the SDK we see next week will be an incomplete beta, with the full version rolling out in June to coincide with the WWDC.
Thinking of any good reasons to keep jailbreaking your phone? Yeah, us too.

If you happen to own an iPhone, and you happen to have updated to the 1.1.4 firmware, you can now easily jailbreak, activate, and unlock your phone with a couple of simple solutions. As you may have heard, iNdependence 1.4 beta 5 is out, which will do all sorts of non-Apple approved things to your device from OS X, though if you're looking for the ultimate cross-platform solution, you probably can't do better than the latest version Zibri's all-in-one package, Ziphone 2.5. Both apps make it about a million times easier than this was a few weeks ago, though we've seen video of a new solution -- jailbreaking directly from iTunes -- that could make this process even simpler (though considerably more illegal).

While tilt-sensitive cell phone gaming is apparently nothing new in Japan, domestic developers/hackers have been slow to create games that take advantage of the iPhone's built-in accelerometer. Enter Trism, a simple, match-three puzzle game from semi-pro developer Demifroce that twists things around by changing the way blocks fall as you twist things around.
A GameSetWatch interview with the developer reveals more of the story behind the game's ten-day development, and includes an excellent video (embedded below) of the game in action. Unfortunately, the forthcoming demo version will only work on jailbroken phones, but the developer says he'd love to sell the game on iTunes once the official iPhone SDK is unveiled. Apple, are you listening?
