Rudy Giuliani had John Gotti to worry about; Mike Bloomberg has Steve Jobs. Despite all-time lows for the city in homicides and shootings, NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg said overall crime in New York City was up 3.3% in 2012 due to iPhone, iPad and other Apple device thefts, which have increased by 3,890 this year. 'If you just took away the jump in Apple, we'd be down for the year,' explained Marc La Vorgna, the mayor's press secretary. 'The proliferation of people carrying expensive devices around is so great,' La Vorgna added. 'It's something that's never had to be dealt with before.' Bloomberg also took to the radio, urging New Yorkers who didn't want to become a crime statistic to keep their iDevices in an interior, hard-to-reach pocket: 'Put it in a pocket in sort of a more body-fitting, tighter clothes, that you can feel if it was — if somebody put their hand in your pocket, not just an outside coat pocket.' But it seems the best way to fight the iCrime Wave might be to slash the $699 price of an iPhone(unactivated), which costs an estimated $207 to make. The U.S. phone subsidy model reportedly adds $400+ to the price of an iPhone. So, is offering unlocked alternatives at much more reasonable prices than an iPhone — like the $299 Nexus 4, for starters — the real key to taking a bite out of cellphone crime? After all, didn't dramatic price cuts pretty much kill car stereo theft?

Today Nokia announced an agreement with Research In Motion to resolve all patent legislation between the two. The companies have been fighting over patents for almost a decade, most recently over devices with wireless LAN capabilities. The terms of today's agreement were not disclosed but it involved a one-time payment from RIM as well as ongoing payments. This agreement comes shortly after RIM's announcement that it pulled in $9 million in profit last quarter, down 97% from the $265 million they earned in the same quarter the year before. The company has pinned its hopes on BlackBerry 10, scheduled to launch next month: "So this is RIM at the end of 2012: losing subscribers and revenue, facing significant opponents, but with more cash on hand and at least one long-running lawsuit settled. If nothing else, it means the way is clear for RIM to launch its Hail Mary pass: BlackBerry 10.

The appearance of new Nokia firmware on NaviFirm is already enough to pique the interest of owners jonesing for an update, and this time there's especially strong reasons to get fired up: Windows Phone 7.8 upgrades for both the Lumia 510and 800 have appeared on the servers. While their presence doesn't represent an official rollout, it supports notions that Nokia is edging closer to a deployment and gives those who live dangerously a chance to try 7.8 for themselves. We can't guarantee that phones will survive any unofficial transplants, but we'd love to hear from risk-takers who find something truly new in Microsoft's not-quite-8 release.

Early beta version of development platform available to Marmalade Professional and Plus license holders
The beta version of the SDK for cross-platform tool Marmalade offering support for Windows Phone 8 will be released tomorrow.
The dev platform is designed to help enable fast deployment of games and apps to the OS, and will be available to Marmalade Professional and Plus license holders to allow users to begin creating content for Windows mobile devices.
Marmalade will also allow developers to port OpenGL ES 2.0 applications on Windows Phone 8.
Support for Windows RT is set to follow in early 2013.
“The arrival of Windows Phone 8 has the potential to disrupt the industry landscape, and there are huge opportunities for developers who take early advantage of this new platform,” said Marmalade MD Harvey Elliott.

Know what's better than the gossamer promise of an early 2013 release date for Windows Phone 7.8? Any and all little tidbits that elucidate just what it could herald for legions ofbruised Mango users. According to an alleged Nokia customer feedback survey obtained by WMPoweruser, that OS upgrade may bring with it a few additional, albeit minor enhancements outside of the (already confirmed) expanded start screen, like options for enhanced lock screen security, a Bing image of the day wallpaper, plus 20 new color themes. On the Nokia side of things, it appears Lumia owners will get to enjoy a few software perks as well -- namely, that of the gif-making Cinemagraph app and an expanded set of camera lenses. In all, this rumored feature set isn't exactly the most robust, but it'ssomething. We've reached out to Nokia for comment, but so far the company hasn't returned our request. In the meantime, consider this slice of news as solid as WP 7.8's release date.

I have fixed the games I submitted to the BlackBerry Game-Port-A-Thon. I had many bugs reported by the AppWorld team that occurred only on the BlackBerry DevAlpha device, but not on the simulator. It seems that the DevAlpha is very important tool, if you want to develop for the upcoming BB10 phones.
[h=4]FreeJeweled[/h]This one was the trickiest. I don’t own a DevAlpha, and yet I developed for it. The game seemed to work really well on the simulator, but it didn’t work as well on the real device. Luckily I got some images from the BlackBerry AppWorld testing team to help me with my development.
FreeJeweled running on DevAlpha device. ScreenShot provided by BlackBerry AppWorld team
FreeJeweled running on simulator. In here the menu bar is perfect
[h=4][/h]As you can see the game worked really well on the simulator, and badly on the real device. At first I thought that my problem was that the size of the menu bar buttons is based on the jewel size from the game, and those values came from c++ engine. I thought that maybe there’s some very strange timing issues or something… and that’s causing the qml side ending up with some strange default values. My first attempt was hardcoding the button sizes, but I still got rejected from AppWorld, and they told me that it still looks just as bad.
The FreeJeweled is using custom fonts which are packaged into the application itself. My second guess was that the fonts are not working in the same way on the real device as they are on the simulator. This time I had help from a friend with BlackBerry DevAlpha to run some tests for me, and it turns out that the problem was with the font behavior. I blindly changed font sizes on my code, and sent a package for him to test, and after couple of packages we finally got it right.
Below you can see the working version of the game running on the DevAlpha, and running on Simulator.
Working version of FreeJeweled running on DevAlpha
Working version of FreeJeweled running on simulator
It seems that I really need the DevAlpha device if I want to do quality ports, since things like this tend to happen sometimes.
[h=4]Blubbles[/h]Blubbles was running really smoothly on my simulator, but it didn’t work on the DevAlpha. I used Qt’s setGeometry function to set the QWidget into the right place on the screen. It worked really well on the simulator, and it left only small black borders on both sides of the application, but it didn’t work at all on the real device. I strongly recommend not to use the setGeometry function in your apps (if you don’t have DevAlpha), since it is working differently on the device, and the on simulator.

//This didn't work out at all

My solution was to run the App in full screen with:
1
2 |
MainWindow *mw = new MainWindow;
mw->showFullScreen();
|
I also commented out the set Geometry function since it didn’t work. After that I also decided to run the game in portrait mode instead of landscape, and I also modifies the code a bit, so I could get the screen full of bubbles. Now it’s running really well on the simulator, and on the real device too. See the image
Fixed version of Blubbles, screen full of bubbles
After this I got one more rejection from the AppWorld. It turns out that I left a link to the original Blubbles project at source forge, and I had to remove it, since it was against the BlackBerry AppWorld policies. They categorised the sourceforge as “Another app store”, and told me to remove the link. It’s really not an issue for me, since they still agreed that I could keep the link to my github page where I host the source code. I’m fine with the “github only” policy, since the source code is still easy to find for anyone who’s interested about it.
[h=4]qmlSokoban[/h]For this game I got a very valid point from the AppWorld testes that the man is impossible the move. Actually it was possible to move the man, but you just had to click the next block of the screen where the man is. Dragging event’s with a finger moved only the world around the man(not the man itself). I guess that this happens all the time with the real device and touchscreen. The controls are easy only with the mouse, but they don’t work that well with the touchscreen.
I decided to add a DPAD to control the man. I still wanted to keep the sokoban controls “clean” in the way that no one will mess up their game by an accidental move. Therefore I configured the buttons to only control the character from “mouseClick’s”, and not from drag events. The character moves now only with one “tap” to the DPAD. The character will not move two screens even if you keep the finger pressed to the button(this to prevent accidental moves). The AppWorld testers also agreed that this was a good fix, and I got the game passed to the store.
Here’s a snippet how to create “tapping” DPAD buttons for your game. You only need one image component, with proper anchors.

I started my wp8 development by playing around with Cocos2d-x port for wp8. I also used this start by participating to the forum.nokia wiki-competition with my article about Porting Cocos2d-x Games for Windows Phone 8. You can see the port running on the video below. I had really good time with cocos2-x, and I think that I might even make my own game based on this framework. It’s really easy to use, and you can port the games created with it so easily to iOS, and for Android as well.

Rogers is currently in a full-court press to get us using Microsoft-branded devices, and it just made that clear through steep, across-the-board sales on everything Windows Phone 8. Nokia's Lumia 920 has dropped from $100 to $50; the yet-to-ship Samsung ATIV S has already dropped from $150 to a more tempting $80 for early adopters. The sweetest of deals may be for the HTC Windows Phone 8X, which has dipped to $30 for a 16GB model and a solitary penny for the 8GB version. For all the cuts, Rogers is careful to warn that they're part of a "limited time offer" and might not last beyond the weekend. We're delving deeper for an official statement on the drops, although the ATIV S cut may be to counter a leaked (and as yet unconfirmed) Bell deal at the same price. Whatever the cause, we'll gladly take steep discounts on cutting-edge hardware.

The Canadian smartphone maker is on the verge of releasing its latest Blackberry 10 operating system, and is hoping to entice users to make the switch,
RIM has somewhat fallen behind its competitors. Both Apple and Samsung have recently released new additions to their smartphone ranges, whilst RIM hasn't offered a new device in close to 18 months.
However, in order to aid its new operating system, the firm has launched an incentive program designed to influence business customers to upgrade to the new OS.
Blackberry 10 Ready Program offers RIM's larger business customers perks such as online training and webcasts, along with free upgrades of licences to the new BB10 OS.
"Starting in January 2013 through to December 31, 2013, Research In Motion (RIM) will be offering customers who purchase new BlackBerry 10 smartphones, the ability to trade up their existing BlackBerry Enterprise Server licenses on a one for one basis for free," reads the press release sent out by the firm.
"The new license trade up will allow customers to secure and manage their BlackBerry 10 smartphones."
RIM has been relatively quite for a while now, but things are expected to heat up in the New Year, starting with the roll out of BB10 on January 30th.

Apple has had to take security more seriously when a larger user base and the cloud have opened up greater risks. Thanks to a just-discovered hire, we now know 1 Infinite Loop isn't messing around. While many of us were fixated on new iPhones in September, the company was quietly recruiting Kristin Paget as a Core OS Security Researcher. She's had stints at eBay and Google, but she's best-known for helping Microsoft while she was a security researcher at IOActive: not only did her team burst the bubble of Windows Vista engineers who thought their code was airtight, the group ultimately delayed the entire OS release to get security up to snuff. Given that Vista avoided most of the malware chaos that affected Windows XP even after Service Pack 2, Paget bodes well for the future protection of Apple's platforms. Just don't expect her to talk shop when she's a security expert at a firm that tends toreally, really value its secrecy.

Windows Phone 8 is a roaring success! That is if you ask the platform's Senior Director, Todd Brix, who tweeted today that developer revenues and downloads have doubled since its launch in November. While this sounds all good, what does it really mean? Back in June, the former Windows Phone Marketplace surpassed 100,000 published apps. To further gauge the platform's progress, Nokia recently announced that the Windows Phone Store now has over 120,000 apps, with 46 of the top 50 iOS and Android applications being available for WP8.
While today's vague declaration of success didn't reveal any specific numbers, a 20 percent software increase in under six months is definitely something to smile about. As much as we'd like to slap Microsoft a high-five, we'll have to save our jubilation until we get a little something more concrete -- hopefully a set of official statistics will Surface sooner than later.

It's not exactly often that our neighbors down south get any handset exclusives to call their own, but according to Guerrero Móvil's Facebook page, there's a Mexico-only Lumia 505 well on its way to Telcel's mobile lineup. Aside from touting an 8-megapixel camera, though, the regional carrier doesn't really reveal any other details -- however, rumor has it this Nokia handset will be running Redmond's en-route Widows Phone 7.8 and come sporting a 3.5 or 4-inch WVGA display with an 800MHz, single-core processor, 256MB RAM and 4GB of built-in storage. Of course, it's still a tad bit early to say these specs are set in stone, but the social network post does note that the WP slab will soon be official, and thus it's only a matter of time before we find out what the Lumia 505 really has to offer.

Nokia has today introduced the Lumia 620, its most affordable Windows Phone 8 smartphone to date.
The tech giant says this new phone ‘offers a more fun, youthful appeal, and compact design’. Nokia is attempting to inject a bit of fun into its new device by offering up seven different exchangeable shells.
"We continue to execute on our strategy to reach new audiences and new markets," said Jo Harlow, executive vice president, Nokia Smart Devices. "With its innovative design, the latest Windows Phone 8 software and signature experiences from Nokia, like Nokia lenses, Nokia Maps and Nokia Music, the Nokia Lumia 620 is a highly competitive smartphone at this price point."
In terms of specs, this Windows Phone 8 smartphone features a 3.8-inch 800x480 display, 5MP autofocus main camera, 512MB RAM, and a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor with 1Ghz dual-core CPU.
"People can do more of the things they love when they choose a mobile device that has a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor," said Enrico Salvatori, senior vice president and president of Qualcomm Europe. "The Snapdragon S4 Plus processor is the heart of the Nokia Lumia 620, making it possible to multi-task, stream in HD and share content at super-fast speeds."
Estimated at $249, the Lumia 620 will begin selling in January 2013 in Asia, followed closely by Europe and the Middle East.

With the launch of BlackBerry 10 edging ever closer, the company has rebranded its BlackBerry App World to, simply, BlackBerry World.
The BlackBerry App World web store will become the BlackBerry World web store prior to the BB10 launch event on January 30, 2013, while the BlackBerry World name change will be rolled out to all storefronts as of mid-January 2013.
BlackBerry PlayBook tablet customers will see the updated store name in a future build, while video and music content will still be only available via the separate Music Store and Video Store applications on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet.
Customers on BlackBerry OS smartphones (OS 5, 6, 7 and 7.1) will also see the updated name and continue to benefit from new titles as they are developed for the BlackBerry OS platform. However the video and music content will not be available.
Developers from across the globe have been creating new apps and games for BlackBerry 10, while other teams at RIM have been meeting with content partners, music labels, networks, and studios to provide a comprehensive catalogue of music and video in one storefront with one login on the user’s BlackBerry 10 smartphone.
This is not the first rebranding story to make the headlines this year. In August it was revealed that Microsoft was in the process of rebranding the Windows Phone Marketplace, while Android Market was rebranded as Google Play in March.

The HTC Windows Phone 8S was announced as a lower-end alternative to its bigger brother, the flagship Windows Phone 8X, but the company has remained relatively quiet about it since. While we're still awaiting official details on pricing and availability across the globe, HTC has filled us in on one crucial nugget of information: it won't be coming to the United States. While we've been suspicious that this might be the case, we had been holding out hope that it might have at least some amount of reach in the US market. Essentially, HTC is focusing all of its stateside efforts on the 8X, its signature device. With that said, we'll still likely see the 8S show up as an unlocked and unsubsidized smartphone on various etailers, so Windows Phone enthusiasts with a penchant for bright colors will want to keep their eyes peeled. Now that we know more about the markets that won't be graced by the presence of the 8S, all we need now is a confirmation on when we can expect it elsewhere. Stay tuned past the break for HTC's official statement.

A warning for brands not to miss their target audience by pushing to iOS.
Orange has released the Orange Exposure 2012/2013 study, which analyses mobile trends adopted by teens aged 11-18 in the UK, France and Spain. The respondents consider mobiles their primary device screen, with 83 per cent and 95 per cent of those in the UK and Spain owning a smartphone.
Reasons for favouring mobile included:
* 92 per cent of Brits say it's a "way to always have a media device at hand"
* 55 per cent of Brits say it's "mine and no one else’s" so “I can access what I want, when I want."
However, the report makes a key note for advertisers not to miss out on the opportunities presented by BlackBerry, even though 56 per cent of adult users want an iPhone 5. It shows that BB penetration among UK and Spain teens is two and three times higher than other mobile device, while iPhone's is low because of the high price tags.
Meanwhile, one in two Spanish respondents owns an Android device, with 38 per cent of Brits also owning one – a 14 per cent year-on-year increase.
Social media is also a big player with youngsters as Brit kids admitting to spending an average of ten hours a week using networks, while three-quarters of teens across the UK, France and Spain discussing watch they're watching on TV view social networks accessed from their mobile.
The figure supports the ever-growing trend of second-screen use, and PacketVideo's prediction that tablets will replace TV remotes in the future.
Stephanie Hospital, exec VP of Orange Digital Audience and Advertising Division, said: "The question that every advertiser and brand should be asking themselves is 'am I on top of this new consumer usage and am I using mobile marketing to its full potential?'
"The research lays bare the significant opportunities for advertisers to monetise and engage with their audience in a responsible manner – with teenagers so firmly adopting the mobile as their key device; and adults using multiple screens interchangeably as second nature - advertisers must sit up and harness its potential."

With all the hubbub surrounding Windows Phone 8, it's easy to forget that Microsoft has another new OS in the pipeline: a refresh known as Windows Phone 7.8. One group hasn't forgotten about the update, however, and that's all the current users of Windows Phone 7.5. Now, Microsoft is issuing a reminder that, yes, the update really is coming -- just not this year. The folks in Redmond assert that they're currently working with hardware manufacturers and carriers to deploy Windows Phone 7.8 to "as many devices as possible" in early 2013. So, it seems that Christmas will come a bit later for owners of older hardware, but at least Microsoft has a New Year's resolution worth sticking to.

The ITworld article reads: 'Nokia has asked a California court to enforce an arbitration award that wouldprevent Research In Motion from selling products with wireless LAN capabilities until the companies can agree on patent royalty rates. Nokia and RIM both declined to comment on Nokia's request, a copy of which was obtained by IDG News Service, but such a filing is typically made after two parties settle a dispute through arbitration but one party does not follow through on the agreement.'"Also from the article: "The patents in question are U.S. patents 5,479,476, which covers user-adjustable modes for phones; 5,845,219, which covers call alert during silent mode; 6,049,796, which covers real-time search on a personal digital assistant; 6,055,439, which covers a cellphone user interface; 6,253,075, which covers call rejection; and 6,427,078, which covers a small, handheld workstation.
