Executing the cost-reduction plan CEO Mark Pincus announced in November, Zynga has shut down, pulled from the app stores, or stopped accepting new players to more than 10 games such as PetVille,Mafia Wars 2, FishVille, Vampire Wars, Treasure Isle, Indiana Jones Adventure World, Mafia Wars Shakedown, Forestville, Montopia, Mojitomo, and Word Scramble Challenge. Comments from gamers on the shutdown notices included things like 'my daughter is heartbroken' and 'Please don't remove petville. I been playing for 4 yrs. and I'M going to miss my pet Jaime.why do you want cause depression for me and others. Why do you want to kill my pet?' For players that have invested a lot of microtransactions and/or time, this comes as a heavy blow

Installous, a major portal for pirated paid apps from Apple's App Store, won't be around anymore. Development team Hackulous today announced the closure of Installous on their official Web site. As of today, the pirated app store no longer works, and only shows these errors: 'Outdated version. Installous will now terminate' or 'API Error. API unavailable.' For many years, Installous offered complete access to thousands of paid iOS apps for free for anyone with a jailbroken iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. Think of it as being able to walk into a fancy department store, steal anything you want, and never get caught.

"For the last few years, I've been using Android tablets for various of the reasons that most casual tablet owners do: as a handy playback device for movies and music, a surprisingly decent interface for reading books, a good-enough camera for many purposes, and a communications terminal for instant messaging and video chat. I started out with a Motorola Xoom, which I still use around the house or as a music player in the car, but only started actually carrying a tablet very often when I got a Nexus 7. And while I have some high praise for the Nexus 7, its limitations are frustrating, too. I'll be more excited about a tablet when I can find one with (simultaneously) more of the features I want in one. So here's my wish list (not exhaustive) for the ideal tablet of the future, consisting only of features that are either currently available in some relevant form (such as in existing tablets), or should be in the foreseeable near future; I'll be on the lookout at CES for whatever choices come closest to this dream."

Yes, the black Galaxy Note II may have been more wishful thinking than reality, but that doesn't mean Samsung is sticking to a narrow palette for its extra-large flagship. A supposed magazine page in South Korea shows both a brown Note II (already available in Japan) and a previously unseen red model headed to the country at an unspecified point in the future. The claim sounds promising for those who've wanted more options than gray and white. All the same, we'll remain skeptical unless the new colors are made official -- Samsung hasn't commented on the authenticity of the page, and the original Korean forum post has disappeared without a trace. We can't help but hope it's real, though, if just for the chance of another smartphone designed for vampires.

If you're running iOS 6, your smartphone, media player ortablet may be taking a bit longer than usual to shake that post-party hangover. Users are reporting that the latest Apple OS'Do Not Disturb feature remains engaged even after its scheduled period has ended, with the misstep linked to January 1st. As you can see in the screenshot above, the feature fails to flip off automatically, as confirmed by the crescent icon beside the current time -- adjusting the date does seem to offer a temporary fix. When enabled, Do Not Disturb flips the device to silent mode, so you'll need to keep an eye on the screen in order to catch phone calls, text messages and other notifications. The tool does not disable alarms set through the native Clock app, however.
There doesn't appear to be an official fix available, but if you're experiencing this issue, you can cancel that last-minute Genius Bar appointment -- Apple reps aren't likely to have a solution just yet. And, if you've been trying to reach an iPhone owner without success, expect a call back only once they've had a chance to check their device. New Year's bugs seem to be an annual tradition at Apple -- the alarm is a frequent target, and while this is the first year for an extended DND, the feature just launched in late 2012 with iOS 6.
[Thanks, Martyn]
Update: So, apparently Apple didn't get the memo. Cupertino's latest iPhone 5 ad, titled "Dream" and embedded after the break, transports you to the wonderful world of Do Not Disturb. Venus and Serena Williams are playing ping-pong and everything is white. So fun. And when was the ad first released? Just this morning. Didn't you get the notification?

Codezombiegames has released a walkthrough of its new Android console.
The video shows an in-depth overview of the Ouya development kit and features the studio’s own Deadly Dungeons title in action.
Ouya is an android-based gaming system that plugs into a television set, enabling the user to play Android games and apps. It will run on a Tegra 3 quad-core processor and will support cloud gaming service OnLive.
Developer kits have been available to game studios for the last few weeks and the system is set to launch in April. The Ouya will cost between £70-£127 depending on how many controllers you want.

Data released by Experian Marketing Services has revealed that Apple's returns policy was the most searched for policy on Christmas Day.
The US firm's position within the list comes as a surprise as five of the top 20 Christmas gifts this year were Apple products.
"Sadly not everyone gets exactly what they want at Christmas, and so Christmas Day and Boxing Day are key days when consumers go online to spend Christmas money or organise returns for unwanted gifts," said James Murray, digital marketing manager for Experian Marketing Services.
However, it is believed that confusion over the firm's similarly named products is to blame, with many unwrapping the wrong gift on Christmas morning.
"This is probably a case of parents and grandparents confusing the various models of iPads and iPods available, as although an iPad Mini and an iPod Nano might sound similar, they are clearly very different products," continues Murray.
Retailers filled the remainder off the top searched for returns policies, with Argos, Harrods, Debenhams and Toys R Us completing the top five.

Whilst a release remains way off, circulating reports indicate that Apple's newest iPhone device is already in use, running a future version of its iOS software.
App developers have noticed multiple references to an "iPhone6,1" within their logs, along with information suggesting that the device is running an operating system known as iOS 7.
Developers reported a similar occurrence last year with Apple's iPhone 5, noticing a number of references to the flagship device months before it was officially unveiled.
Whilst the data can be faked, previous instances would suggest the data is legitimate since the location information and identifier are identical to that of previous iPhone prototypes, all of which were tested in Cupertino, California, the location of Apple's HQ.
If it remains true to its past routines, Apple will likely announce iOS 7 during the summer at its WWDC event, with an iPhone 6 unveil to follow in the autumn.
iOS 7 is set to be a key release for Apple as it will be the first OS produced with hardware designer Jonny Ives at the helm, who recently took charge of software design.

Armed robbers have hit an Apple store in central Paris while police were distracted with the New Years Eve celebrations on the Champs Elysees.
According to Reuters, four masked and armed thieves made off with potentially millions of Euro’s worth of goods from the store located close to the Paris Opera.
French police have declined to comment on reports that the value of losses may be as high as €1 million, as Apple is apparently still evaluating the loss.
“They were well prepared,†said a spokesman for the French police union, UNSA. “As the majority of police were busy watching the Champs Elysees for New Year's Eve celebrations, the robbers took advantage of this opportunity.â€

Traces of Apple’s new iPhone and iOS software have begun to emerge in app usage logs.
The Next Web has reported that it has been contacted by developers sharing references to a new iPhone identifier and the next major Apple OS update – iOS 7.
According to The Next Web, one developer showed it that the smartphone and tablet manufacturer has been testing hardware linked to a new ‘iPhone 6,1’ identifier, powered by a device running iOS 7, which is scheduled to be rolled out in the middle of 2013.
The developer logs shared with the tech title shows that the app requests originate from an IP address on Apple’s Cupertino campus, therefore indicating that the firm’s software development and app teams are compatibility-testing apps already available on the App Store.
While there are still no concrete details regarding hardware and software features, sources suggest that Apple started work on iOS 7 during the latter half of 2012.
No specifics on hardware or software features are revealed in the developer logs, yet sources have indicated that Apple began working on the new version of iOS 7 towards the end of 2012 and is soon to finalise the features that will be included in its first public release.

Casual games firm PlayJam has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund a new console that plugs directly into a TV’s HDMI slot.
The new device, aptly titled GameStick, will run Android games and come with a Bluetooth controller. The stick-shaped console then slots into the controller for easier portability.
While its design is unique, GameStick is not the first Android console to call for funding – the machine’s most notable rival being the crowd-funded Ouya. But UK firm PlayJam is confident GameStick can hold its own.
“The video games market is indeed fiercely competitive and that is a great thing,†PlayJam CEO Jasper Smith told MCV.
“The best known Android games console today is Ouya. We think it’s a great product but already we have pushed the boundaries in terms of product design to shrink the concept to the size of a HDMI stick with a price point of $79, including controller.

Apple may be looking to improve upon the stylus as we know it today. The Cupertino company filed apatent application with the USPTO for what it calls an 'Active Stylus,' which can be used on capacitive touch sensor panels like those found on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch devices. 'Unlike conventional styluses which work passively by blocking electric field lines between the drive and sense electrodes of a capacitive touch sensor panel, the styluses disclosed in the various embodiments of this disclosure can either act as a drive electrode to create an electric field between the drive electrode and the sense lines of a mutual capacitive touch sensor panel, or as a sense electrode for sensing capacitively coupled signals from one or more stimulated drive rows and columns of the touch sensor panel or both.' According to Apple, active styluses allow for more accurate input without driving up cost.

Today Canonical announced Ubuntu for phones. The new operating system is designed to provide easier access to apps and content than is provided by current mobile OSes. They do this by relying on swipe gestures from the edges of the phone's screen. "Every edge of the phone is used, letting you move faster between apps, settings and content. A short swipe from the left edge of the screen is all it takes to reveal your favourite apps. Page either left or right from the home screen to see the content you use most. A full left-to-right swipe reveals a screen showing all your open apps, while a swipe from the right brings you instantly to the last app you were using. ... A swipe from the right edge takes you back to the last app you were using; another swipe takes you back to the app you used before that. It’s natural to keep many apps open at once, which is why Ubuntu was designed for multi-tasking. ... Swiping up from the bottom edge of the phone reveals app controls." The Ubuntu phone OS is built to work well on low-powered devices. Canonical will be at CES next week working on raising interest from manufacturers. As far as software goes, they have this to say: "Web apps are first class citizens on Ubuntu, with APIs that provide deep integration into the interface. HTML5 apps written for other platforms can be adapted to Ubuntu with ease, and we’re targeting standard cross-platform web app development frameworks like PhoneGap to make Ubuntu ‘just work’ for apps that use them." (In the attached video, the phone OS discussion starts at about 6:37.)

The work which [Mark] did to mount this iPad mini in the dashboard of his Ford truck is commendable. It looks like it came from the factory this way, and the functionality matches that illusion.
He actually started the project before he had the iPad mini on hand. A PDF that mapped out the exact dimensions was used as a template for the layout and alteration. He took the stereo controls out of the original faceplate. That opening was made to fit the screen by cutting, adding putty, then sanding and finishing.
Since the bezel won’t let [Mark] get at any of the buttons on the iPad itself he picked up an external home button on eBay and mounted it just to the left of the screen. Inside the dashboard a docking connector is responsible for powering the tablet and connecting it to the sound system. There’s even a WiFi connection thanks to the MiFi system he mounted in the overhead console.

The somewhat unexpected shutdown of Hackulous' community, and the corresponding departure of related tools like Apptrackr and Installous, left iOS app pirates in something of a panic: many of those who jailbroke their devices expressly for ill-gotten goods suddenly lost one of their main sources. While they haven't earned much sympathy, they've also triggered a surge in services that don't require a jailbreak at all. Months-old pay service Zeusmos has seen a spike in popularity, but more recent upstart Kuaiyong is drawing the most attention. It's offering others' commercial releases through the web, for free -- and on a scale into the thousands of bootleg installs per app, suggesting that it may be abusing enterprise policies rather than Zeusmos' apparent reliance on developer slots.
There's no immediate sign of a crackdown, but those app writers concerned about their revenue might take consolation in knowing that the risks might outweigh the rewards. iTunes syncing breaks the moment a pirated app reaches a device, and there's no guarantee that every copy will be malware-free. Zeusmos also claims to be clamping down on questionable sources in an attempt to steer users towards homebrew apps. Even with those disclaimers, it's still possible that Hackulous' end may have created more problems for some developers than it solved.

Well, it's no "you're holding it wrong," but we can't say we're 100 percent satisfied with Apple's response to the recent discovery of a bug affecting iOS's Do Not Disturb feature. Starting January first, ringers failed to turn back on after the predetermined silent period. Today Cupertino seemed to acknowledge the existence of the flaw but, rather than offer a patch, it simply told customers to be patient:"Do Not Disturb scheduling feature will resume normal functionality after January 7, 2013. Before this date, you should manually turn the Do Not Disturb feature on or off."
Understandably, it'll probably take longer than five days to find the offending code, whip up a fix, test it and roll it out to users. Still, a thorough explanation is always appreciated and the iOS faithful have already been patient enough.

More than a few enthusiasts were gutted when HP exited webOS hardware before the Touchpad Go could even have the distinction of a press release. WebOS Ports' Simon Busch can't resurrect HP's miniature tablet plans, but he can give us an inkling of what we missed with his new alpha port of Open webOS for the Nexus 7. The conversion is surprisingly complete given its basis on a related Galaxy Nexus edition: along with supporting core functionality like the accelerometer and WiFi, it at last cuts the cord and works independently of a PC connection. The only clear flaw is occasional lag. We'd still be cautious with a rough build of an OS that wasn't ever intended for Google's tablet; if that's no obstacle, however, the Nexus 7 port is the next-best way to relive HP's original vision for 2011.

Flurry has reported that during the Christmas week from December 25th-31st, a record-breaking 1.76 billion Android and iOS apps were downloaded.
This figure beats last year’s record week by more than half a billion downloads.
That wasn’t the only record broken, the last week of 2012 also saw the most device activations and app downloads in a single day. Flurry estimates that at least 17.4 million iOS and Android devices were activated on Christmas Day, while 328 million apps were downloaded from both mobile platforms.
When the figures are broken down by country the results reveal that the US downloaded the most during the week with 604 million. China was in second place, having downloaded a total of 183 million and the UK closely followed with 132 million downloads.
The firm predicts that one-billion-download weeks will become the norm in 2013 and break past a two-billion download week during Q4.

Samsung has reportedly set a target of shipping 510 million handsets in 2013, representing a 20 per cent increase on its 2012 shipments.
Reports emerging from Korea say that Samsung is aiming to ship 390 million smartphones over the next 12 months, with the bulk belonging to the firm’s Galaxy range.
76 per cent of the 2013 target will be comprised of smartphones, while the remaining 24 per cent will be made up of feature phones, a Samsung supplier is thought to have told The Korean Times.
Furthermore, the reports suggests that Samsung is preparing to introduce a series of smartphones powered by the open source OS Tizen, with the company teaming up with Japanese mobile operator NTT Docomo to launch Tizen handsets in the country at some point in 2013.
In November 2012, Samsung revealed that its Galaxy S III smartphone had surpassed 30 million units just five months after its launch in May.

Eighteen months ago, Nokia announced a smartphone unlike any other it has produced before. It was a proper smartphone, one that looked miles away from previous Nokia phones: it was sleek, modern and simple at the same time. The hardware was pretty modern, too; no underpowered processors with severely limited RAM issues to be seen here. And, it runs on an operating system that Nokia had announced dead months before the phone's announcement. This, ladies and gentlemen, is the Nokia N9.

In a bit of delicious irony, Microsoft laments Google is not playing fair by excluding access to meta-data on YouTube, preventing the development of the kind of powerful app readily available on Android. From the article: 'In a blog post on Wednesday, Microsoft VP and deputy general counsel Dave Heiner said the software giant has spent two years trying to get a first-class YouTube app running on Windows Phone, but to no avail, thanks to the Chocolate Factory's stonewalling. "YouTube apps on the Android and Apple platforms were two of the most downloaded mobile applications in 2012, according to recent news reports," Heiner wrote. "Yet Google still refuses to allow Windows Phone users to have the same access to YouTube that Android and Apple customers enjoy.

There are plenty of ways to get Android on your TV -- from smartphone docks, to dongles and even the officially sanctioned Google TV. But most of them are missing something, be it a simple way to control them or access to the full Play store. Archos is aiming to solve those conundrums with its new TV Connect, an Android computer, complete with HD camera and a handheld remote with a pair pointer sticks used to simulate a multitouch screen. Under the hood is a 1.5GHz "multi core" CPU, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of expandable storage. For networking you can go old school and plug in an Ethernet line or lose the cables and rely on WiFi. The remote has more control options than you could possibly desire crammed in a form factor that's more than a little reminiscent of a certain failed Atari console. In addition to the pair of pointer sticks, there's a full QWERTY keypad, a directional pad, four game buttons, the standard Android keys and volume controls -- not to mention you can move an onscreen cursor simply by pointing the remote at your TV.
The strongest selling point of the TV Connect, however, is its unfettered access to the Google Play store. That means its vast repositories of music, movies and TV shows are available to you but, more importantly, so are the hundreds of thousands of apps like Netflix, Google Talk and Skype. The Jelly Bean running set top box will be hitting shelves in February for $130.

Joe Danger Touch is set for release this month on iPhone and iPad, developer Hello Games has confirmed to CVG.
We've also taken exclusive screens from a near-final build which we obtained this morning, which can be found below.Joe Danger Touch has been made by just two men at Hello Games, and is the iOS-exclusive follow up to its duo of Joe Danger games on PSN and XBLA. It has been built from scratch for iOS and features new stages and characters - Hello Games' Sean Murray is keen to stress that it's not a port.
Players will be able to send their friends challenges through Game Center and players can also buy new characters via in-app purchases, though they are also unlockable simply by playing through the game.
"I don't think Joe Danger Touch feels like anything else I've played," Sean Murray told CVG. "I want it to feel like it could only work on iOS, because we've built it specifically for the device. Towards the end of the game, it gets super difficult, probably more so than the console version. I'm amazed what levels I can handle sometimes, and the subtlety possible with just a touch interface."
"Playtesters keep telling me it's a nice blend of their other favorite games on iPhone - Bike Baron, Jetpack Joyride and Rayman Jungle Run," he continued. "Usually that would really wind me up, but I kind of see it as a compliment here, that Joe Danger feels at home on iOS, and is being compared to some of the best games on the device."

December 2012 saw Amazon’s Kindle Fire almost double its web usage market share.
According to research conducted by Chitika, Kindle Fire’s share of traffic increased by around 7.5 per cent. Is it coincidence that the iPad’s share of tablet web traffic decline by just over seven per cent? Hmmm
Samsung’s Galaxy tablet saw its web traffic jump by more than a per cent, and even Microsoft’s Surface saw a boost. It was very slight, but a boost is a boost.
Despite all this shifting around, iPad is still crushing its opponents with nearly 79 per cent of the market. But even so, losing over seven per cent to its rival in one month will leave Apple a little concerned.
"We expect that the iPad's share of traffic will return to the 80 per cent range, albeit lower than pre-holiday levels, as users return from vacation and browse with their new devices less frequently," noted Chitika.
The last week of 2012 saw the most device activations and app downloads in a single day, with at least 17.4 million iOS and Android devices activated on Christmas Day.

Strategy Analytics has predicted that Samsung will increase its lead of Apple by growing its smartphone sales by 35 per cent throughout 2013.
The analyst firm estimates Samsung will sell 290 million smartphones as worldwide smartphone sales increase by 27 per cent in 2013, reaching an impressive 875 million units.
"We expect Samsung to slightly extend its lead over Apple this year because of its larger multitier product portfolio," Neil Mawston, executive director at Strategy Analytics, told Reuters.
Apple’s smartphone sales are projected to reach 180 million this year. These figures suggest that Apple will hold 21 per cent of the smartphone market throughout 2013, while Samsung will hold 33 per cent.
Although there has been rumours of Apple releasing an iPhone mini in 2013, Mawston believes it will not happen this year: "The iPhone 5 is growing fast and profitably right now, so there is little incentive for Apple to launch an 'iPhone Mini' this year. We expect the iPhone Mini to be more likely next year, in 2014 when Apple will be forced to discover fresh growth streams."

Supermarket giant trials shops within two of its superstores as part of 2013 mobile push.
In a bid to catapult itself to the top of the UK supermarket pile, Sainsbury’s has announced that it is trialling mobile phone shops in two of its superstores in conjunction with A1 Comms and 20:20 mobile.
Both shops, which are located at Sainsbury’s superstores in King’s Lynn and Letchworth, will sell pay as you phones, SIM-only deals and contract deals with EE, O2, Vodafone and Three, along with a range of mobile accessories.
Meanwhile, handsets available will include a selection of feature phones and smartphones from most major manufacturers, such as Samsung, HTC, Nokia, LG and Huawei. However, the iPhone will not be available as yet, although sources have suggested that it will be given the go ahead in the near future.
The new own-branded mobile shops, which will be staffed by trained Sainsbury’s staff, go someway to furthering the supermarket’s reputation as a brand continuing to embrace new technology, particularly in the mobile realm. Last year, Sainsbury’s began testing a new ‘Mobile Scan & Go’ platform in three of its stores, as well as featuring Aurasma powered AR-enhanced content in its magazine.
A Sainsbury’s spokesman said: “We’re always looking at ways to serve our customers better and we are trialling moving our mobile phone offering into a new dedicated location within our Letchworth and King’s Lynn stores.â€

The threat of mobile viruses could be set to increase significantly in 2013, Cambridge-based security firm Trend Micro has warned.
According to Trend Micro, the third quarter of 2012 saw malware targeting Android grow from approximately 30,000 “malicious†applications to over 175,000.
One of the major concerns mooted by the security firm is the ability of viruses to put consumers’ finances at risk by accessing information from banking apps, while the risk to customers’ private data in general is also a serious issue.
Rik Ferguson, director of security research at Trend Micro, believes that the key problem facing mobile users in the UK is a lack of awareness, with many failing to fully address the threat posed to their device. “In terms of mobile malware, what we’ve seen in 2011 and 2012 is a period of experimentation,†he commented. “We haven’t seen a mobile malware ‘tool kit’ as we’ve seen on PCs. But I think we will begin to see it on mobile.
“I think we will see the establishment of a leading kind of banking malware tool. And a leading kind of information theft toll, which will be commoditised and for sale on the underground market. Criminals will be adding plug-ins and additional functionality but the tool kit will be the root.â€
Furthermore, Ferguson believes that ‘Black Hole’ exploit kits – the biggest threat to computer security - are currently amassing data on mobile OS’. “We will soon see the first exploit kits capable of targeting mobile devices, where your phone can be infected just by accessing a web page,†he said. “When that happens it will be a game changer, as criminals break out of the need to go through the app store – Apple will be targeted.
“Functionally, technologically, we have got what we need from a security point of view but the places where we need to see change and advancement is from smartphone operating system manufacturers, namely Google, Apple, Microsoft and RIM, they need to make sure they partner more closely with the security industry in general to make their operating system more securable.â€

New hacks surface, while Hunted Cow shuts down its pirated game after one week
Newly emerged hacks that make iPhone piracy more straightforward threaten to make life harder for game developers on the platform.
Zeusmos and Kuaiyong are two newly launched services that allow one-tap, instant installs of pirated apps on any iOS device, TNW reports.
No jailbreak is required for these apps to work, which makes them a significant threat to Apple and its development community.
The unnamed 15-year-old creator of Zeusmos claimed it’s just a way to enable homebrew apps without having to buy an annual Apple developer licence, but doesn’t acknowledge that what it does is enable piracy.
Zeusmos and Kuaiyong could make game piracy more accessible, which would be especially dangerous for developers who solely create titles for iOS devices.

The new terms for the Android SDK now include phrases such as 'you may not: (a) copy (except for backup purposes), modify, adapt, redistribute, decompile, reverse engineer, disassemble, or create derivative works of the SDK or any part of the SDK' among other non-Free-software-friendly terms, as noted by FSF Europe's Torsten Grote. Android console newcomer GameStick is off to a flying start after hitting its Kickstarter funding target on just its second day.
The project was after $100,000 and currently sits on $142,000 with 27 days still to run.
The hardware is the brainchild of casual games firm PlayJam. It comes in the form of a joypad with a USB-like drive that can be removed from the underside and plugged directly into a TV’s HDMI slot.
“The response from the Kickstarter community has been truly overwhelming,†PlayJam CEO Anthony Johnson stated. “We are confident in our product and what we hope it will mean for gaming but we were taken aback at how quickly the message was adopted.
“There is no better feeling than having hundreds if not thousands of people endorse your idea.
“While we are shipping as a dedicated games console, we are keen to ensure that users have the ability to hack the device if they so wish and will be providing support for XBMC & DNLA via an optional firmware update in September. We encourage users to hack the device – the time for closed, proprietary systems is ending which bodes well for true innovation.â€
While its design is unique, GameStick is of course not the first Android console to call for funding – the machine’s most notable rival being the crowd-funded Ouya. But UK firm PlayJam is confident GameStick can hold its own.
PlayJam already works with a network of over 250 developers to bring games to Smart TVs, including Disney, Relentless and First Star Software.

[Lambgx02] got tired of his Android device getting bogged down and decided to dig down to the cause of the issue. His investigation led him to believe that entropy is causing the slowdown. He believes that his workaround reduces 90% of the lag on the average Android device.
So how is it possible that entropy is causing the problem? It seems there is a bottleneck when an app requests a random number from the Linux kernel running at the lowest level of the device. Android is set up to use /dev/random for all random number requests, but [Lambgx02] says that location has a very shallow pool of numbers available. When they run out the kernel has to reload with a new seed and this is blocking the app that requested the data from continuing.
His solution was to write his own app that seeds /dev/random once every second using a number from /dev/urandom. He mentions that this might cause a security vulnerability as seeding the random data in this way is not quite as random. There may also be issues with battery life, so make sure to monitor performance if you give it a try.

As neat as the Kindle Fire HD already is, just a few dinky tweaks could turn it into so much more -- a platform for true physics-based gaming, for example, or even for surprisingly fast photo manipulation. How come? Because both the 8.9-inch and 7-inch versions of the Android-based slate come with a graphics engine that can handle OpenCL acceleration. It certainly won't work out of the box, but Amazon has been working quietly with Imagination Technologies -- the folks behind the tablet's PowerVR GPU -- to try it out. The demo after the break is subtle, perhaps, but it's fluid, detailed and goes far beyond anything that a stock device can achieve. It also proves that, in certain circumstances, OpenCL has the power to boost frame rates by 50 percent while simultaneouslylowering power consumption by the same proportion. Read on for more.

utunnels a coder over at LavaLit has ported the Beats of Rage game over to the Android OS. Heres what the coder posted:
I've ported OpenBOR to android last week.
This actually my first android app (besides hello word), so perhaps I need more time to figure out how to optimize it and how to apply proper control logic.
Current progress: it works, better if you have a joystick and map the keys to default pc control layout (that is a=attack, d=jump, f=special, etc). On my LG-p705 it runs at around 25-30fps under 32bit mode, for some reason, it's much slower under 16bit mode.

Pate the coder of the x86 Emulator for Nintendo DS has started his new project which is the first x86 Emulator for Android:
Since my previous DSx86 blog post at dsx86.patrickaalto.com, I have begun working on ax86. I have been on a two-week Xmas vacation which is just ending, and I have been able to work on ax86 several hours per day during my vacation. It has progressed quite nicely, although there is still a huge amount of work remaining, so do not expect a public release version for a while yet. :-)
I spent the first couple of days of my vacation simply getting a "Hello, World" -style Android application running. Even this first "Hello world" application did however already contain my 386 emulation sources from Raiden Legacy, but the problem was that I did not know how best to interface to them from Java. I am reasonably familiar with Java, but not with the Android specialities, so I began searching for tutorials on the net. I found a blog post by Richard Quirk, which seemed to be exactly what I was after. He also moved on to Android programming after coding for Nintendo DS, so it was easy to follow and understand his code and techniques. On the 26th of December I got my "Hello world" application (which was mostly based on his example code) working on my Asus Nexus 7 Android tablet, so I was in business!
The next couple of days were spent studying the example code and figuring out ways to add my own code to it, porting the BIOS and DOS emulation stuff (which had not been needed in Raiden Legacy) from Nintendo DS to Android, and such. I also needed to code the text screen blitting code, so that it converts the PC text mode screen character buffer to RGB565 format used by the Android OpenGL system. Then finally on the 29th of December I got 4DOS.COM starting up in Android!

Videogame hardware manufacturer, Nvidia, have announced their own portable console, tentatively named “Project Shield†at the Consumer Electronics Show, which kicked off in Las Vegas this week.
Project Shield looks kind of like an Xbox controller with a 5†screen attached to it, and it runs on the Android OS. It includes two analog sticks, has a Micro-SD card slot for memory, and an HDMI port for video output. Nvidia say the device is powered by their Tegra 4 processor and will provide 5-10 hours of gaming time on a single charge.
In addition to running its own games, Project Shield will also be able to stream games running on a PC, according to a separate report by the Wall Street Journal. Streaming will reportedly be enabled by a variant of Wi-Fi technology.
Nvidia have not yet announced a release date or price for Project Shield, or details regarding software support.

Adding further evidence to the theory that 2013 is the year of Android gaming devices, PowerA has revealed a new version of the Moga Android controller. Cleverly titled the Moga Pro, the device is a full-size Bluetooth controller styled in the same fashion as an Xbox 360 pad. The unit features two analog sticks, a D-pad, four face buttons, two shoulder buttons and two triggers.
Just like its smaller predecessor, the Moga Pro features an integrated folding grip that secures Android phones (up to 3.2 inches wide) directly to the controller. The controller also comes with a stand for larger phones and tablets. The Moga Pivot App, meanwhile, helps players find and download compatible Android games from Google Play.
The Moga Pro will launch this spring, and our friends at Engadget should go hands-on with device this week at CES.

Supply-chain sources reveal Apple is set to roll out a budget version of the iPhone.
Digitimes reports that sources close to the matter have seen samples of the low-cost iPhone, saying it will have a brand new exterior design and a 5-inch screen.
The budget iPhone is said to be initially aimed at China and other emerging markets, apparently this reason Apple will target China is because a large number of 5-inch displays are sold there.
Digitimes also reports that other sources claim the recent release of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipsets will pave the way for Apple to bring out a budget smartphone. The new handsets are apparently intended to release in the second half of 2013.
It seems out of character for Apple to release a budget version of anything, but then again, and while I would be very surprised if Apple decided to release an iPhone with a larger screen, yet charge less for it, there have a been a number of analysts predicting that an ‘iPhone mini’ will be entering the smartphone market in the next few years.
"The iPhone 5 is growing fast and profitably right now, so there is little incentive for Apple to launch an 'iPhone Mini' this year. We expect the iPhone Mini to be more likely next year, in 2014 when Apple will be forced to discover fresh growth streams," commented Neil Mawston, executive director at Strategy Analytics.
"For Apple to be effective in this segment it needs to come to market soon with a Mini or other similar type product," suggested Foad Fadaghi, research director at Telsyte.

After unveiling its Tegra 4 powered handheld on stage at CES yesterday, the hardware firm has announced the device won't be sold at a loss.
The firm took to its company blog in order to address discussion surrounding the device's yet to be announced price point and how it plans to differ itself from traditional consoles.
Previously, most handheld games devices have entered the market selling for a loss, as firms initially attract gamers and move to secure steady income from them through future titles and games releases.
With this in mind, it's difficult to imagine NVIDIA following this business model with Project Shield, given its business as a hardware manufacturer.
However, the firm used its blog to highlight how the likes of Nintendo and Sony do business, and how it would differ from this with its hardware.
"We'll make our money by selling the device to gamers," the post reads.
"This time-honoured approach isn't one we're taking with Project Shield... our goal with it is to design and sell a truly great piece of hardware, one that fits comfortably in your hand, delights your eyes and blows out your ears."

Ten day competition to be judged by Phil Fish, Ed Fries, Adam Saltsman, Zach Gage, Felicia Day and others
Supporters of the Ouya console have contributed $45,000 in prizes to be awarded in the upcoming CREATE game jam.
The ten-day competition will challenge developers who backed the Ouya Kickstarter campaign to build an original game, which will then be submitted to Kill Screen for review.
The panel of judges includes Phil Fish, Adam Saltsman, Zach Gage, Ed Fries, Felicia Day, and others.
An interesting feature of the competition is that games will be judged in part by the social media support they drum up.
This is obviously of huge benefit to Ouya, which will get a great deal of free advertising, and one more potential hit for every submitted prototype that turns into a full game.

Flagship Grand S handset is the world's thinnest smartphone with a five-inch screen.
ZTE has become the latest handset manufacturer to introduce a new smartphone at CES 2013, with its new flagship 4G Grand S model debuting in Las Vegas.
Due to go on sale during the first quarter of 2013, the Grand S has only been confirmed for release in China.
The 4G handset, which runs Android Jelly Bean, boasts a five-inch screen and features a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro 1.7GHz quad-core processor. It also comes with a 13-megapixel camera and 2-megapixel front facing camera.
Meanwhile, at just 6.9mm thick, ZTE claims that the Grand S is the world's thinnest quad-core smartphone with a five-inch screen.
Kan Yulun, corporate vice president of ZTE and chief technical officer of its mobile device division, said: “The ZTE Grand S gives our customers the latest in technology, functionality and style. We understand that today’s consumers call for advanced features and state-of-the-art multimedia options in their handsets. The ZTE Grand S confidently addresses those demands. It is fitting that we can announce the world debut of the ZTE Grand S at CES 2013, the world’s largest annual innovation event.â€

Cupertino firm falls victim to rumour again, with low end device expected for late 2013.
The iPad Mini was once a product of conjecture, though soon became very real, with Apple launching the 7.9-inch tablet to appease consumers on a lower budget while competing with the likes of Amazon's Kindle Fire line.
Apple is now thought to be working on a low end iPhone, which is expected to be priced at between $99 to $149, according toBloomberg. Cheaper components like plastic are thought to be used in order to achieve the price cut, rather than costly metal and glass materials.
The move would see the firm branch away from its traditional $500+ handsets, while the entry-level device could be released in late 2013, which has become the usual time Apple chooses to launch new products.
The Cupertino firm has been accused of lacking innovation since the passing of Steve Jobs, but the company still sold 5m handsets in its debut weekend and shifted more than two million in the same period when the device hit China.
Meanwhile, the Apple App Store crossed 40bn downloads and 500m active user accounts this week, while paying iOS developers more than $7bn.

Microsoft handset movements to rise from 30m in 2012 to 138m in 2016.
Portio Research has forecast more dark times for ailing RIM, with Microsoft set to ship more Windows Phone-powered smartphones than BlackBerry in 2014, while they will overtake Nokia's Symbian this year. Of course, the latter is perhaps unsurprising, given that Nokia has adopted WinPho for its flagship Lumia line.
WinPho smartphone shipments are estimated to have reached 30m last year, and are expected to hit 138m for 2016, which will see the OS in third place behind Android and iOS from 2014 onwards.
Android secured a 54 per cent share of Western European shipments by OS in 2012, rising slightly from 50 per cent, while iOS increased from 23 per cent to 24 per cent. Meanwhile, BlackBerry declined from 14 per cent to ten per cent year-on-year, as WinPho grew from one per cent to seven per cent.
When observing Eastern Europe, Android leads again to rise from 53 per cent in 2011 to 61 per cent in 2012, while Symbian fell significantly from 23 per cent to seven per cent.
iOS repeated the Western European performance in the East with a marginal climb from 12 to 13 per cent, though BlackBerry dropped from 11 to seven per cent as WinPho leapt from one to 11 per cent.
Huawei earlier debuted its first Windows Phone handset at CES, which boasts 20 days of standby time, whileRIM is set to release its BlackBerry 10 OS at the end of the month, something of a last stand against the competition.

6.1-inch device is either the biggest smartphone yet or the most compact tablet.
Huawei appears to have broken some kind of record at CES 2012, as its new 6.1-inch Ascend Mate becomes either the most whopping smartphone or the most modest tablet to hit the market to date.
The new phablet is primed for use primarily as a smartphone, boasting a 1.5 GHz Hi-Silicon quad-core processor and a 4050 mAh battery. Furthermore, it features an eight-megapixel camera on its rear and a one-megapixel front-facing camera. It is also running Android’s Jelly Bean OS.
However, while size is seemingly the number one concern with the Ascend Mate, its screen resolution only comes in at more modest 1,280 x 720 pixels.
Commenting on the launch, Richard Yu, chief executive of consumer business at Huawei, said: “The Huawei Ascend Mate breaks barriers to deliver a supercharged entertainment, communication and creative experience for all your personal and professional needs.â€
Huawei has announced that the Ascend Mate will only be available in China and will hit shelves in February.

As the next generation of consoles looms, we've seen a growing trend towards low price, compact alternatives such as the Ouya and GameStick, many of which run on the Android mobile platform. But this article on the trend raises a very good point: through the use of cloud computing and game streaming technology, it's entirely possible these machines will be able to keep pace with the powerhouse technology inside the Sony PS4 and Microsoft Xbox 720, and perhaps even overtake them. After all, if these little boxes can simply stream from powerful servers, how can the stalwarts of gaming keep up?"

Announced today at CES 2013, Samsung has updated its Galaxy S II smartphone.
Running on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, the smartphone features a 1.2GHz dual core processor, 4.3-inch WVGA AMOLED Plus display, 8MP rear camera and a 2MP front-facing camera.
While the specs seem pretty much the same as the Galaxy S II, the new smartphone does feature the ability to simultaneously play a video in a pop-up window while using another app. This function also features on the Galaxy S III as well as the Galaxy Note II. And apart from the updated OS, that seems to be pretty much it.
Oh, and if you live in the UK, don’t expect to get your hands on the Galaxy S II Plus any time soon as a spokeswoman has confirmed to ZDNet that the smartphone will not be available over here.

Developers will now be limited on how often they're able to update screenshots for their products within the App Store as Apple cracks down on fake software and scams.
Apple has prohibited the ability to change app screenshots unless a relevant software update is released in conjunction with the images.
The App Store has long suffered from issues involving fraudulent software, with many users being scammed into downloading malicious content that, which has been disguised as a variety of the store's most popular titles.
Before the changes were introduced, app developers were able to change the screenshots for their products as often as they wished, provided that Apple had initially given the app its approval.
The new system is being introduced to limit the number of fake apps on the store and effectively reduce the number of its users mistakenly downloading malicious content to their device.
Within a statement detailing the changes, Apple said: "Beginning January 9, app screenshots will be locked in iTunes Connect once your app has been approved. New screenshots may be uploaded when you submit a binary for an update to an existing app or a new app."
Whilst limiting the number of scammers within the App Store, the changes are also likely to affect genuine developers looking to simply upload new screenshots of their product to their app's listing.

Handset manufacturer boasts of strong sales for its Lumia and Asha smartphones.
Nokia has revealed that its Q4 mobile sales have “exceeded expectations†as a result of strong sales of its Lumia and Asha smartphone lines.
The company announced that sales of its Lumia series almost doubled during the last quarter to 4.4 million units, whilst also noting that its operating expenses have dropped during the same period. These factors are expected to see the company’s operating margins arrive between breaking even and positive two per cent, representing a significant improvement on previous quarters, whereby it warned the market that it would not be able to meet initial forecasts. Nokia had originally estimated that its operating margin for Q4 would be in the region of negative six per cent.
Nokia also stated that its Nokia Siemens Networks performed better than expected in Q4. And, while it didn’t release revenue figures for the division, the company claimed that the “strong†performance of higher margin product categories was one of the key driving forces behind the Q4 improvement.
“We are pleased that Q4 2012 was a solid quarter where we exceeded expectations and delivered underlying profitability in Devices & Services and record underlying profitability in Nokia Siemens Networks,†said CEO Stephen Elop in a statement. “We focused on our priorities and as a result we sold a total of 14 million Asha smartphones and Lumia smartphones while managing our costs efficiently, and Nokia Siemens Networks delivered yet another very good quarter.â€
With regards to its Q4 net sales, Nokia estimates that its devices and services division was at €3.9 billion ($5.1 billion), with total device volumes of 86.3 million units. Its mobile phone sales accounted for €2.5 billion ($3.3 billion) of that, at 79.6 million units, of which 9.3 million were part of its budget Asha range.
Meanwhile, smartphones net sales hit €1.2 billion ($1.6 billion) with 6.6 million units sold, 4.4 million of there were from its Lumia range.
However, in spite of its successful Q4 performance, Q1 is expected to see Nokia’s operating margin drop to negative two per cent due to “competitive industry dynamics.†In other words, competition from the likes of Samsung and Apple.

New chips to be fitted in future high-end smartphones and tablets.
Samsung president Dr Stephen Woo delivered a keynote at CES yesterday, explaining how central mobile is to the tech industry and how processors and memory developments are integral to enhancing devices.
This opened the door for him to unmask the firm's new Exynos 5 Octa eight-core processor. The joint venture from Samsung and ARM is made up of two quad-core chips and will be fitted in new 'high-end' smartphones and tablets.
Woo, said: "Our industry’s centre of gravity is mobile devices and it is the components that are driving this; it’s deep inside the devices where the magic happens."
The Octa will, of course, increase processing power, but use of ARM's big/little tech, which automatically switches between chips based on the task being performed, will conserve battery life.
Meanwhile, Samsung's existing Exynos 5 processor is currently used in 53m devices.

The year is barely a week old, and yet already something momentous has happened. While many of us are expecting it to be the year when Microsoft and Sony bring out new machines and try to get their platform stories moving toward perihelion, it seems that other companies were thinking differently. We already knew about the Ouya, of course, and the rumours about Valve making a dedicated machine for Steam have been circulating for a while.

RIM has announced that it will release six new handsets over the next 12 months, in a bid to cover all areas of the mobile market.
With the BlackBerry 10 launch now just a number of weeks away, the handsets will all run on the new operating system.
Details of the devices are expected to be announced in full at the BlackBerry 10 press conference on January 30th, but for now it’s safe to say the range will cover low, medium and high-end mobile options.
Rumours surfacing on the Internet have suggested that one of the devices will be labelled as the Z10, featuring a full touch screen, while unconfirmed reports also tell of a device branded as the X10, featuring BlackBerry’s QWERTY keyboard.
The new devices will be the first that BlackBerry has brought to the market since the Curve 9320 in May 2012.

Whilst rival firms continue to showcase an array of budget smartphones at this year's CES event, Apple has dismissed claims it is working on an entry-level iPhone.
Earlier rumours suggested that Apple was developing a cheaper version of its flagship handset in order to cut into the budget market as it worked to increase its presence within the Chinese market.
However, the firm's senior Vice President of worldwide marketing, Phil Schiller, has dispelled such rumours, stating that Apple is not working on a new budget device.
Schiller confirmed to Chinese publication Shanghai Evening Newsthat a budget iPhone is not part of Apple's immediate plans, moving on to state that market share is not the company's primary concern.
Whilst it may not be Apple's primary concern, it's no doubt a major concern for the firm, which now holds a 21 per cent share of global smartphone shipments, lacking behind its closest rival Samsung, which continues to sit pretty with its 33 per cent share.
Schiller emphasised that rather than producing a number of different versions of its highest-selling product in order to gain market share, Apple remains focused on producing the best quality product it can, which the VP believes the latest iPhone 5 to be.

The Internet is awash with rumours today that Korean handset manufacturer Samsung is set to bypass MWC (Mobile World Congress) and launch its Galaxy S IV smartphone on March 4th.
An allegedly leaked image has surfaced on SamMobile.com of an invite to Samsung Mobile Unpacked 2013 from one of its Korean members. It also says that the Galaxy S IV will be introduced in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
The website also claimed that it had been given a tip-off from a Samsung insider, stating that the Galaxy S IV will feature a 2GHz quad-core processor and run Android’s 4.2 OS. Furthermore, the source suggests that it will come with a 4.99-inch Super AMOLED HD touchscreen, 13-megapixel rear camera and two-megapixel front camera.
While the reports are thus far unconfirmed, they do echo last year’s launch of the Galaxy S III, which saw the firm snub MWC in favour of launching the device at its own event on May 3rd 2012

Game based on sequel to Christmas classic also manages to top app store charts
The Snowman and the Snowdog game for mobiles has been downloaded over one million times in the UK between its launch on December 9th and the end of 2012.
The game, which was developed to celebrate the new sequel to Channel 4’s Christmas classic The Snowman, also topped some of app store charts over Christmas, including reaching number one in all free iPad and iPhone games. It was also released on Android.
The Snowman and The Snowdog game was created for Channel 4 by East Midlands based developer Crash Lab, which was founded by the industry veterans involved in creating TimeSplitters at Free Radical Design and Goldeneye 007 and Jet Force Gemini at Rare.
“We set out to make a game that both kids and adults would enjoy, and we got our first inkling that we may have succeeded when we heard that Raymond Briggs himself had played and enjoyed it. But for the game to go on to hit this milestone in the UK alone is just incredible,†said Crash Lab managing director Steve Ellis.
Channel 4’s commissioning editor for games Colin Macdonald added: “We wanted a beautiful game to accompany a beautiful film and I’m absolutely delighted so many people have enjoyed the experience of both. I’ve been genuinely moved by many of the 6,000+ reviews players have posted of the game in app stores.â€

Following news that a Java 0-day has been rolled into exploit kits, without any patch to fix the vulnerability, Mozilla and Apple have blocked the latest versions of Java on Firefox and Mac OS X respectively. Mozilla has taken steps to protect its user base from the yet-unpatched vulnerability. Mozilla has added to its Firefox add-on block-list: Java 7 Update 10, Java 7 Update 9, Java 6 Update 38 and Java 6 Update 37. Similar steps have also been taken by Apple; it has updated its anti-malware system to only allow version 1.7.10.19 or higher, thereby automatically blocking the vulnerable version, 1.7.10.18."Here are some ways to disable Java, if you're not sure how.

During the fourth quarter of 2012, Nokia sold 4.4 million Lumia smartphones—a significant rise from the previous quarter, which featured sales of 2.9 million Lumia devices. The Lumia line runs Microsoft's Windows Phone operating system, which largely replaced Symbian as Nokia's smartphone software of choice. Despite that shift and Nokia's emphasis on Windows Phone, however, the company still sold 2.2 million Symbian smartphones during the quarter. The question remains whether Nokia should have gone with Windows Phone in the first place, or embraced an alternate platform such as Android; an anti-Elop camp has emerged in recent months, arguing that Symbian was still a viable platform before Elop consigned it to the dustbin of tech history. For now at least, both sides seem to be right: Symbian still sells despite Nokia's attempts to take it increasingly offline, and Lumia phones are selling well. It'll take more time—perhaps a lot more time—before the ramifications of Elop's bet become clear.

Electronic Arts' mobile-focused All Play label saw out 2012 on a four-month high. After buckling under the weight of demand on its initial release, The Simpsons: Tapped Out relaunched on the iOS App Store in August, made a dash for the upper reaches of the top-grossing charts, and has since refused to budge. In October, it was the highest grossing game in the world for four straight weeks, attracting 2.8 million DAUs at its peak, and rounding out the month with a Treehouse of Terror pack that was played by more people than watched the TV series' own Halloween special. It's in the top-grossing chart right now, in fact, sandwiched between Clash of Clans and Hay Day in third place.
Popcap's admirable back-catalogue aside, The Simpsons: Tapped Out is one of EA's most significant mobile hits since its very public transition to digital began. Other EA products can be found among the App Store's most lucrative games - FIFA Soccer 13 is in fifth place, for example - but Tapped Out is particularly important because it is free. According to Nick Earl, senior vice president and general manager of All Play, from here on the £2.99 being charged for FIFA will be a rarity.
"EA sees mobile as the tip of the spear, the key growth area for our digital strategy"
"EA sees mobile as the tip of the spear," Earl says, "the key growth area for our digital strategy.
"For the most part [it will be free-to-play]. There will be some exceptions here and there, where it just makes sense to offer a one-time paid download, but for all intents and purposes freemium is what we're doing going forward. From here, you'll really see freemium rule the day.
"Freemium games are really driving our direction from a business model perspective. We're huge believers in the model. Not only is it here to stay, it's also really going to power the spread of mobile devices."
Successes like All Play's Tapped Out and The Sims Free Play have strengthened that resolve. In relative terms, EA entered the mobile gaming market during its pre-history, acquiring Jamdat for $680 million several years before the existence of either iOS or the App Store. It was a lot of money back then, and it still sounds like a lot of money now, but it enabled EA to become what Earl terms "king of the hill" of premium priced mobile games. What we now know is that there was another, much bigger hill just beyond premium, and EA was slow in staking a new claim. According to Earl, that changed in 2012.

Google has a tendency to post minor Android updates on devices and timetables we wouldn't entirely expect. We might just be witnessing a repeat: both Brazil's Adrenaline and Malaysia's Lowyat.net claim to have seen newly shippingNexus 4s with an as yet unannounced Android 4.2.2. What's new in the extra 0.0.1's worth of code isn't immediately evident, although the update (if real) isn't known to be rolling out as a separate upgrade for existing devices. We've reached out to Google for comment; let us know if you see any 4.2.2-based surprises in the interim.

It's no secret that iOS mobile gaming leaves us wanting when it comes to physical controls. Fortunately, at CES 2013, iFrogzis out to fill that void with the Caliber Advantage iPhone case-gone-console. The Caliber Advantage, an iPhone 5 and fifth-generation iPod touch accessory, uses Bluetooth 4.0 to connect to the corresponding enabled application rather than the phone itself. iFrogz mentions that a deal with Epic Games and Chair Entertainment to build the basis for the Caliber software powered by the Unreal Engine is in the works. In fact, later this April the company will host its own developer conference aimed at seriously expanding the platform and hopefully adding support for previously released titles. Marrying a case with a full-fledged controller certainly adds some bulk, but after handling the prototype, the approximate half inch of added girth honestly didn't incite any ill feelings. The chassis, while clearly heavy on the plastic, felt more sturdy than anticipated, and fairly natural to our hands. As for the buttons? Crisp and responsive, hard though that may be to believe. The unit is set to retail at $70, and curious iOS gamers can feel free to take a closer look in the gallery below.

New rumours about Apple devices have surfaced which indicate there may be a fifth gen iPad as well as an iPad mini 2 released in March.
Analyst Brian White claims the iPad 5 will be lighter and thinner than the iPad 4, while a mini 2 is expected to sport the same frame but with updated components.
The news will likely incense those that have recently purchased an Apple tablet, what with half of iPad 3 owners left fuming about the October iPad 4 release – just seven months after its predecessor.
Apple recently dismissed claims that it is working on a budget iPhone, but White believes that Apple will launch new iPhones in different sizes and colours in May or June.

Apple has cut its iPhone 5 component orders by half due to ‘weaker-than-expected’ demand, reports WSJ.
People ‘familiar with the situation’ told WSJ that Apple’s orders of iPhone 5 screens for the January-March quarter dropped by half of what the company had previously planned to order.
Also the company has cut orders for a number of other iPhone 5 components, which have not been specified yet, suggesting that the sales of the firm’s latest smartphone haven’t been as strong as expected.
Released back in September, the iPhone 5 has been in direct competition with Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S3 device. Analysts predict that Samsung will increase its lead of Apple by growing its smartphone sales by 35 per cent this year. In Q3 2012, Apple held 14.6 per cent of worldwide smartphone shipments, down from a peak of 23 per cent in Q4 2011 and Q1 of 2012.

Developers recently submitted 15,000 BlackBerry 10 apps in less than two days during a virtual Community Port-a-Thon event, RIM (Research In Motion) has reported.
The event, which began on January 11th, saw developers rewarded with $100 for each eligible mobile game or app approved for the new BlackBerry 10. Those who successfully put forward between five and ten apps received a BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha device.
Meanwhile, the first ten developers to submit ten approved apps were rewarded with a paid trip to BlackBerry Jam Europe, which will be held in Amsterdam in February.
"37.5 hours in, we hit 15,000 apps for this portathon," tweeted BlackBerry Development Head Alec Saunders. "Feel like I've run a marathon."
The BlackBerry 10, which runs on the same QNX-based software that powers RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, will be officially unveiled on January 30th.

Europe’s iPhone 5 users have developed an almost insatiable appetite for data, with many gorging on up to four-times the amount consumed by those still using an iPhone on a 3G network.
A new study by data analysis company Arieso saw over one million smartphone users on European 3G networks monitored over 24 hours to measure the demand for data. Its results showed that iPhone 5 users sought 50 per cent more data than iPhone 4S users.
"One iPhone 5 user is effectively worth about 4 iPhone 3G users," said report author Michael Flanagan.
The study also showed an increase in the amount of data uploaded to social networking sites, with Flanagan stating that this data now represented one sixth of the amount of data downloaded as opposed to one seventh last year.
With regard to the average amount of data generated and uploaded by a device, Samsung’s Galaxy S III was placed just ahead of the iPhone.

Microsoft has filed a patent for a mobile technology called Inconspicuous Mode, aimed at helping you not be 'that guy' who disrupts movies, meals, or meetings with noisy, bright-screened phone alerts. It's a setting that would effectively put your phone in stealth mode when the device sensed it was in a movie theater (thanks to location information) and that the lights had gone down. The idea is, you could still receive alerts if a call or text came in, but no one around you would be disturb by phone sounds or screen flashes.

Analysts have said that Apple is likely to move to refreshing its iPad line-up twice per year instead of just once.
According to Digital Spy, Brian White of analyst firm Topeka Capital Markets said he was told by industry sources at CES that the fifth gen iPad and the second gen iPad Mini would both be launched in March this year.
He added that his sources said that there would still be another product launch in October, as there was last year, leading him to speculate at a twice-yearly refresh.
However, it is debateable whether or not this strategy will pay off, as the double launch seen last year angered a large number of Apple fans, many of whom like to be seen as having the latest device.

Budget smartphone line significantly outperforming manufacturer’s premium handset.
The demand for budget smartphones appears to be on the rise, after Nokia’s recently published quarterly results revealed that its cheaper Asha device is outselling its flagship Lumia handset at a rate of more than two-to-one.
Nokia’s quarterly figures showed that of the 14 million Lumia and Asha smartphones sold, only 4.4 million were made up of the premium device.
The growing demand for less expensive smartphones recently sparked rumours that Apple is planning to introduce a more affordable iPhone model to the market in the near future.
Ian Fogg, principal analyst at IHS, told the BBC: "We forecast that by 2016, 31 per cent of the global overall handset market will be low-end smartphone.
"An entry-level smartphone is very different from a high-end smartphone," he explained. “Smaller, cheaper devices have processors from two or three years ago, they have small screens with low resolution, and weaker cameras. They can all do email and the web but gaming and browsing is a much better experience on the higher end phones."
In the UK, entry-level smartphones are available from as little as £29.00, while at the higher end of the market, Apple’s iPhone 5 retails for around £529. And with Apple operating at the premium end of the spectrum, one certainly wonders whether it would be wise for the firm to make the move into lower-cost devices.
"Apple makes high quality products, it doesn't make cheap products," Fogg added. "That doesn't rule out Apple creating a cheaper iPhone that still has high quality components. Look at the iPod range - they started with a premium price product, then they added the mini, the Nano, the shuffle - they went to a range of products hitting different price points."

Featured spot in prime-time advert up for grabs for winning app
Microsoft has launched a contest for Windows Phone 8 which gives developers the chance to get their app featured on a televised advert.
Next App Star is designed to help give developers more visibility and attract more customers by being advertised on a “prime-time†commercial in the US.
The contest is open to developers around the world, with the deadline for registered developers to opt-in through the dev centre ending on March 5th. The contest is open to apps already released and those published before the deadline.
App submissions will be judged on an “equal weighing†of user ratings and app quality, as well as the implementation of new Windows Phone 8 features such as Live Tiles.
Once the deadline passes, 64 apps will be put head-to-head in a public vote over the following several weeks, which will gradually narrow the number of choices to 32, 16, 8, 4, 2 and then the winner.
Prizes up for grabs include cash, a Nokia Lumia 920 Windows Phone and a one-year free Dev Centre subscription – with the winner gaining a place in the Microsoft advert.

News of a decline in demand for iPhone has seen Apple’s share price fall to its lowest point in nearly a year.
Apple’s share price fell 3.6 per cent to $501.75 yesterday – a 28 per cent fall since its September 2012 high.
Bloomberg reports that Apple has ordered just half of the 65m iPhone 5 displays it had originally targeted for this quarter and last month cut its production by 30 per cent.
However, JP Morgan analyst Mark Moskowitz claims that the alteration to orders “may also be due to suppliers becoming more adept at building the latest iPhone, reducing the need for Apple to order excess partsâ€.
Added Moskowitz: “The bigger message related to any potential order cuts could be that iPhone 5 manufacturing yields and thereby gross margin are on the rebound.â€
That’s not to say Apple isn’t facing a tough fight in the months ahead, however.
Atlantic Equities Service analyst James Cordwell stated: “We’re getting close to saturation. The real growth is going to come from emerging markets, and Apple’s share in emerging markets is much lower than it is in other markets at the moment due to such high prices.â€
Apple is rumoured to be readying a lower-spec budget version of the iPhone which it will reveal in the summer.

Square Enix has launched a new teaser site for a new game announcement planned for January 17 - this Thursday.
The site simple shows the date surrounded by silhouettes of character sprites.Kotaku has discovered, embedded in the site's source code, a link to an iTunes app page for a 'Final Fantasy: All the Bravest', which not only seemingly confirms Apple iOS as the platform, but also coincides with the site's URL, which contains the characters 'ff_atb'.
Long-time fans of the series may also recognise the sprites as characters from Final Fantasy V and VI which, along with the game's subtitle, suggests a new Final Fantasy game that draws characters from multiple titles.
Square Enix registered domain names and filed a trademark application for a project called 'All The Bravest' back in November last year.
Expect all the details to be revealed on Thursday.

SamMobile.com has allegedly leaked images of an invite to Samsung Mobile Unpacked 2013 and suggests a more specific launch date of March 4th.
The site claims it had been given a tip-off from a Samsung insider revealing that the new smartphone will feature a 2GHz quad-core processor and run on Android 4.2, although other rumours suggest that the phone will run on Samsung’s new Tizen OS and include the newly introduced Exynos 5 Octa processor.

Londoners would be well advised to keep their wits about them when using their mobiles in public, after the Metropolitan Police found that an average of around 160 phones are stolen every day.
The findings show that 56,680 mobile phones were stolen between April and September in 2012, which, when broken down, reveal that an average of 79 iPhones and 157 mobiles in total were stolen each day.
Mobile phones are now the most common stolen item, making up for 70 per cent of belongings taken in muggings. And what’s more, these figures show no sign of falling, after it was revealed last month that 9,751 mobile phone offences were committed. This number is also set to rise this month, with the Metropolitan Police indicating that these kinds of offences tend to rise in January when compared to December.
The findings coincide with the launch of a new advertising campaign aimed at warning the public of the risks of personal robberies.
Simon Letchford, detective chief superintendent, said: “We’re trying to make people think differently about this campaign – having your personal possessions on show gives robbers a chance to make easy money. If you are a victim, you may lose things that have a personal value to you and which can’t always be replaced, in addition to the cost of replacing items.
“While we continue to work to reduce these offences there are a number of practical steps you can take to help protect yourself – including videos and advice tips we have made available via our MPS website – and would urge the public to view these.â€

The entire Galaxy lineup pushes Samsung - and Android - forward
[h=3]Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.[/h]
Samsung Electronics recently announced that its flagship Android smartphone, the Galaxy S III, has sold over 40 million units since its launch in Summer 2012. The company says the phone currently has average daily sales of 190,000 units.
The entire Galaxy S product line has sold 100 million units for Samsung. The Galaxy S III's predecessor, the Galaxy S II, hit sales of over 40 million units in 20 months on the market.
In contrast, demand for Apple's iPhone 5 may be lower than previous models, according to reports from the Wall Street Journal, Nikkei, and the New York Times. All three outlets cite Apple's cutbacks on screen orders for the latest iPhone. The news has sent Apple's stock tumbling down to a closing price of $485.92 today, down 3.15 percent. The company is expected to share official earnings numbers on January 23.
Research firm Strategy Analytics expects that this will be the year of Samsung ascendant, with estimates of 320 million Samsung smartphones shipped in 2013 versus 180 million iPhones. Kiwoon Securities analyst Kim Sung-in told Reuters that he expects the number of Samsung phones sold to reach 320 million, with tablet sales doubling to 32 million units.

For those who haven't yet found a reason to check out the three-month old PlayStation Mobile store, Sony's got a rather compelling one for ya: freebies. Starting today, one game will be available gratis every seven days as part of a "New Year giveaway," which will last six weeks in total. To obtain the complimentary titles, you'll need either a Vita, or a device that's been PS-Certified -- an honor currently bestowed upon several Sony slates, a bunch of Xperia and Sharp handsets, and HTC's One series Android phones. Samurai Beatdown is the first cross-platform game to lose its price tag, so if you've got rhythm, hack and slash your way over to the PlayStation Mobile store to get downloading.

Shortly after blaming video games for the Sandy Hooks shooting the NRA released an iOS shooting game that bore the disconcerting age rating of 4+. After much hullabaloo, Apple has changed the age rating to 12+ for "frequent/intense realistic violence." NRA Shooting Range, no longer deemed appropriate for four year olds.
New York senator Charles Schumer felt that despite skipping the 9+ age rating entirely, the new restrictions weren't high enough. "Apple did the right thing by acknowledging that this game isn't for young children, but should go farther and make the restrictions as tight as possible," said Schumer to CBS News. "The NRA has acted in an unbelievably hypocritical fashion by blaming the nation's gun violence on video games and movies, then coming out with a game for children featuring assault weapons. Apple should not facilitate children using it."Let's not get carried away here; the next rating up is 17+ followed by "no rating." The game may be a steaming pile, but content-wise you're not doing more than shooting inanimate objects. As it turns out, Schumer isn't the only New York politician outraged by this app. New York mayor Michael Bloomberg said, "It is the height of hypocrisy. If you remember the head of the NRA's speech on television, he blamed violent children's games for causing things like the terrible tragedy in Connecticut.""One month and one day or maybe one month to the day, the NRA comes up with its own violent app. I don't know what else to say. I don't know how to describe it. The PR, the stupidity of doing it, is just mind-boggling," he added. On the other end of the spectrum is former Speaker of the House and Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich who told CBS This Morning "My understanding is that it is a gun safety app and that it's for young hunters to learn gun safety," he said. "I would recommend people watch the entire app before they render judgment."

Final Fantasy All The Bravest is a chaotic, combat-focused RPG coming to iOS tomorrow, January 17, priced at $3.99. The New Zealand App Store description describes continuous fights with enemies based on the series' Active Time Battle staple, and as the trailer above shows these fights involve character-stuffed parties, with as many as 40 party members taking on enemies at once. It's a good thing attacking is simply done via taps or drags across multiple characters. Another twist comes via 'Fever,' an event that occurs once every three hours and, when activated, lets you attack without waiting for ATB gauges to fill.
All The Bravest features 20 progress-unlockable characters, all based on series jobs like Thief, Blue Mage, and Knight. There are a further 35 'Premium' series characters such as Cloud from FF7 available via in-app purchases, priced $0.99 each. In a cheeky move, each purchase provides you with a new character at random, meaning it might take more than a few goes if you're after a specific one. You can also purchase additional stages based on areas from Final Fantasy 7, 10, and 13, available as 'World Tickets' for $3.99.
All The Bravest features 30 songs from the series, most of which unsurprisingly are battle themes, as well as leaderboards and social networking options. We've reached out to Square Enix for further details on the game and its release in other regions.

Google’s Nexus 7 tablet outsold Apple’s entire iPad lineup in Japan throughout December.
This is the first time another tablet has dislodged the iPad from the number one spot since the first model’s launch in 2010.
Research from BCN shows that the Asus-made Nexus 7 took 44.4 per cent of the market in December, while Apple managed 40.1 per cent.
The report cites cost as a major factor for Japanese consumers, with the Nexus 7 costing around $100 less than a comparable iPad mini.
Around 3.6 million tablets were sold in Japan during December, nearly three times as much as the same period in 2011.

Phablet – a phone/tablet hybrid – has become an industry term for a smartphone sporting a five-inch screen or larger, and IHS iSuppli says shipments of said devices will hit 60.4 million in 2013. That's equivalent to a 136 per cent year-on-year growth on the 25.6 million shipments made last year.
The data comes following last week's CES, which sawHuawei debut an enormous 6.1-inch Ascend Mate smartphone, just 2cm shy of measuring the same length as a Kindle Fire tablet.
Vinita Jakhanwal, director of small and medium displays at IHS iSuppli, said: "The move to offer larger-display smartphones reflects the efforts of both device and panel makers to differentiate their products.
"With consumers demanding more lifelike viewing experiences, the trend to offer such devices makes perfect sense, especially considering the increase in rich content that is being made available on smartphones."

It's been nearly two weeks since Apple made its 15-inch next-generation MacBook Pro available as a refurb and now the 13-inch model's ready to follow suit. Listed on the company's online storefront today, iFans averse to full retail pricing can now snag the base model with a 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5, 4GB RAM and a 500GB HDD for $1,019 (about $180 less). That's if you hate your eyes, but have slightly more respect for your wallet. Or... or you can go for the gloss and get the Retina model with the same processor setup, 8GB RAM and a 128GB SSD (configurations of up to 512GB also available) for $1,439 -- so long as you're willing to pay more of a premium. However it shakes down for you, there's no denying you're in store for savings and the pleasures of a product that's almost brand new.

AtnSnes is Snes9x emulator for Symbian. It is actually based on DrPocketSNES version 6.4.4, which in turn is based on snes9x 1.39
The Symbian days are over for me, and I finally uploaded the app into the Nokia store The Nokia QA guys didn’t like the mario icon, so I had to remove it, and use crappier icon instead. This version should work with all Symbian Anna & Bellle phones.
What’s new
- new crappy icon, since the mario icond didn’t pass nokia QA

- now avaiable in nokia store
Known issues:
- Mounted shares(Dropbox etc.) breaks the filemanger, so do not use mounted shares.
- Does not work on Nokia 500, since it doesn’t have GPU.

LG has revealed that its Flagship Optimus G smartphone has sold over one million units in four months.
While the company is optimistic about growth in 2013, the one million Optimus G sales puts the device significantly behind its rivals, the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Apple iPhone 5.
LG expects to sell 45 million smartphones in 2013, although this could be a challenge seeing as the company only sold seven million in Q3 of 2012.
The iPhone 5 managed to ship two million units in just the first weekend of mainland sales in China alone. LG may have some way to go before its smartphone range reaches that kind of hype, but Nexus 4 sales should help the firm claw closer to its 45 million sales target.

Often referred to as the godfather of the iPod, former Apple executive and current Nest CEO Tony Fadell played an instrumental part in Apple's resurgence. Recently, Fadell opined on what makes Apple's design process different from the rest of the pack. Fadell explained that a key and yet often overlooked, difference between Apple and other tech companies is that Apple ships 99% of the products that pass certain internal milestones. By way of contrast, during Fadell's tenure at Philips — where he was charged with overseeing the company's audio strategy — the iPod guru noted that Philips would axe 9 projects out of 10, even if a particular product was about to ship.

Imangi Studios caught us off guard with the out-of-nowhere launch of Temple Run 2 on iOS, but what's the word on the Android version?
The developer told Polygon that the wait won't be long for Android users, with the company intending to launch the sequel to the hit infinite runner on Google Play and the Amazon Appstore.
The developer made it clear that the date still needs to be finalized, adding “with these things, you never know.â€
Temple Run 2 launched earlier this week for Apple's tablets and phones via the iTunes App Store.

Opera has been in the mobile web browser game for some time now, but it looks like it's set to soon shake things up considerably. As detailed in an internal video obtained byPocket-lint, the company has been working on an all-new mobile browser dubbed "Ice," which ditches the company's own Presto engine in favor of WebKit (bringing it in line with the likes of Safari and Chrome). What's more, Ice looks to fully embrace a touch interface optimized for smartphones and tablets, with gestures replacing buttons and icons on a central home screen replacing tabs. You can apparently look for it to land on both Android and iOS sometime in February, with a new desktop version of Opera set to follow in March (details on it are comparatively light). Head on past the break for some highlights from the video.

Pate has posted some new WIP news of his DOS emulator for the Android, whats Dos you ask well its a way of playing old PC games via emulation, damn cool really
Heres his newspost:
During the past two weeks I have been working on the Mode-X and EGA graphics mode support. I got Mode-X support working already last weekend. As soon as I got the most common Mode-X graphics mode opcodes implemented, I wanted to see whether Doom would run in ax86. The first problem I ran into with Doom was that it tried to detect the type of the floating point coprocessor. This is part of the DOS4GW initialization routines, so even though Doom itself does not use floating point operations, the DOS extender wanted to detect the FPU type. I have not yet added any floating point support into ax86, so I had to add some hacks to simply bypass those FPU operations that DOS4GW uses. This allowed Doom to progress slightly further.
The next problem was that Doom complained "Not enough available XMS memory", which was a bit weird since I had allocated (or so I thought) 16MB of RAM for XMS emulation. After some debugging it turned out that I had made a silly mistake, I meant to allocate 16MB of memory but I only allocated 16KB of memory for the XMS emulation! No wonder that was not enough for Doom to run. Next I ran into an unsupported protected mode far call opcode. I had not implemented all protected mode opcodes when I ported the 386 features from DS2x86 to the Raiden Legacy core, and this was one of those unimplemented versions. Implementing it was pretty easy, but then I ran into a more difficult problem.
I fought the whole of last Saturday with a weird problem where protected mode SS (stack segment) register got an invalid value. I used both my DS2x86 and DOSBox to help me in checking what the correct value should be, but the problem was that those two did not even call the routine where this invalid SS value problem happened! So, this was obviously some more serious and difficult to find problem in my code. After a considerable amount of backtracking I finally found a routine that does get called, and was then able to follow the program flow and see where the code paths differ. Finally I found the problem. There are five similar opcodes that load both a segment register and a general purpose register simultaneously. These are called LES, LDS, LSS, LFS and LGS. I had separate 16-bit and 32-bit handlers for each of those, but for some peculiar reason the 16-bit LDS handler did not have the protected mode code at all! I don't quite understand how and why I could have skipped implementing that, but at least doing that fixed the problem in Doom.
After fixing that I ran into an architectural problem that was caused by my using statically allocated first megabyte of RAM, but a dynamically allocated XMS memory block. This caused those two memory blocks not to be adjacent, which in turn caused problems in some of my memory handlers. I decided to have all my emulated RAM be dynamically allocated (as there is no proper reason why any of it should be statically allocated), and fixing that let Doom to start up and run the demo games fine!

Analyst Peter Misek believes that iPhone 6 is preparing to enter production ahead of its release in June/July.
Jefferies analyst Misek told investors in a note this week that Apple is testing two new iPhone prototypes. This coincides with a number of rumours suggesting there will be an iPhone 6/5S as well as a budget/mini smartphone released by Apple this year.
Misek predicts that the next gen iPhone will be 0.8-inches bigger than the latest model, which would give it a 4.8-inch screen.
"Similar to the iPad mini, we expect a concentrated low-cost iPhone rather than a 'cheap' one. Likely specs: polycarbonate case with 4in non-Retina display and no LTE," said MIsek.
At the beginning of the year, PCR reported that there were a number of reports indicating that Apple’s next iPhone device was already in use and running a future version of its iOS software.

Samsung has announced that an NFC-enabled version of the Galaxy S3 Mini will be available across all major networks in the UK from the end of January.
Powered by Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, the S3 Mini includes S Voice, which enables people to tell the phone to wake up, answer an incoming call, or even take a photo. Also featured is S Beam, which allows a 10MB music file to be shared in just two seconds. By combining NFC with Wi-Fi Direct, S Beam is capable of sending larger files between phones.
Simon Stanford, vice president, Telecommunications & Networks, Samsung UK and Ireland said: “NFC technology and the digital wallet started to gain significant traction in 2012, particularly in the run up to the Olympics. It’s an exciting time in the mobile market watching the next phase of its evolution take shape, so we’re happy to announce that we are bringing these new experiences to our customers through our growing number of NFC-enabled devices.â€
Samsung has also unveiled its latest advert for the Galaxy Note 2 and S3 devices, which takes a dig at Blackberry devices.
Set within the offices of a fictional game developer, the ad shows shots of Blackberry devices being frowned upon by most of the staff.

Galaxy Note 10.1 and Galaxy Tab 2 get latest version of Android operating system.
Google’s Android 4.1 operating system, a.k.a. Jelly Bean, is coming to Samsung’s Galaxy Note 10.1 and Galaxy Tab 2 tablets.
The best-selling Samsung tablets will also come with Premium Suite, which Samsung says will offer “dramatic improvements†to both the tablets’ multi-tasking features, along with improvements to the S Pen stylus.
The Galaxy Note 10.1’s Multi Window view now facilitates the new Cascade View feature, that is aimed to allow users to easily resize, move and pin applications in multiple views, running them at the same time or while operating the home screen.
Elsewhere, Air View enables the user to preview content, without having to open the related apps, while the new Quick Command feature offers users the ability to create and preset shortcuts for the S Pen.
The Galaxy’s handwriting software has also been improved, letting users send handwritten notes over email and hand-write directly in the S Planner.

German site TelekomPresse has gotten its hands on the BlackBerry Z10, a touchscreen smartphone that is particularly similar to Apple's iPhone 5.
In a demonstration video, the tech site shows off the Z10 and its Siri-like voice control functionality, which parallels the Siri technology used on the iPhone 5 in both form and function.
Initial impressions of the two devices show a number of differences, with the Z10 packing a 4.2-inch screen that belittles the four-inch display of the iPhone.
Meanwhile, both devices place a power button on the top of its frame, whilst volume controls are placed on opposite sides of the devices.
Unlike the iPhone, which has often been criticised for its limited connectivity options, the Z10 incorporates both USB and HDMI connection on the left side of its frame.

After announcing its flagship Xperia Z smartphone at CES, Sony has unveiled a new tablet sharing some of the features of its smaller counterpart.
Sony’s new super-slim, 6.9mm thick tablet is both waterproof and dust-proof, just like the smartphone, and shares the same design scheme as well.
The Sony Xperia Z tablet has a 10.1-inch 1920 x 1200 screen, Android 4.1, Qualcomm 1.5GHz quad-core APQ8064 processor, 2GB RAM and 32GB of storage.
Supporting both NFC and LTE, the tablet comes with an 8.1MP Exmor R camera with (according to Sony) the first ever backside illuminated sensor to be put in a tablet.
At 6.9mm thick and weight just 945g, the Xperia Z seems to be the thinnest tablet made so far, beating the iPad mini by around 3mm.

Samsung could be set to unveil a new eight-inch version of its Galaxy Note tablet at next month’s MWC 2013 in Barcelona.
Mobile Magazine reported that Samsung’s IT and mobile communications chief JK Shin confirmed the mid-sized device in an interview with Korean publication iNews24.
The tablet, which is likely to include Samsung’s S Pen stylus, would go head to head in the market with Apple’s 7.9-inch iPad Mini.
However, while the latest version of the Galaxy Note looks certain to make an appearance at MWC 2013, the Korean manufacturer is set to forgo the Barcelona show for the release of its Galaxy S IV, which is rumoured to be launched on March 4th.

The Windows Phone 8 operating system has shown encouraging signs of growth over the past 12 months, having trebled its market share in the UK.
Sales of Nokia and HTC devices have played a significant role in boosting the uptake for Windows Phone 8. HTC’s 8S and 8X smartphones have proved to be particularly popular, with initial supplies unable to meet demand.
However, the Windows phone 8 OS still runs on just 5.9 per cent of smartphones in the UK, according to figures from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.
The crown for the UK’s most popular operating system continues to sit with Android, with 54.4 per cent market share, while Apple comes in at second with 32.4 per cent market share.
Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director at Kantar, said: :Among the handset manufacturers, Samsung has held onto the number one spot in Britain, claiming 35% of smartphone sales, although Apple is now biting at its heels with 32%. Nokia is experiencing something of a turnaround in Britain with its smartphone share at 6.2% and actual sales growing by over 50% compared with last year. Meanwhile, BlackBerry continues to find trading tough in the run up to the BlackBerry 10 release; however, its 9320 handset gave it a boost over Christmas with two-thirds bought as gifts.â€

2012 saw 359,764 new apps released into the App Store.
2013 can expect to see more than 435,000 new apps reach Apple’s App Store, mobile analytics and ad verification firm adeven has predicted.
Figures made available via adeven’s free online tool – apptrace.com – revealed that 559,764 new apps were released into the App Store last year, with November boasting the biggest number of new releases (39,313) and July being the slowest with just 22,483.
Elsewhere, adeven’s review of 2012 revealed that pricey apps in the region of $999 doubled, with 16 of the currently available 38 hitting the market last year.
Meanwhile, ‘zombie apps’ were also on the rise last year, particularly in December, with 64 per cent of apps not securing a ranking for most of the month. This represents a significant rise on June’s 60 per cent, indicating a growing competitive element in the App Store for an app to rank and be noticed.
Via apptrace’s sentiment analysis, Work Seek HD by Idealix was crowned as the all time most addictive app, with a rating of 54.5 per cent across all versions and a current version rating of 46 per cent.
The most positively reviewed app was Zulily by Zulily, which won with a positive rating of 85.6 per cent across all versions, with a current version rating of 90 per cent.
“We reviewed App Store results over the past five years and noticed a steady linear increase in the number of App Store apps, indicating that there will be over 435,000 new apps in the App Store by the end of 2013,†said Christian Henschel, CEO, adeven. “Naturally anything could happen to the industry, but we think these numbers are a fair prediction and an indication of the continued growth in the industry.â€

Pocket Edition downloaded 7.3m times on iOS and Android
The Minecraft craze shows little signs of slowing as total sales for the title have now surpassed 20 million.
Revealing the news on Twitter, Mojang developer Jens Bergensten said that the PC version of the world-building title alone had sold nine million copies.
Sales of Minecraft Pocket Edition for Android and iOS meanwhile have risen to 7.3m, having been downloaded 5,899,727 since it was released.
This means that since the start of January, the game has been downloaded around 1.4 million times.
Mojang recently also revealed impressive 2012 sales of 15 million, selling 1.2 during the Christmas week alone.

For quite some time Mozilla has been working on Firefox OS, a lightweight mobile OS built in HTML5. Now it's whipped the curtain back from the first developer preview phones. The developer preview phones are unlocked, requiring the user insert their own SIM card. If those specs seem a little underpowered compared to other smartphones on the market, it's because Firefox OS is intended for lower-end smartphones; target markets include developing countries such as Brazil and China. (The first developer preview phones will be available in February.) The Firefox OS (once known as 'Boot to Gecko') is based on a handful of open APIs. The actual interface is highly reminiscent of Google Android and Apple iOS, with grids of icons linked to applications."The specs really aren't that bad; reader sfcrazy points out that they include the usual features baked into medium- and high-end phones these days: Wifi N, light and proximity sensors, and an accelerometer (though no mention of NFC).

An unofficial, but fully functional release of XBMC should make the uber-popular media center software work with almost all Android devices. About six months ago the developers of XBMC announced that it had been ported for Android. That was true, but there was one caveat. The port was made functional on one specific Android device. The hardware company Pivos paid for the devs to add support for their Xios DS device. Although that build could be run on other Android devices, the hardware video acceleration could only be use if it was the same as the Xios. When not using the hardware acceleration many common video formats would only play at a few frames per second, if at all.
This build is a workaround and is not officially supported. What it brings to the table is the ability to use an external media player with XBMC. This way any video format which your Android device is capable of playing (with hardware acceleration) can be launched from XBMC but will be played by the native video application. We haven’t tried it for ourselves. If you have we’d love to hear about your experience in the comments.

Despite all the nightly builds of CyanogenMod 10.1, there hasn't been much of anything definitive to hang our hats on. There's at last some sense of reliability now that Milestone 1 versions have hit the servers. Most Nexus devices, as well as swaths of Samsung's Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab 2 ranges, can get the unofficial Android 4.2 build for themselves. The M1 code is deemed "mostly stable" and good enough for daily use, although that's relative -- it's not yet to the level of a fully stable build, let alone factory firmware. If you only needed fewer risks than before, though, the downloads and details await at the source links.

Mobile platform engineer Chris Lord has revealed that Mozilla is working on a version of its Firefox browser for the Ouya Android gaming console.
Lord tweeted a screenshot of the browser running on Ouya, saying: “#Firefox on #Ouya – kinda unusable atm.â€
The engineer elaborated on this when speaking to OuyaForum.com, commenting: “It already works and we have some preliminary patches for gamepad support, but there’s still quite a bit of work to be done to make it really usable.â€
Ouya is an android-based gaming system that plugs into a television set, enabling the user to play Android games and apps.
The gaming console runs on a Tegra 3 quad-core processor and is set to launch in April.

More than 435,000 apps are set to hit the App Store in 2013, but will anyone notice them? Based on new research from mobile marketing firm Surikate and GfK, probably not. The report says that 52.2 million visits are made to the App Store every week, yet 81 per cent of UK visitors fail to browse past the 50 first apps.
Despite being mobile, 86 per cent of users search for new apps while at home, with just 23 per cent browsing on the move, though 22 per cent also browse at work. Meanwhile, 11 per cent of iPhone users search for apps while perched on the loo.
In terms of app discovery, 82 per cent of iPhone users usually browse the top 25 on the App Store. Beyond that, two-thirds of users have found apps via recommendations from friends and family, showing the genuine importance of producing a word-of-mouth-worthy title.
Apps must have a strong presence to secure loyalty among users, with 85 per cent of App Store visitors desiring strong reviews, images, and a reasonable price before they're persuaded to download.
Jules Minvielle, Surikate’s founder and CEO, said: "Our research shows that getting an app ranked among the Top 25 or higher in the App Store Charts is crucial, as just over half of iPhone users (57 per cent) will not browse beyond the first 25 applications."
Key stats:
* 6: is the average number of times a user accesses the App Store every week
* 6 to 9 pm: is the peak time for visitors on the App Store
* Top 25: is the place to be if you want your app to be discovered
* 75% of iPhone users claim they download apps they did not previously know about having discovered them in the Top 25 / Top Charts
* 11.5 minutes: average length of a user’s visit
* 30 or less: the number of apps an average user has on their phone (excluding those pre-installed on their iPhone)

This cheap and easy hack will let you . [Xobmo] built the connector for just 55 cents. Apart from our concerns about scratching the lens when inserting the phone in the bracket we love the idea.
He was given the Celestron Powerseeker 70AZ as a gift from his wife last Christmas. He looked around the Internet and saw that there are already some solutions for recording video using an iPhone 3GS. This design on Thingiverse would be perfect, but he doesn’t have access to a 3D printer and ordering it form a service would cost almost $50. But when he got to thinking about it, all he needed was a ring to fit on the telescope and a way to connected the iPhone to it. He headed down to the hardware store and picked up a PVC coupler. After working with a hack saw and drill he ended up with a slot with two wings on it. Just slip the phone in and slide the ring on the eyepiece. You can see some action shots, and get a look at the mount itself, in the clip after the break.

Last time Apple bragged about the number of iOS devices it's sold, the number was 400 million. On the company earnings call today, however, Tim Cook revealed that the number of iPhones, iPads and iPods sold has surpassed the half a billion mark. To be clear, that's over 500,000,000 devices, and it means that Apple's moved a hundred million devices total since June 2012. Of those, 75 million were moved in this quarter alone. Not bad, eh?

Nokia Drive+ is still in beta but, starting today, more people can take part in the navigational fun. The app has been freed from its Lumia exclusive bonds and is now available in the US, Canada and the UK on any Windows Phone 8 device. The download is free, but it's important to keep in mind that this is still a beta product -- so we can't make any guarantees about stability or compatibility. Still, the turn-by-turn navigation and offline maps are likely a huge improvement over whatever carrier-branded substitute you've been saddled with until now. Hit up the source for a few more details and to dig up a download link.

Microsoft just announced today's release of the Windows Phone 7.8 SDK, which should be a wee bit helpful for developers wanting to test their apps and Live Tiles with the revised OS. The new SDK includes two software images (build 8858), one that simulates devices with 512MB of RAM and another for 256MB handsets. The primary purpose of this release is to let developers test their Live Tiles with Windows Phone 7.8, which supports resizable Live Tiles. While it's not much of a surprise, the new SDK includes no new APIs over the Windows Phone 7.5 SDK, which further reinforces the impression of Windows Phone 7.8 as a largely cosmetic update. On the plus side, legacy support is alive and kicking, as Microsoft promises the SDK update won't alter existing Windows Phone 7.1 emulator images. For more details of this release, be sure to hit up the source link.

Social network app trumps maps service in new report.
The Facebook social networking app has beaten Google Maps to become the number one app in the US, according to a new report from comScore.
Using the comScore Mobile Metrix, apps were measured on their monthly unique visitors and user engagement.
Following its release last month, the Google Maps app proved to be particularly popular in the US. However, it subsequently dropped to second place in the rankings after Apple introduced its own maps service.
Andrew Lipsman, vice president of Marketing & Industry Analysis, at comScore, said: "Of course Apple's decision to replace Google Maps with Apple Maps on iOS 6 also caused a decline in Google Maps usage in October, which is largely responsible for the position swap. Meanwhile, Google Maps has been clawing its way back the past few months after getting reinstated on iOS 6, so look for the competition for the No. 1 spot to heat up as we head into 2013.â€
While Google Maps may have lost out to Facebook overall, five of the top six apps in the chart came from Google, including Google Play, Google Search, Gmail and YouTube.
The report also found that Facebook made up 23 per cent of the time users spent on mobile apps.

iOS developers could be losing ground on Android competitors.
Android app revenues could be set to jump 43 per cent, according to a Distimo report.
Distimo’s global survey of app store activity during the past four months of 2012 revealed that Apple’s App Store experienced an aggregated daily revenue increase of 21 per cent, while Android revenues grew by 43 per cent.
However, the news follows reports from earlier this week that more than 435,000 new apps are primed to hit Apple’s App Store throughout 2013.
Figures made available via adeven’s free online tool – apptrace.com – revealed that 559,764 new apps were released into the App Store last year, with November boasting the biggest number of new releases (39,313) and July being the slowest with just 22,483.

Do all new smartphones really need full HD displays to be successful?
Mobile Entertainment is delighted to introduce a guest post from Phones 4u, focussing on the growing uptake for full HD screens currently sweeping the smartphone market…
The year 2013 is already shaping up to be a great one for mobile technology, with the BlackBerry 10 due to land at the end of January, flexible screens debuted by Samsung, and a number of mobiles with full HD displays unveiled at CES.
This latest trend for full HD screens on handsets is taking the mobile world by storm, with Sony’s Xperia Z, Huawei’s Ascend D2, and ZTE’s Grand S all boasting 1080p displays. But do all future smartphones need to have full HD displays to be successful?
What are ‘full HD’ displays?
High definition (HD) video and imaging offers visuals that are of a high resolution; full HD is known as 1080p. This means the display has 1920 pixels in width and 1080 pixels in height, giving a pixel count of 440ppi (pixels per inch).
Pixels are the little dots that make up a digital image, and the higher the screen resolution, the more pixels per inch the display will have. So, the greater the number of pixels, the more sharp and defined the visuals will be. A phone with a 1080p display will offer crisp, clear, and detailed images, no matter what you are looking at on the screen. It could be a video, a photo, an app, or even just a navigation menu, with 1080p displays, it’ll look pretty awesome.
Now that televisions with high definition screens adorn many a living room, people are wising up to the concept of image quality. In 2011, mobiles with 720p displays started cropping up all over the place, and it seems 2013 is all about 1080p. There are quite a few devices that already boast 1080p video recording functionality, so it makes sense that users would want to watch their videos back at the same quality on a handset.
So, do we need 1080p smartphone displays?
Some people may argue that as smartphone displays are so small, the difference in quality between a 720p and a 1080p screen is unrecognisable to the human eye. However, displays are getting bigger and bigger, and every manufacturer and his dog seems to be jumping on the phablet bandwagon of late. With displays seemingly growing in size, having 1080p as standard for smartphone screens might not be a bad thing. The difference in image quality between 720p and 1080p is certainly noticeable on tablets.
Also, when people are choosing contract phones, it’s likely that they will go for the one with the best spec sheet. So, if you have two handsets of a similar specification, but one has a 1080p display and the other a 720p screen, the full HD device will be more desirable. Side by side the screens probably provide the same visual experience (depending on their size), but you’re going to plump for the higher specced handset.
It’s worth taking into consideration the effect on battery life a 1080p display will have. Whereas tablets have more room to accommodate a larger battery, smartphones are much more restricted and so it could be that in your quest for visual quality you compromise battery life. With a lot of new smartphones now boasting quad-core processors, which will drain mobile juice even further, the choice of high specs over longevity is not one to be taken lightly.
Bright futures?
With a slew of 1080p smartphones already hitting the market, it’s likely that no manufacturer will want to be left behind, regardless of whether the inclusion of a full HD screen really benefits the user. That said, it certainly looks like there is a market for these devices as those who value having the latest tech will snap up 1080p smartphones in their droves, if only to claim bragging rights in the pub. Whether or not mobiles with 1080p displays become the norm remains to be seen, but we reckon we’ll be seeing a whole lot more of them in the coming months.

Symbian is now officially dead, Nokia confirmed today. In the company's earnings announcement that came out a little while ago, Nokia confirmed that the 808 PureView, released last year, was the very last device that the company would make on the Symbian platform: 'During our transition to Windows Phone through 2012, we continued to ship devices based on Symbian,' the company wrote. 'The Nokia 808 PureView, a device which showcases our imaging capabilities and which came to market in mid-2012, was the last Symbian device from Nokia.'"

New multiwindow, multitasking features in Samsung's recent Jellybean update to the Galaxy Note 10.1 have pushed the user interface of Android tablets into new territory, adding MS Windows-like capabilities that are sure to delight many users — and aggravate others. Although some observers have warned of the dangers of forking Android, Samsung's efforts to extend Android and its ecosystem can be defended as being consistent with Google's master plan for the Android system, most of which is released under ASLv2. And remember: unlike Apple, Android device makers, and the wireless carriers who offer Android smartphones to their customers, need ways to differentiate their products.

Ouya. Project Shield. GameStick. These headline-grabbing devices lead the wave of new Android-based consoles due this year.
These devices have plenty of hype behind them as consumers help fund some of them via Kickstarter.
The Google-owned Android platform accounts for 75 per cent of the mobile market – but in the age of smartphones and tablets does it need a presence in the console space as well?
Android Magazine editor Andy Betts told MCV: “Android is branching into new categories of product this year so it’s logical that games consoles would also be included. “The Ouya Kickstarter captured the imagination of gamers – although whether this will translate to mainstream appeal is not so clear.â€
T3 deputy editor Matt Hill added: “Ouya and GameStick are trying to democratise gaming: make it cheaper, with less barriers to entry.
“Unfortunately for them, smartphones have already democratised gaming for the mainstream and the promise of physical controls is more aimed at old-school gamers.
“It’s very hard to know where they fit in the market till the inevitable reveals of PS4 and the next Xbox later this year, and how the big boys respond to this disruptive threat.â€
However, the console market has changed. Gamers’ tighter controls on spending mean luxury items such as Wii U – not to mention the inevitably tech-heavy Xbox 720 and PS4 – are no longer guaranteed the immediate success they might have enjoyed.
CONSOLE COUNTERS
Of course, the big three have responded to the rise of smartphones and tablets – with Nintendo’s tablet-like Wii U controller an obvious example.
Sony is blurring the lines between PlayStation and its mobile offering with Xperia Play, while Microsoft has bridged the gap between Xbox and established mobile platforms with SmartGlass.
But all three still depend on costly high-end hardware for their core offering – and that’s something the cheaper Android consoles are able to take advantage of.
“That these devices are very inexpensive gives them greater casual appeal. Rather than competing with the big players, they would be complementing them,†says Betts.
GameStick co-founder Anthony Johnson adds: “We’re not trying to replace the traditional console today – at $79 we cannot – but we’re going after a huge market of a new generation of gamers.â€
We cannot judge these machines until after launch, but critics are sceptical. “As interesting as they are, I imagine Android consoles will remain niche devices for a while,†said Hill.
“While they are Android based, they don't all use the recognisable Google Play store: Ouya runs its own, as does GameStick, meaning you're signing on with a company without a track record of delivering.
“How the devices work out of the box could confuse the mainstream. Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are brands of assurance, in this aspect.â€
Herein lies the biggest challenge for Android consoles. While expectations are high for PS4 and Xbox 720 to stay relevant in the mobile-dominated world, their strong brands still guarantee a following.
Ouya, GameStick et al are starting from scratch, and it will take more than a Kickstarter and optimism to survive in the console market.

When Microsoft and Nokia married at the temple of Windows Phone last year, the dowry was nothing if not complicated. Nokia had to pay a minimum amount in software royalties to Microsoft each quarter, regardless of how many Lumia smartphones it sold, but the financial hit was more than cancelled out by Microsoft's "platform support payments" coming back the other way. At some point, however, the net flow of cash was always bound to switch direction, as the cost of the software royalties grew to exceed Redmond's $250 million quarterly support payments, effectively bringing the whole thing closer to being a zero-sum transaction. According to Nokia's latest financial report, that turning point has now been reached and the company's accountants will have to start writing a minus where there used to be a plus. The extra expense makes it doubly fortunate that Nokia has just returned to profitability -- at least if future quarters prove it really has.

Apple had a Gala Christmas, harvesting a juicy profit of $13.1 billion in three months. In that three-month period (Apple's Q1) Apple sold 47.8 million iPhones, 22.9 million iPads, 4.1 million Macs and more than 2 million Apple TVs. Tim Cook must be Smaug.
The iPad is selling at such a rate now that it could top 90 million sales in 2013, notedGamesIndustry.biz. In one year, then, the iPad could easily outstrip lifetime sales of PS3 or 360, and roughly match that of Wii.The iPhone numbers are even more ridiculous. It could do as many as 200 million sales in 2013.Apple, during the same period last year, sold 37 million iPhones, 15.4 million iPads, 5.2 million Macs and around 1.2 million Apple TVs.Apple noted that more than 40 billion apps had been downloaded (ever) and more than $7 billion paid out to developers of them. Games are top dog so presumably a lot of that money went there.Despite the overwhelming success of iDevices, Apple's stock dropped by over 10 per cent after the financial report was aired. That's because investors are worried about dwindling Mac sales.Apple's Tim Cook was "incredibly excited" about the year to come, and Apple's "very full" product pipeline it has planned.Don't look now, but Apple's cash pile is so big now - $137.1 billion (£86.6 billion) - it may need a dragon like Smaug to defend it.

See-through smartphones may no longer be the stuff of fantasy as Taiwanese firm Polytron Technologies unveils its transparent smartphone.
The smartphone prototype uses technology called ‘PowerGlass’ which provides power to a thin film located in the canter of the device. The PowerGlass is touch sensitive and displays images through the phone’s see-through body.
Consett Magazine reports: “The product is supposed to be ready for mass manufacture by the end of this year.â€
We don't really know much else about this see-through smartphone at the moment, but PCR can't wait to see what happens.

International mobile market grows 1.9 per cent year-on-year in Q4.
More than half a billion smartphones were sold across the world last year, expanding the international mobile market by 1.9 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2012.
Figures from IDC show that vendors shipped 219.4 million units in Q4, representing a record high of 45.5 per cent of all mobile phone shipments. However, the 36.4 per cent year-on-year growth fell slightly short of IDC's forecast of 39.5 per cent for the quarter.
Overall, 545.2 million smartphones were shipped globally in 2012 - 10.1 per cent more than in 2011.
"The high-growth smartphone market, though dominated by Samsung and Apple, still presents ample opportunities for challengers," said Kevin Restivo, senior research analyst with IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. "Vendors with unique market advantages, such as lower-cost devices, can rapidly gain market share, especially in emerging markets. A good example is Huawei, which overtook LG as a Top 5 vendor in the overall mobile phone market and passed HTC to become a Top 5 smartphone vendor."
"The fact that Huawei and ZTE now find themselves among the Top 5 smartphone vendors marks a significant shift for the global market," added Ramon Llamas, research manager with IDC's Mobile Phone team. "Both companies have grown volumes by focusing on the mass market, but in recent quarters they have turned their attention toward higher-end devices. In addition, both companies have pushed the envelope in terms of industrial design with larger displays and smaller form factors, as well as innovative applications and experiences."

The tech company last night reported record Q1 sales of 47.8m iPhones and 22.9m iPads. That’s up on last year’s sales of 37m and 15.4m respectively. That works out as over 800,000 iOS device sales per day.
Profit for the period hit a mind-boggling $13.1bn which is flat, although note that its Q1 last year contained an extra week. Revenue was up year-on-year from $46.3bn to $54.5bn.
As well as quashing rumours of slowing sales of iOS devices, Apple CEO Tim Cook also shot down talk of an imminent reveal for a large-screen iPhone, affirming: "Without sacrificing the one-handed ease of use, we've put a lot of thought into screen size, and we believe we've picked the right one."

Yesterday saw the release of a clip from the upcoming movie jOBS, a biopic about the life of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. The clip shows Jobs, played by Ashton Kutcher, having a conversation with Steve Wozniak, played by Josh Gad, about how influential an operating system for a personal computer would be. The real Steve Wozniak commented on the clip, saying the situation it portrayed was "totally wrong." He said, "Personalities and where the ideas of computers affecting society did not come from Jobs. They inspired me and were widely spoken at the Homebrew Computer Club. Steve came back from Oregon and came to a club meeting and didn't start talking about this great social impact. His idea was to make a $20 PC board and sell it for $40 to help people at the club build the computer I'd given away. Steve came from selling surplus parts at HalTed he always saw a way to make a quick buck off my designs (this was the 5th time). The lofty talk came much further down the line." Wozniak was quick to add that he isn't making any judgment on the quality of the movie based on a single, 1-minute clip, and that the rest of the movie may or may not be more accurate. He also says he hopes it's entertaining.

Referencing a decision outlined in the Federal Register, Tech News Daily has published an article noting that the window to unlock your new mobile phone in the U.S. is closing. 'In October 2012, the Librarian of Congress, who determines exemptions to a strict anti-hacking law called the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), decided that unlocking mobile phones would no longer be allowed. But the library provided a 90-day window during which people could still buy a phone and unlock it. That window closes on January 26.' While this doesn't apply to phones purchased before the window closes, this means that after 1/26/13, for any new mobile phone you purchase, you'll have to fulfill your contract, or break the law to unlock it."It will still be perfectly legal to purchase an unlocked phone, which many carriers offer. This change removes the exemption for buying a new phone under contract (and thus, at a discount) and then unlocking it.

Apple has stuck to its word and begun to cut ties with Chinese suppliers who are found to employ underage workers.
Apple last year joined forces with the Fair Labor Association (FLA) after a report from the organisation found evidence of the practise at some of Apple’s suppliers.
Now the company has released its Supplier Responsibility Progress Report, in which it was revealed that Apple has cut ties with Guangdong Real Faith Pingzhou Electronics (PZ) after 74 violations were discovered.
Staffing firm Shenzhen Quanshun Human Resources, which supplied workers to PZ, reportedly went as far as to aid families to produce fake age documentation. 106 active cases were revealed.
Interestingly, notorious employer Foxconn “is on track to meet the FLA's recommendations by July 1stâ€, The Verge reports.
In fact, Apple CEO Tim Cook has made a point of stressing that improved labour practices are a key priority for Apple – a notable change from the seemingly opposite policy employed by his predecessor (and Buddhist!) Steve Jobs.
The company performed 393 labour audits in 2012 – that’s a 72 per cent increase over 2011.

Well known iOS security researcher Pod2g has confirmed that a working untethered iOS 6 jailbreak is ready and would be released as soon as iOS 6.1 GM is released. In an interview with iDigitalTimes, the security researcher has revealed that they are already in possession of a functional untethered iOS 6 and iOS 6.1 beta 4 jailbreak and majority of the work has been done by @planetbeing and @pimskeks. "6.0 is jailbroken, 6.1 beta 4 also. Now we are waiting 6.1 to confirm and release," said the researcher. He said that the jailbreak would have been possible without him as he came into the iOS 6 jailbreak scene at a later stage and provided pointers that pushed the other researchers to the maximum.

Among them, some explanation of the rule-making process, the reasoning that led to the end to the unlocking exception to the DMCA (including the Ninth Circuit's 2010 Vernor v. Apple is on the ropes as customers flock from iOS to Android, right? Perhaps not.
The tech company last night reported record Q1 sales of 47.8m iPhones and 22.9m iPads. That’s up on last year’s sales of 37m and 15.4m respectively. That works out as over 800,000 iOS device sales per day.

Meanwhile, a bit of number-crunching from Business Insider suggests that the iPad Mini is eating into sales of the regular iPad. The average iPad selling price has for the first time dipped below $499 – the entry-price for full-sized iPads.
Cook admitted to investors that there has been “some cannibalization†between the pair, but insisted that the lion’s share of cannibalisation is tablets stealing from Macs and PCs.

While RIM throws checks at developers, and Steve Ballmerinvades other people's press conferences to shout about apps, the folks behind the Ubuntu smartphone project are taking a very different tack. According to Richard Collins, product manager at Canonical, the first device -- expected by early next year -- will target basic users and only run pre-installed software: "In terms of our first go-to-market product strategy, the intention is not to have an application store full of ready-made applications that are there to download. We have a very definite approach in terms of addressing a very important part of the market where users are primarily interested in being able to use a core set of applications."
Let's be clear, though: this entry-level phone will be capable of accessing a storefront for third-party apps at some point in the future. A huge part of Canonical's long-term plan is to capitalize on its relationships with developers and the fact that existing Ubuntu desktop apps should be relatively easy to port to the new breed of phones and tablets. It's just that this isn't going to be the priority to begin with. Check out our full interview with Richard Collins for more.

Data compiled by research firm Strategy Analytics revealed Samsung's success as it eclipsed its closest rival Apple, which sold just 135.8 million devices, whilst still managing to grow its own phone shipments by 46 per cent.
It follows the news that Samsung products were found to be the most recommended devices by UK retailers, as revealed by Informa Telecoms and Media.
A survey conducted by the firm over the Christmas period found that retailers in the UK recommended Samsung more than any other brand, with Apple lagging behind in second place.
The most recommended smartphones were found to be the Samsung Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2.
In light of Samsung's ascent to the leading phone provider, Nokia suffered another setback as its own shipments fell by 20 per cent to 335.6 million handsets worldwide.
Overall, the total shipments within the mobile phone market grew by 2 per cent, as a total of 1.6 billion devices were sold in 2012.
Neil Shah, senior analyst at Strategy Analytics, told the BBC: "Fuelled by robust demand for its popular Galaxy models, Samsung was the star performer, shipping a record 396.5 million mobile phones worldwide and capturing 25 per cent market share to solidify its first-place lead."

Tech site 9to5Mac has quoted an anonymous source at a US retailer, who has stated that the rumoured model, known as "premium SKU" and "Ultimate" will be offered alongside the range of iPad models currently available.
At present, the largest capacity iPad available offers 64GB of storage space, but as users increasingly store more of their favourite media on the devices, the firm has identified the need for a higher capacity device.

An iPhone case with a built-in cup holder? The designers were looking for $25,000 to make it on the crowdsourcing site Indiegogo. One look at the contraption should have been enough to convince anyone that the thing was a joke, or a publicity stunt, but a number of mainstream press outlets (LA Times, UPI) and bloggers took the bait with little or no realization that that they might be on the wrong end of the hook. Today the Dutch marketing firm behind the effort acknowledged that it was 'a joke.'

Another report from Apple regarding Chinese labor practices surfaces. After conducting its 2011 audits to 339 sites, the company found that cases of underage labor had jumped from 6 to 74 in one year. It was concentrated in a single circuit board manufacturer, which Apple says was willfully conspiring with families to forge age-verification documents. According to a new report, Apple didn't find any cases of underage workers at its final assembly suppliers in 2012, but it plans to continue going deeper into the supply chain to ferret out violators. We are talking about Guangdong Real Faith Pingzhou Electronics Co., with which Apple has now terminated its relationship.

French tech blog NoWhereElse.fr claims to have pictures showing components for the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 6.
The blog says the photos come from a source connected to an Apple supplier and depict the loud speaker modules that will be used in the two new iPhones.
Believing that Apple will deviate from its usual release schedule,NoWhereElse.fr says there could be as many as three iPhones unveiled during 2013.
Apparently Apple is going to enter the ‘phablet’ market with a new iPhone model rumoured to be called either the iPhone Math or iPhone +. This sounds a bit ridiculous and not really in keeping with Apple at all, but then again, that’s what I said about the iPad mini…
Back to the leaked images, although fuzzy, they appear to show a similar module design to one ones used in the iPhone 5. Both appear to be smaller, with the iPhone 6 module the smallest. So could there be some super-thin iPhones on the way this autumn.

RIM reveals a bundle of huge media partners including 20th Century Fox, Disney, Paramount, National Geographic and Sony Music.
Following a string of setbacks, there's now just two more sleeps until RIM reveals its new BlackBerry 10 operating system.
Seemingly unable to wait another 48 hours, the Canadian OEM has released big news that BlackBerry World for BlackBerry 10 will come supercharged with music and video content via a number of major partnerships with studios and broadcasters.
This will bring the BlackBerry app store much closer to market leaders Google Play and Apple's App Store, which both offer a variety of movies and songs for rent and purchase. In fact, RIM is so confident, it claims the platform will offer 'one of the most robust music and video catalogues in mobile today'.
A number of payment options will be made available on the service, while films will be made available on the service on the same day they're released on DVD.
Frank Boulben, chief marketing officer at RIM, said: "Music and video content is an integral part of a rich mobile experience. People want easy and convenient access to their favourite music, movies and TV shows wherever they are.
"RIM is committed to working with content providers to bring the best, most up-to-date content to our customers with BlackBerry 10, and to make it easy for them to get what they want."
Initially, video downloads and rentals will be made available in the US, the UK, and Canada, while the music section will debut in 18 countries at launch. The announcement follows news that 15,000 BB10 apps were submitted by developers in less than two days.

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety has presented some disconcerting figures that show 69 per cent of licensed American drivers admitting to mobile phone use while behind the wheel within the past month. Despite that, 89 per cent of drivers believe those combining mobile use with driving pose a threat to the personal safety.
There's good reason to be fearful, as the mobile users admit to engaging in other reckless behaviours too, with 65 per cent speeding, 44 per cent driving while drowsy, 53 per cent sending a text or email, and 29 per cent neglecting a seatbelt.
Comparatively, drivers that hadn't used a mobile on the move in the past month are less likely to report maniacal motoring, with 31 per cent speeding, 14 per cent driving drowsy, three per cent sending a text or email and 16 per cent drove without a safety belt.
Peter Kissinger, president and CEO of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, said: "Ninety per cent of respondents believe that distracted driving is a somewhat or much bigger problem today than it was three years ago, yet they themselves continue to engage in the same activities.
"More work clearly is needed to educate motorists on the risks associated with using a cell phone while driving, especially given that most Americans believe this problem is becoming worse."
Although 95 per cent of respondents claim to disapprove of texting and emailing, 27 per cent admit to having done so in the past 30 days, spiking to 61 per cent for 16-24 year-olds.

Still waiting for a 128GB iPad? One could come sooner than you think. According to 9to5Mac, Cupertino is preparing to add a new SKU to its fourth-generation tablet line up, slotting next to the existing 16GB, 32GB and 64GB configurations as a premium model. A source at a well known US retailer shared the devices' SKU information with the outlet, marked up with internal Apple terminology that described both WiFi-only and cellular-capable slates in black and white facades. The devices' description column features a lone adjective, too: ultimate.
9to5Mac couldn't confirm that the description meant a 128GB model was inbound, but the assumption seems reasonable enough -- developers are finding references to 128GB iOS devices in iOS 6.1 beta code, and icons for the size were found in iTunes 11. Moreover, "good," "better" and "best" have all been used to describe different iPad configurations in the past -- ultimate seems like the next logical step. Strong evidence, to be sure, but we'll hedge our bets until we see something official. Read on to see the leaked SKU information for yourself.

That’s right folks, Samsung has added another smartphone to its Galaxy range.
The Korean firm is calling the Galaxy Express a ‘value-driven’ 4G LTE smartphone ‘designed for the young social explorer'.
Boasting faster multimedia streaming and downloads, super-fast internet browsing and unique device-to-device sharing capabilities, the Express looks pretty much like the Galaxy S3.
With its 4.5-inch display, the new smartphone fits neatly in between the Galaxy S3 Mini (4-inches) and the regular 4.8-inch Galaxy S3.
Running on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, the Express features a 5mp rear camera, a 1.3mp front camera, 8GB of user memory, 1GB RAM and a microSD slot offering up another 32GB of storage.
S Beam, Samsung Hub and Samsung AllShare Play all feature on the device, which will be available to purchase in the UK in the first half of 2013.

Turns out the rumours were true, Apple has officially announced that it will release a 128GB version of the fourth-gen iPad with Retina Display.
The new 128GB tablet will come in both WiFi and WiFi + Cellular versions, and will be available from February 5th from Apple’s stores and online, as well as Apple authorised resellers.
Earlier this week, PCR reported that a code in the latest iOS 6.1 beta 5 referenced compatibility with 128GB iOS devices.
“With more than 120 million iPads sold, it’s clear that customers around the world love their iPads, and everyday they are finding more great reasons to work, learn and play on their iPads rather than their old PCs,†said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing.
“With twice the storage capacity and an unparalleled selection of over 300,000 native iPad apps, enterprises, educators and artists have even more reasons to use iPad for all their business and personal needs.â€
Available in both Black and White, the new larger-capacity iPad will cost $799 for the WiFi version and $929 for the WiFi + Cellular model.

Analyst Context has revealed that RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook tablet has outsold Apple’s latest iPad model in the UK’s IT distribution channel.
More than 802,000 tablets were sold in November and December, with Apple accounting for just a quarter of the market.
"Sub-£300 devices accounted for 76 per cent of shipments," said Context mobile guru Salman Chaudhry. "A year ago it was 43 per cent. There has been a complete shift in the channel.
"It's a price-driven market, but never was before. The quality of many tablets is as good as the iPad but half the price, and they have a decent software ecosystem too. It's come a long way in a year."
Context’s report says that RIM shifted 160,000 PlayBook’s in the last two months of 2012, with Apple’s fourth-gen iPad selling 113,000 units.
The Nexus 7 was in third place, selling 105,000 and following that was Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 2 10.1-inch device, which shifted 85,000 units.

As usual, the bimonthly gap separating the release of Apple's latest devices has been filled with – that's right – leaked images of rumoured devices.
Let's get all of the buzzwords out of the way.
The latest images leaked to veteran Apple gossip site 9to5Macshowcase potential back plates for the heavily rumoured fifth-generation editions of both the iPad and iPad mini.
However, with most 'leaked' images, the legitimacy of the images is unclear. The only information known of the images is their origin from an accessory maker in China.

4GEE customers can get service set up in any EE store.
iPhone 5 customers on 4GEE tariffs can now receive visual voicemail on their devices, allowing them to see all voicemail messages at the same time.
EE launched the service yesterday (January 28th), which also allows iPhone 5 users to listen to voicemail messages in any order, as well as enabling them to use play and pause buttons to control playback.
Furthermore, the service allows users skim through and replay parts of their messages via the scrubber bar on their handset.
Current iPhone 5 customers with EE can receive the new service via text, while new iPhone 5 users on 4GEE contracts can get visual voicemail activated by visiting any EE store.

91.5 million mobile phones collecting dust all over the UK.
UK mobile phone users are currently sitting atop a proverbial goldmine, after a new report from mobile phone and tablet recycling price comparison site SellMyMobile.com revealed that there are 91.5 million unused phones lying around British homes, worth over £6.86 billion.
The study shows that the average UK mobile phone user has 2.06 phones at home, while 78 per cent have at least one unused device at home, and over a third (33.7 per cent) are holding on to three or more devices.
According to SellMyMobile.com, the average handset is now worth around £75 when recycled online. This means that British consumers are missing out on a potential £154.40 in old devices.
When asked why they have been unable to part with their old handsets, almost one in five (19.26 per cent) said that they are just ‘too lazy’, while 18.7 per cent said that they ‘don’t know what to do’ with them.
However, the report also shows that privacy plays a key role when it comes to deciding whether or not to part with an old phone. Figures show that 14.9 per cent will hold on to their device as they are ‘afraid that personal data will be jeopardised’ and 11.8 per cent aren’t sure how to wipe data before selling it on.
Colin White, managing director at SellMyMobile.com, commented: “In today’s tough economic climate, some extra cash can make all the difference. So it’s surprising that we are literally sitting on a potential goldmine stashed away in boxes at home. There are so many companies willing to pay good money for consumers looking to recycle their old phone, and they all offer tips and advice if you are unsure about how to send it off, or how to wipe old data from your phone.
“So if you’re looking to make some cash, either to help treat yourself to help beat the January blues, or pay off those dreaded Christmas credit card debts, make sure you search your old drawers to see how much you could have stashed at home. But once you’ve found your old phones, make sure you use a recycling service to get the best deal, as cash back can vary by an average of £59.58 between sites for the same phone.â€
According to the latest data from January trade-ins via SellMyMobile.com, Apple’s iPhone 4 16GB has been the most traded in handset in January 2013, fetching £139, followed by the BlackBerry Curve 8520 for £54.
The most valuable device to be traded online is currently the BlackBerry Porsche Design worth up to £547, followed by the Apple iPhone 5 64GB at £400.

Apple has been touting iOS 6 as 'the world's most advanced operating system,' and has now released the iOS 6.1 update, which may call for the firm to think up an even more ostentatious slogan for the software.
To date, Apple claims iOS users have uploaded over nine billion photos to Photo Stream, sent over 450 billion iMessages and received over four trillion notifications, while almost 300m iOS devices are running on iOS 6.
6.1 will expand LTE support to 36 and 23 new iPhone and iPad carriers, respectively, enabling 4G to iPhone 5, iPad Mini and Retina Display iPad users. This comes after Apple's LTE-enabled iPad 3 was hit with false advertising complaints in a number of countries, overlooking the fact that not all regions had 4G at the time of release.
A partnership with Fandango will allow US-based iOS 6.1 users to book cinema tickets through Siri, while iTunes Match subscribers able to download individual songs to their iOS devices from iCloud.
Philip Schiller, SVP of worldwide marketing, Apple, said: "With nearly 300 million iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices on iOS 6 in just five months, it may be the most popular new version of an OS in history.
"iOS 6.1 brings LTE support to more markets around the world, so even more users can enjoy ultrafast Safari browsing, FaceTime video calls, iCloud services, and iTunes and App Store downloads."
The 6.1 update is available for iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad (third and fourth generation), iPad mini, iPad 2 and iPod touch (fourth and fifth generation).

With the BlackBerry 10 launch just around the corner, there is a lot of pressure on RIM's CEO to provide a 'Steve Jobs Moment.' However, given BlackBerry's 1.1% percent market share compared to the combined 92% share between rivals Android and iOS, it's a long road back. To add to the struggle, no other first-generation smartphone leader has been able to pull off this kind of rebirth. Palm and Symbian are dead and Microsoft is struggling. But, as one mobile analyst explains, RIM has a chance to carve out its own market with tomorrow's launch of BlackBerry 10 given that they get a few things right. They need to heavily promote their devices to CEOs, heavily promote the top apps to users, and most of all, they need to be able to explain why people should give it a look.

PlayJam has unveiled a new pad design and docking station for its forthcoming portable Android console, GameStick. At the time of writing, GameStick has raised $517,199, having originally sought $100,000 worth of backing. XBMC 12 Frodo has spent enough time in beta that you'd think it was walking to Mordor. Whatever prompted the long trek, it's at last over: the finished version of XBMC 12 is hitting the servers. As promised, the completed edition significantly expands the media center app's universe to include initial support for Android and Raspberry Pi, as well as live TV and DVR functionality. Sticklers for quality may like the upgrade as well, as there's new support for Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio processing on top of 10-bit H.264 video decoding. There's considerably more on tap with the completed Frodo build than what we can list here, so hit the download link if you want to see what two months of testing delivers.

Along with its new OS and the Z10 smartphone, BlackBerry also announced its first BB10 smartphone with a physical keyboard at its launch event today.
Designed to provide what CEO Thorsten Heins called ‘the best typing experience in the industry’, the Q10 has a touchscreen AND that infamous BlackBerry physical keyboard.
So whether you’ve got fat thumb issues or hate the feel of a real keyboard, every BB fan should be satisfied with typing on the Q10.
On the inside, the Q10 features BB10, obviously, and you can check out all the juicy OS features here. On the outside, the smartphone is encased in a material that has been specially designed for BlackBerry and is apparently thinner, lighter and stronger than plastic.
Whilst the BlackBerry Z10 will be available in the UK from tomorrow (Jan 31st), BlackBerry provided few details about the release of the Q10.

The new highly anticipated operating system from BlackBerry has finally arrived, and it heavily focuses on making you as lazy as possible.
BlackBerry 10 is hell bent on making moving between apps, programs and files as quick and simple as possible, all by using BlackBerry Flow.
BB Flow enables users to swipe between apps, that are all running in real time on a device. For instance, if you’re watching a video on YouTube and you receive an email, you don’t have to exit the video and open up your email application to view your new message, you can simply swipe the screen across and have a peek at BlackBerry Hub – the place on your new phone that collects all the real-time data that’s currently coming in, including emails, tweets, Facebook interactions and so on.
The Hub not only collates all the usual information coming in, it also allows you to email and tweet straight from it, meaning you don’t have to enter yet another app. You can look at a friend's profile from the Hub too, which pulls in info from said friend's social network profiles and linkedIn account.
‘Don’t search anymore, the device adapts to you,’ commented BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins as the launch event as attendees wooed over this feature.
As well as reducing your need to Google your acquaintances, the new BB keyboard is designed let you become a lot less trigger happy with the space bar.

Can’tbebotheredtoputspacesinbetweenwords? It doesn’t matter, just give the space bar a tap at the end of a sentence and BB10 will fill them in for you. Also, you no longer need to actually type most of the words ever again, as important and frequent words appear above certain letters on the QWERTY keyboard, so you can just flick them into a text message.
Multilingual users will be happy to hear that you can now type in a number of different languages and the keyboard will recognise this and change the automatic words to coincide with the language.
BBM has been given a nice update as well, you can now move back and forth from messaging and video calling, all within the same app. The addition of BBM ScreenShare means you can send your screen to another users and show them pics, books, documents and more. Your whole screen and movements will appear on their device.
A few other interesting features include BB Remember – an app to create folders for shopping lists, vacations, and anything else you can possibly think of. You can add reminders and voice notes as well, AND it is all integrated with Outlook notes and tasks as well as Evernote notebook. There’s also a built-in photo editor featuring effects, styles and enhancements, and the Story Maker app brings all your media together and automatically makes videos out of it.
As well as the operating system, BlackBerry also unveiled two new devices - the BlackBerry Z10 and the BlackBerry Q10.

BlackBerry, formerly known as Research in Motion, has officially announced its BlackBerry Z10 smartphone.
The Z10 will be the first device to run the firm's latest operating system, BlackBerry 10.
BlackBerry unveiled the Z10, along with the new operating system at today's BlackBerry experience event, which was streamed live around the world.
UK users will be able to get their hands on the device from Thursday 31st January from a number of carriers, including EE, O2 and Vodafone.
The Z10 is pegged as BlackBerry's new class of products, which have been produced to go head-to-head with the likes of Apple's iPhone and Samsung's Galaxy devices.
BlackBerry's bullish approach was apparent as CEO Thorstein Heins revealed the device and highlighted its rightful place amongst its rival firms' flagship devices.
A key feature of the device highlighted by the CEO was the device's trademark BlackBerry keyboard, which boasts a range of features, such as the ability to recognise finger swipes whilst in sleep mode.
"BlackBerry 10 devices are absolutely the best typing experience in the industry. Period," said Heins.
The Z10 packs a 4.2-inch screen, offering up a resolution of up to 1,280 x 768 and 356 pixels per inch – which, in terms of ppi actually provides a sharper picture than the iPhone 5 and its 326 ppi display.
Additional specs include a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 2GB RAM, 4G LTE connectivity, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and built-in storage of 16GB, which is expandable to 64GB via microSD card.
Completing the device is an eight-megapixel rear camera and two-megapixel front-facing camera, which are equipped with a new feature known as Time Shift, allowing users to "go back in time" and decide on the optimal image, say, if a friend blinks or moves.
All of this is packed into a 0.35-inch thin frame that weighs 4.78 ounces, and offers strong a resemblance to Apple's iPhone 5.
Battery life is said to offer ten hours of talk time, video playback of up to 11 hours and standby time of 305 hours.

Surprise, surprise. A new report has revealed that iPhone users are responsible for the highest phone bills, beating users of rival smartphones by a large margin.
The report compiled by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners found that 60 per cent of iPhone users polled spent over $100 per month on their mobile plans, whilst ten per cent admitted to running up bills over $200.
Just six per cent of iPhone users spent under $50 on their services. In comparison, twelve per cent of Android users queried spent below the $50 mark.
The findings of the report will be unsurprising to most, iPhone owners especially.
Whilst the report failed to mention what caused the increased costs for iPhone users, the devices are typically sold on higher priced cellular plans to begin with, without factoring in subsided costs of the handset itself per month.
So, are Android users more mindful of their data plans than their iPhone using neighbours, or is it safe to
Whether its the notion that Android are more mindful of their data plans than their iPhone using neighbours, or the idea that Android is simply viewed as the cheaper brand, it would seem that prospective smartphone buyers on a budget should stick with Android.

A US court judge has handed down a number of post-trial rulings from last year's Apple vs Samsung patent case.
Within a 32 page order, district court judge Lucy Koh said she agreed with the jury's final decision, which ruled that Samsung did ultimately infringe on a number of Apple's patents.
However, Koh made it clear within the report that she disagreed with the jury's decision to find that Samsung "wilfully" infringed Apple's patents.
Within the ruling, the judge stated that in order for Samsung to have wllfully infringed on Apple's patents, Apple would need to prove "by clear and convincing evidence that the infringer acted despite an objectively high likelihood that its actions constituted infringement of a valid patent."
Apple will no doubt be reeling from the decision, given that if the decision had rules in the company's favour, it would have been able to collect triple the amount of damages it is set to receive from Samsung.
The length trial between the two giants was well publicised, ending in August last year as a jury ruled in favour of Apple, subsequently awarding them $1.05 million in damages.
While the trial ended last year, the firms have continued to take shots at each other as Apple tried to add on an additional $500 million, whilst Samsung battled to reduce the damages by $600 million.

This pass through audio modulator lets you playback stereo audio on two Tesla coils. But don’t fret, you can just use mono files if you only have one coil on hand. On one side there are inputs that connect to the audio source. The other side drives the Tesla coil, switching it on and off based on the relationship between a reference voltage and the audio signal. As you can hear in the video after the break this sounds great as long as you have the right kind of source audio.
The song played in that clip is the Duke Nukem 3D theme. [Daniel] started with a MIDI file and removed the chimes and drums to make the playback a little cleaner. The demo uses just one coil because the other was destroyed during testing when feedback between the two became a problem.
For some reason this reminds us of that singing Tesla coil hat. If you’re already on ourmailing list (sign up in the sidebar) you know we’re getting pretty close to unveiling our own awesome Tesla coil project. It doesn’t sing… yet.

Talk of Microsoft finally deploying Windows Phone 7.8 has been building to a crescendo -- and we're glad to confirm it's more than just noise. The more customizable home and lock screens, Marketplace improvements and numerous under-the-hood upgrades are rolling out to all of Nokia's Windows Phone 7.5 devices, starting today and continuing through February. The company hasn't confirmed who goes first, althoughAT&T's Lumia 900 is believed to be part of the earliest wave. Other upgrades will depend on carrier timing, if you're using a locked phone, but the plan to push 7.8 is still good news for those who've wanted to keep their early Lumias as current as possible.

As BlackBerry launched its newest operating system, the firm claimed it would feature over 70,000 bespoke apps. Turns out, they may have told a little porkie.
Following the event, a number of Android's own employees spoke of the frantic process behind producing the apps, many of which have been revealed to be rushed ports of Android applications.
BlackBerry's vice president of global alliances and business development, Martyn Mallick, confessed to reporters following the event that "40 per cent of BB10 apps are wrapped Android applications".
Mallick also revealed that the firm's recent Port-a-thin initiative played a big role in the app creation process, with individuals with any functional app being able to sell it to the firm by producing a version compatible with BB10 using the firm's own porting tools.
Outside of these rehashed applications, a number of 'apps' available on the OS are simply portals to mobile versions of web sites.
Obviously, given that BB10 only launched last night, it's only natural for there to be a number of hastily converted and sparsely featured apps.
But still, BlackBerry's claim of 70,000 'bespoke apps' is a very tall one indeed.

The company formerly known as Research In Motion—which decided to cut right to the proverbial chase and rename itself 'BlackBerry'—launched its much-anticipated BlackBerry 10 operating system at a high-profile event in New York City Jan. 30. Meanwhile, Microsoft is still dumping tons of money and effort into Windows Phone. But can either smartphone OS — or another player, for that matter — successfully challenge Apple iOS and Google Android, which one research firm estimated as running on 92 percent of smartphonesshipped in the fourth quarter of 2012? What would it take for any company to launch that sort of successful effort?

A new discovered malware is potentially one of the most costly viruses yet discovered. Uncovered by NQ Mobile, the 'Bill Shocker' (a.expense.Extension.a) virus has already impacted 620,000 users in China and poses a threat to unprotected Android devices worldwide. Bill Shocker downloads in the background, without arousing the mobile device owner's suspicion. The infection can then take remote control of the device, including the contact list, Internet connections and dialing and texting functions. Once the malware has turned the phone into a "zombie," the infection uses the device to send text message to the profit of advertisers. In many cases, the threat will overrun the user's bundling quota, which subjects the user to additional charges.

EA has reported a decline in revenues for FY13 Q3 with a surge in digital sales unable to offset a decline in physical games sales.
Digital net revenue for the quarter ending December 31stclimbed from $274m last year to $321m, but revenue from packaged goods fell from $738m to $568m.
GAAP net loss was reduced from $205m to $45m.

COO Peter Moore added: "EA had six of the top twenty titles in Western markets in 2012, compared to four in 2011. EA was also the No.1 publisher on iOS worldwide for the year."
FIFA 13 was one of the star performers, shifting 12m units up to and including the period – a 23 per cent increase over FIFA 12. FIFA 13’s digital revenues climbed an incredible 98 per cent, passing $100m. Total FIFA series digital revenue stands at over $230m year-to-date

Imangi Studios' Temple Run 2 reached 50 million downloads in its first two weeks, setting a new record for a mobile game.
Angry Birds Space was the previous fastest game to hit 50 million downloads across all platforms, but it took 35 days to reach that target. Temple Run 2 managed it in just 13 days.
"Temple Run has evolved into something so much bigger than us," said Imangi co-founder Keith Shepherd. "The game has performed beyond our wildest dreams, and we are thrilled that gamers and fans have embraced Temple Run 2 in such a short period of time."
Temple Run 2 is free-to-play, and was downloaded more than 6 million times within 24 hours of being launched on the iOS App Store. However, subsequent releases on Google Play and the Amazon Marketplace pushed the game to new heights of popularity, though it is still some way short of Temple Run's 170 million downloads.

British Windows Phone owners won't have to let their TV viewing habits slip while they're on the move. TVCatchup has just posted the promised Windows Phone 8 version of its streaming app, giving locals access to live programming from the BBC, ITV and others. OS-specific optimizations aren't extensive, but they exist -- it's possible to pin a favorite network to the Start screen, and to use voice commands to jump directly to a channel or guide. Viewers just need to hit the Windows Phone Store to stay on top of the latest shows with their Lumias.

Brits who ground their fingers to stumps hammering their Lumia's update button will finally be able to rest, as Nokia UK has confirmed that Windows 7.8 is rolling out today. The company has also revealed O2's pricing for the Lumia 620, the handset that'll bring Windows Phone 8 to the cash-strapped masses. It's available from today on the oxygen-themed network, setting you back £149.99 or free on contracts priced over £18.50. Normally, the interchangeable back plates would cost around £20, but O2 is offering buyers a choice of a yellow, orange, green, white or cyan model for free.
You'll also be able to pick up the quirky handset from ThreeUKand Virgin Media today, although neither has opened up about pricing just yet. Vodafone has announced that it'll launch the phone on February 6th with a choice of white or black covers, while EE has yet to commit to carrying the handset. If you saw removable covers and hoped that the 620 would benefit from the same wireless charging plates we saw in the 820, we've got some bad news -- Nokia has said it's not likely to happen.
